In short
Two segments on The Hauraki Big Show: (1) whether women’s haircuts trigger bigger emotional reactions than men’s, framed around cost, expectations, and “over-the-top” salon experiences; (2) advice email about a promotion dilemma (“more pay equals more problems”) and whether to stay comfortable or step up.
Guests/hosts
Jace, Mike, and Keezy (also called Pugs). They discuss their own households and careers as radio presenters.
Key claims
Women’s haircuts are pricier (hundreds of dollars) and more of an investment, so disappointment leads to tears/tantrums. Promotions can shift you away from what you enjoy into managing others.
Notable examples
Jace’s daughters and wife Kesey’s frequent, low-maintenance-but-stressful haircut routine; Anonymous’s promotion email; Keezy’s career references (Talkback, Dog Squad, Brokenwood Mysteries).

0:07Keyzie:Please know more there on the Radio Hauraki Big Show this Monday afternoon. The time is exactly 19 minutes to six o 'clock in New Zealand, losing their first wicket in the seventh over. New Zealand 25 for one. Bit of a slow start, fellas. Now, I just wanted to broach a topic with you, fellas, and I don't like to generalise. and, you know, I want you to pull me up if you feel like I'm being inappropriate.
0:34Mike Minogue:Can I just pull you up straight away and say you do like generalising? It's like one of your favourite things to do. What do you mean, man? Especially off air.
0:40Keyzie:It's just I was curious to know whether this happens in your households as well. Okay. And it's to do with women having haircuts. Okay, see, this already sounds sexist.
0:55Mike Minogue:Well, I mean, just be wary.
0:58Keyzie:I'll tread very, very carefully. But, God, they're so over the top and get in the most hell of a mood, don't they?
1:07Mike Minogue:Jase. What? Just right out the gate. Jase, I hear what you're saying. Really? I'm just trying to meet them halfway. I don't know. I don't know.
1:16Keyzie:I mean, I've got four girls, as you know. Well, you own them. I beg your pardon? You can't say that, Jase. You've got four girls and my wife. Right. Obviously. and I am sick and tired of the amount of tears, the amount of tantrums that have gone on in my life because I've had some crazy, wacky hairdo that never came off when they went to the hairdresser.
1:40Jason Hoyte:Is that sort of saying that you feel like their tears are not valid or their emotional response is not welcome in your house?
1:48Keyzie:It's pathetic. Because that's a little...
1:49Mike Minogue:That's what it is. It's pathetic. So what you're saying, Jason, whenever you're...
1:53Keyzie:I don't want to be too harsh here. but I reckon there's been more tears in my household over haircuts
2:00Mike Minogue:than anything else in my life. So as you say, you've got four daughters and your wife and women don't tend to get haircuts as often as men do. I go and get my hair cut once a month. Mogi gets his done every two weeks.
2:13Keyzie:Every two weeks, which is ironic because he's got a hair hat.
2:15Mike Minogue:A hair hat, which is weird, exactly. I think it's to make himself feel like he's got hair.
2:21Keyzie:Well, you see, even that I feel like is massively over the top with you two. and I know that you like to faff around with your hair too, Pugs, and you've always got some crazy do going on or whatever.
2:33Jason Hoyte:I do it so you comment on how fluffy it is when we come into the show.
2:36Keyzie:But, you know, I get a haircut once every two months. We can tell. And I do it myself. You know what I mean?
2:42Mike Minogue:Yeah, but what I was getting at there is that once a year, say, your wife might go get a haircut, right?
2:48Keyzie:Well, no, it's every sort of six to eight weeks. Oh, really? Yes, totally.
2:53Mike Minogue:Wow, okay, so she's running sort of six haircuts a year. And you know my wife, Kesey.
2:57Keyzie:Very well, very well, very well. Is very low maintenance. Yes. You know, she's not a big make-up person. She's not into all that sort of stuff. She doesn't do manicures and pedicures. She's been pretty doled up whenever I've run into it. Actually, she probably needs a pedicure. Right. You know what I mean? So she doesn't sort of worry about that sort of stuff. But when it comes to haircut, she gets all flustered. She's like, what should I run with? And then she gets a haircut and it's like, oh, it's not really what I wanted or it's not quite. I mean, I just wonder if this is what it's like in households across the nation.
3:33Jason Hoyte:Do you think that might have something to do with the fact that a lady getting a haircut is most often a far larger investment than it is for a man?
3:43Mike Minogue:Yeah, it costs a lot more. Because you can walk into one of those walk-in barbers at a mall or something, Jase, pay them$10 and say, fix my head. Whereas they'll go to like a fancy hairdressers and spend a couple of hundred or even more.
3:55Jason Hoyte:No, it's hundreds of dollars.
3:57Mike Minogue:You don't need to tell.
3:58Keyzie:Well, that's the other thing, fellas. Hundreds of dollars. Well, why don't you? Hundreds of dollars to then come home and burst into tears and talk about how much they hate it.
4:08Mike Minogue:Well, why don't you? And this is serious. Why don't you, Pugs, you're good with this sort of thing. Why don't you have a chat to Jase's wife next time? I am good at that, actually. Because you're very good at walking around and having a shit lid and just sort of dealing with it.
4:22Keyzie:Would you, Pug? I'd appreciate it, man. I'm also really good at talking to Jase's wife. And it's funny you should say that because when my wife is crying over her haircut, I go, well, look at old Pug-san. Do you see him bawling his eyes out with his atrocities? No.
4:37Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki.
4:42Keyzie:Yes, indeed, the Black Crows there on the Radio Hauraki Big Show this Monday evening. Fellas, let's give out some advice.
4:53Jason Hoyte:MeetPettyNips69 at gmail.com Get in touch.
4:58Mike Minogue:With the fellas! It's a real email address, MeetPettyNips69 at gmail.com Do get in touch, 100 % anonymous, and you'll get a prize if we read it out on the show, eh, pugs? Yeah, man. What have you got for us today, brother?
5:12Jason Hoyte:In your own time? God, it's only live radio we're doing. Sorry, I'm just recoiling from the way you butchered my sting earlier. We have a pretty short and sweet one here today, guys, and it sort of lends itself to people's careers. It's from Anonymous. Right. And it says, fellas, I have a dilemma. The boss has offered me a promotion at work. Congrats, Anonymous. But I'm not sure whether to take it or not. More pay equals more problems. The wife thinks I should But I don't think I want to I half-arse my way through every day And just want to live a mediocre career In my little box of comfort You guys think I should take it?
5:53Mike Minogue:Cheers Mo' money, mo' problems, Jase I mean, you learned that the hard way Yeah, man It is interesting, right? Because there are people in life And I think I was like this for a while I'm not anymore Where you're always wanting more Yeah, man You always want to be earning more you're always wanting a better job, the grass is greener. Yes. But if you can get to a point where you're actually just like, no, this is great, like this fella clearly is, maybe getting a promotion isn't a good thing because you might become a manager or, you know, all of a sudden you're in charge of people, the thing you love doing you're not even doing anymore because you're just managing a team instead.
6:28Jason Hoyte:To counter your point, Kesey, I think it's pretty easy to be comfortable where you are when you're at the top, man, like yourself, you know what I mean? You've just had a shoot in Women's Day.
6:37Keyzie:To be fair to Keezy, he's had his ups and downs as well. He's got his Game of Two halves money, Jase. He doesn't need a promotion. Well, yeah, I don't even know if that's coming back. He's been ditched from a couple of TV shows. Ditched. You know what I mean? And that's a classic example of overreaching, isn't it? Yeah. You know what I mean? Well, me. Yeah. And so it's better to just be in your comfort zone as a top radio DJ like you and I, Keezy, a top radio. I'm all G with that. I've had a stellar career with all sorts of massive success. That's the thing with you, Jase. You know, money doesn't buy you happiness, Pugzone.
7:15Mike Minogue:And that's the thing. You look at Jase, right? He's had a massive career. You count the successes, like Talkback. Yeah. Dog Squad, how many seasons of that? 13. That's pretty good. I mean, it's mostly about the dogs. Brokenwood. Brokenwood Mysteries. 13. 13 seasons.
7:32Keyzie:How many just incidentally, The Datch, how many were there? How many seasons?
7:36Mike Minogue:just the one that I was fired. Oh, right, okay. So, yeah, I just think if you are happy, right, great. However, if your wife thinks you should do it because maybe some more money would help the family, maybe you've got kids.

7:51Keyzie:Yeah, that's a problem.
7:52Mike Minogue:That's when you have to stop thinking about yourself and maybe think, hey, hey, maybe I need to step up here. But maybe not, who knows? I don't have the answer. Why are you coming to me for advice?
8:05Mike Minogue:Just do you, man. That is the shittest advice. That means nothing. But yeah, just do you anonymous. Hope it all works out for you, man.
8:14Keyzie:No, seriously. If he doesn't, if he, I mean, there's people like Pugsan who's massively ambitious. Oh, yeah. We'll chuck anyone under the bus to get to the top. That's right. And ultimately, Pugs may very well get to the top, but at what price, Keezy?
8:28Mike Minogue:Yeah. You know what I mean? I don't think he will, but yeah.
8:30Keyzie:He'll walk into the office and people will look at him and go,
8:34Mike Minogue:that piece of shit. And I won't be able to hear them from all the way at the top. It's already happening, to be honest. Yeah, true. So, yeah, well, I hope that helped Anonymous. And for sharing with us, you will get a prize. What is it, Pugs? The prize. Huh? What's the prize? Pugs, Studio B. Do we not have any prizes? Huh? Sure we do. What is it? I'll figure it out. Backbone shirt. Maybe.
8:59Keyzie:Can you specify, please?
9:01Mike Minogue:Maybe. You're never going to get to the top, Pugs, if you don't have prizes lined up, all right? I'm going to burn my bridge with you fellas. The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at four on Radio Hauraki.
9:14Keyzie:Yes, indeed, the offspring there on the Radio Hauraki Big Show this Tuesday evening. The time is 5.27 now. We're going down to Dunedin tomorrow. One of the things we're planning on doing is dropping off a massive crate of Toledos to a lucky flat in Dunedin, a student flat. We've just been talking to pugs about what sort of language we need to use, what the young people are saying these days, and I think we're all G on that front, Kesey.
9:40Mike Minogue:Actually, all G is quite a good one. All G? Okay, good. Because that means all good, right? Yeah, I think so.
9:45Jason Hoyte:Yeah, so are sayings and stuff pretty good? Yeah, yeah, I think you guys are set, honestly. You run any of those, instant rapport. Okay, good shit.
9:53Mike Minogue:Another thing, though, is sort of like outfits. I don't want to say outfits because outfit sounds a bit, you know, but like what should I wear so that when I go to the flat, they look at me and go, oh, wow, that guy's cool.
10:05Keyzie:Well, can I just start this off by saying sure as hell don't be wearing that pink jacket. They'll smack the crap out of you. You reckon? Yeah, man. Why? Because it's pink? Yeah. What's wrong with pink?
10:16Mike Minogue:Not nothing. It's just, you know. Seems like I've got a pretty old-fashioned view there, Jase. It's actually faded red, and that's what I'll say to them before they start kicking the shit out of me. I'll be like, hey, it's actually faded red, fellas.
10:26Keyzie:It's more that it's an Auckland vibe. Oh, okay. You know what I'm saying? And it's very manicured and pressed and immaculate.
10:34Mike Minogue:They like a bit of filth in Dunedin. Right, so should I lose the neckerchief as well? Yes, definitely the neckerchief.
10:39Jason Hoyte:The kervet. The kervet, yeah. Just on the filth and how they love it, I think Jay said it would go really well if you wore any of your hoodies or any of your caps just to kind of like really slide in there.
10:50Keyzie:Yeah, totally. I was thinking maybe of compromising a little bit on the cap front and having it backwards. Oh, yeah? Yeah. I mean, wearing what I'm wearing because I look good. Yeah. And it's just like a backwards cap. Maybe a bit of bling, you know, that sort of thing. Dirty dog, sunnies. Oh, no. Jace the Nuss styles. It's pretty grey and miserable down there. I don't think I need sunnies.
11:10Mike Minogue:Is bling still a thing, Pugs? Bling. Like people don't wear bling. Students don't wear bling, right? Well, look how many bloody rings Pugs has got on. Well, he's different, though. He likes to flaunt his wealth, whereas students who are down there, they are living on the bones of their ass. I certainly was when I was a student. So I don't think going down there blinged up is a good idea, is it?
11:26Jason Hoyte:I think it's cool if you wear heaps of rings and have as many weird tattoos as possible. Just before going down there, yeah.
11:34Keyzie:Just randomly all over your body. No real theme.
11:37Mike Minogue:No, just say exactly like what you're running. What's that? Okay, so run a pug set up. Okay, that's interesting.
11:44Keyzie:I wonder if we can get some fake tat stuff before we go down.
11:48Mike Minogue:Some fake tats?
11:49Keyzie:Yeah, just, you know those.
11:50Mike Minogue:Massive fake tats?
11:52Jason Hoyte:Yeah, yeah. Could get some fake piercings too, fellas, if you really want to fly in there.
11:56Keyzie:Like your nose ring.
11:57Mike Minogue:Yeah, yeah. Yeah, but I don't want to be a dick, though. Yeah, I think so. Let's lock in. Jase, you're going to wear that? Yes. Hat backwards. I'll lose the pink jacket and the neckerchief. It's just too Auckland. Okay, I'll put on a swiney or something. Yeah, now you're talking. Yeah, yeah, that's very Dunedin. Pugs, you're just going to go as you are with your weird tattoos and your piercings and stuff? Yeah, yeah, my heaps of rings and stuff. And I think, Jase, if overnight you get into a bunch of massive fake tats, and then I think we're sorted. Yeah.
12:30Jason Hoyte:Actually, Jase, if you want to, if people ask how you've been or whatever and you want to say that you've been busy or that you've been enjoying the city life, if you tell them that you've been gooning, they'll get right around. Really? Is that a thing? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, okay. So it's like, oh, you know, like instead of chilling. Big chilling. Oh, I've been gooning.
12:52Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hodaki.
