In short

The Hauraki Big Show episode mixes radio banter, a tsunami advisory update for New Zealand, overseas travel mishaps involving the hosts’ absent colleagues, footy ticket giveaways, TV commentary, and a live studio interview with Jeremy Piven ahead of his Auckland stand-up show.

Guests (in-studio)

Jeremy Piven, actor/stand-up comedian known for Ari Gold on Entourage. Also mentioned: Joseph Parker (boxer) as an audience member at Piven’s show.

Guest backgrounds

Piven is an Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor; he’s appeared in Black Hawk Down, Heat, RocknRolla, Smoking Aces, and others, and performs stand-up at SkyCity Theatre.

Key claims

A Kamchatka 8.8 earthquake triggered a tsunami advisory; stay away from water/harbours/beaches. Piven says he started acting at age 8 with his parents and that stand-up keeps him “on stage” and improves acting.

Notable examples

Pi Awards described as a huge 70s-themed production; “mogi” impressions contest for Reburger vouchers; Jeremy Piven claims he’s “gone a couple of rounds” with Joseph Parker.

0:00The Hauraki Big Show. Thanks to crave-worthy street food. Freshly made with Reburger. Don't fight it. It's time to go up a size. This is the biggest, biggest, biggest, biggest, this is the biggest, our biggest show. The Hauraki Big Show. With Jason Hoyt, Mike Minogue and Keezy. Oh, g'day you mad bass. It's great to have you accompanied this beautiful Wednesday afternoon. It is the 30th of July, 2025, and you, as always, are listening to the Radio Hodaki Big Chode, brought to you by Reburger. Seven good times and good food. Dine-in or take away Reburger today. Reburger, b***h. Sauce chickens. Reburger, Reburger.

0:44Yeah, great stuff. And I can tell you, quite seriously, we've got a massive show today. Oh, yeah. Really massive. We've got Jeremy Piven coming in. Of course, star of Entourage. Aye. And a slew of other movies. He's in Black Hawk Down, he's in Heat. What else have I got here? Heat, Rock and Roller, Smoking Aces. So have you done some preparation, have you, Pugson? As any journalist should, yeah. So what, you're a journalist now, eh? Well, no, but if you work in media and you're on a radio show. You're quite argumentative today, Jase. How are you, mate? I'm okay, man. You want to talk about it, man?

1:18My wife's left me, Pugs. You're bloody joking. But we'll get into that later on in the show. Oh, okay. Also, we've got a bit of an update on the Fjellas. Oh, yeah. We haven't heard from them at all, but we know what's going on, so we'll let you know in the meantime. Let's kick off with R.E.M. The Hauraki Big Show with Jason Hoyt, Mike Minogue and Keezy. Yes, indeed, queens of the Stone Age there on the Hauraki Big Show this Wednesday afternoon. You're nailing that. Now, Paksan, thanks, man. It's growing on me, actually. What, your chode? Yes. Oh, yeah. Last night, of course, was the Pi Awards.

1:57It was. You got all dressed up for it, as did most of the Hauraki crew. Talk me through it because I must admit to being a little bit concerned that I'd have a kesey scenario today with old Pugsam. I got a big interview today. Yeah. And that you might be a bit hungover. How'd you go? Well, how do I sound, Jase? Do I sound nasally? No, you sound hot, man. Yeah, see? Then sweet as. No, it was a bloody good night, actually. It was at the Courtas Hotel there in their big function room. It was huge. I don't know who's funneling all this money into the pie industry, but it was like massive three screens, different shapes, multiple performers.

2:30You had people on there in roller skates. There was a YMCA routine. In leotards, you were saying. Huh? You were saying there were people in there wearing leotards on roller skates. Yeah, there were a couple of people in leotards, sure. Feels very sort of Americana, sort of 70s kind of vibe. It was. That's what it was. It was a 70s theme. Yes. And it was absolutely massive. It was great to sit there with the team. A few others from around the office in the industry as well. So, yeah, it was a bloody good night. Good on you, mate. And some good food. And it looked like you behaved yourself. Thank you.

3:00I've got to say, because I was concerned. Now, just in terms of the fellas. Yes. A lot of people are going, what the bloody hell's going on with the fellas? Well, first and foremost, go and check out their Instagram accounts. They're currently in Italy, in the beautiful sunshine, quaffing crap loads of wine. Yeah, so Chris Keynz and Mr Mike Minogue on Insta there, if you want to see their updates. I actually had a little bit of a concern about Chris in particular. So obviously when you're on your Euro summer trip, you're posting heaps of photos and stuff, right? Yes. Now, if you go on Keezy's Insta and you have a look at his latest gallery post, how's this, Jase?

3:40Not one photo of his travelling companion, his wife. Yeah. Not one in the whole post. Now, trouble in paradise? I don't know, man, but I can tell you this. I haven't heard a word from Kesey. Neither. But I got a phone call from his wife. You're joking. Last night with this, you know, a number I didn't recognise at all. Oh, like an Italian extension. Yeah, an Italian extension or something. She was in tears, Pugson. And the reason she was in tears, because you remember Kesey's big floater shoes? God, the boat shoes? Yeah, the boat shoes. Apparently they reek. You're joking. While walking around Italy in the summertime, Jase?

4:19Well, exactly. And she said she's just gagging every night from the reeking of his shoes. Right, yeah, yeah. You know what I mean? They're that stinky. Yeah, well, I mean, you look at the things and they're half foam, so there's not going to be a hell of a lot of breathability in those bad boys for them to be buoyant, is there? Well, he's also got, you know, sort of... I've just got an emergency alert on my phone. That's crazy. Right in the middle of a break. That's unprofessional. Yeah, so she said his shoes reek and it's just making her want to spew. Then we get a message from Mogi, who also hasn't been in touch, saying he's lost his passport the first day he's in Spain.

4:51How good's that? And he has a bit of a reputation for that, doesn't he? He's done it before. Oh, no, I'm getting the bloody... This is just... Hang on. This is the lowest professional show on the planet. Well, it's not our fault we're getting emergency alerts in the middle of a bloody show. Ah, tsunami advisory. What do you think about that, mate? We'll get into that next. I've been completely thrown off. Let's have a bit of Lenny Kravitz. Sure. The Hauraki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at four on Radio Hauraki. Yes, indeed. Led Zeppelin there on the Radio Hauraki Big Show this Wednesday afternoon.

5:26I just noticed a line in there that I've never noticed before. I want to be your backdoor man. What do you reckon that's about? I don't know. I don't know, but it's the first time I've ever noticed that. Something secretive, maybe. Listen, in the middle of our last voice break, it was a shambles because we both went off with our alerts on our phone. What the hell's going on, Pugson? Can I just say those are supposed to go out at pretty much the same time and yours was massively delayed, which says a lot about your piece of shit Android phone. Can I just say on that front, the last time this happened, my wife got it and my daughter got it and I got mine.

5:58This is absolutely true five hours later. I was like, why haven't I gotten a bloody alert on my phone, for God's sake? They're trying to tell you something. Essentially, there was a massive earthquake near Kamchatka in Russia, So an 8.8, and apparently that can cause some strong currents and surges, so just be careful. This pretty much advises for everywhere. So North Island, Great Barrier Island, South Island, Stewart Island, and the Chathams as well. If you are onshore, you don't need to evacuate, but stay away from the water. So we're fine. Including beaches, shore areas, harbours, marinas, rivers, and estuaries.

6:32Do not go sightseeing, it says in capital letters. So there you go. That's about it. I was going to do a bit of a fish tonight for the high tide down there at Armour Bay. I don't know. That's all G. Yeah, don't know me. It's funny, isn't it? Because you think Russia is bloody miles away. Surely it's not going to affect us here. But you've got to be safe, New Zealand. You've got to be safe. Now, we were talking about the fellas. Kesey's wife not happy about his floaters absolutely reeking. Yeah. So she rang me in tears last night. Mogi, his first day in Spain today, has lost his passport. Now, this is the extraordinary thing about Mogi.

7:06In many respects, he's totally on to it. He's one of the most dedicated, hardworking people I think I've ever met in my life as far as just being committed to working all the time, organizing stuff all the time. But on the other side of the coin, he's a complete shambles. Yeah. You'll recall when we went to Brisbane, Pugson, and this is before we even arrived at Brisbane, he lost his wallet. Yeah, he also left his laptop at home as well. And I was going to say, he said, oh, well, I might as well do some work then while I'm here. And he left his bloody laptop behind. So we used mine, and then when we got over there, Hedwell only brought one pair of jandals.

7:42Yes. And then the second day we were there, broke the jandals. Yeah. Absolute shambles. I'll tell you what, I'm not happy with the fellas, because they promised to send Sue some voice messages for us to play on the show to keep us updated on what they were doing over there. But did they do that? No, they didn't, Puckser. No, I haven't heard one peep from them, actually. Oh, filthy. And also that means we have to come up with more content, which is kind of even worse. Yes. You know what I mean? Like, nobody wants to hear us yarning, man. I mean, it's all very well sitting in Italy quaffing wine, but don't abandon your mates at the same time.

8:12100%. You're part of the Big Show team, man. Quaffers. God. Shocker. The Hauraki Big Show with Jason Hoyt, Mike Minogue and Keezy. Roxanne there on the radio, Hauraki Big Show this Wednesday afternoon. Do you know this? It's a true story. That used to be my go-to karaoke song back in the day. Are you serious? I'm serious. And I'm listening to it now and I'm thinking to myself, It's awfully high. Why on earth would I think I could, I just spat all over the microphone. Why on earth did I think I could sing that? But I actually did. I wanted to get into karaoke songs another day. You want to know what mine is?

8:51Not really. Cool. We actually got a text on 3483 regarding the fellas overseas losing their passports, not taking photos with their wives, et cetera, et cetera. Someone here said, A bit rich, that genius hoity jizz calling out somebody for losing their wallet or their passport when he basically gifted his wallet to the thieves. That's true. I still haven't heard anything about that, by the way. Nice. Hey, let's have some Waz chat. Time to chat footy with me, Keezy. What are the Warriors up to? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, I can tell you what they're up to. They're playing the Dolphins 8 o 'clock on Friday, so we've got some double passes to give away.

9:31G'day, Jacob, you mad bastard. How's life? Yeah, not too bad, fellas. Yourself? Yeah, good thanks, mate. Good, good. What do you do for a crust there, Jacob? I'm a builder. Yeah. Bloody sound like one, too. Yeah, what a massive backbone. I want to tell you what, Jacob, mate, you've won yourself a double pass. How does that sound? That sounds amazing. Good on you, mate. You stay on the line and Big Dilly and Studio B will look after you. No worries at all. Courts, you mad bastard. How's life? Yes, for better, I reckon. Yeah, good on you, mate. What do you do for a crust, Quartz? Oh, you know, air con, just keeping the air moving, brother.

10:11Oh, backbone. That's a real backbone way to sum up that you're working air con. Just keeping the air moving, brother. Oh, man, you guys would have been struggling in the studio without us. Oh, I don't doubt it. I don't doubt it, especially with Hootie J's farts 24-7. I tell you what, actually, Quartz, what they do do in the studio, and this is true, is at about 5 o 'clock, They cut off the air con, and so they're suddenly freezing our balls off. It's like everyone goes home. What's that? They do that on purpose so that everyone who's wearing a tie fucks off. That's great air con chat. Yeah, yeah, that's nice.

10:46That's good from you. Court, you got yourself a double pass. What are you going to take with you, mate? I'm going to take my daughter, I think. Oh, how good. Because I'm a massive Warriors fan, yeah. Yeah, good on you, man. You enjoy those tickets. You can stay on the line and old Big Dilly will look after you. G'day, Matt, you mad bastard. How's life? Yeah, good, thanks, fellas. How are you? Yeah, good, thanks, mate. What do you do for a crust? I'm a stay-at-home dad. Oh, massive backbone. You know, people say, you know, it's easy. It's not easy being a stay-at-home dad. Yeah, that's what you were saying just before we went on air.

11:20You were like, God, I hope we don't get any stay-at-home dads. No, I wasn't, Pugson. You know, and I think the most important job in the world, Matt, and this applies to men and women, is staying at home and looking after your kids, mate. 100%. Yeah, that's what I tell my wife when she's paying all the bills. Yeah. Beautiful. Good on you, mate. You're doing well, mate. Stay on the line. Hey, Matt, who are you going to take, by the way? Oh, I'd have to take the bill payer. Oh, yeah, good on you, mate. That's only fair. Massive backbone. Stay there and Big Dilly will look after you. No worries. Kortz, that's an interesting name, isn't it?

11:51I wanted to ask him if it was short for Courtney. Well, it was a dude. So? A dude's called Courtney? Maybe. I don't know. What else would it be short for? Well, yeah. Texas on 3483. I don't know. The Hodaki Big Show Podcast. Arctic Monkeys here on the radio Hodaki Big Show this Wednesday afternoon. The timer is 4.45. Let's talk TV. What's on the telly with Mike Minogue?

12:27Yeah!

12:36Great stuff, Pugs. Thanks, man. I feel like it gets better every day. I agree, man. Thanks, man. Now, I had one of those nights with my wife last night. Oh, one of those? No, no. Oh. That's once a month. Cool. It is cool. But, you know, because we finished Severance, of course, the night before. Yeah. And so we were just sort of chitty-chatting, and we weren't really focused on the TV. So we ended up watching a show just because it was on. Okay. You know what I mean? It was like, oh, we might as well watch this. And it was called I'm in Love with a Mama's Boy. Okay. Now the basic premise of the show is it's dudes who go out on dates and date women, but who are in essence total mama's boys.

13:30Like mama is the most important person in his life, and the girlfriend and or date is very secondary. Okay, so fellas that haven't quite moved out of home yet. Totally. Their mums have like a weird connection with them that's kind of marginal. Yes, and there's one guy that went on his first date, and every first date that he goes on, his mum goes along with him, which is kind of weird. And gross. And so, you know, he goes to the bar, he meets the woman, and she's like, hi, how are you? And then he goes, oh, by the way, this is my mum. And it's like, oh, okay. If I was the lady in that scenario, I might hang around for about 15 minutes just to get a gauge on and psychoanalyse these weird freaks.

14:19Sure. Otherwise I'd be pissing off. You know what I mean? Maybe getting a free drink or something like that. Oh, absolutely. The other weird relationship, which you kind of touched on briefly there yourself, is a weirdly sexual one between this very manicured woman and her son who she likes to buy sort of, they've got a little spa pool, and she likes to buy him tight little sort of bathers. Okay. And they sit in the spa together and drink wine, and she pats him on and whacks him on the ass, and is like, you're so good, they so suit you sort of thing. So it was a really uncomfortable, weird kind of show.

14:59I give it five buzies. Can I just say, that's a real out of left field show for you. For a thespian such as yourself Yes Who watches some of the more sophisticated TV shows That I personally have ever heard of Well generally at night I like to sit down and read literature Or maybe listen to a bit of opera or something like that But every now and then Yeah But as I say it was just one of those things Because my wife and I couldn't be asked And it was just on So we just watched it You read any Freud when you're home at night man? All the time Obviously I didn't watch anything last night because I was at the Pi Awards.

15:36And also I have to apologise. Somebody messaged me and said, stop spoiling Love Island. The people love it, Jase. Who's this man? Aerosmith. The Hauraki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at four on Radio Hauraki. Aerosmith there on the Radio Hauraki Big Show this Wednesday afternoon. Now listen up, big guest coming in between five and six, Park San. That's right. If anybody listening is a fan of Entourage, the man who plays Ari Gold, his name is Jeremy Piven. He'll be joining us after 5.30. But he hasn't just been in Entourage, Jase. What else has he been in, Pugson? He's been in a shite load of movies.

16:18Some have known Black Hawk Down, The Kingdom, Heat, Rock and Roller, Smoking Aces, to name a few. And he's performing live tomorrow night at the Sky City Theatre. I'll be honest with you. I haven't seen Entourage. Honestly, neither have I. I know Big Dilly's a huge fan in Studio B. Mogi was gutted that he couldn't be here. He would have cancelled his Europe trip so he could be here to interview him. In fact, I haven't seen any of the stuff he's been in. You haven't seen Heat. You think that's going to be a problem or what? You haven't seen Black Hawk Down. Have you done some preparation for this part?

16:50Are you too busy watching shows about boys dating with their mums? Maybe, maybe. But yes, Jeremy Piven after 5 o 'clock. Stay tuned. The Hauraki Big Show with Jason Hoyt, Mike Minogue and Keezy. You're welcome back, Emissive Backbones. Hope you're getting through your hump day tickety-boo. You're listening to The Hauraki Big Show brought to you by Reburger. Beef, chicken, vegan and veg-o options. Reburger, redefining the norm. Reburger.

17:22Yummy. Yes. Good stuff, man. Thanks, man. I do a pretty good mogey impression, I thought. Yeah, I think you've got to switch it up a little bit more, though. You've tried maybe one other one, but it's always been yummy. Yeah, well, I've got a lot on my mind at the moment, Pugsana. I can't be doing everything. Do you want to talk about it? Just on that front, by the way, speaking about Mogey, coming up next we're going to be talking about the fact that they haven't sent us any voicemails. We've already talked about that. So we're going to audition people, or we want people to send in their Mogey impressions that we can play on the show, and the one that gets through will get a$50 re-burger.

17:57That's right. We might run this over a couple of days, but we want your input through the iHeartRadio Talkback app. So if you've got the app there, it's free to download. There's a little button there that's a microphone if you're listening to the Radio Horaki stream. And you send us a message, and that comes right to us, and you can say whatever you like. Just make sure it's PG. Otherwise, we can't play it on the air. Well, within reason. It can be M. If it's something that Mogi says or Kese says, you know what I mean, then you're on the right track. I think we start off with Mogi first. Just give us your best mogi.

18:28Yeah, or give us a call on 0800 Hauraki. Yeah, great stuff, mate. Oh, tune. Huge tune. The Hauraki Big Show with Jason Hoyt, Mike Minogue and Keezy. Guns.

18:45What's that? That was real weird, Pugs. That noise you made, it was disturbing. So we've solicited for something, haven't we, Jase? Yes, we have. Well, the fellas were meant to send us all these voice messages while they were overseas, but they didn't do any of that. Sort of to help us fill out the content, kind of just trudge over to the finish line, hobble over there, you know. Exactly. There's two-thirds of the show missing at the moment. And, you know, fellas, help us out here, and they haven't done that. So we solicited for your best sort of Mogey impression, which we could maybe slot in there, and we thought the best one we could give a$50 re-burger voucher to.

19:21That's right. We want this through the iHeartRadio Talkback app. If you download the app, it's free. There's a little microphone button on the Hauraki stream. You hold that down. You send us your message. It's easy as that. Or by calling us on 0800Hauraki. And don't get me wrong, Jase. This applies to the people that are listening back to the radio highlights on our podcast later today. Send them in. We want to hear them. We've got a couple. Yeah, okay. Let's have a go.

19:45Is that my wife? Jase.

19:51Wow. I've got to say. was very, very good. That was really impressive. The rest of it was kind of just like a cool dude impression of Moogie. Is that my wife? Yeah, sure. Not bad. Not bad. I'll give it three buzies. Three buzies just right on average there. Yes. Okay, we've got one more here. My name is Mr. Bean. Wow. Okay. That's how you do it, man. five out of five buzies from old Pugson. We've reached that point, have we? Yeah, keep them coming. We'll draw some winners at the end of the week. Good stuff, mate. Hey, Jase, can I talk to you for a sec, man? Sure. You seem a little down, brother.

20:38You're a little bit antsy, maybe argumentative in some cases, defensive. And you've got this really weird look on your face, but I don't know if that's just how you look. Do you want to talk about it, man? Thanks for asking, Pugson. Sure. Well, look, firstly, the fellas have gone and... Feeling pretty down about that. Yeah. Old Hoity Jay on the golf course there playing by himself. Old No-Mates Hoyt, they call him. Do-doosh. Off the tee. You know, the tragedy actually is. I mean, I don't care so much that Kesey's not there. Oh, OK. It's just I'm playing like a genius at the moment and there's no one there to kind of acknowledge it.

21:19Yeah. You just keep letting me know, man. I hit two hole-in-ones the other day. Was anyone there? No siree, Bob. Anyway, to add to my misery, my wife's left me. Wait, are you serious? Yeah, man, she left today. Flew overseas with my youngest daughter. She took your daughter with her? Yeah, she's off to Melbourne. I mean, the nice thing is they left Jizz, the cat. Oh, right. Yeah, sure. Hang on, I just wanted to fire this off.

21:52I mean I didn't even want jizz

21:59Yeah You know what I mean I was against the idea of getting a cat Yeah And so now my wife's buggered off overseas to Melbourne To hang out with all my other daughters over there Taking my youngest daughter with me And I'm left with jizz I'm sorry man that's terrible Because you guys have been married like 20 Yeah 28 years 28 years Yeah it's terrible man You know and so I'm going to be forced into the bachelor life. So you've sort of been left to deal with all the divorce papers and stuff like that? All of it, mate. All of it. She's like, I just don't care. I just want half. I did wonder why she looked so miserable when she was hanging out with you at FMO on the weekend.

22:32Yeah. But really excited to see me. Yeah, she loves you and particularly how beautiful your skin is. Yeah, that's very kind. So, yeah, she's done and dusted, mate. She's just moved on. She said, I want half of everything. You sort it. I'm going to Melbourne. Jeez, I'm sorry, man. And I'm here for you. I genuinely am here for you. I appreciate that. I mean, it's not all bad. It'd be easy to pick my Netflix, you know, what I'm going to watch on Netflix. You can watch some more Mama's Boy TV shows, eh? Yeah, exactly. A bit of a de-douche. I can get stuck into myself. What do you mean? Well, you know, just have a go at myself.

23:05Oh, that'll be fun. I can. You know, because when the cat's away, Pugs-Awn, you know what I mean? And they leave you. You're just left to your own devices. I can order some pizzas. Wait, which cat are you talking about? Oh, no, Jizz is still with me. Ah, okay, right, thank goodness. You know what I mean? And it's nice because you can rip arse. Oh, of course. You know what I mean? I don't have to care about that stuff anymore and grow my beard, keep my trackies on, make a bit of a mess on the couch there. You were saying the arse-rapping was a big reason why she left. Yeah, well, I've got to that age now where actually I can't contain it.

23:43I used to try and, you know, be polite and go outside and do it, Buy my tomatoes, of course, you'll recall. Oh, your tofados. And now they just rip out. I can't do anything about it. And she's just disgusted. Comes with the territory, man. Loose sphincter and all that. Sort of a bit of ACDC. Yeah, man. I'm here for you, by the way. Thanks, Paxson. The Hauraki Big Show Podcast. Yes, indeed. Live there on the Radio Hauraki Big Show this Wednesday afternoon. Can I just say, even though I want you to say that correctly every time, it's still throwing me off. Right, okay. It's still new in my mind, so every time you say chode, it throws me off.

24:22But I'm excited, man. I'm loving it so far. Hey, I'll be honest with you, by the way. We put it out there on the Instagram last night. We have had so many ideas, which we'll talk about after 6 o 'clock. Absolutely. My front runner, weirdly enough, is still Spoon Boy and the Jizz. Nobody's ever called me that in my life. because obviously you're the jizz because of, you know, hoity jizz. Hoity jizz. Yes. Nobody's ever called me Spurmboy. It suits you, man. I'm so curious how. I don't know why, Pugs. It just fits you so well. Okay. But anyway, we were asking for Mogey impressions because the lazy bastard hasn't sent us through any voice messages, which he promised.

25:08Yeah. And so people have been sending through their Mogey impressions. the best one is going to get a$50 Reburger voucher. That's right. And we might hire you next week because we miss them so much. Yeah, sure. We've got another week of it, don't we? Don't sound too excited. Now, these are coming through the iHeartRadio Talkback app, the little microphone icon there. You hold that down and you send us a message. Here's one here. Hey, fellas. It's me, Keezy here. I'm just ringing up from Europe to say, man, my wife, are having a great time. Although my asthma has been playing up ever since the air con on the planes.

25:43And I've got swimmers here. But backbone, backbone, backbone. Da douche, da douche. Huge honkers. Well, firstly, we said mogey, so that was kesey. One buzzy. A little bit off base there. Although, as far as kesey, you know, with the air con and the asthma and the swimmers there and stuff, but it's not a kesey day. So save that one in the bank. Keep the mogey ones coming. I've got another one here. Should we play it back? Yeah, sure. Yeah, g'day, flaylers. I was just wondering, does a glass really bubble when you're looking out the window pane and you ask yourself, do the winds really change when I look out the seas?

26:17I had a lollipop one day and I wondered to myself, would this taste just as good if I was a tree whistling through the wind or a pilot taking the seas? And I ask myself these questions daily, but it just never really makes much more sense to me than that, I guess. Garbage. One buzzy out of five. The hell was he talking about? I have no idea. Now, Jase, we've got a big interview, don't we? Yeah, we do, man. If you are a fan of the hit show Entourage, I think that's probably the show that most people know our next guest from, Jeremy Piven. 100%. He plays Ari Gold, the iconic character. He's won, I believe, three Emmys, two Golden Globes, amongst a slew of other wins and nominations.

27:06Yes. And so he's coming up next. Beautiful. The Hauraki Big Show with Jason Hoyt, Mike Minogue and Keezy. Well, yes, indeed. Welcome back, you massive backbones. You're listening to the radio Hauraki Big Show with Pug San and Hoidi J. And it's not often we are lucky enough to have a superstar in the studio with us, but we are today. Our next guest has a glittering, award-winning acting career as well as being an accomplished stand-up comedian who's about to show his comic wares to the people of Auckland City tomorrow night, I believe. He's probably best known, though I don't know this for a fact, for his role as Ari in the hugely popular show Entourage.

27:51But who knows, he's played so many outstanding roles. You can take your pick. I'm talking, of course, of the great Jeremy Piven, who joins us now. G'day, Jeremy. How's life? It's fantastic, man. I've never been better. I am peaking right now. You're peaking right now. As a human being. No, no, because I just took mushrooms. So I'm literally peaking. Yeah, fantastic. It's a race against time, boys. We're big advocates for microdosing on the show, so you're in the right place. This is a macrodose, sir. Yeah, yeah. Well, actually, funnily enough, Pugsana had a big night last night. You're still on the mushrooms, aren't you, Pugsana?

28:24Yeah, well, they haven't quite worn off yet. It's a long trip. It's a long trip. We're down to about microdose. Yeah, yeah. Okay, cool, man. Hey, Jeremy. Well, listen. Yes? The great thing about your job is you guys can come in. And you guys, and I say this with love, you both look like you're about to work on my car. You know what I mean? That is a huge compliment. Yeah. You know, what you're essentially saying, Jeremy, is we've got faces for radio. No, you don't. I wasn't. You're both very good looking gentlemen. I'm just saying you do look like, you know, you've got the trucker caps on. You've got what looks like upscale pajamas.

28:57I don't know what you're wearing. Yeah, sure, man. It's really adorable, though, whatever's happening. Well, can I say on that front, you're looking very sharp. I'm actually really pleased that you've made an effort, Jeremy. Yeah, I made a big effort. I was going to dress up. Yeah, what happened? And then I thought, you know, I just really can't be arsed. And also, I didn't want to be coming across as too try-hard. Oh, I heard that. Because obviously you're a huge star. It's like, you know, I'd be self-conscious. I'm more comfortable in my dirty old jeans. And your weird hoodie. And my weird hoodie.

29:28You know what I mean? Hey, Jeremy, seriously, is this your first time in New Zealand? It is my first time here. I just got here, and I've been walking around, and I went to the theater. I went to the Sky City Theater where I'm performing. Yes. And it's a stunning theater. It's beautiful. And, you know, there are tickets left. Can I tell you who else will be at the theater? I'm not supposed to, but I think I'm going to. We'd love to hear. Fill your boots. There's a guy named Joe Parker. Do you guys know him? He's a boxer. Yeah, Joseph Parker. Yeah. We've interviewed him a few times. Of course you have.

30:03I've actually gone a couple of rounds with him. It really looks like you have, to be honest with you. I wasn't going to say it. No, no, no, my man. Yeah. I don't know what happened. Yeah. Well, he got his comeuppance is what happened, Jeremy. Oh, really? He got the bejesus smacked out of him. Stop it. I don't look like a sort of physically intimidating guy, but, mate, once you get me riled up, kidney punch, kidney punch, uppercut. He was on the floor. Stop us. Yeah, yeah. Why is he going to be there? So wait, the number one ranked heavyweight in the world right now, you gave him trouble. Yeah, I gave him a whoop-arson.

30:41Well, I'm going to have to verify that if you don't mind. To be honest, I think he'll probably be quite embarrassed about that. That's incredible. You know, he'll probably deny the fact that old Hoity J smacked the crap out of him. You know, but can I, is he doing a stand-up set or something? What's going on there? Yeah, he's one of the funniest people on the planet. He's doing a solid, tight 45 minutes. Wow. No, no, no, my man. He's just going to show up. He's an elite athlete. He's just a friend of mine. He'll be in the audience. And I hopefully will not be viciously mediocre. I'll be making them laugh.

31:13That's what I do. Yeah, man. Yeah. Well, that's the preference when you're doing stand-up comedy is you do make people laugh. Yeah. But just to be clear, the 31st, because I can't tell if I'm in the future. Yeah. I just got off a plane. Yes. I don't know. And you're on Mushy's. Yes, indeed. And obviously you'll give Pug San and I a couple of tickets. No, no, no. I don't want you guys anywhere near the building. There'll be a restraining order on both of you. Is that how it's going to go? No, no, no. Are you kidding? I want you guys there for many reasons. Jeremy, can I ask you, what came first for you, by the way?

31:43Was it the stand-up comedy or was it the acting? Or did they both come at the same time? Well, that sounded wrong. Yeah. There's nothing wrong with that. Yeah, it's better when we all come at the same time. Sure. Yeah. Good night, everyone. Thank you for coming. Literally. Thank you for coming. Let me get back on track. You asked me an adorable question. Was it adorable, was it? It was. I started acting at eight years old with Joyce Piven, my mother and my father. They put me up on stage at the Piven Theater. And we did a lot of improv, a lot of scene study, and I was butchering great works of art.

32:16Yeah. John Cusack and I, another actor, we were both children and they threw us up on stage and we started studying with my parents. And I just kind of kept going and sketch comedy improv. And then formal stand up came a little bit after the acting. So it's all, you know, intertwined and it informs each other. And this is boring as hell because I'm boring myself. But I can tell you that if you make it out to the right next to the All Blacks exhibit. I'll just hold you there, Jeremy. We'll go to a tune and we'll get back into it, mate. Oh, who's this, Jase? Your fave, eh? The Hauraki Big Show Podcast.

32:57Now, Jeremy Piven, you were saying that you love New Zealand and you're playing your gig right next to the All Blacks exhibition. Yeah, no, I love New Zealand. To be honest with you, the All Blacks are my favourite team because, first of all, it's a sport that is absolutely insane because we wear pads. Yeah, and helmets and stuff. What's that about, man? Harden up. You still get out. Harden up, man. We really need to. We need to. But these guys are incredible. I love watching them play, and they're absolute studs, and I love this country. Yeah, well, I hope you get to see a fair amount of it, actually.

33:30You're only here for a short time. Go and check out Motat, by the way. It's a great sort of old-timey museum here in Auckland City. The Museum of Transport. Yeah, Transport and Technology. Jeremy can go look in some trains. Yeah, that sounds amazing, man. You're probably familiar. That's why I'm here. You're probably familiar with my career as well, Jeremy. You probably did a bit of research before we did this interview. because you probably don't know this. You were saying you did heaps just out there, man. Well read. I'm quite a well-known actor in this country and I did stand-up comedy as well.

34:00Really? The interesting thing about me getting into, I got into acting, I used to be back in the day a male escort. Stop it. No, seriously. Okay, yeah. But that wasn't going too well for me because I was also afflicted by a thing, you might not have heard of it, called Brewer's Droop. No, sir. What is that? Basically, well, I don't know if I want to get into the... Brewer's Troopers... You can get into it, Josh. Come on, we're all mates here. Basically, when you have too many beersies... Oh, okay. And you can't sort of maintain a full erection. Oh, the blood doesn't rush to your power source. No.

34:35That's exactly right. Okay, great. And so I was a male escort with Brewer's Troopers. Oh, my God. Okay. So I got into acting, but I also got into stand-up comedy as well, and that's how I met my agent. Okay. Talk to me a little bit, because one of the things I had to learn is, the big difference between stand-up comedy in terms of performance and on-screen comedy. You know what I mean? There's a vast difference in performance in terms of subtlety and things like that. Was that something you had to learn or what? I just, I really, after doing all of it, to be honest with you, I think one does inform the other.

35:07And oddly enough, because I do stand-up and I just am always on stage, it's made me a better actor, which is weird because, and some comic told me that and I thought that was insane. And the reality is you just have no rust on you as a performer. So you go back to acting and you, because most actors are just sitting idle until they get that job. Yeah. You know. Bleating and moaning about the lack of work and what the hell's their agent doing? Well, I mean. God, this industry sucks. Well, I mean, listen, man, I come from a family of actors. So, you know, I have nothing but love for all of them.

35:41It's a brutal, brutal industry. It is. And, you know, you have to be okay with rejection. and a ton of it. So my heart goes out for all thespians and I can't take shots of them because they'll be taking a shot at myself and my entire family. Would you just, you know, it's interesting because, you know, I've got a lot of pals that are kind of my age who are kind of bitter. Early 80s? I'm terrible. Come on, Jeremy. Come on, man. I'm terrible at this, man. Would you believe me? Don't make me Joe Parker, you buddy. Would you believe me? He's 43. Is that true? He's 43 years old. Holy shit. Check Wikipedia, man.

36:17I'm going to check it right now. No, don't. Don't, because it's a secret. Okay. I've lost my train of thought now. What was I talking about? But, you know, looking through your career, and it has started with massive success. That's kind of you. Award winning. Well, it's just a fact. But something that also strikes me about you, would you describe yourself in all seriousness as quite a driven person? Because you do your acting roles and stuff, but you also get a lot of stuff started. You seem to bring a lot of projects to life. Would that be fair? Well, listen, first of all, you're being very kind to me.

36:53And there's one thing about this country and Australia is they've welcomed me with open arms, and you have to go where you're loved, not where you're tolerated. And I don't know, for whatever reason, I don't know a lot about this country, but I know in Australia they really do kind of celebrate and love all things American, which is amazing to me. Yeah. And I think in the States, you know, listen, it's one of those things where they're looking for that next kind of hot entity. You know what I mean? And you don't you don't necessarily they're not necessarily incredibly loyal. I feel like in the UK they are like they've got their Ralph Fiennes and certain characters, you know.

37:37And then you have people that have never taken an acting class like Jason Statham, who are at the top of their game, and they throw$20 million at him. And I don't know if you saw him in The Beekeeper, but it was amazing. $42 million, thanks, man. Oh, incredible. $42 million. Can you imagine? You hire him for The Beekeeper. He's a beekeeper, but he's really an undercover agent out of the Midwest. Yes. Can we hear that Des Moines, Iowa accent? Action. My name is Jason Statham. Cut. Fantastic. Let's go, Jason. That's beautiful. I'm very bitter. I'm very bitter, guys. You know why I'm bitter? Because I'm playing the Rusty Chuckle Bucket tomorrow night, and he just made$42 million.

38:16Yeah. So I'm a little bitter. No, I'm not. The Sky City Theater is stunning, by the way. Yes, it is. I did go over there, and my God, we're going to have a good time. Yeah. And don't worry about the VIPs are gone and blah, blah, blah. There isn't a bad seat in the house. No, there isn't. Come on out and hug it out, kids. Plus, if you go in and say you know the Hot Eky Big Show, which is Jason Hoyt and Pugson, You get the free meet and greet, obviously. Totally, man. Oh, absolutely. As you said earlier. You'll see us in the second row, actually, because Jeremy said he'd get us a couple of tickets, prime seats there.

38:49Hey, fella. Well, there are no tickets in the second row, and also, no, none. Well, can't you chuck someone out and get us in there? On the 12th of never, we're going to put you right there in the second row. You're going to do a nice job. I don't want you, and I say this with love, in the second row, just because it'll be distracting. Yeah. So I'm going to put you, and again, because that theatre is incredible, any seat is a great seat. Yes, that's true. It is a great theatre. I love it. Pug San, one more time, get the deets out there so people can get along and see old Jeremy. Absolutely. Jeremy Piven live.

39:22You can get tickets still from tegdainty.com. That's T-E-G-D-A-I-N-T-Y.com. Playing at the Sky City Theatre tomorrow night. The Hauraki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy. Tune in weekdays at four on Radio Hauraki. You're welcome back, you massive backbones. Hope you're surviving your Wednesday night. You're listening to the Radio Hauraki Big Show, brought to you by Reburger. Handcrafted burgers, loaded fries and gourmet eats that'll change the game.

39:57That's how you do it, eh, Jase? Yummy. Yeah, yeah, real yummy. You were fretting because your lovely partner just came in before Pugson. Yes. And she offered to cook you a ratatouille. Yeah, which I'm very grateful for. I think she's made it before. She hasn't made it in a long time. Obviously, it's a dish that requires a fair bit of work. But she's had a stressful day, man. So I was like, why don't we just do something easy and we'll save it for another day when we've both got more capacity to make it. Well, you could do your sticky beef. Exactly. I could do my sticky beef. I could do my chili eggs.

40:31I could do my chickpea curry from last night from Pugsans Asian Delights. Yeah, true, true. As I mentioned earlier in the show, my wife's left me. And so it's just occurred to me there is a silver lining. What's that, man? Tonight, Jeremy, I shall be ordering Ree Burger. It's an old connection. You just said tonight, Jeremy. You know what my name is, eh? Yeah, I know what your name is, Pugsans. I haven't completely lost my mind. I'm going to get Reburger. Can you explain the Jeremy thing, please? Well, it was a game show and he'd asked a question and they'd say, tonight, Jeremy, I'm going to be, and they'd come out as a musician.

41:13Ah, I see what you're saying. Yes, okay. Guy, you just kind of ruined it by making me explain it. I think you kind of ruined it by calling me Jeremy. My name's Pagu-san, all right? Speaking of names, we've got a couple of doozies being suggested to us. In the meantime, here's In Excess. The Hauraki Big Show. With Jason Hoyt, Mike Minogue and Keezy. The white stripes there on the radio. Hauraki Big Show. Are you pissed off, Pugs? Huh? You got that look on your face because you told a joke and I went, ha, ha. Well, I wasn't telling you a joke. I was reminding you that we're listening to the white stripes and you need to come out of the white stripes and know that it's the white stripes.

41:51Well, it just seems like. Just doing my job as producer, man. Well, you're not a producer. You're a presenter now. And I'll tell you what I didn't like, Hauraki J. You're a presenter now. The big joke, Jase, is that you almost said Horaki Big Show, and that's not the name of the show. Oh, sorry, The Big Show. Thank you. Now, listen, we are aware of the fact that people at the moment are missing the feels. Yeah. Their voices. And so every now and then, just give us a bit of a break because we're going hammer and tongs at the moment, aren't we, Pugsan? I mean, off air, yeah. Yeah. We'll play a best bit from ages past.

42:20Of course, of course. Now, this is showing Mike Minogue as the greenie that he is. Yes. He loves the environment, and he knew that we had a pest problem in the country, and he figured out the perfect way to solve it. Oh, I think I remember this one. He's bloody good, that Chris Cornell, eh? He gets me thinking. Yeah. He was just saying there, keep it off my wave. Yeah. Keep it off my wave, my wave. Yes. And that reminded me that we've had a few issues with stoats over on the island there. Well, in the sense that actually on Motutapu, there's a couple that have, well, at least one that's gotten loose.

42:57Oh, yeah, I've read about that. And also on Rangitoto. So they're desperately trying to capture this bastard. Yeah, well, it's disastrous, isn't it? Yeah. It's a local flora e fauna. Yeah, yeah. So what I want to do is I want to get my hands on it first because it looks like it's a female. Right, OK. Yeah, I've got a male at home. Male stoat? Yeah, yeah, yeah. On the island? Yeah, yeah. So I need to get a breeding pair again. Why have you got a stoat? Well, as you know, I'm big on animals and sort of conservation. I love my animals. Oh, yeah. And so I had this sort of idea, Jase, where I'd have a farm, a stoat farm and a kiwi farm.

43:37So you have this sort of, and people can come and check it out. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You just have stoats and kiwis. Like a petting zoo. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Nice, nice. But a big bit of land over on the island there. And we, you know, I guess we could have fences, but I'm sort of, I'm not too bothered by that. If you feed them, they will come. Yeah, it seems cruel. Yeah. Seems cruel to sort of fence them all in. Yeah, that's what I reckon. So we'll keep the kiwis fenced in. Yeah. And we'll just have a small hole where the stoats can get in. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So the stoats can come and go as they want.

44:09The thing is, man, I mean, you want to make it as natural as possible, the environment. You know, you don't want to say, what you're saying, like a small hole into the kiwi den. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Well, hang on. Wouldn't the stoats get in there and then murder all the kiwis? Isn't that why we're trying to keep stoats out? No, no, no. Have you seen a kiwi man? They're bloody huge bastards. They're fat ass, man. Yeah, man. They're delicious. Fat. Fat. Wait, are you running a kiwi farm so you can eat them? No, no, no. No, no, no. No, just because the thing is I hate going to a zoo and they always have those dark rooms and they say, come in and have a look at our kiwi.

44:39You can't see jack shit. For love nor wonder. because you were talking to me about the old kiwi farm that you were setting up there, and I thought that was a bloody good idea. And your idea too, of course, within the enclosure there, just to have massively bright neon lights just pumping down. That's right, yeah, yeah, yeah. A couple of spotties in there. Yeah, a couple of spotlights so that people can actually see the kiwi. That's right, and it sort of got to the point because a lot of those places, they have all the brush, the foliage, trees, et cetera, et cetera. And I sort of thought, well, actually, why don't we just put them on a tennis court and we can just use the floodlights from the tennis court?

45:17Yeah, yeah, yeah, makes sense. Makes sense. Yeah, yeah, totally. I'll tell you, it's an experience, Keezy. You see the old Kiwis hurtling across the tennis courts there. Yeah. Stoat in tow. I'll tell you what, because even with just the mail that I've got. Yeah, the stoat. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Jeez, I love playing with my Kiwis. Oh, yeah. Chasing them all around all day they're playing. It's so cute. It's like a game of tag or something. Did you ever find any dead kiwis? Nah. Nah. I mean, the numbers dwindle, but you never find... Yeah, I don't know. I guess they must be getting out of the hole. I guess that's what's happening.

45:53Yeah. But also, aren't kiwis... Which is weird, because they're massively fat. They're huge buggers. Aren't kiwis nocturnal? Like, I feel like that's a really bad habitat for them. Yeah, but it just depends what you're used to. It's like my mum used to do night duty as a nurse. Yeah. but she did that for about 20 years, and then she just changed, and she just changed, and now she just sleeps at night, because she used to sleep during the day and work at night like Kiwis. Now she sleeps at night, and she's retired, does nothing in the day. Happy birthday, actually, by the way, Mum, today. Yeah, so it's just what you're used to.

46:26So I think the only reason the Kiwis do that is because they're trying to stay away from predators during the day, but that's not going to be an issue on my farm. Yeah, yeah. You're so far. And it's the only slight difference between, you know, like you're talking about shift work there, I mean, these lights are on 24-7 though, aren't they? Oh, yeah. So they don't have a concept of night or day. So the lights are on all the time and there's no foliage. Go, go, go all the time. It's like summer in Alaska. Yeah. Yeah. It's just forever. Yeah, so I think it's a little money spinner and plus I'm doing my bit for the environment.

46:56Yeah, totally, mate, totally. He's such an environmentalist, old mogey, isn't he? I know, and I really wish he'd get back into his animal work because he's always so passionate about animals. Yeah. And you wouldn't think it to look at him because he comes across as quite a hard bastard. Yeah. But deep inside, deep, deep, deep, deep inside Mogi, there's a real soft heart. Have you found that? Not really, actually, to be honest. Haven't gone far enough. True. Here's the cast. The Hauraki Big Show Podcast. Pool jam there on the radio. Hauraki Big Show this Wednesday evening. Now, listen up. This is very important.

47:32This is breaking news, actually. What, is it? It is. I think it's worthy of breaking news, Pugsun. This is breaking news. Did a douche. Oh, that's right. Oh, come on, man. Sorry, I was concentrating on what I was about to say. I'm breaking the news. We've been running a competition, the Wild West Coast Trip, which is worth about$5 ,000. Now, I believe that ends tomorrow. Yeah, so the entries will close tomorrow night, I think. So it's your last couple of days to get yourself in the draw. Yes. And it's going to be an absolutely massive weekend if you win. You get five grand to play with. go down to the West Coast, one of the most underrated parts of New Zealand.

48:07Seriously, man, I've only been down there a couple of times. I genuinely love it. I could see myself, you know, a few years from now, maybe going down to the West Coast, getting myself a nice little villa with my wife there and doing my own little radio show. Just on the coast there with your fishing line hanging out the studio window. Seriously, man, that would be my dream. But as Pugsan said, some amazing prizes. You could go heli fishing, you can go heli hunting, You can get your own knife forged, which is kind of weird. But, I mean, if you're into that sort of thing, why not? I would be massively into that because it's real backbone country, you know what I mean, which is, I think, why we're specifying that.

48:43Also, if that's not your thing and you want to just take it easy and relax, you could do a wellness retreat. I've been doing some yoga lately, Hoardy J. Just on the weekends. On the weekends and stuff. Jase. Jase, I've been, yeah. And so I can recommend that kind of thing. It's great for your mental health and, you know, just keeping yourself limber, eh, Jase? I'm just envisaging Pug San and the downward dog. Oh, yeah. It's making me feel slightly nauseous, actually. Oh, I hit the downward dog, man. But do get involved. Say that again, Pug San. What do they need to do? If you want to get involved, it's your last two days to text the word WILD to 3483.

49:18And that's, of course, all thanks to the Backbones at Monteith's Born of the Wild. They're the guys behind Bear Empire July 2025 here at Hauraki. Get into it. The Hauraki Big Show with Jason Hoyt, Mike Minogue and Keezy.

49:41Well, there you go, you mad bastards. That's the show done and dusted for this Wednesday night. We got through the hump. Been an interesting show, Pugshawn. Are you sweet, man? Are you joking over there or something? I've just got, I'm feeling a bit bilious. You're feeling a bit what? Bilious. What does that mean? Kind of heart-burn-y. Aw. Yeah, that's okay. Hey, but it's been an interesting show. Now, I wouldn't have the vaguest idea what we talked about on the podcast outro today. Not the vaguest idea. If I recall correctly, there was some more Vietnam chat. I was asking you for some advice on that.

50:15Oh, yes. There was also some pizza chat in there. Oh, yeah. And this clip here is entitled Pizza Party, regarding our trip to Christchurch a little while ago. Get him! Get him! Get him! when we went down to Christchurch of late for our last gig. Prebleton. Prebleton. And I was really looking forward to the fellas having another pizza party in Pugsans' room or my room. Yeah. And you guys ditched me, man. I had my jammies on. Yeah, yeah. I was ready to order the pizzas. Sure. And you reprobates didn't get back till like three or four in the morning. Yeah, you were shocking that morning too. In the morning?

50:54I was peering through my curtain when you arrived home at 3am. You just piled in through. You didn't even shut your front door, you animal. That's a true story. For the first time ever I woke up and my front door was just wide open in my hotel room. Just had all my stuff in there, you know, and I was like, jeez, this hotel's poorly insulated. I was freezing my balls off. Hey, no, listen, do us a favour and check out the podcast. Also check out the Instagram account. Pardon? We'll be back same time, same place tomorrow. till then. See you later.
