In short
“Aging Gracefully” outro on The Hauraki Big Show, focusing on minor injuries, exercise choices, and quality-of-life thoughts about living longer.
Guests
No guest interview; only hosts/regulars (Backbone, Jase, Keezy, Mogi, TZ) banter.
Guest backgrounds
Not provided beyond their roles as co-hosts on Radio Hauraki.
Key claims
Aging shows up as random aches/bruises (hip pain, “mallet finger” history, purple finger bruise) and people should address issues rather than “pack it up.” Jase suggests Pilates for hip issues, while others argue for medical advice and a proper exercise regime.
Notable examples
Jase’s bruised/purple index finger; a prior mallet finger requiring a splint; hip strain/pain while walking and in a meeting; discussion of living to 100 and wives’ differing views; dumpling routine at Commercial Bay and walking/step counts.

0:15Keyzie:G'day fellas. Backbone. Hi. It's a pretty standy start from us. I like that. Um, I should warn you, I've got a throbbing headache. It's throbbing. Why are you warning me? Because I might just be quite quiet today. Oh, yeah. I might just sort of hand over the burden of chat to the fellas. You were quite chatty today until you smashed that glass and that tea mug in the kitchen. Yeah, that was weird, wasn't it? You're all happy as until. I tried to stop it with my foot, and now my foot really hurts. But here's the thing. And your hip sore. But your backbone. This was the really weird thing. So I was walking to work today.
0:52Mike Minogue:Your hip sore as well, right? Your hips don't lie.
0:55Keyzie:Got like really, a really sharp pain in my hip and I had to stop because it was like, oh, fuck, what was that? And then carried on walking and then did it again. And it's like, what's going on? I mean, I powered through. I'm a backbone. I kept walking, but shit, it hurt. I was in a meeting today and I strained it. Look, not to undermine what's happened to you, Jase, it's a tragedy. Bloody serious stuff, man. I think we're all feeling it.
1:24Mike Minogue:Yeah. And something just went in my finger. Oh, jeez, it's purple. This little purple bastard there. And I was just sitting there and I said to the guys, look at that. Is that what's happened there? I said, don't know, just sitting here. Yes. And we agreed that that's old age for you.
1:40Keyzie:I wonder if it's - That's what happens to your body. Did it hurt? It's not the thing I had with the, what's it called, hammer finger? That's right, your finger. What was that called? Mallet. A mallet finger. Yeah, yeah. where I just bumped it so lightly and then it just bent down and I couldn't fucking straighten it. And my daughter would bring it up periodically. Yes. And just out of the blue, man, be like nine months and she'd go, it's funny how Jase's finger does. It was the weirdest thing. I thought I'd had some kind of mini stroke or something. It was odd.
2:14Mike Minogue:That is weird though. It is.
2:16Keyzie:Had to be in a splint and everything. Look at it now. It's still weird. But you can see why people want to diet at the end of life, can't you? Yes. If you're just going to have that stuff happening, that's as good as it's going to get, Keezy. Just a little bit on your index finger. A little bit of a bruise on my finger there. Yeah. You can see how you're like, oh, fuck it. Let's just pack it up. Let's just call it a day, shall we?
2:35Mike Minogue:There is back paddock and just pack it up, but there's also doing something about certain things. Oh, certainly, surely. So, for example, if you come in every day and say your hip is sore. Yeah.
2:45Keyzie:I don't do it every day, Keezy.
2:47Mike Minogue:Then go and do Pilates or something. It's what I would do if I was Jase.
2:52Keyzie:Pilates? 100%. Good God.
2:55Mike Minogue:See, it's this old-fashioned attitude. It is. Shocking.
2:59Keyzie:When I got my mallet finger, I got that scene to. I got a splint. How long did it take you? About four days because we had to go away at that time, remember? Where did we go? We were down in the mount, I think, doing the black clash or something.
3:13Mike Minogue:Oh, yeah.
3:13Keyzie:So I couldn't do it then, but it was weird.
3:16Mike Minogue:I bet you're within walking distance of a Pilates studio.
3:20Keyzie:No, I don't think Pilates is the answer, Keezy.
3:22Mike Minogue:So hang on, so you'll do chair yoga?
3:25Keyzie:Well, no, you won't. You'll pay for it. I'll pay for it. You won't do it. Why don't you think Pilates is the answer? My wife does Pilates. So does mine? I don't know. I just... You don't want to look? I'll walk it out. The smart thing to do would be probably some kind of a medical practitioner, given your age. Yeah, yeah. He's not young anymore, Keezy. He's not just going to Pilates it out. He needs medical advice. And then he can get into a solid exercise regime, which I don't think you've been in for a while.
3:53Mike Minogue:Does he ever get medical advice?
3:55Keyzie:No, but that's what I'm saying. I am as fit as I've ever been at the moment. There you go. But the issue is, yeah, I do have hip issues, and I should probably book in my hip replacement now.
4:07Mike Minogue:Yeah, that's the thing.
4:07Keyzie:So by the time it rolls by, I'll be ready to go.
4:11Mike Minogue:He would rather book in a hip replacement than go see someone who could just maybe like fix the way, you know.
4:18Keyzie:But interestingly, in terms of back paddock, I said to my wife the other night, would you like to live to 100? And she was like, fuck no. And I was like, oh, really? And she said, no, I don't want to live that long. It's hard to say. Because when you get to that age where it's just like, you know, where you're just kind of waiting to die. Well, it's a weird, everybody always frames it that way, right? how old do you want to be but it's completely it directly relates to your quality of life so I want to live as long as my quality of life has got and then after that I'll just die thanks yeah
4:52Mike Minogue:well Jase man for you it's time back paddock
4:54Keyzie:and like my wife I reckon is going to live to 100 she's fit as she is fit as she looks after herself she does what did you do for her birthday spent some we couldn't actually do much because she had a rehearsal Oh.
5:13Mike Minogue:That's weird because I saw her out for dinner with a guy.
5:16Keyzie:Did you?
5:17Mike Minogue:Let's start a yarn on the show. His wife's having an affair. That's funny.
5:21Keyzie:Yeah, that would be. With Wayne Brown. That's been done, I'm afraid. Has it? Terry.
5:28Mike Minogue:Oh, yeah, true, true.
5:30Keyzie:But no. The Hauraki Big Show. Weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast. But we're going to go out for dinner again tonight. Again? Well, we go out for dinner all the time now. I got dumplings last night. When's the last time you wrote her a poem? Are you still deep in your poetry or have you given it away now? Oh, I haven't specifically written her one for ages.
5:55Mike Minogue:Can you write me a poem? You need to be inspired to write poetry, Jase. But she features in my poems. What, sort of standing over your shoulder?
6:03Keyzie:No, just in a sort of romantic way. A notion. Way. All right?
6:11Mike Minogue:Why did you just look up at my hair? I don't know. You just looked up at my hair and then laughed.
6:16Keyzie:Well, it's just a bit boofy at the moment. You're a bit boofy. That's a good idea, Mogi. I will. No, TZ, I won't write you a poem.
6:25Mike Minogue:I just don't believe that you can write poems.
6:27Keyzie:Okay. Oh, we haven't seen one yet, have we?

6:28Mike Minogue:No, never. And it's all like, yeah, I was typing away. I used to write poems, blah, blah, blah. I was like, well, just write. Can you write me a poem? Find me in the club. Bottle full of bub. God. If you're into taking X. Didn't you read that as a poem on the show once? What? Into Club by 50 Set.
6:45Keyzie:Probably. I don't know, man. I can't remember the shit we do on this show. Yeah. But you guys can feel free to chat. I mean, I started off this podcast going, listen, I've got a headache. And here you are. I can't fucking shut you up as usual. You can't shut me the fuck up. Come on, man. As usual. How was your day? Yeah, I do. I have a fucking pounder. Leading question here for you.
7:08Mike Minogue:Yeah, yeah. Nah, from Jase. How was my day? Great, I love Wednesdays Dumpling day Oh, is that why you look forward to it? Yeah I'm quite glad that the All Black Coach has been announced Because I'm sitting there today thinking Wednesday's miles away from anything, isn't it? Wednesday's my favourite day because You get dumplings I do my gaming podcast, Extremely Casual Gamers That's so good, man Very, very, very funny episode today actually And then I walk to the office, which is a nice little 15 minute jaunt And I stop and get dumplings Yeah, boy At Commercial Bay. At Commercial Bay. And while I've ordered the dumplings, I'm sitting there with my buzzer, and I write the bio and the title of the episode of my podcast.
7:48Mike Minogue:Yeah, good shit. You got your little thing, man. That's good. That's good. It's good down there, eh? That part of the city is cool, man. It's mean. I'm so stoked that we've moved. What is Commercial Bay specifically? I feel like I'm part of Auckland. It's the big building that's down there, which has got all the – it's a shopping centre.
8:03Keyzie:Downtown? So, yeah, it's opposite the ferry terminal. Is there one of those – is there an Eden Noodles there? Yeah, on the third one. Fucking hell, they're everywhere. They really are. They're just up there five minutes from my place. I'm keen to go to the original.
8:17Mike Minogue:Yes. So am I. I've never been. I've never been. But if anyone's ever listened to us banging on about dumplings, I've never been, no. But if anyone has ever heard us banging on about dumplings and noodles, it's always Eden noodles in Auckland. But we never plug it because we re-burger, remember?
8:32Keyzie:And Keezy bought 20 in today. Would he give Hoodie J one? No.
8:38Mike Minogue:No. If I had 100, I probably wouldn't. You'd be full, Jase, if you had one. And you've got a headache, man.
8:43Keyzie:I had 15 of the bastards last night, mate. Plus. Is that right, mate? 15. Old big deco, man. And I tell you what, because they give you an order. You dominated those dumplings, bro. And I got my 15 dumplings, and it had two sets of chopsticks, and I was like, well, I've only been eating one of those bastards. I ain't sharing these with anyone. But then you got home and got your fork out. Yeah, I was going to say.
9:06Mike Minogue:He was pointing to the forks. Did you eat all 15 of them? Yes, I did. Far out. Real easy, too. I'm worried about your weight, man.
9:14Keyzie:Mate, I've lost weight. Again, I want you to feel my buzies, because they're tightening up every day. I've never seen an issue with your buzies to begin with, so I'm not going to start fucking fiddling with them. I'd have to fiddle with them every day. That said, you've got a shit phone, don't you? So you don't know how many steps you're doing a day. Yes, I know exactly what I did. I did 14 ,000 yesterday. Right, that's good, isn't it? Yep.
9:37Mike Minogue:Right.
9:38Keyzie:Which is about... 300 metres for you. 11 or 12K.
9:42Mike Minogue:Which is here to work, yeah.
9:44Keyzie:Guys, 11 or 12K. What are you doing, though? I'm literally... It feels like you're tailing someone. I'm just going everywhere. I'm going everywhere. I'm checking everything. Are you really? Yes, I am. I am. I love it. I put my headphones on and I just walk and walk and walk.
10:00Mike Minogue:Have you been just down here? No, not really down this area. Do you stop off for a food every day? What do you do? Yes, I have food.
10:05Keyzie:Yep. But this is the other thing. It's pretty good. Is that, you know, a lot of the time I don't even have my phone with me. Yeah. So it's probably more than that. What are you listening to on your headphones then if you've got no phone with you? I'm on a really – You've got great Bluetooth.
10:22Mike Minogue:Nothing.
10:22Keyzie:I've got –
10:23Mike Minogue:They're just on. Air muffs.
10:26Keyzie:I'm on a really good run with the music at the moment. I've stumbled upon this, what would you call it, a playlist, and I fucking love it. What's it called? It's not, it's just like, nah. It's good shit.
10:38Mike Minogue:Whoa. It's called good shit. On YouTube too. Shocking bastard.
10:43Keyzie:That is terrible. But it's good, you know, because you just pound it out, fellas. And that's when you've got your phone with you, though, eh? Yes. Yeah. But you'd kind of want to hear. I like the sounds of the city, though. Same. But I don't like getting talked to. No. That's probably the big thing for you. I like just staring at people as I'm walking. With your shades on? No, just not staring. That's wrong. Just people watching. Just people watching, yes.
11:09Mike Minogue:I like observing. Do you have your sunnies on, though? Mm-mm. No sunnies? Mm. You're fucking off your head, man. You're wasted, man. What are you doing? No sunnies. You're not a big sunny guy, though, actually. No, not really.
11:19Keyzie:I haven't seen any sunnies on you for a long time. No. I do like sunnies. I've got about three pairs of the bastards.
11:26Mike Minogue:I only wear them if I'm on the piss outside for quite a while. Well, you went through a period you were never wearing them at all. I never do, still. because I'm staring at computer screens inside, so I like to see natural light outside.
11:36Keyzie:Yeah, you are looking quite pale, actually. Yeah, that's what we were getting at.
11:40Mike Minogue:Yeah, yeah. No, I'm not. What do you mean?
11:43Keyzie:Yeah, not good. It's kind of a yellow-brown. He's got his Fonzie look again today, hasn't he? Hey!
11:50Mike Minogue:Hey, thanks for listening. 4 to 7 weekdays, Radio Horaki.
