In short
This “OUTRO: Bag ’O Connies” episode is a casual wrap-up chat from The Hauraki Big Show about travel planning—especially packing light for Vietnam and New Year—plus upcoming show scheduling. Guests aren’t formal interviewees; it’s a host-and-cohost banter featuring “Keezy,” “Mogi,” and “Jase” (referred to as “Hoody J”). Backgrounds: radio presenters/colleagues at Hauraki; Jase is also a golfer.
Key claims
Vietnam weather varies—north can be ~16°C, so bring a skivvy; carry-on is feasible for weeks if you pack essentials; don’t lug a giant suitcase—use a backpack (PlayStation-style) or convertible bags.
Notable examples
Ha Long Bay and the Ha Giang loop; a tent loan that got ripped; Jase’s “jizz soup” Instagram story and his golf form.

0:15Mike Minogue:Hello. Hello. Hey guys. Wednesday. Oh man. Certainly is. The hump. Two sleeps. This week is going fast. Two sleeps. Fucking flying by. Is it going flask for you?
0:26Jason Hoyte:It's flasting by for me. Is it? I literally, nah, I reckon I have like one day a week where I feel like I'm chasing my tail the whole day. It's today. Yeah, boy. Just one. One, maybe max two, where I just feel like I'm like trying to catch up. Who's someone on your ass, man? Always, man. Do you need me and Mogi to have a word with someone? Up my ass. Nah, nah, nah. I had like a, I mean, that interview, that debacle today kind of threw me a little bit.
0:51Mike Minogue:Tom Sainsbury coming in early.
0:53Jason Hoyte:I was literally like working out all the details, but it was a hell of my own making, working out all the details. and then I had somebody ask me a question in the Hauraki office and I was like, oh, sorry, just give me one second. I'll just look at this because my brain is like going, not you, Dilly, somebody else. And then I had three other people proceed to then also ask me a question. So that was you, Dilly. Right after I said, oh, sorry, just give me a second. I'm just, and I'm like on my phone like this trying to work, but obviously it just looks like I'm farting around like social media.
1:21Jason Hoyte:I think that happens a lot in this line of work.
1:23Mike Minogue:I heard the question they were trying to ask you was, why are your pants not on? Because your koozer was hanging out Koozer
1:36Jason Hoyte:Mogey Anyway, so yeah I think in this job If you're on our phone It doesn't look like you're working at all But I'm fully like messaging someone At the same time I'm messaging someone else Trying to work out the timing It's all good though, man It's all good We got there in the end, man
1:52Mike Minogue:Great interview in the end It's going to play out later in the show Did you get two out of it? Two breaks? It was an eight minute interview How good
1:59Jason Hoyte:I have a question that is literally just pertaining to me right now Vietnam for three weeks Do you think I could do carry on?
2:09Mike Minogue:Carry on
2:10Jason Hoyte:Is this a cheap scale? Carry on only No, no I'm just thinking like my partner and I are going Where are you going? Looking at March And I'm fucking excited I've left a lot of it so late In terms of just like actually looking at shit but now we're actually looking at shit. Now I'm actually excited.
2:30Mike Minogue:The issue you've got with Vietnam, it's not an issue, it's just something you'll have to plan for, is down south is very, very hot and up north isn't actually as hot as you'd think. So if you're going up to like fucking Ha Long Bay and stuff and north of there, you will need a skivvy. Oh, okay. Like potentially, it can be like 16 degrees or something. What time of year were you there? Because it's up in the mountains. No, I haven't been there but I did a lot of research and was about to go. We're also looking at doing like the Ha Yang.
2:55Jason Hoyte:The Ha Yang. Ha-Jang Loop. Yeah, that, which would be up in the mountains as well. Yeah. That'll be cold. Instead of rain. I mean, in my head, when I first think about it, I'm like, yeah, I can do it. I reckon I can hack. Like, I take my little PlayStation backpack there, you know, stuff everything really tight, couple of tees. I only need one pair of shorts. I only need one pair of longs. And then, like, a rain jacket. I think it wouldn't hurt you to have two pairs of shorts. I only own two pairs of shorts. Is that right? Do you? I've literally got these ones I'm wearing now and then my Patagonia swim ones.
3:29Mike Minogue:Will you save your check-in for just Connie's?
3:35Jason Hoyte:I would laugh at that if I hadn't just said that I just want to do carry-on.
3:40Mike Minogue:Yeah, just so that you can just free up your check-in just for Connie's.
3:46Mike Minogue:So do you guys think I could - Because you can probably get them over there. The Hauraki Beach Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show Podcast.
3:58Jason Hoyte:This is the other thing to consider, Casey, is shopping. Like, I'm pretty keen to get a few things while moving. Not, like, go crazy, but...
4:05Mike Minogue:Well, you would have taken a few garments, a couple of SUVs. Check on the way back, you can pick up a... yeah. Check in on the way back. Yeah, okay. So you're lugging it around. Yeah. Plus, you would have blown through most of your connies by then, so you could just chuck it in there. This is why I don't bring any content, all right?
4:21Jason Hoyte:Because this is what comes of it to the podcast. I'm sitting in Jase's chair.
4:24Mike Minogue:I'm going to do a Jase impression. It's quite fun. I can see why he does it. For your Connie's pugs. Because you'll be trying to do something, aka Keezy, we're sitting over there trying to do something, and then you just sit here and just go, oh, is that for your Connie's? And then you just sit there with a stupid grin on your face. I quite like it.
4:36Jason Hoyte:I was messaging Jase last night about a soup that he put in his story. I was like, can you tag the Holicky Big Show Instagram account in this next time, please, if people want to see this gold. He wouldn't know how to do it. It sounded like I was taking the piss, but I mean, I kind of was, but I was also serious. It looked really good.
4:54Jason Hoyte:see what he just bought making some jizz soup. You know? Best toasties in the world. Yeah. They look fucking good. A number one. They look really good.
5:01Mike Minogue:I messaged, I replied to it because it was on Instagram story and I was like, fuck, really making the most of your holiday, Jase. Way to go, man. Yeah. And then he, I was just joking. And then he goes, yeah, well, Keezy, I'm kind of waiting for my wife and my daughter to also be on holiday. So there's not a lot. I was just like, no, I'm just joking, man. That's great. So he's really relaxed. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then I played golf with him today, actually. Oh, true. He was fucking relaxed. He's shot the best he's shot in a long time. Like the best he's shot since he first started playing with me.
5:27Mike Minogue:Yeah. Load off his mind, man. He knows what he's doing next year. He's got no worries. He's got Christmas coming up. Really affects his golf. All that stuff, old hoody Jay. Yeah, but he still smashes you. What do you mean? In golf. Nah, to be honest, most of the time we're about the same. Oh, really? Yeah. Wouldn't he say the same thing? Today he smashed me. Certainly not the story he tells when he comes in here. Yeah. It's like, oh, Keezy. The funny thing with Jase is, nah, he'll probably beat me, I reckon, by about two shots on average. Yeah. So we're right around the same. We're both shit. But today he was just on one.
5:59Mike Minogue:He was just so chill, man. On one. It was so good. Hoody J. I like seeing Hoody J nailing it. Still fucking effing and jeffing even though he smoked me about it. He's like, I've got a fucking double bogey there, Keezy. I'm like, cool, man. I've got an eight. So if you could shove that up your ass, it would be good. Well, I'm looking forward to Friday, Pokesan, I've got to say.
6:18Jason Hoyte:Yeah, me too. It'll be a bloody slog, but you know what, man? It's a fun new way to do it. No one's ever heard the big show like this before. That's true, actually. Or breakfast, definitely. Have you done it with Horty Jizz before? Jason and I did the weeks you guys were away. While you were in Europe. Oh, of course. While you were in Europe, yeah. Spam boy in the jizz. That's right. And then obviously Keezy and I have had a slew of one-offs, which have been great. Oh, I think we've done a week, actually. Yeah, you would have done a week. Just chipping in, helping out.
6:46Mike Minogue:Sounds like we're doing the first week of Back, which I believe is the 12th of Jan or something. Yeah, it is the 12th of Jan. And the first big show is that Friday, which is the 16th. Yeah, which is the Black Clash. You and I are doing Monday to Thursday on Brekkie.
6:58Jason Hoyte:On Brekkie, baby. Yeah. That'll be fun. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It'll be cool to try some stuff out.
7:02Mike Minogue:What, are you going to test some stuff out? Yeah, man. Get a little experiment. Oh, just my Connie joke. My Connie's. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
7:07Jason Hoyte:That's how you do it, man. You know there's colonies in my carry-on from Vietnam, right? Colonies. Please do take colonies to Vietnam. See, the issue is the other party that we're going to Vietnam with, two of my best mates, we just asked, oh, we'd probably just go carry on, right, like, you know, for the three weeks. And then the lady in that pair was like, absolutely not for three weeks. And then Amelia, well, my partner, is like, oh, but we were just going to do carry on because we were walking around a lot all day, traveling from place to place every few days. And then now because this person has said that, now she's like, oh, maybe we should get carry on.
7:43Jason Hoyte:And I'm like, no, if you think we can do carry-on, we can do it. Of course you can do it. Yeah, 100%. You just need your essentials, you know. Yeah. Maybe just like an extra bag to whack a couple of things. Well, what did I do? I did two weeks in Europe with carry-on. With just carry-on? My wife did a month with carry-on in Europe. Yeah, see, that's, yeah. Well, then we can definitely do it. You know what I mean?
8:07Mike Minogue:Yeah. Is it like an ease of getting around thing and a cost of internal flights and stuff, adding bags?
8:12Jason Hoyte:Yeah.
8:13Mike Minogue:Yeah.
8:13Jason Hoyte:Yeah, well, that's how I see it. And also, I just feel like I don't want to be lugging around. I mean, I remember Japan. If you get it, then you're going to fill it up, and you don't need it. Nah. You might as well. When I was in Japan, we did not have carry-on, obviously. We were there for maybe only – we were there for 13 days. And obviously, Japan's different, you know what I mean? It's a lot less like – you're a lot less inclined to just go the same shorts and tee than you probably are in Vietnam. But, jeez, lugging that bad boy around every few days from city to city in Japan, even in Japan, which is the most efficient public transport.
8:44Mike Minogue:What you've got to do is somewhere between a backpack from PlayStation and a giant suitcase. Well, the backpack from PlayStation is pretty good, man. I mean, it's not really. It's very roomy. It's fine. I mean, it's fine. This fucking guy doesn't even use a PlayStation backpack. Yeah, but I've got one. I've got the same bag. He knows if it's any good. He uses it. No, no, but I've got the same bag, and you're going to, like, look, what you're saying is I don't want to be lugging. He's fixing a problem that doesn't exist. Just leave him to it. It's also a big backpack. It's like I don't want to lug around a giant suitcase is what you're saying.
9:13Mike Minogue:So I'm going to take my PlayStation backpack. Which is carry-on. Which is carry-on. Which is carry-on. But there is also like a world where there's a bag in between the two, between giant suitcase that's hard to lug around.
9:25Jason Hoyte:But you'd want a backpack, wouldn't you?

9:26Mike Minogue:Yeah, you can get bags that double as you can tow them around. We've got them and then they turn into backpacks. That's what we travel around with. Can you send me that? The bag. Yeah, which is what kind of bag it is. Sure, I can show you that. You know what I mean, man?
9:39Jason Hoyte:Yeah, sure. I was going to ask, do either of you have a tent just while we're here? Yes, I do have a tent. I was hoping to have one for Christmas, but I don't have one. I do have a tent. Do you loan out your tent?
9:51Mike Minogue:I do not.
9:52Jason Hoyte:Yeah, I didn't think so.
9:52Mike Minogue:Because we've loaned out our last tent and it got ripped.
9:55Jason Hoyte:Who bloody ripped it?
9:56Mike Minogue:And then it was fucking awkward because they were like, oh, we'll buy you a new tent. I'm like, cool, it was$1 ,000. And then they just kind of did it and I was just like, I'm not going to get out anymore.
10:04Jason Hoyte:Oh, yeah. That wasn't to me though, eh?
10:07Mike Minogue:No. Tents are cheap though. It depends what you're after. How long are you? Where are you taking it? Vietnam. Vietnam, I've got to put it.
10:13Jason Hoyte:Are you going to check it in? So it's got to fit in a PlayStation backpack with all my Connies and stuff. It's going to be a hell of a trip. No, that's just for New Year's, dude. That's just like a few days. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But like we're looking at camping maybe at a mate's batch, but also it's just my partner and I.
10:30Mike Minogue:Literally$100 will get you what you're after.
10:32Jason Hoyte:Yeah, yeah, we're looking at that. I mean, we have a tent at the moment, but it's pretty tight.
10:36Mike Minogue:Yeah, right.
10:37Jason Hoyte:I'm not the most tent-efficient guy. Toit, toit. You need some room to roam around. How many Connies are you taking? Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I need it to fit my giant suitcase. Oh! My check-in suitcase with my Connies. This is New Year's chat. Because you're going up north for New Year's, eh? I am. I'm going to Maracana. That's where that new Rhythm and Connies festival is. Rhythm and Connies. Yeah, Dan from the Black Seeds, he's going to be there.
11:00Mike Minogue:Oh, yeah? Yeah. He loves his Connies. Yeah. Hey, listen to the big show, 4 to 7 weekdays on Radio Hodaki, man. It's so good. Thanks for the advice, guys. It's good stuff, man. Thank you.
