In short

The hosts chat about studio revamp, dinner and salad, then a “beef stir fry” debate—especially whether they’re getting sick of steak—before moving to plans for the New Zealand Screen Awards and a recommendation to watch a short film.

Guest backgrounds

No guests appear; it’s just the regular hosts (Jase and Mogi) on The Big Show/Radio Hauraki.

Key claims

Steak is becoming unappealing for them (they prefer chicken/pork mince); stir fries feel “broke” rather than “rich”; Screen Awards are expensive but offer table discounts; the short film “Beautiful” is worth watching.

Notable examples

Steak salad with beetroot, walnut, blue cheese, pine nuts, and pickled red onion; black bean beef stir fry with rice/wine; “Beautiful” (2000/2001) black comedy about Kiwi blokes Barry and Kev whose views on domestic violence/sexuality clash; quote about getting “more action down at the rugby club.”

0:00Do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do. For all you mad bastards loving The Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok or Raw Dog It. 4 to 7 every weekday on Radio Horeke. G'day fellas there. What are you doing stealing my pen? Well, I'm just going to write a note because I don't want to forget this is potentially good content. See what you think about this fellas. I walked to work today. Yes. That's it. Oh. Mogi. Hmm.

0:30Mike Minogue:I reckon we could do that pretty deep in the six o 'clock hour. Yeah, maybe.

0:35Keyzie:It's really annoying me and it's still bugging me today. I had a great idea during the show yesterday and I went, Jesus, I've got to write that down. That's great. And then it's just gone right out of my brain. I got distracted by something else and I'll be fucked if I can remember what it is. She'll be right, mate.

0:52Mike Minogue:For the listeners as well, we're in a different studio today. Our Horaki studio is getting revamped. So if there are any technical issues, that's why. Yeah, man. Revamped studio. Very exciting.

1:03Keyzie:Heated chairs, I hear. Fellas. Heated chairs. Oh, really? I doubt it. Yep. Bidet. Heated rearview mirrors. Eight TVs. Cruise control. Cruise control. Cruise control. Nice. A little chilly bin in there and that. Looking forward to it. A couple of bare fridges. Nice. So it'll be good. Good night, fellas. What happened last night, Jase? I did have a good night last night. Good yarns with the missus. What did we watch? We watched something, had a delicious dinner. Steak, which I don't often eat. Yes. With a beetroot, walnut, blue cheese, pine nut. Salad? Salad. Did she make it? She made it. I think I've had this salad.

1:46Oh, you've had this salad, definitely. But also had pickled red onion in it. Yeah. Pickled red onion, man. Does she have a book about salad?

1:52Mike Minogue:Is that where she got it from? No, it's a pretty traditional. Well known. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But does she have books about salad? fucking oath she does. Yeah, because my wife's got a few books about salads. She's got a few bestsellers. And like a year ago, we started being salad, and they're delicious, and like we should eat more salads. But it's not just lettuce and some tomato. No. It's like all sorts of fancy shit. It was really good, and we were saying, God, it's good to have some salads.

2:15Keyzie:Absolutely. Salad weather. And one of my daughters, who's a real foodie and loves cooking, we've got all her cookbooks. So we've got about 20 cookbooks that we never use just in our bookcase going. It's like, what are we going to do with those fucking things?

2:33Mike Minogue:Because all you need is the Edmonds cookbook, eh?

2:35Keyzie:Pretty much. Well, I don't use recipes. I just go off instinct. As does my wife. Sadly. Some people's instincts are better than others. Yeah, well, that's right. Grab hand. Yeah, alright. You don't need to convince us, man. She's a good cook. She's a solid... You're saying she's better in the dishes department. Is that true? If she heard this right now, Mogi... She'd love it. She'd be fussy caps. She knows, man. She knows. She'd be raining down the blows on your noggin. Hey, you guys going to the screen awards on Friday?

3:06Mike Minogue:Before we change it off to food, last night my wife made a joke. Well, not a joke. She said something about me which I found very offensive, which you guys would love. Yeah, great. Let's go. Because I made this. Is this on your chair? She started. Nah, probably not. Oh, maybe. She started making dinner and then I finished it off while she went to squash. And it was like this beef stir fry with steak. Oh, yeah, that's right. The steak was nice and tender and blah, blah, blah, blah. followed the recipe perfectly, and then I ate like half of it, and then she's like, oh, you know, eating the rest of it.

3:33Mike Minogue:And I was like, oh, I'm just over steak. I just don't like steak anymore. Right. She's like, fucking hell, man. All you eat is chicken and pork mince. And I was like, that is not true. I was like, you are full of shit. She's believing all the marketing.

3:48Keyzie:She's bought into the hype, fellas.

3:50Mike Minogue:Over steak. Yeah, can it happen, though? It's just, I don't know, like if it's got an amazing sauce on it, but the taste of it in itself, I think I'm just sick of it. Yeah. Yes. Whereas chicken, like, fucking.

3:58Keyzie:I probably have it once a month, if that, actually. Yeah, same here, but still. I've never been a big steak man, ever. And funnily enough, my wife. You think you don't like steak? Literally two days ago, I was going, I want to go out. I want to go out and get a really big steak. And I was like, really? Are you kidding me? Yeah.

4:16Mike Minogue:What did you get?

4:17Keyzie:No, see, we haven't done it yet.

4:19Mike Minogue:Oh, right.

4:19Keyzie:She said, we need to go out so I can buy a big steak.

4:22Mike Minogue:Well, like, when we were in Paris, Jase, which is in Europe. Is it? We went to a really high-rated classic French bistro, and one of the things the French do is a steak with chips with this amazing sauce on it. I can't remember what it's called. But I had some of it, and my wife was like, this is fucking amazing. And I ate some of it, and I was like, yeah, it's pretty good. It's still steak. I don't know. And so I just let her eat the whole thing. I was like, fuck it. I'm not that interested. It's weird. Your body knows, and that's the other thing. As you get older, Keezy, it's pretty young for a man of your age to be giving up on it.

4:55But yeah, people do move away from those meats.

4:59Mike Minogue:Yeah, right. I mean, like a steak sandwich with onions and heaps of seasoning and stuff, yes. But just the steak on its own. But then why am I eating steak? Exactly. It's a waste. Yeah. But chicken, on the other hand. Never done it for me.

5:11Keyzie:Neither of beef stir fries. It's like, no. No. But no stir fry. So the stir fry. No stir fry. Not chicken, nothing. The Hauraki Beef Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show Podcast.

5:29Mike Minogue:The stir fry we made last night was black bean beef with a very traditional recipe involving rice, wine, and all sorts of stuff. Yeah, maybe. And it was really nice if it wasn't rump steak.

5:38Keyzie:Having said that, Mogi, from our local Taiyo, we do get a chicken and cashew stir fry. That used to, that's the one I like if I'm going to get it, but it's still like... And it's fucking the bomb with basil. Yeah, it's delicious with oyster sauce and stuff in it. It's real good.

5:52Mike Minogue:It's fucking good, man.

5:52Keyzie:But generally as a stir fry, I go, stir fries make me think of when I was broke. Right, yeah.

5:58Mike Minogue:As opposed to rich on all your broken wood money. Yeah, now you're so rich that you don't even eat vegetables.

6:03Keyzie:That's right. I only eat meat. And crackers. And crackers. Crackles. Hey, fellas, are you guys going to the Screen Awards? No. I am.

6:12Mike Minogue:I hate those things. Why? Yeah, I hate them too. It'll be great. But at least it's a table, sitting down at a table. Is it? Is it? It is a sitting down at a table one. And they've got this good deal where it's$300 for one ticket. That's good. Or if you buy a table of$10, it's$3 ,000. So it's a good discount there. So I appreciated that. They even outlined it. They said it's$300 for one, or you can get a table for$3 ,000. Yeah, that's a good deal. So I can do the maths, motherfucker.

6:38Keyzie:Yeah. I was going through my head going, well, hang on. That's the same. That's exactly the same. We've got a couple of people nominated. Is the Screen Awards the TV Awards? It was the New Zealand Television Awards, but this year they're adding in film as well. Oh, that'll be an extra hour. Exactly. It's going to be an absolute punish. Sick, though. I don't know what to do about it. I don't know how they... Do you get wine and shit? Well, you do. But I can't drink at it because it's a work thing. Right. And I can't be getting fucking all leery.

7:12Mike Minogue:I reckon get wasted in the network. Get wasted in the network, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's what I'd do. Yeah. Because, Jase, you would have gone to a lot of those award-type things. Would you? I would bet you wouldn't have. Never. Yeah.

7:23Keyzie:Oh, I've been to one when my short film won. When you were nominated. Generally, if you're nominated, you go. Yeah. If you're not, you don't. And that was only because they asked me to. And you would have been like. They said, can you please come? And my brother directed it said, you should come. I think we should go. And I went. Steven Spielberg. Yeah.

7:39Mike Minogue:Steve. What was the name of the short film, just in case anyone wants to watch it? Beautiful. Is that on NZ on screen? You wouldn't know. The website. I think it is. I wouldn't have a clue, man, to be honest. I would not have a clue. Which is where you can watch a lot of that old New Zealand TV stuff.

7:53Keyzie:Old New Zealand gems. Old New Zealand iconic films. What's it called? Beautiful. Beautiful. How many E's? Beautiful. Is it on there, Moggy? I'm finding out, man. Just stand by. Just wait for it to load, man. Beautiful short film. Here we go. I'm going to reel out for you. It's on NZ On Screen, which is a magnificent resource for anyone out there. Got heaps of great stuff. You can, I'm assuming I can watch it here. I'm just going to give you the rundown, Jason, since you don't know. This was made 25 years ago. 24. Fuck. 2001. 2000. It would have been made in 2001, it says here, so it would have been made in 2000.

8:31This black comedy is shocking.

8:33Mike Minogue:Oh, man, racism. It sees Kiwi blokes Barry, played by Tim Gordon, and Kev, played by Jason Hoyt, set off into the sunrise for a day's fishing. The men alone glories of God's own in a runabout are disrupted. when they discover their attitudes towards domestic violence and sexuality are at odds.

8:54Keyzie:What? I'd watch that. What does that mean? If I had have read this before, I would have watched this fucking years ago. That is magnificent. And then stuck on a boat together in the middle of the ocean. Oh, that's great. How long was it?

9:10Mike Minogue:Like 15 minutes? Oh, I don't know. Director Adam Stevens adapted the story from a scene in Atrocities, A play written by Hoyt and Jonathan Brough. In 2001, Beautiful went to the New York, Melbourne and Montreal Film Festivals before screening at Sundance. It won Best Short Film at the 2003 New Zealand Film Awards. So this is the one where you got that trip to Bali? Yes. And then it was cancelled because of the Bali bombings? Yes. Oh my God, that was going to be your honeymoon? Yes. Now, would you like to hear a quote? Yes. Would you like to hear a quote? Okay, I'm just trying to find a running time.

9:44Here's a quote. This is from Kev, which is your character, Jase. Yes. I don't know why I bother coming out fishing with you, mate. I'll get more action down at the rugby club. At least they fucking shower together.

10:00Keyzie:Oh, man. So your character is keen for it? Yeah, I think I was, yeah. Oh, that is so good. He sort of brings it up, and the other guy's very anti. He's like, well, I mean, what's your fucking problem, man? Yeah, right. I mean, it's just two guys having a go at each other.

10:15Mike Minogue:Yeah, right. It doesn't give me the duration here, but the whole thing is on there. Oh, great. I am watching that, man. Yeah. We'll get a link up to that on the socials, and we'll probably have a chat about that. We've got to review it. Why don't we watch it tonight, and then we'll review it on tomorrow's show. Oh, how many buzzies? I'm excited about this. How many dongs out of five will I give it? Hey, listen to The Big Show, 4 to 7 weekdays on Radio Hauraki. Yeah, man. Good listening.
