In short
This episode is a comedic “outro” segment from The Hauraki Big Show, mostly banter about illness, home ventilation mishaps, and travel souvenirs. Topic: Backbone’s voice is messed up, blamed on a “hot kettle snozz” vacuum sucking dirt; a roof HRV/ventilation filter was brand new but the duct fan had fallen off for ~two years, so it was pulling unfiltered air.
Key claims
annual filter replacements cost about $300; natural ventilation via open sliders is better.
Notable examples
a tenant’s flat covered in poop; Pugs carries chopsticks for “poos inspection.”
Guests
no named guests; only hosts Backbone, Jase, Mogi, Pugs, and Keezy. Travel: Keezy allegedly bought Vietnamese “dillies” and sex toys on a “black dilly black market,” plus heavy chopsticks.

For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. Or Raw Doggett. 4 to 7 every weekday on Radio Hood Aircare. Oh, g'day fellas. Backbone.
0:21Mike Minogue:No mogi today, still sick. Sounds like he's got that thing he had a couple of years ago where his voice was fucked. Yes. Yeah. You know what it is?
0:30Keyzie:It's his snozz. Now, this is my theory, right? This is hot kettle snozz right now. Because he's got such a massive hunker. Yeah. Right? It's like a massive vacuum. And it's just sucking shit up there all the time. You know, just bits of dirt and filth. Do you think he needs a filter on there? Yeah, some sort of netting or miniature gauze. Yeah, gauze maybe. Yeah, medical gauze.
1:01Mike Minogue:Like a grate. Because today I was up in the roof of Casa Del Kese. It's what I call my granny flat in West Auckland. And I was replacing the filter on my HRV system. And it was about the size of one of Mogi's nostrils. It was about this big. Yeah. And so two of those. So like two foot. Like two of those up into each nostril. Sucking it up all the time, you know what I mean? Do you know what's funny as well? I got up into the roof to change the filter, and I went there, and there's this big ducting system of all these pipes going to all the different rooms, and it goes to a big fan and it sucks in air dry air from the roof.
1:37Mike Minogue:Yeah, I know how it works, man. I don't. Just for people that maybe don't know listening, I got there to change the filter, and I realised the filter thing's mounted up there ready to go, and the ducting tube fan thing had fallen off like maybe two years ago by the looks of it. So the filter was still brand new sitting there, and it's just been sucking in non-filtered air for about two years. Good stuff, man. And I was just like, who the fuck installed this? Well, also, so it was HRV? No, it wasn't HRV. Originally it was HRV. It was this other company.
2:06Keyzie:Right. Because we had a thing where they come every year and just replace, you know, clean the filter because they'll be fucked. Yeah, money. Yeah. Totally, man. A fuck tonne. It was like 300 bucks every time. Yeah, see. But, you know, I'd rather that happen than me try and do it.
2:23Mike Minogue:I wouldn't recommend you try and do it. No. I used to the front, Pugs. Bloody Nora. Having said that, it was very easy to do. Very easy to do. Oh, is she?
2:32Jason Hoyte:The key is to not have one of those and just have the good old natural air, the good old natural Mount Eden air, just pump it through your ranch sliders, fellas. Leave it open all the time. Good circulation.
2:43Keyzie:I was actually telling someone your story about your next-door neighbour that you had when you were a single fella. Oh. Yeah, yeah. And abandoning their little flat. That was fucked. Filled with poos and stuff. The shit-splosion, yeah, yeah. The shit-splosion.
2:59Jason Hoyte:Did you talk about that on the show? Yeah, I did, yeah. Yeah, okay, so not exaggerating. It was full of shit, right? 100%. There was literally poos wiped on the walls.
3:06Keyzie:And the person that I was telling about that story owned an apartment himself and had a very, very similar story.
3:14Jason Hoyte:Yeah, I think. Of a tenant gone bad. I think it was like a mental health thing and it was like depression gone fucking out of control, you know. That's what I gather from the landlord anyway.
3:24Mike Minogue:That's what you gathered from inspecting the poos and that.
3:27Jason Hoyte:Yeah, yeah, when I got right in there with a magnifying glass.
3:29Keyzie:Yeah, you got a little chopstick and we're just sort of sifting through. A chopstick? Just sifting through the poos.
3:33Jason Hoyte:Why would I use an eating utensil? That's disrespectful, man. Come on, man. I'd use a swab like a normal person, bro.
3:40Keyzie:You said that you wanted to get into it straight away just to sort of investigate and the nearest thing at hand was a chopstick. Yeah, because I carry chopsticks around with me all the time. I know you do. It is weird.
3:50Jason Hoyte:I don't know why you do that, man. What do you mean? In case I have to inspect poos on the walls.
3:54Mike Minogue:Have you noticed Pugs has that fanny pack full of chopsticks? Yes, I do. It's fucking, like, it's great. Like, when you're going to sushi or something, they're out of chopsticks. But most of the time it's pretty random.
4:04Jason Hoyte:Well, that's why I got you guys chopsticks. Yeah, I was going to say, my wife said to say thanks for that.
4:10Keyzie:Pug San bought us some chopsticks and a little spoon from Vietnam. No, my wife was very grateful. Can I just say? Your wife was. Yeah, she said. Can I just say, I loved it. I said, yeah, it's pretty fucking half-assed, but, you know, it's all G. Yeah, you should have gotten two pairs, eh? One for you and for your wife. Hang on.
4:26Mike Minogue:Why don't you bring us back from Vietnam? Excuse me, Keezy.
4:29Keyzie:A bucket load of great stories.
4:33Mike Minogue:I don't think he brought us back in.
4:35Jason Hoyte:You didn't bring one great story. The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast.
4:45Keyzie:Oh, you see, I'm... Oh, my daughter got sick.
4:48Mike Minogue:I'm not the kind of guy that goes to a different destination
4:54Keyzie:and spends his whole time going, because there are people like this, oh, what am I going to bring back for blah, blah, blah, blah. Fuck them, man. I'm on holiday. They can find their own shit.
5:08Jason Hoyte:You're just the type to complain with whatever you receive from people like that. Look, it takes 30 seconds, Jase. Just get us a little something. It's nice to be thought of.
5:16Keyzie:Buy us something, man.
5:17Jason Hoyte:You're lucky I thought of you at all over here.
5:19Keyzie:You're in the airport. I mean, I would have preferred a pack of Darys or something. I mean, it's not like they cost a lot.
5:23Jason Hoyte:I got a pack of Darys because he actually did work while I was away, doing my job.
5:26Mike Minogue:So you got a pack of Darys from Vietnam? Yeah. Nice. Yeah, okay, so souvenirs. Don't wink at me, man. He winks at everyone. It's just. It's what he does. He's a winker. Fucking hell, he's going to be out of control tomorrow in Dunedin and winking at everyone down there. Yeah. But in terms of souvenirs, I always get them from either the airport or the day I am leaving. It'll be like, fuck, we've got to go soon. And if I spot something on the way, you know?
5:52Jason Hoyte:Yeah, we made the mistake of getting a couple of things a bit early on and we were carting them around with you. Those chopsticks, man, took up a shitload of room in my bag. Especially three pairs and a gimp mask. I mean, why did you even? That wasn't a gift, was it? That was for me.
6:06Keyzie:Yeah, I know, but I mean, you should have got it at the end of the trip.
6:09Jason Hoyte:No, because then I could use it on the holiday.
6:11Keyzie:And all the dillies and stuff.
6:13Jason Hoyte:Again, you could use them on the holiday.
6:15Keyzie:This is the interesting thing, Keezy, that you didn't know. Yeah, Keezy. That parts went over there, because you know the limit on travel is like 27 kgs for your suitcase?

6:24Jason Hoyte:Sure, 23? More like 23, yeah.
6:26Keyzie:Oh, yeah, it was 27 when I went. 23. When he went to Vietnam, his bag weighed 22.5 kgs, and he texted me and said, whew, that was close, Hoity J. On the way back, 32 kgs. Wow. And I'll tell you. Chopsticks. 8 kg, well, yeah, some chopsticks, 8 kgs, dillies and sex toys and masks. They're heavy.
6:54Mike Minogue:So you went over to Vietnam and you bought three pairs of chopsticks, a pack of darts for dilly.
7:00Jason Hoyte:And 10 kilograms of dildos. 10 kgs of dillies and a gimp mask. And other sex toys and a gimp mask, yeah.
7:05Mike Minogue:Couldn't you get that stuff here, man?
7:06Jason Hoyte:Yeah, but there's something about the Vietnamese ones, man.
7:10Mike Minogue:From Ha Schlong Bay. You didn't even go there, did you? Nah, I skipped it in the end.
7:16Keyzie:Keezy, a dilly over there is like two bucks.
7:19Jason Hoyte:Pretty sure they're banned. Sex toys are banned there. Seriously? Yeah, they're seen as obscene.
7:25Mike Minogue:Wait, so you bought one at the black market? Yeah. The Vietnamese dilly black market. Black dilly black market.
7:32Keyzie:Black dilly black market. The black dilly black market, yeah. Fucking hell. Because I didn't do the black market thing because Pugs was - Because you're racist. No. You're like, where's the white market? He said he went underground fully when you were over there, eh? Yeah, I did. Well, it's one of the tunnels. Yeah, I did.
7:52Mike Minogue:Fucking gross, man. Hey, Jase.
7:53Keyzie:Yeah. Hey, fellas. Yeah, man. Do we still have snacks and stuff? Because we had quite a lot yesterday. No, not a banana, Pugs. Oh.
8:02Mike Minogue:Jase, you and Moggy both treat this place like some sort of vending machine. Food bank. I just don't understand it. No, you'd pay it a vending machine, wouldn't you? Well, that's correct. But both of you walk in every day and go, where are the snacks?
8:14Keyzie:Well, I mean, Mogi turns up every day with about four meals anyway. Or zero meals. Yes. And then buys four meals. Exactly.
8:24Mike Minogue:But to be fair, if I was the boss of the station, I would have snacks for you and Mogi every day. Yeah, good. Just purely because I'm like, these guys are so fucking annoying with their snacks.
8:35Keyzie:Hey, now listen, just in terms of eating. There you go, little segue. Shut you down there, Kesey.
8:41Mike Minogue:That was the Segway equivalent of just a truck slamming through the front door.
8:50Keyzie:I realise because we're going to be in Dunedin tomorrow.
8:53Mike Minogue:Are you Dunedin? Carry on. Sorry, mate. Dunedin D's not.
8:57Keyzie:What are you going to do because it's Dumpling Day for you?
9:01Mike Minogue:Dumpling Day is now Monday for me.
9:02Keyzie:Oh, right.
9:04Mike Minogue:Have you had them? No, because seriously, today I was at home and my wife was working from home And I was like, what are you having for lunch? I'm quite hungry. And then she was like, yeah, I'm hungry too. And I was like, am I going to get noodles? And she's like, no. There's sausages in the fridge that need to be eaten. And so I had to cook sausages for lunch.
9:22Jason Hoyte:Were they sort of from an old camping trip or something? They were from a camping trip. They were in the same Tupperware container.
9:26Mike Minogue:Just cut off all the mold and stuff. Same Tupperware container that the patties were in last night. And the rancid stench of rotting blood. Actually, I didn't have to eat it on Molenberg last night. We found a bap in the back of the freezer.
9:40Keyzie:Do you find when you freeze your burger buns and your baps, they're never the same? No, they're good. They get very crumbly when you take them out again. Hang on, sorry, he's asking me this.
9:55Jason Hoyte:Oh, okay, I'll go fuck myself. No, just... Well, you do most days anyway, you filthy dillies. It's an excuse for me to go fuck myself.
10:02Mike Minogue:You black market Vietnamese black dillies. No, because you freeze it while it's still fresh and that doesn't happen. And as long as they're in a sealed container, it's fine.
10:10Jason Hoyte:and that's how I freeze buns that's what I was going to say is putting it in a container like I've got sourdough chopped up like you chop it up before you put it in the container and then it's not like awkward to chop up all frozen you know when you take it out of the freezer Jase I'm talking to you about my sourdough in the freezer Vienna sourdough
10:35Jason Hoyte:listen to the big show 47 weekdays I guess That's my line. Nah, you did it pretty good, man, to be honest.

10:43Keyzie:No, don't.
10:44Mike Minogue:Are you guys finished like we've been banging on?
10:46Keyzie:I was going to get some half-price sushi. You've blown it for me now with your constant nattering.
10:52Mike Minogue:Fuck off you were going to.
10:53Keyzie:I was, man. There's still time. Go, quick. Go, Jase. For the seven weekdays, haoreki. Say bye.
