In short
The “Digital Dilemma” centers on an accidental Instagram follow after receiving a friend request, and how to handle the awkwardness without being rude—plus broader talk about follower counts, bots, and accidental follows.
Guest backgrounds
The episode is a casual panel with hosts “Keezy” and “James,” plus “Pugs” and “Jase” (regular co-hosts/regulars on The Hauraki Big Show). No specific external guest biographies are given.
Key claims
Instagram “friend requests” are actually follows; accidental follows can look bad, especially with age disparity; the best fix is to message the person and clarify it was accidental; maintaining communication is better than abruptly unfollowing.
Notable examples
A young attractive woman (around 30 years old, works “here”) followed back immediately; the host messaged her saying he accidentally followed her, and she replied she’s a huge fan and wants to be part of the show. They also discuss someone following many OnlyFans creators and a rugby league player’s partner appearing in stories.

Oh, g'day fellas. Hi. Jeez, he's blowing a gale out there, boys. She's a windy bastard, boy. Jeez Louise. She's nowhere into 950 Ks down there, mate. Oh, really? 150. Wow. 150Ks, roods flying off, no flights. Airports closed. Standing Wellington. Standing is a beautiful summer's day in the middle of winter. A still day in Wellington. It's interesting with our apartment because we've got those massive palms right outside our window. They take anything.
0:46Keyzie:And they get within inches of our windows. It's actually quite scary. It's spooky. I can see you being scared of something like that. Yeah, my wife had to hug me because I was so frightened. Fellas, I want to run something past you. He had a social media incident last night. Yes. See if we're going to talk about it. Just spat some cracker on the old microphone there, Keezy. So I'm sitting there. I'm on my phone. Yes. I'm on Instagram. While I'm on Instagram, I get a friend request. Okay. When I – I don't know about you. We'll find out. Pugs, you can be on the chat on this one as well if you need to as well.
1:19Not all the time, depending. But generally, if I get a friend request, I'll see who it is in case I know them. Yeah. And then I have to follow them back. I go on to this person. I look. I recognize the person. I have seen the person, but I don't know the person. Yeah. So for me, it would be weird for me to follow this person back. Never spoken to this person in my life. I go back out of the profile, and I look, and I'm following the person. So at some point during that process. Oh, you've accidentally. I've hit follow. Yeah, okay. But I've followed this person back immediately after their friend requested me.
2:03Right? Yeah. So that's happened straight away. So then I go, and when I see that I've followed, I think to myself, shit, have I already followed this person at some point? That's not even possible. So then I'm looking to see when I've followed. It's not. This person has followed me. I've followed back. Right. So then I'm like, well, I should unfollow because I don't know this person. And it's weird for me to be following this person because I don't know them at all.
2:30Mike Minogue:Are they a well-known person? No. Okay. Are they male or female?
2:35Keyzie:They're female. Okay. Okay. Here we go.
2:38Mike Minogue:Oh, yeah. Okay. Yes. So then I think, well, I should unfollow because I don't know the person. But the fact that I've just followed them back immediately. Yeah. I'm thinking that they're probably still on the phone or whatever device he is. Oh, that was quick. But then I would unfollow the person. Then I'd be weird. You could just quickly unfollow and then just go, because if that was them, they might think, oh, glitch maybe. Oh, yeah. But I was a little bit worried. Because I know the person works here. I was going to say, was it someone from here? Yeah, but I don't know them. Young female, older female?
3:19Mike Minogue:Attractive. Young female? Okay.
3:25Roughly, it would be getting on for 30 years, I'd say, younger than me. Okay. So, yes, young. Okay. Attractive, do you say, James? Yes. I would class her as attractive. Right. So then it becomes a weird look. Now, I'll tell you what I did. I'll tell you what I did. It is an issue, isn't it? Because you don't want to be rude. It is an issue. So then I think, wonder if a fan of the show. So then I have a look at the, see, this is what you end up doing now, isn't it? Because I'm now going, this is not a good look for a man of my age. No, sure. To be following this person. Not good. So I guess, I don't know, I guess my question is, what would your steps have been?
4:03Mike Minogue:To be honest, divorce and just slide into the DMs. Just all in.
4:08Keyzie:To clarify, though, so you unfollowed again? No, I didn't. No, you didn't. Because I felt that would have been weird, rude.
4:17Mike Minogue:What does their name start with? We might just have to cut this bit out I don't know how to deal with this I'll tell you what I did I messaged the person I said look this is a bit weird but I have accidentally followed you That's the weirdest thing you could have done I have accidentally followed you I know this is going to sound like complete bullshit but on the upside this is going to make great content for the radio show that I do. Right. The person's come back and said, I'm a huge fan of the show. Right, okay. I look forward to being... Part of the show. And I also said, I won't use your name.
4:58So she said, I look forward to being part of the content. So she is a fan of the show.
5:02Mike Minogue:Right, okay. So... Well, that's all, G. That's fine. That's right in the end, though, eh? Are you able to say her name and Pugs will beep it out? Just to see if I'm following them, just so I know who it is. Okay, okay. It's... Do you know who that is? Yes So that's the follow And then I'm like Follow back immediately And then I'm like Yeah I Quite honestly I'm You got a great result out of that It was a very honest response And you sorted it out Not anything close to what I would have done I would have had no shame And immediately unfollowing Yeah I would have panicked and called them On Instagram And set up a date at Ray Burger Set up like a one on one situation I'm going to take down at Empire.
5:48I need to chat this through.
5:50Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast.
5:57Keyzie:I probably wouldn't have even noticed. Oh, no, you wouldn't have. Because all your followers are bots. I don't get friend requests. No, they're follows. I get follows? Yeah. So if he said friend requests, it's follow on Instagram. Right, okay. It's a follow. I mean, I get friend requests on my golfing app. A lot of those. Yeah, man. Cool. And I think about a thousand requests on Facebook. Yes. Fuck, man. Well, it was slightly awkward just because of the huge age disparity there in D. Yeah. You can get into all sorts of mischief with the old social media, can't you? I knew a guy that used to get into a bit of mischief on social media.
6:38I know a guy as well who also does. It's interesting. I know the same guy. Yeah. I tell you what is interesting is people that follow people as if nobody can see that they're following the person. So you might be ploughing along through a... Yeah, there's a guy at work that's chronic for it.
6:56Mike Minogue:Yeah, there's a guy here who's following every single OnlyFans star. He follows about 5 ,000 more people. Not at Horeki either, I should point out.
7:04Keyzie:How many people are you guys sort of following in general? Because I've got fuck all, I think about 20 or 30 people I follow.
7:11Mike Minogue:And I couldn't even tell you who they were, to be honest. I'm following 850. Wow, seriously? Yeah, but I've had Instagram for a long time. Yeah, that's right. You're following 78, James. Oh, 78, am I? Okay. How many have I got? I've got to be better at Instagram. I've got about 8 ,000. 8 ,000. But they're all like... Hotties. Yeah. They're all young 20-year-old hotties that bogeys are looking at. 1 ,600, that's a lot. It is a lot. It is a lot. And it's all shit as well. Well, this is the thing, though, and this is the other thing. Last night, so then last night after that, I was going through my stories, just sitting there, and there was somebody I was like, who the fuck is this?
7:52And it was a rugby league player's partner. Whoa. Oh, yeah. I know. Was she attractive?
8:00Mike Minogue:No. No, she wasn't. Oh, okay. No, she wasn't at all. And I had absolutely no idea who it was. She's got about 300 followers or something like that. Was it a warrior? So what it would have been is this person would have done, no, this person would have done a collab, and I followed off the collab and ended up following both of the parties. Did you want to follow? Are you worried about? I am followed, yeah. No, he messaged you first and met up. He asked your name as a sponsor. This is weird.
8:25Keyzie:Can we meet for coffee so we can sort this, please? Can we read their gear?
8:29Mike Minogue:Are you worried about the sort of early onset boomer nature of your Instagram use? You don't have the accidental follows and things? I mean, I might have done that. I'm not sure. Well, that's the thing. You don't know because every now and then I'll go through mine and I'll go through all my followers and I'll just get rid of them. I'll go, why have I followed this? Why am I following this? Why am I following this? Yeah. Because you do it. Like 1 ,600 is too much. I don't know that many people.
8:54Keyzie:Yeah, how many did I have? 78. And I end up following like political shit and then your feed is full of that. Most of mine is political, I think. So good. Most of it, fellas. You've got a clean Insta and a burner Insta though, eh? Yeah, yeah On my other phone
9:13Mike Minogue:No, no, no, you can have it on the same phone Jase has got a whole other phone for looking at buzies
9:17Keyzie:Yeah, I've got a buzzy phone It's got a massive screen on it
9:23Mike Minogue:Yeah
9:23Keyzie:That's the cracked one It's an iPad
9:25Mike Minogue:No, it's covered in Gladrap Well, what an interesting dilemma, fellas Well, yeah Don't know what I would have done I probably would have just unfollowed. Yeah. To be honest, if they work here, I'd probably just leave following because almost every night there's like a work drinks. Yeah. I'll end up chatting to certain people that you recognise and end up following each other on Instagram anyway. Yeah. After work drinks, you start following each other.
9:54Keyzie:Jase, come on, man. Jase. She was really nice. I might go on the old Insta there and see if I can follow her.
9:59Mike Minogue:I say that out loud. How many people have you – oh, sorry, Pax? No, I was just going to say, I think the modern day signal that you've accidentally followed someone is if they recognised, if they had noticed that you had unfollowed, then that would be them going, oh, he's probably accidentally followed me back and pulled the pin. Right. No harm, no foul. So maybe message her and say, hey. Look, I just sort of feel like. Just forget this. Yeah.
10:25Keyzie:I think you should just keep up the communication. Yeah, maintain comms. Yeah, maintain and say, I just wanted to reiterate. Was that weird that I messaged you? Because it feels a bit weird. I feel like if the four of us did a haka. That would resolve it? Sure.
10:40Mike Minogue:Mm. Okay. Yeah, well, you guys do it, and I'll film it for you guys. Well, Pugs will lead. Pugs will lead. Pugs will lead the haka. Because Pugs is the only one here that's not been followed by this person. Yeah. And you've got to have a neutral leader. And let this person knows. Traditionally. Knows Pugs well. You need a neutral leader of the haka. Traditionally anyway
11:03Keyzie:Do you guys Because I don't I don't check How many followers I have And all that sort of stuff Do you guys do that? Yeah Because some people Are like manic about it Fuck yeah I'm manic about it Well it's on your page So you see it You know it's like Yeah Good stuff fellas There we go Problem resolved Moggy
11:18Mike Minogue:Yeah And Pugs will have fun Editing this one Hey listen to the big show 4 to 7 weekdays Radio Hauraki Good listening Doosh doosh doosh
