In short

The hosts discuss hangovers, “drink responsibly,” and whether alcohol is still fun after age 40, including setting limits and managing social pressure.

Guest backgrounds

No named guests appear; it’s a casual chat among the hosts (Kesey/“Keezy,” Moggy/“Mogi,” and Backbone/“Moggy” mentioned).

Key claims

After 40, drinking can stop being enjoyable; stopping means facing a “boring” self; recovery and tolerance differ by person and age; stopping can create conflict with a partner who prefers drinking.

Notable examples

Moggy describes antibiotics helping a sinus infection, a 24-hour stretch up after drinking from ~3pm to 5am, losing his phone, racing his daughter to the pub, and finding the phone via a lost-and-found sign. They debate drinking plans for a Queenstown trip in August (snowboarding, restaurants with fireplaces) and whether to drink less.

0:00But we're just chatting to each other. We haven't seen each other for a day, man. We're just catching up. Yeah, totally, man.

0:04Mike Minogue:We're shooting the shit. We're sucking the dick. We're brainstorming. No one calls it sucking the dick, right? Have you not even caught up with a bunch of mates that just, you know, you're sitting around sucking the dick? No. Oh.

0:16Keyzie:For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok or Raw Doggy. Four to seven every weekday on Radio Hodeo. Oh, g'day, fellas. Backbone.

0:33Mike Minogue:Hello.

0:34Keyzie:Hey. I'm going to right off the bat here put a disclaimer on this. Okay. I just have a feeling. Well, it needs to go in front of all that filth that Kesey was talking to. What are you talking about? I just have a feeling that we're heading in that direction. Is Moggy driving the bus? Yeah, totally. He's totally driving the bus to Filth Street. Filth Street.

0:54Mike Minogue:Top speed down.

0:57Keyzie:How are you going, Mogi? Bloody good. Much better. Yeah, much better. Thanks, fellas. Excellent. Woke up this morning much better. Antibiotics, eh? Yeah, man. Kia ora. Kia ora to the antibiotics. But then I hit a wall because I also woke up at five, so I just got up, Keezy, did a bit of work. And then hit the wall about 10, so I had a two-and-a-half-hour nap. Nice. So I don't know how long I'm good for. Yeah. But it's certainly better. I was poor. It was, you know, because the other thing is I'm taking no drugs to help, which is unique for me. I love taking drugs. And so, you know, when you've got a sinus that's pouring, like one of your nostrils, all your nose is just running and you can't handle any light and your eyes are pouring with.

1:41Yes. I've never had that. Oh, it's hot. I do know what you mean. It's really flippant but horrible. So I had that going all day yesterday, which was a miserable experience. But, yeah, we're on the up, fellas. Great. And it's one of those points, you just start treasuring your health again. Oh, I'll never do it again. Totally. I'll never stay up until five in the morning drinking piss with my good mates, having a great time listening to tunes and just loving life. I'll never do that again.

2:07Mike Minogue:What are you up to tonight? Would you be keen to do it? Nah. I genuinely, I need to take some serious time off.

2:14Keyzie:The problem I've got, Keith. Yeah, yeah. It's social events. I was watching something the other day where this dude was talking about, after 40, just forget the piss. It's not fun anymore. 100%. Just don't worry about it. Well, the truth is it is a lot of fun, and it remains a lot of fun. Yeah, I found the older I got with it, the window of fun was smaller and smaller. But I'm not like that. The other night of drinking, I haven't done that for I don't know how long. I normally manage to pull it in pretty early. So if it was like the old school drinking that we used to do, then absolutely. And I do think you have to reduce it in how you do it, but it is absolutely still fun.

2:59Mike Minogue:100%. That's a yarn. So what time when you got on the piss till 5am, what time did you start? Oh. Well, this is when I lost my phone as well, Keezy. I told you about this.

3:11Keyzie:Did you lose your phone?

3:12Mike Minogue:For for sake. The Horaki B Show, weekdays from four, on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show Podcast. So, what time was it? Three-ish? Three in the afternoon. Right, okay, well, there goes my advice. My advice was going to be start early. We did breakfast, right? We were doing breakfast. That's right. That's right. So I felt like I was on a long weekend. So you were up for 24 hours. Huh? You were essentially up for 24 hours. Oh, yeah. I was, yeah. Fucking hell. Well, I was literally up for 24 hours. Because 5am would feel like fucking 8, 9am. Yeah, well, we went to the pub, the Cav, to meet a mate.

3:51And so I was racing my daughter. And I'm really enjoying it because I'm still at a stage where I can just waste her in every single competitive outing that we have.

4:00Mike Minogue:She hates it, you know. So what race was it at the Cav, a boat race? Well, no, it was a race to the pub, which is one of the greatest races, a running race to the pub, one of the great races, Gizzy. And I was just destroying her. Nice, man. You know, keeping on changing the finish line, all that sort of shit. pathetic pathetic but dying laughing because she kept on cheating which I was loving but then we went out then we went to Gypsy Tea Room is that what it's called Gypsy Tea Room yep yes and then went to the Graylin RSA oh yes and then we're like and my daughter wasn't allowed in because it was too late so it's like let's go back to our place so then it sort of kicked on now when I got back to my place I was like where's my phone and I had to track it it was in somebody's house so I had to jump on my push bike I was roughly half pissed.

4:47Yeah. And I got to the address and stuck on the gate was a sign saying, if you've lost your phone, ring the bell.

4:55Mike Minogue:Right. So that person runs a lost and found for phone. So I was running down the street. I ran past this guy who was laughing at me, laughing at my daughter. My phone flew out of my pocket. I had no idea. He picked it up and took it inside. That's nice, fella. I remember you. I remember you. Oh, good day, mate. How is your gun there? But yeah, it was heaps of fun. And then the other trouble is I'm going down to Queenstown with my cousin. He's a shocking bird.

5:20Keyzie:He is a shocking bird. Because we've met him, haven't we?

5:23Mike Minogue:Not a particular one. Right, you started at three and finished at five. You need to bring that back by how many hours? I need to start at seven in the morning. You need to bring that back by five hours, finish at midnight. So you need to start at 10 a.m.

5:33Keyzie:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, 10 a.m. and then in bed by 7.30. I'll tell you what I did in Topo. I had two glasses of wine, maybe three glasses of wine. Yes. And then I stopped. Yeah. I've never done that before. No. And it was really enjoyable because you're sort of half pissed. But normally if I get half pissed, I'm like, you, what did you go? Yeah, let's go. Righto, let's get into it. Let's turn it up. Yeah, we're just starting, boys. Let's go. I've whet my whistle. Come on, Mum. Come on, Margie. Let's go. Let's go. But, I mean, you would struggle, Keezy. I mean, if – At what? Like two or three beers when you're going out.

6:08Mike Minogue:I'd struggle.

6:09Keyzie:In the sense of going, okay, I've had two beers. I'm done now. No.

6:13Mike Minogue:I'm totally fine. I don't give a shit. That's a Keezy. That's Keezy through and through. You don't give a shit about what? A Keezy's the kind of guy that can have two or three beers and then stop. I don't care, yeah. I'd rather have, to be honest, the amount of beers I would like to have, no, is five. Five pints. Beautiful. If I get to five. Yeah. So at any point going up to five, I'm like, I wouldn't mind another one, but that's okay. But when I get to five, it's like, yeah, this is great. And then that's when I'm making a decision like, hey, is it worth carrying on? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've got to be better at that.

6:41Mike Minogue:Yeah, but it's just something, yeah, I don't know. And that's why I am just all or nothing at Witch's One, so I've got to stop. But then it's like, well, I'm going down to Queenstown, snowboarding, there's going to be restaurants with fireplaces. Yeah. Am I going to not drink 18 bottles of wine and smoke darts? Yeah. When is this? Oh, in August. A couple of weeks. Yeah, yeah, that's right. It's tricky. It is.

7:04Keyzie:It's really tricky. It's really tricky.

7:05Mike Minogue:It's tricky because mogie's involved. Yeah. You know what I mean? Like if it was someone else, I'd be like, oh, here's what you could do. The only thing I love more than not drinking is drinking. Drinking, yeah. And those things, there's almost neck and neck how much I love those two things.

7:19Keyzie:Well, this is what this guy I was watching the other day was saying, you know, after 40, just fuck it. Don't drink anymore. It's just not fun. He's probably right. But then he was saying, but the other side of that is that you have to then come to terms with the boring part of yourself. And this is the problem. You are your boring self. But I don't mind being bored because I'll just do a bit of work. Yeah, well, that's right. You are more productive. Absolutely. And the problem that the person who has to face that side of me, as I've said before, probably about 18 times, is my wife who hates me when I don't drink because I'm so bored and I don't sit down, I won't just have a chat.

7:54I'm busy doing things. So that's tricky because me wanting to stop drinking because I've become a better person and my wife wanting me to continue to be a piece of shit. And also another tricky thing is she's fine with it because she's 10 years younger than me, so she recovers like somebody that's 10 years younger than me and has got no understanding that it gets worse and worse and worse.

8:20Keyzie:I'm very familiar with that dynamic, not in my own life, but with other people where the partner stops drinking and the other one goes, oh, fuck, you're boring.

8:30Mike Minogue:The person whose advice was to not drink after 40, how old are they? He was about 48. Cool, so he's had eight years on the piss after 40. so he can say that.

8:39Keyzie:Well, no, he hadn't drunk for years. But he's still done it, though. Yeah, when he was like 41, 42. I think there's something in it. But it depends. I think it depends. You say that about people that drink like we do, not people that drink like Keezy does. Yes. But you're an old man, couple of beers, good as gold. If you can do it like that, that's the dream. Yeah, well, that is the dream. But also, it's a complete waste of time. Like, why bother? Because it's yummy. Completely.

9:04Mike Minogue:Because I like the buzz. Yeah, well, I love the buzz. and the more you drink, the bigger the buzz. Yeah, that's why we love the buzz.

9:11Keyzie:Exactly, Keezy, we love the buzz too.

9:13Mike Minogue:I don't like the buzz past a certain point. I actually don't want to get to that point, depending on what I'm doing. Well, see, this is what... If I'm at the pub, I don't want to be full buzz, can barely speak.

9:21Keyzie:Oh, no, I don't like that buzz. That's why my wife doesn't drink. Well, A, because she doesn't like the taste of it, and B, because she... She doesn't like any booze. No, she doesn't like how it makes her feel. And I'm like, what? Right. What? And she's not a problem drinker. in any way. It's a weird thing to say. When I first started going out. Except that she won't. When I first started going out with her, I've told you this story before, I thought she was a massive piss head. No.

9:47Mike Minogue:It's because you were wasted. Yes, I was the piss head. You couldn't believe how much booze you guys were getting through. Yeah. But it was just you. Exactly. Well, good luck for Queenstown, Moggy. Look, we'll start after Queenstown. You know what you do? After that, she's clean slate. Get the antibiotics ready to go. That's actually, I have thought about that, Casey. Believe you me. Believe you me. Hey, listen to The Big Show, 4-7 Weekdays Radio, Hauraki.
