In short

Sports talk and weekend hangover/health banter on The Hauraki Big Show, including NRL injury news (Ali Katoa), rugby/All Blacks entertainment vs technical officiating, and a long cricket match.

Guests

No specific guests appear; it’s a host-style conversation between regulars (Mogi, Keezy, Lane, Toddy, Jase, Pugs, “Minaya”).

Guest backgrounds

Lane is a commentator who flew in for an 8am flight and then called every ball of an 80-over cricket game; he also did rugby commentary Sunday.

Key claims

Ali Katoa is stable after seizure activity and brain surgery to relieve pressure; Te Maire Martin’s medical retirement is linked to unnecessary bleeding from a game incident.

Notable examples

Eden Park’s Tongan fan singing; All Blacks match had long stoppages due to third-umpire screen connectivity; cricket dragged after early expectations.

0:01Go. For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. Or Raw Doggett, 4 to 7 every weekday on Radio Horek here.

0:18Keyzie:Yeah, boy. G'day, fellas. Hello. How good, eh? Hi. How goody morning. Everyone kind of in summery gear, kind of. Well, you're just in your normal t-shirt, Mogi. Yeah. Yeah, I'm always in a T-shirt, man. Yeah. Aren't I? Yeah, you are, actually. I very rarely see you in a shirt. In anything else, yeah. Yes. Never wear a shirt.

0:39Mike Minogue:We were just chatting about Ali Katoa in the league, right? Yeah, man. Getting knocked out. What's the latest? Ali Katoa, stable condition after seizure activity, ongoing surgery, had a brain bleed, and the surgery was to release fluid and relieve pressure on his brain. That's what made Te Maire Martin have to retire medically from the NRL. Yeah, and it was completely unnecessary. Completely unnecessary. That is absolutely screwed.

1:03Keyzie:And that was, what, like after the game? Yeah. They took him like halfway through or towards the end of the second half. Yeah, that's what I sort of. He got to stretch it off.

1:12Mike Minogue:Yes. The reason they brought him off was because of the bleeding. Apparently. That's the reason why. They cut the gash. And that was the only reason why they kept bringing him off. Or they brought him off. Right. Otherwise, they would have left him out there still. And he was completely effed.

1:22Keyzie:That is a shocking dereliction of duty there. That is a shocker.

1:28Mike Minogue:Because he's one of the best back, well, he's probably the best back row in the competition. And that's the problem, right? It's like, oh, we've got to have him out there. Got to have him out there. And so. Yeah. For what?

1:35Keyzie:And the guy that did it was in tears.

1:37Mike Minogue:Yeah, I can imagine.

1:38Keyzie:You know, he was like literally bawling his eyes out. Oh, was he? Yeah, he was crying because he was like, oh, what have I done? What have I done? But great game, though. Great game. It was a lot of fun. And particularly in comparison to the All Blacks that we spent earlier that day. Shocking. In terms of entertainment value, crowd involvement. What about the singing from the Tongan fans? It was like it was over the loudspeaker. It was unbelievable. Initially thought it was a recording. It was so beautiful. Yes, it was. Stunning. Yes. But just all go the whole time.

2:07Mike Minogue:Having that atmosphere at Eden Park. Yes, it can be done. Yes, it can be done. The last time there was an atmosphere there was 2015 Cricket World Cup semi. And since then there's never any atmosphere. It's like tense and that's it.

2:20Keyzie:There was no comparison between the rugby and the league. and I was just effing and jeffing my way throughout that entire All Black Test match. So was I. It was a debacle. And then cheering and screaming, because I think people might think that I hate it, but when we were getting those tries at the end, I'm screaming the house down. Sure. I'm the same. The only thing that annoys me is you've got these great players and it just, yeah. And what a crowd there, man. How magnificent did that look? And then they haven't sorted out the technical side of it and so they go, oh, we haven't got. You see that, Keezy?

2:54We haven't got the angles on that, sorry. So there was a head high right at the start, so the third umpire needed to show the umpire on the ground, the ref on the ground.

3:03Mike Minogue:Yeah. But the third umpire wasn't connected to the big screens. So they couldn't show them? So they couldn't show them. So without a word of lie, the game stopped for 10 minutes. Oh, wow. The first half took like 57 minutes to say. Wow, it was ridiculous.

3:16Keyzie:Holy cow. And he should never have got a red card, by the way. That was stupid. Stupid. Do you know, because what time was that game?

3:22Mike Minogue:9 a.m. Nine. I literally had a thing set on my phone, 9am All Blacks, and I looked at it and then looked outside at how nice it was and said, I don't want to watch it. Ah, right. And just went out and we did some gardening and stuff instead. Ah. But, like, this is. Actually, I got through the first half and then I went and worked and just had it on my computer. Yeah, which I'd do if we had something to do, but I was like, fuck, it's so nice outside. And the All Blacks haven't entertained me enough recently that I've just, like, a bit. I'm waiting for a big game to get me.

3:49Keyzie:It was a classic one of those games where just neither side got a flow on and it was just riddled with mistakes and technical problems. It was just a debacle.

4:00Mike Minogue:Because the frustrating thing is you look at the players and you go, these guys are sick, and when they string it all together, it's going to be mean, but I'm just waiting for it to happen. I just can't be fucked. It's got to cook at the same point. But it was it, man.

4:09Keyzie:Magnificent weather. Fuck, it was good.

4:11Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show Podcast

4:19Keyzie:I've been wearing shorts for three days, fellas

4:21Mike Minogue:Man Me too

4:23Keyzie:How crazy is that? Feel good, man? Oh, yeah Actually, my wife said to me yesterday I think your legs have gone a bit bigger Wow Maybe from the golf From walking And I went, yeah, baby Hell yeah Yeah My cut-offs were really tight around the thigh Still got facet withered calves and ankles There's nothing wrong with your legs But yeah, it's nice It has been good, isn't it? And it makes a huge difference I actually did gardening yesterday too, Keezy

4:53Mike Minogue:I didn't drink so good, eh? I didn't drink any alcohol over the weekend Felt good on you I did the opposite of that Oh, you got steamed Well, yeah, I did Shame on you, man Yeah, well, I wasn't going to I was like, can't And then I got home The missus had a bottle of wine open I thought, oh, yeah, that'll go Just a little tipple So me and her up till 2am That's so great, though Running yarns I would love that And then the next day Work, work, work, work followed by a mate the guy I was working with come over had a couple of beers then went into the cricket everybody was hung over doing that Minaya was like a corpse on the couch there it was pretty grim and was it enjoyable at all?

5:32look I had to drink my way through it but then in the break we had Indian and that just levelled everybody again everyone went into a food coma and we were just praying for a collapse we didn't care who it came from yes didn't care just let's get this over

5:43Keyzie:well it was funny because I was watching it a bit and I was thinking oh the fellas might get away with this here. I know. Yeah especially at 40 odd for four. For five yeah and I was like oh this could be over real early. 220. And then it just dragged. Those are the most painful ones where your expectations are oh shit this is going to be over in 30 overs or 20 overs. Yeah. And then it drags to the 40th and you're like. Well Lane, so Lane had the night before the ACC did the podcast down in Wellington. Then he went back to Paul Ford's house. Then he jumped in a cab at 7.20 to make an 8am flight.

6:19He was calling Joe Dries, like, I'm not going to make this flight. He was the last one on. They held the plane for him. He was sprinting through the airport.

6:25Mike Minogue:Gets back here, has to commentate the cricket. Got home, dropped his bags, said hi to his missus and bye to his missus. And then commentated every single ball of that game. So 80 overs. He's a fucking freak. And he had more energy. Than everyone else. Than everyone else. It was pretty amazing because he was an absolute heap of... And then you see him in here today. He just came in before and they showed us the golf sim that he set up in the photo studio. He's sprightly. Then he did the rugby commentary on Sunday. I wouldn't say he was sprightly.

6:59Keyzie:I thought he was pretty sprightly. That would be an exaggeration. He seemed quite subdued to me.

7:04Mike Minogue:I was expecting him to be a heap of shit like I would have been and he seemed relatively sprightly. Yeah, he looked good. He looked like he was wearing new clothes. He must have burned his clothes from the weekend. I love that about him.

7:13Keyzie:He just goes hard. Unbelievable. Really impressive. It's ridiculous. Yeah. I was struggling, but I did enjoy it. I haven't done any commentary for a long time, so that was a bit of fun. And then yesterday, what happened yesterday? Sunday. Sunday, I did something. Oh, there was Halloween, wasn't there? Was it on Friday? No, it was Friday. Yeah, so the kid was out and about doing that. And then yesterday, I can't remember what happened in the morning, but went around to a mate's place and watched the Buckba League. Cleaned the house. That's what I did. All that. watched the league and had a few beers.

7:45Yeah, man. So I drank far too much, but that is it.

7:51Mike Minogue:Okay, man, yeah. Until the next fine weekend. I know. Well, that's the trouble. That was the trouble as well. It was like, oh, my God. We're going to need a beer festival this weekend. Yeah, I'm going to try and get out of all of that.

8:01Keyzie:It's funny, man, because I was telling Kesey on the way here when we were walking over, I just had the most shocking performance anxiety dream last night, And I think it might be related to the Bear Fest, but also just work in general. Because you've been shocking lately. It was such a bad dream that it woke me up, one of those ones. And I was like, oh, fuck. I had someone I know who has a similar thing, her former bosses were chasing after her. Yes. She'd left that place five years ago. I was trying to get to the big show, and I was getting waylaid by all these things. And you guys were right up on the top of this hill, and I was going, oh, fuck, I'm never going to make it there.

8:39Keyzie:Jeez. Then you rang me on the phone and we're effing and jeffing because I was like 15 or 20 minutes late. I'm like, I'm trying to get there, Moggy. And then Toddy rang me and was like, this is why you guys need to get in here early. This is the exact – and I was like, this has got nothing to do with it, Toddy. It's not what. How realistic is that? And just woke up in a frenzy of, oh, my God. And you were like half an hour into the show. Yeah. By the time I got there. I think the thing is, Jase, all you want to do is just do the radio show, but there's all this stuff getting in your way. Yes. I just want to do the radio show.

9:11Keyzie:Well, you literally, because it was out of fear, people going, can you just help me with this, Jase? We're like, it'll take two minutes. Yeah. And I was effing and jeffing and going, I really can't, man. I've got to go and do the show. And they were going, seriously, it'll take two minutes. Yeah. And I'd be like, fuck, okay. That is funny, isn't it?

9:25Mike Minogue:It's because of all this extra stuff now. Obviously, you're filming. We've got to go do this festival, and all you really do want to do is just the radio show. Well, I think there's plenty of water to go under the bridge. I think that's what it is. It's not so much the acting. It's like, all I want to do is this, but there's all this water to go under the bridge. Yeah. And that'll be starting to wade.

9:44Keyzie:My wife and I, because she's not having a great time at the moment. Does she want to join the big show? I just want Christmas to be here. I think we're both in that zone. And it's like, but exactly that. There's a lot to happen before, then and now.

9:59Mike Minogue:Yeah. Woo! Woo! I don't drink any alcohol. Good on you, man. Feel good. It's good, man. Makes a difference. Tell you what, I wanted to. Not like a Friday night. It was so beautiful. We'd had a delicious meal. We were starting to watch a movie. And I was like, man, a nice glass of red wine or something. It'd be lovely. I was like, no, not going to. That's the one. And then I didn't.

10:18Keyzie:It's good. Does that mean you're going to go exceptionally hard on Friday?
