In short

The hosts discuss a return to New Zealand after European travel, focusing on “Europe is better” impressions, holiday spending shock, and travel mishaps (sinusitis, expensive meals, wine/tobacco costs), plus future plans to do shows from Europe.

Guests

No guests appear; it’s just the hosts chatting (Jason, Mogi, Kesey).

Key claims

Europe’s history and architecture feel superior to NZ; Europe is far more expensive than Asia/Vietnam; converting prices to NZ dollars helps psychologically; Croatia is “beautiful” but unexpectedly pricey; Spain/Portugal may be cheaper; air-con and flights triggered sinusitis; Italy’s wine culture led to daily red wine; walking 14K steps/day was manageable when surroundings were interesting.

Notable examples

Dubrovnik (“King’s Landing”) with a $37 NZ bento bowl; Vietnam dinner costing ~$480 NZ; London/Spain wine bottles up to ~£70–£90; Spain cigarettes $6–$8 per pack; “A Place in the Sun” villa budget talk; golf scheduling text immediately after landing.

0:00Keyzie:For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok or Raw Dog It. 4 to 7 every weekday on Radio Horeke. G'day fellas. G'day Jason. Hello man. How you going team? I'm actually great. Good to be back man. It is good to be back. It is, it's really good. I was really looking forward to coming home. Look outside, magnificent. Magnificent. Well, it's not compared to London and Spain and all that sort of thing. It's a bit different. You wouldn't understand this, Jase, but when you go overseas, it's just better. Yeah.

0:39Mike Minogue:It's weird because I look outside and I'm used to looking at thousands of year old city walls and stuff. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

0:47Keyzie:Charcuterie board and a bottle of Pinot.

0:47Mike Minogue:The thing is you wouldn't understand, Jase, it's just the history, man.

0:51Keyzie:Oh, sure, sure. It's like everywhere you look, it's just the history. Yeah. No fear.

0:55Mike Minogue:More of a Chianti or a Bordeaux if you're in France or something.

0:58Keyzie:Oh, the cheaper stuff.

0:59Mike Minogue:Yeah, that makes sense. To be fair, even the cheap stuff is better than here, Jason. Yeah, the cheap stuff. Yeah. It's just something about it. It's just better. You're looking tan, Mogi. Well, I was before I went to London. I'll tell you what, the way to do it is go Spain first and then go to London, just finish off with, you know, seven grey miserable days. It sucked when we were there as well. Yeah, it's pretty shit. Because my wife, because we went like a couple of years ago and she's like, oh, I'd love to come back in summer. And I was like, okay, cool. So we went back in summer, way more expensive, way more people there, and it was still shit.

1:30Yeah, I tell you what, I'll never go back. Really? I don't think so. Yeah. I think, I mean, I had a great time. I could have absolutely done things better. Number one, travel with somebody. Yes. Don't go alone. Don't go when your mates have all gone away for summer holidays. Yeah. So you've got people to visit, et cetera. That would have been good. But it was great. and obviously the main reason was Oasis, but in terms of if you're going all that way, are you going to go somewhere that's pretty much New Zealand but with older buildings?

2:01Keyzie:When I was in Vietnam, what I've got over. I know what you're saying, Mogi. We've actually had some pretty stunning weather. We had a beautiful, beautiful weather for about a week and then it shat the bed, if that's any consolation. And it's been fucking cold.

2:22Mike Minogue:We walked off the plane. I got carried off on the shoulders of all the other travellers because I did such a great holiday. Is that what they do? Wow. Yeah, you just sort of tell everyone about your holiday, and they're like, oh, my God, that's the best holiday anyone's ever had. Yes. Yeah. But when we walked out of the airport, Lucy and I were both like. Did you have to walk out? Holy fuck, yes. Nah, because we didn't have as good a holiday as you. We were like, holy shit, it is so cold here. Yeah, I thought that's the thing about New Zealand is it's so cold. And then she looked at me and then she said, oh, take me back to Europe.

2:59Mike Minogue:Am I right? Am I right? Yeah. So my dream now, and you'll probably feel the same way, Kesey, is just to do a little radio show from one of the little beaches there in Italy or out in Spain or something like that.

3:11Keyzie:Hey, Croatia. Croatia, sure. I'll be down for that. Funnily enough, we had a friend just come back from Croatia this weekend or she'd been all over the place. It's everyone. I have not heard one single person say anything bad about Croatia. It's really expensive. The Bosnians aren't a fan. All people are just like, it's fucking beautiful.

3:31Mike Minogue:It's really expensive. Is it? It's fucking expensive. Was it? I thought it was going to be the cheapest part of the trip. It was the most expensive by far. So we went to - I'll tell you what, Keatsy, that surprises me, mate. Same. So we went to Dubrovnik, right? King's Landing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Which is cool. I knew it would be packed. and you'll be full of cruise ship tourists, blah, blah, blah, blah. Yeah. We went out for dinner and I got like a little bento bowl. You would have been fuming and spent an extra couple of bucks. A bento bowl in Croatia. You don't know they've got a St. Pierre's sushi over there.

4:00Yeah, they had a St. Pierre's.

4:01Mike Minogue:It was the equivalent of that, honestly, a little chicken bento bowl because we'd been eating so much pasta and pizza. An ass. An ass. And I was like, I just want – my wife chose it. I was like, I'll just get a bento bowl, like a bit of fucking chicken schnitty, some rice and lettuce and shit. It was 37 New Zealand dollars. Oh, yeah. And she got a curry. Yeah. And it was like, yeah, almost, it was like over 40 New Zealand dollars for the shittest cash. And it was just like, wow. And that was standard. You would have been horrified by the kind of money I was spending while I was at work. He's absolutely horrified.

4:35I was thinking about you on holiday and I was like. Well, the thing is about, the thing is though, I'm in a different stage of my life. So when I was at your stage of life, I was spending what you're spending. Being more sensible. But now I've just. You don't care. No, well, and it's not that I'm rolling in it, but if you can't spend a bit more by the time you're 16 years older, like, yeah. Honey. You've got to, but fuck, we got rolled. We got absolutely fucking rolled at one point.

5:00Mike Minogue:Really? They are this place. Sorry, you go, Jason. No, well, I was just going to say. Sorry, you've been away.

5:07Keyzie:Yeah. Old Pug San and I have been slogging away. Yeah, I got a bento box in Vietnam. It was like$1.50. It was the best bento box I've ever had. But just in terms of being rolled, that happened quite seriously. We went to a restaurant in Vietnam. It cost us like$480 New Zealand dollars, me and the girls. In Vietnam. In Vietnam. And it was the most fucking horrific. It was just like this massive meat platter with flabs of meat on it. And that was it. Well, we were having one of those arguments. Yeah. And I went, oh, fuck, let's just go to this one. It's just down the road. Terrible. Terrible, fellas.

5:52Keyzie:Yeah.

5:52Mike Minogue:Because there is something about going on holiday, right? Yeah. You won't understand this, Jason. You won't get this, Jason. I know. It feels like a long time ago. You will, because this is why I like to go to fucking Asia every now and then on holiday. You love Asia. That's true. Because I love Asia. But also, you piss up and eat a fuckload, and then you get a bill at the end of it. You're like, oh, that's all good. Yeah. Yeah, so 20 bucks. You do it in Europe, you have fuck all, and you get a bill at the end of it, and you're like, what the fuck? Yeah. For three entire weeks of your holiday.

6:21Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast. One of the tricks you've got to do is convert every penny you spend, convert it immediately into New Zealand dollars. That's right. That makes you feel so much better. So much better. So if you're in the UK and a beer costs you, you know, 12 pounds. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You go, oh, good, that's 24 bucks. That's good. And actually, it's about 36. Yeah. Yeah, it just makes you feel. So I went out for dinner with a mate of mine who, he loves drinking wine. But I was staying at his house, so it was like, I'm just going to pay for everything.

6:59I've tried to. He's quite sneaky with paying bills. 70 pound for a bottle of wine. 90 pound for a bottle of wine. And doing like three or four bottles of those at a sitting. And just thinking to yourself. I was going to ask. That's$300 for a bottle.

7:17Keyzie:Breaking down your budget, breaking down your budget, how much? I didn't have a budget. Well, if you looked at your sort of spending. I'm not proud of that. You know we did. I'm not proud of that at all. How much percentage pass? Are we talking 10%, 20%, 40 %? Well, because it's so expensive, probably 50%. Yeah, I don't know. Well, I wasn't doing anything else. Yeah. So probably most of it. Of course, the big problem was that I immediately got sinusitis.

7:50Mike Minogue:See, I can tell from your voice. Yeah, it's completely cooked. Completely cooked. Wow. So that was from all the air con on all the flights over there. Got over there, and then I was on those darts. I got recommended. Yes. Coffee. I was like, fuck, these cigarettes suck. So in Spain, where they're like$8 a pack, heaven. Yes,$6 to$8 a pack, heaven on earth. Worth moving just for that instead of$50 a packet. So I'm smoking all these darts, changing packs, going, the tobacco here is really harsh. And I worked out it was because I had sinus fuckingitis again. Oh, good times. And so I was just cooked.

8:25I was cooked the entire time.

8:27Keyzie:I tell you what, mate, you can find a bloody good little place in Spain for bugger all. Because there's a show I watch called A Place in the Sun. A Place in the Sun. It's really good. A beautiful little villa. Everybody over there was talking about it. Yes. A Place in the Sun. Si, si, senor.

8:42Mike Minogue:Si, si. So you'll be like, oh, I've got£80 ,000 to spend. I want five bedrooms and a view of the ocean and a pool. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you'll be like, what? So that was a bit of a fucker. Yes. So I couldn't enjoy the – it was good because I didn't go as hard as I otherwise would have. In fact, I couldn't because I was so fucked. So I'm hoping it goes away now that I'm back. But it won't. I'll go to the doctor. My piss consumption was relatively low until I met up with my brother-in-law for a week. I was going to say, yeah. So, because when we're in Italy, I would drink at least a bottle of, and Italy was an exception, I had at least a bottle of red wine every day because it was so fucking good.

9:21Keyzie:That's what you do there. 100%.

9:23Mike Minogue:But then as soon as we got to Croatia and met up with a brother-in-law for a week, it was like every day we were fucking smashing pounds. Pounds in it. Which is great. Yeah.

9:29Keyzie:You need a comrade in arms, don't you? you because like your wife doesn't drink a lot of piss and it's just it's very focusing when there's one person that's hitting the booze and the other one's just going oh you're gonna have all of that are you absolutely it's the only thing that i'm actually interested in yeah like the miss because she was away so she was away and she was doing all these walks and then she was um she had her course so she was in barcelona did that for a couple of weeks and then she went away for a week or 10 days on her own up the coast and did all this stuff and she was touring around with her cousin who went over and met her from London and then we were in wherever we were and we had to get to a tobacconist around the way, that was about 2k and so we went up there, walked back and then went up there and walked back a bit later on the day and then the missus was going, because we haven't done any walking, I was like, what are you talking about?

10:19All we've been doing is fucking walking. That was too much walking. I just want to go somewhere sit down eat and drink. That's all I want to do. You should go to FG, man. I'm going to. We are. But yeah, like walking around, I do actually don't give a shit.

10:40Mike Minogue:We averaged about 14K a day. Yeah, that's fucking awesome. It was awesome. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, if you're into it. We were like that too. The plane was more interesting. London was like, I did it because I felt like I had to. Yes. But it just does not interest me.

10:58Keyzie:Yeah. Yeah. I've fucking been walking like a trooper lately. I have to. I don't mean overseas. Yeah. I'm walking most days. It's quite full on. I get this thing in my body where I go, okay, I have to move now. And my wife and I just go on these fucking massive hikes. Has this got any relationship to the fact that you're moving house and you're hugely anxious? No, actually. Do you know what's funny? I'm actually pretty relaxed. Oh, that's good. Yeah. I too. Because it started out of anxiety, Kesey. It did. It did. But like in Vietnam, because we're not drinking piss. No, exactly. You know what I mean?

11:35Keyzie:We fucking walked fucking miles. And you can walk miles. And I didn't. It was fine.

11:41Mike Minogue:But you can walk miles when everything around you is really interesting. Yeah, that's true. And I do love the streets of Spain. They would be great.

11:48Keyzie:I fucking fantasize about that. It was the absolute shit. Cobbles. Yeah, exactly. And the architecture and why things were made. I was frothing over their walls, their farm walls, which are just rocks that are just placed together with no mortar at all. They just pick them and plonk them all. There's fucking a billion kilometres of them. You're like, how the fuck did they make these fucking walls? And I was thinking, Jase is going to love it when I go back home and start talking to him about walls. But I would love that, I think. I'd love that sort of shit. Dude, it's out the gate, but the retelling of the story.

12:25It's like when you're there, great. When you're telling someone else, have you heard Mogi's fucking farm wall yarns, man? The guy sucks.

12:31Mike Minogue:He should have saved that for the radio, man. I guess you had to be there, Jason. Yeah. And that's the thing, you were here.

12:39Keyzie:Definitely Spain is on the list. And also you'd like Spain. And Portugal.

Read the full transcript

12:42Mike Minogue:And Portugal, because you wouldn't have to part with as much of a dollar. Yeah, you love a dollar. It's like the Vietnam of Europe. Yeah.

12:49Keyzie:I'm such a tight ass.

12:51Mike Minogue:Also, the other funny thing, before we wrap up, when I was flying on my final leg, I sent through a few ideas to the Big Show chat and my phone was in airplane mode. And then as soon as I put my SIM card in and turned my phone on, they were obviously all sent to the Big Show group chat. So literally 30 seconds after I turned my phone on back in New Zealand, I get a text from Jase, when are we playing? I was literally getting my bag out of the overhead locker.

13:17Keyzie:I was like, give me a fucking charge and we'll go play golf, man. In my defence, I actually thought you were already home.

13:24Mike Minogue:No, I was literally just turning my phone on. Yeah. Sorry, man. Tomorrow, maybe. No, Thursday.

13:30Keyzie:Yeah, okay, Thursday. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Good shit, fellas. It sounds great. Yeah, it was good. Good time had by all. Yeah.

13:36Mike Minogue:But we'll really get in depth on it on the radio show.

13:39Keyzie:Hard out on the radio, man. Good shit, man. Can't wait. Walls and shit.

13:43Mike Minogue:Spanish ones, man. I'll tell you what, man. Did you get into the language? CC! Yeah, pretty much to that extent. Yeah. Gracias. Gracias, gracias.

13:53Keyzie:Boy. Zing, ciao.

13:57Mike Minogue:Hey, listen to the big show, Football 7, man. You'll love it on Horaki.
