In short
The hosts chat about sleep problems (insomnia, frequent night waking, coffee timing), anxiety thoughts, and how morning walks/route choices affect their mood; they also discuss music/podcasts while walking and local Auckland spots (K-Road, K Road alleyways, K’ Road sun/shade, K Road public toilets, walking to Key Street/water, Ponsonby).
Guests
No guests. The episode is a banter segment with the regular hosts: Jase, Keezy (Keeser/Keesey), and Mogi/Moogie, plus a producer/voice referenced as “Pugzone.”
Key claims
Thoughts can be “bullshit” (Eckhart Tolle: “You are not your thoughts”); coffee timing and pressure to sleep worsen insomnia; walking without earbuds improves engagement with the environment.
Notable examples
A 4:30am garage door opening while one host was asleep; waking repeatedly for hours; choosing routes down K Road to the water and back via Ponsonby Road; Tool song “Vicarious”/“Hooker with a Penis” appearing on Spotify.

0:14Keyzie:Oh, g'day fellas!
0:20Mike Minogue:Meh, meh. Hello. Is your throat sore now, Jase? No, not at all, man. Yeah, not me, man. I'm a backbone. I've got so much.
0:28Keyzie:You guys probably wouldn't know the scar tissue in my throat. Just constantly getting jackhammered. You know that it's just like, it doesn't affect me at all. Right, okay. Like I could talk for 25 hours straight. Yeah, it's nothing compared to the hammering. And still be smooth as.
0:48Mike Minogue:We are 50 seconds into this.
0:53Keyzie:Disclaimer for all the people already listening.
0:56Mike Minogue:You walked into that one. That was quite funny. How's your day, fellas? Yeah, very good, thanks. Good day. Good day. Lovely. Oh, that's good. How about you, Keezy? Yeah, it was all G. All G. It was all G. All good enough? Yeah, it was fine. It wasn't amazing. It was okay. Can we? Another beautiful day. Yeah, crack it. I've got to start getting up early. I was saying to the missus so we can go for an early morning stroll. Yeah, yeah. Sunrise around our joint.
1:22Keyzie:Can we just have a bit of sleep chat here for a sec? Sure. Because I don't know what the fuck is going on, but the last two weeks. My mind just jumps to filth immediately. Yeah, of course it does. The last two weeks, fucking terrible. No. Not as bad as mine. Just taking ages to go to sleep. I'm asleep like that. And waking up continuously through the night. I do that. I never wake up. And this is after, you know, walking 10K in a day. What the fuck, man? How many coffees are you having? My normal, three a day. Yeah, what time's your last one? Usually about 11.30, 12. Yeah, right. Well, that should be fine.
2:01Keyzie:Well, totally. I mean, I used to have a coffee at night and be sweet as. I used to have coffee before I went to bed. Well, people do that, don't they? Yeah, they do. Oftentimes when you're out for dinner, you'll have a post-dinner little coffee there. I do that. Yeah, so do I. And I find I'm as good as gold. Yeah. What about? I am doing the all-night wake-up at the moment, but I'm also going back to sleep because a couple of few weeks ago there, I was doing my wake-up, stay-awake, and that's the worst of the worst. Yeah, I agree. And that's the only redeeming feature for me is that I'm waking up constantly and I'm going, I'm not fucking getting up.
2:31Keyzie:I'm going to go back to sleep. It may take an hour.
2:34Mike Minogue:Do you say this out loud? Yes, I do. Wakes his wife up.
2:36Keyzie:I wake up my wife and I say, you know what? This is the fifth time tonight, darling, that I've woken up. I'll be fucked if I'm getting up, though. And she'll be like, yeah, that's the fifth time you've told me.
2:46Mike Minogue:Fuck yeah. I've been going straight to sleep, right, and then being like, fuck, I need to have a really good sleep here. and then every time I've said that. Putting the pressure on yourself. Pressure and then I'll wake up middle of the night every time. No good. The other night, I was like. Just say you want to shit sleep. You trick yourself. The other night, out loud to my wife. Yeah, to your wife. Yeah, yeah. The other night, I needed a good sleep, right? And so I was fast asleep and at 4.30, the door to our garage at the end of our hallway. Unit. At the end of our unit hallway. Banana flat.
3:17Mike Minogue:At the end of our Grand Naniy flat hallway on the right is the door to our bedroom and straight ahead is the door down into the garage. Oh, you got internal access, Keeser. Internal access, mate. Ah, rich guy. Yeah, rich guy. Yeah, rich guy. At 4.30 in the morning, that door opened. It was like, ehhh. Was it Jase? It was Jase's in the garage. Because I couldn't sleep, you see, and I went, oh, might as well go over to Keeser's. It accesses house internally via the garage. And we usually lock that door. It's always locked. Right. And my wife was instantly like, someone's coming in the garage. Yeah.
3:52Mike Minogue:So I went out there nude Ready to throw down man Fucked them up too Turns out it was nothing
3:59Keyzie:It's just really bugging me It's really bugging me this whole sleep thing at the moment It's becoming an issue Alright? What time are you waking up? Does it ruin your day when you It's just I'm going to bed Really genuinely tired And it's just like What the fuck And there's nothing going on that I should be worried about or anything in particular. What time are you going to sleep? 10. Too late. It's too late for a man of your age. Is it? Yeah, 9. 9 for you, man. Yeah, but if I went to bed at 9, I'd be up at about 3 in the morning. So what time are you waking up? 5. No, usually 6, 6.30.
4:38Mike Minogue:That's pretty good. So you're going to bed at 10, going to sleep. Getting 8 and a half hours, the lazy fucker. 8 and a half, half hours, but you're waking up five times. Yes. For an hour each. For an hour each time? Yes. You're getting three hours sleep. The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast. I have to pressure my wife to go to bed because she's like, oh, she might just sit up for a bit or whatever while I'm getting ready for bed. And I say, can you haul it? Or I might have a nap during the day, like as I did the other day. And she's like, oh, having a nap, are you?
5:17It's like, well, you go to sleep. We go to bed at 9. She's asleep by one past 9. Then she sleeps completely asleep until 6.30. So she's got her nine and a half hours. I go to bed at 9. I get to sleep at 10. I wake up for about four hours during the night. So I've had no sleep.
5:35Mike Minogue:Do you ever do a bit of work in the middle of the night? I used to. Yeah. About a year ago and prior to that, before I was still getting the business up, I would literally be up probably for two to three hours a night. Was it because you were thinking of stuff? Yeah. And it's like, I might as well just fucking do it. Yeah, 100%. Because you're like, you go to bed with it on your mind, and then you wake up, and it's like, oh, fuck. And then you just got to get up and work it out. Yeah. And also, in the middle of the night, things seem way worse than they actually are, I find. Oh, yeah. Your brain, man.
6:02I had a good wake up the other week, one of those stone-cold anxiety ones. So I just go, you're a fucking idiot. Yeah. I love those. They're good. And it was absolutely nothing. Yes. And the next day, I was like, oh, my God. I've tortured myself there. Yeah. There's nothing wrong.
6:19Mike Minogue:So many people have that, though, that anxiety thing.
6:21Keyzie:In the words of Eckhart Tolle, fellas, you are not your thoughts. Yeah. All right? Your thoughts are just creating a storyline that is bullshit.
6:33Mike Minogue:Eckhart Tolle, German spiritual teacher and self-help author. But you can use it to your advantage, Jase. Yes. Because your thoughts can be bullshit, but if you make your thoughts super positive and amazing, You can create Super Jase Maxi Jizz.
6:49Keyzie:Yeah, Maxi Jizz. But apart from – I tell you what, because my wife, she had a coffee date. She had a coffee date today, so I was on my lonesome, on my city walk, and, boy, I fucking went for miles. Went down, ended up down by the water there. I bet you go about one lamppost and then you turn around and stumble home. You'd be amazed. So when you sit out and choose a route – I don't. I don't choose a route. Can you riddle me this? Yes. When you leave the house, do you have a long stick with a knapsack on the end of it and it's got your lunch and shit in it? No. And you've got like boots with no laces in them.
7:25Keyzie:But this is the joy of it is that I just go around discovering new places to eat and find coffee. I heard that you just turn up at people's doorstep and stare at their door until someone opens it. It's still freaking me out, that story. Fucking hell. So when you come out of your apartment.
7:43Mike Minogue:It's still freaking me out. When you come out of your apartment, do you traditionally turn left or right? Right. Right. Down the hill.
7:49Keyzie:Down in the city. I mean, I love K-Road, but she's a staunch walk to start the day up the hill there.
7:57Mike Minogue:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
7:58Keyzie:Which is fine. Right. It's about 300 metres. The only issue I have with K-Road is, well, I have a couple. It's a great road. Not enough sex workers, you're saying. Is that it doesn't get a lot of sun, weirdly, fellas. Right. It's often very shady and it's quite cold. Shady, all right. Oh, it's definitely shady. Have you tried going there during the day? Yes, I go there during the day, but it takes the sun a little while to get round into the street itself.
8:22Mike Minogue:Have you got those new public toilets? Have you tried those? Bloody good. Have you tried not being in the alleyways on K Road?
8:29Keyzie:Yes, but I like going the alleyways because that's when you discover cool stuff. Are the alleyways sort of all painted? Are they brick or are they sort of fleshy?
8:41Mike Minogue:Jase did you hear Mogi's question oh cool Jase isn't talking to me oh okay cool so we're just gonna all of a sudden gonna do a radio show and Jase is not gonna talk to Mogi that's cool so generally
8:54Keyzie:I go right I go right Keezy
8:57Mike Minogue:yeah right
8:58Keyzie:because what about Mogi on a day like this on a day like this right you go out the apartment door you know the apartment door I'm talking about you turn right Like, sunlight. Into the city. Into the city.
9:12Mike Minogue:And then you're at your coffee culture or whatever it is. Oh, yeah. And then do you go further? Do you go down to Key Street?
9:18Keyzie:I go right down to the bottom of town. Key Street. To the water? To the water, yes. Sometimes I go up to Ponsonby. Wow. From there? From where? From the water. Right. Up College Hill. And then walk along Ponsonby Road, down over the bridge there. And back home. Back home. Do you really? That's a good circuit. That sounds lovely. It's a good walk. So what are you doing while you walk in there? Have you got your skull candies on? I do, yeah. And you're just listening to music, or are you mulling things over, Jase? Often I'll mull things over, Moogie, but often it's Eckhart on my... Oh, is it? Yeah, but today...
9:51Keyzie:But I get a bit over Eckhart sometimes. Fucking Eckhart bangs on a bit, I tell you what. And he's, you know, he's not... You are not your thoughts, come on, mate. He's not an inspiring speaker, but... No. Today it was all tunes. Can I say, I've gotten rid of the tunes. because I was a heavy tunes and a heavy podcast listener, very, very heavy. So I've just, I lost my, this will come as a shock to you, Kesey, I lost my earbuds, my Apple earbuds. What? Well, the case in one of them. And then I just haven't replaced them. So now I'm not listening to any music walking around, and I'm also not listening to any podcasts walking around.
10:25So I'm engaging with my environment. Yes. Which is good. Yes. I'm enjoying that. Yeah, I did that a year ago. It's been great. If I want to listen to music, I'll listen to it at home. I was, you know how you have. And if I want to listen to music, I want to listen to Radio Hodecky.
10:37Keyzie:Yeah, true, man. Dot com. It was funny today because you know how you have your favourites on Spotify? Yeah. You know, your sort of favourite. And I had a fucking Tool song on there. Which one was it? Stinkfest. I'll find it for you. Or was it Hooker with a Penis? Because it was probably overheard you. Because usually, as you can imagine, fellas, the tunes I like are pretty chill. They're pretty chill. I'm not even going there. They're pretty chill. And then all of a sudden, fucking Tool's banging in there. And I was like, how the fuck? That's a fucking tune. How the fuck did that get on my list?

11:07Everybody loves hooker with a penis, man. Yeah. That is a banger.
11:10Keyzie:Wait, wait. I'll find it. Pugzone doesn't like this shit.
11:15Mike Minogue:Hey, listen to the big show. I might have deleted it. Four to seven weekdays, Radio Hauraki. I'm just going to look it up. I'll just see. Cool. Just stand by there, Pugzone. The guy just walked past with the same sunnies as Pugzone. Unironically. Yeah, unironically. Nah, Pugzone's wearing the shit out of them. Oh, here we go. Vicarious. Oh, yeah, right. Right. And can you answer Mogi's question from earlier about the alleyways? This is hookah with a penis. This is going to be my... Oh, now we're getting the audience. I don't know if we can play too much of it on the potty. Because it'll get...
11:50Yeah, it will. That'll do you. But it's a tune. People that know, they know. Yeah, sounds like a lovely wee diddy.
11:58Mike Minogue:Brick. It was a brick alleyway? Yes. Damn it. Yeah, damn it.
