In short
End-of-year “Gift Guide ’25” outro on The Hauraki Big Show, where hosts discuss Christmas gift budgeting tiers, non-stuff preferences, and practical gift ideas (especially for a 9-year-old niece). They also trade plans for the upcoming holiday week and tease the next breakfast show.
Guests
No named guests appear; it’s a host-only segment featuring Keezy, Mogi, and Pugs (plus references to Zoe from the breakfast show, not as a guest).
Key claims
People prioritize gifts by relationship value; some families “don’t buy anything” and rely on Secret Santa/Santa; one host spends “a few hundi” on partner/mum; another buys a “Cheetah” tote bag for his sister; practical gifts beat iPad time.
Notable examples
flights for mother (Auckland return); Famous Five books for niece; tote bag brand “C-I-T-T-A”; “tiered” spending amounts around $100–$150 for parents.

0:17Mike Minogue:Hello.
0:18Jason Hoyte:Hi, guys. Hi, guys. Keyzie just got his ear holes blasted off.
0:23Mike Minogue:We're in a different studio and I cannot turn these down. I can't wait. Oh, that's right. Pass me those ones. Yeah. Well, no, Jay's had this problem. yeah this is bullshit
0:30Jason Hoyte:it is what it is I think on that mic that's so cool man oh yeah at least the over air will be better than the on though yeah is that how's that
0:40Mike Minogue:nah it's still shit but that's okay man the audience doesn't care hey not long to go hey
0:45Jason Hoyte:this is what I mean by 10 minutes of this then a whole show man Mogi if I can just change your mindset on this cause I am fizzed no no I mean for Keezy with those headphones oh yeah yeah to wear them like that. There's no wider allegory about the end of the year. No, no, there's not. Oh, okay. Yeah, nice. How are you going, Keezy man? I'm going really good. Yeah? You had a good day?
1:07Mike Minogue:I was having quite a productive day. I did some Christmas shopping and started fixing this thing on my truck, which is fucking me off, and then stopped halfway through that and came into work, so. Kia ora.
1:20Jason Hoyte:Nice. How'd you go with the Christmas shopping? Did you get it done?
1:23Mike Minogue:Yes, I just need to find something for my father-in-law that's next on my list.
1:26Jason Hoyte:Actually, this is interesting. I was having this conversation with Zoe from the breakfast show. What's her name? The German princess? Zoe, yeah. And we were discussing what you're kind of, I mean, obviously everybody's different, but how you budget who gets more valuable gifts or if you kind of just go generic. Like for me personally, my partner, whom I live with, generally gets the most thoughtful present or the gift that I invest the most into and my mother as well. and then you kind of have second tier, which is my sister and my estranged, no, he's not estranged, my father. You know what I mean?
2:03Jason Hoyte:How do you guys go? We don't buy anything for anyone. Oh, nice. Well, we've got the secret Santa. The kid obviously gets the best gifts. Right. From Santa, obviously. But I don't buy, that's a point actually, because my wife and I haven't actually had the chat about us not buying anything for each other. Yeah, right. It's just occurred to me now, which is why I've written it down.
2:26Mike Minogue:So you haven't had the chat, but you're doing that. Well, that's what we always do, but I need to check in with her because if she's not doing that. And she is getting you something. And she is getting me sick. I need to know real soon. Yeah. Yeah, right. So what's that? Although I did buy her some jewellery a couple of weeks ago. Oh, Moody. So I think I'm all right. Yeah, but that was because. Yeah. Yeah. You know what you're doing. Because of April. Yeah. I mean, I know it's a little past, but it still hurts.
2:53Jason Hoyte:You've still got to make a bit of a bandaid. But I don't get my mother anything. If I get her anything, it'll be, because she lives down the Hawke's Bay, I'll get her a flight up to Auckland, a return flight up to Auckland so she can come and stay with us for a week. Yeah. So that's sort of got more value than, I mean, look. Yeah, but that's lovely. It's like, you know, let me get this for you for Christmas and we can spend some quality time. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, I think that's valuable. But rather than stuff, not big on the stuff. Yeah. My brother, nothing. Yeah. Oh, did I get my sister a gift?
3:21Jason Hoyte:Never, either. Yeah, I did. I think it was my most sophisticated year for buying gifts yet.
3:26Mike Minogue:Because you've got all that cash that you pokes on.
3:27Jason Hoyte:Yeah, it is that drive producer cash, that hodaki drive money. And that jizz boy DJ money. Jizz boy DJ money, yeah. Yeah, all that money I get from all that DJing that I do. Yeah, yeah, it's just flying in. But I went for some pretty sophisticated, I got my, hopefully she doesn't, no, she doesn't listen to this. got her this very sophisticated like tote bag because she just runs your standy work laptop bag and I'm like, come on. Can you get a sophisticated tote bag? Yeah, like it's an oversized high homeware brand one. Right. Homeware brand like Farmers or something.
4:03Mike Minogue:Briscoes.
4:04Jason Hoyte:No, like Cheetah.
4:05Mike Minogue:Cheetah.
4:06Jason Hoyte:C-I-T-T-A. Yeah, boy.
4:07Mike Minogue:Sorry about it. Yeah, don't worry about it. How much is a Cheetah tote bag?
4:09Jason Hoyte:Don't worry about it. Black Friday, baby.
4:11Mike Minogue:I bet it's fucking expensive.
4:13Jason Hoyte:It would be. Yeah, for a tote bag. Well, this is the thing. It's not a... Have you seen Amelia's one that she runs around with? The green one? No. Oh, maybe. She walks in with that massive bag. No. It's pretty much the same as that. A different colour. Anyway, unrelated. But yeah, I've gone quite fancy. What's that, man?
4:30Mike Minogue:Cheetah. It's good taste, man. My wife loves cheetah. I know she does. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
4:34Jason Hoyte:She seems like a cheetah gal.
4:35Mike Minogue:We've got these cheetah shells in our house. And she's like, even though I've screwed them to the wall, she's like, those are coming with us when we move. I'm like, we could just get some more. She's like, nah, they're coming with us. Yeah, they're cheetah. Exactly. Come on, brother. How did you spell cheetah? C-I-T-T-A. Right. The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki.
4:56Jason Hoyte:The Hauraki Big Show podcast. This is a homeware special, fellas. Get around it. That's not a plug, by the way.
5:02Mike Minogue:No, it's just really nice stuff. Yeah.
5:04Jason Hoyte:I wouldn't normally get it for myself ever.
5:06Mike Minogue:The tearing system for me, Pugs.
5:08Jason Hoyte:Yeah.
5:09Mike Minogue:My wife and I both spend a few hundi on each other. Oh. Shit, that's game of two halves money Nah, it's just two people that have been together for 15 years money That have saved That's so hot We're sensible men Yeah, pugs We don't spend all our money on drugs and Connie's Well, okay, what if I want to get drugs for a gift? 100 % That's a few hundy And we can enjoy it together Sorry about it Yeah On that bloody dry producer, Jizzboy DJ money DJ Jizzboy And then my mum and dad probably get a gift worth between 100 and 150 each
5:42Jason Hoyte:Yeah, lovely
5:43Mike Minogue:Same for Lucy's parents Yeah Then my brother will get a gift from me With his birthday Second of Jan though So he gets a Christmas present Worth about a hundred bucks And then a birthday present Worth a combined 150 Yeah
5:54Jason Hoyte:Maybe 200 Yeah see It's interesting hearing the tearing system Like obviously everybody's money's different So But it's interesting seeing How people Prioritise Putting their Christmas money Into certain gifts Of certain people
6:06Mike Minogue:I don't think about it anymore I'm at the point now Where if I see something That I think is good I'll just get it Yeah Like within reason You know
6:12Jason Hoyte:My niece I go pretty hard for because I don't have to buy from any kids. Yeah. And also I'm sick of her being on her iPad, so I get something that's like, you know, so practical. How old is she? She's nine. Right. And she's always on that fucking iPad. I've never felt more like a boomer than when I've gone home to my sister's house and she's there and she's still on the iPad. And I'm like, why don't we do something? Why don't we do some colouring or something? And I'm trying to find, I've got, do you guys ever, do you know what Goosebumps books are? Yeah, the R.L. Stine. I used to collect them and I had about 65 of them.
6:42Jason Hoyte:Oh, God. Granddad's getting his books out. I was obsessed with that. And she's at the exact age where I started getting into it. And I'm like, I've got to find these fucking books. Because I've got to keep the reading alive in this girl before she gets obsessed with the iPad. My sister got all the Famous Five books. I was about to say Famous Five. Yeah, so we're working through those. And she absolutely loves them. So those are a good thing to get. She was showing me yesterday. There's about 21 of them. She was showing me yesterday at the office. Right.

7:09Mike Minogue:Yeah. Yeah, she's stoked. Don't they always eat lashings of ginger ale? It's very old-fashioned writing. It's funny because f***ing always read old-fashioned books. I can't remember what the origin is. My kid has always read really old-fashioned books for some reason, so she always has talked with a real ye olde sort of style, which has gotten better since she started school. But yes. Because she was quite Dickensian there for a wee bit. Dickensian, she was. What is that? Top hat. She's like, ahoy. Is that a thing? No. Ahoy. Ahoy. She was also a sailor. Yeah.
7:51Yes. One more sleep, fellas. Keen. I was just saying, Keesy, that I'm meant to be going, working today, obviously. Breakfast show, drive show, frank party tomorrow. Frank drinks. It's not really a party. Right. Hell yeah. and then the next day, the next morning, driving to Hamilton to see family. The next day, staying with mates in Taupo. The next day, going to Wellington for a week. But I've just said to the missus, let's take a couple of days off before we go anywhere. That'd be good. Just a bit of a...
8:24Mike Minogue:Yeah, right. Nothing days. You'll end up doing shit, though. Just take a bit of a breath. Well, we'll clean the house, which is great. So you come home to a clean house with clean sheets. Do a bit of work. Get the laptop out. Get the lappy out. But yeah, that'll be good. Nice. This weekend I have Saturday Pugs is for cleaning the house. Yeah. And packing our bags. That's what Saturday is for. Pack your bags. It's Saturday evening, I believe like six o 'clock or something. Don't stick that in there. We fly to Christchurch.
8:55Jason Hoyte:Yeah.
8:56Mike Minogue:And then it's golf, drinks, golf, drinks, golf, drinks, golf, drinks. Fly home to Auckland, go to Cook's Beach.
9:02Jason Hoyte:You guys are on, brother.
9:05Mike Minogue:Fucking hell, man.
9:06Jason Hoyte:For me, it's...
9:07Mike Minogue:I don't want to drink this much piss that I'm about to drink. It's going to be nonstop. Yeah.
9:10Jason Hoyte:Breakfast and drive tomorrow. Drinks with a mate after.
9:14Mike Minogue:What are you doing? What time's after?
9:16Jason Hoyte:Well, after drive. Yeah, right. Saturday, house party and a friend staying at our place.
9:22Mike Minogue:Fucking hell, house party this late December. I know, I know.
9:24Jason Hoyte:This guy's invited like 75 people and I'm so keen. It looks fun. I don't know how hard I'll go because Sunday I'll probably have to do some work just on some bits and pieces that need tidying up. Sure, sure, sure. And then my partner leaves to go to Hawke's Bay, where she's from, for her family time and family Christmas. Then Monday, work, hair, tidy everything up, get everything sorted for the holidays. Oh, really? Just to keep the people fed. Yep, yep. Tuesday, possible haircut in the morning at my mate's house. He's getting it done. He's doing a private home session for me, fellas. Nice. Bang, on the road to Welly.
9:58Jason Hoyte:How long are you there for? Straight to Welly. In Welly? maybe like three days leave on Boxing Day for Hawke's Bay catch up with the catch up with the partner why are your faces you couldn't see me I was working it out you couldn't see my mouth moving I was actually oh I see what you're saying and then yeah Hawke's Bay for Boxing Day boom couple of days there come back on like the 28th because then on the 29th boom festy time up north jizz DJ boy DJ jizz boy on the beat pretty much it's going to be epic Are you excited for breakfast tomorrow, Pugs? You're going to kill it, man. I genuinely am fizzing.
10:35Jason Hoyte:I think it's going to be hard, so I'm excited. What do you mean hard? What? What do you mean? It's going to be hard. It's breakfast, man. It's early morning. Yeah. Like, I'm shit. You're not a morning guy. I'm a shocker when I've had a great sleep. Right. So you can imagine how I am when I... I think my threshold is less than... If I go less than seven or less than six, I'm like a write-off. So you probably, you doing breakfast in the future, probably not an option. No, I just want to, don't consider me for any breakfast options. Good to know. Nah. It's good to know. I'll let Toddy know. No, I just mean in general.
11:09Jason Hoyte:And also because it's a one-off, my sleep will be shit. And also I had a shit sleep last night because old mate gets at a bloody 3am. So yeah. So good. Absolutely fizzing.
11:20Mike Minogue:That's good stuff there, pug son. I'm fizzing. I can't wait to listen, man. It's going to be great.
11:24Jason Hoyte:For often. Hey, look, Casey, look, if you're really fizzing.
11:27Mike Minogue:Yeah. I'm going to be setting my alarm. What I'll do is I'll set my alarm for 5.30 a.m. Well, if you're already up. Set my alarm for 5.30 a.m., and then that way I can sort of wake up, have a coffee, and then listen from six sharp. I reckon listen to the podcast, man. No, I want to listen to it live. That's a good shout, actually. Actually, what I might do is hop in my car because it's got the best stereo. The signal at my house is shit. I might park outside work in my car, 6 a.m. sharp. Don't wait outside in the cold, man.
11:53Jason Hoyte:Come in and sit. Come on and get a coffee anyway. Just in the office there. Come on and get an instant coffee and then go back out to the car.
11:59Mike Minogue:Look, guys, I don't want to interrupt your flow and you and Mogey got a good thing going there. We got a great thing going.
12:04Jason Hoyte:Don't get me wrong, Keezy, but I just, you know,
12:06Mike Minogue:But make sure you listen to it. Obviously, the big show, 407 weekdays and Brekkie tomorrow morning, 6am till 9am with old Pugs on. Love you, guys. It's going to be so good.
12:15Jason Hoyte:Have we got one more outro? And that's it. Oh, this is your last outro.
12:17Mike Minogue:Yeah, man. This is it. See you later. Bye. It's been a fucking good one too. Merry Christmas.
12:25Thank you.
