In short

A “haircut special” outro on The Hauraki Big Show, focused on Chris/Keezy’s fresh haircut, barber choices, and how different barbers’ styles and small talk affect the result.

Guests

No named guests appear as interviewees; the “guests” are the hosts’ friends/barbers mentioned in conversation.

Guest backgrounds

Adam Fanua Keezy (called “Legend”; barber/road acquaintance); Jim (legendary barber); Julian (boss barber); Luke (fast barber); Sue and Harriet (barbers; Sue is a “waz chat” fan; Harriet is a thorough, neat barber).

Key claims

Keezy is “thrilled” with the haircut; it’s better value because more was taken off; he prefers a longer front/bowl shape and thinks the fade is “high” but “not too high.”

Notable examples

Adam’s Tauranga car “Fusion sound systems” story; Keezy’s “Brad Pitt Fight Club” photo request; mirror/hand-through styling habits; switching barbers due to availability and guilt; Maloney’s and Rory’s Barbershop plugs.

0:00Jason Hoyte:It's my first time using a microphone.

0:02Mike Minogue:Probably drop the arm down if you don't want to hold it like that. Oh, true. It's Friday, man.

0:07Jason Hoyte:I'm in a fucking... No, not at all. Not even a little bit. Okay, here we go. For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok or Raw Doggy. 4 to 7 every weekday on Radio Hoda Aircast. Old fresh lid Keezy in the house. Oh, come on, man. Faded up. Everything's faded up. Yeah, faded up the wazoo. I've never seen you more faded up in my life. That's the most faded looking lid I've ever seen on you. Drank. Brother. Head shellers. It looks all G, though, right? Shout out to your boy over the road there. Adam. Adam.

0:45Mike Minogue:Fanua Keezy. Fanua Keezy, they call him. Legend, actually. This is probably the happiest I've been with a haircut. Really? Really? Yeah. Because every time I go and ask for the same thing, it's like a tube fade on the back and sides, then take like a centimetre off the top and kind of just mess it up. I liked your last one more. Did you? Yeah, me too. It was distinctly great. Really? Really good.

1:04Jason Hoyte:I like this. It's a different look. But I also think you've gotten better value here, Keezy, because you've taken more off. You've gotten better value for your money, man. What don't you like about it? Is it too short? I don't not like it. There's nothing I don't. No, no, no. But I like the other one more. I prefer the longer one in the front.

1:18Mike Minogue:So pugs. It's got a bit of bowl about it. You know the bowl sitting on the forehead cutting around the front? The way he styled it. He needs a bit of a... Yeah, yeah, the way he started it. He needs a finger at Keezer. You know what's up. But he knows. He's the Skucky barber guy. But that's a funny thing, isn't it? You sit there and you're thinking, really? That's how you're going to leave it? That's not how it goes, man. I looked at it and I thought, hell yeah. But it does make you think, maybe I've got it wrong. If you think that this is what makes it look good, and I can't wait to fucking run my hand through it, maybe I'm wrong.

1:45Jason Hoyte:I always run my hand through it when I leave the barber shop. I do it in there now. I'm at the age now where I do it in their fucking face. After they've still held it, you redo it? like a little, you know, just stand up in the mirror and just, you know. A zhuzh, if you will. A little zhuzh. A zhuzh. They know. Yeah, right. Because you go in there looking like a sack of shit. They don't know what it's meant to look like.

2:02Mike Minogue:I always go in there looking terrible. Yeah. But seriously, pugs, and I'm not, this isn't like me being insecure or anything. What, what do you think my hair should be longer?

2:11Jason Hoyte:What matters is that you love it. Listen to this, bro. Fucking answer the fucking question.

2:14Mike Minogue:Dude, the main thing, bro, is that you're happy. Is that you're happy. I mean. No, no, because I want to know. Honestly, man, are you happy? Yeah. I'm fucking thrilled. Well let me put it to you this way You should be Okay so I know Moggy's view is that my front should be a bit longer I just want to know your opinion I can't remember what it was last time

2:34Jason Hoyte:I think for me I'm looking at it through a lens of my own here Which is I don't go for the fade up as much And yours because yours is as faded up as it is comparatively In the last one I prefer the shaggier Is it too high? No it's not too high It's pretty high It's a bit high It's high Yeah, it's quite high. But it's not too high. I don't think in a bad way. I like it. Yeah, right.

2:57Mike Minogue:So what would you ask for then if you had my head? A hat. If I had your head. A hat. A hat? Like a beanie. Yeah, see, if I had yours, I'd ask for a paper bag of some sort. I said the same thing. Come on. Come on, man. What do you reckon? What would you ask? Because what do I... Am I asking for... When I ask for a two... A refund. You should ask for a refund. A refund. When I ask for like a two, they just fade it. You know what I mean? But it looks good. Yeah. Is it... Oh, are you saying you're not asking for a fade? Oh, it's definitely not a fade. That's not a two. Actually, no, maybe I must. That's a one into a two.

3:29It's a zero in the back into a two, yeah.

3:32Jason Hoyte:The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast. Can I actually turn around? Yeah, look. Oh, shit. Moggy. I think the issue I've got, too. Can you turn around, man? Have a gaze. I haven't seen the back So Mike's just getting up to take a photo of the back of Chris's dome piece Here we go So he can see it Did he not hold up the mirror for you?

4:02Mike Minogue:Yeah he did Did he actually tilt your head forward a little bit?

4:06Jason Hoyte:Yeah nice Alright now get on all fours Yeah okay And look over your shoulder So you can see that's gone from like a zero Like a skin fade almost Yeah yeah it's all G though It's a zero Yeah yeah I reckon that's all G

4:19Mike Minogue:You're a fucking hero, bro. Well, thank you. Hey? Hey, that's nice. You don't get bad haircuts, Kesey. Nah. And you vary them up a lot. Yes. Proud of you, man. Do you know what's funny? I do vary them up a lot. However, do you know what the reason why it's so varied? It's because I have two barbers and I feel bad about switching. Because I have this guy, Jim, who's a legend. Great guy. However, while he was away, I got Adam. Turns out we both grew up in the same place in Tauranga, like a few years apart. And so the whole time we're chatting about all this classic Tauranga shit. Like today we were talking about how Do you remember the Fusion sound systems in cars?

4:53Mike Minogue:Fusion with a green alien And he was talking about how he used to roll around In his mate's dad's Ford Explorer on 22s With a Fusion alien in the back It's a personality thing man But like Jim's the man Jim's got shit chat is what you're saying No Jim's got great chat It's just all of a sudden And so I feel bad so I keep alternating now And so my hair looks different every time Mine I go with Julian over there He's the boss He seems like a good fella He's great. He's a good man. Yeah. And sort of my age sort of thing, a few years older than me. Yeah. And I would have gone with him, but I went to book in the other day, because we're on the same sort of timetable, Keezy, you and I.

5:30Same week. That's so cool. Do you mind, man? What's that, bro? Me and Keezy are talking, brother. Do you mind? We're talking fucking lives, bro. I go fuck myself. That's all G. And he was unavailable. Right. He was blocked out on the Fresher app. Yeah. And then I went in there and he was there. I was like, you're joking. I said, you were. Did you hit him up? And he goes, oh, yeah, I got back last night. I was like, well, you were blocked out for the next week and a half. And then I got the haircut from Luke and I was like, pretty good. Pretty good.

6:01Mike Minogue:This is the issue. Pretty good, pretty quick. But now Julian. But he was straight into, Luke was straight into Waz chat. Great. But it felt like he was just serving me up some Waz chat. Oh, because you're old Mogey. It felt like he was. It was. It was like that. It was like, he was like, it was almost exactly like that. How about them along those lines? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And that wasn't that it was a bad chat, but I felt like he was serving me up some barber chat. He was trying to cater to you and just like, hey, this guy, you know, he's clearly. Well, hey, it's like you racially profiled me. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

6:35It's like, oh, because Luke is Tongan. He was watching Tonga versus, we're watching Tonga versus Japan.

6:43Mike Minogue:And I was talking to them today about Tonga versus Kiwis coming up. There you go. Yeah, and he was saying he's not going. Yeah, right. Yeah, so he was like. He was like, oh, this guy's white, late 40s. Yeah. He'll definitely be into the whas. And he was right. But that doesn't make it right. No, I know. He's just catering to you, man. But I guess this is a great thing, and shout out to Maloney's over here. They're all good barbers. What do you think I do, though, right? Because I really like gym, and I was going to gym for like a year. Yeah. and then you had Adam and then we've just had these it's just bizarre that we're chatting about stuff I grew up with I was talking to Jim about it, he's glad to be rid of you Really?

7:20Yeah, just on the down low

7:22Mike Minogue:Because I'm massively overthinking it and now, like Sir Julian for example next time you go back in, who are you going to go with? It's tricky, I'm going to sit them all down and say you guys all got to lift your game I need your chat I need your cut and I need your speed Oh so Luke's really fast So there's different speeds You see? But I did take in a photo this time round Of Brad Pitt in Fight Club Just his abs His head was cut off He was wearing a hat I was like, make me look like this But he fucking nailed it And then of course you've got Sue Yeah, who's a mad bastard And she's an absolute weapon for the waz She loves the waz But that's legit Effing and jeffing at your waz chat Fired up Yeah, filthy about it.

8:10Waz chat.

8:11Mike Minogue:So today I walked past and she was on the top floor and I walked past outside and all she saw was a guy in a Waz hat. So she came down the stairs. She's like, oh, I literally came down just to see who the guy in the Waz hat was. Yeah, she's a psychopath. She's like, oh, it's just you. And I was like, yeah. Just you. Yeah, because we talked about the Waz a lot. Oh, cheesy. And just hoping it might be like a new person to chat to about Waz. Yeah. And then there's Harriet the Pom. I've never had her haircut before. Great haircut as well. And different kind of chat. because I used to go to a place near my house and the people are all really good hair cutters.

8:42Mike Minogue:And then... Hair cutters. Barbers. The best was this chick. The chick was so good. She was like really... And you couldn't believe it, eh? Mogi. She was like really thorough and like just really neat. Do you know what I take from that? Takes too long. Attention to detail. No, but it's the full half an hour. But the problem was the other guy that is now there, he'll cut you here in 15 minutes and be like, cool, bro, see you. And it's like, and I get home and it looks kind of like what I asked for and just a bit shit.

9:09Jason Hoyte:Yeah. Half an hour. Is that the full for you guys?

9:12Mike Minogue:Yeah.

9:12Jason Hoyte:All right. I'm 45 minutes.

9:14Mike Minogue:Yeah, but you got more here.

9:16Jason Hoyte:I go to your mates around the corner. Yes. And my best mate works there. That's right. Rory's. Yeah. And I got a weird comment from my partner the other day because he works there and I never go to him and I go to another guy. Right. Because my mate is always booked out to the point, past the point where I can organise my time. Well, they're right around. So Rory came from, he used to be at Maloney's. Origin story. Ah, there you go. And then he's still up. And I would love to go there as well. The reason why I don't is same thing, booked up. So booked, so in demand. Business is going great. And I always make my decisions really late.

9:51I just decide I need a haircut right now. And then the other thing is because Maloney's is over the road from work and also over the road from the gym, I go haircut, gym, shower, work. Aye. Get all the little Lucy hair bits off. Because if I do haircut work around at Rory's, it's like, I don't like having hair on me.

10:10Mike Minogue:So you go gym. Gym. Whereas I'm going from gym to Adam. You are. Yeah, I'm switching. Yeah, boy. I love it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, that's nice, man. That's really good. But anyway, good luck. Great, actually, can I say, two great local businesses. But they've been going for ages old. Maloney's over there, Auckland Institution. Give me a haircut there if you haven't been. Full free plug Like no They're just great They are They're just awesome Every single one of them Every single person You walk in there They're all great chat They're all really Yeah they all do a good job I love it

10:36Jason Hoyte:And if you don't want to go there I'm going to plug Rory's Yeah that's right I agree I agree as well Liam's the man Rory Antonio Rory's Barbershop

10:45Mike Minogue:Oh right that's in Ponce By Mike your place Yeah right in the corner there Oh there you go Hey listen to the big show Potty Wait no you are Listen to the radio show man I'm going to get some sushi Yeah go get some sushi man I've got to work on my video. Sushi men.

10:59Jason Hoyte:I did not talk for so much then. It was not my barber.

11:04Mike Minogue:Bye. See ya.
