In short

New Year’s special banter about whether to set expectations/resolutions, and how to “influence” the year through actions; plus plans for New Year’s Day/Eve and holiday logistics around Auckland/Waiheke and Cooks Beach.

Guests

No formal guests; it’s a roundtable with hosts/regulars “Moggy,” “Mogi,” “Kesey,” and “Pugs” (Pugson). Pugs is a musician/DJ who’ll attend a festival to see the Black Seeds and play gigs up north; he mentions his daughter Millie attending his festival gig.

Key claims

Don’t rely on magic optimism; resolutions aren’t magic but can guide effort (e.g., learning songs). Avoid/skip “Connie’s” (drinking/partying) as a personal resolution.

Notable examples

learning 10 songs; writing poetry on a typewriter; Cooks Beach batch stay (27 Dec–4 Jan), golf/ambrose, wineries, and a possible Corrigley gig; festival Black Seeds; spare-room offer for an overnighter.

0:00Keyzie:Let's watch the old year die with a fond goodbye and our hopes as high as a kite. How can our love go wrong if we start the new year right? Oh, happy new year. How did that? Bitter bing. Bing Crosby, man. Bitter bing. Bitter bing Crosby.

0:23Mike Minogue:Hey, nice of you fellas to join me in driving to the studio to do a New Year's pod. Oh, New Year's, yeah. Are your hopes as high as a kite for this upcoming year, like Bing? Now, Bing's obviously dead now. But a Bing. But a douche, douche, douche. You know, I've got to be honest with you, Moggy.

0:42Keyzie:I've decided to stop doing that. Stop doing what? Doing the, this is going to be a great year ahead. Did you used to do that? Yeah, I actually did. I used to be like, no, this is going to be a fucking great year. There you go, man. Now it's just like, it's going to be the year it's going to be, all right? I'm not going to put expectations on it. Sure. Hopefully it's a great year.

1:01Mike Minogue:But you can also go, this is going to be a great year. You can say it's going to be a great year. And if there's things that you want to be to make it great, you can actually have some influence on it. For example, let's say you said you were going to learn an album, learn 10 songs. So you could put the work into it so at the end of the year you go, look at me, I learned those 10 songs and what a great year it was. Yeah, totally. It's like that. Yeah, yeah. I guess it's not magic.

1:25Keyzie:No. No. But, you know, for me it's in the range of, God, that dude just played with his balls. We're doing a New Year's special podcast

1:36Mike Minogue:and Jase is commentating a guy out the window.

1:39Keyzie:Well, it was just so obvious. It's in the same vein as New Year's resolutions for me. And it's like I'm not doing those either. What about you're not doing your no smoking, man, your no vaping? You should do that.

1:50Mike Minogue:Nah. Isn't it interesting because... It feels like a curse. 365 days ago, your resolution was learn to play the keyboard and go out more often.

1:59Keyzie:Yes. Well, I'm doing one of those.

2:01Mike Minogue:Really? More often?

2:03Keyzie:Yeah, definitely going out more often. And can I also add, fellas, that I'm tapping away on my old typewriter every day too. Are you doing that every day? Yes, I am. What are you writing exactly? Poetry, but also that idea I talked to you about. How long ago was that idea? The family dinner. Oh, yes. Good on you. Just a good screenwriter. Yeah, good. Just having a bit of a tootsie with that. Yes. I like it. So, yeah, you know, tap, tap. Well, it's a very good idea that – well, we have to talk about it a lot for you. New Year's, am I right? Yeah. Hey! Yeah. What will Mogi be doing on New Year's?

2:38New Year's Day. I don't know where I'm going to be. I'm hoping that I'm going to be over – and she'll be listening to this. She'll be listening to this. But the decision will have been made by now. But my cousin still lives over on Mwahiki. Yes. Oh. So I've said to her, I still remember seeing you out the window, actually. You and the missus. Yeah. And a daughter or two going past out our window while I was doing the dishes. And I shouted out, I went, Hoity J. He just annoyed me. He annoyed you? He annoyed me. Oh, wow. I pretended not to hear him, Keesy. He didn't know his name was Hoity J at that stage.

3:11Mike Minogue:He's on holiday, right? He's on leave. He's on leave. And so when he's on leave, we're not friends. Yeah, we don't know him. So anyway, that place is going to be available from the 27th until the 3rd. Nice. But her new partner, she's got a new partner that she lives with there, she's already offered it, apparently they've offered it, to his brother and his brother's girlfriend. Now they've got no fucking right going on here. The new partner's brother. The new partner's brother. But you've been around, no, that's pretty interesting. I've been around forever. Now the problem is, of course, if it's already been offered, there's nothing you can do.

3:42Now, I might be on the beach, man. I might be on Waiheke. Or she's chosen the partner's brother and the girlfriend over me. That's a disgrace. Who brought her into my house on Waiheke, and I am the reason why she's living over there now.

3:58Mike Minogue:Right. But the issue is, at the point where they invited the partner's brother and stuff, you weren't in the picture. The offer wasn't, oh, should we take these guys or these guys at the same time? Yeah. I've come in late, to be fair. You've come in late. If I get rejected, I'm fine with that. But I really hope that I'm over there. Yes. Because I love it over there. It's beautiful. I love the food. I love the weather. I love the ocean. So I don't really want to go anywhere. And I love the fact that I don't have to drive anywhere. Yes. That's what I hope. Yeah, nice. If not, though, you'll just be way at home doing a bit of work?

4:29No, I won't be at home. Doing a bit of work. The funny thing is, Keezy, I could very well be working all the way through. But I hope I'm doing that. or we've found this other place up north that we might go to. I've got to look into it, actually, even though today is New Year's Day.

4:46Mike Minogue:Oh, is it New Year's Day? I'm not sure what I'm doing. Is it New Year's Day today or is it New Year's Eve? Oh, hey, up to you guys. If it's New Year's Eve and I'm over there, I'll have a few beers probably. But it's just going to be me, the missus, and my kid. Yeah, nice. So it's going to be pretty boring. Will you? I mean, great.

5:01Keyzie:The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show Podcast I'm kind of going to run down of your holidays there, Kesey Will you be at Cooks Beach by the stage?

5:15Mike Minogue:Yes, so Mania and his partner and myself and my wife We will be at a batch in Cooks Beach from the 27th of December to the 4th of Jan So just a week So this place we booked They have a seven night minimum over that period to stop you just having for two nights having a party and leaving. And we were like, oh, shit, that's ages. But then we were like, hang on, that's great. Yeah, fuck it. A week in Cooks and Beats. Stuff it, let's do it. Yeah, it's good. And it stops them having to have multiple cleanings. Yeah. And so we're going to be like, there's a few nice wineries around there. There's heaps of nice restaurants.

5:51Mike Minogue:We go to the beach every day. We're going to play a bit of golf with the girls, a bit of Ambrose. Nice. Couple v. couple, which will be fun. It's going to be chill. Yeah, nice, man. And to be honest, New Year's Eve, me and I will probably start drinking at like 10 a.m. and... Not see Midnight. Nah, we'll see Midnight. Oh, will you? You'll be able to do it. I think there's a gig at the Corrigley in Catchafire playing Daily J and a couple of other bands. Catchafire, holy hecka. Yeah, yeah, which is a band. They are a new album. Yeah, which is a band that I fucking loved when I was a teenager. And Minaita's too, so we'll see how we go.

6:20Mike Minogue:I haven't got tickets for that yet, but I'll probably be able to get some. Yeah, sure. So that's what I'll be doing.

6:23Keyzie:Being a top radio DJ, you mean.

6:25Mike Minogue:Well, I was thinking of purchasing some, but yeah, up to you.

6:28Keyzie:I have no idea. I have literally no idea what I'll be doing.

6:33Mike Minogue:But the thing is, you can influence this.

6:34Keyzie:Yes, I can. And my wife and I are investigating various things, but it's all to do with girls and where they are and all that sort of stuff. Well, they won't be with you on New Year's Eve, right? Your youngest might be. No, no. They're going to a lot of gigs. Yeah, I don't think anyone, even your youngest will be. Oh, no, she might be hanging out with us.

6:53Mike Minogue:Hey, tell you what, we've got the batch we've booked has got a spare room. Okay. Why don't you, your wife and your young one come and you can stay in the spare room? I reckon Minara and Jess will be stoked with that.

7:06Keyzie:Yeah, nah. But we are looking for sort of little overnighters, but we've left it very late, so we're very easy with what happens. It's true, isn't it? You know, and we may be moving or something like that. I don't know. I'm intrigued. I'm intrigued as to what we'll be doing. Hey, if anybody out there is too late. Damn it.

7:27Mike Minogue:It's already New Year's, man. I'll talk about it tomorrow. On the 2nd of Jan. On the 2nd, yeah. Yeah, yeah, cool. I'm going to guess what you're going to be doing. You're going to be at your house.

7:37Keyzie:Quite possibly, yes.

7:39Mike Minogue:Yeah, I reckon you'll be at your house.

7:40Keyzie:My wife and I aren't really into the big New Year's Eve thing. Oh, no, who is? We often go to bed at like nine. Yeah, yeah. Fuck that shit.

7:50Mike Minogue:It's just like for us it's literally a stay up till midnight. You've been drinking all day in the sun and doing stuff. Yes. And then once the midnight happens, you're asleep by like 12.30. Yeah. Unless you're getting into the extracurricular stuff. You'll be in up to the curriculars all day.

8:04Keyzie:You'll be doing that. You'll be all right, Keasy. I don't know what you're talking about. You'll be just hammering. Oh, no, I'm not going to say that. I'm not Pugs, son. Yeah, no, that's true. He's a shocking bastard. I mean, we all know what he'll be doing. What do you reckon Pugs will be doing for now? Well, we know what he's going to be doing. What's that? He'll be at some festival, won't he? Is that right?

8:19Mike Minogue:Pugs, what are you doing for now? Yeah, probably, actually. Feel free to come in. Yeah, come in, man. Oh, don't come in here, man. Don't come in? No, you're all doing for New Year's, mate. Happy New Year's, guys. Thanks for having me. Happy New Year's, Pugs. No, all good. Luckily, I was just up north there a little bit, so it was easy for me to get back. I'm not too far away. Yeah, good. All going well. I'll be at a festival, going to see the Black Seeds. Oh, yes, that's right. And also, I can probably say it now, but I'm playing a gig, a couple of gigs over that time as well up north. Right, so you're going to use this opportunity to plug those gigs?

8:53Mike Minogue:It's too late. No, because they will have already happened. Oh, right, you've played a couple of gigs. I've been playing a couple of gigs, guys. At the festival he's going to be at.

9:00Keyzie:I think my daughter Millie's going to be at that gig, actually, Pugson. At my gig? No, at the festival. Yeah, the festival. Do you want to tell her to come to my gig?

9:08Mike Minogue:Well, hang on, this gig's already happened. Oh, no, she's...

9:11Keyzie:Yeah, sorry there, she had a ball, man, it was awesome. Yeah, yeah. We were hanging out. She really liked you. Until she saw you play. But can I just say, this particular daughter, that is a massive fucking compliment because she doesn't like anyone. We got on, man. When we met last time. You've all got the same wacky tattoos and shit.

9:32Mike Minogue:But yeah, a couple of gigs on the beach and then hanging out with a few friends at this new festival that started up last year. Nice. How many Connies have you taken?
