In short
The hosts wrap up “Hauraki Hardcore” with banter about returning to work, upcoming breakfast-show reshuffles, and a proposed extreme new radio format (Filth and Rage / “Hauraki Hardcore”) featuring hardcore music and a “thromber” vote that would “execute” artists/bands by banning them from the playlist.
Guests
None. The episode is an in-studio conversation among regular hosts: Mogi, Jase, Keezy, Pugs, and mentions Mania (as a breakfast-show co-host) and “Jeff” (a colleague whose job Mogi covered).
Key claims
Breakfast radio comes with a “breakfast tax” (~extra 200K); coffee can cause nausea for one host; Rage/Metallica are risky for mornings; the new segment idea is “band vs band” with audience voting.
Notable examples
Jamiroquai vs Rage Against the Machine/Metallica; “Learning to fly” (Tom Petty discussion); “Green Day” and “Foo Fighters” as hypothetical “executions.”

G'day Mogi, how you going? Oh g'day Jase, how are you? Yeah good thanks mate. Didn't think you were talking to me. Oh no, I was talking to you, all of you.
0:23Mike Minogue:Have you given Mogi the silent treatment? Not at all. You're angry because I went away man. Not at all. It's okay man, I'm back now.
0:29Keyzie:No, I'm stoked for you that you did. I'd never be angry about that sort of stuff. Jeez, it was relaxing, I tell you what. Yeah. What'd you do? Oh, I worked.
0:39Mike Minogue:You're joking. The other thing is that I worked, I kind of forgot, but the timing was good. Somebody who is at our work went away for the week. Oh, yes. So I got to do her job as well as my job and have the kid. But it was good. It was a good week. You love the radio, don't you? But, Jason, you'll know this because you've had a fuckload of time off lately. Excuse the language while I've got my kid in the room, if you don't mind, Casey. Yeah, I keep forgetting that, so I have to give myself a wrap on the night.
1:05Keyzie:I was effing at Jeff before the show there. She's pretty tuned into Smurfs, thankfully. Cool. But you know what it's like, Jase, when you have a long time off. Yeah. You become accustomed to having your afternoons free. You do. It's quite nice. It is quite nice. It's quite nice. It almost feels like you just want to do breakfast.
1:22Mike Minogue:Well, the other thing you're forgetting, Mogi, is that it's quite nice having your mornings free as well, which is what we currently have except for you've got two jobs. Yeah. So I spent my morning painting a fence. Well, I'm sort of up at 5.30 anyway, you see. Yeah. To be honest, I loved doing breakfast Thursday, Friday. It is brilliant. I was on the road in my truck heading to Tauranga at 10 a.m. Yeah. Rules. Because I heard you've been agitating for a change. Yeah, massively. I've been doing a lot of things.
1:50Keyzie:Christ, he wouldn't have shut up about it.
1:51Mike Minogue:Oh, wouldn't he?
1:53Keyzie:He was just banging on. and he was giving me, you know, what's going to happen in the future here. And he, you know, he was telling me. He was sort of drawing out the terms and how things might progress. Yeah, well, he was telling me about the new breakfast show and how it's going to be structured and who's going to be on it and all this sort of stuff. I was like, wow, okay. We weren't there, by the way. Yeah. I thought Pugs' idea of calling it the late night first thing in the morning big breakfast was a bit on the nose, though, because as you were saying, that name is used.
2:19Mike Minogue:No, the name he came up with was Late Night Bouja Breakfast. And I was like, mate, what are you trying to do here with Lee Hart? What are you trying to do here, man? That already existed. So it's just a breakfast show with just Lee on it. That's right. And I think there's some value in that, but I don't see how we fit into it.
2:35Keyzie:Yeah, sure. Look, there's things that need to be sorted out for me re-breakfast. Absolutely suits my time frame. Yes. Look, I wake up early anyway. Jase. To be fair. Mate, I've already told you the plans. It's an hour earlier than I would probably normally wake up. About an hour earlier. In terms of having to be somewhere, you're sort of raking up around that 6 o 'clock hour as opposed to being on air at a 6 o 'clock hour. Exactly. I've got to sort my coffee conundrum out there because I find when I do breakfast, I get nauseous because I'm drinking too much coffee. Just don't drink coffee. I'll tell you what else happened to me.
3:15Keyzie:It really interfered with my morning ablution.
3:18Mike Minogue:I think, honestly, between that and figuring out your coffee, You're not cut out for breakfast radio. Think about the fact you'll be on an extra 200K a year. I think you can make it work. Oh, I can make it work, sure. Instantly they go, oh, what, you're getting up early? Boom, 200K. Yeah, yeah. They just throw it at you.
3:32Keyzie:They call it the breakfast tax. They do.
3:35Mike Minogue:Yeah. Like Mania, he was already on like 300, 400K, and they were like, oh, you're going to be on breakfast? Boom, 200K, here you go.
3:42Keyzie:I mean, Mania and - They also say boom.
3:45Mike Minogue:They do. They go boom. Boom.
3:46Keyzie:Mania and Jeremy are already on more money before they even get to work than we are.
3:52Mike Minogue:100%. Easily. Because I know Jerry's on about 1.7. Yes. And with him, they were like, oh, another year doing brekkie. Boom, 300k. Yes, that's right. Yeah, they're creaming it. But I did listen to you guys last week. I've got notes, obviously, but overall pretty good. Yeah. It's a lot more work though, isn't it? You come back after the one song there. It is, but. And who won the throbber? Me.
4:15Keyzie:Mogi. Now, what did you have? I had comfortably shagged. Yeah, I heard it and I heard your other songs. I had to turn the radio off and go do something. I thought, Jase has got this one in the back. Yeah, I did. Very comfortably. A couple of shitters from the boys. Yeah, it was.
4:29Mike Minogue:You guys don't know that whatever song. I've got a few messages. I know that song. Yeah, he used to be, he was a comedian. Was he? Yeah, he was, yeah. And that was his one and only song. And not that he was a one-hit wonder. It was his one and only song. Really, his only song? So he did pretty well. But yeah, he was an alt comedian back in the day. Used to watch him a lot. He had a TV show on Shree 4, I think, back in the day. And then Pugs, what was your song, man? Jamiroquai. Jamiroquai. Now, what I really loved about that one is you guys accused him of being too coast, and he got massively offended by that.
5:04But you guys were absolutely spot on. Jamiroquai was, well, I mean. Pugs has just blasted me with a no in my ears, but I think, did he get any votes? No.
5:17Keyzie:I think what happened is that's what you would call breakfast delirium. Yes, he's off his head of breakfast. He just had no idea what was going on. That's Pugs on strain away from what he does well. And for me, what I did well was Rage and Metallica. That was my wheelhouse. That's where I got my votes. Now, Pugs has gone Yummy Boys. Oh, he's fully Yummy Boys. And he thought he would deviate into a bit of, he thinks that the magic is Pugs, but it's not. It's the Yummy Boys. So he thought, oh, a bit of Jamiroquai will do the trick. and Keezy does his normal comedy sort of tune.
5:50Mike Minogue:To be fair, whatever is a comedy song. But it's just a ripper, man, because I played that randomly. I found it again and I played it when we did that promo where I was driving the bus and everyone was in the bus with me, party bus, and I was driving it and we played whatever. Everyone was like, oh, the song rules, man. Keezy, you're the man. Keezy, you should choose this on the thromber, man. I'm glad that you guys didn't choose. My concern listening to it was that you guys were going to go too rocky because in that morning, so I don't know if we need to be hearing Rage Against Machine or Telegram.
6:19Like, I was really worried about it. Yes.
6:22Keyzie:Yeah, let's just say we were instructed about that. People can't handle that in the morning, guys. Well, I don't know about that. I mean, I think it has the potential of firing people up for their day. Oh, but that's what you don't want, though. No, you don't want them fired up. You don't want people having any kind of an emotion when they listen to the radio.
6:37Mike Minogue:No. The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show Podcast. To be fair, Jase, I mean, you already can't even drink coffees on breakfast without making yourself nauseous, let alone listen to rage.
6:55Keyzie:It's purely a timing thing. I'm very regular, both with my ablutions and when I drink coffee. And so that was all up the wazoo. And so I was driving home feeling quite nauseous both mornings. And I had an instant, which terrible move. So annoying. I have an instant coffee.
7:14Mike Minogue:It's foul and disgusting. I feel like shit. It's like no one made you drink it. You made it yourself. You did, Kesey. No, I didn't. It's a special self-control. How many coffees did you have during the show? Actually, probably only about three. That's a lot in the space of three hours.
7:27Keyzie:Yeah, that's my daily intake. But if you started off with a few waters, and you say, I can't have one until seven, that's when you can have your first coffee. Yeah. And then a bag of chips. Yeah, yeah. Did you have any chips? and they're so well done. You see, that's a good thing. Yeah, man. But I think I'd be like - No chips for Hoity J, by the way. Oh, and I saw the video of you not eating chips. Yeah. I think I would be like Manaya, who we're about to take over their show. Yeah. So I wonder if I can use his filter, because he's got an R2-D2 filter for coffee. Oh, coffee filter. Yeah, his plunging thing.
8:03I'd use that, a plunger. Yeah. That'll be a bit of me.
8:07Mike Minogue:Yeah. By the way, don't tell him that we're dropping him off breakfast and I'm coming in. I already told him. It feels like it should come from the top. Did you tell him?
8:15Keyzie:Yeah, I just went straight to the source. What did you say? I said, mate, you've had a good run. You actually said to him, jeez, you'd be good on drive. Yeah, and he's banged on about how easy drive is. I don't know if he's ready for drive. And I said to him, man, look, you're ready, Minar. You've done your little sort of stint on Brekkie. Did you say little stint? That's good. Yeah, you've done your little stint. You've had your little go.
8:37Mike Minogue:Did you tell him about the new show set up on Brekkie? Yes. What did you tell him? What was it again? I'm not going to tell him what the new set-up was.
8:44Keyzie:What do you mean? It was Keezy and Mania Brekkie. Oh, yeah, good.
8:49Mike Minogue:But Mania's going to drive. Yeah, good. Yeah, but he's going to do both shows. Both shows for the same cost. Oh, yeah, yeah. He'll probably have to take half a pay cut, to be honest. Yeah, exactly. And then, Jase, you'll be in the back paddock. Yeah, I'm in the back paddock. Like a Ram cast. Yes. And, Mogi, you're doing 2 till 4 in the afternoon, the Greg Preble slot. I sort of feel like I could do an hour before you guys and breakfast. Oh, the early, early shift. Yeah, the five to six, just to get the day started. I think you could. That's a great idea. To set up your ratings. It has to be Talkback, though.
9:17Mike Minogue:Oh, it'll be pure filth. Yeah. Yeah. Five to six. What is it? It's called Filth and Rage, and it's just you talking filth and playing Rage Against the Machine. Yeah, I mean, I think there's a place for that.
9:28Keyzie:I think so. I think it's a great idea. Honestly. Every morning at 5am. I think we changed the brand. The brand's got to change as well for Horeki. I think we changed it to Horeki Hardcore. Yeah. We continue to run the tiri, the ship, the boat, but we put a Jolly Roger on the flag and we go full pirates. I thought you said we continue to run the tiri. And I was like, what? Tiri. The tiri. Don't you mean Buzzies? Yeah, that too. And we just start playing hardcore music, brand new rock, and that's it. Yeah. Every hour for the first month, we execute a band. So there's a competition. You have band versus band or artist versus artist, and the one that gets voted out gets executed.
10:14And when you mean executed? Never played again. But not actually shot. Not actually shot, no. That'd be great. But put in front of a firing squad, and people can choose the method. Guillotine, poison, electric chair. Shot. Electric chair's got a good sound to it.
10:30Mike Minogue:Because it's like the picture of the, what's the famous album? Is it Ride the Lightning? Yes. With the electric chair? Yes. We should do a segment on February of every year where we kill a band from the playlist. We kill a band from the playlist. And they're not allowed to be played all year. Well, even if you did it and you said, look, for a week or a month, we're going to drop them. And then you get to find out from the audience who they love and who they don't. Who's going in the chair? Green Day. Bang. Dead.

10:50Keyzie:Boom.
10:51Mike Minogue:Dead, Jase.
10:51Keyzie:Would you be all J? Absolutely electrocuted. I'd be good with that. Yeah. Bit of Tom Petty, maybe. Tom Petty's gone. He's gone. Gone. He's gone. Eyes to the front. Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? You could potentially do errors. So you could do - This is on YouTube, by the way. You could do Tom Petty versus Tom Petty, and you go album by album. So you go, these ones are all right. These albums, these are the songs that are on it, and these are the songs that are on this one. We're executing one of these albums. Which one's it going to be?
11:19Mike Minogue:Learning to fly. That one. Learning to fly. Like running down a dream zone. That's the thing. You've got a few favourites, Keezy. That's a good - And we all do. Yeah. That's a good radio segment. We should do it, and then you've got to kill an artist. I reckon for the whole year. Yeah, I think so. That's good. And then everyone votes and it's Foo Fighters and management shits their pants. Absolutely. That would be amazing. Yeah, that's right. All the Red Hots. Yeah. That would be amazing. Red Hots would be good. Are you listening to any of this, Jase? Or just perving, man? Absolute filth. It's the Jesus part two.
11:51Mike Minogue:It's holy hecka. It's the... It was... It was... It was your head swivel.
11:57Keyzie:It was your head swivel that made me go, what the fuck? Hey, good to see you, Phil. It's good to be back. Can I just say, less than three weeks, fellas, we're in Fiji. I know, how good. Less than three weeks. In three weeks, you guys will be home. And?
12:14Mike Minogue:Oh, we'll be home. In three weeks, you'll be home, I'll be on a week's holiday.
12:17Keyzie:We'll find out today, too, who our winner is. Douche, douche, douche, douche, douche. Listen to the big show, four or seven, weekdays. I've got a headache now.
