In short

The hosts banter about prepping their homes for guests, remodeling and replacing a ruined deck with a “floating” deck, buying nicer home/serving items (especially wine/serving glasses), and the contrast between “show-home tidy” versus lived-in mess.

Key claims

nice stuff doesn’t equal happiness; a floating deck isn’t connected to the house; guests’ visits drive cleaning and home improvements; women care more about matching glassware than men; messy, lived-in homes feel more welcoming than museum-like show homes.

Notable examples

removing an old deck that revealed a “big hole”; using a coffee cup as a gin-and-tonic glass; planning painting, driveway concrete steps, and deck work next week; referencing Eden Noodle Bar beer towers.

Sound check. Because of the sound check. For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok or Raw Dog It. 4 to 7 every weekday on Radio Horeke.

0:28Keyzie:Correct. Hey, guys. That's right. How are we going, fellas?

0:32Mike Minogue:Fizzed up, man. Busy weekend ahead. Busy weekend, man. What are you doing, man? You're doing me down a little bit, Jase? A little bit, a little bit, a little bit, a little bit. Yeah, that'll do. Yeah, nice, guys. That's good from you, man. What are you doing, Jase? I couldn't really hear myself. Just knocking shit over.

0:48Keyzie:And I love the sound of my own voice, as you know. I do know that. What's happening this weekend, Keezy? You fucking sicko.

0:55Mike Minogue:You know how I said that I've got those Not well-to-do people coming over But the people that are better off than us You call them snobs They're not snobs, they're lovely

1:05Keyzie:Your wife's snobby friends

1:07Mike Minogue:Well no, they're just very much 15 years older than us And so they're 15 years further along So about my age Mate, aren't you like 25 years? No Oh Yeah, so they're like Their houses and stuff are really nice And they've got really nice stuff Have they? I'm still renting. They hosted us. Why don't they spend all their money on piss?

1:30Keyzie:Yeah, I was going to say, don't, you know, look, Keezy, it's all very well having nice stuff. But at the end of the day, mate, that's not what makes you happy, man. What makes you happy, man, is having a deck that's gone to ruins over the course of three decades. Got home last night, actually, just on that field. The old deck's ripped up. She's gone. While the little deck out the front of the house. Did you pour a drink, man? Times are a-changing. I wish I had seen your house, Jase. It is a shame because I'd like to see the change. Did you take lots of befores? No, we didn't do that with the garden either.

2:07Keyzie:We're really annoyed with ourselves. But I was amazed because they ripped it all up, of course, how big the hole was. Yeah, man. You're often surprised how big the hole is when you take it out. That was quite a big fucking deck. and now he's putting in a floating deck. Float? Yeah, floating. Have you heard of that before? My wife said he's going to put in a floating deck. And I went, what the fuck's a floating deck?

2:32Mike Minogue:Just means it's not connected to the house? Correct. Yes. And it'll just be on its own little plastic feet or is he anchoring it into the ground?

2:38Keyzie:Well, all the foundations are really good. Oh, good foundations. Yes. So he said your foundations are fine. That was the worry that he's going to rip it all up and go, oh, your foundations are fucked. We're going to have to get rid of all those as well. So there you go It's exciting What's your timeline on all this bullshit? Well that's going to be done probably That'll be finished next Because he's doing Tuesday Thursdays Sure So that'll be finished next week Then we're going to get some concrete steps for our driveway Right Then onto the big deck And then about the whole thing Everything that you're doing though What do you reckon?

3:14When do you reckon you're going to have someone in?

3:16Keyzie:When are you going to be out? Are you out this year? Yes Wow How good That is the plan, absolutely. And I said to my wife actually the other day, if we're not out by the end of the year, I'm going to be fucked off. Oh, you don't want Hootie Jo in a bad mood around Christmas time, I'll tell you what. I'm often in a really good mood, Keezy. I'd say so. It's just we only sleep here. It's just never when I'm at work. Yeah, never at work. It's no good. I'm never in a good mood at work, man. Yeah, right. Or at golf. But whilst, hey.

3:45Mike Minogue:I'm joking. He's got him. He's got him. No, no, no. Okay, we've changed topics about 100 times. I haven't even finished telling you about why it's a busy weekend this weekend.

3:54Keyzie:Yeah, carry on. Yeah, let's go back to that.

3:56Mike Minogue:What were you going to say?

3:57Keyzie:We may have someone moving in that is a friend of my wife's. Oh, menagerie. Like moving in while you're still there? No. Which saves us a particularly annoying job. I know the one. Yes. So that's good. Back to your big weekend, Jesus.

4:16Mike Minogue:I want to hear about your extractor fan.

4:19Keyzie:No. It's very boring chat.

4:23Mike Minogue:Yeah, right, right, right. But basically, I've got to go to somewhere and buy a carafe and some nice glasses to drink out of. Oh, you're joking. Because our glasses are shit, apparently. Yeah. Because we've gone to get out, like, our glasses.

4:36Keyzie:You mean what, like wine glasses?

4:37Mike Minogue:Yeah. And we've got, like, four. This is going to be six. We've got, like, four nice ones, and the rest of them are all mismatched shitters. Yeah. So we just need to be like, okay, we just need some nice stuff. That's fair enough. You kind of do, but it's one of those, things where the men don't care, generally speaking. Yeah. But for women, it's really important. Yes. And you've just got to accept that it is. Whereas for me, I'll drink out of a jar. For example, I got home last week and we were out of glasses. Yeah. Because we've got like three glasses for gin and tonics. Yeah. And there was already three people at home.

5:09Right. So I just used this coffee cup. As a gin and tonic cup. For gin and tonic. And the missus was like, what are you using that one for? Is this? Because it holds piss. It's fine. Yeah, it holds piss. It does the job. It's glass. I could take that blue. The rubber grip off it. That says Koffix on it.

5:26Mike Minogue:Well, so tomorrow, literally the whole day is put aside for us to pretty much remodel our entire house. The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast. Yeah, well, it's got to be spotless, I tell you what. No, it's always going to be clean, but we have to, like, I've noticed I opened the utensil drawer, not the knives and forks, the one underneath, the big utensils. all immaculate. I'm like, well, someone's organised that. I'm like, oh, you're worried about them looking at our utensil drawer, aren't you? Yeah. And she's like, no, I just thought it was time for a spruce up.

5:59Mike Minogue:yeah. But it's true though, you do need those things to come along to give you the reason to do the things. Yeah, but this is like, this is a higher level than I've ever experienced before. Yeah, right. I have to buy new glasses.

6:10Keyzie:I couldn't give a fuck about my drawers, but anyway. Yeah, but you also never invite anyone over. Yeah, it's true. You've just reminded me, though, actually. We used to have six really high-quality wine glasses. I'd be fucked if I know where they are now. Crystal? No, no, but they were... I don't really do a crystal wine glass. No, not a wine glass. I've no idea. But they were really nice fucking wine glasses. Best in the world? Goblet? But I don't know where they are now. Could you make my wife remove them from the house?

6:40Mike Minogue:Can I borrow them? Especially if you don't drink wine, there's not much use for it.

6:43Keyzie:Yeah, well, exactly. You could if I knew where they were. Imagine that.

6:47Mike Minogue:He gives them to me. I'm borrowing Hoardy J's goblets for the big party. And they're from like the 30s.

6:53Keyzie:I used to like back in the day, I had this really nice little sort of half-pint beer glass. Not like a mug. It was like a fluted glass. And I used to love drinking my beersies out of there. Yeah, I know the ones that you mean. Yeah. But you get in the pub, like a 12 or a 7.

7:11Mike Minogue:They're called... A high boy? No. Now I'll think of it. Because they get seven ounces, the really small ones, that you get in the Razzler with your little plastic jug, and then you've got a 12 ounce.

7:23Keyzie:They're probably about that tall.

7:24Mike Minogue:That's a Catalina?

7:25Keyzie:And it just sort of tapered down.

7:27Mike Minogue:Oh, like a goblet-y kind of one. No, not goblet, but like... It's like a schooner, isn't it? Yeah, it's like a schooner. Yeah, right, okay.

7:34Keyzie:And I used to love that glass. I'd drink all the beers. And obviously they have them, and you can just do one mouthful and she's going, you're fucking beautiful. And you pour it in that glass. It's like me with chips. Right. You know, you'd go, oh, so I can just sip it and enjoy my beer. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But you're right. She went down real easy in that glass. Did she? A schooner. Yeah. Smaller than a schooner. What do they got? A midi, I think they call it over in Australia. A midi, they do. A midi, a handle or a pot, 285 mils in Australia. Yep, that's the bastard. Yes. It's slightly smaller than a schooner, which is for 20 years.

8:05Mike Minogue:I loved it. My favourite is the, you know the seven-ounce glasses they give you to Raza? like the really old little glasses they give you. I love sitting down with a giant jug of beer and a tiny little cup. Yeah, this is making me want to drink piss.

8:19Keyzie:Yeah, same here, man.

8:21Mike Minogue:The smaller the cup, I reckon the better.

8:23Keyzie:Well, I agree, and it's weird, eh?

Read the full transcript

8:25Mike Minogue:As long as you know you've got that giant vessel to keep at it. But you can't just bang. It's so good. Imagine sitting down. Put it in here so I can put it in here. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Pop it in here, and then I'll put it in there. Imagine if you sat down with a beer tower and a seven-ounce little glass from the Razza, but a bit of tower with its own little tap on it. Imagine how fun that would be. Fuck yeah. Just you and the beer tower. Yeah. They have those at Eden Noodles. Really? The beer towers. Good Eden. We've got to go there. We do. Eden Noodle Bar. Walked past there the other day. Couple of weeks away, isn't it?

8:55Yeah. Couple of three.

8:56Mike Minogue:Walked past it the other day. I was like, wow, it's way fancier than I thought. Really good. Yeah, because the other ones are all shit. Right. Not shit, but they're all just like, here's your noodles. No, it's good fun in there. Yeah, right.

9:05Keyzie:It's a good fun joint. You mean like West Auckland style? Yeah, 100%. and noodles, fuck off. 100%, that's what it's like. Yeah, yeah, I've been there a couple of times. It's not the flashiest place. And the one in Dominion Roads, you can never get a seat, so you don't even bother. There's like four seats though, isn't there? So that's your busy weekend, Keezy, is it?

9:23Mike Minogue:You got that? No, but prepping the entire house for that. Right. Remodelling it. Like we're getting some painting work done right now on the outside of my house. My wife is like, that's going to be like finished before they come tomorrow, right? Blah, blah. I think so. So I asked the tradie, I was like, because I was supposed to finish yesterday. What is he painting? today. The base of my house.

9:41Keyzie:Right.

9:41Mike Minogue:You know, so we've got a brick and tile house and the base, the white part with like plaster on it, is just really old and faded and blah, blah, blah. So we just got that all painted. Yeah. I went around to a mate's place a couple of weeks ago and I'd never been to his house before and he's got four kids and I said, oh, I'll come over and this will be the time. I said, just make sure it's spotless by the time I get there, you know, because that's what our experience is, right? is that you tidy it from fucking top to bottom. Went around there, shit everywhere. Food on the floor. Amazing, eh? And it was great because I felt like I'd been welcomed into their home.

10:20This is how it is, their house. I agree. They've done nothing special for me because I'm nothing special to them in the sense that I'm not royalty.

10:31Mike Minogue:No, no, you're just part of the family. Yeah, like you can come into a house. Exactly. It was fucking great. It depends how anal you are. I personally don't care. I care a wee bit enough to be like, oh, I'll tidy things up a bit. But Lucy and a few of her friends and stuff, one of them found out that I'd gone around to their house without her knowing because I was grabbing something off the husband. And then she's just like, and did you completely revamp the entire house? And I walked in, there was kids' toys everywhere, and it was real normal. It was sweet as. And then she was like afterwards, found out that I'd been there, and was like freaking out a bit.

11:02At no point would you ever leave a house and just be like, I mean, I have been to some people's houses, but there's something wrong with them. Their house is so fucking messy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But would you ever be in a lived-in house and be like, oh, my fucking... Exactly. It's a waste of time. It is a weird... I find it weird.

11:18Keyzie:Would you rather be in a house that feels like a home? I fucking hate going into houses, and I feel like I'm in a museum and everything. Because you're the oldest thing, isn't it? There's fucking picture books and, you know, a little flower display and 50 cushions on the fucking thing, and everything's immaculate. Yeah. Fuck that shit, man. Come around to Hoyt and Jay's. Get a taste of the real world. You don't mean that, though.

11:40Mike Minogue:Yeah, I do. That's the closest thing we've had to an invite.

11:43Keyzie:That's right.

11:44Mike Minogue:A hypothetical. Yeah.

11:45Keyzie:But you know what I mean, though? It's like I'm not trying to put my house in fucking house and garden. Well, my wife is. Well, you could try, but they wouldn't have it. Yeah, well, they wouldn't. Yeah, they wouldn't have it. God, I watched an episode last night of Grand Design Sellers.

12:01Mike Minogue:Can you have a yarn about that? Okay. NZ? Yeah, NZ version. The thing that cracks me up on this is that our friends always go, man, you guys' house is always so tidy. And you're like, yeah, yeah, it is. Yeah, it's always like that. When you can't come around. Yeah, I always tell people. I always tell people, it's like, this isn't what it's like.

12:16Keyzie:Mind you, there's no excuse for not having a tidy house if it's just two of you living there.

12:20Mike Minogue:100%, and it is tidy, in my opinion. But it's like show-home tidy when anyone comes around. That's what I mean.

12:26Keyzie:I hate going into show-home houses. Sweet, well, I wouldn't invite you around. But it literally is that, and I don't hate it, because at least it gets done. And it looks nice. It gives you a timeline because we clean the house every week. Yeah. But the bath gets done, the shower gets done, the sink, the toilet, it doesn't bother me because at least it's done and it's done really quick and I'm not the only one doing it because my wife's a shocker. Can you invite me around to your house, Kesey, when it's really filthy? Ah, no. About quarter past midnight. Right now. Yeah.

12:56Mike Minogue:Hey, listen to the big show, four to seven weekdays on old hauraki there. It's got itchy eyeballs. Oh, no. Probably cancer.
