In short
The hosts wrap up the week on “Keyzie time,” then trade stories about building a new podcast studio and their weekend drinking habits, including “in my cups” blowouts, water-between-drinks myths, and favorite/awful alcohol (red wine, port, creme de menthe). They also discuss advice/philosophy and a past friend, Marty.
Guest backgrounds
No guests appear; it’s just the hosts (Keyzie and Jase/Moggy).
Key claims
Water between drinks only reduces total alcohol, not toxins; “no amount of poison is good for you.”
Notable examples
Friday mates from Wellington; Sunday work; studio baffling/aircon/carpet; wife buys lemons/tonic and darts; Marty’s tiny-but-gutsy sports career and “power chunder” on a mountain; school smoking that teachers “knew.”

0:14Mike Minogue:Yeah, it's Keyzie time. Totally it is. Well, away you go then. Keyzie. Keyzie.
0:24Keyzie:Keyzie. Keyzie.
0:25Mike Minogue:Guys. Keyzie. First thing we've done this week is Keezy time and a big Keezy chant. Well, no, second thing. Wow, we filmed a little video. Yeah, it was a good video. Yeah, it was a good video, actually.
0:37Keyzie:I think it's actually going to be one of our best. Oh, without a doubt. I've been thinking about it nonstop. And I was thinking the backbones that we made it for. Weren't they backbones, man? They got value for money right there. Right when that comes out. Boom. It is going to be huge. Their lives are going to change. Totally, man. Totally, man. Good weekend, Moggy. It was a good weekend, actually. I had some friends up from Wellington, got pissed up on Friday, recovered. That's the way to do it, Friday. Saturday, yep. And then worked Sunday. Oh. Yeah. That's good. Got a new podcast studio, Jase.
1:14Cool. It's pretty cool, man. So I was putting all the baffling in. So that'll fall out. Moving all that up. Yeah, that'll be on the floor when I turn up tomorrow. Excellent. No, I went back today, Keezy. It's still there, man.
1:24Mike Minogue:Oh, wow. I'm baffled. Yeah, and then today getting the aircon unit moved, painting done, electrician in, and then carpet in next week. We're nearly finished, man. Wow. It's pretty cool. It's pretty exciting. So if you're looking to get a podcast made, you know, and you've got some money, give us a call. Give you a call. It's 0800 Mogey. 0800 Mogey. Do you want to make a podcast, man? Yes. Frank's podcast, man. You want to make a podcast?
1:50Keyzie:I told you my podcast idea was five questions. I think it's just going to be you and you just interview some of your oldest friends. Okay. The first chat will be with the guy that you used to live with when you lived above the butcher's shop. Wow. And we just call it the butcher's shop with Hoity Jisbert. Unfortunately, he's no longer with us.
2:13Mike Minogue:Hoity Jisbert's butchery.
2:15Keyzie:My greatest friend. Right. Is that Marty? Marty, yeah. Do you reckon I would have liked Marty? You would have loved Marty. Really? He and you both would have loved Marty because wirier and skinnier than me. Oh, I love that. But a tougher bastard. Tough bastard. He played, like, he was out of this world, man, but when he left school, he played league for the Ho-Hora, what they called the Ho-Hora something or other, and he was by far the tiniest dude, and they were all massive dudes, but they all loved him because he was the gutsiest. He was like that in rugby too. He was just into it.
2:54Mike Minogue:Loved it.
2:55Keyzie:Good man.
2:55Mike Minogue:Do you reckon we would have preferred to do a show with Marty?
2:58Keyzie:Marty was very philosophical. I miss that in my life. I miss his wisdom.
3:03Mike Minogue:Because you sort of try to be philosophical, eh? Like you'll say stuff.
3:07Keyzie:Do I? Yeah.
3:09Mike Minogue:Every now and then you'll try to say something philosophical.
3:12Keyzie:Don't sweat the small stuff. Yeah, that's one of yours, eh? Yeah, yeah, because you definitely don't do that. Well, it's not one of mine. It's one that I agree with, though. Yeah. I mean, I can't do it. No. But, I mean, it's a really good bit of advice and philosophy.
3:27Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast. What time do you wrap it up on Friday, man? Sunday morning. Wow. Three. It was just at home, so that was all right. I wish I could do that with my wife, eh? Well, I had a couple of mates as well. But, yeah, the problem was it was her idea because I said to her, did I tell you this on Friday? Yes. You said because you guys aren't drinking till Fiji and then she was like. I said, she came in here and I said, we're not drinking because if you drink, then I'm buying. Sorry, there's a beep coming out of my wallet for some reason.
4:05Then just know that I'll be buying a packet of darts on the way home. Yes. And then I got a text saying, I'm on the gins, bring home some lemons, some tonic water. And I was like, and a packet of darts.
4:17Mike Minogue:And what did she say? Nothing. Did you get a packet of darts? Sure did. Hell yeah. Delicious. Now back on the wagon again for another couple of weeks. I've got a stag do this weekend. Yeah, we've got a stag this weekend. I know. I'm telling them I'm not going. Right. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. It's all, I can't, it's too much time.
4:36Keyzie:I suppose it is a couple of weeks really, isn't it? It's Friday, isn't it? Yeah, it's two weeks. It's close enough. It's one weekend though, Jase. I guess you could put it that way. Yeah, man. Yeah. So no, I'm going to flag that. I'm going to flag that. I just got into the point after three weeks off where I was feeling really good as well. Yeah. Just feeling like, nah. Got sort of midway through the week. I was at the gym. I left the gym. I was like, now I'm feeling back to myself. Yes. And now I'm not. Time for a blowout. Time to get a bag at it because my missus just can't help it. Yes.
5:04Mike Minogue:She's a shocker. She's an enabler. But what she did and what I didn't do was she stopped drinking at midnight and stayed up till 2.30, but it was just on the waters, which I didn't realise because I'd gotten excited by that point. I'm quite good at doing that, but I didn't do that on Friday night. Yeah. I kept on going.
5:19Keyzie:Oh, like when I was in my cups, I never did that. You know this. When you were what? In my cups. On my purse. Oh, right. I've never heard that before. When, you know, because there's always theories going around, you know, you go out with your mates for dinner and you get on it. And you'd be having wine and then they'd have a glass of water. Yeah. And you'd go, why are you doing that for? And they'd go, oh, just I have a glass of water between every drink. Yeah, which is a great way to do it. Just fucking drink, you fucking wanker. Well, it's not so much. I don't even think it's the water. I just think it's one drink that's not another glass of wine.
5:53Yes.
5:54Mike Minogue:Well, exactly. I think it's good for you. But that's what the missus was doing as well. I think the water between drinks is good for your liver. I think it's bullshit. It's just less drinks that you're having, right? So it's a period of time where you're just drinking water instead of another wine. Yeah, right. Because otherwise it would have been 50 and it's only 25 now. A mate of mine, he's done it for years. He'll drink a beer and then he's always like, for every beer I would boof two glasses of water. So he'll drink a beer, and then he won't then be holding a nursing glass of water. He will boog two glasses of water, and the whole time you're just pissing.
6:25Exactly. Fuck that. I'd rather be hallowed.
6:27Mike Minogue:But his liver is immaculate. It's a hell of a liver. It's a mean liver.
6:30Keyzie:Well, you think that. You think that. What do you mean? But the toxins and poisons from alcohol still accumulate despite water.
6:40Mike Minogue:It's not that bad at alcohol, though, is it? Like a guy's red wine. I mean, it gives you cancer, and it'll ruin your life. But other than that, you can't fold it. Just a little bit.
6:49Keyzie:And it's dependent on what you're drinking too. Like beers, he's not so much, but your spirits, your red wines. That's nice. That shit's nasty.
6:58Mike Minogue:How is red wine nasty? A glass of red wine, isn't that good for you? Yeah, but I'm talking like five bottles. No alcohol is good for you. But everyone's like, you know, a glass of red wine. Alcohol is a poison, Gizzy. It's a poison. There is no amount of poison that is good for you. It's a poison.
7:15Keyzie:And since when do you have a glass?
7:17Mike Minogue:Yeah, I reckon.
7:18Keyzie:Yeah, I was partial to red wine too.
7:21Mike Minogue:Because Saturday night we opened a bottle of Italian red. Oh, yeah, Euro night. Ate our pasta, it was delicious. Pasta, what's that? Oh, I don't even have the time to.
7:32Keyzie:Oh, sorry.
7:33Mike Minogue:Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know noodles? Yes. Sort of like that, but from Europe. Yeah, I opened a bottle of Italian red. My wife ordered four bottles of the stuff. I thought she got a case. Nah. She had a glass of it, decided, because she had a hen stew last weekend and she's still a bit off from it. It put her out the most I've ever seen. She was cooked though, eh? Yeah. She ambles. She had one glass and was like, I just can't. It's wasted on me right now. Meanwhile, I drank the rest of the bottle of red wine, was about to crack into the second bottle. I was like, how many bottles of this do we have?
8:08Mike Minogue:And she's like, well, only three. And I was like, oh, okay, better not. And then I was just like rummaging through the cupboard and found a bottle of port that I forgot I had, finished that. There was maybe a third of a bottle of port left. Fuck, it was sweet. One glass is delicious. But I was just at that point where I just wanted to have another bottle of something. Yeah, it was great.
8:28Keyzie:I went through a bit of a port phase for a while. So sweet, I can't do it. She's just too much. It reminds me of my grandparents. It's a sipping thing. Yeah, I can't sip though. I'm not a sipper. So if you can't, then it sucks.

8:41Mike Minogue:because one of my dad's mates was known for just drinking a bottle of port every time he got on the piss, which is like, that's so much sugar. Yeah. It's so bad. There's nothing pleasant about that idea. It's like whiskey. It's the same thing. It tastes like shit, but it's also sipping.
8:57Keyzie:Yeah, but whiskey, yeah, it's not a sweet drink. No. But something like port. But it's still a sipper, yeah. Not as bad as creme de menthe.
9:07Mike Minogue:Never heard of it. Maybe not. Creme de menthe. Oh, is it that light green shit? Yeah. Fuck. Who's drinking that shit?
9:14Keyzie:We stole it out of our matron's room and went up the mountain and drank it. Which mountain? Up the mountain.
9:20Mike Minogue:Everest. Oh, One Tree Hill. No, St. John, I think it is. Is that behind your old school?
9:27Keyzie:There's two mountains by my school.
9:30Mike Minogue:By Dilworth, yeah. Mount Eden and One Tree Hill.
9:32Keyzie:No, not One Tree Hill. One Tree Hill's miles away. Is it? Come on, man. Come on, Kesey. I don't know. Fucked up. Oh, Newmarket.
9:39Mike Minogue:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I know the one. So you go up there and drink it. Yeah. And I've told you this, but I have, and it was Marty.
9:46Keyzie:It was Marty. I have this great memory of standing on the top of the mountain with a full moon behind Marty and him doing a power chunder. Just a power chunder. And it was the only time I was actually at school and we didn't really sleep because we drank a whole bottle of it and went to class the next day. And I was off my head. I was so pissed. And just going to school and being really pissed was so weird. I can imagine you putting your hand up in class like,
10:17Mike Minogue:yes, Hoy, it's been a busy day.
10:20Keyzie:It's been a busy day. Do you reckon they knew?
10:23Mike Minogue:I don't know. They knew that I was a smoker. Because you're reeked. So you were punching darts and pissed at school. We were talking about that the other night as well, that you smoke at school, but people did, and they thought the teachers didn't know. Yeah. And you fucking reek.
10:37Keyzie:Oh, absolutely you do. And as I've said, I've gone back to my school after I left and they were all like, we knew you smoked. Of course we did. And they also used to clear out my drawers and leave my packet of durries untouched, which was kind of a, you know, a bit of a sign. Can I eat my octopus? Oh, no, it's a pork bowl. Yeah, it's pork bowls. It's a shumai.
10:58Mike Minogue:This is the big show, 4 to 7 weekdays on Radio Hodaki. Good listening.
11:01Keyzie:It's good stuff, man.
