In short

The episode is an “outro” chat about “industry secrets” from the Big Show crew: how late-night food/drinks and “dumb” choices (dessert, Turkish coffee) wreck sleep, and how actors/performers manage careers and auditions. They discuss being typecast as comedians, wanting more dramatic roles, and the tradeoff of chasing lucrative ad work versus avoiding being locked into one “known-for” character.

Key claims

serial ads can pay extremely well (e.g., voice gigs), but can limit future opportunities; taking ad roles can be a “bird in the hand” strategy.

Notable examples

ASB couple, ANZ/Talkback, Mitre 10 voice ads, Moles/Rebel Sport, and a past energy ad actor.

Guests

none; it’s a solo/crew banter featuring Jase and “Mogey” (Keezy/Jase mentioned).

0:00For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok or Raw Dogget 4 to 7 every weekday on Radio Horeke. Yeah, yeah man. Had my first good sleep fellas, that's good stuff. Wake up at 5 to 6. Wow. Mate. Mogey. Mogey. Mogey.

0:23Keyzie:Mogey. I had a fucking shocker and I'll tell you why. I'll tell you why. Went out for dinner last night as you know. with the in-laws there, to a Mediterranean place. It's not the same, though, is it? It's in Europe. Yeah, obviously the food wasn't as good.

0:38Mike Minogue:Do you know what they call those places in Europe?

0:39Keyzie:No.

0:40Mike Minogue:Just places. Just places, yeah, yeah.

0:43Keyzie:And we got to the end of the night, and they said, should we have some dessert? And I was like, oh, I'm actually pretty full. I don't want dessert. And then they got dessert, and I ate most of it.

0:53Mike Minogue:Can I guess what you also did?

0:54Keyzie:And then they said, oh, should we have a coffee?

0:56Mike Minogue:Coffee, I knew it.

0:57Keyzie:and I went no that would be the worst idea for me to fucking have a coffee but because you are a edit and so I got this Turkish coffee that came in this massive pot it was a syrup and it was just stupid went to bed at about 11 woke up at 1 that was me done

1:20Mike Minogue:the amount of times working with you now for as long as I have that you've said oh why have I had that that was dumb yes And I know it's dumb. No, well, this is a problem, Keezy, and you do know it's dumb, and I'm exactly the same, and you do it because you like doing the thing and you think, well, maybe the bad part of it won't happen this time. So you want the good part, but you don't want to pay the piper for it, but you always pay the piper.

1:44Keyzie:Yeah, you do. And I was thinking in the now, not in the future. You know what I mean? You were fucking over future, Jase. Exactly. And that's exactly right. It's just like, I want it now. I'm going to have it now. And maybe, just maybe, I'll be okay. Yeah, yeah, right. I'll be fine. But no. Right. Shithouse. Yeah, it's a shame, man.

2:05Mike Minogue:Yeah, man. How was your night, Keezy? I had a fucking ripper every night. The pants man was in town. What were you drinking, man? Went to the pub. So he's in town for work. No, no. He was saying he's working over the summer holidays covering all the cricket. Right. So in the meantime, they were like, oh, feel free to take time off whenever you want. Who's he doing that for? Over in Triple M or whatever, over in Aussie. Is Australia coming here, are they? No, no, he's working. Over in Australia, he'll be covering the cricket over there. He'll be working all summer. Oh, right, okay. So they're like, before the summer comes round, do you want to take some time off?

2:37Mike Minogue:So yeah, he's just here visiting family and that. But we went to the pub, me, him, Isaac, Dilly, Pugsan was there. Oh, yes. The boys. The feelers.

2:44Keyzie:Did Pugsan try it on? Oh, not try it on, tie it on.

2:48Mike Minogue:Yeah, he tried to have sex with Joel. Yeah, he did. No, he didn't. He had a viewing. This is an interesting thing about Pugs. He's very sensible now. He's always been a sensible guy. But I feel like old Pugs would have definitely been in on that last night. Yeah. But he's like, no, I've got a viewing tomorrow morning at 7am. You know, I've got to catch the bus home. Fair enough. I would have gotten pissed at his age. 100%. Oh, absolutely. You would have? Without question. Yeah, yeah. I would have gone on the hammer, man. I'm only just at the stage now where I think twice.

3:15Keyzie:Well, again, because it would have been a scenario, Moggy. Like, I want to do this now. I don't want to miss out. I don't want to miss out. And this viewing tomorrow, it doesn't matter if I'm a little bit dusty. We'll be fine. And, in fact, I had an example of that today. Today I got a message. I've got a mate stag do coming up. And so I got the message about that. Do you want to do this or do you want to do that? And you have the vote on your WhatsApp thingy. So I literally voted for a Saturday, right, a Saturday all day sort of thing. It's like that'll be me because the following week I'm away.

3:46We're all away, actually. So I voted for that thing. Then I immediately got an email through for me to do this panel thing on the Sunday, on the Sunday morning. Oh, God. Fuck. And so I said, yes, keen. Classic Mogey, though, obviously. Yes, I'm keen as I have just confirmed a stag do, but that's my problem, not yours. We'll see you in the morning. We'll see how she's going there, brother.

4:09Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast.

4:18Keyzie:What I used to do back in the day. Are you a G-man? No, I'd taken some water down the wrong way. As I used to resent work getting in the way of my drinking. You tipped water in your penis. You know, like I've talked to you about it before, where my agent would ring me up and go, there's this job, and I'm like, yes, I suppose so. That's what you say about everything. Yeah, that's true. That's true. What are you passionate about, Jase? Can I ask you that? Golf. Because you lost your passion for the arts. I think you'd be passionate for it if it was you that was doing it, if it was your thing, if it was your idea.

4:54Keyzie:Well, like I've said before, I think if I was doing a really full-on dramatic role, I'd be passionate about that. Anything that's not comedy, probably.

5:04Mike Minogue:Do you reckon people could take you seriously? Well, this is the thing is, am I innately stupid?

5:12Keyzie:No, you're not. You're a very good dramatic actor. Am I innately – well, this is the thing, you know, is that you get put into a box in this country and it's like you're a comedian so that's all you do. But also that is all you do. But you also do broken wood and things that aren't necessarily – you do drama and have done drama. He's kind of a comic character. Yes. But actually he did have one very dramatic episode where he lost his wife. Oh, yeah, that's good stuff. I got some good comments about that. Really? Yeah. It's good fun, that stuff. Yeah, it is. just challenging and different, Mogey.

5:45Have you told your agent that you want to do dramatic roles? Well, kind of the problem with it is it's not like you're overseas and you get to dictate what you're doing. Exactly. You're right, okay. So unless you're going to generate the work yourself, even someone of Jace's standing, you're kind of in a dream world. But having said that, you can talk to them and say, whereas they're putting other people forward for it, you just say, well, I want to be put forward for those roles as well. Yeah. Just tell them I want an audition. Make it happen. Yes.

6:13Mike Minogue:And then you might get it and then you'll be like.

6:16Keyzie:Yeah, exactly. Shit. And then I've got to organise the radio. It's just like fucking hell, man. But it was like that, you know, for me with ads. I just reached a point. And I've been doing them for years and years and years. And even though they're massively lucrative. They used to be. Or they used to be. And easy to do. Now I'm like, nah, I'm not going to do ad auditions. Sorry. Well, it's good that you're in a position where you don't have to do it. Well, that's right. But the problem is that all through those other years, you're like, the ad was the dream because it's one or two days' work and you get 15K.

6:49Mike Minogue:Wow. Fucking hell, that's good back in the day. It was. Yeah, and they get rolled over three times. That was good shit. So if you end up getting a gig like, let's say, Paul Ego and Pack and Save, that you don't have to work again. Don't even want to know how much that goes on. Yes.

7:03Keyzie:All of those sort of serial ads, you know, like the ASB couple, for example.

7:08Mike Minogue:Yeah, all the -

7:08Keyzie:The guy from ANZ. who was on our show, Talkback. They are cream in it. Yeah, and also the voice ones as well, so Mitre 10. All the ones where they've got the same voice week after week. Moles, Rebel Sport. Moles, Rebel Sport, yeah. I remember back, and this was like 10 years ago, there was a guy, I won't say his name, he was an actor obviously, and he did a sort of energy kind of.

7:30Mike Minogue:Like V or something?

7:31Keyzie:No, no, it was like energy. Maybe Meridian or something like that. Oh, I know the guy. I know the one. And I found out how much he was getting paid, and I was like, get fucked. Wow. Get fucked. I remember that as well. It wasn't a great series, but he's done very well as an actor. He's continued to do well. And I thought that that sort of thing would be the end of you. Same. And then there was another guy with another guy who that was the kind of ad he did, and that was pretty much the only thing he ended up doing. Yes. Well, because, of course, Keezy, in that scenario, it's basically removing any future ads for you, really.

8:05Keyzie:If you become known as something You know the guy that did the blah blah blah But you're better off taking that Fuck you

8:13Mike Minogue:Absolutely What is it a bird in the hand Yeah absolutely it is

8:17Keyzie:And it's probably like you know one or two days work a month Yeah And you're getting a fortune Especially the voice stuff The voice can be not even worth getting out of bed for But at the other end of it Fucking hell You don't have to do anything else Pretty good Pretty good Would be pretty good It would be great to get a sort of gig like that and then fuck off No you'd hate it I'd like it, actually. I think I'd like it. To be able to do voice from anywhere would be good. I'd still huff and puff, of course. Well, it's just your nature, mate. I've got to come back from bloody the Coromandel just to do this fucking ad.

8:47Got to come back from Spain.

8:49Keyzie:$80 ,000 they're paying me just to come back. You buy a new house on A Place in the Sun for that? A Place in the Sun. A shithole in the sun.

9:00Fellas, fellas, fellas. Good stuff, fellas. That's how you do it.

9:05Mike Minogue:I realise it says 10 minutes up there on the clock there, but it's actually a minute fast. That's all right. So we just need to sort of clap and stuff for about a minute. Doosh, doosh, doosh. Key Z. No.

9:17Keyzie:Up the waz, can I say that? Yeah, up the waz. Oh, and I just remember that it's the test match tomorrow morning. Yeah? Oh, it's Sunday. Oh, is it Sunday? We were taking the piss. Oh, were you? Yeah. Fuck. I was really looking forward to that. Saturday night, Argentina time. Yeah, that makes more sense. Yeah.
