In short
Interview etiquette—how to listen during interviews, avoid being stuck in your own head, and handle starstruck moments; also touches on cultural research and respectful questioning.
Guests
Phil (host/producer), plus recurring co-hosts Jase and Mogi (and “Keezy” mentioned), with stories from interviews they’ve done.
Key claims
Acting and interviewing both rely on listening; don’t worry about your next line/question while the other person talks; if you’re not listening you miss “gold.”
Notable examples
Phil recalls interviewing Booker T and being starstruck, ruining questions; Jase tells of a “Venom” wrestler where repeating the name highlighted the absurdity; a Skype interview with the Usos failed because they couldn’t relate to Samoan heritage/rugby content, leading to a much shorter segment.

0:17Mike Minogue:Test, test, one, two. We're in the ACC studio. Here we are.
0:21Keyzie:Two, two, two, two. This is where we did record the vinyl, of course.
0:25Mike Minogue:Oh, yes. That's right.
0:27Keyzie:We just gave one of those away for yellows, which is great. to a joyful recipient. He was freaking out, wasn't he? He was freaking out a bit.
0:35Mike Minogue:He obviously hates attention, you know, because he was physically backing away. Sally, he's a good man. He couldn't get away anymore. Which is fair enough. He was trying to climb up the wall. Some people just are not keen to have everyone staring at them and clapping.
0:47Keyzie:I think it was more a case that he was overwhelmed by being in the presence of his heroes. Do you think so? I don't know, man. You know what I mean? When people get to finally meet their heroes, they freak out a bit.
0:59Mike Minogue:We've met Sully quite a few times. Yeah, I've met him before. Yeah. Well, I haven't. We got on the hammer with him. We got on the hammer with him, Jase. Oh, Matt's.
1:05Keyzie:Yeah. Yeah. Was it Matt's or was it? No, it was Jerry's house. Oh, Jerry's house. Yeah, no, but I mean Matt's going away, wasn't it? It might have been, actually. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. That's what that was. Yes. Because I remember you guys regaling me with stories. Yarns.
1:20Mike Minogue:I tried to organise another one of those with Jerry, who, for the listeners, always, well, especially when I first started, would always host hauraki parties. Really great ones. Right. He hasn't done one since the Matt leaving one. The earliest we could get, we could pencil in, was the last day of January. So January 31st, pool party. He said, bring the kids, bring the partners. Right. And I was like, that's a great idea. Cool. Yeah. Cool, guys. Thanks for having a chat with me.
1:46Keyzie:I was just coughing. No, I was just trying to think about January next year. Oh, yeah, of course. Because you won't, you know. No, I'm just, I can barely think past today. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. I mean, you know, I mean, about stuff.
2:05Mike Minogue:Yeah, 100%.
2:06Keyzie:Just get through today. Hey, look, you've just done another week, man. Well done. Oh, it is Friday, isn't it? It is, yeah. Fuck, I've lost track of the days this week. It's been shockingly bad. I'm looking at my watch to look at the date as if I can see it. Can you not read your, yeah, it's terrible, isn't it? I think it's the 16th. I had a situation. The 14th. I had a situation today where I stuffed up a line and I had to stop the scene. Can someone get me the sides, please? The sides are like a small vision of the script. They gave me the sides. Physically small. So you could just have a quick glance at it.
2:40Not shorter.
2:41Keyzie:Yeah, yeah, so I could just figure out what the line was properly. Then I didn't have my glasses. So I was like, oh, that was fucking pointless. I can't even read this. Did you say the script supervisor, did she shout it out for you? Yeah, so they're very good on this particular production at making sure you get it exactly right, which I 99 % of the time do. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Of course. The other 1 % of the time you improve it. Yeah, yeah, I just add my own little bits and pieces.
3:06Mike Minogue:I fucking hate learning lines. I can't. The thought of having to do what you did the other day, which was learn five pages in one night, that's me calling them and saying, yeah, I'm not going to be here tomorrow. You get good at it. You do. You'd be sweet. You'd be totally fine with it. You do. And it's good fun It's good fun Once you've got it in your head The worst thing is not learning them properly But once you've got them in your head And it's second nature And then you can have fun with it That's awesome What sucks is half learning them And while the other person is talking You're just in your head going What the fuck is my line And you're not in the moment at all You're not acting You're just fucking a piece of shit You almost have to learn their lines too To know when you come in I never do No, I never do
3:53Keyzie:But where it helps is And this is what we've talked about, isn't it, Mogi? Acting is essentially listening, Keezy So when you're actually listening to what they're saying Rather than what Mogi was saying about being in your own head And going, what the fuck's my line? Yeah It makes it so much easier because then it makes sense
4:12Mike Minogue:See, that's very similar to my experience Which is interviewing
4:25Mike Minogue:When you first start interviewing When I was a very young reporter You'd go and you'd have Like six or seven questions And then you'd go Hi Tony Woodcock How's the mood in camp? Yeah the mood in camp's good Bloody Jerry Collins did a backflip Yesterday And then I'd be like cool cheers And he's like You should be like What? Jerry Collins at a backflip? A hundred percent. Do you know what? I was just thinking about this the other day because I was listening to Denon Kemp on Bloke and he was interviewing a UFC fighter, Jack. Mioff. Yeah, Jack Magdalena or something like that. Aussie guy who's fighting this weekend.
5:02And he was doing exactly that thing where he's not listening to what they're saying and they're dropping gold. You should just be in a conversation and listening to it and add it on. And then when the conversation's dead, then you go to your next question. That's right. And I was just thinking he's missing so much gold.
5:17Mike Minogue:But the reason he's missing gold is because he's not talking about his one thing, which is rugby league. That's right. And that's like a really good skill I learned, having to cover every single sport. I was down at the fucking wharf interviewing a sailor. But I think he does like it. To be honest, I think he was starstruck. Oh, you reckon that was it? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like Sully today.
5:37Keyzie:Oh, Sully. Sully.
5:39Mike Minogue:Sully. Sully. Sully. The one time I was starstruck, was interviewing Booker T, the wrestler. Oh, did you interview Booker T? Yeah, and it was on my second year of being a reporter, and they flew us over to Ozzy, and then I interviewed Booker T, and he's such big energy, and I had, especially in high school, I'd started getting into wrestling a wee bit, and I was like, holy fuck, man, this is awesome. And I like, he was great, because he could tell I was very green. Yeah, right. That was the one and only time where I was like starstruck, and it kind of fucked up my questions and shit, and I wasn't even listening.
6:11Mike Minogue:I was just like, oh, my God, I don't want to fuck this up. Don't fuck this up. One of my favourite things, I never used to listen to Bougiard, Jase, not because I didn't like it, but I didn't really know it was on or listen to radio, you know? Yes. But one thing that I did hear was you guys had a couple of wrestlers in the studio. It was a man and a woman, I think. Yes. And the guy's name was something like, I've talked to you about this before, but his name was something like Venom or it was just a really ridiculous name. Yeah, right. And Jase, you were talking to him about something mundane, something very day-to-day.
6:43But you just kept on saying his name You know what the problem is Venom And I was saying his name And you said it over and over again And I was crying Because it was All you did was keep on saying his name But it underlined what a ridiculous name
6:55Keyzie:Yes It just underlined it You weren't being mean You weren't doing anything You were saying his name Yes And I bet he walked out of there going Fuck I'm going to get a new name man I'm going to smack that little fucker in the head I thought it was fucking genius One time I interviewed
7:10Mike Minogue:There's these fellas called the Usos from Samoa and I did a Skype interview or a video call with him this was like five years ago and I was still at Sky and I was asking him about because we had some Samoa and rugby highlights and stuff and I was like asking him about all this stuff because they're the Usos right? Yeah. Uso. He literally couldn't relate to anything to do with Samoa at all. Really? It was shocking. I had to leave 90 % of the stuff out because it was going to be this cool story on this guy with Samoa and Heritage doing it big time but like Samoa and rugby and rugby league was you know And I couldn't use any of it Because he didn't know anything about Samoan Was he like American Samoan?
7:47Mike Minogue:Yeah, so he was born over there His dad was like a famous wrestler You know, for the time back in the day And unfortunately they'd used the whole Samoan thing And done no research whatsoever And hadn't even been to Yeah, it was really shit Fuck it was shit He was culturally appropriating his own culture
8:06Keyzie:I don't know if that's good or not That's just not on as far as I'm concerned Racist is what it is Yeah, it's massively racist, Uso.
8:14Mike Minogue:No, that was. Oh, was it? Nah, you're all good, man. But I was really taken aback by that. Yeah. Because it was supposed to be like a two-minute-thirty story, which was big for our show. Yeah. Ended up being like a little 40-second two grabs from him about the fight coming up, and that was it. Fucking. Uso. Uso.
8:32Keyzie:Uso. Were they like wrestlers? Were they league players? I don't know who they are. I mean, I know that you were starstruck and stuff, but.
8:41Mike Minogue:I was starstruck by a different person. Oh, yeah, the other guy. This is good stuff.
8:45Keyzie:But who were the Usos? Jace, the key to acting is listening. Oh, exactly. Yeah, well, I was listening. What I love about that is that's a perfect league. Play the music, Keezy. It's a perfect out. Is that what it is? What? Were they rugby league?
8:58Mike Minogue:Is what rugby league? The Usos?
9:00Keyzie:Yes. They were wrestlers. Well, that's what I thought, but then you were mentioning rugby league. He played them some rugby highlights.
9:06Mike Minogue:And I was going to talk to them about I think it was a few I think it was maybe Tui Lange at the time Oh yeah And just some big hits and shit And talk about it Because I was like These guys will know who these These are Samoan superstars Gotcha No idea And Jase they were wrestlers That was terrible listening from you Jase
9:22Keyzie:No I thought they were Listeners But then the league was in there And I got confused You thought they were listeners No the league We were talking about league And I was like Were they league fellas Oh that's good stuff guys My brain's fucked Can we go home now Are we done?
9:38Mike Minogue:No, we're not fucking done. We haven't even started, guys. I need you guys to fizz up.
9:42Keyzie:I'll fizz up all right. Don't you fucking worry about that. I'm a thrower, fuck it. Neither have I. You got one, Keezy?
9:48Mike Minogue:Yes. What is it? Why am I the only one that likes being here, man? What's going on? I'm just pooped. I'm pooped. So last night I did that TV show.
