In short
The hosts chat about Jase’s new old-school writing setup—typewriter obsession, gardening rain cleanup, and the banter around “Poetry of the Day.” They also joke about the typewriter being misidentified from a photo and discuss typing speed, mistakes, and nostalgia for floppy disks.
Guests
No external guests. The episode is between the regular hosts: Keyzie (Keezy/“Kesey”), Chase, and Mike Minogue (mentioned as absent; his daughter Moggy Minogue is also mentioned). Jase is the subject of the “new toy” (his typewriter).
Key claims
Jase’s typewriter is an Imperial Silver Seiko 220 (1971); his wife ordered a new ribbon; typing mistakes can’t be fully “undone” like on a computer; old typing felt emotionally stabilizing.
Notable examples
Clearing stormwater paths with a rake/pitchfork; chat suggestions like “riding a bumblebee”; the “Imperial Olivetti” confusion—turns out it’s an old keyboard taped to a shoebox with “Olivetti” as a shoe brand.

0:16Mike Minogue:Hi, Chase. Mike's not here. He's just doing wheeze. Yeah. Well, his daughter, Moggy Minogue, is doing wheeze. He'll be in a sec.
0:22Keyzie:Yeah, yeah. So we're just going to have to sort of bluff our way through the next minute or two. How are you going, man? You good?
0:28Mike Minogue:I'm good because I did fuck all today. Yeah. I've got a vibe off you like you did fuck all as well. You're giving off a fuck all vibe.
0:36Keyzie:Did I bring a fuck all vibe? Which is a good thing. Yeah. No, I actually did bits and pieces, not what I was planning to do.
0:44Mike Minogue:You wanted to go outside.
0:44Keyzie:I wanted to go outside and get stuck into the garden, but I couldn't. Well, I could have, I suppose, but I didn't want to get wet, Keezy.
0:51Mike Minogue:One of the old wet Keezy. One of the funnest times I've had in the garden was when it was pissing with rain. Yes. And I noticed, I think I talked about it on the show, I noticed that all these leaves and stuff were blocking the natural flood paths of the water, the storm water. Yes. And so I put my jacket on and my gummies and got out there with like a rake and pitchfork and stuff and cleared the way. It was out there for about an hour, bloody good fun.
1:13Keyzie:Can I borrow your rake?
1:15Mike Minogue:Do you not have a rake?
1:17Keyzie:I had one, but it snapped.
1:18Mike Minogue:I'm not kidding. No, a rake? What kind of rake? Well, any kind of rake you've got. No, well, do you want a leaf rake or do you want one of the metal ones? What are they called? A dirt rake? Well, either or would work fine. Well, what are you using it for? Because one's for leaves and one's for dirt and stuff.
1:32Keyzie:Just for general miscellaneous vegetation?
1:34Mike Minogue:I think I bought one. The leaf rake was$13. Okay. If you wanted to buy one. So you don't mind me using it? God, there's some loud people in the background of the studio here. What's going on? Who was that? No, you can buy your own. Sorry, man.
1:50Keyzie:What about you? You didn't bring in your water blaster. What's that about?
1:55Mike Minogue:Because you didn't remind me, did you?
1:56Keyzie:Yeah, no, that's true. But no, I had a good time. I got on my new typewriter. It's not new, it's old. My wife bought it for me. Best present ever. Is it secondhand? Secondhand. It's bullshit, man. I think it's secondhand. It must be secondhand. You know, you put that into the chat and everyone mocked you and I thought it was completely out of line. Yeah, thanks, man. Because I knew how much it would mean to you if you actually took a photo and actually posted it. Exactly. And I know you've been wanting to write some poetry for a long time. Correct. But it was just irresistible to us. Because we're childish.
2:22We're immature. Sure, we're assholes at heart, but also I'm very happy for you.
2:26Mike Minogue:Well, I knew Jase was loving it, right? I'm going to read out the chat here just because it was quite entertaining. So Jase put a photo of his new typewriter. What kind of typewriter? It's an imperial? Olivetti. Oh, the Olivetti. Yeah. It's a classic. For jizz to pump out some poetry, that's what Mike Minogue said. Yeah. I was expecting that. Yeah. And then Jase said, totally, the words have been piling up for years. and then Mike said, start with one about you riding a bumblebee. And then I said, between that and your piano, you'll be so busy. And then Mike said, another thing you can sell in a year as new.
3:04Mike Minogue:And then Jay said, you may laugh, fellas, but it's cemented my retirement plans. In the meantime, just focus on some content, eh, fellas? Whereas we felt we'd been delivering content throughout that conversation.
3:17Keyzie:And in fairness to you guys, I mean, it was fully expected. Oh, yes. I didn't post that expecting, you know, support and positivity. But I do support you. And have you been writing? Have you been using it? I have been. I've been tapping away all day. It's been great. How good. How good. And seriously, I don't know what it is about those old typewriters. I just love it. It's just the thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk. I had a few technical issues with it, which I've sorted out. Couldn't get it out of capital mode. Oh, no. Which was very odd. No. And the ribbon's a bit weak. So I need a new ribbon.
3:52Keyzie:But apart from that, she's all good, man. And my wife's just ordered me a new ribbon. Do you know what? Did your wife get you that? Yes. Now, I love that. Yes. Because, you know, having a partner that supports your passions like that. Correct. Not only supports it, but makes you do it, you see. Yes. Because if she left you to do it, how long would it have been until you got a typewriter? Never. 26 years. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
4:14Mike Minogue:What kind of typewriter is it? An imperial? I don't know, actually. Olivetti. No, Olivetti's not coming up. No such thing. It's not a typewriter at all then. It's a cake. It was a photo of a cake. The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast.
4:33Keyzie:I like the weight of the keys. Yeah. And you make errors as well. You make your errors. Well, this is the thing that I've discovered, of course. You do your spelling mistake or you're a bit clunky and then you go, oh, God, that's ruined. Rip it out. You can't go back and just change it. Well, I think you do. You twink. You go back, well, there's the whiteout, but then you go back and you're just X, X, X over the top of it. But I like that because it shows you the mistakes. Shows you working, yeah. Yes. You know? Yeah. I do like that. And that was what was amazing about the woman back in the day, right, the typist who would be taking, what do you call that, their dictation?
5:09Yes. Oh, the minutes? Yeah, and they'd be writing out reports from doctors, and they had to get it 100 % right, and they'd just be 80 words a minute.
5:17Mike Minogue:Sorry, I just looked up Imperial Olivetti. There's nothing there. I've just looked closely at the photo, Jase. It's actually just an old keyboard taped to a shoebox. It's a shoebox with some letters drawn on it. Yeah, and Olivetti is the name of the shoe brand. Is it? Oh, I've been ripped off. And you say you've been typing on it. It's been going great, guys.
5:41Keyzie:Yes, and I remember actually my stepsisters.
5:48Mike Minogue:Pause for comic effect, I guess.
5:50Keyzie:No, no.
5:51Mike Minogue:Waiting for us to drop something in there.
5:52Keyzie:Or just in terms of typing and the amount of words, because they did some course or whatever, and I was amazed by the amount of words they did in a minute. It was like, you're shitting me. Like I'm like clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk. I've been trying this year to just look at the screen, and I always forget to. Yes. Because I'm not too bad when I do it, but I just have to do it because I want to be able to look at the screen and get faster. My life, man, when I'm typing away there and I'm looking down for a couple of minutes, I look up and it's all in caps lock. Fucking hell. Yeah, because you're pretty good on the keyboard, aren't you, Kesey?
6:25Mike Minogue:I think anyone my age is relatively good because we just grew up doing it. Because computer studies came in its first year was when I was at school and I was 15, I think. Yeah, see, and I was – And then there was typing, but that was a woman's work. Now, I should have done that because that would have been more useful to me than any of the other bullshit they were peddling there. Now you just do the two index fingers, eh? That's right. That's what I do. And we've got the tongue slightly poked out. Yeah, that's me. That's me.
6:52Keyzie:But here's the thing. That's me. Back in the day when I was really getting into it, I got quite good. And I was actually reaching a point where I wasn't looking at the keyboard.
7:02Mike Minogue:And you're a tough little bastard as well.
7:03Keyzie:And I was a tough little fighter back then. Yeah, yeah. And as I say, I think that year that I wrote every day, just constantly, was probably the happiest year of my life. There you go. Well, there you go. So...
7:18Mike Minogue:Do you want to know more about your typewriter, man?
7:20Keyzie:Sure. Well, he's talking about some pretty emotional stuff. Yeah, didn't you see the tears welling up in my eyes there, Keezy? Every day. It was the happiest day of his life. That's why you guys mocking me really hurt. What about Poetry of the Day? And it would have as well. I'm sorry. No, I didn't. Poem of the Day from Hoardy J. Yeah, maybe. Obviously. Home of the week. Yeah. Time of the month. I've done three today. Have you? Jeez, you finished them all off. Yeah. Often, you know, a lot of parts, they'll work on things for months, but not you. Three in a day. Terrible.
7:47Mike Minogue:They're terrible. Yeah, good. So your typewriter, does it have a lid that comes down with a handle on it? Yes. Yep. So it is a 1971 Imperial Silver Seiko 220 Japanese manufacturer typewriter, 1971.
8:01Keyzie:Right, okay.
8:02Mike Minogue:Which is pretty good. and you can get one of those, not refurbished in original condition, for just shy of$400. That's a good present. Yeah, man. Your partner obviously loves you.

8:14Keyzie:Because I did look at online and stuff and so many of them, you go, oh, that's perfect, that one there, and they go, but it doesn't work. You know, and it's like, well, I don't want to buy a typewriter that doesn't work. Who does that? No, that's right.
8:29Mike Minogue:What's the point of that? It's my poetry that won't work. Yes. I did have an idea to like, I'd love to go back to dealing with everything on floppy disc again. Oh, imagine. I love floppy discs, man. That was my childhood, floppying. Yeah. I remember putting all sorts of games onto floppies and then installing them onto my mate's computers. We never really had a computer at home. We just had the consoles. Yeah. The gaming consoles, like your Nintendos and Atari. Yeah, but before that, we had the Atari. Yeah. Yeah. Bit of tennis there. But no typewriters, Jase, to be honest. No. No. Well, there you go, eh, fellas.
9:04Mike Minogue:We've got another minute What was I going to say? There was something there that you had there, Jase Was it about the happiest year of his life? Nah Because I would have thought that would have been 2017
9:16Keyzie:Maybe happy isn't the word I feel like you look back Emotionally stable Well, this is a curious thing I was emotionally a complete mess Right But I was stable when I was writing Right
9:29Mike Minogue:I feel like you look back on parts of your life with rose-sinted glasses, like, for example, Ode at your point or whatever you always talk about. Yes. Was it really that amazing? It was pretty amazing. Well, why aren't you still there then?
9:40Keyzie:Well, because I had to earn some money. You can never go back, Kesey.
9:44Mike Minogue:Yeah.
9:45Keyzie:You know, I was just smoking gun jib, making homebrew and fishing the whole time. I mean, what's it not like?
9:50Mike Minogue:I reckon I'm going to look back on the last four years of this show as one of the best moments of my career based on how much fun we have and the fact that I don't have to come into work until the afternoon. Yes. And I think I'm going to look back and be like, ah, why did I have enjoyed it more?
10:06Keyzie:Quit in that final year.
10:08Mike Minogue:Why did I just throw it all in? Can't believe they fired me. Yeah. Disgraceful. Can't believe all those sexual harassment. No, just joking. Hey, we've got to go. About to go live on air. Listen to the big show, 4 to 7 weekdays. Bye.
