In short

A live “Hauraki Big Show” podcast outro recorded at Bridge Pub in Christchurch, with banter about covering Mike Minogue’s shift, pub atmosphere, family/in-law awkwardness, and live-broadcast logistics; ends with a wrap-up and a joke about vaping/darts.

Guests

No formal guests; the hosts are Manias Stewart (filling in for Mike Minogue) and Jase (co-host).

Key claims

Christchurch weather is unexpectedly sunny; “breakfast money” makes life worries fade; the pub’s acoustics were treated to stop echo after a previous “wife” incident; without Hootie J the broadcast would be catastrophic.

Notable examples

discussion of “Love” (Manias’s seriously ill mother in a wheelchair), emphysema from smoking, screensaver “Keezy and Pugs,” and Manias’s Vietnam flashbacks during live OBs.

0:00Keyzie:For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok or Raw Dog It. 4 to 7 every weekday on Radio Hoda Ike. G'day fellas.

0:16Mike Minogue:G'day Jase. G'day Jase. Good afternoon everyone. Coming to you live from the Bridge Pub in Pribbleton Christchurch.

0:22Keyzie:How beautiful eh boys. We were told that we were going to be freezing our balls off down here. we arrive and it's a magnificent day. Sunny, clear, crisp, beautiful. Splendid. Keen listeners of the podcast may recognise that I'm not Mike Minogue. Manias Stewart, been roped in to cover Mike Minogue, provide a bit of background to the ranks. My mother told me she hadn't seen the sun in about six weeks and then lo and behold we touched down in Christchurch.

0:47Mike Minogue:No, she said she hadn't seen her sun in about six weeks. Yeah, that's where she was meeting me. Yeah, so if you could go visit her.

0:52Keyzie:She said you hadn't even called her in six weeks. Yeah, right. She's down here, right? You'd be going to see her, right? She's just around the corner, yeah. Because she hasn't been well already lately, has she? She's been actually quite seriously ill. Is she still in the wheelchair? Oh, I don't know. I haven't seen her in a while. Are they still trying to throw her out of her house and stuff? Yeah. Oh, right. Yeah, that's all still happening. Well, it's not they. It's Mania. He's trying to get the house. Oh, right. You're trying to get the house. Even on breakfast money. Well, what does she need three bedrooms for?

1:15You know what I mean? Well, yeah. I mean, that's a fair point. You know, she's just wheelcharing herself around this giant manor. She doesn't need to be sitting on that.

1:21Keyzie:Because I called her last night, Keezy, and she was in tears.

1:28Keyzie:then. What's her name again? Look, I just call her Love. What do you call her? It's a Maori name. What's her name? How do you do, Love? How you doing? And she was saying about those three rooms actually, that she was going to rent them out because she was really strapped for cash. And I said, that's crazy. I mean, your son works in breakfast radio for fuck's sake. I mean, surely he's looking after you. Well, look, you know, you do what you can for your parents when you can, Jase, but no, well, hopefully she makes it down. They do have a ramp out the front, so it'd be good to see her if she does make her way down.

1:58Mike Minogue:What is it like being on Brekkie Money? Comfortable I'd say. Like a lot of the things that you guys worry about I sort of don't really worry about. That's the thing right? It's like on Forrest Gump when he's like that's one last thing. Yeah that's right. I'll put it this way. The amount that I used to be on I probably wouldn't have considered coming down and covering Minogue's shift but the amount that I'm on now. Yeah. Yeah that finds me down. Is one of the things that you don't worry

2:23Keyzie:about anymore now that you're earning breakfast money good taste? Yep. I'm worrying about any content. I'm just looking at your outfit there and just thinking, what the...

2:31Mike Minogue:It's a backbone t-shirt. Can I ask a favour of you, actually?

2:34Keyzie:Because I feel like a... Can I say dwarf?

2:37Mike Minogue:Yeah.

2:38Keyzie:Can I say dwarf? Can you say you feel like a dwarf?

2:40Mike Minogue:Who are you referring to?

2:41Keyzie:Well, me. Yeah, that's fine. I'm sitting on a stool and I am barely above the table here and I just want to know... Cushion. I just want to know if I can sit on your sweatshirt to sort of prop myself up a bit. Yeah, I've actually got a jacket there as well. Well, Jase, to describe for the listener, Now, Jase looks like his microphone is down at an angle such that he looks like a hamster suckling from one of those little drinking straws they have. Yeah, yeah, from a teat. On the side of their tank. Yeah.

3:05Mike Minogue:It looks like he's sitting in a high chair for babies. It does. Yeah.

3:09Keyzie:All I need is a bib. Yeah, where did your bib go? I asked for one of those specifically. I actually needed a bib for your loaded wedges that I started hoeing into. I know, they burnt the top of my mouth. I think that might be what's on the dinner. Hey, fellas, in here, by the way, we're at the bridge in Greg Prepleton. the roof, the ceiling has just recently been acoustically treated so there's no echo in here. Have they done that just for this show?

3:31Mike Minogue:Basically the last pub we were at man I said my wife and then they all went my wife so loud that it kind of fucked the whole structure of the building and so they've had to reinforce this one Speaking of which I just saw your first wife's dad in here. Yep Greg, it was kind of awkward but nice to see him. He's down here in a backbone shirt. I hope my first wife's mum isn't coming

3:53Keyzie:Right, okay, yeah, because you had that thing, eh? Yeah. I mean, that's awkward. Do you talk about it?

3:59Mike Minogue:No, I guess it's just more awkward too because she's in the wheelchair as well. Right, okay, and she has got emphysema. She's got emphysema, which remind me, what's that again?

4:09Keyzie:It's when you can't breathe very well. Yeah, that's right. It's when you've been smoking the durries for 50 years. Or durries smoke, because sometimes and often cases both, you know. Can't even walk to the mailbox.

4:18Mike Minogue:Really? Fucking hell.

4:20Keyzie:Because your first wife was like 75, eh?

4:22Mike Minogue:No, no, no, no, no. She wasn't 75.

4:24Keyzie:Oh, she wasn't. No, no, no.

4:25Mike Minogue:She was 75 stone.

4:27Keyzie:Oh, right. Okay.

4:28Mike Minogue:How heavy would that even be? I don't even know what that is. Oh, you're sort of looking at the 300K range. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

4:34Keyzie:I've always found it interesting, Keezy, that whenever we're in Christchurch, that you do invite the in-laws. I'd never do that. No, and I've been...

4:42Mike Minogue:It's because they're ashamed of what you do, whereas mine are kind of accepting of it.

4:46Keyzie:Oh, you mean my... Oh, I see. Yeah.

4:49Mike Minogue:No, I love it. Literally, my wife's walking through the door now. She's got her mum with her. They'll love you despite everything. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so her dad actually was like, I hang up these tables at the front here. And I was like, I'd probably prefer if my family wasn't right at the front. So that's sort of in the back corner there, which is great.

5:09Keyzie:Yeah, it's lovely to see your wife, because I only ever speak to her on the phone. It's good to see her in the flesh.

5:13Mike Minogue:It's good to put a face to the voice, right?

5:15Keyzie:Well, I mean, I know her face. I just mean it's just nice to see her in the flesh. It's a screensaver, isn't it, on your phone? It is. I don't know how that happened. You put it on there.

5:23Mike Minogue:No, I did. I have no problem with it. I just wish she had clothes on. It's my only issue with it. You know what I mean? Jason, you've got a nude photo of my wife on your phone. Like, I don't mind. It's just like if you're in mixed company and you pull your phone out, you know.

5:35Keyzie:You want to see what my screensaver is? It's actually Keezy and Pugs. Oh, no, that's one of my daughters. And the other one is of Keezy and Pugs.

5:44Mike Minogue:I set that as his wallpaper like three years ago, and he doesn't know how to change it. I don't know how to get it. Yeah, yeah. Can you never say, for some reason, you mentioning my wife and the word flesh? Sorry, do we do that on the podcast?

5:56Keyzie:Well, I just meant it's not because I don't, we talk on the phone all the time, but I don't get to see her physically. Can I say physically?

Read the full transcript

6:03Mike Minogue:But why do you need to see her physically?

6:04Keyzie:Well, it's just, you know, because in this day and age, Kesey, it's all very well to communicate via phone and text and stuff. It's nice to have a human interaction one-on-one. But you were saying you felt like she sort of catfished you, though, when she walked in just before? Yeah, she gave me a weird kind of look, actually. But, like, the photos that she sent don't really look like what she looks like now that you've seen her in person? Yeah, they are a bit different, but, yeah. I don't have to bring it up.

6:32Mike Minogue:Sorry about that. Yeah, she does that. Does she do that, does she? Yeah, she catfishes people. The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show Podcast

6:48Keyzie:I tell you what, it's a great little pub though and as she's this boys, as always in Christchurch it's bloody filling up. The thing I love

6:56Mike Minogue:about when we do it in Christchurch is I'm a bit like, oh shit, you know, obviously Minogue's here which is great, but Minogue's not coming and a few people actually texted last night being like, I'm not coming Minogue's not going to be there, I'm not going That was me, I was one of those people I said I'm not coming and they said contractually you're obliged because in my mind... These guys can't do a show by themselves. They need another person. I know you've already done the show this morning, but could you go in and provide a bit of backbone? 100 % of them and I, we really appreciate it because me and Jase need it.

7:23Mike Minogue:Like, we... Between us, we've got nothing. You know what I mean? Yeah, definitely. So we need you and your breakfast content coming through. I'm just going to do the same stuff I did on breakfast this morning.

7:33Keyzie:And your breakfast money to buy the beersies because I've noticed there's no tab here. I've also noticed you guys haven't bought a beer, so yeah, I'm happy to. Can you imagine how catastrophic... And I want you guys to think about this seriously. How catastrophic this afternoon would be if Hootie J wasn't here.

7:48Mike Minogue:That was literally the last OB we did. And it was fucking awesome. In Hooker Ticker. Seriously, I'm not shitting you. The best one we've ever done is Robbie's Christchurch. Aye. People here are agreeing. That's the best one we've ever done because it was just awesome.

8:02Keyzie:Yes, it was pretty good.

8:03Mike Minogue:The second best one we've ever done was Hooker Ticker.

8:06Keyzie:I would have loved to have done Hooker Ticker.

8:08Mike Minogue:I don't know why. It's because everyone was in from out of town for the festival. Well, because their backbone. No, yeah. But because that festival was on, the seafood festival, or wild foods, everyone just went to the same. There was like 400, and then Pugs did a yardie.

8:20Keyzie:Oh, yes, I saw that.

8:22Mike Minogue:And then I was eating test. Honestly, it ruled.

8:24Keyzie:I don't know if you realised this when I was over in Vietnam when the fellas were doing that. Were you guys broadcasting in the 70s? I don't remember. That I went to Vietnam and a couple of weeks there. Right. Because I've seen you having the flashbacks, and I was wondering what that was about. Yeah. Anytime the Westpac helicopter goes over top, Jase just disassociates for about half an hour. I just go down into the fetal position and hide in the bush. Just tell you what, fireworks are a real nightmare around Horty J. Yes, bloody outside. But anyway, so you were in Vietnam. I mean, that's why I wasn't in Hokka Tika.

8:57Keyzie:I genuinely was bummed about missing that. It fucking rules. And if so, in fact, that's why that was one of the best ones you've ever done.

9:03Mike Minogue:Well, to be honest, that was the most worried I've been for a live broadcast because I always freak out whenever the full team's not there because I instantly think, oh, people won't be interested. Yes. But the thing that you forget is, like, people are just interested in coming along to a pub where there's something happening and it's a good time.

9:19Keyzie:Yeah, I mean, there's nothing happening in Hawka Tuka.

9:21Mike Minogue:No.

9:23Keyzie:Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, totally. But you wouldn't know because you weren't there. But there's nothing happening in Christchurch either.

9:28Mike Minogue:No, there's fucking heaps happening in Christchurch, man. Christchurch goes off.

9:31Keyzie:I was thinking, you know, how we're going to do the music thing today. Yeah. The throubler. Yeah. I was thinking of the tune from Deliverance. Do you think that's...

9:38Mike Minogue:Dueling banjos.

9:39Keyzie:Yeah, the dueling. Do you think that's... Do you think I'll get out of here alive if I played that? Wow, I mean, it's a pretty clear shot fired at 100 individuals who are in the same room as you that that's what you think of them. Because you were counting people's fingers when you came in here this afternoon. I was, yes. I thought you were checking for wedding rings. And everyone's... Look at all these fucking backbones with their big bottles of beer. Yeah. Not like us Aucklanders with our, you know, fancy craft beers. Flat whites and long blacks. Yeah.

10:08Mike Minogue:To be fair, Jase, you with a regular bottle looks like a big bot. And that's a height joke. Because he's only a wee fellow.

10:16Keyzie:Actually, on that, I might need two cushions. How long does this thing usually go for, fellas? About this long? No, no, no, one more minute. Okay, what do you got?

10:24Mike Minogue:Yeah, so if we could just do some more content for one more minute.

10:26Keyzie:Because I just want to go and punch some vape.

10:29Mike Minogue:Yeah, seriously, Jase, no vaping in the pub. You're going to need darts, Jase?

10:33Keyzie:I'm not telling you. I bet he fucking does. I bet you do. I am not telling you. Should we knock this thing on the head and go and have a dart? Should we have a dart, Jess? Because if, if, if, by chance I had darts, I don't want anyone knowing about it. Yeah, right. All right? Okay. Well, then just say no. No. Oh, no, you don't have them? He's got so many darts, man. Well, should we knock this thing on the head and not go and have a dart around the back? Have you noticed, by the way, old Keezy punching the darts of late? I know. What's that about? What is that about? That is bullshit. What a mad bastard.

11:03Keyzie:It's pretty fucking fun. He smokes more than I do now. I know. That is bullshit I've had two in the last year I was there for both of them by the way I was there for both of them Yeah fuck Fucking floored me Well you didn't see him in Brizzy No I did

11:15Mike Minogue:He was there with us

11:16Keyzie:He punched about 10 darts I know what I was He punched about 10 darts off me

11:21Mike Minogue:Who I did or he did No he did

11:23Keyzie:Well you were bad enough God it was a nightmare

11:25Mike Minogue:It's because I figured it out It's something to do It is

11:28Keyzie:With your hands It's like Beating off all the time

11:31Mike Minogue:Yeah otherwise Let's wrap it up there Are we still going Yeah we're still going

11:37Keyzie:I'm going to go out and have a vape. Can I come and have a vape, Jase? Sure, man.

11:43Mike Minogue:Hey, thanks for listening. Listen to the Hauraki Big Show, Portal 7, every weekday on Radio Hauraki. We really appreciate it. And the breakfast show, too, if you like what you're hearing from old Manaya. Cheers.
