In short

The hosts wrap up “Literature Special” with banter about sleep problems, melatonin, and what they’re reading, then pivot into crude jokes about crime novels and hentai/manga.

Guests

No guests appear; it’s just the regular host trio (Keyzie/Keezy, Rogie/Rogie, and Jase/Jase).

Key claims

Melatonin helps people fall asleep but doesn’t help stay asleep; large doses may cause constipation and possibly erectile issues. Reading habits: one host finishes books even if he dislikes them; another says most novels end up being crime/detective stories.

Notable examples

A detective noir novel based on the TV series “Bosch”; a “venous/penis flytrap” vagina/penis flytrap hentai/manga image used as a memorable scary example.

0:00Keyzie:Let's get it moving, Keyzie, for fuck's sake, we're running under the gun here. For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. Or Raw Dog It, 4 to 7 every weekday on Radio Hood Aircast. G'day, fellas. Hi, guys. How you going? Oh, what? What are you doing, Rogie? Well, you're in a hurry of a mood, so I know... I'm in a great mood. And I know how you feel about belching, so I thought I'd hit you with a couple of... I'm in a great mood. What are you talking about? Keezy, is he in a great mood, man?

0:40Mike Minogue:I think so. Well, he better be because he's wearing his new shirt. I would be if I was wearing a new shirt. Fresh shirt, hoity jizzinator. That's like what? Still got the tags on it, man.

0:50Keyzie:Hey, I tell you. Nice green, man. That's emerald. I did a big cull of my shirts today. That was an amazing amount of shirts I've never worn.

0:58Mike Minogue:Far out. And what was the...

0:59Keyzie:Whose are they then? Well, you know, some old bastards probably.

1:03Mike Minogue:So explain why that one made the cut.

1:06Keyzie:Well, as I was saying, because Pugs made the same comment, I've worn it before on the show. I don't know why you're saying it's new. I don't know why you're saying it's fucking new. Because generally you rotate three shirts for nine months. So excuse us if we can't remember this one. It goes lemon, boat, tablecloth. Tablecloth, lemon boat.

1:27Mike Minogue:Tablecloth, stalk.

1:28Keyzie:When was the last time I wore my lemon one? It's been a while, man.

1:34Mike Minogue:You've replaced it with your turkey shirt. So it goes boat, turkey, tablecloth, stork, emerald green. Yes. Well, I don't know if it's going to be in heavy rotation. You should also roll up the sleeves a little bit because this is a short-sleeved shirt, everyone, to show off your guns a bit. Oh, should I? Yeah.

1:52Keyzie:Definitely. Because I've got quite good guns and I've got quite tanned arms at the moment. Douche, douche, douche. How good was that? Wow, man, driving in today, and it was like... Beautiful. God, what the hell's that thing? It's sunny. God, that thing in the sky, eh? It feels good. It's insane. And it just made me realise how my brain's already thinking it's winter.

2:14Mike Minogue:It did feel very wintry.

2:16Keyzie:Did it? This morning it did. It was still shithouse this morning.

2:20Mike Minogue:Tell you what sucks is... It hasn't been cold, though. It's been 24 degrees.

2:23Keyzie:Yeah, I know, but it's just been windy and wet. Well, it's been a bit cold. Key's here, yeah. Corner at night, definitely. Because I've been wearing.

2:30Mike Minogue:About 24 in the day. I've had my duvet on at night. Yeah. Just my light summer duvet, but before I was just sheeting it. I can't do just a sheet. Just a sheet. Can't do it. What do you do? It's not heavy enough, so I use a duvet cover with nothing in it. But then a sheet over that. And a sheet first, and then a duvet cover, and then a blanket if I need it, which is more of a throw. Right. You know what I mean?

2:50Keyzie:Yeah. I run an anxiety blanket.

2:53Mike Minogue:One of those really heavy ones?

2:54Keyzie:Yeah, yeah. and I just cannot sleep unless that bastard's on top of me.

2:58Mike Minogue:You've got like five on top of you, right?

2:59Keyzie:Yeah, it's like I've got to feel like I'm buried and there's a massive weight on me in order for me to be able to rest. Just on that note, fellas, another hurr of a sleep last night. I do not know what's going on. I mean, we do. There's something wrong with you. I think it's the big C. Yeah, maybe, maybe. But it's just like all night waking up constantly. Probably more than you. Do you want some melatonin? I'll be honest with you. I woke up a lot, but I was able to go back to sleep last night, which is a bit of a treat. My daughter has started coming back into the room, though. Yeah, that's not good.

3:35No, so I've put a stop to that.

3:37Keyzie:Well, I do, Keezy. I take Vigisom.

3:41Mike Minogue:Is that melatonin? Yes. How much is it? How much melatonin? Veggie what?

3:45Keyzie:Vigisom. Vegisom. It's just a pill. I don't know how much it is.

3:50Mike Minogue:Because I've got these ones from the old Europe there. Oh, these are from you. Have you been? Which have got too much in the...

3:56Keyzie:You simply must.

3:57Mike Minogue:Because I think the legal limit in New Zealand is one milligram or something, isn't it?

3:59Keyzie:Of what?

4:00Mike Minogue:Of mele.

4:01Keyzie:I was reading an article today saying that melatonin makes you constipated.

4:06Mike Minogue:Does it? Yeah. It hasn't fucking worked on me. Holy shit. And impotent. Oh.

4:11Keyzie:That explains a lot, actually.

4:14Mike Minogue:I've been hammering away there and nothing's been happening. Wait, what's impotent?

4:17Keyzie:It means your dick doesn't rise to the occasion. No, no, I can take dumps and...

4:23Mike Minogue:I can take dumps and get stiffies, man. At the same time. If there's two things I can do, it's that. So I don't think it's having that. Is that actually what you read about it?

4:30Keyzie:Me. Who said that? Me. Jase. Is that true? I did.

4:33Mike Minogue:It makes me impotent.

4:35Keyzie:No, it makes you constipated. Large doses of melatonin.

4:40Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show. Weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast. Well, Jase, here's the thing about it, man. It helps you fall asleep, your melatonin, but it doesn't help you stay asleep. Oh, okay. So if you're trying it for that, you can forget about it, especially when the real issue is stress, caffeine, alcohol, too much screens or late meals. Yeah.

5:02Keyzie:Okay. Well, actually, that's what I used to find with the old alcohol was that it would help me. I'd go to sleep, but she weren't no good for staying asleep.

5:11Mike Minogue:But also, it's a terrible sleep. Even if you do stay asleep after being drunk, I wake up and I'm like, oh, my God. I nodded off, but it's not good. Yeah. Plus, you've got probably a bit of adrenaline too with the move and the new shirt. You know, there's a lot going on. There is a lot going on. Which one's a bigger deal for you, moving? Or your new emerald shirt?

5:33Keyzie:I don't know, man. I wore this shirt the other day and I went, oh, I quite like that. And my wife said to me, it makes the green in your eyes come out. I think they had more bloodshot than green. Oh, fuck off, man.

5:47Mike Minogue:You should wear a red shirt, man. My eyes are clear as. They are very clear, Jase. It looks really nice on you. Thanks, man. It does, man. That's why I walked in and I said, nice shirt, man. Yeah, yeah, whatever. I like it on you.

6:01Keyzie:You look like Brad Pitt. I do, eh? Yeah.

6:07Keyzie:But, yeah, no, I'm a little - Really nice. I don't know what's happened to me on the sleep front. I might have to sort that.

6:13Mike Minogue:Yeah, what are you going to do about it? I don't know. Yeah, exactly. What are you going to do about it? What are you going to do about it? What time is your latest coffee?

6:20Keyzie:Oh, fine, thanks. Um, what?

6:23Mike Minogue:What time's your latest coffee in the day?

6:27Keyzie:Midday.

6:27Mike Minogue:Yeah, that's fine.

6:28Keyzie:There's nothing wrong with that. And it's always an iced coffee. What time are you going to bed? Our general vibe is 9.30, caught to 10. Yeah, nice. Or 10-ish. And then you read for a bit? Then I read for 20 minutes. What are you reading?

6:42Mike Minogue:Stoic philosophies.

6:43Keyzie:I can't remember what it's called, to be honest. Very good. Is it? Very good. Can't remember it. It's a fiction, but it's all about a famous painting. I just finished a fiction book, and it was shit. Yeah. You're joking. But I finished it. How many pages? I did finish it. Zero. When do you, because usually, and my wife, because she reads so much, she'll often go, oh, this book's really shit. But you'll finish it? I do finish it. Yeah, that's interesting, eh? It's a weird thing, because, yeah. You think about a movie, and you go, no, fuck this. It goes off. It goes off. You're reading a book and you're going, I'm not enjoying this book.

7:19Keyzie:And yet you get to a point where you have to persevere with it. I can't tell you how much. In fact, I think I got it in Fiji. We might have got it at the airport. Remember when we had a joke before we went? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got that. Well, that'll be garbage. I got that. Well, this is the thing about it, right? It's by some fuckwit. Lee Childs, maybe. Is that right? No, Lee Childs is good. No, it's not him. But he's not either. Yeah, but he's all right. But no, they sell millions and millions of copies. Yeah. but that's like saying what's that the Big Bang Theory that's like saying the Big Bang Theory is good because everybody watches it shit you're just going through it going oh yeah don't need to read that it's not well written Sheldon's pretty funny it's not interesting yeah it was terrible and you said the woman on that you used to no I'm not gonna I won't say that but they based the TV series Bosch you know Bosch yes that's what the book was so it's a detective LA Detective Noir.

8:17Shit.

8:18Mike Minogue:Fuck, I swear all novels, like most novels, are crime novels.

8:21Keyzie:No, Keezy, that's because you - That's not true. No, Keezy, no.

8:27Mike Minogue:I swear every novel I've seen is a crime novel.

8:29Keyzie:That's because you read hentai and fucking comics.

8:33Mike Minogue:How do you know what hentai is? And you don't read hentai, you beat off to it.

8:41Keyzie:Is hentai just purely porn? It's like the Japanese anime, but porn. Is that all it is?

8:46Mike Minogue:Yeah.

8:46Keyzie:It must be not just porn.

8:48Mike Minogue:Look, I haven't looked. Pugs is your man? Oh, yeah. I asked Pugs about it. There's a man who specialises in being a deviant and Japanese stuff. Yeah. He's sitting in Studio B there, and he's probably got hentai on his computer screen.

9:01Keyzie:Okay. Nice. I didn't realise genuinely that it was just porn.

9:04Mike Minogue:Yeah, because it's based off of – a lot of them, I think, are based off of the manga. They make like R18 manga comics over there. They do. Which is like all sorts of bad stuff. I should get one when I go to Japan. I'll bring it back for you. You used to watch it when I was a kid, like 18 or whatever. R18, so I didn't make sure I wasn't too young. And there was a woman there. She was Japanese. Is this a hentai? I don't know. Manga. Manga. Manga. Because that was all the rates when it started coming over, you know, becoming a bit more mainstream. And there was a woman there, voluptuous she was, Jase.

9:36They tend to be, from what I've seen. Japanese, she was. and she was seducing lots of men. Anyway, it turned out that her vagina, if I can call it that, was actually a venous flytrap.

9:51Mike Minogue:A penis flytrap. Thank you. High five. Yeah, so that was scary. I still remember the imagery now. And you've been scared of them ever since. Vaginas. Yeah. That sounds really hot, actually. I have to look into it. Into the vagina. Don't get too close. Thanks for listening. I'll have that honker of yours. What?

10:11Keyzie:What are you fucking dabbling on about?

10:15Mike Minogue:I reckon you could seduce her. It's nearly Friday, feels. If you wear that new shirt.

10:20Keyzie:What happens if I wear my new shirt? You're going to seduce the cartoon lady. Oh, right. And then she'll devour my cock with a... I'm going to have to put a warning on this. Nah, man, it's all G. Yeah, fuck it. It's all good.

10:35Mike Minogue:Hey, listen to the big show, 4 or 7. 4 or 7 weekdays on radio. I'm so lucky.
