In short

The hosts riff on being “rooted” as the year drags on, missing family, and upgrading lifestyle—especially renting bougie apartments with pools—while debating frugality vs spending, and sharing stories about expensive hotel stays and travel.

Guests

No specific guests are introduced; it’s a banter segment featuring recurring hosts/regulars (named in the dialogue as Jase, Keezy/Kenzie, and Phil/Lee).

Key claims

Spending money can be justified if you’ve earned it; “everyone should leave each other nothing” (parents should spend their money, even via reverse mortgages); travel value depends on region (Southeast Asia stretches budgets; Europe “bougie” costs more).

Notable examples

Sky Tower rotating restaurant/penthouse rent jokes; a $2,800 “presidential suite” hotel room used for broadcasting; a $3,000 US/night Central Park window during filming; Vietnam vs Europe travel comparisons; multi-level marketing (Avon/Tupperware) and door-to-door sales jokes.

0:00For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok or Raw Doggett. 4 to 7 every weekday on Radio Horeke. Yeah, woo! Woo! That's how we do it, fellas. G'day, fellas. That's how we suck on that big old chilli doll. Okay, um... Chilli doll. Disclaimer.

0:29Keyzie:I just want to... Hang on a minute. It's chilli dogs, man. What's wrong with the second honour of the chilli dog?

0:34Mike Minogue:He's giving off dirty mokey vibes. Very dirty. I am so ready for this year to be over. I am fucking rooted. I hear you. Over. I just want it to be over. Yes. October. You know?

0:45Keyzie:I'm with you there. I'm totally with you there. I wish this year would go on forever. Oh, same. Come on, Keezy. I tell you what, and I've never had this as badly as I do now. Yeah. I just want to see my girls. Oh, right. That's nice. And I'm like, fucking, can we, can you just get over here, please? That's nice. When are they coming again? Christmas. Oh, well, one's coming on the 20th. Yeah. And it's like, that's ages away. Why don't you go over? And then one's coming on the 25th. Well, she's arriving on the 24th and staying at her partner's parents' house. Going to get pissed up there. And I was like, fucking what?

1:25You've got to be joking me, man. Surely not.

1:27Keyzie:You know, and I just. Do you have a stand for that, man? I just, my wife and I were sitting in the lounge today and it was like, oh, you know, if we're on holiday right now, we'd be going for a swim.

1:35Mike Minogue:Yeah.

1:36Keyzie:And she was like, oh, don't even. Don't even say that.

1:38Mike Minogue:But you could go for a swim.

1:40Keyzie:Well, no, not today I couldn't because the tide wasn't right.

1:44Mike Minogue:Right, so if you're on holiday, the tide would have been right. No, but like if I'm on holiday. You can either go early or later or whatever. Yeah, right. Yeah.

1:54Keyzie:Might do a couple of nude night swims.

1:56Mike Minogue:You know what you need? A pool, man, because you're getting an apartment. You should get one with a pool.

2:00Keyzie:I was just telling Keezy Mogi, found an amazing apartment today. Fuck, it's cool. Two grand a week. Oh, three.

2:10Mike Minogue:Three grand a week. You'll have to show me. Yeah. No, don't, because he'll swoop in there. I'll rent it. You know what Mogi's like. He'll come in there. I've got extra cash coming in now, Phil, so I'll be renting up a storm there.

2:19Keyzie:Because we were talking, my wife and I, and it's like we could just get, you know, We've just been looking at apartments in a particular range, and then we're like, well, hang on, wasn't the whole point of this to get something quite bougie? Yeah. So what are we doing? So now we've gone, okay, let's up the scale a bit here. That's right. And because we're getting rent for our house, why not? Exactly.

2:46Mike Minogue:This is what I like about you, though, Jase, is you insist on wearing free hats. You know what I mean? Yeah. You buy yourself – I finally got yourself a nice car, but it's nothing too out there, you know what I mean? Yeah, man. You've got that old phone that you've had for 10 years that's fucked. But you could actually maybe get some nice stuff if you wanted to. I could. And you deserve it, man. But it's also... It's just... Can you not be that nice, Keezy? It's freaking me out. It's just...

3:12Keyzie:I've been so used to all my life being broke. Well, I think it's a good thing to have. Certainly better that way than the other way around. And especially with rent, where you're like, fuck, I'm just throwing this money away.

3:23Mike Minogue:Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Well, like, my attitude towards stuff is, like, for example, I don't want my parents to leave me anything. No. I want them to just spend it all. I want them to leave me with debt. Yeah, I'm trying to get my mum to do a reverse mortgage. Yes. Right, which is where you... It's where the bank gives her all the money and then she can just spend it. Yeah, spend it all. Yeah, hard out. Because I don't want my parents to leave me anything. Because what I don't want to do is work really hard and then leave my kids all this money and then, I don't know. No. Everyone should just leave each other's nothing.

3:52Mike Minogue:Nothing, yeah.

3:52Keyzie:And I've had that exact same conversation with my mum, which is, I don't want your money. You just spend it, man. Go and fucking spend it.

4:00Mike Minogue:Go and spend it. Go around the world. Go and do whatever. Yep.

4:03Keyzie:But, yeah.

4:04Mike Minogue:So this is what it is. Jase, go spend your money, man, because you've got so much. Like, you've got so much money. You could be renting the penthouse of the tallest tower in all. Fucking hell, man.

4:18Keyzie:I don't know what planet you're living on there, Kenzie. Are you renting the rotating restaurant at the top of the Sky Tower? Oh, that'd be cool. That's cool, man. Remember when we went, oh, I don't know if I can talk about that, where we did the show from the, you know, that was like$4 ,000, $5 ,000 a night or something?

4:36Mike Minogue:Oh, the hotel room?

4:37Keyzie:Yeah.

4:37Mike Minogue:The presidential suite? It was, yeah. Yeah, that's a hotel, man. I was thoroughly unimpressed. I was like, really? Yeah, so was I. For that kind of money. I was underwhelmed. Maybe I could get behind two grand. Yep, two grand because it had like, you know, massive bedroom, massive lounge. It was bigger, separate rooms. Huge bathroom, big bath, which I did some broadcasting from. Presidential? Presidential suite, yeah. President of what? Harvey Styles,$2 ,800 it was. Oh,$2 ,800. Well, there you go. That's about right. Was it Harvey Styles? And what's his name? Harry Styles. Harvey Styles. And Justin Bieber.

5:10The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast.

5:19Keyzie:What's the most expensive room you've ever stayed in? Do you know? No. When I first got with the missus, we went and stayed somewhere, and it was like 700 bucks a night or something like that. Fuck, nice day. Is that Wellington? Yeah, it is. But we've been working like dogs, but she couldn't enjoy it. She's like, it's too much money. Yeah, there is a balance. And I was like, well, we've paid for it. Yes. So you just enjoy it or you just stay in the room and I'll enjoy it? Yes. Because I'm going to enjoy it. Yeah. Because I've paid for it. I work like a dog. I'm having a nice holiday. My wife is exactly the same.

5:59Keyzie:She's like, I just don't feel comfortable spending that amount of money. And I say, okay, we'll just go and stay in a shitty little place for$8 ,000 a night.

6:08Mike Minogue:Well, that's the thing. If you go on holiday in Southeast Asia, Jase, like Vietnam, for example, have you been there before?

6:13Keyzie:Yes, I have. Yes, Kesey.

6:15Mike Minogue:You can stay in the bougiest places and spend so much money because it gets you so much more. But if you go to Europe and then you try and be bougie. You simply must. Holy fuck, man. That is like another level. Yeah, I can imagine. And you go to a nice restaurant. It's beautiful. But it does reach a certain point with me as well. And I'm not a frugal person where I go, fuck it out. I think you are. You are frugal. You strike me as being very tight-fisted. Can you tell my wife that? My wife is very sensible. Even more tight-fisted. My wife is very sensible with money and frugal. Yeah. I literally have, like, when it comes to Christmas presents, I don't know what I want because I literally, as soon as I want something, I just buy it.

6:52Mike Minogue:Yes.

6:52Keyzie:You know? Yeah, you strike me, and I've said this before, as a gadget kind of guy. You like your gadgets. I used to know an actor. What are those things called? Fleshlights. I used to know, well, I still do know him. He's a Wellington actor, actually, and he was forever turning up on set with a new gadget. Do I do that? What is a gadget? Well, you know. I know what a gadget is, but what would that be? That would be the latest iPhone. For Jase, it would be like a Walkman. Yes, it would be something like that, but he was suddenly into camping. So he'd come on set with a new headlamp, and then he'd come onto set with.

7:29Keyzie:What the fuck? I know, I know. I'm trying to think who this actor is. And it was like, why do you need all this shit? How does that? When have I ever done that? You always were in headlamps. Yeah, or headlamp Casey. I just feel like you like your games, you like your vehicles, you like your stuff.

7:47Mike Minogue:I like old shit. I like playing PlayStation as my only gadget and a big TV, and everything else I like is old. I like old analog stuff, you know?

7:56Keyzie:That's a great shot by Hay, by the way. Back foot drive keys, you see? That just muscled it. Just smashed the shit out of it. I've told you this before in terms of the hotel room. I think it was$3 ,000 US. Oh, is that when you're over? Yeah, doing moon But you don't pay for that No I didn't pay for it It was insane Was that in New York? Yeah Yes It was insane 3 ,000 US per night Per night You were also filming in there though Yeah, we were filming So Lee was like Fuck it Should we just hire this place for the night? And imagine a window twice that size Of the one here? Of that window there Twice the size So for the listeners

8:35Mike Minogue:That's a window that's about 2 metres by 1 metre

8:38Keyzie:Way up in the sky looking straight down the guts of Central Park. Oh, yeah, get it. It was fucking insane.

8:44Mike Minogue:Was that funded? Yes. So that's where the budget came from? Yeah, totally. It was New Zealand on air.

8:50Keyzie:And boy, was there a party that night.

8:53Mike Minogue:What did you get up to, man?

8:54Keyzie:Yeah, tell us all about it. Fah, you fellas.

8:59Mike Minogue:Yeah. It was a shocker.

9:01Keyzie:It's good fun. But yeah, so. Anyway, well, I'm looking forward to seeing this new apartment because I was sort of having a little look for you and I thought, I bet this is sort of his range he's operating in. See if I can guess your new range. Because the range I was looking in, that was far cool. Yeah, yeah. Well, that was the thing. We've got to up the stakes here. You do. And that's right. And if it's been offset, then essentially you're only paying rent, which you haven't done for God knows how long. 20-odd years, yeah. That's right. A little bit of mortgage you've been on, and then, yeah, you're paying a little bit of rent.

9:33How good. Yeah, man. You're paying half the cost of a sick pad. Totally. Get it linear.

9:37Mike Minogue:Get on you, Jase. Man, you've got to have us around, man. And you just have to increase the hours for your missus. You know, she can just do a bit of overtime.

9:42Keyzie:Well, I'm trying to get her to get into this new business, actually, with a mate of hers, which I think suits her way better and is way better dosh.

9:51Mike Minogue:Isn't that the multi-level marketing one you were telling me about? Door-to-door sales? That was when you just have to get 10 of your mates involved and then they get 10 of their mates involved. Yeah. And then you can all be rich. That's good. What's it called? Yeah, what was that? Arbon? Nah. Avon. Avon, yes. That's a different one. Selling fizz sticks or smoothies or something. And then the Tupperware one as well. I get behind the sex toy one. No, you get in front of it. Hey, we're going to have to record a disclaimer purely for that last comment. This is a big show. Sorry, look at Pugs.

10:24Keyzie:He's looking absolutely filthy.

10:26Mike Minogue:Yeah, man. Four to seven weekdays, Radio Hodaki. Big show.
