In short

The hosts wrap up “The Hauraki Big Show” with banter about “warm-up” vs “warm-down” routines, then shift into a comedic critique of each other’s on-air word choices and mispronunciations (e.g., “mealy-mouthed,” “whereupon,” “umbridge/umbrage,” “heckles/hackles,” “bait/beat,” “performance/performance”), plus discussion of calling out partners’ speech errors.

Guests

No external guests. Participants are the regular hosts: Jase, Keezy, and Pugs (a producer/feedback giver).

Key claims

Warming up improves early-morning delivery; reviewing the show afterward would help performance. Misused phrases can be “pretentious” or annoying. “Mealy-mouthed” means garbling words/avoiding frank speech.

Notable examples

“turn down the racism,” “mealy-mouthed,” “whereupon,” “take umbrage,” “getting your heckles raised” vs “hackles up,” “bait the Wallabies” vs “beat them,” and “generally” used repeatedly on Love Island UK.

0:00Keyzie:For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok or Raw Dog It. 4 to 7 every weekday on Radio Hode Echo. Oh, g'day, fellas.

0:16Jason Hoyte:Morning. Hi, Jase. Morning. Hello. Morning, Jase. I quite like the idea of doing a potty after the show. I don't.

0:24Mike Minogue:I prefer warming up with ours because that's how we do it, is we warm up with our potty. gets your brain working, gets the chemistry flowing. Yes. True. I agree. And when the show ends, you grab your headphones, you drop them off, and you get the hell out of here.

0:38Jason Hoyte:Unless you're pugs. I think I just like the chill out. I think I just like the, cool, we've just done that. Now let's have a little wind down. Also, I agree with you on the warm-up front, but I don't have to do it every day. No. But what we could do, Jase, and if you're up for it, we could do a warm-down and a warm-up. Yeah, Jase, and a little extra 10 minutes after the show on Monday? No.

0:56Mike Minogue:That'd be good for our potty numbers too because it's an extra podcast. It's five extra podcasts a week. It's more downloads, Jase.

1:00Keyzie:Does it actually work that way?

1:02Mike Minogue:Yeah, 100%.

1:03Keyzie:What we could do is the warm-up for the show, right, which is what we normally do, and then a review of the show afterwards.

1:10Mike Minogue:And a real honest review too where, like, there's no hurt feelings and it's just genuine feedback on everyone's performance on the show. I don't want to be bagging you the whole time, though. Well, you wouldn't be, you know? Yeah. Because, like, for example, today's show was fucking slick. You know what I mean? Do you think so? So in that situation, it'd be more compliments.

1:33Keyzie:I actually, well, funnily enough, I actually really felt today with the show that I missed the warm-up because my brain wasn't functioning for a while there, actually.

1:42Mike Minogue:And if there's any time you need a warm-up, it's at frickin' 6 a.m. in the morning. Yes. When you're used to talking at 4 p.m. So the start, and that's why, if people are listening, and that's why they've always wondered, why does the breakfast sound so terrible at like 6 till 8.30? It's because they haven't warmed up. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And then at 8.30 they're finally okay. They start getting it right and then it's the end of the show. That's right. They finally come right and then it finishes. Whereas if they did a little warm up, for those guys I'd probably recommend like a 45-minute warm up.

2:10Mike Minogue:Yes. And then their show might actually sound decent at about 6.

2:13Jason Hoyte:Or what also might help is instead of like just their normal chitty chat on the podcast that they do after the show, they could spend that time reviewing that day's show and figuring out how terrible they sounded for the next day. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

2:24Keyzie:A very much what went wrong kind of look at things.

2:27Mike Minogue:Well, let's just practice this now. Pugs. Hello. What do you think in terms of Jase and I? Because, you know, you're traditionally a producer, so you just tagging it out as we need you. You do a very good job of doing that. Oh, thank you. But in terms of your feedback, if you had to give it honestly for today,

2:42Jason Hoyte:for me and Jase, what would it be? This is my issue with being a producer is I'm entirely too self-critical that I very rarely think about what you guys are doing.

2:50Keyzie:I mean, you should be because you make a lot of mistakes. That's exactly why I'm self-critical.

2:54Mike Minogue:Thank you. Okay, we'll put all that to the side. You're glaring work-ons and stuff. We'll put those to the side. Like, for example, Jase, what do you think he could have done better today just to really take this unique opportunity to the next level?

3:07Jason Hoyte:Probably just turn down the racism a little bit.

3:10Mike Minogue:No, but that's a key part of his content, you know what I mean?

3:12Jason Hoyte:Like he's built a career on that. That doesn't make it all right, though. That doesn't mean it's good, you know what I'm saying?

3:17Keyzie:I'm not changing who I am at this point in my career. Can't change your stripes, eh, Jase? Well, exactly. Now, Keezy, I mean, he butchered a few sentences today. 100 % thank you for your feedback. Oh, like in the sports news and stuff. 100%. Yeah.

3:32Mike Minogue:And even around the sports news, not even just that, I said a few things.

3:35Keyzie:Yeah, you were very mealy-mouthed.

3:37Mike Minogue:What is that? What? Mealy-mouthed? Yes. Have you never heard that phrase? Never heard that before. I love it when you bring up phrases from, like, ye olde English times. Mealy-mouthed. Yes.

3:47Keyzie:It means you're sort of garbling your words.

3:51Mike Minogue:Garbling. That's a good word, isn't it?

3:54Keyzie:Yeah, it's great. Garbling.

3:56Mike Minogue:Mealy mouth is actually afraid to speak frankly.

4:00Keyzie:Oh, okay.

4:01Mike Minogue:So you got that wrong. So me. I'm going to start. Yes, you.

4:05Keyzie:You're very mealy mouth there, Pugs.

4:08Jason Hoyte:He laughed when I said brast off earlier. Like that was a really old phrase, which it is, but coming from him, you shouldn't be calling it out.

4:14Keyzie:My Green Dad would say, God, brassed off. Why is that, Green Dad?

4:19Mike Minogue:But I'm going to start Googling these weird phrases you keep saying. Yes. Because they're probably wrong and I'm just letting you.

4:24Keyzie:Well, for example, one of the ones I used the other day, which I couldn't believe you hadn't heard of, getting your gander up.

4:31Mike Minogue:Nobody had heard that before. No, I'd heard of that. Gander up. Really? I hadn't heard of the heckles one. What about Brickle? He's got it. I said that. Yeah, I've heard of that.

4:39Keyzie:You've never heard of someone getting their heckles raised.

4:41Mike Minogue:I don't even know what a heckle is. What's getting your heckles raised? It's like a dog game.

4:45Keyzie:You know when a dog gets fired up, they spike up with their fur. I don't know if it's heckle.

4:51Mike Minogue:Okay, getting your hackles up. Thank you. Is to become angry, annoyed, or defensive. Yes, this is so good. Getting your heckles up.

5:00Jason Hoyte:You're just used to the word heckle from your comedy days.

5:03Mike Minogue:Yeah, I am.

5:04Jason Hoyte:The Hauraki Big Show. Weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast.

5:12Mike Minogue:What are some of the other phrases you say?

5:15Jason Hoyte:Umbridge. Taking umbridge. He always uses. Ad infinitum. Ad nauseam.

5:21Mike Minogue:To fill one's boots. That's the one he always says. Fill your boots. To have or do as much of something as one wants. That makes sense. That's correct. Yeah, thanks, man. What was it? To take umbridge. Take umbridge, yeah. Umbrage, I think. When you say take umbridge, what do you mean by that, Jase?

5:38Keyzie:Take issue? Yeah, to take an issue with something. You don't just want to say that. It's like me saying something and you, Kesey, doing your normal thing. I didn't think I did that.

5:47Mike Minogue:Is that my normal thing? To take umbrage is to feel sad or melancholy. Melancholy. To bristle. No, to feel sad or melancholy. So, again, wrong. So that's incorrect.

6:01Keyzie:Yeah, I don't agree with that.

6:03Mike Minogue:Do you take umbrage with it?

6:05Keyzie:Yes, I do.

6:06Mike Minogue:No, you're right. You're right because it's actually to feel offended or annoyed. Yes. Thank you. Ah, the old switcheroo there. Classic. But, okay, so I stumbled over a few words there, Pugs. Anything else you think I could do better? And I'm being 100 % honest.

6:20Keyzie:I often use the phrase whereupon. Whereupon. Whereupon I then.

6:26Mike Minogue:That's so fucking pretentious. That's like so many words. Shakespearean.

6:32Keyzie:Why is that pretentious?

6:33Mike Minogue:Because it's whereupon I then went to the bakery. Just say then I. Just say I went to the bakery. I'm just trying to

6:41Keyzie:I'm just trying to expand your guys Vocabulary alright Yeah but I take umbrage Umbrage

6:49Mike Minogue:Cause the original one was At the weekend I say at the weekend now Not on the weekend And by accident Not on accident

6:57Keyzie:God they used to piss me off

7:00Jason Hoyte:Zoe's rolling the fuck out of her eyes in studio

7:03Keyzie:Yeah but on accident Come on man

7:07Mike Minogue:Problem is I actually go home and notice My parents are saying things slightly incorrectly, like on accident. They don't do this, but the classic one is when you say, oh, the All Blacks bait the wallabies. They bait them instead of beat them. Beat them. Beat them is the answer. Yeah, that's right. I've never heard anyone say that.

7:29Keyzie:I've never heard that in my life. I've never heard anyone say bait. Kids used to always say it.

7:32Mike Minogue:I bait them. We bait them. And then the other one was bet them. You didn't bet them either. You beat them. My

7:38Keyzie:Since we're getting into Getting pissed off With the way people say things The biggest bugbear

7:44Mike Minogue:Oh you were saying It's when people speak Any language Not English

7:48Keyzie:My biggest bugbear Is When people say Performance Instead of Performance I've never heard that That does my head in I've never heard it And it happens All the time Wow It was a very poor performance

8:07Mike Minogue:It's because you're hearing that phrase a lot.

8:09Keyzie:And it's performance, not performance.

8:12Jason Hoyte:There was this woman on the latest season of Love Island UK that would talk about how authentic she was as a person and how everything she said was, she was trying to say genuinely, but she would say generally every single time. Generally. No, I generally meant this. I generally. So she vaguely meant that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

8:30Keyzie:I'm surprised you notice anyone talking on that show, Pugs. Isn't it just one big buzzy party? It is.

8:36Jason Hoyte:That is a boozy party Are you going to do any boozy parties this weekend?

8:42Keyzie:I'm going to the 30th tomorrow night

8:44Jason Hoyte:We'll see if it turns into a boozy party I ran into the issue with My partner the other day When you tell them that they've said something wrong Do you call it out in the moment? Totally you do man And really loudly Because I waited till later But see you take me aside I go hey just quickly No no no no Not like that It sounds so condescending, right? Darling, listen, by the way. We're sounding condescending in the moment in front of other people, right? No, but you can do it humorously. What did she say that was wrong? She said canopies. She said canopies. That's right. But then afterwards when I was like, oh, just by the way, I think it's canopies.

9:22Jason Hoyte:And I said it like that so that it was chill. And then she was like, I said that word like 15 times in the space of two minutes. You should have pulled me up. I was like, no, I was trying to do the right thing. So what you should have done then is gone,

9:34Mike Minogue:canopy is like a tent. That's exactly what I did after the fact. Yeah, yeah, or like a canopy of trees. Yeah. You want us to serve trees.

9:43Keyzie:I mean, I pull my wife up all the time on that sort of stuff.

9:46Mike Minogue:What does she say that gets inside your goat? Fuck off.

9:50Keyzie:Oh, what does she say that gets inside my goat?

9:52Mike Minogue:Yeah, what you pull her up on.

9:57Keyzie:She's actually very good with words, I've got to be fair. She's a prolific reader. So she's probably got more of a vocabulary than I do She's probably less annoying with it as well

10:08Mike Minogue:If she's going to the bakery Does she say whereupon I then went to the bakery? Or does she say I'm going to the fucking bakery Fuck off

10:17Keyzie:She doesn't swear Keezy Because that's a sign of a very low intellect Didn't you say before that she says fuck off? Yeah totally

10:26Mike Minogue:I was waiting for the pause there for Pugs to go to the next tune Like that was the end of the verse Like that was a kicker

10:32Jason Hoyte:It was a good kicker, man. That's the end of the break there, man. We're just in radio mode right now, guys.

10:37Keyzie:My vapes run out. I'm not happy about it. Shame. Do you want to use this one? You can suck on that one. I'm not sucking on your... Oh, jeez, I nearly said that then.

10:47Mike Minogue:Just for the listeners, I was holding up a pen. It paid... Hoody J's filthy.

10:52Jason Hoyte:We're on the podcast, guys. It's no holds barred. I know, I know.

10:55Keyzie:Hey, thanks for listening.

10:57Mike Minogue:Absolutely.

10:57Jason Hoyte:It's been fun doing brekkie for a couple of days, actually. I've really enjoyed it. Have you? I think we're dramatically... Well, I mean, I think, despite my mistakes, dramatic improvement from the first day to the second day, even though I was absolutely fucking knackered this morning. Yeah. Just delirious. But I think that made it more funny.

11:11Keyzie:I thought the first day was way better. Okay. So just sort it out.

11:18Mike Minogue:I thought we'd just run out of gas halfway through a yarn. This is The Big Show. We'll be back again, 4 p.m. Monday. And if you're listening to this on the podcast, thank you very much for joining us. Have a lovely weekend. Bye. Wait, it is a podcast. Everyone's listening to it on podcast. Yeah. It's fucking hell.
