In short

The hosts wrap up by discussing a recent theatre outing (A View from the Bridge) and then pivot to sleep problems, anxiety/cat-related wakeups, and how “catastrophising” makes worries worse. They also mention Eckhart Tolle’s “be in the moment” idea and compare firm beds improving back issues.

Guests

No named guests appear in this transcript. The “guest” references are to Beulah Kuale (a previous podcast guest) and theatre performers (Bueller, the daughter, and the wife) in the play.

Key claims

Sparse staging with one chair worked well; the audience’s vantage point changes what you notice; anxiety spirals before tasks are done; firm beds reduce back pain.

Notable examples

Balcony vs stage seating; chair used as a car/space-rocket; cat waking them at ~4am; packing a removalist truck in dreams to sleep.

0:15Mike Minogue:G'day fellas! Backbone! Hello.

0:21Mike Minogue:How are you Jase man? You're not shaving today. You all good man? Yeah I'm great. You okay? I'm real good. You all good man?

0:26Keyzie:I'm real good man. I want to help you if I ask if you're all good, man. Yeah, no, look, I'm tippity top. Tippity top. How was the play last night? Brilliant. You like that shit? Brilliant. Wow, really? Yes. Great. Are you all good, though? One of the best plays I've seen. Wow.

0:47Mike Minogue:Very, very good. So best play you've seen this year? Yes. Definitely. You see what I mean about the ending there? Yes. Plane to the raked. Where were you sitting? We were on the balcony. You went and saw a view from the bridge last night with Beulah Kuale. Yes. Who was a guest a couple of weeks ago there. What did your wife think? She loved it. She cried. Wow. Yeah. I think I had a go at that as well.

1:14Keyzie:I cried as well. Yeah. I should go again. And I can say that throughout it, Kesey, there was a lot of... There is a real... Yeah, yeah. Moment where you're like... Oh!

1:28Mike Minogue:Isn't it? It's quite a famous play. You should be going to it. It's just not at all our cup of tea.

1:35Keyzie:What I will say is they played the tension. Sorry, it's just not. They played the tension beautifully. Yeah. Beautifully. It was very, very, very good. Five buzzies. Fellas. That's pretty good, isn't it? Five buzzies. That's great, man. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Superb. Where did you sit, sorry? Balcony. Balcony. Oh, yeah, good. Yeah, yeah, it was good. I'd like to go somewhere else because I was right on the stage. Yes, okay. Which was great because you're looking up there. And it's quite good because I think every vantage point, you see things and you also miss things. Yes. So every sort of area that you sit, you catch things that you wouldn't if you were sitting somewhere else and you miss things.

2:21Yeah, yeah. It's a famous play, right? It's been out for a long time.

2:24Mike Minogue:You guys haven't seen it or didn't know the moments in it? I've never read it.

2:29Keyzie:Right.

2:29Mike Minogue:I've never seen it. I knew the play.

2:32Keyzie:I've never known it to be run, actually. And actually an old mate was there who's a real theatre chap, and he was saying what he loved about it, because usually when that play is put on, A View from the Bridge, it's a massive production. Right. And he said the last time he saw it, you know, it was huge. Right. And a massive cast. And they had like people shouting from apartments, and they had the whole set, you know, and like when immigration comes, it was like eight of them with their, you know, billy things. Billy clubs. But that's what I really liked about this production. It was very sparse.

3:07Keyzie:Yeah. Very well directed. One chair. It was tight, Keezy.

3:11Mike Minogue:What kind of chair was it? It was a dining room table chair, a wooden chair. Wow. Yes, that was it. And what did they turn the chair into? Like a car? Just a chair. A car into it.

3:20Keyzie:Yeah, they had like a driving scene where they, was there anything worse? It was a spaceship. Was it a horse? They laid it down at one point. Oh, wow. And he was lying on his back, and it was like a space rocket. And that was representing his orgasm. Wow. Maybe I will go see it. I think the one thing I hated most when I used to do auditions. Oh, don't say it. That I used to do auditions is you had to pretend to be driving.

3:44Mike Minogue:Your wife had to do that in her play.

3:46Keyzie:And I just mocked her. Oh, she did too. I mocked her, and she said all of us were like, oh, fuck, can we just be in? It's the steering wheel, eh? Yeah, it's that. And then it's different heights. That's not good. And you're just like, no, no. I was really worried for her safety because she sold it so well that she was driving. I thought she was going to get into an accident. Yeah, yeah, totally. She didn't, thankfully. Spoiler alert. But no, it was very good. Bueller's very good, isn't he? Oh, he's superb. He looks, and you know what I mean? It was weird because I thought, because I've not met him before, but I thought he'd be bigger.

4:13Yeah.

4:13Keyzie:Because he seems big on the stage. He's just got a big presence. He does. And I thought the daughter was magnificent. And the wife was amazing. Yes, yes. They were all great. Yeah, they were. Yeah. Ten out of ten buzzies, Keezy. That's five buzzies, Jase, man. We're not for plays.

4:30Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast. What did you do last night? What did I do? Sorry, there's people outside the window and everyone's distracted now. What did I do last night? You all good, man? No, I had like one hour's sleep last night. Same. What were you thinking about?

4:54Keyzie:What were you worrying about, Keezer? How's your life, brother? You should have called me, man. I would have, you know, I would have talked you to sleep. I would have talked you to sleep, man. Probably would have. Do you want to know what I was, I'll open up about what I was awake about, if you like, and then that might help you to share with us. Okay, you go. The fucking cat woke me up. It's not helping. About four o 'clock in the morning. And so, you know what, the trouble is I've got is the cat's fine, but then I get up and I have to go to the bathroom and it hears me and it's like, I'll go and see what old Mogi's up to in the pisser.

5:24And comes in for a pack because I'm doing one of my sit-down wheeves. And then that's it. The cat's up, comes and bangs on our door for a car, and then I get up 4.30. So I've been up since 4.30. Well, 4.00. Yeah, so I've got some things going on in my life too, Keezy.

5:41Mike Minogue:Sounds cool, man. I had this situation where I had three jobs to do. And in my head at night. And your dream? No, no, in real life. And in my head at night, the jobs were massive and very overwhelming. Right. And then I couldn't sleep. I was like, oh, my God, I don't even know if I can do these jobs. And then eventually, like at 7 a.m., I had like two hours sleep or something. And then when I woke up, I went and did the jobs, and they were done in about an hour. Yeah. Right. And they were totally fine. And so it was this weird situation where my brain was making things way worse than they actually were.

6:15Mike Minogue:Which I assume is some sort of anxiety about something. Yes, it is. Which I'd never get

6:21Keyzie:You should listen to Eckhart Tolle I do it all the time now It's all about being in this moment now Because all the grief we cause Ourself, Keezy, is worrying about the future Or thinking about the past We forget the now The moment we're in right now I tell you just on the cat front Oh yeah, so that's me sorted No, tell me You're telling him about the cat Whenever we get up, Jizz Your cat Our cat She likes to bite us Yeah She bites us Like affectionately Yes It's like A nip Yeah but cat teeth are sharp man Yeah And so you'll go to be making a coffee And my dude's just flopping around there Thank God it's not right at the floor I'll be in all sorts of trouble

7:10Mike Minogue:It'll give it time It'll give it all

7:13Keyzie:Your balls are Your balls are yeah But she does Or you know We'll be chilling out on the couch and she'll be sitting in your crotch and then she'll just bite your arm. She'll just bite it. Well, she's bored. And it's like, oh, fuck. Yeah, she is.

7:25Mike Minogue:She wants to go outside. She wants to hunt skinks. She wants to jump off the window. You live in a zoo. As far as Jizz is concerned. Fuck, it was funny at Jace's dinner when Jizz did something and you went, no, Jizz. Oh, I mean, you know what I mean? I believe she didn't realise that you had named the cat Jizz. No. That was so funny.

7:50Keyzie:I didn't care about my wife knowing about the name. It was more my daughter knowing about the name. She would be fucking mortified.

7:56Mike Minogue:Your wife turned around and was just like, sorry, what did you just say?

8:00Keyzie:No, Jizz.

8:01Mike Minogue:Sorry, who?

8:04Keyzie:But yes. Well, that's no good, Keezy. That's no good, mate.

8:08Mike Minogue:It's something that, for me, it's a sleep thing. And if I don't go to sleep, which I'm usually very, very good at, Only recently in the last two months. Yes. This has happened to me three or four times. Yeah. Well, I started having those sorts of things when I was older as well. Certainly sleep, but certainly for me it was panic attacks. And it would have been, I was 37, so slightly older. But I think the thing for me is because my wife can get anxious at times, I put more pressure on myself to be the one that doesn't. That's right. Which means I then shoulder a whole lot of stuff being like, oh, I've got to look after this so she doesn't have to worry about it.

8:43Mike Minogue:And it's never even a big deal. It's not even a big thing But lately I'm like Holy shit That's right You know Which is weird There's been a bit of extra worry Hasn't there But today After I did the jobs I was like What the fuck was I worried about But it's not even about the worry No It's not even about the jobs What happens is Your brain gets into a cycle Yeah Of making things worse than they are Spiralling Spiralling Catastrophising And it's not even about the things anymore No It's about your brain Getting into a habit Of making things worse than they appear Which is not good But until I could actually go and do the thing you know there's no way of stopping it when I was over in Australia there and doing a hell of a lot of staff things partying and I would get to a Sunday by the time I'd get to a Sunday there and I'd be dreaming about the only way that I could sleep would be because I was working as a furniture removalist was if I packed the truck so if I packed the truck properly and I put all the boxes in my dream Oh, wow.

9:44If I packed the truck with all of the boxes, then I could sleep. But if I didn't do that, then I couldn't sleep. So I'd have a shocker of a sleep trying to do that, and then I'd wake up and go and pack a truck all day. Yeah, right, that rules. That was fucking mint.

9:57Keyzie:I've had, fellas, something quite amazing happen to me on the sleep front. Four nights in a row, just cracking sleeps. Oh, that's great, man. Cracking sleeps. That's great. Even when I was in the halfway house. Nobody wants to hear about that, man. In Melbourne.

10:12Mike Minogue:You had a good sleep there.

10:13Keyzie:Yeah, well, the bed was really firm. And my wife and I were both like, our backs were fine again. Oh, you got bad backs? Yeah. You need a firm bed, man. And when we went to Vietnam, it was the same thing. We were on firm beds all the time and we had no back issues. And we're like, we've got to change our fucking mattress. Whatever you do, though, don't. Keep talking about it. It's really comfortable, though, our mattress.
