In short
The hosts recap the “Radio Awards Special,” debating whether the Radio Awards are tedious or worthwhile, then celebrating their station’s wins and standout presenters.
Guests
No named guests appear; it’s a roundtable among the hosts (Jase, Keezy, and “G”/others referenced).
Key claims
Awards are boring and overly commercial, but this year was fast (about two hours) and fun because they were there making it “funny.” They won several awards, with “Best New Talent” as the highlight.
Notable examples
Bec Sandys winning “Best New Broadcaster” after changing the under-30 eligibility rule; praise for a slick Maori/Pacific political commentator-style presenter with an “otherworldly” voice; a Northland More FM dreadlocked presenter who cracked up the room.

0:15Keyzie:Oh, g'day, fellas! Man, bone. Hello. Do your normal hello.
0:21Mike Minogue:Hello. Good shit, man. How are you guys today? Your G?
0:25Keyzie:Yeah, I'm good, though. I've got a bit of a sore back, to be honest. It's really bugging me today It's going to be even more sore after the show today Carrying Kesey, who's hungover I actually am
0:36Mike Minogue:Real fucking hungover Yeah Like it's so great because I spent Four hours lying on the couch Today After you correctly pointed out that I woke up at 10am 100 % So I've got this eye mask that I put on And you keep the curtains closed And my wife got up and went to the gym and was working in the other room and I'd genuinely just gone to the world. Wake up 10am, holy shit, how good. Isn't it amazing how long a hangover can last? What do you mean? Just be in pieces. Well, you've had that, so you were eating Reburger at 3am. Yeah. In bed not long after that. So you got yourself seven hours sleep. Yeah.
1:17Not bad. Did you have a doze this afternoon? No. If I was going to. You'd still be absolutely cooked, eh?
1:24Keyzie:What you'll find And this is what I always found Was actually The first day's heinous And not great The second day is pretty shit And the third day you're really grumpy That's what I find
1:39Mike Minogue:See I don't ever get grumpy I'm just tired as I'm never puking I never feel sick I'm none of that I've been poisoned By excessive alcohol consumption and my body just needs some time to work it through. That's it. Like a few days. It's going offline for a few days and I can't do anything else. I'm the opposite.
2:04Keyzie:I'm the opposite of that. I don't get tired. I wish I was. I get anxious. I wish I could sleep, but I don't. If I'm hungover, I'll wake up at like 6.30. No, 100%. And then be awake till midnight. Yeah, absolutely.
2:19Mike Minogue:Same here.
2:19Keyzie:It's horrendous.
2:20Mike Minogue:I get really, my wife hates it. I get really clingy when I'm hungover. I think we've talked about this. We've talked about this. Yeah, because, you know, you need a bit of love. You're really vulnese. You just need someone to be like, there, there. You're walking around the house with your hoodie on, like your hood up. Yeah, 100%. Yeah. I've got, so this is my hangover outfit that I can work in, which is black track pants, black hoodie. But like, you know, at home, I've got an all green bum pants track suit. Bum pants. Like, you know, yeah, around the house tracking. Homeless pants. Yeah, like cotton pants.
2:50Keyzie:I mean, I can tell you, and deservedly so, I get fuck all sympathy from my wife if I'm hungover. My wife's actually quite good. She's like, fuck you, man, you're on your own. No, we're pretty good. We tend to go out and get hammered, and the next day, the other person will sort of carry the load of what needs to be done around the house. Yes, 100%. Because it's quite mean if someone's hungover. Unless they're always. To then make them go and do shit. Yeah, exactly. Unless you take the piss with it, yeah. But yeah, good night last night fellas That was our first Radio Awards Jase, how did you enjoy that man?
3:25I sat next to you Oh, that's right I did I can say I didn't enjoy it at all About 120 awards But Keezy, you're quite clear that it's shit And that the enjoyable part is afterwards It does raise the question of why you bother going
3:42Mike Minogue:It's shit if you're a little tiny disruptor station like Hauraki Right If you're fucking ZB or ZM or The Rock who are massive, it's great because you get to all celebrate together with your giant team, all the big awards, winning everything. Yeah, it's quite funny seeing all the people go up and you're just like, Jesus Christ, I think there's five of us. Yeah, 100%.
4:01Keyzie:Well, having said that, we actually did pretty well last night, I thought. Yeah, we won some great awards. We won three or four awards. But anyway, yeah, no, look, it's awards, isn't it? I mean, it's fucking tedious.
4:10Mike Minogue:It sucks too because there's no drinking. It's tedious, yes. Or like, not that you guys drink. That seems particularly cruel. Yeah, but at least last night was fast. Like it was like boom, boom, boom. That was a very fast Radio Awards. That was two hours. Yes. Two hours. So that's the first one I've been to, I'll Never Go Again. Unless you're up for a biggie. Yeah, I mean out of courtesy. I think you'd go out of courtesy to the people that you work with that do the work. Yeah, 100%. That's where you go. But fucking hell. Yeah. There's some things there that like, oh my God. What? I can't say it because it will make those people feel bad potentially.
4:47But in terms of some of the categories, oh, my God.
4:52Mike Minogue:Like a lot of recognising the community radio stuff. No, no, I like that stuff. That's good stuff. No, no, and I'll be honest with you. The thing, I like the radio stuff. I like that stuff. At the risk. You don't have to. I guess it's the commercial side of it where you're like, it feels like a separate thing.
5:14Keyzie:Yes, I know what you're saying. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Totally. It's kind of like how at the Academy Awards they want to separate out the tech awards from the creative awards, you know, which I think is wrong because then you're just separating people out. But it is...
5:30Mike Minogue:But I also think, yeah, because you're right, radio, like, it should be the on-air and the execution of campaigns, like, outward-facing stuff as opposed to... I don't know, yeah. I'm just in favour of chopping the whole thing right down, Just sending it out in one email even. That's right. And then straight to the after party. That's right. I want to be honest, it's the most fun I've had at a radio awards though. Yeah, that's because I was there making it funny, eh? No, because you'd gone home early doors. I was on the couch by 10 past nine. That's pretty good going. Yeah. That's really good going.
6:01Mike Minogue:What time were you on the couch, Jase?
6:04Keyzie:Well, I went to the gym on the way home, so I didn't get home. Fucking hell. I didn't get home until about 11. Probably eight minutes after it finished. It took me longer to get out of the convention centre than it did to get home.
6:17Mike Minogue:Yeah. And were you stoked? Were you a bit like, oh, I wish I was at the after party? Not at all. Yeah. Not at all, and especially today waking up. You know, yeah, absolutely. The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast.
6:36Keyzie:It's my fucking nightmare, that scenario. 100%. It's packed with loud people getting hammered. No thanks.
6:45Mike Minogue:Sounds great to me. Totally.
6:47Keyzie:I mean, each to their own.
6:47Mike Minogue:I made a point this year of there are certain people in radio or in any workplace where you just don't want to get pinned down by them having a yarn. I had a shocker last year, and then the next day I was covering in here, and I got pinned down by about three different people who are lovely, but it's just like, oh, my God.
7:05Keyzie:Yeah, I don't want to be having this chat.
7:07Mike Minogue:Why am I not having chats with my friends and everyone at Hauraki? And so this year it was far better. Yes, because you didn't have that. Yeah, I didn't have that. Actually, me and Males were chatting, and then one of those people came over. Really? And then just sort of took Males off to the side, and then I was just like, sweet. See you, Males.
7:24Keyzie:Good to see you, mate. See you later.
7:25Mike Minogue:And then afterwards, Males was like, oh, thanks for that. Yeah. I messaged the fellas at The Rock to congratulate them on their win. Yes. Big fans of the show. they said to say, fellas, they love what you do. They'd like to catch up with us. We can get fucked. And I said, look, I'll have a chat to Keezy about it, and Keezy will be keen, but I said, Jace would rather be dead than come out for a beer or a coffee with you. Don't take it personally. He feels that way about everyone. Yeah. I mean, it's not inaccurate. Well, I know for a long time, Matt and Jerry, they catch up with the Morning Rumble boys once a year for a bit of a blowout.
8:05And who doesn't turn up? Rog. That's right. He just won't do it. Jace is our Rog.
8:09Mike Minogue:He's our Rog. Yeah, totally, man. They would catch up for a Christmas one.
8:13Keyzie:Yeah. Which I think is great. I think it is great. Yeah, totally. I messaged Corby last night because I thought he did a good job. What did you say? Good work, mate. And he said, yeah, she's a fucking marathon. 100%. He was so slick, though. Yeah, it's just bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. because all of the presenters were actually very good. Very, very good. And I was like, how the fuck are they? Where's the? Auto-cune. Yeah, it was fucking way at the back of the theater. Big TV behind us, yeah.
8:44Mike Minogue:And I was like, Jesus, that's pretty bloody impressive. There was one fellow there that helped present the awards. I can't remember what station he was from. The Maori guy? Fuck, he was out the gate. Fuck, he was. How good was his voice? He was so slick, man. Absolutely amazing. Yeah, and I was even sitting to Pugs a few times. I was like, this dude fucking is so good. We should actually try and talk to that dude. I wonder which... It was otherworldly, his voice. Yeah, very, very good. It was fucking incredible.
9:07Keyzie:I don't think he worked... No, he was on Radio New Zealand, maybe? Yeah, it might be RNZ if it's anything. I think it's a Pacific. It was a Pacific station. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And political. Political, yeah. He's a political commentator. I don't know that he's a presenter. Oh, no, he absolutely is. Fucking if he's not. Oh, my God.
9:24Mike Minogue:Yeah, yeah, he was fucking... And the other guy that was awesome was the guy from Northland More FM with the dreadlocks. Oh, yeah, with the dreads who did a roly-poly last year. He did a roly-poly. But, like, in this room full of people in suits and, you know, big shot, famous so-called celebrities, this Maori fellow with dreads who's, like, 50 or something comes down and just cracks everyone up on stage. It's just like, I can't believe I was at the bus stop this morning and now I'm here in this room with all you famous people and shit. I was like, he was brilliant as well. Great talent. He was great talent.
9:54Mike Minogue:You're researching that guy. I am. I'm trying to find him here. All I want to know is who's presenting, but, of course. so it doesn't really tell you that. Good on you, you backbones. Yeah, good on you. Yeah, we'll see you next week. But yeah, I enjoyed that. Well, no, you hated it. No, I enjoyed talking about it. Oh, right. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And can I just say, Bec Sandys, best new talent. Oh, my God, yeah. How good is that? Bec on our day show, she won best new broadcaster, and she had to write into the radio awards and get them to change their policy because you had to be under the age of 30.
10:29Mike Minogue:and Bec is almost 50. That's right. And so she wrote, she got them to change the rules and then she won it. That fucking award. That's pretty good, eh? Yeah, that's really good. That's so good. That's the best award we won, I reckon.
