In short
The hosts riff on family American car tours, New York subway trains, and the appeal (and mockery) of model trains as a meditative hobby.
Guests
No specific guests appear; the episode is a banter segment featuring the hosts (Keyzie, Jase, Maggie/Mogi) and mentions “Mon and Don” (Keyzie’s parents) plus a “friend’s” small tour company operator.
Key claims
Mon and Don make 2–3 US trips yearly, mixing off-mainstream stops like hot rod shops (e.g., Bruce’s Rod Shop) and old tyre brands (Coca Tyres). New York subway is praised as fast and fun. Model trains are framed as harmless, potentially meditative, and a “lose yourself” hobby.
Notable examples
Bruce’s Rod Shop; Coca Tyres headquarters; New York subway; Manukau Heads fishing anecdote (kawai catches declining).

0:17Keyzie:Oh, you're good stuff. Can you explain your shirt to me, Keyzie? Bruce is 100%. Oh, Bruce. Bruce, what is it?
0:28Mike Minogue:Bruce's Rod Shop.
0:30Keyzie:Oh, okay.
0:31Mike Minogue:In the back there's a picture of a hot rod.
0:33Keyzie:Oh, okay, yeah, cool.
0:35Mike Minogue:It's from Texas.
0:36Keyzie:Yeah, yeah. My mom and dad went there.
0:38Mike Minogue:Texas, California. No, Texas, Texas. They went there and they brought it back for me. Who did? Mon and Don. From where? Right, okay. Went to Bruce's Rod Shop last year. Did they? Yeah. They do a bit of travelling, do they? Well, they do now that they've retired, Maggie. Well, to be honest, what happens is a friend of my dad's has started a real small tour company taking people in their 60s over to the States to see places like Tennessee. Well, not so much those mainstream ones. Right. Places that people don't really go. Oh, yeah, sure. Like hot rod shops. Mississippi. Yeah, Mississippi. I don't know, Louisiana and all those kind of places like Memphis and Nashville.
1:21Mike Minogue:Memphis, Tennessee. And places like that. And then my mum and dad, my dad used to run a similar company back in the 90s. He used to run an American tour company, a small company. And this guy was like, can you drive the other van full of oldies? Oh, right. And my dad was like, I don't want to be paid. I just want to pay for me and my wife every time, and I don't have any responsibilities. Yeah, cool. But he still looks after everyone. Yeah, he's a backbone.
1:47Keyzie:Yeah, he's a good guy.
1:49Mike Minogue:And so because of that, they do two to three trips to the States every year. How good. Yeah. That's a sweet deal. It's pretty good. That's a really good deal. And mum and dad are stoked because I'm like, that's great. You guys are travelling lots. And because the guy and my dad and my mum, obviously, they're all from a car background, so naturally every trip they sprinkle in a few little car stuff. Rod chops. Hot rod chops. Yeah, like really famous ones. Like Bruce's rod chops. Yeah, like Bruce's. Well, that one I've never heard of. Have you not? Have you ever heard of that? Never heard of it.
2:14Oh, it's one of the best.
2:15Keyzie:But like they go to the – I always pop in and see Bruce whenever I'm over there. Yeah.
2:20Mike Minogue:Just to say g'day. Do you know Coca Tyres? Have you heard of them? No. Really old tyre brand. and they went to the headquarters there, and there's all these old hot rods parked up. Did they have tyres there and there? A few tyres. How good. But they were a famous tyre that all the old hot rods used to have on them. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And just things like that. You can't miss shit like that. I couldn't think of anything more tedious. Yeah, Jase, I know, because you're not interested in that. Looking at cars. Yeah. No, no, no. Hot rods.
2:42Keyzie:Tyres. Tyres, yeah. I mean, I'd be into looking at tyres. Yeah.
2:47Mike Minogue:Can you not yuck my parents yum, please?
2:50Keyzie:No, I think it's bloody good, Kesey. I'm bloody stoked for Mon and Don. Yeah. that they get to sort of travel around. You know, on a personal level, the States would be the last place I'd go to.
3:00Mike Minogue:A hundred percent, and they are of a similar opinion. However, the places they're going is not...
3:04Keyzie:Off-grid, kind of. Not off-grid, no.
3:07Mike Minogue:Off-grid. Everywhere is so different in the States. It's like going to Europe. It's like all the States are so different. Yes. Depending on who's settled there and blah, blah, blah. So the places they're going, yeah, there's a bit of, you know, people are walking around with guns on their hip and all that sort of bullshit. But most of it is like it's not the stuff happening in Washington or in LA or, you know, it's very different. Yeah.
3:24Keyzie:I've got to say, when I went to New York, I fucking loved it.
3:28Mike Minogue:Yeah, totally. It was amazing. Yeah. And that's one place that I'm like, you guys have to do a New York trip because that's not a current package they offer.
3:36Keyzie:And you know what was really great about it? It was the old trains. The subway. Are you kidding me? The trains are the best. It's just like, it's fucking crazy, man. You just go down, you get on, you're there in four minutes. It's a piece of piss. You're a freak for the trains, man. I love a train, Moggy. You always have. Did you hear?
3:52Mike Minogue:But also, New York subway is famously good, but way shitter than all the ones in Europe and Japan and stuff.
3:59Keyzie:No, I'm sure.
4:00Mike Minogue:The Horaki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Horaki. The Horaki Big Show podcast.
4:09Keyzie:Did you hear Mogi's train story?
4:13Mike Minogue:Oh. Should I hear it called Train Story? I would really like that. I don't know if I told you this, Keeser. Nah. I might have just saved it for just me and Jase to share. Well, that's not cool, man. I want to hear about the trains. Well, you're busy sucking back piss. But there was a fellow that came up to me when we were at the OB on Friday night there at Bruko. I am. At the Mount. And he comes up to me there and he goes, Mogi, what kind of trains are you into, man? You mean? I said, what's that, sir? You said, what's that, sir? What's that, sir? He goes, because you love trains, but what models, man?
4:48What kind of models are you into? I was like, oh, nah. No, man, that's all bullshit. Remember from years ago? That I love model trains, you know. That was a storyline we ran for a couple of weeks ago. This guy's been holding on to that for four years.
5:00Mike Minogue:And he was like, oh. Because is he into them? He loves them. Yeah, he's massively into them. He loves them. And he was really excited to have a conversation with me about model trains and was shocked to find out that the whole thing was a lie. Yeah. But that's the only lie we're running, though. That's the only lie. And then later on, he came up to me. By now, he was pissed. A bit pissed off. He's like, can't believe he's ain't like a model train thing. And I felt really bad for him because those were the days when it probably seemed like we were telling the truth. But also, the thing with model trains is I could, like, if someone's like Keezy, I'd check out my fucking model train thing I've built.
5:40Mike Minogue:Yeah. Like, it's interesting as fuck because I've spent all this time and it looks cool and blah, blah, blah, blah. So it's one of those hobbies that I'm interested to have. I can weirdly see the appeal of it. It's a harmless thing. I can see it being meditative. You sit there, you're painting, you know, you're off your head. Yeah, yeah. You're pissed off your head. Yeah, probably. You know, you're stoned. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Painting little people. You're bumping the tunes and you're just fucking trying to keep your hands steady. And you're just noodling away. Just absolutely ruining it. Well, it's the same as like working on a car in the back shed or doing any of those things.
6:11Mike Minogue:Oh, I mean, it's a little bit. When have you done that? When have I done that? Yeah. What do you mean, when have I done that? Fuck you, Jase, man
6:23Mike Minogue:First of all, I didn't say that I had done it I said it's the same kind of Oh, that was still good I have done that a lot Yeah, it's lamer than that, Keezy, mate, no mistake No, but it's not like, I don't like the yucking people's yuck But if you, yeah There is a, for example There is a use Post-apocalyptically, if you can Put together a card, there's a use to that If you can put together a model train, you're going to get beaten to death. Yeah. For your trains.
6:51Keyzie:But, you know, because I think some people, and well, I know some people have massive setups. It would be very meditative. It would be. You know, watching your train going, you know, and you're stoned off your head. It's true. It's better than it. It's the same as any other thing that you get into. That's right.
7:07Mike Minogue:And so, like, Jase, you always say, and heaven forbid, your lovely partner was to perish tomorrow. You were like, that's me. I'm done with the dating pool. I'm not back. I'm an old ram cast, blah, blah, blah. In that situation, you would then throw yourself into something like model trains. Lose yourself in it, man. And so your house, you'd clear out all the rooms, they'd become model train rooms.
7:26Keyzie:Were that terrible thing ever to happen, Keezy, I wouldn't be throwing myself into model trains. Yeah.
7:31Mike Minogue:More into a raging river.
7:33Keyzie:No.
7:33Mike Minogue:What?
Read the full transcript
7:34Keyzie:No. On cabin traffic. It might be a raging river.
7:37Mike Minogue:A real train. What would you throw yourself into if you had to have a hobby like that?
7:42Keyzie:What would I be into? I don't know. Well, you know, my hobby is fishing. Is that a hobby? Your hobby is holding a fishing rod No, I don't even hold it, I put it in the stake
7:51Mike Minogue:You kind of do fuck all fishing to be honest though Yeah, no, I do quite a bit of fishing Well, you do a lot of fishing but you don't catch any fish That's the weird thing about you That's like playing with model trains and not actually having any trains
8:01Keyzie:The thing is with me not catching any The places I'm fishing are not really very good for fishing Oh, like a paddock Well, you know, it's like It's like the sea's very flat It's not like I'm casting into deep water Right. Do you drop a line into your toilet? Yeah, I could, I suppose. I'd probably have as much chance. At least every now and then you pull up a massive turn. But the thing is, the thing is, fellas, I've learnt that where I generally fish the manukau heads, because of all the trawlers just on the lip, you know, just beyond there, the mouth of the head, are just scooping up all the fish.
8:42Keyzie:and I was talking to some old fellow a little while back and he said, mate, I used to come down here and catch four or five kawai every time. What a greedy prick. And now he's like, I'll be lucky if I catch one kawai five times I come down here.
8:56Mike Minogue:Question, you've got heaps of dog squad money, right?
9:00Keyzie:Not anymore, Keasy. It's all gone.
9:02Mike Minogue:Why don't you get a boat? Well, yeah, because...
9:06Keyzie:What a way to go. Well, admin.
9:09Mike Minogue:Yeah, but you love admin.
9:10Keyzie:Who was talking to me recently about the admin? It was me. Oh, it was you, yeah.
9:14Mike Minogue:But it's a lot of admin. The admin of a boat. But my thing is I don't like fish. Whereas you like fishing, but you can't get to where the fish are.
9:21Keyzie:Well, I'd have to do – I wouldn't feel very confident going out in the boat in the water. I wouldn't feel confident in you going out in the boat in the water. Exactly. I wouldn't know what I was doing, Keezy.
9:31Mike Minogue:You could do, like, boat lessons. You could take a captain's show. You could take a seaman with you.
9:38Keyzie:Fuck's sake.
9:44Mike Minogue:just give it up fuck this man this is just stupid it's good stuff hey listen this is a good show what a great show listen to the big show four to seven weekdays on Radio Hodaki it's good listening
