In short

Weekend catch-up and “sink or swim” themes—getting back into routines (gym, steps), dealing with work fatigue, home/house-inspection updates, and frustrations/learning curves around swimming and cold/sauna recovery.

Guests

No guests appear; it’s a host-and-cohost-style chat (named only by nicknames: Kesey, Moggy, Keezy/Hoity J).

Key claims

They’re done with weekend work after a final week at Sky; their new home is improved by a father doing renovations; out west has few bars and limited supermarket alcohol, so they went to Northcote Tavern for cheap pints.

Notable examples

Ice bath/sauna session interrupted by loud IRD Zero chatter; swimming lessons trauma and school swimming sports where Hoyt/Jase came last and was told to get out; plan to film a deep-pool attempt.

0:15Keyzie:Oh, g'day fellas. Hello. Hey. Yeah. What a day, eh? Oh, God. What a day. Jeez, man. Bloody freezing but glorious at the same time. I was up nice and early there, fellas, 5.30. Yes. A little bit of work, Kesey. I was thinking about you. There I was. Thanks, man. And then I walked to the gym. Yes. Had a workout. Yes. Got a haircut. Walked to work. Walked home. Walked here. Didn't work here. Good stuff. But it's good getting my steps up like old hoity Jay. Yeah, man. You know, yesterday was the first day, and it's kind of bizarre since we've moved into our new joint that we've actually kind of spent a day in the apartment.

1:00Keyzie:She was a shitter of a week. Because it was a shitter of a, you know, weather-wise. And it's been so amazing that my wife and I are like, let's get out. Let's do it. And we went out a little bit, but most of the day was spent just in our nice warm apartment there watching old movies. Oh, yes, some old movies. It was very good. It was very good. I enjoyed it.

1:20Mike Minogue:I did something that I haven't done since earlier doors in media. Working all weekend. Working all weekend at Sky in my old office. I was working all weekends too, man, if that makes you feel better. Yeah, but you love it though. I do fucking love it. A little bit of work, Moggy, you know. I do love it. Honestly, like I was back at my old, pretty much my old desk in my old area and it was fine and I'm getting paid for it, if you know. But I'm just like. Listen to you dragging your nuts around about it. No, it's just like, you know, when you have that realisation of, hey, I did this for 10 years and I'm back.

1:48Mike Minogue:It's good to know that you don't want to do it anymore. And I don't want to do this anymore. Yeah. So I've got another week of it and it's great and it's cool to help out and be at Sky, blah, blah, but I'm done after that. On a kind of similar vein, Keezy,

1:59Keyzie:we did our first house inspection in terms of going back to the past.

2:04Mike Minogue:Ah, you saw your old house.

2:05Keyzie:Going back to our, fuck, that's weird.

2:07Mike Minogue:I bet you walked in there and you were like, look at this old shithole.

2:10Keyzie:Actually, well, I'll talk about it on the show. No, they've done a really good job of it. They fucking have. It looks really good. And they put up like invisible, what are they called? Floating shelves. And it's like, fucking hell, is this our house? Good shit.

2:22Mike Minogue:Wow, so you were impressed by what they'd done. Yeah. It looks really good. Oh, that's nice.

2:26Keyzie:And as I say, their father, who lives just down the road, he's retired and he's a real fixer-upperer. Right. And he's just coming around to our joint and doing shit. He's got his hands full. It's fucking great. Are you paying him? Talk about working all weekend. They're like, hey, is it okay if my dad comes and does this? And we're like, yep. Fixes up the deck there. Yep. Or he water-blasted it. Not the back deck because that's fucked.

2:51Mike Minogue:The deck that the builder fell through. Yeah. Yeah. Twice. Fucking hell. I really want to come to your old house. Yeah, man. Who are these people? Would I get on with them? Oh, they're very nice people. Maybe they'll invite me around.

3:02Keyzie:But I'm loathe to bring it up on the show because I know where it's going to go as soon as I mention it. And they listen to the show. What do you mean?

3:09Mike Minogue:Where do you think it's going to go?

3:10Keyzie:Well, do you recall our improv on me doing a house inspection? Yeah.

3:15Mike Minogue:Yeah, well, I recall who took it there. Yeah, Maggie. You filthy bastard. You guys are piloting the filter. Shocking bastards.

3:22Keyzie:Yeah, nice weekend. Nice weekend. Bloody great weekend. So good. One of the greats. One of the greats. It was fine. It was all right. You loved it, Kesey, working a little bit of work. What I did love - Not drinking any piss, which was fucking great.

3:34Mike Minogue:What I did love was, and I miss it, out west where we live, it fucking sucks. There's no bars. There's like a couple of bars. There really isn't, eh?

3:43Keyzie:There's not a lot of bars out, which is surprising.

3:46Mike Minogue:And like a nice pub. Yeah. You know, I'd love to live somewhere where you've got your pub, and it's like, oh, should we go to the pub for an hour or just have a pub? You know, we don't have that. And so we went over to Northcote, to the Northcote Tavern, which is really nice. Oh, is that where you went? Yeah. Yeah, it's good there. And it was packed out, and it was like good cheap pub food and pints. It's a good - Two pints of, I think it was like Spates Ultra. It was$19. Fucking less than$20 for two pints in Auckland. That's not bad.

4:10Keyzie:That still sounds fucking outrageous to me, but I'm way behind that. No, no, no, that is super cheap. I'm really good. Way behind the counter on that.

4:17Mike Minogue:$10 Guinness, and I was just like, there's a fucking TAB there, big TV, It's packed. Mania's in the pokies, putting his rent in. Yeah, how good. It was fucking awesome. And it was literally just drinking piss, chatting to the random old boys, and just watching the waas. And jacking it. And jacking it.

4:31Keyzie:I always found that peculiar about out west as well, that there were no fucking bars.

4:36Mike Minogue:The trust, eh?

4:37Keyzie:Yeah, it's just like there was this one, the K bar, which was in Kelsen, which was a heinous fucking shithole. Yeah. And that was about it. Well, we used to have one in Glen Eden, and then that shut down, which actually was kind of that vibe. Kind of old school dudes.

4:54Mike Minogue:Yeah, right.

4:55Keyzie:You know, just drinking their beersies.

4:57Mike Minogue:Yeah, it does suck out there. And you can't buy piss from the supermarket. Yes. Fuck, it's a pain in the ass. Yeah. I have to go to the bottle store. Oh, mate. It's just exhausting. Oh, mate. Fuck this, man.

5:12Thanks, Moogie. That made me feel better. What other exciting things happened on the weekend, fellas?

5:21Nothing. No, but that's kind of nice. It is. Well, I didn't drink. Sorry to go back to it, but it gives us something to talk about. Went to the gym, Keezy. Oh, yeah. Oh, man, loved it. Gym who? Gym Hickey. Oh, wow. Yeah, he's a sicko. Ice baths. What's the other thing?

5:37Keyzie:Are you doing the classic extreme non-drinking full-on exercise? Well, not full-on, but certainly exercising as opposed to none. Yes. Yeah, so I've got to replace it with something. And when you feel good, you want to go and exercise. I haven't exercised pretty much all year. Yeah. It's not good. It's not good. But what was really great is I went down to the ice bath joint, and they've got the sauna there as well. So you're in the sauna, and in the sauna there, and I like it to be a bit quiet in there, Keezy. You know? Just sweating quietly amongst yourselves. People are chilling out. If you're going to have a little bit of a chat, you'll like this.

6:10Hey, man, how you going? Yeah. Hey, what's that you got down there? That's looking pretty tasty. Bro, is that a banana in your pocket? Are you just desperate to burn me? The Hodaki Big Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hodaki. You know how good the Hodaki Big Show podcast is? Yeah, I love those fellas. Backbone. Yeah, backbone. You get it. You've got to get around the live radio show. Oh, you? When's that? Four to seven weekdays on Radio Hodaki and iHeartRadio. Backbone. Nice. The Hauraki Big Show Podcast. Anyway, a couple of broads walk in there, running their goddamn yaps. Oh, wow. And what are they talking about, Hoidi J?

6:56Hoidi J. Exactly what I'm trying to get away from, fucking, which I was working at home, then I go down there for a bit of a break, they come in talking about the IRD Zero shareholder, but at the top of their voices. It's fucking annoying when people do that. Oh, but they're being rude, but I'd feel too rude saying, And, hey, can you guys just fuck off? I mean, just whisper, I mean. But, yeah, just like – so that absolutely killed my buzz. I got an immediate soft on.

7:25Keyzie:Yeah. It's so weird because we've got a sauna at our joint and a pool. No. And it's fucking great. My wife and I have done it – my wife has done it way more times than me, can I add. We've done it like three or four times, have a swim, go to the sauna. Yeah. it's kind of sexy. But you can't swim, can you? Yeah, I can swim, but really badly. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm not a good, like if you chuck me in the middle of the ocean, I drown pretty quickly. Yeah. Like I dog paddle. Yeah, that's not swimming. I breaststroke. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I can swim. I'm just not good at doing the breathing on the side thing.

8:07Keyzie:I've never nailed that. Right. I've never been able to do it. I always just suck in fucking gallons of water. Did they teach water? They teach water. Have you ever been taught water? Swimming when you were at school? Yes. Same. Yeah. And actually, I remember my mum taking me to swimming lessons when I was a real young fella, and I fucking hated it. I remember just screaming on the side of the pool going, No! No! And you're a vicious little bastard as well. Yeah. But I've never been a good swimmer, ever. And it bums me out because it would be great to be a good swimmer. Well, you know you can learn.

8:43Yeah, I suppose so. I had a mate who got to 35, couldn't swim at all. Yes. Sort of like you, but not as bad. Yeah. And then he went and got lessons, and now he does Ironmans. Oh, yeah. I've always been massively impressed by that, because people are normally like that. They're like, oh, no, I can't swim. Wish I could. Yeah. And he was like, well, fuck that. I'm going to go and get lessons.

9:05Keyzie:But I like going in the ocean, but I'm not going for a big de-de-shouting to the boy. A little dip. I go for a dip and a dive and a bit of a float. It's nice, Keezy. Totally, man. Are you a good swimmer? Apart from your swimmer's ear?

9:19Mike Minogue:I'm a decent swimmer, yeah. Yeah. I would never have raced, never swum race, you know, race well. Have you raced against like Daniel Loder or anything like that? No, Moss Bermister. Oh, wow, Moss. Yeah, man, old Moss. I forgot about Moss. Yeah, he wins my school. What about Anthony Moss? Don't know. Anthony Moss is very good. You've actually got a good physique for a swimmer. That's a very nice thing to say

9:42Keyzie:Well no you know what I mean You're very tall and sort of I've got webbed toes And you've got those webbed toes Keezy Why would I say something like that Keezy

9:52Mike Minogue:Because then your honker will cut through the water

9:55Keyzie:That's only on the back side There's a shark

9:59Mike Minogue:No I'm a decent swimmer Yes But the hardest part is the timing your strokes With your breathing Well I get quite panicked

10:07Keyzie:That's the problem And so when I can't get breath in, I start sucking in the water. We've got to get you in a pool, man. No, you don't. We've got to get you on the socials.

10:18Mike Minogue:We've got to get Pugs and Dilly with their phones out and Hoity J in a deep pool. And absolutely freaking out.

10:24Keyzie:Well, I've told you at our school swimming sports, I was the resident comedian. I would enter every event and come last in every event. Right. Because I was so bad. Yeah. To the point where on one occasion, and I think I told you, my deputy headmaster, I got to the end of the pool and I hadn't even finished and he said, Hoyt, get out of the pool, you're humiliating yourself.

10:50Mike Minogue:But you would have been taking the piss though. So Mogi, when you asked me if I can swim, the answer is, yeah, yeah, no, not bad. You would have been taking the piss. There's no way you were trying. I wasn't, I was going like the clappers. Well, because you're winning points for your house, aren't you?

11:04Keyzie:Yeah, well, for my sports house. But the problem was everyone else was already finished like 10 minutes ago. But you were going like the clappers. Well, you know, when you're going like the clappers were going nowhere. And when you have the lanes. You know when Hoytie J is on the ground and he tries to get up? Yeah, it's like that. Sort of like a turn on his back. But I remember, you know, because you have the lanes with the ropes on them, always getting tangled in the ropes because I couldn't swim in a straight line. I'd go like that. I'd curve. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And just get tangled up and go, oh, and have to start again.

11:39I remember those people at swimming sports. Well, good on you for trying, Jase. Yeah, thanks. I can't wait for this video. That'll be good. So we'll shoot that tomorrow.

11:47Mike Minogue:I reckon tomorrow. We'll go down to Dive HQ or something. They'll go to the real deep pool. Or you could just chuck you off the wall. You can come to my joint. That's a good answer. Oh, there we go. You'll feel safe there. Can we actually come and film you swimming? No.

12:00Mike Minogue:What if we do a poll? No. Hey, listen to The Big Show, four to seven weekdays, Radio Hauraki. Good listening.
