In short
Post–long-weekend banter on The Hauraki Big Show, shifting into fishing talk (Greymouth/Hokitika, Auckland fish scarcity), then a discussion of eating animals/chicken via YouTube “Uncle Rural Gourmet,” plus travel food jokes (Cambodia, Japan).
Guest backgrounds
Three regular hosts—Jase, Kezy, and Mogey—no external guests; they trade stories about work, travel, and hobbies like fishing.
Key claims
Auckland fishing success has dropped because boats outside Manukau Heads “scoop up” fish; Hokitika’s ocean is too rough to swim but great for surfcasting; “Uncle Rural Gourmet” kills and uses all animals matter-of-factly, influenced by famine history.
Notable examples
Greymouth train trip; Hokitika ocean; Russell holiday where one host caught four fish in two days; Cambodia guide explaining small stature from malnutrition; “locust” disappointment; split/butterfly chicken vs smashed avocado.

Oh g'day fellas. G'day fellas man. G'day Jase. How's everyone going eh? Everyone fizzing to be back on the Monday? I'm good. For often. Yes.
0:24Mike Minogue:Are you? I am. I'm fucking fizzed up man.
0:28Keyzie:That's not what you said before the show. You said you were really tired.
0:31Mike Minogue:Just gassed, but nothing energises me like coming here with you guys. It was a long weekend, man. But I'm not going to let that affect me.
0:37Keyzie:That was a big one, man. Holy. It was a big weekend, actually, especially when you're sort of getting back at 10 and 11 at night. That's when it gets difficult. Yeah. Wake up with a kid on the Sunday morning. Jesus Christ. Had a nap today, though. Got a couple of hour napping. Oh, yeah, nice. Yeah, yeah, yeah. God, I wish I could do that. I wish I could do the nana nap.
0:58Mike Minogue:Fuck it was funny, yesterday Builder came round, your mate Yes, nice fella And he's just like, oh, you guys were away on holiday I saw, man, I was like, oh yeah, working, blah blah blah And he's like, oh, how was it? I was like, yeah, it's good, I was like, oh, I was pretty tired now And he's like, oh really, why, what were you doing? And I was like, literally just Drinking alcohol and chatting And as I was saying it out loud, I was like Yeah, actually, I don't have any right to be tired Well, the funny thing about this But that's not how it works though, is it? Because you're mentally on And it is all day and then you've got to fly.
1:29Mike Minogue:But when you're trying to describe it to a guy. And then delay it an hour. Oh, absolutely. Who's about to do physical labour. Totally. But that guy works from seven till three. Two.
1:37Keyzie:No, I'll tell you about that guy because he's the guy that did work around my house. He works fucking long hours. He works all day and then he goes out and does other work on top of what he's doing during the day. He's a backbone.
1:52Mike Minogue:And so when I was saying to him that, yeah, I was pretty tired from drinking beers and talking. Yes. He was like, oh, man, R.I.P. Yeah, true. Yeah. Fucking good weekend, though. Really good weekend. Loved it. Especially the train. Loved the train. The train was great. Train show. I just love being in Greymouth just for a little bit.
2:09Keyzie:For a little bit, yeah.
2:10Mike Minogue:Not for ages.
2:11Keyzie:And I've got to be honest with you, fellas. I liked Hokitika. It's a nice little place.
2:15Mike Minogue:Yeah, well, because Mogi and I was our second time going. Yes. You enjoyed it?
2:18Keyzie:Yeah, I did. I can see you down there. I liked the fact that it was right next to the ocean. If it was just like a town like that with no ocean around it, it'd be shithouse. It'd be a struggle. But the fact that there's this big, long ocean, I found it very appealing. Yeah, it's a big exposed bastard, isn't it? Yes.
2:39Mike Minogue:It's the kind of ocean that would fuck your shit up.
2:41Keyzie:Well, I wouldn't swim in it. No, it was terrifying. I'd fish it, though. I'd get the surfcaster out and biff it out there. In those waves? Yeah, totally. It'd be perfect for surfcasting. Right. Perfect for catching nothing. Yeah, I mean, I can't help it. But that's because of a jake, it's not because of the sand. Yeah, it's not. Yeah, yeah. I think it's because in Auckland all the fish have been scooped up. Is that what it is? And in the manukau heads, you know, all the fish. I think I told you this. I was talking to a fella when I was fishing not long ago, and he was an old fella, and he said, you know, I used to come here all the time, and I'd get four or five kahawai every time.
3:17Keyzie:Oh, you told us, yeah. And he said, now I'm lucky if I get one every five times. and he said it's because all the boats are just outside the Manukau heads just scooping up all the fish. Yeah, they love it, man. Scooping them up. I see people down there, because I ride to work now, underneath the bridge. Yes. People are catching fish left, right and centre. Well, yes. Oh, just one after the other. Are they scooping them up? They're just scooping them up. Well, they're using a hook, man. But they're just, they're absolutely, they seem they're getting sick of fish. That's how many fish, because I stop and have a yarn to them, you know, because I'm a part of my community.
3:49And they are, there's too many fish. That's bullshit.
3:52Keyzie:Because I've fished there many times. Oh, I know. They said. You should see Jase down here. And I've watched. He keeps on putting his hook into the rubbish bin. And I've watched no one catch a fish down there. No, that's not true. I saw one guy catch a kawaii once, and that's it. But. So Mogi's lying.
4:09Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show. Weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. The Hauraki Big Show podcast. So you think the reason you don't catch fish is because boats catch all the fish?
4:21Keyzie:Well, this old fellow who I was talking to, he was a good fisherman. Was he catching heaps of fish? No, well, that was the point. He sounds like a shit fisherman. And he was saying back in the day he used to always catch fish, but now there's fuck all fish around. I don't think he suddenly became useless. Well, he's the one telling the story. So he's telling you that he's Hoity J A number one, but he's telling the guy that is A number one. So who does he think he is? I hope you handle that with him, man. That guy sounds like a piece of shit. That could be true. He could be bullshitting me and that's just all a lie.
4:52Maybe. Well, it's good to have a chat.
4:55Keyzie:But if you go outside of Auckland. Oh, fish to burn. Fish to burn. Like chuck the surfcaster out and hook a ticker. Bloody, I'd be real in the bar. You know what I'd like to see you with, JizzBot, is a drone that takes the hook all the way out. You know, about a K out at sea there. Drops it out and see what you catch. And it's like a long line. That's right. Yeah, I've been interested in doing that too. And just to prove my point, when we went up to Russell, right, just for a little holiday, and we were right next to the ocean there, I caught four fish in two days.
5:28Mike Minogue:I haven't seen any photos of this. Wasn't that at the AP &I show where they had the little hooks on them and underneath there's a number and it relates to a toy up on the wall? Oh, was that in a carnival?
5:39Keyzie:Yeah, yes. And it was so exciting throwing my line out and actually watching it get bites. Yeah. It had been so long. Yeah. You know, and fishing's great, but when you get in nothing, you just sort of sit by the redale. Well, you're not fishing. Yeah.
5:55Mike Minogue:You're not even fishing. No. You're a guy holding a stick.
5:58Keyzie:Yeah, well, I put it in a holder. Right, so you're just a guy going fuck off. You're a guy standing next to a stick. I'm a guy appreciating the ocean and just chilling out.
6:09Mike Minogue:Isn't it like, that's what's great about chicken, is that there's always going to be more chickens. Oh, you don't have to fish for them either. Nah, you don't have to fish for chickens. Imagine if you did. Why don't you fish for chickens? You'd catch just as many chickens as you would fish.
6:22Keyzie:I watch this thing on YouTube called Uncle Rural Gourmet, and he's a Chinese fella.
6:32Mike Minogue:I don't think that matters.
6:33Keyzie:Well, it does because it's relevant. He's got this huge farm, and he goes around, and he kills everything before he eats it and cooks it. It's quite fascinating. And he's quite brutal with the old chickens. He grabs it by the neck. You know, he kills his own goats, his pigs. He kills them all. Right. And it's just the way he does that is.
6:51Mike Minogue:It still hasn't been relevant that he was Chinese. But the thing is, there's no emotion behind it.
7:00Keyzie:He just kills them.
7:01Mike Minogue:It's very matter of fact.
7:01Keyzie:Yes, it's just hunk.
7:03Mike Minogue:Yeah.
7:03Keyzie:And then he, you know. Where does the Asian thing come in? Where does the Chinese part come in? Does he make like. Uncle Rural Gourmet is a Chinese chef and he does Chinese specialty food.
7:14Mike Minogue:You're right.
7:14Keyzie:Yes. I just, what does he make with it?
7:18Mike Minogue:Like a Peking chicken or something? Like chicken and rice. Chicken and rice.

7:22Keyzie:Just, just. Is that why it was important? Desiccated chicken and rice. He very rarely eats rice. Really? Yeah. Is he racist? That must have shocked you. He eats a lot of heads of animals, like ox head and stuff. I don't get that, eh? You saw that coming, right? Oh, mate, there's so much meat in a head, like a bull's head. Like a bull's balls.
7:42Mike Minogue:But there's also so much meat on the rest of the bull. Yes. Yeah, but when you come from a tradition of starving to death. Exactly. And famine. And then your parents raise you and they're teaching you to eat that shit, then you eat that shit. Totally. But his kids won't be eating that shit. Nah.
7:57Keyzie:And they use all of the animal kesey. You know what I mean? That's a big thing in their culture is to use all of the animals Chinese. Yeah, well, it lives in China.
8:08Mike Minogue:I told you about how when I was in Cambodia, just on famine and that. When I asked my tour guide, there's a little fella. It's probably like Horty J's build. Just a little tiny fella. Yeah, barely there. There's barely there. And he was like, and he was driving us around this tuk-tuk, you know, and he was sort of in a booster seat. And he was wearing a Reburger hat. He had a Reburger hat. I'm taking off my Reburger hat, you see. I've got too much jeb. But I was like, oh, everyone's quite short. And he's like, yeah, because everyone grew up malnourished. Yes. He literally was just like, because I was like, you know, in New Zealand, everyone, there's a lot of big people.
8:50Mike Minogue:And like, yeah, it's because they eat a shit ton. Yeah. When you're living on bugs and shit because you can't afford to buy food, he didn't say it like this. That's the name of their biggest takeaway restaurant, eh? Their chain restaurant. Bugs and shit. Bugs and shit.
9:01Keyzie:It's like their Starbucks.
9:02Mike Minogue:Actually, I've heard that they could be interested in coming on board as a sponsor. Bugs and shit. Yeah. $50 bugs and shit.
9:08Keyzie:I never got to eat a locust. I was disappointed about that. Yeah, you were let down there, weren't you?
9:15Mike Minogue:Oh, no, you're not. Where are you going on holiday next? Japan. Japan? Yeah, okay, because there's lots of bugs and stuff. Bugs and shit. Bugs and shit in Japan. Okay. You can eat a locust over there, man. Yeah, cool. And you can eat some fish, Keezy. As long as you're not the one catching it. Nah. I love chicken, eh? Chicken fucking rules, man. It's good eating. Fuck, it's good. Apart from the drumstick. Oh, yeah. Ooh, disgusting. And the thighs shit. No, thighs are amazing. And the wings shit. Thigh, boneless thigh. That means. Boneless.
9:49Keyzie:I'm having a split chicken tonight. It's split. Is it smashed? No, it's not smashed, Mogey. It's a split chicken. Ooh, butterfly. That's a weird name. That's weird too, though, isn't it? Yes, it is. Like the smashed avocado. What's the fucking difference?
10:03Mike Minogue:Butterfly chicken. It's just flayed out. Yeah. So what? In a chili sauce. I'm just describing it. No, I know. Like smashed avocado. But to Jace's point always, he hates smashed avocados. But he likes split chickens. Totally. Isn't it just chicken? I love a split chicken. And vaping. Good yarn, fellas. Hey, this is the big show. Four to seven weekdays. Radio Horaki. Good eating.
