In short

The hosts recap their Hauraki Big Show weekend away in New Zealand—especially the live show logistics, crowd moments, and post-show partying—then close the episode.

Guests

No guest interviewees are featured; it’s a roundtable among the regular hosts (Pugs, Keezy, Jace, and Haughty J, who is filming and returns tomorrow). They mention their boss Toddy and the Emerson’s brewery team.

Key claims

The weekend was the “funnest” Hauraki weekend away (better after the show), the live set ran smoothly despite playlist changes, and they’ll be back next year.

Notable examples

songs/playlist “Bliss” vs “Beers” vs “Blind” confusion; someone threw something during a joke (a lemon) derailing the break; a man flicked hands under someone’s “buzies”; another showed a penis; an awkward question about whether someone is Māori and their whakapapa.

0:15Mike Minogue:Backbones. Hello everyone. Hi. Hey guys. Hello. Just said boy hi. How you feeling fellas? You had a big weekend on it guys. Come on. Pugs is shockingly hungover. I'm not shockingly hungover. I feel magnificent today. Neither of you are 100. To be fair, I'm probably about 90. Are you? Nah, it's a 40. I'm like 16. Nah, you're low. But I'll switch it up until 7. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then I'll be an arsehole when I get home. Yeah, early night. No Haughty J, by the way. He's filming today. He'll be back tomorrow. He is. Yay. How many more days off has he got? One more. All right. In a couple of weeks on a Friday.

0:53Mike Minogue:I think it's the same day you guys have off. Oh, it is? Yeah, it is. Next week. Friday week. Which is great, by the way. If you guys could always have a day off all together so that I can just. I don't think Toddy likes that, our boss. I think he prefers us to all have different days off, so he has to monitor it with great skill. How was. What? We're going to talk about this on the show, but Pugs, I would say that I'd go on record as saying that was the funnest hauraki weekend away. Wow. Within New Zealand. Wow.

1:23Jason Hoyte:100 % agree. That's pretty good.

1:25Mike Minogue:Fiji and Magic Round obviously are unbeatable Yeah But fuck that was mean Right awesome Really good And the second day too I was really worried that I was going to be absolutely buggered And a full day of chatting to like Did it get good after we left? Because I hated it It got way better after we left Yeah good Once the show was done Yeah yeah And we were having a few beers and stuff And it fucking ruled

1:44Jason Hoyte:It took you a little while to start up again I think you were a little bit worried about how you're going to feel But then just more and more over the day You complained less and less about how tired you were Hey fuck you man

1:53Mike Minogue:No no no no

1:53Jason Hoyte:It wasn't like a bad thing.

1:55Mike Minogue:It was something you noticed. Here he is. Well, because I was feeling like shit on the Saturday, which is when you guys woke up and left. Yes. I was feeling like shit on the Saturday. I was like, I can't believe I have to go there and do another whole day. And this sounds stupid of just chatting. But we didn't have to do a whole day. No, we didn't. And we didn't. But the gig, I believe, started at lunchtime. Yeah, roundabout. And we got there at maybe 1. Yes. Oh, wow. That was earlier than you thought. And literally in my head I was like, we'll go there for a few hours, have a few beers. And it just got so good.

2:26Mike Minogue:But it was just fucking awesome. Everyone I met was awesome and the bands were awesome and the beers were awesome. Who played on the set? Gin, Tiki and that band Ivy.

2:35Jason Hoyte:Yeah. Bootleg Rascal was the first day.

2:40Mike Minogue:It was awesome. It was fucking awesome. And I didn't realise how often those punishing videos of me and Jase were playing on the TV. Right. Fuck, they were humiliating. They were so humiliating. were they bad or were they actually good they looked great

2:53Jason Hoyte:they looked really good but yeah it is a lot

2:55Mike Minogue:but it was cheesy it was us in a studio having filmed a million things just starting to get really stupid with it in a way we thought at the time was funny and now it's broadcast out on a big screen and people are just like waiting for the tunes to start up again and it's me and old Horty Joe who's standing on a box to look really tall just holding a banana and doing the lamest shit and it's just like and I'm hung over and I'm just like already hating myself and I'm like, oh, cool, there he is. This fucking wanker. Up on the big screen. God. Oh, that's good. And what time does it wrap up? It finished at 7.30.

3:28Mike Minogue:Oh, shit. Yeah, way earlier than I thought, to be honest. But the great thing was, because we were working with Emerson's. But late on the first night. Yeah, yeah, yeah. 10 on the first night. 10, yeah. So we got ushered out at 10.30. But because it was right next to the Emerson's brewery and they were hosting us, they were all just like, let's go back to Emerson's. Yeah. So good. And then just got on the piss there. Sauce there. Fucking ruled, man. What time did you go to bed? I was eating a pizza in bed at 11.30. It was pretty good. And I was loving it. I was loving it. Rooms are pretty good, eh?

3:55It was a nice hotel.

3:56Mike Minogue:Amazing hotel. I think, again, I'd say, if we were going again, I'd say at the last place we stayed at because that place was noisy. It was fucking noisy. Yeah. How did you sleep on a Friday night? Noisy bastard. Good. Yeah, cool. I was out. Yeah, good. Yeah, it felt like I heard you guys in the room next door, possibly. Potentially. No, no, I was, no, it wouldn't have been. Yeah, it seemed like I was like, is that them? But yeah, I was out by probably 10 or 11 or something. Yeah, so we got home. I got home at about 12. Well, what time did we get back that night? Did we get home together? I can't even fucking remember.

4:30Mike Minogue:Oh, dear. I don't remember. Nah, nah. You don't remember if you got back together? Nah. No. Fucking hell, fellas. What are we doing here?

4:37Jason Hoyte:No, no, no, no. It's more just like remembering. That's shocking. You got some shocking bastards.

4:42Mike Minogue:It's more just remembering the timeline of events. Just blacking out. The timeline of events. No, it wasn't a blackout. But it was a hazy stumble home sort of situation. With our Turkish. Oh, we got kebabs. With our Turkish. We got kebabs. And it was so good. I ate a fucking kebab. So good you couldn't remember it at all. Now I distinctly remember how delicious it was. It's because of the second night out ruining the memories of the first night out. Yeah, it all becomes one night out. The Hauraki Big Show. Weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki.

5:09Jason Hoyte:The Hauraki Big Show podcast.

5:12Mike Minogue:Really interesting though. So I had a couple of interesting run-ins with people. The first one we'll all vividly remember, which is the guy throwing something during the show, which completely fucked the joke I was trying to do, and then put me in an instant whir of a mood for the rest of the show. No, no, it lightened up. It took me half an hour. Lightened up. The thing that helped us was the throbber. Yes. And then it went back into dark clouds. Just don't talk to me while I'm sorting out the songs. Oh, bro. Do you know what the other issue was? the most intense photos request but it was also the most intense me having to change shit during a live show I've ever had yeah yeah yeah and I was already good lessons in there we definitely need a bit of music when you've got women there let's try and get them dancing yeah yeah yeah so for those that were there that's the first time I was fucking with the playlist a wee bit you were doing great within the bounds of not getting in trouble with the bosses by playing good stuff that is a party you know so there's a lot of that going on but there was also just all the like when a bliss played and it was a bit of a fuck up Oh, yeah.

6:13Mike Minogue:No, there were two different versions before we got to the actual versions. So that was – People found that. He played it at the start. So that was for the Throbber. So I chose Bliss, but it was a late change because I'd already chosen Beers. By Deja Voodoo. And I told Pugs that when we were – Doing the show. The night before we left. And I said, I'll do Beers by Deja Voodoo. And he looked at me and I was like, Keezy's chosen that one, eh? He's like, yeah. I was like, oh, that'll be funny. That is funny, yeah. Yeah, and then when you changed the rules and it was going to be Blind, it's like, oh, then it's going to be a shamble.

6:42So it was a late change. Because you said, I want to talk about something. And I was like, oh, he's going to try and do that.

6:48Mike Minogue:Yeah, because every time everyone intentionally, to be fair, Bliss was easily the winner. Yeah. Because just the way it starts, right? Yeah, exactly. Everyone fucking loves it. Yeah, it's a great start. But yeah, it was a bit of a schmozzle. And then went over and fucking put the orange in that dude's glass and told him to fuck off. He showed up the next day. And to be fair, I don't know if he was a listener or whatever. Yeah, but he had sunglasses and a hat on. Yeah, because he was embarrassed. who was incognito mode, yeah. But at the same time, maybe I overreacted, I don't know. Yeah, you did.

7:14Mike Minogue:Wow, yeah. No, you did. And that was my thing, what I said. No, well, you don't overreact. I think you can react any way you want, but then it's like, and I spoke to you about it on the day. It's like, can you go and get that guy a beer and just say, look, sorry, man, it was just like that interrupted the show and blah, blah, blah, and just sort it out. Because in the whole show, I'm looking that way and that guy's just staring at us the whole show. And so now I am dealing with that and I'm not thinking about the show at all. so I said to you can you go and sort of let it and you went nah fuck him I was like okay cool

7:40Jason Hoyte:do you know what happened after that were you doing it to me when you said to get a movie or him oh okay I was going to say did I miss that no no no what happened it pissed me off too to be fair I got the contagious mood but to be fair

7:51Mike Minogue:it was fucking annoying yeah it was the first time someone thrown something right in the

7:55Jason Hoyte:middle of a joke oh yeah

7:56Mike Minogue:and like people

7:58Jason Hoyte:are stupid sometimes but it pissed me off because he was a grown ass man who couldn't hack that joke

8:02Mike Minogue:but also it was only the first half of the joke I was to like apologize and do the classic fucking anyway um but then i was like to pugs i was like to pugs do you reckon you could find me uh an empty one of those glasses yeah and i'll grab him a drink yeah and pugs fucking you refused to did i yes you were like no he fucking deserves to be happy

8:20Jason Hoyte:sorry i was like fair enough yeah i mean in hindsight you're right i should have done what you were saying but i was like yeah well he was wrong he didn't need anyone buying him a beer He didn't need it. He was there buying piss already. It would have been a lovely gesture, but I was like, oh. Well, he did, because we can't be out there talking the kind of shit that we do, and then something like that happens, and then we go, oh, fucking hell, you can't do that. You know what I mean? It's like we've got to be able to take the good with the bad as well. It's a lemon. It went off Jace's head. It was like the Kennedy assassination bullet.

8:53It went off Jace's head onto Keezy's chest, and then it hit me. So it hit all three of us. It was just unfortunate you were talking at the time And it did completely derail the break

9:04Mike Minogue:Also that's what fucked me off too Is like Jase already hates being in a crowd of wasted dudes A third of his age And then he gets hit in the face with a fucking lemon Yeah yeah yeah From a guy who's his age But to be fair he didn't give a shit No I know To his credit I know He doesn't give a fuck That was the best thing that happened to him all day But it's the first time And I have like And there's certain things in my life Where I've flicked a switch and just fucking No absolutely It was good to see that you had that in you. I liked it. I liked that part of it. I think that's why I backed you so hard.

9:33Mike Minogue:I was like, Harriet, yeah, let's go, man. When you were like, he doesn't deserve a fucking free drink. I was like, well, if the angel on my shoulder, Pug-san, has said that it's all G. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That it's all G. Yeah, he was wrong. This isn't blame shifting, by the way. No, it's way too late for that. Yeah, yeah, so good. But holy fuck, excellent weekend. Oh, I loved it. Yeah, it was, it was. And then what happened? You had a second run-in. Second run-in. But, oh, no, there's just a few weird moments. I had a weird one. I had a weird one. I was walking around and people were saying hi and stuff.

10:02And this guy came up and he sort of got quite close to me. Yeah. And so it's sort of in your space sort of thing. So I went to shake his hand. And he got each of his hands and put them under my buzies and flicked them up. And then was laughing like a hyena to his mate. And just seemed like the biggest fucking loser on the face of the earth. So I just looked at him and was just like, yeah, good one. And just kept it. But he was so stoked with himself. And he went back to his neck. You see that? I was just like, oh, bro. Yeah, that's tough.

10:34Mike Minogue:Should have put an orange in his glasses and told him to fuck off. I should have. An orange up his ass. But yeah, there was a couple of weird things like that. But by and large, as always, because that's probably the second weird experience I've ever had. Like the second fuckwit experience I've ever had. Like don't put your fucking hands on me, man. There's been a couple It's a weird thing The other whakwood experience we had was just It was in Dunedin as well But it was a guy really wasted Who was just so annoying And then started showing his dick to us That's right That guy's a fuckhead Did that happen there?

11:03Mike Minogue:No that was That happened in Tauranga That was in Tauranga yeah No no no The guy that was in Emerson's in Dunedin A guy that started off all good Yeah There was a Maori guy at the one in Tauranga At the Mount Yeah As well But this guy was a dick At the end and started being a dick And saying that I was too cool to talk to him and shit And then just showed me his cock

11:21Jason Hoyte:Well, that's what you do, man.

11:22Mike Minogue:And then got to score it out. And I'm just like, why are the people so fucking weird? Yeah. And then another guy, which was quite interesting, I told you about. I love seeing people's cocks, eh? Oh, yeah, totally. But when it's when I'm Googling them or whatever. Yeah, at the end of the night. Not at Emerson's, you know? Yeah. And then another dude I was telling Pugs about, he comes up and he just looks at my phone number. He's like, are you Māori? And I was like, oh, why is that? I just want to know whether you're Māori or not. Just going to put you in a box. Insane thing to ask someone. And I was like, I really want to say no.

11:51Mike Minogue:I was like, yeah, I'm part Māori. He's like, where's your whakapapa? And I really just wanted to say, oh, have you heard of whakapapa? That's where I'm from. Which is a classic Billy T. James joke. Yeah. But I told him my whakapapa and then said if he doesn't believe me, go check to my nan in the family Urupa, which is a cemetery. And then he's like, oh, cool, bro, all good. And then walked off. Yeah, right.

12:09Jason Hoyte:And I was like, what the fuck is that?

12:11Mike Minogue:Just kidding. But it's good. No, hey, how are you? He's good. He's got another Māori in the people that he follows, so he feels good. He's like, oh, man, I didn't know Keithie was Māori. how good's that but he was coming at it as an intimidating you shouldn't be wearing that unless you're mouldy you're trying to be mouldy well I don't I wear one and I'm not mouldy no because it doesn't fucking matter you're a gifted one you're coming out with me and so that's why I found it weird I was like yeah but other than that every single other person I talked to you were great and we'll be back next year we'll talk about the positive guys it's a bloody great event fucking good event go along to it we'll see you there

12:44Jason Hoyte:go on then big show 47 weekdays on Horaki by the way wrapping up yeah righto

12:47Mike Minogue:fuck 13
