In short
The hosts riff on annual leave and work rhythms, then pivot into a philosophical discussion about “what is life,” meaninglessness, and finding joy in small moments; they also touch on health (blood pressure, cutting down vaping/smoking) and golf habits.
Guests
No named guests. The episode is a roundtable among the regular hosts (Keezy, Jase, and Moji/“Moji” mentioned), plus “Indy” referenced as someone they’ll speak with.
Key claims
There is “no meaning” to life; if you search for meaning you’ll be bitterly disappointed; joy is found in small and bigger moments. Cutting down cigarettes/vaping helps health and mood.
Notable examples
A philosophical moment after arguing with his daughter about getting up; golf “vape after every shot” and the “dart”/smoking habit on a specific hole; fear of doctors raising blood pressure.

0:16Keyzie:Yeah man. How are we going fellas? Tuesday. Yeah. I'm not stoked about it. Why? It just feels like a really long week already. Yeah. To be honest. Well, it's been so long since you've had a break, man. You should have a holiday. For everyone out there, Jase has got a week of holidays. He just doesn't know what to do with it. That's true, actually. I don't. I really don't. He's had how long you been working since you had your big holiday, your big one? March. March. Beginning of March. So when we came back from Europe, God, if he wasn't in a hurr of a mood. I love how it was our fault. Yeah, it was our fault.
0:52Keyzie:I wasn't in a hurr of a mood. Yes, you were. I was fascinated by it. There was a week there where you were in a hurr of a mood. Yeah, you were. I was not in a hoo-riven mood. You were. And it's fine. You were behaving in a way that seemed like you were in a hoo-riven mood. Right. Pugs agrees. Pugs agrees. And there's nothing wrong with that. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But the question becomes, what do you do? Because we had our holiday. Do you remember we went to Europe, Keezy? How could I forget? Come back feeling so refreshed. Yeah, yeah. And so then it's like, for you, Jase, do you take it now or do you save it?
1:19Yeah, yeah.
1:20Keyzie:I think if I was in a hoo-riven mood, you guys came back from a massive holiday and were still sort of half-arsing it. No. You know what I mean? I was expecting the fellas to come home brimming with ideas. We were. We took you a little blast in the day. The WhatsApp group was overflowing for two weeks. Mate, we had so much stuff. There was so much. But no, but it's true. My wife said the same thing to me last night. She said, well, what are you doing with your week off? And I said, I don't know.
1:47Mike Minogue:Well, that's the problem. She said, oh, I don't have enough leave. I need more weeks off. Then you have a week off. You don't know what to do.
1:53Keyzie:It's a matter of trying to combine it with my wife, and it's just tricky. Right. You know what I mean? So it's like, I mean, I could take the week off, but then it's just me. Yeah. And it's like, well, I want to spend my time off with my whanau. Well, why can't she take a week off? Well, because she's taken quite a bit off this year. Well, then regardless, she can't take any time off, so you're going to be on your own. She can take time off and not get paid. Sure. And I've got my dog squad money, so I can cover it. Yeah, every day. We'll just do that, man. No, it's more what am I going to do with it.
2:24Keyzie:Yeah. I'm thinking actually I just don't take it at all, and then I have a month off at the end of the year. Well, you get a month off anyway. No, I don't.
2:32Mike Minogue:You get three weeks off.
2:33Keyzie:Is that all it is?
2:35Mike Minogue:Yeah. I think so.
2:35Keyzie:Yeah, so. Which end would you take it at, Jase? I'd take it at the beginning of – no, I'd take it in December. Yeah, you'd have to because it's this year. Yeah, it's this year and who knows. I mean, next year's a long way away. Well, that would be on next year's, you know. Yeah, yeah. And next year could be irrelevant. Yeah. But no, I'm kind of, I'll figure it out at some stage. It's just trying to time it and make it as easy as possible for Keezy and you there, baby. Well, that's right. I can understand that, man. And I appreciate it. Absolutely, I do. Yeah, thanks, man. I'm probably going to take another week off in September, fellas.
3:10Oh, okay. Then another week off in October. And then I'll just have to white-knuckle it through to the end of the year. When are you taking another? Oh, you're taking one off on Friday, aren't you, Keezy?
3:22Mike Minogue:They're going to stag do. Yeah, yeah. And then I've got a wedding in like a month's time. I can't remember. In October at some point, I've got a wedding on a Friday as well. Yes. But other than that, mate, I'll be here. Good shit, man. He loves it.
3:33Keyzie:Either that or I split it in half and I just have a couple of long weekends, which might actually work better.
3:39Mike Minogue:Well, I reckon just – oh, that's right. Because if you do it that week that Mogi's off after Fiji – Yes. You could extend your stay in Fiji and play that golf course like five days in a row. Oh, God, you'd love it. You'd be on your own.
3:51Keyzie:That is really tempting. Why don't you do that? Possibly. And then stay with Mogi. Yeah. But I don't know if my wife would forgive me if she wasn't there. Well, she could go. She could go. She could be your caddy. Yeah. I'd like a caddy. A caddy would be great. Give it a hand. I'd go for the four-iron here, Hoity J. You'd get pretty abusive pretty quick, I think, to a caddy. What the fuck is this club? It's dirty.
4:17Mike Minogue:No, it would be just what you do at a regular game, but just wearing like a tropical shirt, which is effing and jeffing and punching the vape. That's all it would be. It's the only difference. And your wife would be in like a coconut bra and a flax skirt with flowers in her hair. Yeah. That's the only difference. I'd be distracted if that were the case, Keezy.
4:39Keyzie:The old coconut bra.
4:41Mike Minogue:Yeah, yeah, I get it.
4:42Keyzie:I'm with you, man. But no, I've got a new philosophy in my golfing because Keezy told me off for being shitty. I actually had a word with him.
4:51Mike Minogue:I said he's not allowed to F and Jeff around Fiji.
4:53Keyzie:so I've taken that on board and I'm still waters on the course now
4:59Mike Minogue:nothing flusters them
5:00Keyzie:underneath just a seething raging volcano that will come out at some inappropriate time further down the line that's right you'll have a heart attack on the course what a way to go in Fiji
5:11Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Big Show weekdays from 4 on Radio Hauraki The Hauraki Big Show podcast
5:20Keyzie:I used to think back in my 30s I was always going to have a heart attack, but that's when my blood pressure was through the roof, through my fucking horrendous drinking.
5:29Mike Minogue:Is it real chill now, your blood pressure? He refuses to get it done because going to the doctor gives him high blood pressure because he's worried about what his blood pressure's going to be.
5:37Keyzie:But back in my 30s I was like very red all the time. And people used to say to me, God, I bet you've got – I've lost a lot of my redness.
5:47Mike Minogue:And that was from hitting the piss. Your ruddiness from the piss.
5:49Keyzie:Having the piss and the durries and the stress of bringing up kids. Yeah, right. And not having any cash. Yeah, true. That's four pretty. Stressful bastards. Yes. I can see how that happened. Broke because you spend all your money on piss. Well, I was a cheap drunk. That was a good thing. Pretty cheap drunk. But, yeah, no, I need to sort it out, fellas. I'll let you know as soon as I know, all right? Yeah, I think I'm just going to have to make a call because I can see I'm going to get a little bit of pushback. From me? No, not from you. No, no, you do you, Moji. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And I'll figure it out.
6:24Mike Minogue:I don't know if you will because the last time I spoke to them, they were like, as long as Keezy's here, the show's all G. That's true, yeah. That's what they said. That's true, yeah. Yeah. And that is true. They said that. Yes. I believe you. Yeah. No, I know. I'm just crazy that they'd say that. By the way, you think you have to convince me. That sounds spot on. Yeah. Yeah. Yes, so we'll see how we go anyway, Indy. Maybe the listeners could plan their leave around our leave. That's a good idea. But just know that we will be coming back. I'm glad to have some leave, though, and I'm glad that it's almost Springfield.
6:55Keyzie:It's great, isn't it? I am genuinely enjoying that. I mean, I'm not enjoying the pissing rain that comes every now and then, but I'm pretty philosophical. Fastest year of your life, man?
7:09Keyzie:No, I don't know.
7:10Mike Minogue:I don't know. I don't know. Probably. It's fucking flowing by. Flying by. Yeah.
7:17Keyzie:Well, it is pretty crazy that it's September, to be fair. That's what I mean. Yeah. That's fucked, mate. Yeah, it's cooked, isn't it, eh? This is chat, man. Well, it's like, you know, my wife's nanny used to say, the years go faster and the days go slower. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what happens when you get old. I was in a very philosophical mood. Life's taking forever. Yes, but. And it's going by very quickly. Exactly. Yes. I was in a very philosophical mood today. Oh, yeah. I had a bit of an F and Jeff with my daughter. Sure. Because she had to be somewhere and she was lying in bed. And it's like, I was going, well, and then I realised.
7:52Keyzie:It was like, well, it's your life. So I'm not going to sit here and convince you to get up. You either get up or you don't. And that put me in a philosophical frame of my life. What is life? What am I doing with my life? Am I just going to grow old and die? You've been thinking about that for years. I have been, actually. But I go off it every now and then. and then I come back to it again? Yes. There is no meaning. Do we just work and work till we're old and then retire and die? What's the meaning of life for a rabbit? What's the meaning of life for an amoeba? There is no meaning, Jase. Yeah.
8:26You find your joy where you can find it in the small moments. That's right. And the bigger moments, and that's all you can do. There is no meaning. If you're looking for meaning, you'll be bitterly disappointed. Just do what you love, man. Okay. Talk shit on the radio. Nah, play golf. No. No effing and jeffing, you see. No, but he loves it. Suck the vape.
8:44Keyzie:I've actually cut back on the vape quite a lot. Jase, please. He's not vaping in the studio. I don't vape in work anymore. Yeah. I vape in the morning. If you leave that in the car, I'd like that. And I leave it in the car and I have a vape when I finish the job. That's the one, brother.
8:58Mike Minogue:Do you reckon you were vaping more than you used to smoke? Because I reckon you would have. Like when we played golf, you'd vape after every shot. Without a doubt.

9:06Keyzie:Yeah, because it's just so convenient. It is. You know what I mean? And you just go suck, suck. Well, with a cigarette, you have to smoke the whole thing. That's right. So that's why I don't know if I, yeah, I think I would have probably vape more.
9:17Mike Minogue:When we played the front nine, you'd always have a dart at that one in the bush, like hole six or whatever it is, once we get there. But by that stage now, you've already vape like a thousand times when we get there.
9:26Keyzie:The dress circle, that's called, that hole, Mogi. It's a good spot. Yes, it was a perfect spot for a day. Yeah, definitely. And then I was like, what the fuck? Yeah. I'm just smoking like a bastard. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. But I am feeling better for the lack of durries, I have to say. That's good.
9:43Mike Minogue:That's good, man. Thanks, fellas. That's really good, man. What are you going to do for your holidays? Why don't you just come in? That's a good idea. Other announcers on other stations literally have just gone, I don't care about my annual leave, I just need to be at work, and they've just come in. Yeah.
10:00Keyzie:Well, as I say, I might do that and then take a month off. Save it for the end of the year. Yeah. 23 days to get off at the end of the year.
10:07Mike Minogue:Oh, yeah. All G. All G. And then, of course, you'll be back, Jase, won't you? Because we've got that big thing that we do in January.
10:18Keyzie:Oh, yeah.
10:19Mike Minogue:If you're even around. Yeah, I mean, everything's up in the air.
10:22Keyzie:What are you saying? I'm going to die, Keezy? Oh, true.
10:25Mike Minogue:Yeah, sure. I hope not, Jase, man. Thanks, man. Yeah, yeah. Good on you, fellas. Hey, listen to the big show, 4 to 7, weekdays. While it's still around. While Jase is still here. Well, we're still here. Well, Jase is still with us. You can hear us.
10:40Keyzie:You hear my great Hoody J. Look what happened to my phone, by the way. Dropped it. It smashed.
10:45Mike Minogue:Can you tell that yarn again on the show, please? No, I'm not doing any more Hoody J yarns. Listen to The Big Show 4 to 7 weekdays on Radio Hoda.
