In short
The hosts banter about their shirts and then recap a “top secret” filming day, including lunch details and set roles, before discussing what it’s like for actors to learn lines and the embarrassment of messing them up on camera.
Guests
No named external guests appear. The episode features the regular hosts (Backbone/“Hoity J”/Jase, Keezy, Mogi, Ogie) and mentions actress Tracey Lee Gray, who plays the sister in Brokenwood, plus other “backbones” (unidentified).
Key claims
Keezy says he could handle acting pressure better than expected; actors often fail lines due to factors like not learning them, hangovers, or pressure snowballing. They also joke about creating Hauraki Big Show branded shirts and AI photo mashups.
Notable examples
Five lines (or ~25) of dialogue; lunch was mild green chicken curry with shelled and non-shelled beans; sitting with curry on set in the green room area; a story of an actor needing ~15 takes and still messing up lines.

0:15Keyzie:Oh, g'day fellas. Backbone. Hello there. New shirt, Mogi. Yeah, new shirt that Mogi's wearing. Brand new. It's a crackin' break. Boy, I feel so underdressed.
0:28Mike Minogue:You've got a couple of them titties sticking out. Hang on. Don't change the subject to Hoity J's magnificent buzzies. They are magnificent. They're in good form. And then you're wearing a, what do you call it, a muscle shirt because that's quite tight on you. It actually fits you very well. It's very flattering on you. Did somebody buy that for you? Or did you buy it? So my dad, one of my dad's friends who's a mechanic. And it's a Hoity J's shirt for people out there. Yeah. With Jase's face on it three times. He was at an op shop and it was in the clothing bin. So someone binned it. Was it really?
1:01Mike Minogue:Yeah. Somebody didn't want it. It's like brand new. That's what I'm saying. Somebody's been given that. It's got a real Christmas Secret Santa vibe.
1:08Keyzie:Can I have a look at the other face there? I can't see that. Oh, God, I'm a good looking bastard. Well, you were. Those are very old photos. Yeah, they are quite old actually. You're good stuff.
1:19Mike Minogue:Yeah, so he's my mechanic that gives my truck a warrant every year. Right. And he was like, oh, you've got to give this to Hoity J, man. Give him a shirt. Yeah, because I'll wear it. Well, just show it. He meant show it. There was four heads of Hoity J. Would you ever wear this? No. Yeah, you would. Why not? Give the appropriate time, man.
1:36Keyzie:Because I'd be a doofus if I did.
1:39Mike Minogue:That'd be cool, man. I don't think anyone would think you're a doofus for wearing a shirt with your own face on it.
1:44Keyzie:I tell you, and Moggy mentioned this before as well, and I think it would be a bestseller. A bestseller. Go on. Keezy on all fours looking over his shoulder. Because we've had some great AI photos sent in.
1:59Mike Minogue:What about just all of us on a nice T-shirt there that says Hauraki Big Show? It'll never happen. Nah. It's too hard, man. It's too hard. We're trying to get one of those going for literally years.
2:09Keyzie:Can we... I reckon... Only if it's a photo of the three of us that we have in the studio with me doing my cool hand movement.
2:16Mike Minogue:Well, the thing is, right, people send photos to my Instagram being like, Keezy, check this out. and someone there with a Hauraki Big Show shirt on. And it's like, do you remember from our first year when we did that photo of us with our shaved sides and mullets and we looked like we were in Narcos or something? Oh, yes. Like all these photos from back in the day put together in a Hauraki Big Show logo. And I was like, oh, that's cool. Yeah. It's not possible, though. Can't be done. Very, very difficult to achieve. It's actually super easy. I reckon Pugs could, if he put his mind to it, he could get a run of them ready to go in less than a week.
2:48The great thing you've got on that shirt, though, if we did go with the branding image, which is Jase with a cheese cutter on, which he's always wearing, reaching out with a hand, you could put something there that Jase is reaching out for. What do you think we could go with? I know what you're going with. What, a coozer?
3:09Keyzie:But, you know, rather than to be distracted by shirt chat, Yeah. I'd rather focus on just creating really good content. Yeah, right. Just that you started it. You pointed out his shirt. I was just pointing out, isn't it magnificent though, Keezy? Oh, it's a new shirt.
3:25Mike Minogue:So did you buy that today?
3:27Keyzie:It's just absolutely spanking. Now, this is a very interesting story. I've had this shirt for years, fellas. No. Oh, come on. No way. No, it's true, true, true, true. Sealed away. And I've just not worn it, fellas. Oh, wow. That's another true story right there. Normally, I'd never wear a shirt in here, would I? Because I'm T-shirt boy. Yes. But then I had to do something today for work, so I had to have a shirt on. But I think it's all right.
3:49Mike Minogue:You know it's got on the back of it, it's got a picture of a direwolf, eh? Yeah, I know. That's why I bought it. That's why I bought it. Because direwolves have got my back. Yeah. You know what I mean? Totally, man. But I'm happy with it. Nice little shirt there. Yeah, nice fabric. You know, summertime, I'll be, can you keep your eyes here, man? It was just two guys chest bumping each other.
4:10Keyzie:And, yeah. Eyes to the front, Keezy. Sorry man We've missed that Haven't we What's that Eyes to the front Yes we have We've been doing it Well it's summertime And Keezy's out of control
4:23Mike Minogue:I love that this is going to be on YouTube Because there'll be video footage of me Not looking at it at all Whereas there'll be footage of Jase's eyeballs Coming out of his head And his tongue rolling up Along the floor there Yeah What else happened to you today jizz Oh you know a bit of this bit of that Because you're filming a top secret project We can't talk about obviously Yes, yes, it was. Yes, yes. Really top secret, this one.
4:47Keyzie:It's always interesting going back into the fray, as they say, and it's like, oh, can I still do this? Fuck yeah, I can.
4:57Mike Minogue:The Hauraki Beach Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. Oh, g'day, mate. Oh, hi, mate. Yeah. The Hauraki Big Show podcast.
5:24Keyzie:Was it a good day's filming?
5:25Mike Minogue:Yeah.
5:26Keyzie:Who did you hang out with? Oh, look, I don't want to go into details. You know one of the people very well. I do, yeah. Tracey there, she's lovely. Backbone, backbone. Hashtag backbone.
5:35Mike Minogue:Oh, Tracey, is that the actress who plays your sister in Broken Wood? Tracey Lee Gray, is that her name? Yes, it is. Thank you, thank you.
5:41Keyzie:Yeah, and a couple of other backbones who I can't remember their names. Yeah, good on you, mate. Good day, though? Yeah, it was good. How many lines? What was lunch? Lunch, mogi. This is interesting.
5:52Mike Minogue:I've asked that question twice and he's ignored it twice in favour of your question. How many lines?
5:56Keyzie:What, you want a quantity of lines? Yes. Okay. I had five lines. Maybe 25 lines.
6:06Mike Minogue:Okay, how many paragraphs?
6:07Keyzie:No paragraphs. To answer your question, Ogie, it was a green chicken curry. Very nice, actually. How was our spice level? Very mild. Yeah. That's a risk you take, isn't it? My spice level's out of control at the moment. It's too hot. Yeah, I've gone crazy on the spice. And also a very nice bean salad. I was just going to say about the beans, because often with your chicken green Thai curry there, they have the beans in it. So they kind of done it. Did they do a green bean and then a bean bean? It was a green bean and bean salad. It had freshly popped beans. Beans out of the shell and beans. Shelled beans and beans.
6:55Keyzie:And non-shelled beans. Yes. Did you fuck any of the beans? No. It was actually really embarrassing because I was like, I don't know where we're supposed to eat. And so I was following Tracy, who was in front of me. She was going for a dump. And she had her plate of food, and then she went into the main actor's green room. Curry. Green room. And it's just a little camper van. So I was like, oh, there's no room for old Hoity J in there. And then there was no other actors around, so I just sat on set with my green curry. Why don't you sit with the crew?
7:29Mike Minogue:God, I wouldn't do that, man. I bet you don't know anyone's name on that crew. Marty? The D-O-P. Oh, yeah, Marty, yeah. He lives on Waiheke there. He does, yes. What's the producer's name? Just around the corner from where I used to live. Tim Balm. Tim Balm. You don't want to go that high. You want to go the gaffer. Yes. Which is like a runner-ish kind of person. No, it's the head of the lighting department. Lighting. Why is it called gaffer? The key grip. You know his name? Yes. What's a key grip? Key grip's the head grip. What's a grip? A grip is the person who's in control of the movement of the camera and how the camera moves, so laying tracks, ricks, all that sort of stuff.
8:08Keyzie:Yeah, it's good stuff, Keezy. You'll learn all this when you finally get a part.
8:13Mike Minogue:I love this idea that Keezy's desperate to become an actor. When you finally get a part. I actually don't give a shit. No, but I'm keen though, Jase, if you put me forward, man. Yeah, well, actually.
8:28Keyzie:Like this thing you were filming today. They must be running out of actors. Yes, and I said there's this young fella. Oh, Keezy. And he's got a mate Pugsan. And he's got a mate called Pugsan who works in Studio B, and he's just a natural talent. I'll send you some vids through.
8:47Keyzie:It was really interesting. Would you freeze under the pressure of?
8:52Mike Minogue:I don't think so. Do you know what I like about this? Jace has come in today, whoever of a mood, and then just running you down is cheering him right up. and meanwhile I'm here hey Hoity J with my Hoity J shirt on like loving it knowing he's got his new shirt on
9:08Keyzie:no one backs Keezy like old Hoity J that's true
9:11Mike Minogue:that's true
9:12Keyzie:do you back me in man

9:13Mike Minogue:yeah I'll back you in I don't think I would freeze I think I'd be fine yes because if I can do live TV I can do that I don't know it's a different Keezy
9:20Keyzie:it's a very different skill Keezy I'm not sure oh totally especially if you had like a paragraph I don't think you could do I could see you doing the first especially with you and your lines Keezy yeah that's what I mean you do a couple of lines and then you'd butcher it.
9:33Mike Minogue:You'd butcher it. First of all, when I'm doing live TV, it's not all autocue, right? There's a lot of ad-libbing and stuff.
9:38Keyzie:Yeah, well, that's what I mean. When you've got a script that you can't go away from and just ad-lib.
9:45Mike Minogue:Just ad-lib. And just make it better. You'd fall to pieces. I reckon I could do it. I mean, far out. You guys do it. True. That's how I look at things as well.
9:54Keyzie:There's some, you know. If that idiot can do it, I can do it. I've known over the years quite a few actors where lines are the bane of their lives. I remember being on the set once and this guy just couldn't do it. Yes. You know, an experienced actor. And the other thing was it was ensemble. So to go person one, person two, person three, person two. So even to get to him took forever. Yeah. And then when it got to him, he just dropped the basket. Yeah. Oh, sorry, everyone. He didn't really seem to give a fuck. But it was about 15 takes. Wow, yeah. It was horrible. But then you start going, oh, God, this is embarrassing.
10:38Oh, God, fire him. Quick, fire him. Get him off the set. And then they finally nail it, and then you fuck the line. And then they weren't rolling the camera.
10:46Mike Minogue:Yeah. But that person there in that situation, based on my very limited experience, just didn't spend enough time learning the lines. Well, sometimes you can learn them too much. It could be any number of things. It could be hungover. It could be, oh, all of a sudden, just shit in the bed. Somebody said something to them. Yeah, right. You can have all the lines are in there, and then when the cameras come on, the lights come on, Yep, gone burgers. Gone burgers. And then it just gets worse and worse and worse. Same with laughing on set.
11:15Keyzie:It is. It's exponentially one of those things that the more you fuck it up, the more pressure you feel, and thus the more you fuck it up. When you start going red. Do you know when you're in class, and this probably didn't happen to you, Jase, because you knew everything. Yes, true. But when you're in class at high school and you didn't know, you're sitting there thinking to yourself, I've got absolutely no idea what this prick's talking about. Yes. And then you can feel that someone's about to be asked a question. Yes. And you're just sitting there thinking, please don't ask me this question because I've got no idea.
11:49And you go hot. Yeah. They ask you and then you're just on fire. So they go, young Mogey over there. And you just call them a fucking arsehole, and then you get kicked out of the class, and you go, oh, thank God for that.
12:00Mike Minogue:What is two plus two? I don't know, you fucking arsehole.
12:03Keyzie:I've definitely been in quite a number of scenarios like that with actors that are butchering their lines. It's not pleasant. It becomes very uncomfortable. Yeah, Kees. Very uncomfortable.
12:18Mike Minogue:But guys, my dream of being an actor is, you know. On Brokenwood. On Brokenwood. Well, what would the relationship be? You hire me at your Trattoria Is it still a Trattoria? You come in with your bow tie on I literally auditioned for it the other day Yes, you did Yeah, yeah Did you audition for it? At your house, my house Oh, that Yeah I'll just be that guy Yeah, sure man I think so I could just be making limoncello
12:41Keyzie:I don't know if my Trattoria's still going actually
12:44Mike Minogue:Oh, really? I've got my pub I'll work at the pub Okay I'll just be hammered at the pub Yeah Was the Trattoria one episode only?
12:52Keyzie:No, I don't think so went on for a while quite a few seasons I'm asking the wrong guy yeah you are
12:58Mike Minogue:you are actually hey listen to the big show 4 to 7 weekdays hauraki
