In short

A “disclaimer” style chat about holiday plans in Queenstown and, mainly, the “ick” (turn-offs) couples feel toward each other—plus a quick recommendation of Ricky Gervais’ Netflix show “Alley Cats.”

Guests

Phil and “Mogey” (Pugs). No other guests appear. Backgrounds mentioned: Mogey is a dad planning ski/snowboard lessons for his daughter and partner; Phil is joining the trip and talks about cold-plunge/sauna routines.

Key claims

Cold plunge after sauna makes people feel “brand new” and energised; infrared saunas didn’t help Mogey. “Ick” triggers include “Gumby” clumsiness, skinny jeans, and poor diving. Mogey’s wife is supportive of his beret.

Notable examples

Mogey ate it on an icy snowboard run; his wife got “the ick” from him not warming up for a 4x100; early dating story of her tripping over a bag strap. Alley Cats is “full on” with swearing that becomes funny.

0:15Mike Minogue:Oh, g'day Phil. Back, mate. Hello. Yeah, that's how we do it. No hoity J today. Mogey, you're off tomorrow. I'm off, man. I'm out of here. Going down south, man. Going down to Queenstown. Can't wait. I thought I might do a half day of skiing. Skiing, right. Skiing or snowboarding on Wednesday. Then I'm meant to be meeting Matt Heath and his new fiancee at a bar. Which bar? Probably at the resort I'm staying at. But actually, no, we've changed our mind. He came up with another bar, so we're going to go there. Then Thursday, half day of snowboarding. I think it's going to be a lot for the kid. Yeah, actually.

0:50A whole day and a lot for me.

0:52Mike Minogue:But at least you'll come back with a yarn about how amazing Mogi Minogi is at snowboarding. Yeah, I think we've parked that chat. and then on Friday big lunch long lunch fuck yeah no skiing Saturday and Sunday because it's because it's bad weather I'm guessing nah public more people weekends you know so I just yeah a couple of half days but I just want to get some great little cold plunge joints and saunas one on the one on the lake so you have a sauna and then you jump into the lake holy holy shit

1:26Jason Hoyte:I like the idea of a natural cold plunge more than I do an ice bath. Yeah, yeah, totally. My partner did a sauna the other day, and that was right on the beach. This guy, it was like portable. And so she hit the sauna and then straight into the sea. Yeah, boy. Get back in there and get another round of it. I don't get it. Yeah, boy. Teaser, you should do it. And then you can talk about it. Because I can tell you, I wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't amazing. It is fucking unreal. What are the benefits? What do you feel afterwards? feel.

1:54Mike Minogue:So is it like you've gone for a mean run and you're like the endorphins? Super highly energised, great for a hangover but yeah, endorphins are through the roof without having to go for a run but just absolutely feel fucking as brand new as it's possible to feel. Do you think it's the same as when you get up and you just run and go for a big swim first thing in the morning in the ocean and you hop out and you're like oh yeah.

2:15Jason Hoyte:It's not the same but it's a similar kind of rush. Like I love that buzz as well. When you're staying somewhere and you're right by the beach. over you know and you go for a swim in the ocean you're like oh my god you come at you're like i'm brand new and then you know three minutes away but uh yeah no it's bloody good i've done the infrared thing i don't get that i've not felt anything what is that any benefit to that uh it's meant to be so you stand in front of infrared light you have infrared saunas and stuff which i don't really like it's just a dude with a barcode scanner running it up and down you up and down you Beep.

2:47Just focusing on your downstairs. Beep, beep, beep, beep. And there's meant to be benefits for that, but I haven't felt good. Right. I haven't noticed anything, so I've given up on that.

2:57Jason Hoyte:That's the best way to do it, is to do what makes you feel good, man. Do what makes you feel good, man. So there's going to be a lot of wine. You're going to be fucking hungover. It's going to be great. I am. It's going to be great. I am, but we're going to be starting early most days. Does your missus ski? No, she's going to be learning. So she's getting lessons. My daughter's going to get lessons, and I'm going to get lessons. I was going to ask how you rate yourself in the snow. Well, I rated myself – I used to be able to snowboard, but then I went up last year. But I went up on the last day of the season, so it was super icy.

3:29And I just – I told you this, yeah, didn't I? I can't remember. You ate shit the whole way down. Because you try and stop and you're just skidding on ice. And so I wasn't – it was my first day in many, many years. as I was just shit, just falling all the way down. Yeah. So I did one run, we'll call it, and it was just an absolute disaster.

3:50Mike Minogue:My wife would get the ick from that if she was watching. 100%. Yeah, she would. So while I was falling on my ass all the way down, I hear this voice, how you going, Mogi? Fuck. And there's somebody on a ski lift who I don't know. Tell me their phone is out. Who I don't know. Oh, how good would that have been? I wonder what that was. But I'm wearing like goggles and I don't know how they knew. Was your nose poking out of you? That was my nose. That was it. Every time you, fuck. Yeah, fucking back, mate. Fuck, son. Da-doosh, da-doosh, da-doosh. Da-doosh, da-doosh. But yeah, so this time will be better.

4:24But I'm just sort of thinking in terms of wanting to be able to enjoy it. But I know it does take about, my brother goes quite a lot and he reckons it takes a few hours. I think he said to like half a day to get better or to get back to yourself. But I'm not going to do that.

4:37Jason Hoyte:The Hauraki Big Show Weekdays from 4 On Radio Hauraki Now that's good listening And it's live What are you listening to there? Oh me? Oh sorry I was listening to the Radio Hauraki Big Show Right 4 to 7 weekdays Yeah that's quite specific And iHeartRadio Wado Cheers The Hauraki Big Show Podcast

5:07Mike Minogue:Well the thing is too the other thing that's really unattractive and will give my partner the ick is if you're pizzaring down the slope on a skis as well

5:14Jason Hoyte:Is she really good or something? No Right So she's just got no Her ick Her ick is someone being Gumby

5:20Mike Minogue:Yeah And so if she was watching like I hate to do a drive-by on a random person but let's say producer Ruda from The Breakfast Show If she was watching him try to catch a ball or something and then he dropped for some reason my wife just goes Oh don't She just gets the ick from it. What about when you pulled up in the 4x100? How'd she feel about that? No, she was genuinely fucked off that I didn't warm up properly. Because that hobble was... She was like, why the fuck didn't you warm up properly? That was the continuing to try that would have given me the ick. Excuse me, I still finished the 100 metres.

5:51Mike Minogue:I know. Holding on to my quad. There's something, and I hate to reminisce on this thing from a year ago. Was it a year ago? Over. But there's something about running down 100 metres and then Mania Stewart just steaming past you there really. It's like, fuck, look at him go. He's out of control. He's fast. Are you a bit Gumby, Pugs?

6:10Jason Hoyte:Just a little bit? Yeah, I can be, absolutely. But fortunately, I'm with a partner who is just as, if not more Gumby than I am in terms of her coordination and things like that.

6:22Mike Minogue:I think it's because my wife's family, like the dad was a cricket coach. Her brother's big into cricket and rugby and stuff. Her mum was really sporty. and so if you bring home a dude who's like, I don't know, tripping over his feet trying to catch her, fucking I don't even know. But she's instantly like, ugh.

6:36Jason Hoyte:I'll never forget, and she would hate for me to say this, but very early on when we started dating and obviously she was still working at a radio station across the way there down here. Yes. I went over there one day and I was sitting with her and the other people because I've got friends over there. Yeah, sure. And she. You were over there sniffing around. Yeah. Yeah, I was over there sniffing around. Like a bloodhound. Yep. And then she was walking and her bag was on the floor. Right. And her foot caught her bag strap. And she did the whole step, step, step across the whole office trying to catch herself.

7:11Jason Hoyte:Oh, trying to stop from falling over. Yeah, but the momentum was too much. And that was very early on in our relationship, so that gave me a few points ahead for any ick that I might bring up. As a man, you don't really care. No, no, but I knew that I would eventually give her the ick for something, so it was nice to have leverage. Yeah. What gives her the ick, man? What gives her the ick? Have you figured it out yet? I think if I was going to give her the ick, it would have happened a long time ago. Was it the beret? She was very supportive of the beret. Yeah, she would be. She'd get around the beret.

7:39Jason Hoyte:Absolutely. You've seen her fashion. Just asking. Yeah, it does. Just asking. She wears a beret, doesn't she? She does have. She doesn't wear them enough, I would say. Yeah, yeah. I'd like to see more.

7:48Mike Minogue:I think her ick would be like a man in skinny jeans. A hundred percent. A hundred percent. Yep. Skinny jeans. Like really tight, like Hoity J's ones. Yeah. And mine. I actually had some over the weekend because I had some old skinny jeans. Oh, yeah. And they'd come out of – we left some boxes around our last house and they got dropped off and I was like – one pair was brand new but they were a size small for some reason so I don't know how you ended up with those. So brand new with a tag still on them. Then another two that had been worn extensively and I got them up to like halfway up my calf.

8:23I said to Zah, we can get rid of these. These are never coming back. They were like tight.

8:31Jason Hoyte:There's tight jeans, but then there's the really, I used to have the ones that would squeeze your calf and then you'd have a massive drop crutch. Yeah, that's right. See, that's what's great about the current sort of style

8:42Mike Minogue:is just straight cut shit, which is so, because, man, skinny jeans, you had to get stuff out of your pocket whenever you sat down.

8:48Jason Hoyte:Oh, and I'd be walking around with a phone bulge.

8:51Mike Minogue:Yeah, phone, yeah. Hog. Nah, not really. No hog. No hog. Hogless. What gives your missus the ick? Has she shown any? Because it's been a topic. Probably ripping ass. I don't know. Oh, really? I don't know if it's the ick. That's not the ick. No, it's just gross. Yeah, it's gross. But the ick is, yeah, sort of a... Like a turn off. Yeah, I don't know. I don't think so. Well, she doesn't voice it. She, um... What about... For me, it's not really the ick. It's just funny to me. She's not a good diver. She can't dive into a pool. Oh, that, yeah. That's quite specific. Is she like a little bit belly floppy?

9:28Mike Minogue:Hands in front? A little bit too scared to just commit to the dive. Yeah. I have said to her, you know, a hot woman being able to dive into a pool. It's almost like a comedy sketch when a really hot woman is walking around a pool and then belly flops into a pool. Because in a James Bond movie, the hot woman hops in, gives him a wink, then dives in elegantly. Doesn't make a splash. Where she's belly flopping. So that's pretty funny. We have a laugh about that, by which I mean I laugh about it and it makes her self-conscious. But what else? And then I think the other thing that is hot is a woman that can play pool.

10:09Yeah.

10:10Mike Minogue:Right, quite specific. It's about being in a bar. A woman that can play pool, yeah, that's good stuff. And actually a woman who's coordinated in general is good. I like being able to play tennis against my wife. Like we can play a game of tennis and it's actually decent, you know. I like that. You like that? I like that, Pugs. Do you like it when she just chucks a sleeper on you whenever she wants and just gets you in a headlock and fucks you up? Gives you a noogie? No, I told her she had to stop doing that. She choked me out. Fellas, I watched a show last night. Good gold. Good gold. Alley Cats, the new Ricky Gervais.

10:45Oh, any good? Oh, you'll talk about it, obviously. I want you guys to watch it. It's not for your wife. Yeah, right. Pretty full on? It's so full on, but I want you guys to watch it. I watched five episodes of it last night. There's only six episodes there, 16 minutes long. But I'd love to get everybody's feelings.

11:02Jason Hoyte:Knowing my usual perspective, do you think? Oh, you're going to be. I'm going to be. You're not going to be a fan. So don't watch it with my partner either. No, no, absolutely watch it because I think maybe it goes so far that it's funny again, but there's some stuff in it that I was like, ooh, and I'm dying laughing. Oh, that's good. But it was a lot of, you know when there's heaps of swearing and something? and they're swearing for the sake of it. Yes. It goes so much further past that that it becomes funny again. Right, we'll see. Like F and Cs. Yeah. From cats. Yeah, a cat. All right. Yeah.

11:37A cat, I'll say it, fucking hedgehogs and rats. What? Fuck. Oh, it sounds mean. It's just so crazy. Fuck yeah. You love that, Pugs. And my wife, who's, you know, she doesn't have my sensibility. She was laughing. Okay. Against her better judgment, you know. Yes. Yeah. Yeah, so Alley Cats, Netflix, get it in you. Five bussies.

12:02Mike Minogue:Hey, listen to the big show, 407 Weekdays Radio Haraki. And listen to the big show, 407 Weekdays on Radio Haraki. All right.
