In short

Sleep deprivation and “letting it breathe” (especially around bedtime/nude vs underwear), plus morning routines and cortisol management.

Guests

The episode features three co-hosts of The Hauraki Big Show—Backbone, Keezy, and Mogey (Jason is mentioned as “Jase”/Jason). Backgrounds: They’re radio hosts who banter about personal habits, relationships, and health myths, with one host describing his wife’s light sensitivity and sleep habits.

Key claims

Being tired can become “normal”; low cortisol/anxiety mode is blamed for waking up depressed; healthy cortisol rhythm includes morning sunlight, hydration, and delaying coffee; underwear vs going nude affects comfort (“choking it out” vs letting it breathe).

Notable examples

Bath + watching This Worry Is Life; wife elbowing him in the dark; duvet “cocoon” from sweaty thighs; sardines/kimchi breakfast debate; baked beans with bacon and chili.

0:00Mike Minogue:Okay, now, full disclosure, it's recording, that's a good start. Full disclosure, fellas, brand new system's been installed. Yeah. So I have no idea if this is going to work or not, but we'll have a crack. Here we go.

0:12Keyzie:For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, or 4.0.

0:22Mike Minogue:4 to 7 every weekday on Radio Hoda Q. Oh, g'day, fellas. Backbone. Hello, it seems - Look at Keezy's furrowed brain. Because what's happening here is it sounds like the sound effects, like the outro admin just then, was way quieter than our voices are. It's the best it's ever been. Looking at the waveforms, you know. Never better. It just felt crystal to me.

0:41Keyzie:You can't even see. The whole news system. Hey, Mogey, Mogey. Oh, Keezy's got a Coke. He's got a can of Coke there. Oh, dear. Oh, I'm shocked. He's looking a bit glassy-eyed as well. Yeah. A few beers last night, brother. Yeah. How'd you have a few beers last night? The old freebies there. Didn't you? I don't have one of those lights off the tray there. What is that, a pinot?

1:03Mike Minogue:I had a couple of beers, yes, with pugs. However, no, I just didn't sleep very well last night. You're really struggling at the moment, aren't you? But there's a bit, you're like, this apple cart's been rocked a little bit. Yeah. Apple cart's rocked a little bit. You've got moves on, there's things happening, you're stressed out. A lot of stuff happening. You're not in control, Keezy. Everything's not how it's meant to be. I'm careening out of control right now.

1:24Keyzie:The trailer's a bit open and the apples are just dropping out the side there. I'll tell you what will help, man. Wake up in the middle of the night and think about it.

1:32Mike Minogue:That's what I did. And it didn't really help. No. I couldn't think of anything. No. But then today I've just been a bit like, ugh. So now that I'm here, I'm just like, fuck, I'll have a Coke, man. Yeah, man, yeah. So I got to that with, because I do a lot of that. Sort of it's been better this year. And you just get to a point where being tired just becomes your normal. Yes, very much so. Which is really good. It's a great place to get to when you eventually get to that. It just becomes your normal. I'm not tired anymore. This is just how I feel. This is good. So you're awake all night and then you just work all day.

2:03Then you have a shit sleep and then you get up again, so on and so forth.

2:07Keyzie:You see these massive sacks under my eyes there, Keezy? I've been doing that three or four years. I mean, you've got legit things to worry about. Jason invents things. I just invent stuff.

2:20Mike Minogue:Yeah, right.

2:20Keyzie:But having said that, I've also had some very legit things to worry about, but I do invent stuff. You've forgotten about that stuff.

2:30Mike Minogue:Oh, that's right. Your wife's leaving you. That's the least of my problems. Yeah, and on the downside. That's a blip on the radar for you. Yeah, man. Yeah. No, I mean, I don't know about you guys,

2:47Keyzie:but I wake up every morning and I'm like, oh, fuck. Here we go again. Here we go. I do. I absolutely wake up and I'm fucking fizzing. The only thing I'm not super thrilled about is last night was good because I went home and I had a bath and I listened to the This Worry Is Life. I watched it on This Worry Is Life podcast on YouTube in the bath. Had a soak there, Keezy. Straight to bed. Lights out at eight o 'clock. Wow. And then my wife, because my wife can't handle any light coming into the room, so she puts her arm over her eyes. Yes. Right? and then her arm slips off her face and she elbows me.

3:24So I'm on her right. She always uses her right arm to cover her eyes, never her left. Her right, so just elbow me, put it back up. Elbow me, put it back up. You can see the pattern here, Keezy. It's just one of those things where I'm just like, she should get an eye mask. 100%. And she's got two. Doesn't wear them. No, she likes them. She just doesn't wear them. Yeah. So that's all good, man, because I'm sleeping like a baby over there anyway.

3:47Mike Minogue:Yeah. Do you know what would fix? I reckon you guys should have bunk beds. Yeah, it does feel like. My daughter's got a bunk bed. So swap that out and give her the double. It's getting to that point, you know,

3:59Keyzie:where you have your single beds with your ornaments in between. You know? You know what I mean? Matching quilted beds. What my wife does, she doesn't bash me, but she slowly slides down the bed. And so I'm like, you know. She's trying to slide out. And I'm trying to get my arm around and nestle into the buttock area. She doesn't want that. And she's just sliding further down the bed. But that's what got her into this problem in the first place is you doing that. What, trying to settle into it? Not trying to, successfully doing that. Into her buttocks. So she'd be fuming if she heard this.

4:35Mike Minogue:So she slowly makes her way down and out of the bed, whereas you - No, not out of the bed. She's got a bag packed by the door. And I'm like, I'll wake up at like three in the morning

4:45Keyzie:and I'll put my, oh, oh, she's not, and she's way down the door like this.

4:49Mike Minogue:And I'll go, hey, hey, where are you going? Get back. Whereas you grab all the blankets and turn it into a big pretzel. The Hauraki Beach Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. Oh, g'day, mate. Oh, hi, mate, yeah. Look, if you want the chance to win all our on-air competitions and stuff and get amongst the live conversation, Tune in to the Hauraki Big Show. Four to seven weekdays on Radio Hauraki and iHeartRadio. The Hauraki Big Show podcast.

5:25Keyzie:What I do is I get sweaty thighs. So I like cool duvet and sheets. So you're even in the summer, in the winter you get that? No, I don't really, but it's a comfort thing. And I put it between my thighs, right, and I clamp it. What do you do with your massive nutsack? And then I roll over. And as I'm doing that, because I've clamped the duvet between my thighs, I pull the duvet with me. Right. And I'll toss and turn all night. And so I end up like a caterpillar in a cocoon. And then you emerge. And my wife has a corner of it. You haven't answered my question about the nut sack. Well, my nut sack.

6:02Do you push your balls out to sit on top of your thighs or are they tucked in between your thighs?

6:06Keyzie:Well, they're in my undies. So they're not really doing anything. You've got undies on. Yeah. I don't go nude like you guys.

6:13Mike Minogue:That's disgusting. You have to go nude, man. Otherwise, you're wearing your entire life. You've got a waistband around your midriff. You've got to let it breathe. Let it breathe, man. You're choking it out, man. You're choking it out, bro. Brother.

6:26Keyzie:I don't know that my wife would be stoked if I was nude in bed.

6:30Mike Minogue:Really? My wife wouldn't give a shit because we're married, and she doesn't mind me being nude. Yes, it disgusts her.

6:36Keyzie:It is just how it is.

6:37Mike Minogue:She loves it, man.

6:40Keyzie:I find that interesting. I'm giving Jason tears. Because for someone that doesn't like being nude in front of everyone, you'll get your kid off. What?

6:50Mike Minogue:Me? Yeah, I mean, you're nude in bed. What do you mean? Of course I don't like being naked in front of everyone. Who likes being naked in front of everyone?

6:58Keyzie:I can see you. Through the window. He can see you through the window. If I didn't know that, I would see you as a full-pressed pyjama man. Yep. You know what I mean? I agree. You know, properly buttoned up. Long sleeves. Long sleeves. It's got a pocket on it, probably monogrammed.

7:15Mike Minogue:Yes. Little handkerchief folded up in there. You've got slippers. Slippers by the side of the bed. Yeah, a pipe. You just blow bubbles out of it.

7:24Keyzie:And you'll be in the lounge like, doosh, doosh, doosh, doosh, playing your game, dressed like that. Yeah. And your wife will be like, are you coming to bed? And you'll be like, in a moment, darling.

7:35Mike Minogue:That's not off my face.

7:36Keyzie:I'll just finish my glass of sherry.

7:39Mike Minogue:Port, actually, Jase. Port. Port. Penfolds, my favourite.

7:42Keyzie:God, I haven't had port in a long, long time. Well, I hope you're ready to have it again.

7:48Mike Minogue:Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. As part of my come dine with me, we're going to send all the wives to bed. Simply must. And then have a small glass of port and play PlayStation together. Circle jerk. Is that the name of the game you're playing at the moment?

8:00Keyzie:Doosh, doosh, doosh. Jerk, jerk.

8:04Mike Minogue:Doosh, doosh. Do you not do the hand movement with that? It's a double joystick. Yeah. Two joysticks, a couple of joysticks. Oh, it's funny stuff, guys. Oh, it's so good. Great stuff.

8:18Keyzie:We're doing breakfast tomorrow, by the way. So I want you to realise that we're going to go straight from here, straight to bed, sleep for two hours, get up and back into it. Well, it's good, isn't it? I always enjoy the first hour of breakfast because old Kesey takes about an hour to wake up. He does. And so you can just sort of have your fun with him. Yeah, you can. Yeah, just have your way with him.

8:40Mike Minogue:It's fine. What I actually want to remind is when I come in is you guys just are super chill.

8:47Keyzie:I'm always chill in the morning, man. Being good fellas about it. I'm depressed in the morning.

8:52Mike Minogue:Why do you wake up in the morning and go, oh, fuck, you've got this beautiful apartment, beautiful wife, lovely family, great job? Yeah, I think it's a job. You're probably going to have hot pot at some stage during the day, but you still wake up going, ah.

9:06Keyzie:I don't know what it is. Apparently, if I was watching this thing, it's low cortisol. I'm burning all my cortisol up.

9:13Mike Minogue:How do you get cortisol?

9:14Keyzie:I don't know, but it's something in the system where you're constantly in anxiety mode and you're burning shit up all the time. Right. And so you wake up just like, ah.

9:30Mike Minogue:Really? Even in your sleep, you're like that. But then I'll have a coffee. Is that true?

9:35Keyzie:You're heightening it. Yeah, too much cortisol.

9:37Mike Minogue:Here you go. Ways to support a healthy cortisol rhythm. Exercise. Yeah, I do that. I walk all over the place. Moderate to high intensity physical activity. No. Get morning sunlight. Step outside. View natural light within an hour of waking up. Where do they get that shit from? Where do they get that bullshit? I don't know, man. That's a new thing, that. That's just telling me to get some D. Vitamin D, 100%. Stay hydrated. That makes sense. Drink a glass of water right after waking up. This is a real thing. When you wake up, have a big glass of water. Don't have a coffee for an hour. I definitely have a coffee, but I start with a glass of water.

10:15Same.

10:15Mike Minogue:But don't have a coffee for an hour and you'll feel way better. Nah, fuck off. Yeah, fucking do what I want. Whoa, whoa. And eating a balanced meal. So, you know, no hot pots.

10:25Keyzie:I don't eat until about at least midday. And what are you eating? Go on, say it. Baked beans today. Come on, man. Some chopped up bacon, a bit of grated pepper. Some chilli I put in my beans and bacon. What's that? Hand motion you're doing? That's me chopping chillies. Doesn't look like it. I had a, we have a loaf, a sourdough loaf. Oh, yeah. Chopped a little bit off that, Keezy. Stick it in the toaster there. A little bit of butter, a little bit of avocado. Sardines. My wife started getting into the sardines. Oh, my God. But not the cheap version. These different ones in a round can. Oh, the fancy ones.

11:02Not the ones with the key.

11:04Mike Minogue:And they're all wearing top hats. They've got top hats on. That's all the sardines wearing top hats. Nice. We've got canes, and they're swirling them around. Very nice. I haven't had a sardine in years. Sardines and that other shit. Kimchi. I say as to her, I say as to her, I say as to her, I'm going to be popular in the office. Kimchi rules, man. Well, you'd be ripping ass, but. No, I meant my breath. And then she goes, oh, yeah, it does reek. And that was that. Did you have all those on the one piece of bread? Yeah. Oh, God. It was fucking nice, bro. Hey, this is a big show. Four to seven weekdays.

11:37Mike Minogue:Better than what, that shit you had? Radio Horaki.

11:40Keyzie:I had baked beans. Yeah, fucking shit. With chopped up bacon. Straight away, that's right. I fry off some bacon. Nah, baked beans is shit. Chuck the beans in there, pepper, white toast.

11:48Mike Minogue:I love beans. I would rather eat his. No. Thank you. Because I don't want to eat fish. Yeah, I know. because you don't like fish, which is why you go to Japan, you goose.

11:55Keyzie:I'm going to Japan to eat fish. It's funny that you mention sardines. I used to eat them all the time. So did my wife. She loved them. They're fucking good, man. These ones are really good. They're a different sort of a thing.

12:04Mike Minogue:I saw, Jase, you were holding a sardine. It was massive. It was like one of those photos of a guy with like a prize winning fish. Hey, this is the big show. Portal 7 Weekdays Radio. Is that the best you've got, man? Yeah, it's all I've got.
