In short

The hosts discuss “undiagnosed” ADHD/mental health, intrusive negative thoughts, and whether getting diagnosed or medicated is worthwhile; they also trade stories about stimming/noises, smoking vs vaping, and anxiety medication side effects.

Guests

No named guests appear. The episode is a conversation among the hosts (including “Moggy,” “Toddy,” and “Pugs”) plus references to an unnamed friend with an ADHD diagnosis and the hosts’ family members (e.g., a sister, a wife, and a mother).

Key claims

ADHD may be a spectrum; diagnosis is mainly useful for understanding the “machine,” not self-blame; meds can worsen symptoms before improving; intrusive thoughts can sometimes be quieted by focusing commands or smoking.

Notable examples

A public “shut the fuck up” outburst that briefly stops thoughts; a boss noticing constant noises; a friend’s “ADHD is like being possessed by your personality” comment; vaping causing severe throat impact; anxiety prescription initially increasing anxiety for weeks.

0:00Jason Hoyte:Hello.

0:04Jason Hoyte:Here we go. For all you mad bastards loving the Big Show podcast, get up even closer on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok or Raw Dog It. Four to seven every weekday on Radio Horete.

0:22Keyzie:Oh, g'day fellas. Hello. Hello.

0:28Keyzie:It was funny, actually, because my boss just said to me in the off, did you hear him, Moggy? Don't know. He said to me, do you realise, do you have some sort of earworm or something? And I said, what do you mean? And he said, oh, I'm just wondering if you're aware of the fact that you just constantly make a lot of noises. Did he say that? He said that, which I went, hang on. He's the last person. Yeah, hang on here. But I replied to him and I said, yes, I am aware of the fact that I do that. And then it's just funny because I've been coming in and out of the studio listening to Mogi.

1:09Keyzie:Do you think that we have – what is that? I don't know what that is. ADHD? Yeah, maybe. There was a great comment on that video that you guys sent, or that Kesey sent me with me in the kitchen. And the comment was, ADHD is like being possessed by your personality or some shit like that. Right. Something along those lines, and it had like 130 ,000 likes. But yeah, you're just nonstop. You're nonstop, and you don't even notice it. Well, I don't. I notice it in you I mean you seem like an insane man Yeah And then Toddy He's got a fucking cheek Yeah well that's what I mean I was like Excuse me

1:56Jason Hoyte:So you'll notice that my desk Is directly opposite him And he will put on headphones And have no idea What's coming out of his mouth And it'll be this It'll be him Tapping it on the keyboard And it'll be

2:13Jason Hoyte:So there you go So what we've found is is that there's something wrong with pugs. Yeah.

2:18Keyzie:Because three out of four backbones are off their fucking heads.

2:23Jason Hoyte:Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm two straight-edge fellas. I've got to loosen up a little bit, get some.

2:32Yeah, well, I do, like, I wonder how my wife deals with it because I actually don't think I'm as bad at home,

2:40Keyzie:but I probably am. You are. You're in your sanctuary. My wife said to, it must have been to my brother, she said, you can hear me coming from over a block away. So it's good. She said it's good because it gives her time to get our kid into bed because she always lets her stay up later. Yes. And to tidy the house up. Yes. You know, she's got about five minutes. It's a couple of Ks. Yeah, yeah. Shit, he's going to be home soon. I thought I can hear him stimming. And I do notice, that's the one thing I do notice, is the yawn. Yes. I'll go, ah! Yeah, yeah. And I'll do that walking down the street.

3:14I'll do it walking down Queen Street.

3:16Keyzie:Yeah. I've not seen anyone else doing that. Nah. And people turning around and looking. I'll tell you what I did. Literally turning around looking at you. It's fucking. I'll tell you what I did the other night, and this is a bit of a reveal about old Hoity J. It's not great. Uh-oh. It's not great. Because my head just yabbers away. Yeah. It's just constantly just hammering away at me. and sometimes were thoughts that I really don't appreciate, you know, just negative thoughts. Intrusive, maybe. Intrusive, negative, anxious, sort of ridden thoughts. And I was walking down. I was walking past Sky City after work, actually, and these thoughts were hammering away, and I had my headphones on listening to tunes, bloody hammering away there.

4:08Keyzie:and out loud I said to myself, shut the fuck up. Yeah. Like out loud. In public. In public. Yeah. And I went, oh, that's not good. But interestingly, interestingly, interestingly, my head did shut the fuck up for a couple of hours. Oh, right. Like I was just so over my negative thinking. But you would have been just solely focused on the fact that you'd had a verbal outburst in the middle of the street. Yeah. Just focus. That could have very easily turned into an anxiety-ridden thought process, but it didn't actually. It was just like, shut the fuck up. And then it was like, okay, good. We've had our conversation.

4:52That'll learn them in there.

4:54Jason Hoyte:The Hauraki Beach Show, weekdays from four on Radio Hauraki. Oh, g'day, mate. Oh, hi, mate. Yeah. Look, if you want the chance to win all our on-air competitions and stuff and get amongst the live conversation, tune in to the Hauraki Big Show, four to seven weekdays on Radio Hauraki and iHeartRadio. The Hauraki Big Show podcast.

5:20Keyzie:But, yeah, I mean, this whole ADHD thing is, you know, a good friend of ours, she recently got diagnosed with it. and we're actually quite similar people and she said to me, oh, you 100 % have ADHD. But I do think, I think there'll be a spectrum, right? There'll be a line and you sit on it somewhere. And I don't give a fuck if I've got it. I don't give a shit. I'm perfectly happy with how things are going. That's right. That's right. It does be nice. Because I think once you get diagnosed, then what? Drugs. Exactly. To be diagnosed means that you need treatment, I would generally think. I don't want any treatment.

6:10Jason Hoyte:Yeah, I agree that some people just like to know. For confirmation, maybe they've had trouble. Like my sister, for example, she's had a lot of trouble focusing and things like that, multitasking or whatever. So for her, it's just a piece of mind. To know what it is. I don't remember, I don't know what kind of action she's taken. But in that case, it's good. But for you, it's like, who cares? No, that's right. But I do believe that it is good to know what kind of a machine you're operating, right? Because you're just in a body. Yes. Your personality sits inside it and you can't help. You know, you can't help what it is.

6:44So there's no point blaming yourself for the kind of person you are because it's the body you were born into and it does its own thing. It had nothing to do with you. Do you know what I mean? It's a machine. You've been put into this machine. Yes. But the good thing is to learn how the machine works and then once you know how it works, to be able to use that in your favour. Yes. If you know what I mean. To your advantage. Yeah, to your advantage. As opposed to it being a hindrance.

7:07Keyzie:And that's kind of how I view it in the sense of, yes, you know, I'm kind of loud, but it's also a part of who I am and there is an equal positive side to the negative if there's a negative. And there is a negative because I do get very intrusive thoughts that repeat themselves over and over in a treadmill. That's not cool. That's not cool. No. But that's the thing. If you've got something that is negative, then it would be good to have, to be able to, is there something that can sort that out? Yes. And I would prefer never to take a drug unless it comes in a bag. Well, this is the thing, you know.

7:47Keyzie:Yeah. That'll straighten you right out. I have always. Because you never have voices in your head after that. Despite my addictions and so forth, I've always been a snob with pills. I've always been like, nah, nah, nah. And I remember years ago, we're talking 20 years ago, getting a prescription for anxiety. And I immediately took one and was massively anxious because I was like, oh, fuck. But that's also what they do as well, those fucking things. Yes, yeah. Because they make you worse for a couple of weeks or even longer. They do, yes. Before you get better. Yeah. What the fuck's that? So it's like it'll be about a month before you start to feel – you start to normalise.

8:37Keyzie:So in the meantime, you'll have a month of hell, of madness. And then it might not even work for you. And then it might not work. But we'll just experiment and see where we find you at. Just give me Valium and be done with it, all right? A few beers. A few beers. I'll tell you what. Now, give me a packet of durries. I'll be sweet as. I'll just go outside and have a durry. Is that quiet the thoughts down? Yeah, it does, actually. Gives you something to concentrate on. Yeah. God, I haven't had a durry in a long time. Truly, hand on heart. Don't look at me like that, Pugs. What do you call it there?

9:15Jason Hoyte:Magic round. When was that? Yeah, magic. Yeah, true. Yeah, was it? A little beer and a burger there, and you're having a little sugar. Yeah. It's pretty good, man. What? Siggy's?

9:25Keyzie:Well, you know, because Siggy's my greatest love, probably, of everything. I don't know why you quit. I really don't. Yeah, neither do I. I sincerely think that they're better than vaping. Yeah. Maybe.

9:36Jason Hoyte:Maybe. My mum, who's very, like, she doesn't know what goes on for me a lot of the time, but she called me one time quite recently and was like, just whatever you're doing, don't be vaping. Yeah. Just whatever you're doing. So I ignored everything. It was the vape. It's the vape. It is the vape. What is in that juice? What is in it? There's nothing natural in it. I can tell you that much. It's insane for people to be fucking hanging off those bastards. Well, yeah, because you had a hoon on Jase's one and it just about killed you. Oh, my God. Yeah. It's like sucking on a fucking exhaust on a truck.

10:12It just hit the back of your throat. Yeah, it can do that. In a hell of a load it was. So I had a couple of goes on it. Yeah, me. The same thing both times. Yeah, no good. So that's why I was no good with him. But I don't know. How many mig is that? Milligrams, you wouldn't even fucking know. Two. Fucking Jesus.

10:31Keyzie:Is that a lot, is it? No, because there's four. I know. I'm sure I used to do. I'm sure I used to do two. But that was, fuck, that was for long. I don't remember you having a vape. When did you have a vape? I vaped when me and Jase gave up. And I'd given up for ages. We'd gave up for ages. We did very well, Jase. And then I went down to Levin for a 40th, and I was like, ah, it's going to be no good. So I'm going to grab one of these vapes just to get me through. And it fucking killed me. Yeah. So then I ended up on the vape, but my missus didn't mind. So then I'm on the couch, and I'm, you know.

11:05So then you're straight into that. And it was, I have never felt worse in my life than when I was vaping.

11:11Keyzie:That is, you know, the real, I mean, they're fucked all over. But the thing about vapes is, you know, our boss here was telling me, he vapes in bed, he vapes on the bog, he vapes everywhere he is. Yeah, it's too convenient. Yeah, I mean, you don't light up a ciggy in bed, generally speaking, unless you've been making love, pugs. so I imagine you've stuck a few in your life

11:35Jason Hoyte:I'd probably still go outside I'd be like hey listen the idea of doing that yeah I do too what? the idea of having sex

11:50Keyzie:those were the days eh fellas what days? the vigorous love making yes I'm home man You don't need to fucking tell me that. Nobody's disputing any of that. I mean, you're still in that vigorous stage. Yeah, you're still there. That's all good, man. You're a young fella. As you should be in that vigorous stage. They call him Captain Jack, innit? Yeah.

12:18Jason Hoyte:So good. Hey, if you want more of that, listen to the big show. What did you think of my throbber today? Bit outside the box, wasn't it? He said great variety today for all of us, but yours is a shitter.
