0:00Stephen Morris:And people think like day trading is sexy and swing trading and all that stuff. It's not. It's so stressful, man. Like it is nothing but a bucket of stress. And I don't want to be stressed out about my investments. I just want to chill. So that's the biggest lesson I've learned that has moved the needle for me is just relax. It's okay. We've done our research. We know what we're talking about. Andrew is not stupid and, you know, we're going to be okay. This show is sponsored by Liquid IV. As we finally transition out of the indoor hibernation and start spending more time outside, staying hydrated is huge.

0:43Stephen Morris:For me, spring means I finally get to get back out on the water and spend long hours fishing. But those long, sun-drenched days require better hydration to actually enjoy them to their fullest. Liquid IV helps with that. 1:20Stephen Morris:And it feels great knowing liquid IV can help boost hydration faster than water alone. It's incredibly convenient to use on the go, especially out on the boat. You literally just tear, pour, and enjoy. My go-to flavor is lemon-lime, but they also have great flavors like guava and golden cherry. I know I can trust Liquid IV because it's clinically tested and backed by a scientific advisory board, real experts, and real science. Just one stick and 16 ounces of water hydrates faster than water alone.

4:13Evan Raidt:welcome back my name is evan ray we are here as always to help you make sustainable financial changes without breaking any sweat and today i'd like to welcome a new face at least to to this podcast to this series not to me but to you guys for this series steven morris i want to welcome he's a new host of the or new co-host of the investing for beginners podcast the main show and i'm excited to welcome over here and kind of hear some of his personal finance background and get some of his takes and angles and introduce him and his values

4:40Stephen Morris:how are you doing today steven i'm fantastic how are you i am doing even more fantastic but i'm

4:46Evan Raidt:going to start off with the question that i i know you already know what's coming now you're already aware of this question but i'm gonna ask you want me to ask it for you go ahead and ask

4:53Stephen Morris:it for me go ahead and introduce it for me so steven yes sir uh what is oh crap no you don't

5:02Evan Raidt:even know you think you know but you don't know you don't have you hang on it's coming it's like

5:07Stephen Morris:right on the tip of my tongue it is uh steven just run me real quick through when you had like your first real financial awakening it's so weird to do with you like talking to yourself but um but no it's a very interesting question and i always loved when you do it to random people but kind asking me it kind of sucks um because mine is kind of sad um my financial awakening came when i was like seven eight years old um and just my parents were in the um and i don't think i'm talking bad about my parents i have amazing parents um but during that time they weren't the most uh frugal if you want to say and just massive amounts of credit card debt um just living way outside of their means um and i got to experience firsthand what that felt like um and from a little kid like that was pretty pretty not good so i didn't even have my first credit card until i was 32 yeah and that was a government credit credit card but it still went on my credit report but it was a government credit travel card so i didn't even have a choice in the matter like i had to have it and so um that was my yeah a company credit card or a government travel card it was my very first credit card so um i've avoided debt like the plague most in my life um and i still do quite a bit to this day but um that taught me pretty early on like don't be stupid because stupid hurts really really bad yeah that definitely makes sense

7:00Evan Raidt:obviously it's a lot earlier than than a lot of people for better or for worse are introduced to those kinds of concepts and frankly that kind of financial trauma and what that what that feels like but how do you think that first off the obvious question how do you think that impacted your long-term financial view but i'm also specifically interested in how do you think you viewed that financial trauma at the time versus how you view it looking back on it now with a completely different lens so um my parents like they did a very good job like i didn't have like food scarcity fear or anything like that um they they did a very good job making sure i was taking

7:41Stephen Morris:care of uh needs not necessarily wants um so i i guess i never even really looked at it as trauma i just looked at it as just a valuable lesson that i i got to observe that i didn't you know have to make the mistake to see it um i guess now like knowing like childhood trauma stuff like that all the research that's been done sure i guess it affected me quite a bit but um as far as like investing and things like that whenever i got into the military and one of my favorite stories to tell is i re-enlisted in the army in like 2008 ish and i got a huge uh bonus and it was like 20 grand or 40 i don't remember exactly but it was like 20 grand ish and um i was deployed at the time so it was tax-free so that 20 grand or whatever it was hit my bank account lump sum holy and And that same year or around that time, Tesla IPO.

8:58Stephen Morris:And so imagine if I had taken all that money and just dumped it into Tesla. Right. And so, but I wasn't that smart. Like, and that, like, I, like I was telling my wife, it's like, you know, Katya, like Evan pisses me off. And she, she was like, why? I was like, he's like 24. and he knows all this whatever he is so far ahead of me where I was when I was his age it's not fair it's not cool I wish I was that wise but no it's one good on you I'm so proud of you that you are where you are and I know it's been a ton of work on your end but yeah that wasn't me when I was 27 I promise you that um and so you know i i didn't really start even caring about investing until i got into into the real world because i mean in the military like you don't have bills like like i have my cell phone and internet and i think that was my only bill like or my only two bills um uh you know i i to this day i still drive the jeep i bought brand new when i turned 18 um it's a 2001 jeep wrangler sport um sitting in my driveway now um so i mean just things like that like i i'm very much one that will do without unless i absolutely need it um i can wear a like you've seen my hoodies like i wear them until they fall apart man like i don't care um i find what i like i stick with it and so i'm pretty sure like that whole mentality of i don't need it i'm not gonna buy it comes from all that um definitely early on in my younger years though the the the uh i don't know how to say this the uh uh if i made it i spit and i didn't care about saving anything so yeah i'd say my second financial awakening awakening came about when i was about 37 and i realized like i need i need to do something better than what what i've been doing and uh so then i got into dave ramsey not my thing um while i agree like for a lot of people debt is really bad just because they don't have the discipline for it um and i know you like you you talk and try to guide people through the proper way to use a credit card which is great if if you have the discipline for all that good on you man but i think also you need to have the self-awareness to know am i disciplined because if i if i'm not disciplined at all then i'm just going to dig myself in a hole that i can't get out of then i'm going to have to file bankruptcy then i'm not going to be able to find a place to live for you know and it's just this snowball of of not good and so while i don't entirely agree with dave ramsey like i don't know and again no shade at him and what he does he does great things he saves i mean he's probably saved people's lives with some of the his teachings i it's hard telling but um i'm it's like fear-mongering almost to me and i don't i don't like that um so i do i do have company credit cards now i still don't have a personal credit card um but i do have company credit cards that i use for that stuff and um you know i'm not scared of going into debt if it's like you say smart you know if i'm gonna buy a house um don't really like going in debt to buy a car um but my wife has expensive taste so

12:59Stephen Morris:but i mean this is what's most important yeah and i mean and i think you know in one of your episodes you said something that really stuck with me and that was uh you know what what's the point if you're miserable and so i was like man you know you know i you could be dry i love my jeep so i'm not miserable but if it was you know i've also taken very good care of it and if it was just a rundown beater that i was always having trouble with making my life hard making my life miserable yeah no that wouldn't be worth not going into debt like the the cost of my happiness definitely isn't worth that and i really appreciated that message from you um so yeah i guess i'm still having my financial awakening which i guess is kind of embarrassing to admit seeing how I'm 40 and you're like 22.

13:54Stephen Morris:So.

13:55Evan Raidt:We'll round. We'll round. I don't think there's anything wrong with that whatsoever. Of course, inarguably, it would always be better to start earlier than later. Of course, that always the math is going to work out that way. But I think that if we really looked at the numbers of how many people never have that awakening or have that awakening, you know, all the way in retirement when they're, when they try to retire and realize they can't, or they're retired for two years and have to go back to work that happens to a ton, a ton of people. And so having an awakening 20 years before retirement is still way, way ahead of what happens to a lot of other people.

14:31Evan Raidt:But I want to go back to what I think is the most obvious question based on everything you just said, which is, where do you think the stigma against Jeeps comes from? I've never had one, but I hear horrible things about Jeeps and their upkeep and never being able to stay on the road from practically everybody that I know.

14:50Stephen Morris:You need better friends then. What? Like, my, dude.

14:59Evan Raidt:Can't argue with that.

15:01Stephen Morris:I've had to, I had to put a transmission in my Jeep and that was just because I was young and stupid. Um, I had to put a water pump in my Jeep. That sucked.

15:15Stephen Morris:Other than that. And that's it? Other than just basic maintenance.

15:20Evan Raidt:Mm-hmm.

15:20Stephen Morris:no my jeep's mine man it's traveled the world well it's all data points i guess i got a good data point now so i like positive data points now i will say like the the the uh the newer jeeps so the jeeps around 2005 2006 they switched engines from the inline six which is a gas guzzling machine it's a bulletproof engine but it drinks some gas to a more economic v6 and that engine just sucks um so i mean maybe that's the jeeps you're hearing that suck because i agree those aren't the best but um i don't know my jeep my jeep's bulletproof man well next time somebody

16:04Evan Raidt:complains about i'm gonna ask was it a v6 or an inline six and that'll probably give me my answer and give me more data for my data points and i'll have to keep that in a spreadsheet since you know me but anyways back to the back to financial topics um because of this financial history and the more or less, we'll say, later start that you got in finance and focusing on finance and trying to take greater strides. How do you think that impacts the kinds of financial values and investing values that you want to bring to the Investing for Beginners podcast? So, I mean, you've heard my tick, I guess we could call it.

16:46Stephen Morris:And that is one of the things I hate more than anything in this world are bullies. I don't like bullies. And to me, the, the, the wall street is just, to me, it's just a giant bully. They make all these terms, super complex. They make all these data points seem super complex. But when you get down to the nuts and bolts and you understand what a put in the call are then or an option or whatever you're you're looking at is not that complicated and that that's that's what my passion behind this whole thing is that i want here i'll explain it this way part of the reason i got such a late start on like investing in things is that my dad doesn't understand wall street right so he while he did teach me the finer points of budgeting you know balancing your bank account things like that he never taught me about compound interest wall street stuff like that and so um to him the stock market is the same as las vegas and so it wasn't until my adulthood when i started researching learning myself that i realized like that is the furthest thing from the truth but i still feel like that stigma is very very present in a lot of americans minds today that you might as well take your money go buy a powerball ticket or go to vegas and play some craps or whatever and you're just as likely to win and that that's that is so far from the freaking truth and the reason people think that is just because you know wall street you know the people the powers that be make it seem way more complicated than it is and it is my lifelong goal to crush that and get as many americans as i can understand that they can be wealthy they may not be you know uh elon wealthy or gates wealthy or or bezos wealthy but they they can by all stretches of the measure be wealthy and have a good life.

19:05Evan Raidt:Is your wardrobe well stocked for the upcoming season change? I'm recording and it's the first warm day we've had in a while and I'm realizing my wardrobe isn't as robust as it should be. So I went to Quince and got myself a three pack of 100 % Pima cotton teas. I can't wait to report back to you about how those feel. What does, you know, kind of the realm of, it doesn't have to be specifically for financial freedom, but what does that kind of a life look for you? You don't have to give a number or anything but what does that kind of life and those why's look like for you i wouldn't make

22:11Stephen Morris:an austin powers joke but i'm going to guess that you've never seen it never just never seen austin powers and that's probably going to piss off a lot of people but i can't change the history one million dollars i've only seen that meme yeah i'm sure you have but you got to watch the movies man they're great there's too many if i watched every movie every time somebody said oh you need to watch blank i'd never be able to watch anything else whatever anyway um i just hear excuses now but uh no wealth to me is freedom wealth is not a specific number it is you know steven and katya want to go do this so they go do that or i don't want to work for six months so i don't work for six months or whatever the case may be it's i can come and go as i please that's that's the main reason i i became an entrepreneur is i wrongfully thought that that would give me a total control of my schedule um that was a very very bad misconception on my part a bit off yeah a pit but but i do love what i do and so you know if you love what you do you never work a day in your life so um that that's what wealth is to me it's it's freedom it's security it's it's i can just go do what i want when i want and not have to worry about you know am i going to be able to pay my mortgage this month is my wife going to have to do without does she feel financially secure um i guess that's probably the the most important thing is does she feel financially secure um and is she comfortable and as long as the answer to that is yes then i consider myself

24:09Evan Raidt:willing yeah that's beautiful i think that's one of the aspects that people it's so easy to miss is you say, okay, what does a perfect life look like for you financially? And instantly people think of just jetting off anywhere and buying luxury cars and luxury houses and having multiple houses and always having the newest phone. We just always think of these materialistic things that, while that would be fun and cool and whatever it is, that wouldn't bring nearly as much meaning to your life as just core happiness, quote unquote, plain, basic happiness. and including people around you in that happiness.

24:48Evan Raidt:I think that's the most beautiful version of it.

24:51Stephen Morris:Yeah, absolutely. And to the people that think that owning multiple houses is fun, it's not.

25:02Evan Raidt:So check that off the wise. We don't need that one.

25:05Stephen Morris:It sucks. At least I don't, I guess I'm not wealthy enough to hire somebody, but to manage it for me. but um it's it's not worth it in my opinion um my wife and i are going to be moving to north carolina and then uh you know then we'll just have one place and i'll be happy heck yeah heck

25:30Evan Raidt:yeah so i got one last one last question for you what do you what lately i guess lately could be you know within the last five years or something like that what financial or investing related habit or you know um focus have you changed that's been the biggest needle mover for you if anything comes to mind hmm so that's interesting because andrew and i just recorded the 10

Read the full transcript

25:55Stephen Morris:unsexy truths about long-term investing no one ever talks about um and so the audience has already heard me say this so i'm sorry um but i'm gonna repeat it just in case that you know you listen to evan and not the other uh the other show and that is it's okay it's okay like you said i didn't start investing till i was in my late 30s it's okay you know could i could the compound be greater absolutely but oh well it's okay you know i bought i bought of stock today and it dropped 30 that sucks but it's okay as long as you did you do diligence in your research and your thesis is sound it'll come back it's okay um that that's the biggest biggest lesson that i've learned from you guys is just just to be chill and that's why i love long-term investing so much is because it's just so so much chiller than everything else and people think like day trading is sexy and swing trading and all that stuff it's not it's so stressful man like it is nothing but a bucket of stress and i don't want to be stressed out about my investments i just want to chill so that that's the biggest lesson i've learned that that has moved the needle for me is just relax it's okay we've done our research we know what we're talking about um andrew is not stupid and you know we're gonna be okay i think that's beautiful

27:36Evan Raidt:and it's a lot harder to implement than it sounds but it it seems to me at least from my point of view like you've done a very good job of taking that in you know wholeheartedly and and really living living that way it took me about a year because there there was a time when we had bought

27:53Stephen Morris:of stock and it instantly dropped and i was like calling dave calling andrew like it's it's dropping it's tanking we got abandoned ship like and they're both like it's fine dude it's an insurance company it's not going anywhere promise like it'll be okay and like that that was just the biggest lesson man is just relax you know and if you're listening to this you know you're like i would love to to pick stocks but i just i don't have the discipline or i don't have the time or whatever it's okay just buy an etf you talk about them all the time it's okay you want to hire a personal uh uh advisor wealth a wealth manager fine if you got the money it's okay like there is no and that's the most beautiful part of this whole thing is there is no real as long as you do your research due diligence there's no right or wrong to this and you know all we got to do is follow the framework that Warren Buffett laid out for us and we'll be fine.

29:13Stephen Morris:Okay. Yeah.

29:14Evan Raidt:There's, there's more than a million ways to, to whether you want to say get wealthy or achieve your financial goals or just have a stable financial life. There's more than a million ways to get there and it doesn't have to be exciting or flashy or complicated or time consuming, or it does also doesn't have to be basic or easy. It doesn't have to be anything. There's, there's so many ways to get there and just being self-aware and figuring out what works for you is the best thing, best possible thing that you can do. But actually, I know I said the other thing was the last thing, but I'd be remiss if I didn't ask you, ask you about your investing history, because I know you have a bit of a different investing history than, than you've sort of landed on at this point.

29:51Evan Raidt:But would you kind of want to touch on what your investing history was like, what you used to do and focus on and kind of how you landed where you've landed now?

30:00Stephen Morris:Yeah. um so i cover it a lot in uh the first episode i did with andrew i believe the episode title's called uh why i quit swing trading um but yeah so initially you know i got out of the military and uh you know i was in my 30s i'm like i don't know what to do with my life now so i just got a job and i hated that and so i'm like man i want something that matters i want something that is mine and so i i just got on youtube and i saw this guy day trading and he was making bank i'm like i can do that and so i started doing it and i wasn't bad like i did okay it's just it was so stressful and it is not just like you get man i saw this influencer the other day i won't say his name i wanted to choke him because he's like this is the day in the life of me as a day trader oh man he goes to his computer it does work for like three hours was it on the high-rise apartment yeah and i'm like i don't know what you day trading in bro but i don't know any days like it's it's 11 hours minimum you know because you got to do your prep before the start or the bell rings then you gotta do all your aar you know your after action review aar you gotta do all your after action review stuff at the end of the day and like it's it's a long freaking day dude it is not easy and so um i started doing that and i was like this this sucks like i don't want to do this i got introduced to swing trading which is kind of like it's a lot more like day trading than it is long-term investing but in swing trading if you hold a stock for for a week it's okay it's not ideal but you know you're typically aiming for like three days turnaround um but it's not near as stressful and time consuming and so um um i i guess like it's more passive is a good way to put it anyway so i started doing that and i'm like you know around that time i started my own uh consulting company to uh consult companies on b2b uh business to business where i i could consult and help uh develop leadership programs for for other companies and stuff um given my military background it's like you know pretty easy for me and stuff so um i did that for a while that's how i met andrew uh and then andrew hired me uh to consult uh say the research um and so i started and then just you know got introduced to you guys and things just kind of hit it off and yeah i got that's how i got introduced to long term investing and i thought it was crazy at first like why would i want to wait 10 years to make but um but no i i believe i truly believe it is the best way to grow sustainable wealth and so um and and it's funny too because like the more disciplined you get in like because you know in order to invest you have to have money in order to have money you have to budget in order to budget you have to live a specific way and so the more you do that the more money i don't know it just seems like your money just starts to grow somehow and i don't know if it's just i become stingier or what um it's been a very lucrative uh fruitful endeavor and i've i've loved every

33:55Evan Raidt:single second of it yeah that that's that's a beautiful beautiful story and i especially love you know you mentioned that it's sustainable it's a sustainable way to go about things because swing trading absolutely can and has and does make people rich it goes very very well for people and people make a ton of money it's it's going to happen um but how sustainable it is how close it is to guaranteed nothing is guaranteed but how close it is to guaranteed or or something that you can actually rely on and live off of and not have to absolutely ruin the rest of your life in terms of time and effort and stress to to get there in the first place it and for the average person it's just much more sustainable and realistic for and for their for their whole life to focus on long-term investing, whether that's an ETF, whether that's the kind of long-term value investing that Andrew and you now are focusing on, that's a much more realistic way for people to go about things.

34:49Evan Raidt:And the growth, like you said, even though at first it feels like there's absolutely nothing, when you look at that compounding chart, you just got to wait until you start getting on the up and up and then things are going to start growing regardless of what the heck you do and regardless of how much you put in.

35:02Stephen Morris:Absolutely. And you were talking, there's more than one way to go about doing this. We don't talk about gold and silver and all that stuff, but that is a valid way to earn money. And people talk about it. We don't talk about bonds or all that stuff, but just because we don't talk about it is not our thing. It doesn't mean it's not good. It doesn't mean it doesn't make people money. It certainly does. and so i mean if we actually had a comment on spotify this morning that i responded to he's asking why we never talk about it and it's you know that exact same answer like hey it's a great a great way to make money if that's your thing love it for you bro but it's just not what we do and that's perfectly fine so um just go just get started man i don't care if it's five dollars like there there are plenty of apps where you can that will accept a five dollar uh deposit or not app uh what's the word i'm looking for brokerage that will accept five dollars and just buy a stock anything doesn't matter buy apple buy google doesn't matter just buy something and i promise that just the more you do it is going to start clicking and the more it starts clicking And like, then now we're cooking with Crisco, as they say.

36:32Evan Raidt:You just got to take that step and change that mental shift of who you are. And now at that point, you're an investor. At that point, you own a stock. You've signed up for a brokerage. You probably have the app on your phone. And that's you now. And all it takes is that one shift. And that can lead to a crazy, crazy financial future that you would not have had access to otherwise. So that's a beautiful, beautiful message. Awesome. Well, I really appreciate it.

36:56Stephen Morris:Before we go, what was the first stock you ever bought?

37:00Evan Raidt:For me, it was GameStop because it was after everything had gone crazy. And it was just, I don't know. It was related to my mentor at the time who was just teaching me what the heck investing was. And everything had seen crazy, crazy gains on GameStop. Long story short, he thought it would keep going. And so it dropped by like half or less than, or did he lose everything? he lost at least a lot of what his gains would have been his unrealized gains. Um, but that was all through GameStop. And so for the heck of it, the first stock I bought was GameStop and, uh, that continued to turn into nothing past that point.

37:38Yeah,

37:39Stephen Morris:I did,

37:41Evan Raidt:but it was something that got me here. That's all that matters.

37:44Stephen Morris:That's all that matters. Now I own VOO,

37:46Evan Raidt:but not quite GameStop.

37:49Stephen Morris:There you go. It's that, but you know, I, I was telling my wife, you just got to buy that first stock like that and that's why i ask because i don't think you

38:01Evan Raidt:ever forget your first my first was houston oil oh and i'll never forget it like i lost everything i put in my brokerage account and that's okay yeah but just buying that first

38:19Stephen Morris:stock man like i'm telling you once that was done all the fear all the anxiety around it

38:26Evan Raidt:yeah prior to that i didn't you don't even know what the buttons on a brokerage you know account do or what they mean or anything until you actually go through and put 10 bucks in there and suddenly oh well i own a stock now okay that's that's how that process works and that's what that means and now i can look at it and you know all that exactly that's all the start of a process yep just take the step and it'll turn into a massive massive leap but i really appreciate steven fantastic talking to you as always i know i've talked to you a million times but on this fantastic to talk to you um and if anybody and if anybody wants to contact either of us my email as always is evan at einvestingforbeginners.com and i just realized maybe i should spell that with how many times people have screwed up my name over email so evan at einvestingforbeginners.com and then also feel free to email Stephen at stephensteven at einvestingforbeginners.com.
