2:58Ben Meiselas:What has Obama been highlighting as Donald Trump is flailing, as Donald Trump is cognitively and physically deteriorating before our eyes, ranting and raving like a lunatic about Obama, Obama, Obama. Former President Obama's big highlight from the opening of his presidential library was this line right here, quote, a belief that our military and law enforcement owe allegiance not to any president or political party, but to the people and our constitution, signed President Obama. This is a warning. This is a message to our military saying, we know that Donald Trump, the dictator, the authoritarian, the failed dictator and authoritarian is going to try to entrench himself into power forever.

3:50Ben Meiselas:Why else is he building himself golden in ballrooms and doing what he's doing to the White House in D.C. And Obama is reminding everybody that this opening of the presidential library is not just about the library. It is a rallying call about the fight that we all are going to have to make over the next two years to ensure that we save, protect, defend our democracy. We've done a good job holding the line, but Obama is calling on us, I believe, to do something more profound in holding the line in the future in response to this authoritarian regime. He also posts the following. The exhibits focus not just on policies, but on the shared values that make democracy possible.

4:33Ben Meiselas:A belief in the intrinsic dignity and worth of all people and that no one is above the law or beneath its protection. A belief in checks and balances in our government and an accountability that comes with an independent judiciary and a robust free press. Powerful words indeed right there. And again, we focused a lot on Obama's speech, but how about what Obama was saying afterwards in the interview with NBC? It was powerful words. Here's what he was saying about this moment that we are going through right now, this period of disruption and polarization, but how fundamentally our country is not Trump.

5:12Ben Meiselas:Our country is made up of actually good people. Donald Trump is dividing us. This is a rallying call, folks. Here, play this clip. There's no doubt that we are going through a period right now of disruption, polarization. That's caused, I think, people to feel as if our democracy, our civic habits and virtues, our shared understanding of how we treat each other has started to crumble. On the other hand, when I travel across the country today, not just when I was president, you still see that sense of decency with people. You still see folks helping each other and looking out for their neighbors.

5:54Ben Meiselas:And then what former President Obama talks about are the letters that he received and how this is not a monument to himself. This is a living, breathing presidential presidential library that's also focused on unifying the people. Listen to what he says here. I used to tell my staff, you run elections and get elected, but the end point is, are you delivering something to make the lives of folks a little bit better who sent you? And those letters reminded me of that. Some of my favorite letters were from Republicans who would say, I didn't vote for you. I don't agree with anything you're doing.

6:36but you seem like a good dad and i appreciate that yeah and what that video that you just showed me uh speaks to i i hope when people come here they're not just fixated on some speech i'm given not just fixated on michelle's dresses more than anything as you've seen in these exhibits you'll hear the voices of the American people. And that, I think, will give you encouragement. That makes you feel that the idea of America as a multiracial, multiethnic, multireligious, raucous, noisy democracy, that that can work. I think their voices are what makes you feel confident in the future.

7:29Ben Meiselas:And here's what he talks about moving the country forward. Let's play this. But I really am hoping that it's less an act of nostalgia and that it's more an inspiration for us moving forward to get a sense of, all right, this was a small chapter in America's ongoing journey to perfect his union. He also mentioned, of course, how Donald Trump got us involved in this catastrophic and unlawful war. And ultimately, this so-called memorandum of understanding puts us in a worse place than the JCPOA that former President Obama negotiated. Let's play this clip. What do you make of what we know about the deal so far?

8:12I am very happy to see a ceasefire, and I'm hopeful that it holds. But in terms of what was the original rationale for this war, which was there was a deal in place in which Iran had agreed not to develop nuclear weapons. This administration or prior version of this administration pulled out of it, which caused then Iran to develop more nuclear capacity. We've now fought a war, spent billions and billions of dollars, put enormous strain on our military. A lot of people have died. And it feels like we're back where we were before we started the war, except maybe a little bit worse.

9:01Ben Meiselas:And what I like also is that as part of this rollout of the presidential library, all the people who Donald Trump seeds over, all the people who Donald Trump is so jealous and hate. They all gave interviews around the opening of this library. And you know Obama was instrumental in helping to coordinate this, to call out Donald Trump, to put the dagger in Donald Trump. So you have Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the House, talk about how Obama's deal with Iran was a masterpiece in diplomacy. Here, play this clip. Obama. Well, I think it relates to his own failures. You have to understand, well, you do understand, but the public should understand that the Obama nuclear agreement with Iran was a masterpiece of diplomacy.

9:51To remember that we brought in all the countries, the EU, G20, countries all over the world, including Russia and China. Russia and China. 12:23Ben Meiselas:And just remember what Donald Trump was saying at the G7. You know, you know, the Iranians, they laughed at Obama and they said he's a stupid son of a bitch. Do you see the contrast, though, that's being highlighted right now before these midterms between dignity and strength and what America's values are really about in this Trump trash, this Trump cesspool? Here, listen to what Trump said, just so you can see for yourself. Like, oh my, look at this money he's giving us. He tried to bribe his way out. I didn't do that. They're just incredible role models and their values are American values. And we need to revive those and provide hope to everybody. 16:23Yeah. Attack on one's, attack on all. What happened to 9-11? Who's the first guys that came to NATO? Right.

16:30Ben Meiselas:And do you remember the grifter, the fraudster? We know he is right now. But Donald Trump from 2011, when he would say, Obama's going to start a war with Iran because he can't do deals and he's weak and ineffective. Here play this clip. Our president will start a war with Iran. because he has absolutely no ability to negotiate. He's weak and he's ineffective. So the only way he figures that he's going to get reelected and as sure as you're sitting there is to start a war with Iran. Now, I'm more militant and more militaristic than the president. I believe in strength. But to start a war in order to get elected, and I believe that's going to happen, would be an out.

17:15Ben Meiselas:And then I like that the Obama Foundation released this video of former President Obama putting on a Presidential Medal of Honor on NBA players, but showing that he can do it pretty easily. Remember how much Donald Trump struggled to do the Congressional Medal of Honor? It was so humiliating. But here's Obama play this clip.
