In short

MAGA Republicans and outside White House advisors fear Donald Trump’s Iran war posture and high gas prices will damage GOP chances in the November midterms; the episode also attacks GOP messaging, convention plans, and Trump’s claims about oil, Venezuela, and Strait of Hormuz.

Guests/backgrounds

No named guests appear; the episode cites “top White House outside advisors” speaking anonymously to Bloomberg, plus quoted figures like RNC chair Joe Gruters, Sen. Susan Collins (as referenced), and Texas candidates/figures James Tallarico and Ken Paxton.

Key claims

Advisors expect the Iran war and gas prices won’t improve before November; they say the White House has damaged credibility after Trump claimed Hormuz is open and gas prices are falling. The episode alleges GOP voters are demoralized and that Trump’s actions (including beef imports and market manipulation) are hurting ranchers and consumers.

Notable examples

Michigan ranchers calling for resignation/25th Amendment; discounted frozen beef imports (300,000 metric tons); Trump “Lake America” renaming; Tallarico ad attacking Paxton’s corruption; Dr. Abdul El-Sayed blaming war spending for $40T debt.

0:00Ben Meiselas:MAGA Republicans are in panic mode right now as their voters are just done with Donald Trump. I mean, you have ranchers in Michigan who are saying things like this. Let's play this clip. Well, he needs to resign because that's the bottom line and get somebody in there and know what to help. Yeah. And the latest reporting from Bloomberg, you got MAGA Republicans seeing Trump's unceasing Iran war is what they call it. unceasing Iran war as a midterm threat, you think? And it cites top White House advisors. These are the top White House outside advisors who spoke on conditions of anonymity to Bloomberg.

0:38Ben Meiselas:And here's what they are saying. Republican strategists worry there's no way to keep the Iran war from hurting the party's prospects in November's midterm elections. The continuing hostilities have demoralized GOP voters who sent Trump to the White House in order to tame inflation and keep the U.S. out of overseas conflicts. Compounding Republican fears is Donald Trump's apparent lack of concern. Then it says over here how several outside advisors to the White House, I mean, these are people who are currently hired to advise the White House in an outside capacity, granted anonymity to speak candidly, said they do not expect the war to be resolved or gas prices to go down before November.

1:24Ben Meiselas:They also worry that the White House has damaged its credibility on Iran after Trump's repeated claims that the Strait of Hormuz is open to ship traffic and that gas prices are falling. What do you mean? I thought that everybody believed Barack Ravid over at Axios that the United States is powerfully in dominating the Strait of Hormuz because Donald Trump and Pete Hegsitt said, oh wait, nobody's buying that. Also, nobody's buying that Donald Trump's claim that he just did the biggest deal ever with Venezuela and the US has conquered it and it's taken over 65 billion barrels of oil, provable reserves underneath Venezuela.

2:07Ben Meiselas:That's gonna solve the oil crisis right now. No one buys any of this crap. Treasury Secretary Besant's market manipulation crap nobody's buying. People know what their gas prices are. Gas prices are surging to record highs. They're at record highs. Diesel is at record highs right now. Donald Trump's screwing over our ranchers. You heard from that rancher over there in Michigan. These were ranchers who were at a beef show in Michigan who said, these are people who voted for Trump. They're like, resign. 25th Amendment, please. Get the hell out of here. Ranchers are outraged over Trump's move to flood the market with 300 ,000 metric tons of discounted frozen beef from overseas.

2:53Ben Meiselas:Make America great again. And then you have the head of the RNC, Chairman Joe Grutters. I mean, look at this pathetic loser. He does the American flag face thing. He's all, we just have to be meaner to these people. I mean, these people are a bunch of losers and we need to stop normalizing these individuals and act like they know what the hell they're doing. This is the chair of the RNC, Joe Gruters. And he's like, we're two weeks away from Trumpapalooza, everybody in Dallas, everybody be there. December 9th and December 10th, it's going to be a rockin' in Dallas, everybody. Okay. First off, it conflicts with the NFL, number one.

3:33Ben Meiselas:Number two, nobody wants to go to the midterm convention and be on stage with Donald Trump. He is poison right now to this country. He wants to make it all about himself where he's going to say affordability. It's a hoax. I've never heard of that word. It's a new word that they must have invented. No Republicans want to be on stage with this guy, but you know, and then on the September 11th, 25th anniversary, Trump's refusing to show up to Manhattan because they're not allowing him to do a speech because he wants to do like a political propaganda speech on 9-11. So he's like, I'm not going. So you're going to have partying the day before the 25th anniversary of 9-11.

4:16Ben Meiselas:Joe Gruder seems to think that's a good idea. Here's what he had to say. Play this clip. Joe Gruder's Republican National Committee chairman here, here outside the America Airlines Center, where in just two weeks, we're going to have the biggest midterm convention in the history of the party. You can join us. Go to GOPConvention.com. Get your tickets. It's going to be awesome. It's going to be a Trumpapalooza. We're going to hear from the president, the vice president, and 109 different speakers. Make sure you get your tickets and let's go. Checking in with MAGA Mike Johnson. Hey, MAGA Mike, what do you think about all of this here?

4:52Ben Meiselas:MAGA Mike Johnson gave an interview just now over B-roll of Trump. And MAGA Mike's like, It's not unlawful for crazy people to run for office. That's happened throughout the history of our country. Never at this level. Like their whole campaign is like, the Democrats are crazy and we need to stop the crazy people. Uh, hello. We've seen what y 'all been doing for the past two years. You're weird. You're crazy. You're dangerous. You're war criminals. You cover up child sex trafficking. I mean, you cover up the Epstein files. Y 'all have caused so much pain and have behaved like such lunatics. It is outrageous.

5:33Ben Meiselas:And then you're like, well, they're the crazy ones. Let's play this, Clint. But you're getting to an important point there. You know, as a constitutional law attorney, I mean, we've been thinking about this, researching it. Again, not a lot of precedent on this. I mean, it's not unlawful for crazy people to run for office. That's happened throughout the history of our country. Never at this level. And never a number of people who are so determined to rip the Constitution in half. i mean listen all right speaking of who the crazy ones are have you seen this let's zoom in on texas right here let's take a look at some of these maga republican candidates shall we so this is ken paxton right here his team posted this they think this makes him look good the future of our state and the future rides future of our country rides on this race here play this clip but the future of our state and the future of our country rides on this race.

6:24So I'm out fighting.

6:26Ben Meiselas:Okay, let's check in and see what's going on with MAGA Republican Senator from Maine, Senator Collins, who tries to pretend that she's a centrist. And she's like, I'm so disappointed that Donald Trump has destroyed the livelihoods of the lobster men in Maine and destroyed our hospitality industry and destroyed the lives of people in Maine. I'm so utterly disappointed. Watch me take a champagne bottle and slam it into the hole of the bottle. Watch what happens here. The video speaks for itself. Here play this clip.

7:20Ben Meiselas:And so let's take a look at the energy though, at the James Tallarico huge crowd in the Rio Grand Valley, let's play this clip.

7:35Ben Meiselas:And I will share with you, let's take a look at, let's check in right here, so much energy with Ken Paxton, let's play it.

7:55Ben Meiselas:and then they did a bizarre outdoor prayer thing with ken paxton let's play it your blessings be upon him you brought him on this amazing journey and lord god you got so much to store in him but lord god you pick our own and now i want to share with you james tolerico because we should highlight what the contrast looks like as these MAGA Republicans are flailing and as the insiders and the Trump advisors are like, we are screwed. We're likely going to lose both the House and the Senate. Let's play this clip of Tallarico. I am running for LBJ's Senate seat. And like and like Lyndon Johnson, I was a public school teacher before I ran for office.

8:42In office, LBJ made the largest investment in America's children and families that this country has ever seen. Head Start, Title I, Medicare, Medicaid, Public Television, the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act. When we win back LBJ's Senate seat, we can pass an LBJ-sized investment in America's couple of students.

9:14We can give every Texas teacher a long overdue pay raise.

9:23We can pass universal child care and paid family leave so no one has to choose between raising a family and earning a living. We can expand the child tax credit and make it permanent And so no child in the wealthiest nation on earth is growing up in poverty. We can do that when we win LBJ Senate seats. We can slash the red tape that is preventing us from building millions of new homes. And we can provide assistance to first-time homebuyers so that every American has a place they can call home. and we can fight tooth and nail against any and all attacks on medicare and we can force the wealthiest in this country to pay their fair share into social security so we can all afford

10:14Ben Meiselas:to retire with dignity but all donald trump was saying on friday is he's freaky freaky freaky He's Tala Freako. That's all these MAGAs have. They're losers. They name go, he's Tala Freaky, everybody. Okay, well, you want to talk about, you want to talk about the freaky? You want to talk about real sick shit? Excuse my language. Look in a freaking mirror, man, and look at all of the people who are surrounding you. It's like the weirdest, strangest group, but it's all projection with this crowd. That's all they've got. And you know what? The bottom line too, They have made the United States look like such losers on the world stage.

10:55Ben Meiselas:That's one of the things that I don't think no matter what your political party, you can ever forgive about these Republicans. They made us all look like the biggest losers ever. And we should never have gotten into these catastrophic and unlawful wars, the war crimes, all of the horrific conduct. I mean, the attacks on our greatest ally, Canada, the attacks on NATO, all of this behavior. I think it's also worth reflecting on as Canada knows, as Iran knows, as they know, as they know, these people are losers leading the country. Here's Trump like Talafrico play this clip. Thank you. So I'll be going to Texas and we're working very hard.

11:34We want to win that race. He's running against a man who should not never be. We have a very good candidate, Ken Paxton, and he's running against Telefrico, they call him, because he is a little freaky. And that's not a man that represents the value of Texas. So I'm going to help Ken Paxton and I'm going to spend a lot of time in Texas.

11:56Ben Meiselas:Show you this brilliant new ad from James Tolerico torching Ken Paxton. Brilliant stuff right here. Let's play it. Ken Paxton is the most corrupt politician in Texas. Since taking office, Ken Paxton's net worth has increased 7 ,000%. He now owns 15 homes. While most Texans can't afford one, Ken Paxton was impeached by his own party for taking bribes from wealthy donors while blocking overtime pay for Texas workers and gutting our health care. We cannot afford Ken Paxton's corruption. I'm James Tallarico, and I approve this message. Now let's check in on Dr. Abdul El-Sayed. Here's what he had to say.

12:38Ben Meiselas:Again, absolutely brilliant. U.S. national debt just hit$40 trillion. Stop. Let's talk about this for a minute. You know what Republicans are going to tell you. They're going to tell you we have a national debt of$40 trillion. We can't passively pay for Medicare for all or universal childcare or anything else for that matter. We got to cut it all. But it might be worth trying to figure out why our national debt just got so big. They cut taxes on the richest people because at the end of the day, a debt balance is about the amount of money in and the amount of money out. Republicans always like to do one thing with our money.

13:10They don't want to give you healthcare. They don't want to give you childcare. They don't want to address our broken infrastructure or our failing public schools. You know what they want to do? They want to go to war. And Donald Trump came to power saying this. Under Trump, we will have no more wars. No more wars. No more wars. And then he did this. The United States military began major combat operations in Iran. Billions of your taxpayer dollars being spent, wasted in a war he doesn't know how to get out of. So now we've got$40 trillion in debt. And yeah, we got to do something about it. So here's my plan.

13:46I think billionaires should pay their fair share. We should tax billionaires their wealth and the loopholes that big corporations use to get out of paying their taxes. We should close them. And then you should do stop going to dumb ass wars.

14:05Ben Meiselas:Okay. So MAGA Republicans who are advising Donald Trump are very nervous. What would you be nervous about. I don't know. Trump posting yesterday, Lake America protected by Donald ducks. Oh, very, uh, this is what the American people want to see. It's not even funny. These are real people's lives, man. Your tariffs and your trade war against Canada is part of the factors that have increased costs so much on people. No, this isn't funny. People don't do 21 ,000 stock trades like you do and manipulate markets and they don't get to do quid pro quos with the UAE. And now we know one of the leaders of the UAE has an additional 49 % stake of the World Liberty Financial Bank, which just got an exemption.

14:51Ben Meiselas:So you can now operate as a bank. That's in addition to the hundreds of millions of dollars that were given by the UAE to the Trump company, in addition to the crypto, in addition to all. Most people right now really can't even afford groceries and they've had their healthcare ripped away. And you do crap like Lake America protected by Donald Duck. It's not funny. It's not funny. And Canada's our ally. This behavior is just sick. Here, play this clip.

15:23Ben Meiselas:And he's just been on a tear. This is what he's posting. The next one was AI Trump replacing Lake Ontario sign with Lake America. Then he dances to the YMCA. Oh, he's so outrageous. what a crazy guy let's forget that he's a war criminal and he's aiding and abetting genocide and he slaughtered little girls in Iran and he lost the catastrophic war in the Strait of Hormuz's clothes and oil and diesel and gas is at record highs right now and that he screwed up everything and his trade war against the world backfired and he didn't end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours like he promised and he lies about oh well let's just forget because he's doing crazy stuff look at him he's doing YMCA dances so freaking pathetic Here, let's play this clip right here.

16:18Ben Meiselas:Yeah, and then as I reported yesterday morning, House GOPers in private meeting are continuing to say, Trump is exhausting our voters. We're not helping ourselves today when we decide to rename Lake Ontario, Lake America. Bulwark got the scoop at Oklahoma State University where a MAGA Republican Congresswoman, Stephanie Bice, she was speaking with a group of students and others at the university. And she said, the challenge that we have is that we have to get over the narrative that I don't like this guy. So I'm going to vote for the Democrat because I'm telling you right now, I'm hearing it already.

16:56Ben Meiselas:And what happens is this will have an impact on me because two things will either happen. They're going to vote for the Democrat and they may split the ticket and vote for me and a few others. Or this is my bigger fear right now. People don't go to vote. That's what they're saying about their MAGA Republican base right now when everything's going on. But according to MAGA Mike Johnson, we are now quite literally locked into a contest to determine whether we're going to keep our republic because he says, despite the fact that MAGAs have controlled the House, the Senate, the executive branch, which they literally destroyed the White House, like actually demolished it, and the court, the Supreme Court, they said that Democrats are the ones who pose an existential threat.

17:39Ben Meiselas:Really? Because the last time I checked, you also now have increased the debt over$40 trillion. What about Doge? Weren't we gonna get dividend checks? Weren't we gonna get rebate checks? You made us a lot of promises, but guess what? I guess like Donald Trump's whole life where he bankrupted this casino, that casino, this thing, that thing, I guess it's all one giant fraud because y 'all are just a bunch of con artists. And frankly, you're a bunch of communist con artists too. And you have a deranged form of communism that also benefits only two interests, Donald Trump and foreign countries, apparently, okay?

18:14Ben Meiselas:Because that's what we're saying. Anyway, here's what Mag and Mike says. Here, play this clip. Now, this is not a game. I mean, we've said, even a few years ago, Republicans and Democrats in Congress are arguing over marginal tax rates and shades of regulation. We are now quite literally locked into a contest to determine whether we're going to keep our republic, to keep the country as it is, or to break this thing down to the foundation and go to an entirely different road and set of principles towards communism. That's the that's the balance. Right. I mean, Donald Trump announced yesterday that we are creating a Trump owned oil company in the United States, a government owned oil company without congressional approval that's seizing 65 billion barrels of oil from Venezuela.

18:58Ben Meiselas:Really good luck with that. You understand the way the oil actually works in Venezuela, that the crude there is actually a very dense, sour, viscous type material that you need to actually build refining capacities for it, that there actually is no written deal. It violates the Venezuelan constitution and the United States constitution. But you just keep on lying. Just lie about everything. I mean, just a bunch of freaking liars all day. Anyway, everybody, we'll keep you posted every step of the way. Hit subscribe. Let's get to 7 million subscribers. Thanks everybody. Breaking news right now. My brothers and I wrote a book.
