In short
Monday Night Football recap and an “AFC contenders’ flaws” exercise—identifying what could break each playoff team, with heavy focus on quarterback play, run defense, and third-down reliability.
Guests
Dominique Foxworth (former NFL player/analyst; discusses Patriots/Giants and AFC weaknesses). Host: Mina Kimes (with Lenny).
Key claims
- Drake May is MVP-favorite because he separates from concerns: elite pocket discipline, pressure handling, and tight-window accuracy (first in NFL tight-window completion rate at 52%).
- Patriots’ offense is efficient even with limited help; defense has gotten “leaky” against the run recently.
- Giants’ Jackson Dart shows pocket-passing improvement but exposes himself to hits; coaching/discipline issues and risky quarterback scrambles are criticized.
- Broncos weakness: run game drop-off without J.K. Dobbins; Bo Nix is capable but inconsistent.
- Colts weakness: Daniel Jones under pressure has declined since early season; third-and-long QB reliability is a playoff question.
- Steelers: pass rush doesn’t translate to impactful disruption; offense lacks reliable passing big-play production.
- Bills: can’t stop the run; defensive issues cascade into everything else.
- Jags: Trevor Lawrence interceptions/drops/tipped-pick risk; skill group not “world beaters.”
- Texans: defense is elite; offense feels “normal,” with offensive line/run-game concerns and limited bailout on third down.
Notable examples
- Patriots: Marcus Jones 94-yard punt return TD; May 12-for-13 vs single-high (174 yards).
- Patriots throws: tight deep balls to Kyle Williams and Hunter Henry; “laser” to Hunter Henry off a corner/flat play.
- Giants: criticized helmet-to-helmet hit on Dart; Dart’s improved pocket passing vs earlier self-protection concerns.
- Texans: fast throws and coverage swarm; Alshair tackle on Tyler Warren in open space.

0:12Welcome back to the Mina Kimes show featuring Lenny. Monday Night Football Recap Edition here with Dominique Foxworth to talk about the Patriots, the Giants moving forward. We're also going to do an exercise that I hit you with, Dominique, last week. And as the playoff fields narrow, they're still pretty large. I wanted to go through all of the contenders and identify what their weaknesses are, because it does feel like more than any year in recent memory, every team is flawed. And so this week we're going to do the AFC teams. It's a lot. So we're going to get through those. And then next week, we're going to do the NFC teams.
0:55It's actually like 10 teams, I think, in the NFC are in playoff contention right now. I mean, even the Browns, we're not going to do the Browns, but technically the Browns are, I saw them on an in the hunt graphic. Yeah, they are. Yeah, maybe. I mean, if the Bengals are in the hunt, everybody's in the hunt, I guess. All right. Well, let's start with Monday Night Football because I do want to talk about the page. I want to talk about both these teams. We can take this kind of opportunity to talk about the Giants and spin it forward a little bit as their season is obviously over. But the Patriots are not only in the hunt.
1:25They are like maybe the best team in the AFC. The best team that hasn't played anywhere. It's kind of there are some reasonable questions and criticisms that you can apply to this team given the competition. But my overall takeaway here and my overarching kind of thought is just that Drake May is so clearly separated from those concerns, if that makes sense. Like, I do not watch him and think, wow, he's feasting on easy competition or wow, he's benefiting from wide. Like, to me, maybe more so than any of the quarterback. This is why I believe he is correctly the MVP favorite at this point. he Dominique is so obviously the engine of this offense in this team yeah I think it would look a lot different if we feel good about what Stephon Diggs is contributing right now but I think it would look a lot different if there was a different quarterback there they obviously they're there which I don't want to spoil anything because the Patriots are in our conversation later but to be honest about this conversation he's not getting a lot of help but this offense looks really productive and efficient.
2:34And again, yeah, the weaker competition is a point that's going to be made about them. But I know you also appreciate that they stumped this weaker competition. They aren't messing around. There's so many games like the Rams, the other team that we thought had started to separate themselves, but they lost this weekend. And it feels like no team has really separated themselves. So if you can use the weaker competition thing to knock them, but then you're like, who's the big dog that they're not ready for? Like the Ravens and the Chiefs don't seem as good as they once were. And obviously they have shown that they can beat the Bills and they get another matchup after this bye week against the Bills.
3:12Yeah, I, you know, the team itself is not perfect. And I think this in this game, too, you saw defensively some of the issues that have started to crop up. but um you know like just I probably believe in this quarterback right now more than almost every quarterback in the NFL when I watch him play and I mean go you go into this game down your left tackle your left guard your center's like ill and as bad as the Giants defense is defenses we know that they have really good pass rushers and Dominique it never at one point at all felt to me in this game that he was overwhelmed by pressure. And I want to give some credit to the, I thought the backup offensive lineman actually played really well.
3:57Viderian Lowe, whose name I was constantly, you know, cursing last year. I thought he had a good game, man. And, you know, Josh McDaniels did some things to help him out, like on some of the shots, they had guys staying in to pass protect, and they did some, you know, they kept Westover in the tight end. But again, time and time again, and I'm just watching them thinking, man, Drake May makes everyone else's life easier. Drake May stepping up in the pocket and letting rushers go by. Drake May is holding onto the football in the face of pressure. Drake May is making difficult throws. Drake May, I mean, he ranks top five and like top three in every metric possible.
4:29But the one that I think really, if you want to point to like, this is him. He is first in the NFL in tight window completion rate, 52%. No other quarterback is above 50%, only like three or four, even above 40%. His accuracy on some of these throws. I mean, it's just at this point, I expect the ball to be even the most difficult throws to be perfect. And almost always it is. Yeah, that was the it's it's I mean, the game really revolves around the quarterback. And we've made the game such all the rules and those moved it in that direction. And I think the point that I was going to make what you beat me to it, I didn't realize the tight window throw stat.
5:11But what you can do to help some of these linemen is leave more people in to protect. But that puts a little bit more stress on the receivers to get open and more stress on the quarterback to be able to fit the ball into tight windows. So, like, you can't help your O-line if you need all your receivers out there to stretch this defense. And you can't do that if your quarterback doesn't have the accuracy and touch. Like there are a few throws this season that just seem like incredible touch. Thinking back to the Buccaneers game where he dropped that one just over the DB while he was getting hit with pressure that turned out to be a big touchdown play.
5:49Like being able to consistently do that, the touchdowns that he threw in this game, there were great concentration catches, but those people weren't like, I mean, wide open. They had a little bit of separation and some distance, but both of those throws, Booty in particular was like really tight coverage. Yeah. It's a ridiculous throw, and it's tough. It's not an easy catch. It's over his head, but that throw is just incredible. Yeah. I mean, the throw to Kyle Williams, the go ball, just perfect. Yeah, it was a great throw. Kyle Williams, again, made a great catch, and he got open off the line of scrimmage, but it's just a really tough throw, and it's a deep ball accuracy.
6:27I think more and more we talk about this. That seems to be one of the more defining, I mean, more important characteristics for quarterbacks to have success in this league early on is deep ball accuracy. Yeah. And it's probably if I had to pick like one trade of his that's been truly special this year, it's that. Right. And it doesn't matter who whether it's Kyle Williams, who's super fast and did a great that was a great cash and he did a good job winning at the line of scrimmage as well. Hunter Henry downfield on the corner route. you know I mean you talked about like how when you keep guys into chip um you got fewer guys running routes that was a play where I think they had two backs in May fakes it to I can't remember which of the backs I think it was Stevenson or maybe it was Henderson who leaks out into the flat holds the corner and then boom just laser right pinpoint throw uh to Hunter Henry um I think it is a good it is an interesting game though to again show his progression I was thinking about it like with Vidarian Lowe in there because it was you know so bad the passing protection was so bad last year and but you're watching now it's like oh actually these couple of these same players are in there last year if there was one criticism I had of May who was playing in horrible circumstances is you did feel him bailing sometimes on the pocket and understandably so I don't think there was a single play in this one where I was watching and thinking you know even with again that talent discrepancy he he's just so he has so much pocket discipline right now and he steps Aikman pointed out numerous times how he was stepping up.
7:58Yeah, I don't know. Sorry if you hate the Patriots. This has probably been unlistenable because all we're doing is – I just don't know how you – there's not any fat in his game at the moment. Yeah, I think another skill that Drake May has and has demonstrated and it's really evident when you're looking at Jackson Dart is Drake May last year the criticism was would he protect himself? Would Drake May be able to protect himself? And he seems to have found that in his game this year. And obviously the story of the week right now, or at least of the day is Jackson dark refuses to. Yeah. We'll talk about that when we get to the giants portion of this discussion, but yeah, I did notice that as well.
8:36It was the contrast was pretty glaring. Like at the moments where Drake may decided to take off or he slid and, and you definitely saw that difference. I will say like, you know, again, so Patriots are on a perfect team. Well, one, one more thing on May though, you know, the, the, giants played a ton of single high and they play a lot of single there i think they play single high amongst the highest rates in the nfl and he went 12 for 13 for 174 yards against single high coverage so moving forward you know this team you cannot play that's the highest compliment i can give drake may is it's year two and there are already things you can't do he's you know like you have to be very nervous blitzing he annihilated the blitz single high coverage like he's already in that like let's just put a roof on this and dare them to run the ball category of quarterback right which is like rarefied air Matt Stafford you know what I mean Dak Prescott like the maze already there um they ran it okay you would have I think I the Patriots run game has been there's been moments where Henderson looks really good out there, but you would have thought, I would have thought it would look a little bit better against this Giants team, which has just been abysmal against the run.
9:52I just don't think they have a good run game yet. It's not a big problem. And then I would say actually on the other side, Dominique, Patriots run defense has gotten kind of leaky over the last few weeks. Did you notice that as well against the Giants? Yeah, I did notice that. And I mean, that's, so when you, It's funny because we're going to get into this exercise about weaknesses. And so I kind of made a list before I started looking for weaknesses. I made a list of things that kill teams in the playoffs. And because I wanted to find weaknesses for teams, but not the weaknesses that don't matter to me.
10:26So it's less specific and more like broad. But like these are the weaknesses that I think can kill teams in the playoffs and ability to stop the run. It's like football 101. one so like I I have some confidence in them figuring it out because they haven't been bad all together but I mean the Milton Williams situation like yeah Notanga in this too as well who's their stalwart nose tackle yeah just something because because the defense like my read on them the whole year was with a really stout against the run they kind of sell out to stop the run but they can be had through the air I said the past defense was very good in this one but the run defense was a little bit lackluster, but the injuries definitely factor into that.
11:08The other thing I'll say about the defense, they were hitting, man. Like, I don't know what Mike Rabel said to those boys before this game, and one of them was a bad, ugly hit. But, I mean, no, I'm not talking about that one. I'm talking about the – there was one that was helmet-to-helmet that I'm thinking of. I can't remember which player it was now. That was like, oh, that's too far. No, the Ellis Tick hit. Yeah, I'm sorry. If you have a problem with that, that's – take it up with your quarterback. I don't blame the Giants' offensive line because whatever, you know, they got to do their thing.
11:40But, like, that was about as perfect a textbook as it gets. And, boy, he got – I guess this is a good transition point to talk about the Giants. I gasped. That was one of the hardest hits on a quarterback I've seen in a minute, Dominique. Yeah, and it's completely unnecessary. necessary like the quarterback yeah right yeah I mean the hit was was great it's what you're supposed to do in that situation if the quarterback's gonna try to use the sideline then you have to hit them unless they're gonna go out but it was the first quarter you're on a team that does not have Super Bowl aspirations it's second down and what you gained in that situation was a foot maybe a yard more like it's just i don't know like i understand toughness and mentality and all that stuff but like that's just dumb and no one thinks that it's a worthwhile risk to take yeah and it kind of shows you how only how far coaching can because you know we all gave brian dable a ton of grief for all the design runs with dart and going to this one on the yet a single design they were like we're not doing that anymore great but the coordinator scrambles also happen and that But the quarterback, someone's got to figure that out.
13:01I don't know what to say. Like, it's just, it's very glaring. I also think defenses will go into games against him with, like, we're going to hit him if he exposes himself mentality. It was very obvious, right, with New England. And I don't think it's dirty at all. I think it's just quarterbacks are protected by the rules, and they have to play within those confines. I mean, it's funny, too, because I think as we protect them more, they take more leeway and still end up probably getting injured just as much or more. It's like a funny situation where it doesn't seem like the quarterbacks are healthier, despite the fact that we continue to protect them and they don't necessarily want to protect themselves.
13:48But the big point that I've been making on Jackson Dart and I made it on TV and I'll probably end up making it on my show later is that you have to understand that it's not about you at this point. Yeah. Yeah. Like you, everyone's career is tied to how healthy you can be when you become a franchise quarterback. It's not just about how tough you can be or how you're comfortable playing. Like if you get hurt, we all are unemployed. The other thing I'll say about him and I guess like to him, you know, in this kind of exercise, you don't have to do this, man. Like you're, I want to like Jackson Dart has from watching him in college.
14:24The thing I like best about him in college was actually the scrambling, to be honest. But he has dramatically exceeded my expectations as a pocket passer. And you saw it in this game. Like he is, he's a good quick game quarterback, right? Like when the ball comes out quick, it's usually, he's pretty accurate. He's accurate. He's accurate. he can win from inside the pocket. Yes, his legs are going to be part of the game, but he's not a quarterback. You look at him and say, if he doesn't run, what are they going to do? I think the lack of skill players around him obviously makes it challenging at the moment, although they seem to have found some.
14:59I mean, the tight end, Theo Johnson, I think, is becoming a real player for them. Obviously, he had the touchdown. He could have had the other deep catch. But, you know, and they're down neighbors, of course. Robinson's been okay it's still like a pretty weak group I understand that but moving forward if they continue to improve the pieces around him he has to recognize like it's kind of like how do I put this like you have a friend who thinks that they have to dress wacky to get attention but they're actually just like good looking on their own or something I don't know it's not a good analogy you understand what I'm saying it's like somebody who's like this is my thing and it's like it doesn't have to be your thinking thing yeah you don't have to do that don't take off the silly hat you know show us your face you don't have to be moxie guy like i like the that try hard guy is for the the or that try hard is like you don't have the physical tools like i get get your point yeah yeah anyways um i do think the job has some appeal i mean this is the other conversation there's two conversations now being had about the giants one is should joe Shane keep his job.
16:09I see no reason why personally. Yeah. Sorry. Like I just have stuck in my head now, which is kind of related how, um, guys always tell their girlfriend that she looks better with no makeup on because guys don't actually know what no makeup is. It's like, no, you just, you just don't know what makeup looks like. It's so true. It's so true. It's like how they're always like what a natural beauty and like so people say that not to make it about me but people be like wow you look so natural and i'm like i'm i'm wearing so much makeup right now you've i literally was just working all right no not that anyone's calling okay now that now that i sound weird um uh oh joe shane get him out of here i mean even i don't what's going on with abdul carter by the way you saw that a fake news about him went viral a fake news item but he has actually been punished now a couple times for being apparently one was sleeping and one was being tardy or something I don't know um okay so but so that's the conversation and the head coach thing is the conversation which is what kind of coach they want I mean I heard people are watching this game and they're saying we need a Mike Rabel like a you know a proven I'm like Mike who where who where is another Mike Rabel out there that I don't know about because that was like a once in a very rare occurrence and of course he went back to the team he played for like there's no Mike Rabel's growing on trees at the moment so I don't the whole like proven they want another Tom Coughlin type just you know how I feel about coaching head coaches which is it's very hard to predict who's going to be good but I think the number one thing they would do that is a mistake is going for a specific archetype rather than trying to find the person who's actually best for the job at this moment in time yeah i mean i think you uh you convince yourself of the archetype once you find the guy yeah right we always wanted a defensive minded right when you find out like your mentor or whatever find out what's available you figure it out and the thing to your point like i think we could say the same thing about shoddy and Dallas is like no one thought he was going to be great like it doesn't have to be this big name guy who's proven because those guys are going to be hard to find and yeah I don't suspect that even if Mike Tomlin becomes available he doesn't seem like the type of guy that would excite a fan base although I think that he would be really good I think that bringing him he'd be really good but it may not be the right mix like I it's just you never know what's going to happen in what situation my concern with tom would be the coordinator hires because you're gonna make two coordinator hires and he his track record over the last not great years not being yeah it's not been great i don't think arthur miller is to blame arthur arthur arthur smith thinking about the playwright uh is to blame for necessarily for what's going on with the offense i don't think he's to blame at all but it's that would be my issue is like we want to bring in some fresh offensive and defensive thinking and i don't know if you're getting that with him per se um it is the other thing that's weird i i thought so mike kafka is the interim coach and he's a guy who you know i was looking at him during the game and thinking if he had hair would he look less evil because he really looks like lex luther because it's his eyebrows sorry this is going off the rails um or like i feel like you had to be more effective to be to feel evil yeah it's not effective well the weird thing was okay so when they punted down like 20 points force and inches and i think that was just like a everybody go to bed signal i was surprised because like i was like kafka this is your chance man like and he was so bold with james winston it almost felt like he had a mandate to play it safe in this game.
20:09Yeah. I know that people think that this is the best, like, the best interview is actually being on the job, which I get it. I understand that idea. But also, you're putting people in a real bad situation and then assessing them. Like, you didn't install anything. You didn't prep this team. You are just taking over a team that's not winning. and then like, hey, you ain't winning enough games. You're out of there. I don't know. It just doesn't feel completely fair. But I guess you are getting a better look at them than you would get if you're just asking somebody some questions in the interview room.
20:48Yeah. I'm trying to think of like interim guys who have worked out. It's a pretty small number. It usually, yeah. Okay. Before we move on to the weaknesses of every AFC contender, it's time for the ones who get it done brought to you by Granger for the ones who get it done Granger offers the professional grade products you need delivered when and where you need them call click Granger.com or just stop by so I'm highlighting a specific player who got it done in this game it's not Drake May it's a man on the Patriots who this is from Patriots.com has the highest yards per punt return average in NFL history.
21:34That's Marcus Jones, who returned a 94-yard punt return touchdown, his second punt return score of the season. The Patriots are now first in punt return DVOA, unsurprisingly. This is a big deal in the playoffs. We never talk about this stuff, but when we're thinking about these teams and like the little edges that could make a difference. This, like, I was shocked. Gilliam, he's been their punter forever in New York. I was shocked when he punted it to him, like straight up the middle on that short field. Like he did a really bad job of this game, but that was, I was like, oh no. And touchdowns are nice from punt returns, but also just to your point, field position in these playoff games is these hidden yards where you can shift field position.
22:21Like at the beginning of this game, they kicked off and and they had a good return and it was like oh there goes your deferred advantage like the advantage you get from deferring not only get the ball at halftime but you hope that you can pin and will winfield position they're midfield right away because they can return the ball we're not going to talk about what happened to my guy i've been wondering if that was okay to bring up or not I can't bring it up. It's brutal. I feel bad for him. Yeah, it's tough. I don't know. I mean, it's not every day you see something you've never seen before in NFL field.
22:55I'll say that. History. Okay. That's it for the Patriots. Well, not it because we're actually going to talk about the Patriots again after the break because we're going to do all of the AFC contenders flaws. I'm going to go first when we get back. 24:36Dobbins is a concern of mine so since the last three weeks they had a bye in week 12 so it's been two weeks for them but they've been 31st in success rate R.J. Harvey against Washington which is a brutally bad run defense 13 carries for 35 yards against Kansas City he only had 11 carries for 30 yards I think Ben pointed this out to me weeks ago and I probably should have realized it was a bigger issue. Dobbins was like awesome in rushing yards over expected Kirk Carey. He averaged over 1.1 which is fourth. Harvey is not awesome. Way below average. Negative 0.05. And I think this matters Dominique because when I look at the AFC and I look at the teams that they could play in the playoffs, the Bills, the Chiefs again if that happens, the Steelers, the Colts, the Chargers, these are all teams you should run on you you have to run on like a team like the bills and if they can't improve that uh it gives me concern about the them from a matchup perspective and then the ability to control games yeah i i think that you what you said is obviously right on but i think you tried to separate that from the quarterback conversation and i think that it's also connected it's like one of the ways that I think about playoff teams and championship teams is like how many different ways can you win and how many different paths do you have to success so like defensive dominance is a path for them and you think that you pair that with like a running attack and a play action pass attack I think that's like the ideal way that they can win your point about Bo Nix is fair It's like he has that ability.
26:21So like to perform well through the air without relying on the passing game. But it's not consistent enough. So like if you don't have – and I thought that their O-line was really the engine. It's interesting that you pointed this out because it wasn't something that was on my radar. I thought their O-line was the engine to their running attack. I didn't realize it was so J.K. Dobbins dependent. So we'll see what happens going forward. But all this stuff is interconnected. yeah i think but then it's also interconnected to the defense right because same with the texans you don't need that much out of the quarterback you know i mean like i think that's the thing is like just get 20 points you know these playoffs you know um okay you have the pats who we just talked about but i'm interested in what you're saying because i think it's going to be on offense yeah I mean I think so I actually had a few things and the offensive line injuries is an issue their inability to run the ball is also an issue but I think they can't get stops on defense just can't get stops and I think it's um it's in part because the style of defense that they play and the their inability sudden inability or not inability their leakiness in the run game, I think is the word that you use, which is a good word because it puts them in tough situations.
27:41So this team, it's the same problem for a few other teams on this list, but you're going to have to be able to bow up and get some stops every now and then, and they can't do it, especially through the air. They had a problem with giving up these explosive plays, which is a different conversation, but this defense isn't bad. I'm not sure how to define them because they are, yeah, they're like above average, I would say, on defense, but they have some issues on defense that will pop up in the playoffs that you can't trust them to just lock somebody down. Yeah, I mean, they're not a great pass rush, and that was even with Williams, you know, and the run defense was a strength, but over the last few weeks it hasn't looked like strength to the same degree.
28:24So I think that's where you start to get worried. It's like, okay, you're pretty average and you've got good players, but, you know, I don't, yeah, I don't think it's special. Where have all the pass rushers go? I felt like that was this exercise to, well, I guess the Steelers have them, but of the teams that you assigned to me, I was like, eh. You actually, so funny because it just shook out this way. I think you got way more, well, anyways, we'll get through them. But, yeah, your team, you have more defensive issues on your side than my side, I think, for some reason. I have one team where defense is very much a glaring issue.
28:58That's not the Colts. The Colts, I actually didn't go, I think the, I thought the defense actually played really well against Houston, even despite losing Sauce Gardner, although you could feel that affect the game because Nico Collins just baptized them in man coverage multiple times. Nico Collins, by the way. Oh, he's back. Houston, well, you have Houston. I'm very interested in hearing what you have to say because Houston is a really fascinating team. It's not that hard. It's not that hard. Okay, we'll put a pin in that. Let's stick with the Colts, though. I went with Daniel Jones under pressure and I want to add a caveat which I actually don't think he was that bad against first of all every quarterback gets used in Texans has to be graded on a curve they are killing people holy shit I thought the same thing these are some awesome pros also Alec Pierce Alec Pierce is going to make so much money he was good man he's a good player yeah I'm sorry that defense got after him of course but I was impressed with some of the plays yes so I'm trying to make a take a wider view here because but I do want to make because I don't think he was good against Kansas City and I so so I do but I want to take a wider view but I wanted to quickly per se I don't think he's like why they lost that game per se um however Daniel Jones under pressure weeks one through seven first in QBR league-wide 90 since week eight so that's now six weeks 28th in qbr 5.8 qbr 5.8 under pressure again this isn't just a houston problem um it's been an issue now for a few weeks pittsburgh granted good pass rush chiefs and i think where it gets concerning is if they're not able to dominate on the ground and that's been In the case, as of late, you're starting to see him in more third downs, and that was an issue for them.
31:01I think when they were just destroying teams, they were so rarely in third and long, it just didn't come up. And now it's starting to come up. And I think the skill players are good enough. Offensive line, I think, is much better. Run blocking, pass protecting, that's starting to get exposed a bit as well. But the quarterback is the one I've got my eye on. And people would say, well, you know, how much of that is the bulk of his career? And I'd say a lot because he's the same person, even if he's been better this year. So that's my concern about the Colts. Yeah, the Colts are another team that fits into that category.
31:37I think they are probably the poster child of like one way to win teams where they don't have a dominant defense. They're not going to win that way. They don't have impressive passing attack independent of the play action. They are a team that's like, we run the ball, and everything else comes off of that. If we can't do that, I have yet to see them, of the wins that they have this year, yet to see them have a game that was like, oh, we did it without Jonathan Taylor. I don't see that happening. And play better defense. That's just something that's not going to be consistent. Like, the threat to run is one thing, But you can't always consistently, and we've seen it, consistently produce an effective running attack.
32:21I think the other thing you saw in this game was how much it hurts when Jones is limited physically as a runner. Because Houston, a team that is basically perfect on defense, but a quarterback can run on because of the style that they play. It's really important to have that escapability. And he was obviously, I mean, he's horribly injured. That's crazy. That's why I feel bad. Yeah, sorry. This is why quarterback is so important because the question that I'm ultimately asking when I do this silly exercise about like ways to win, I think what it comes down to is do you have a third and long quarterback?
32:57Yeah. Do you have a quarterback that at third and long can get the job done? And that's like Drake May, all the problems that that offense have, you got Drake May. You got a quarterback that can get it done consistently on third and eight. if you don't got a guy that on third and eight you feel good about things then i'm i'm gonna have some questions about you in the playoffs how many quarterbacks in the nfl do you feel good about on third and eight right now yeah right now we're just about to pull up alone yes uh yeah i i don't know who it is on this season alone it's like drake may what are the numbers are you pulling up to yeah i am distance long we'll do five or long five yards or longer how about five to ten I think they have it broken up in here somewhere.
33:39But anyway, go ahead. Yeah, you can do it. I just have it on third down. Okay, best quarterback, five yards or more on third down. Can you guess the number one quarterback in the NFL? Would it be Jordan Love? Yeah, it's Jordan Love. Nailed it. Number two, Marcus Mariota. What was he doing? Marcus Mariota has quietly been awesome since coming in. Free agent, about to get paid. About to get paid. Minnesota? Dak Prescott is number three. Oh, geez. Yeah, I'm not surprised by that. But, I mean, Marcus is, I mean, it's not a full season, so. Yeah, yeah, it's a smaller sample size. Hey, there's Kayla Williams in the mix.
34:20All right. Where's Drake? Where's Drake? Five. That counts Mariota, though. Okay. Yeah, Drake's awesome. All right. I was watching a lot of Packers this weekend, and I just, I know this is unrelated. Is that coming through? That's my computer, sorry. No problem. Never mind. I was going off course anyway. It didn't matter just how I love watching the Packers offense because they have no regard for the first down marker. It's like every play, big chunks. Now it wasn't for like a very unpleasant to watch part of the season. But yeah, Hooper Jordan loves back on the menu. you Christian Watson was the honestly is so important to that offense they protect like hey let it rip poop exactly uh I love watching it too okay um we're not talking about the backers today we're on the AFC you have the Steelers I mean you could pick there's multiple things I mean their defense can't get off the field that's they're bad in against the run they play a lot of man coverage and still blow assignments they actually have great pass rushers that win a lot but still don't disrupt the game in a way that I think they're they might be number one in pass rush win rate they're up there but it doesn't translate to effective impactful plays and then that's just the defense the offensive side of the ball is even more concerning if you ask me at least they I mean it's harder to find something that they do well but they also they have no reliable pass game despite the fact that they have a future hall of famer at quarterback and it's just a mess I don't know it was easy to find issues with this team yeah it's hard to no big plays like right that jumped out to me too where it's like if you guys aren't going to be like consistently good we gotta break off some big chunks they can't do that yeah uh quarterback doesn't want to hold the ball for more than two and a half seconds that's kind of the offense there in a nutshell the defense i wanted to ask you a question i was thinking about this watching the bills when a team is just beating you over and over with one play just a couple plays in buffalo they were running duo and then uh mid-zone week as a coaching staff at a certain point how much is that on you to come up with solutions when it's very clear that the players you have are getting dominated right so it's like i wasn't watching thinking like they should sub him out put him in or they should switch from you know like is there anything to be because i i think Like, as a fan, it's the most frustrating thing to watch in football.
37:20It's not only to lose to the same play over and over, but it'd be a running play. Yeah. And it's just horrendous to watch. So there were a couple of things that jumped out to me. When their corners don't crack replace well, which is a bad situation where, like, what I mean is, and it's not always a crack replace, but it's just playing the end man on the line of scrimmages. They don't do that well, which is a problem. I think also there's no answer for getting just physically dominated. However, try something. Give them different looks. Move different fronts. Completely sell out. Like, I think that is concerning because it didn't feel like they were trying new things in order to stop this.

38:05And especially when you're going against a team that has such a clear deficiency at wide receiver, we don't need no safety help. Challenge them. dare them and i i think when it gets as out of hand as it got like yeah you need to throw everything at them including the kitchen sink and they did not i i was hard pressed to identify a single change up yeah well and and just every player was losing it felt like yeah at the point of attack you talk about the deep i mean the wide receivers that dude's shavers who i feel like i'm half the time josh allen's throwing downfield i'm like oh my god he's throwing his shavers you know what justice for shavers because he was blocking his ass off in this game he was getting in there and just moving those corners um so was shakir i it was total physical domination and we'll talk about steelers ravens this week it's a very important game for both sides but i i just feel like yeah the bills are a really good running team and they have a lot of players who can block well but why would you not just do that to pittsburgh now moving forward you know still bills have better backs than most teams and as well of course the meantime show featuring lenny is brought to you by granger as you know managing maintenance repair and operations is never easy but for the ones who always rise to the challenge granger has your back from professional grade products you can count on to fast dependable delivery they're there to help you keep things running smoothly.

Chargers, me, this one we don't have to spend a lot of time on. very obviously the offensive line which at the moment has been reconfigured yet again Jamari Salyer playing left tackle so Pipkins is on the right side they're trying stuff to help him uh you know against the Raiders he was keeping in guys he was putting big bodies on the field there's a lot of max protect but that's the Raiders man like you know if who are obviously pretty dismal if you go up against a team with more than one pass rusher it's curtains for this group right now yeah i mean i could try to do the i mean it may not work because they're just a talent so deficient but just try to two-man routes and depend on herbert's accuracy and arm strength to squeeze in windows because right now well i mean that is if herbert can play because he's got an injury again because he's getting hit so often so yeah it's a that's one of those things that's fundamental to where like I'm out on you if you can't if your O-line is just bad and their O-line is pretty bad the Buffalo Bills is you yes I mean that's obvious they can't stop the run and they also can't they choose not to but I think they also are not good at man coverage but Their issues are defensively first for me is that inability to stop the run is devastating, and it trickles down to everything else on their team.
41:30You could argue that the Steelers' inability to run on them was more damning than the Steelers' inability to stop the run. I mean, it's equally bad. And our preview for that game was just like both these teams should be able to run the ball, and one of them was the Steelers just couldn't, which was crazy. I will say, and you're right about the run defense, And I'm not going to say one game changes things, but I was like very curious, like how was not able to just like put big dudes on the field and run on them? So the Bills play like a way more base defense this year than they did in years past.
42:02It's been the case most of the season. Jack Thompson, 31 year old former Panthers, you know, Sean McDermott, Jack Thompson, who was great. Then he got hurt. And then I feel like he was coming back from the hammy. he was unbelievable in this game going back and and watching like all the negative the unsuccessful runs for pittsburgh i feel like he was in on almost all of them and you know i think moving forward but buffalo the hope is if you do play a decent amount of base his continued health and involvement um is a big factor my concern there though is you're going to come against teams who can throw on you in base if you if you're all at the base defense but it did look better just for just for one night against Pittsburgh.
42:46Teams can throw on them whether they're in base or not. So, like, I would suggest that you pick something and stop it. I guess I didn't follow the exercise as, like, one weakness. I got piles of weaknesses for certain. Yeah, the Bills, I mean. The receivers, of course, are a major weakness that jumps out. Yeah, and for the first two quarters of the Steelers game, I think I posted at one point I was with a sad face the leading target share leading target getter right now is Ty Johnson guys were hurt KK's going to come back at some point against teams every Bills game is like can they stop the run if they can't they're probably going to win but if you go up against a team that can stop the run they got the Bengals this week right Yeah.
43:43They should be able to run on them. They should be able to run on the thing. I mean, the Ravens couldn't. That's one of their problems. Yeah, they do have the Bengals. Sneaky. Because the Bengals right now have like a probably single-digit percent chance to get in the playoffs if they lose this game.
44:02And the Bengals quietly have like an awesome run game too, so they'll be able to run on Buffalo. Who am I going to pick? I don't know. All right. I have the Jags. This was really hard because they're the weirdest team. I've decided. Of all the AFCs, like most of these, I kind of know what you're going to say. You probably know what I'm going to say. The Jags are so strange. I mean, week to week, you could say consistency from Trevor Lawrence. I wouldn't – he's coming off a really good game. It's been ups and downs. You could say consistency from the pass rush. Sometimes they look awesome. you know once the turnover luck ran out i think i think they there still is it is a very improved unit defensively i'm gonna go with though just thinking about this team in the playoffs and like if i'm trying to imagine like if i'm watching this game what is the thing where i'm watching and i'm thinking this is why they're losing and they're bounced one would be trevor lawrence throwing budget interceptions sure just the group of skill players is like are they is this good enough because jacoby myers they trade for jacoby myers great trade he is their number one receiver now.
45:10Jacoby Myers, your number one receiver in the playoffs. Get Brent Strange back. I mean, it's Parker Washington, Brian Thomas Jr. It's just not a group of world beaters here. Obviously, though, Travis Hunter, who's added some juice to that group. The offensive line has had their ups and downs as well. You could pick them, too, but I think just offensively, I feel like we're headed for a game. I could just very easily envision a game where there's like a zillion drops and a tipped pick. And I don't know, just, you know, it's not good enough. Yeah. Nah. Who are you afraid of, you know? Yeah, it's, well, if it's Trevor, it's what Trevor Lawrence shows up is the question.
45:55And it's, I think it's been more concerning than encouraging, honestly, this year. So like, that's where my mind would go, which you're probably right, is something that you can't change, and he has the potential to get it done. But he also, if I were a Jacks fan, that would be my biggest concern. The rest of that stuff seems kind of secondary. All right. Who do you want? You got the Texans. We got two more teams, it looks like. Yeah, I'm surprised. I thought that – Oh, no, wait. We got three more teams. Sorry. Yeah. I'm surprised. You said something earlier about the Texans that I thought it was obvious.
46:32First place to go is the O-line. like their inability to run the ball and their offensive line issues. Like there's, there is nothing. I refuse to listen to any concerns about the defense. No, no, no. Yeah. I mean, there's no weapons outside of Nico Collins. Like there are other offensive issues, but I feel like it all stems from the O-line. You want to say CJ Stroud? Is that what you're saying? No, I was going to say that the quietly, the line hasn't been as bad. Nope. Nope. Nope. I won't stand for that. I'm looking at the competition because I do think that's, you know, okay. So they haven't, it's been the Colts, the Bills, you don't have a great pass rush.
47:16The Titans. 16 to 13. But I mean, the rest of our schedule, it's the Chiefs, you don't have a pass rush. Spoiler, that's mine. On Sunday night. The Cardinals. The Raiders. The Chargers. The Colts. So this could be a misleading stretch where we think the offensive line is fine. But you talked about this. Whose pass rush really scares you right now of the contenders in the AFC? We're just digging the AFC. That really scares me. The Texans, their own pass rush. The Texans are all pass rush. I know, I mean, the Steelers, I think their pass rush is also scary. Denver. Yeah, Denver, of course. Yeah, right.
48:02I'm surprised that you think – I mean, they don't run the ball well either. Like, it's not just their offensive line being able to protect their quarterbacks. Their offensive line allowing them to do anything that they want to do offensively. And maybe it's been better in the last few weeks. I don't think it's solved. I need something else. I don't think it's solved, but I think that the whole overall offense just looks kind of normal. That's what I genuinely believe. It doesn't feel like, oh, it's third down, C.J. Stroud, bail us out the way it did last year like that right now it feels like you look skeptical you're not a believer I mean what would you say is the weakness then because I know you're not going to say anything about the offensive line yeah yeah oh okay okay okay I don't disagree with you I'm just saying it's not the first the first five or six weeks of the season I was like yeah right run it back I I was like yeah I'm not even I can't even be pressed to deal with this and there has been some improvement.
49:01Do I think it's a great group? No. Stroud looked good, too. Yeah, Stroud looked good. It's like the Cowboys defense, I guess. It's like you don't got to be great. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Get close to that. You got the freaking 85 Bears on the, like. Yeah, for sure. They're so fun. Texans defense is my favorite unit to watch in all of football right now, and it's not even close. you know i was watching them against dan danie dimes and thinking there's nowhere to hide when you play this team because gore grass throw the ball super quickly you know second fastest time to throw the football and everybody it's just that swarm mentality there was a play in that game that it's the most boring whatever play that has just been in my head where uh they blitzed I think it was first down and correctly he throws to Tyler Warren in the flat and how many times have we seen Tyler Warren just that turns into a chunk game he's got tons of grass in front of him Alshair flies in makes just an unbelievable open field tackle and I'm thinking like what where do you hide against this they're so good the linebacker is the weakness two or twos by the way covering a guy and man on that but i mean it's just they're just unbelievably talented top to bottom through the course of the game yeah you'll get a player two here or there but they'll get more and you'll pay for whatever play that you get it's a it's a fun defense to watch man and that d line oh anderson jr is already top three um and garrett has the crown but he's next i he's so smart too i love the way he plays his awareness of like what the quarterback wants to do on every play and you saw i'm sure they used him as a spinner that was disgusting that's an epidemic right now across the league if i'm an nfl center i'm going every game shaking my boots if there's an elite pass rusher because it's they're all copying each other it's like you know on offense when they all started running like the fast motions or something and then you're just like yeah like anyways sorry this is just about weaknesses um okay all that good pass rush talk brings me to the chiefs who cannot get after the quarterback positionally this is the if the chiefs miss the playoffs this is why to me um i mentioned this during the Cowboys game.
51:33So they blitz Dak. He's picked. I'm thinking, whoa. After the pick against the Blitz, and they continue to Blitz him at a really high rate because they do not have a four-man rush outside of Chris Jones. And if Chris Jones doesn't go crazy, they're screwed. Dak went 15 for 18 for 190 yards. This year, when they Blitz, this is really bad. They are 28th in pressure rate, 31st in yards per play, 25th in success rate. 2022 through 2024, so the previous three years, they were first in yards per play, second in pressure rate, third in success rate. So they've gone from being one of the best and most effective blitzing defenses to one of the worst by a pretty significant margin.
52:26So when people talk about the Chiefs and they're like, what like who's different what's going on that's it right there to me like that's the biggest issue especially when you go up against quarterback like doug prescott who knows what you're doing like he wasn't coverage rotations he sees them you know maybe against like a bad quarterback it'll work but it's not enough right now against the good quarterbacks is that a spags issue you think i mean i know the reason for blitzing uh is not on him but the ineffectiveness of the blitzes it felt like because people weren't surprised we always knew they were going to blitz yeah and he's not uh for whatever reason not scheming him up right or anticipating the lines um the protection so he can get that advantage i'm not sure uh mitchell schwartz made a great point to me the other day which was the loss of justin reed he feels like has been massive in terms of like the efficacy of the blitzes i think i think it's a people problem in in large parts but also yeah like it does feel like teams have a good beat on what they're i mean the colts didn't so like it's you know it's it depends on the quarterback i think and who you're going up against but it's just not right now it's not good enough and then against the cowboys where the receivers are you got good corners but the cowboys receivers are better than them and bigger you know so it's just that's a tough matchup for everybody but i just don't think this pressure is good enough All right.
53:53You got the Baltimore Ravens. Yeah, that's a lot. Pass rush. We don't have to get into that because we just did some pass rush. They got red red zone issues. They also lead the league or near the top of the league in three and outs. I think we either can talk about like their issue with Buchanan at linebacker, which is a concern for me. But I think the most glaring thing is Lamar Jackson isn't good right now. that's their biggest weakness is he's maybe it's a result of his injury but he can't like his accuracy and passing's been gone obviously his explosiveness isn't there in a rushing game so like the biggest concern and the biggest weakness of the team which I guess should be kind of encouraging yeah right because it's like your biggest weakness is that Lamar isn't playing like yeah so the hope is like well we know who he is he'll get healthier or figure it out or whatever the hell's going on with him because he looks like a completely different player yeah so in some ways it's like a kind of a you're right it's like a like at least it's not like a personnel team-wide issue um and the defense seems to have there's still issues but at least the defense is at minimum average now i think a little better um i would say this about lamar last week because he obviously awful on Thanksgiving.
55:11He did seem to be moving a little bit better. So, I mean, I'll do the Patriots. Obviously the Patriots, the Steelers game in depth, but like maybe if he can move again, you can get the run game going. You can create a little bit of misdirection and conflict as you head into a game against one of the worst run defenses in football. But the passing accuracy, I just don't know what's going on. I struggle to offer a good explanation because Because, yeah, they don't have world beaters and, you know, there's some issues with the group. But guys are open. He's missing throws. I'm not watching it thinking, like, nobody's open.
55:49Lamar sucks. Or not Lamar. The offense sucks. I'm thinking quarterback's not the quarterback. I will say, you know, he has some big plays that were called back. That would be another thing on point, too, like the penalties. Yeah, just, like, it looked worse than it actually was because of likely fumbling it. Yeah, and as an afferent, yeah. He's still capable of some pretty high-end plays, too. I think it's just the consistency is just non-existent at the moment. Yeah. I mean, the injuries, I'm sure, play a part in this stuff. But, yeah, the accuracy is shocking because that was an issue early on, like from before he was drafted, and we thought he fixed it.
56:26He did. Yeah. And for him to regress this season is very surprising. And, I mean, it's encouraging if you're a Ravens fan because I think the defense has gotten to a point where it's good enough. the pass rush has improved but I think it might also be a similar situation to like the the Texas offensive line it's like I just got a couple good pops of pass rush but I don't think it's something you can trust I think you're right um Raven Steelers wolf wolf yeah for the division yeah my parents have season tickets and um he said he wanted to go and I was like I got to work. I ain't going to be able to make it to that one, buddy.
57:12Keaton Mitchell, maybe. He's fun. He is fun. Also, like, I feel like the Steelers are going to sell out so hard to stop the run after last week. So maybe the play-action pass will be there for Lamar. Yeah, we'll see. Like we said, the spin zone is, it's not like the Chiefs where I'm like, I don't know how you rush the passer, or the Chargers where I'm like, I don't know how you fix the offensive line. The player is your best player, and he's your weakness at the moment, which is crazy. So spin zone. That could get better. AFC. Oof. What a mess. What a mess of a conference right now. Let me wrap up with a quick question for you to kind of end where we started.
57:56Are the Patriots the best team in the AFC in your mind? Yeah, I think so. I mean. Ooh, don't hurt me with the enthusiasm. I can't be enthusiastic because I have my own personal biases from the beginning of the season. It's hard to bring it around. And they have obvious weaknesses. It's just nobody looks like the team. No one looks like a champion right now. That's why we did this. To make a point, which is all these teams have flaws. I think the if the top three teams are the Patriots Broncos and the Texans defense well but the Texans have a quarterback yeah I like goes with their defense I kind of like the Texans rise in here to be clear my answer is still the Patriots because it's a quarterback No, uh-uh.
58:52Mina Kaj was giving the stamp of approval to the Texans offensive line, so I'm in. I still, yeah. It's actually MVP, defensive player of the year is easy because it's obviously Miles Garrett. MVP, I think, is going to go down to the wire a little bit, but Drake Mays got the Bills and the Ravens.
