In short

Chris Long and Mina Kimes rank NFL teams in a “Power Hour 2” defense-skewed power ranking, debating matchups and where teams fall from top contenders through the playoff cutoff and beyond.

Guests

Chris Long, former NFL player and Greenlight Podcast host. Mina Kimes is the host (not a guest).

Guest background

Long is a retired NFL defensive player and current football podcaster; he emphasizes defensive scheme, coverage, and defensive line value (e.g., Fangio’s framework, dominant interior tackles).

Key claims

  • Eagles and Ravens lead the defense-focused top tier; Eagles get the #1 nod over Ravens for proven playoff success and secondary additions (Jalen Carter + corners).
  • Ravens beat Chiefs at #2; Chiefs are still feared but ranked behind.
  • Chiefs #3; Bills #4; Lions #4 spot discussed; Commanders over Lions in one swap.
  • Texans defense is elite/fast and could be underrated; Packers drop; Bengals drop unless Trey Hendrickson plays.
  • Vikings are a high-variance pick due to quarterback uncertainty but strong defense/coordinator fit (Brian Flores).
  • Cowboys can outperform Niners due to offensive firepower and defensive scheme/health optimism.

Notable examples

  • Fangio coaching and Eagles surviving Bryce Huff’s issue.
  • Steelers Watt/Highsmith as an edge example where coverage matters.
  • Texans “downhill” defense and limiting yards after catch.
  • Bengals “PTSD” from prior season volatility; “if Hendrickson doesn’t play, don’t talk Bengals.”

0:34Welcome back to the Minikaim show. Power rankings edition. Power hour is what I call it. This is the second installment. The first was with Ryan Clark. We took a brief break to do a podcast with Dan Orlovsky last week, but now we are back with the one and only Greenlight podcast host, former NFL player, Chris Long. Chris, are you ready to rank some teams? Yeah, Mina. Full disclosure, I thought, as you know, we were ranking defenses, but I'm going to give it a whirl. I know the defense is very well and you know, offense is always on TV. So we'll make this work. I like an off. I like a defensive skew though, because I feel like teams with good offenses get ranked all because we just favor offense so much.

1:16Yeah. Number one in the power rankings, Denver Broncos. Do you, I had the Broncos as my number one defense of 2025 and I got a little bit of heat for that. Do you agree disagree before we get going who cares about heat first off like let's act like any of this stuff stays the way it is like month to month week to week and um you know it's hard when your takes actually recorded on camera i'd like to pull some of these these people who are giving you heat i'd like to pull their takes up their timelines um september we'll see how it ages i don't know i pretty good about it um so i like what the way we do this is i throw out two teams and basically you just tell me which one you think is gonna be better it's super easy and then tell me why so in some ways you don't like we kind of take the heat off of either of each other because i can say well i didn't pick them but then you didn't pick the two teams so i'm giving you the framework first uh i'm gonna mix up a few of the teams some of the rankings i did with ryan just to keep it interesting and you know i've just been giving it soft but i'm not going to mix up the first two teams i'm giving you to choose between and that i got one the afc one the nfc for the number one spot in the nfl are you taking the philadelphia eagles or the baltimore ravens oh you know um

2:39gosh i'm gonna take the eagles they have more proven playoff success man like when when all things are close um and they are like listen lamar was fantastic i know hertz has the um has the super bowl trophies but i'm not going to do the thing where as a homer i say hertz is better than lamar lamar was arguably the mvp last year right and um you know some additions in the secondary i'm pretty excited about uh what's the kid stark's name from georgia yeah um you know oa quietly had double digits last year i think they're gonna be tough to run the ball on you I'm a defensive guy and I prepped for defense.

3:13I also want to say this. The Derrick Henry, hey, this guy's going to get the ball a million times a year, year over year over year, and never slow down thing. I'm not betting on it slowing down, but I do feel like the Eagles, they deserve that number one spot over the Ravens. Okay. Again, I'm going to do the same choice that I gave Ryan. Ravens versus Chiefs for the two spot.

3:42I'll go Ravens. Okay. Now, I want to say this, just going back for a second. The reason I have belief that the Eagles are going to actually be able to replace some of the guys they lost defensively is because the corner play, man. The corner play, we'll see what happens at that third spot. But, you know, the two guys that they drafted, they're going to make things very easy. And having Jalen Carter and two really good corners outside, like, that's a winning combination in the NFL defensively. And Fangio can coach them up. All right, so I'm going to take the Ravens over the Chiefs. It's kind of interesting, just to keep it on defense for a second, that the top two teams, the Eagles and the Ravens, so when we did the defenses pod, they were both top four defenses, right?

4:21Got it. And neither have elite edge rushers, I would say. And this is, of course, a question – I think it's been a question with the Baltimore for a few years now. It's a question for Eagles, especially with, obviously, Josh Sweat moving on. But it doesn't seem to matter. and they do play. It's not – there are some similarities between their defenses. Do you feel like they're just – it's just that their rosters are more complete than everyone, or do you think maybe having, like, really, really good defensive tackles might just be more valuable for them? For the Eagles? For both teams, honestly.

4:55Well, I would just say – well, yeah, having no edge rush, I mean, or less edge rush in a team with, like, hey, you look at the Pittsburgh Steelers. They have maybe one of the best duos in the league, and they've had it for a couple years now in Watt and Highsmith. And, you know, but if the coverage isn't right outside, it doesn't matter. I think coverage can make rushers more than rushers can make the back end go. I really do like, and I'm a rusher. I should be saying, hey, our value's, you know, that much more. But I really do believe, like, having the scheme framework that Fangio has and the insertion of Cooper DeGene last year made a defense who, in the Atlanta game, Kirk Cousins is marching up down the field early in the season.

5:36and people are saying, where is the pass rush, right? Yeah. Me included, I was like, is this group going to have trouble getting the quarterback? You know, and it just goes to show you that the guys in D-line room are going to hunt. It just depends on what's going on behind you and being able to just make that one little tinker. And having dominant defensive tackles, you mentioned it, like it's such an edge-centric game. We're always talking about edge players and that sort of thing. But having one of those dudes inside can make everybody around you go. And I also think like all the Eagles need to do, for instance, is and listen, I was part of a Super Bowl team in New England.

6:12We didn't have a lot of great edge rushers on that team. It was like, you know, they let Chandler Jones go the year before. It was like me, Jabal Shear, Rob Ninkovich. Like it was a platoon unit. You know, it was like a bunch of good players, vets and that sort of thing. Like the Eagles can make hay with whoever. I really believe that because of the coverage of the guy inside. And all they need is like one of three of their new additions to hit. They survived the Bryce Huff issue last year. You know, if you just said, hey, Bryce Huff was going to be like just a strikeout and they're still going to be dominant.

6:44Yeah. Yeah. No, we're going to talk about the Eagles defensive. I'm doing NFC East this week, so we're going to get into Joma. I think I'm saying his name right now. Hunt, Nolan. And it's a good group. It's an exciting group. Okay. So sticking with the theme of not – actually, none of my top four teams have dominant edges. uh number three the Chiefs are still on the board I guess Chris Jones technically like is like a part-time edge for them now but um okay so we're gonna sorry I know I said I was gonna mix it up I promise I will but I'm still sticking it's just the top is so top-heavy in the NFL right now Chiefs

7:29bills man I'm really afraid the Chiefs are going to figure it out again a little bit this year and like get on the get back on the right track um they've kind of done everything they've done over the last two years a left-handed whether it was like people dropping passes or you know not being able to protect last year just kind of inching by and then Dan broke in the Super Bowl I worry that they're going to get their feet under them it's very close for me but I have to give it to the Chiefs because of what I just did to the Ravens now the Bills have had a lot of playoff success but not against that team therefore it would be disrespectful to put the Bills ahead of the Chiefs talk to me week five of the season I might tell you the Bills are going to the Super bowl.

8:12It's just going to depend on the vibe at that point. But on paper, you got to give it to the Chiefs. I feel like the Chiefs have also learned, earned the benefit of the regular season doesn't matter as much, like even if they're struggling in the first few weeks. Okay. Bills, Lions for the four spot. Bills. And I love the Lions, you know, replacing a center, a great center is a big deal um we'll see how that that works out um listen they played really admirably with a lot of guys banged up last year i thought that was great but you've got two coordinators you have to replace now i know they're not looking at it personally as like full-on scheme you know reshuffling because you know dan has a program in place but that's that's a tall task and yeah i just josh allen or jared goff Josh Allen but not just Josh Allen right the run game the offensive line those offensive line is like one of the most slept on I mean it's not slept on but yeah dominant group I like that they added the defense get some players back no question but you know like Lions fans will say hey we're gonna have a hell of a defense the Bills end the season with just a terrible showing outside and that that's another reason defensively where you know it's easy to boil these Chiefs Bills matchups down to just the quarterbacks.

9:35And again, here I am flip-flopping on this thing, but you know, that defense that the chiefs were playing against that in that final game, I mean, it was Swiss cheese. Elam was out there. It was a struggle. So they got to get that under control, right? I mean, they've made efforts to get that under control. They addressed that in the draft. Lions also have a fantastic run game. But, but I just think Ty goes to the quarterback. it's fair okay so i'm this is where i'm finally making a change from last time i'm going to boost up a team that i had a little bit lower the lions versus the team that knocked them out of the playoffs the washington commanders who's better i think the commanders are going to be pretty good are you taking them i'll take them wow okay you're not worried about the pass rush since we're taking a little bit of defensive focus because i'm worried about the pass rush i mean their pass rush wasn't star-studded last year don't you wish though they just got out and added one edge oh i would have loved it i would have loved it but they made they made hate with those guys last year i mean like um before the season if you'd have told me that that they were going to get production out of some of the guys that just kind of popped up and played well for him.

10:55I say this like, hey, the regular season, you might look up at me week 10 and say, the Lions are clearly better than the commanders, right? Like you're going to say, if anybody cares enough about what I had to say on this list, like months from now. But when you get into the playoffs, who's got the better quarterback? The teams are not, you know, they're not that different. You know, I think the commanders are going to be, on paper at least better than they were this year um you could look at the sophomore slump thing you'd say hey is cliff really gonna call a complete season two years in a row like i don't know but the quarterback's pretty damn good yeah i mean i was just actually looking at the my notes from the game and they lost and you know the whole lions defense was injured but even all year and this is their tendency one of the blitz heaviest defenses in football and it was literally i mean just jane daniels it's crazy how in just as a rookie he became one of those unblitzable dudes and he shredded he i mean they split listen 55 of the time and he just absolutely destroyed it i feel like for them to have a chance against him in particular they have to be able to get pressure with four this year no question no question i i just i look at that kid and i think he's on a on a star trajectory i mean it's like it's a beaten it's a well-beaten path at this point to give that take.

12:16But I mean, you could see it pretty early last year and to see him go into the playoffs and perform like he did. Listen, they go to they go to Philly and that team was just like a tidal wave. They were just too much. That team was just too good. Right. Like the barometer for where the commanders are. I mean, it's definitely relevant how they play in division, but it's not how the game against maybe one of the best Super Bowl teams of this century looked against them in the final game. Okay, so we still got the Lions on the board. This is our top five. I am once again, I got a lot of heat for bringing up, for putting this team high.

12:53I don't care. I still believe in them. Packers. I'm going Lions-Packers. Gosh, I believe in them too. But the quarterback, quarterback's got to play better at the end of the season. Out of respect for the Lions, I've got to give the Lions the nod. I've jumped out of the gym for the Packers. I think they're a good team. And, you know, like, hey, if we get a couple weeks in the season, I might think differently. I just – they haven't shown me enough in that spot. They really haven't. And the Lions have. Every time they play the Packers, they step up. And if it comes down to division, home games, that sort of thing, like, you know, unless you're hosting in January in Lambeau, I like the Lions.

13:38now we go on two teams that i feel like i always end up pairing because i kind of view them as the afc nfc version of each other packers against the texans for seven texans oh okay i think the texans are too low here where would you have them where would you have higher they're going to be in top five i'm not going to say how far they're going to go at this point but they're going to be a damn good football team i had them as my second best defense I think you could argue they're one. I like both. I had, listen, I'm right there with you. With, you know, a ton of respect to the Eagles defense, I think they'll be able to be in that top three as well, how it shakes out.

14:15But to me, and Nico Collins said this on our show last week. He was like, we got the best defense in the league. And he said it like so confident. I didn't know as an interviewer how to like, yeah. And I'm like, am I going to be co-signing this take? but as I looked at it on paper and listen you also have to consider the Texans played all their games in crisis last year defensively I mean they made things happen I think they lost they lose that primetime game against the Lions where Goff threw five picks they did yeah it's hard to do stuff like that in the NFL I think if they can figure out the offense I mean obviously Laramie Tunsil that's a different situation Also another checkmark in the commanders.

15:02You want to talk about like the commanders getting better. They got better there. But I think if they can just get it under control, Stroud's going to do the opposite of regressing to the main. He's going to go back to where he was, I think, a little bit. And I think defensively, they're one of the fastest teams in the league, if not the fastest defense in the league. Like I have that Chicago primetime game burnt in my brain. It was like they were out for blood. they play that way and they play downhill so fast everything the NFL does now is about like quick game and it's about like out to the perimeter fast and that's the one thing I worry about them is if you punch them in the mouth I want to know who they are like when the Ravens punch them in the mouth they go gap scheme ran down their s**t I want to know who they are in that situation but when it comes to throwing these bubble screens and getting out on the perimeter and the quick game like you don't want to go over the middle against this team and you don't want to catch a screen pass outside the number against this team.

15:59I mean, they're fast. I have such a bias now towards defenses that can limit yards after the catch and they're just run and hunt. The Texans, they're like a little bit of a throwback, right? Because I get so obsessed with these Mike McDonald defenses that are so schematic, complicated, the way they get pressure is so interesting. And the Texans are like, we're just better than you. Our front and our back. Linebacker is a little bit of an issue with them. But yeah, it's a really good defense. And look, that's what I said. I wanted you to bring a defensive. They might've gotten underrated last week because I didn't focus enough on how good the defenses are finding.

16:34Okay. So the Packers are dropping. I do like Al Shayer and I like Harris played really well down the stretch. So, I mean, things have to break right for them, but that that's definitely not their, their best levels, probably the backend. Yeah. And then the, the, the edge group is it's four deep. My guy, Daryl Taylor, who I was waiting a couple years to, hey, it finally happened. The guy looks like a real rusher to me. I mean, it didn't take that long, but I really liked him. And now you've got Autry there, who was there last year. I think he's going to be even better this year. Will Anderson and obviously Hunter.

17:09That's hell. And CJGJ, who's just like the perfect fit. Yeah, he is. In many hilarious ways. Okay. So the Packers have dropped. But I'm going to put them against the Bengals here. This is where what we were talking about weighs in, which is how much of a defensive focus matters. Well, I spent the majority of last year trying to justify that the Bengals were going to make a run because Burrow was so good. And it turned out none of us were wrong about how great he was. It's just we didn't know how low the floor was. And I just – I'm going to say it. I think LaFleur is a better head coach. I think LaFleur is a better head coach, and that's a shame that we're – Not terrible.

18:01Yeah, but it's a shame that like when it comes down to a Joe Burrow-led team and a Jordan Love-led team, no disrespect, who I think is a good football player, but Burrow is one of those guys that I think it's the Packers. I think they're just more physical. Like when it comes to a matchup between these two teams, which you only see in the Super Bowl in the postseason. But yeah, I think the Packers are physical. Like when you go see them in camp, at least last year, we bounced around to a couple camps. We went to the Eagles camp. We went to the Bills camp. We went to a couple other camps. And then we went to the Packers camp, including the Vikings camp.

18:39And the Packers blew me away as the only team that seemed as big as the Eagles. Like even remotely close. They're not. No one is. But I was like, they're just big and physical. When they play their best, they just have to win their damn games in division. Yeah. Which they struggle to do at times in big spots.

19:01Bengals versus Rams for nine.

19:10Here's what's going to happen. The Rams are going to start the season. We're going to be like, damn, the Rams suck. there. Stafford looks old, and then they're going to surge. God, this is tough. Is Hendrickson still holding out? I know the AMC North last week, and my official position on this is if Trey Hendrickson doesn't play, I don't want to talk about the Bengals. I'm capping out. I don't want to watch this defense. I don't want to talk about it. If he plays, we can talk about this team we can have a conversation about the defenders so i i picked him to win the division last year i'm sorry bangles fans like if you care i will revisit but at this point i can't give you the benefit of the doubt i think the rams d line is spicy spicy do you see what uh teron armstead said about jared ruse a little extra chip on that dip but i i appreciated it hearing him give some love to a young player.

20:08Uh, okay. So we're doing the Rams over the bangles. Yeah. Angles are job dropping. We're at 10. The bangles are Aaron Rogers on draft day. They might win it all, but they gotta wait the whole hour. Well, I don't think they're gonna have to wait too much longer. Um, we're gonna go bangles versus Broncos here.

20:35defense. I like the Broncos man. Over the Bengals. Yeah. Is this how much of this is just you thinking this is one of the best two defenses in the NFL? I trust the coach and I trust the defense and I don't, I haven't grown distrustful of the quarterback yet. Although we know that he is eligible for the year two slump. I just, it's almost like I have PTSD from the Bengals last year. We had a grill on our show, Mina, that Dr. Fax was putting the Bengals on this grill and saying they were cooked every week, like every single week. And I would argue vehemently at the open of every show, they're not dead yet.

21:20They're not dead yet. I remember staying up watching that chargers game watching the playthings game watching like how many dumb ways can you lose a football game and and all due respect to joe burrow who is that that man i can't i can't give you all the benefit of the doubt yet i'm sorry this matters defense matters all right does it matter so much that you would take okay so this is where that's our top 10 by the way folks Yeah. The Broncos made the top 10. So 20 teams make the playoffs or so now? Yeah, right. When do we get to where I'm really disrespecting a team? Where's the playoff cutoff?

22:0114. So 15 is when you're out. Okay. Okay, so we're still in the playoffs. So the Bengals are still on the board. And this is a change from last week. I think there's a team here who could be a lot higher that hasn't been mentioned, but go ahead. i'm gonna throw a curveball here and put in the vikings because of the vast spectrum of what they could be vikings or vikings or bangles your bangles are still here please vikings defense we love the vikings defense we love the vikings defense we love the vikings defensive coordinator I don't love their corner situation me neither um I love their rushers John Grenard's a treat to watch that was Van Ginkle those guys are awesome a great example too of a coordinator I I said this I did a Viking spot recently I was like you can tell that Brian Flores works hand in hand with the front office yeah they get him his dudes you know up front like they're just every player they brought into that front seven is such a perfect fit for heck yeah that's why i'm gonna take the vikings because they also try to get more physical offensively and listen i know it was just a preseason game but they really had they had jj mccarthy out there with a full day's work and he ended up getting hurt but he looked really he looked capable i mean like it's one it's one preseason look but um i trust the head coach i think sam donald's a good football player but you know his his his his ceiling started to show a little bit right like at the end of last year in some situations and hey listen it was rough he was set up to fail at the end of the season they couldn't block anybody but um I think there's reason to believe they really like this J.J.

23:47McCarthy like they you know not just for drafting him but they said no thanks on Aaron rogers they you know they they said hey no thanks on darnel coming back like it's time and i think ko's seen a lot of quarterbacks in his young career as a head coach and this could be the one he really likes and yeah they could this team's got potential i like the vikings i think they have such a variance because the quarterback is such a mystery they could be top 10 they could be bottom you know it's just yep um okay bangles they are officially dropping vomiting milk hyper junior is furious somewhere he's mad uh we're gonna put them against the chargers here bangles versus chargers bangles okay the stop the fall stops yeah they're not gonna they're not gonna do they're not gonna do what they did against the charges last year which was it was just such a dumb way to freaking lose a football game.

24:44I'll never forget that one. I mean, they should have died 15 times in that game, but they were just too good. So they just kept getting back in it. I think Burrow made a mistake actually at the end of the game, but yeah, yeah. So, so, uh, and then they, I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna McVay you on primetime football here, but uh but it just i need to see more from the chargers like everybody else man like that it took till this year for me to say okay like i think herbert is one of these dudes like he's got potential to be one of these dudes he's got all the tools there's nothing i don't like about his mental makeup it's nothing like that it's just the collection of circumstances and the way he's played has not added up to much.

25:35And Minner got a lot out of that defense last year. I was a little bit surprised, right? I worry about it. I don't know. On paper, it doesn't look great. There's a lot of holes. So if we're going to go Herbert and question mark defense against the Bengals who have been there, done that, been to a Super Bowl, got that guy under center, I'm taking the Bengals. Welcome to the top 12, Joe Burrow. Okay. If it was just you, Joe, if it was just you, you'd be in the top. This is not a quarterback ranking. This is a team ranking. Tell me when we get to the team that you were saying that you thought a team could have been in the top ten.

26:10Yeah, I will. I'm guessing it's not the Chargers. Chargers versus Bucs. I love the Bucs. Is that the team you were thinking of? One of them. I think the Bucs are a playoff team. Yeah, I love the Bucs. Bucs over Chargers then? Yeah, I put the Bucs over Chargers. I'm a big Baker Mayfield fan. um you know mike evans was remarking on the quality of that wide receiver room um they haven't really had a full deck yet in this chapter of bucks football like i want to see the whole group stay healthy um and you know todd bowles he he keeps a minute you know like i've written that guy off a few times and you know what he's been in the league a long time so i'm a i'm a fan of that group now the liam cohen thing like we'll find out we'll find out you know is it plug and play the one thing about baker has had he's had so many coordinators he really has and um i think they did a great job last year with him moving extending plays a little bit because he loves to play with timing but getting outside the pocket, making some magic.

27:20Thad Lewis was quarterback coach there, former teammate of mine. It's just a good – they got a good program down there. I have a Bucs take, which is if Hassan Reddick can return to form, I think this team runs away with the division because outside – because the edge is, once again, a question mark. Yeah. I like Diaby. He's not a number – he's not like a dominant one. A great two. A great two in my mind, yeah. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, you're right. I mean, a lot hinges on a guy who hasn't seemed real pressed to play football. All right. The Chargers have dropped a little bit. I'm going to go for the 14 spot, Chargers versus Niners.

28:07I'm just not real bullish on the Niners. I'm not real bullish on the Chargers on July 7th either. How far down you got the Bears? Not that far. Okay. But you have to take one of these two teams. I know. I'm just giving you a little foreshad. They're in the same tier. This is kind of the outside the top 10, everyone's flawed tier. Give me…

28:40Give me the Chargers, man.

28:46Okay. Chargers at 14. We're about to be out of the playoffs, aren't we? Yeah, this is where we're at. Now we're in the insult zone. Chris hates your team. Yeah, no. Yeah, make it last. Or maybe Mina waited a while. The Niners are still on the board. I saw where you ranked me on Mina's podcast. I'm going to be like, yo, that was because she had you. This is what I'm saying. You can blame me. I can blame you. I can be like, I would have had them earlier, Chris. I'm not going to do the Bears here. I'm going to throw in a team that I am tempted to put in the playoffs. And that's Cowboys. Cowboys are Niners, huh?

29:26Is that what we are right now? Yeah, Cowboys are Niners. Talk me through what you think of Dallas's issues in the run game defensively. Because I don't, is that going away? Remains a problem. Correct. My case is, well, first of all, I think Ibra Flues is a good coach. and I like how some of those players, I think Osa is going to have a good year in his scheme. I like some of the fit. Guys could get healthier. But for me, the case is I think this offense, if Pickens is anywhere close to what he can be, could be all gas because you got two legit number ones. You got a quarterback who likes to push the ball downfield.

30:01Defensively, you're so compromised dealing with both those guys. So I think they're not going to be the front runner allegations, but they can win a lot of games that way. Listen, I'll give you this, Mina. You know, if you kind of go point by point, Like, who's the more proven quarterback? I mean, this is almost like a political debate when you talk about Brock Purdy or Dak Prescott. But, like, I think Dak Prescott gets a lot of – but I like Dak. And I like Purdy, too. But we're just starting to find out what it's like, how the other half lives, right? Like, you come in the league, you know, like, hey, hard road to the league being a late-round guy and everything.

30:44but you walk into a situation like that, it's a pretty good situation. And things have slowly changed a little bit to the point where I think they probably tinker with their offense a little bit this year. I like Dak. I like Pickens and the, what did you say, the potential. That's a pretty variable situation. I'll give you the Cowboys, yeah. Okay. Wow. Cowboys over Niners, you're ready for first take? Yeah. Yeah, exactly. All right. The Niners have fallen. Chris Long hates your team, but don't worry. He's going to have a chance to make it into the top 16 after the break. The greats don't shy away from change.

The Niners are still on the board, and I'm going to bring in the team here that you mentioned earlier, which is the Chicago Bears.

32:44Now they're in the same tier to me. Yeah. I like the Bears this year. I really do. It's one of the situations where last year I felt like I was making a case against Caleb as being what people thought he was, which is like an immediate plug-and-play. Like it's just going to work immediately in Chicago. They're going to win. I said they win nine games. People thought I punched a baby and that's not what happened at all. I just look at the fact that, you know, he was a guy that came out of college and wasn't playing with timing and has otherworldly talent and that sort of thing. But the bears as a whole didn't look like the super team people were making them out to be.

33:25And I think that proved itself out on the field. Also the offense and the, and the head coach, I mean, they, they struggled. I mean, it was, you know, Waldron, Waldron, that experiment completely failed. That's a terrible situation to walk into as a quarterback. And the game management, for instance, at the end of the Lions game, like that quarterback was playing in peril last year. And I think he showed a lot of grace and leadership. And I think he showed a lot of toughness. I think a lot of people don't like the kid because he's a high pick and because he's a little different than other people.

33:57Like he carries himself a little bit different. But in the ways that I would judge a quarterback and a teammate, so far he looks like a pro quarterback. and I'm excited to see his development. And I think they, some additions on the offensive line will pay off and some on the defensive line as well. I'm excited about this group. So we're going bears over Niners. Yes, we are. Interesting. I'm excited too. Okay. Not let's, I'm going to do a divisional matchup here. I'm going to do a team that I like better than a lot of people, Arizona Cardinals versus the San Francisco 49ers. NFC West showdown?

34:38I'll go Niners. It's not that I don't like the Cardinals. I don't think they can be a tough out, as evidenced by a lot of situations last year. I mean, they gave the Bills hell early in the season. Was that last year that they beat the Cowboys? They beat up the Cowboys? Yeah, because they're just such a good running team. I respect the team. Respect to your team. I just, I can't bury the Niners. They've been through too much. They have to earn being kicked off into the abyss, the bottom 12 or so. I can't do that to this team. It'd be interesting head-to-head because the Niners offseason was so oriented towards fixing their run defense, right, in the draft.

35:26And it's clearly a priority for Robert Sala, and I feel like the Cardinals are just the perfect test in that way. No question. They're physical. I'm going to stay in the NFC West. This reflects my view of the NFC West, which is I think that they've got the Rams and then everyone else is basically the same to me, to be honest. That's how I view them so closely clustered. Cardinals versus Seahawks. I think you could go either way here. I think the Seahawks are going to be better than people think. I think the defense is going to be better than people think. And that's a tough – I mean, listen, and haven't played there a bunch.

36:02And Mina knows this, being one of the 12s, the 12s are insane when the defense is playing well, and that is a tough place to play. So I'm going to give the nod to the Seahawks. Yeah, I like the head man too. Did you know the Seahawks defense led the NFL in three and outs last year? And they didn't play well early in the season. Getting the linebacker spot right for them was a big deal. A little bit of a corner depth issue maybe this year, but at the top, they're pretty good out there. So, yeah, I like the Seahawks. Cardinals versus Steelers here, 19. Steelers took a while. I'm going to give the Steelers the benefit of the doubt here just because I can see them getting these three tight end sets.

36:56You got Johnny Smith, like maybe they're maybe they raise the floor of the offense a little bit like they don't need to have a super high ceiling. I also don't see the corner room is like, hey, it's as sure a thing as everybody else thinks.

37:12Right. Defensive line should be really stout, but you've also got an aging core. You know, love the speed of linebacker. Right. Right. And offensively, you know, again, like you just have to find an identity where you're actually running the ball with efficiency. You don't have a lot of guys outside. You do have your guy DK Metcalf from Seattle who will be on the wrong side of the red line at some point this year. And I haven't mentioned Rodgers yet, who if I'm given the most measured take I can. With all due respect to the man. Coming off an Achilles. Well, I've never had to do it. A lot of times we formulate a projection of who the player is going to be a year out and then two years out because two years is always better, right?

37:58But we don't usually go off of a 41, 42-year-old man going through this process. And so while it's fair weather to say, hey, like, I think he's going to be – there were times in the pocket that he didn't look real healthy last year, and his arm, he still throws the piss out of a back shoulder fade. he still he he can still throw a dart over the middle of the field i know those fades though yeah no yeah exactly the timing on yeah now they they like uh who is it the second year guy that was heard oh ronan wilson ronan wilson yeah yeah so so i think it could be one of these groups that kind of steps up um i also am interested to see like how are they going to carry this that carry this thing because since he left green bay and probably at different points in green bay it felt like his show right and he earned that right as a as a hall of fame quarterback to to throw his weight around but i want to see what it looks like when arthur smith is like hey every look's not going to be exactly the way you want it you know we're going to get to play action you know a certain way we're going to we're going to call the game a certain way we're going to we're going to do certain things that maybe you're not real comfortable with and you have to dust off some of the old habits but i want to see it where it's not like he walks in he sets the entire menu because he deserves to have a lot of say in it.

39:14But, you know, Tomlin's the type of coach that it's not going to be like Rodgers getting his way at every turn. The Cardinals are still on the board. And here I'm going to bump up a team. Last week I had them lower. The New England Patriots. Patriots. Oh! I believe in the Patriots. I know they're super low on this power ranking. That's not that low for the Pats. I think 20. I think that's pretty – I think they could be cagey. Cagey. By cagey, I mean fringy. We think in a big defensive league, Barmore back in the mix with Milton Williams, Ray Ball. I'm jumping out of the – That hand corner duo in the NFL maybe.

39:59Keon White. Keon White. You know, it's Paul Lane with his – Yeah, sneaky signing. His advisor. and then I just I think the quarterback's going to be pretty good I don't know how soon but really when you have Mike Vrabel as a coach the identity of his football teams they find ways to win they really do in that way the Patriot way continues because that's what Bill was great about was every week they'd find a way to win and be a different kind of angle that he would throw at you the team you know they say the Patriot way you're stuck in a way the way is to be malleable and um I think for Vrabel's team we always talk about these Vrabel spots where it's like oh I just feel like they're an eight-point dog but they're gonna muddy this thing up they're gonna they're gonna be and I think he'll be able to keep Diggs under control like Diggs was pretty well behaved last year in Houston right I mean he got hurt Cardi B just took him off the gram I saw that that's okay he'll be okay okay i've enjoyed the uh pop culture like people don't follow football learning who stefan digs is through this experience oh yeah pretty pretty good wide receiver uh and like the famous vikings video of him recirculating as yeah oh yeah wait is he not a good boyfriend yeah well there's something to it i don't know the dudes in the locker room are pretty quick to answer digs uh I know I like digs I like May I like the bats um I like this pick okay Cardinals

41:35versus Falcons Falcons oh Cardinals are dropping is this more that you like you like the Falcons you gotta yeah I think Penix uh I think Penix is gonna have a year I do I think there's a lot of people in Atlanta have been waiting a long time for it to feel like winning football and um you know guys that have been there a couple years and and been through the ups and downs and then last year to go through the cousins thing where clearly he's not well and yeah no i mean it's recording he's uh remind me by the time you listen to this but i don't think he you know i don't know that he's going to be able to overcome what he's got going on down there.

42:20So it's Benick's time. Okay. Cardinals versus... I'm deciding between two teams, both in Florida. Let's go Cardinals versus Dolphins here. Cardinals.

42:41Not buying the Darren Waller revival? No, like Darren Waller, fantastic player in his prime. it's definitely like late. I don't, I think their best path to being competitive defensively is the edges playing really well and staying healthy, right? Like I like their edge group, but they got to stay healthy. I think offensively they're the same team. They're a team that's going to be able to run it up on bad teams. But when you play a good defense, like the, the floor goes down. It just does, and the ceiling goes way down too. I feel like at this point, I'm officially, you can't say beating a dead horse.

43:30That is not an okay thing to say. Whatever the - I'm going to bail you out here. Whatever the less antiquated version of that saying is, is the Dolphins don't win big games against - Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. You thought I was talking about something else. i thought you're going something you can edit that out if you want what is the expression beating a dead horse from by the way like i don't know dead horses it was like in the 1800s when a horse did something bad and they were like kill that horse and then and then somebody just kept kicking him and somebody was like hey horse is dead carl enough but i've been but it is at this point at this point i've been standing around i've been standing over this horse for four years the Dolphins and it feels vindictive at this point, but like, I hate having to explain it.

44:23Yeah. Well, it's, I think the biggest question is, are they actually trying to beat the allegations, you know, and offensively it feels like they're making some efforts with the offensive line, but I, I, moving on from Johnny didn't really make sense to me, to be honest. So this episode is brought to you by Facebook. So you were scrolling on marketplace and there it was, the bike you'd been searching for. 45:51What propels you? Propel with Gatorade Electrolytes. Okay, well, the Dolphins are still on the board, and here I'm going to bring in the Jacksonville Jaguars. Interesting team to me.

46:10Pondering. I'll take the Jags. what do you think about uh travis kelsey saying that when he's on defense they're just gonna offenses would try to wear him out purposefully to make him tired well if he plays both ways yeah i mean like you just run him down the field yeah just run him down the field i mean hey travis knows man you know they probably have done that they probably have done that to somebody you know like not that he played on the other side of the ball but like when you know you take guy out of a game and just have him run cardio. This is the thing, like, right, with defense is, like, they can't control – with offense, they can say, okay, Travis, you do this, this, and this.

46:51Defense is a reactive – cornerback is a reactive position. And, like, this is why the whole experiment, I think people have just been blowing past a lot of the realities of it. I'm excited about it, but, like, there's so much that's being underestimated, I think. Dude, here's the worst. Like, it clearly would be one of the biggest anomalies and not just NFL history, like sports history. There's not a lot of guys that can play both sides of the ball at a high level in the NFL, right? You're a baseball player. Like, I know it never happens, but dudes grow up who are great pitchers and also hit bombs.

47:23Like, you know, they don't let them do it. Shohei does it at the highest level. People go nuts. They should. If Travis Hunter could play it, like, in the range of a Pro Bowl player on both sides of the football, like, come on. And so you give this take, which is totally reasonable, which is it ain't going to happen. And if by the offhand chance it happens, we're going to have a bunch of people saying, I told you so, you idiot. It's not a dumb take. It's the, it's like saying when it rains, the ground gets wet. It seems that obvious it's raining outside. It seems that obvious to me that it's not going to happen, but maybe I'm wrong.

47:59Maybe he's going to be, I want it to happen. I've, I've, it is literally one of my favorite players to watch in college football ever, but I don't want to, I don't want them to mess him up, trying to develop them at two positions okay dolphins are still on the board i'm gonna go dolphins versus raiders here raiders i think the raiders might be a little tough out a little bit risky offense i like this ski i like this often risky if they can avoid those red zone turnovers which seem to plague remind me yep um yep you got okay dolphins are still on the board we're down to the bottom seven this is where it gets really froggy it gets icky dolphins versus colts dolphins yeah

48:57yeah all right colts and their unknown quarterback versus i'm gonna i've i tried this last week and and ryan rejected me over and over and over again i'm I'm going to bring the Panthers in here. Panthers. Yes. He rejected you. He kept saying, no, no, no. He kept picking the other team. This is about where I brought in the Panthers last week and they kept falling. See, I think Bryce is going to play well this year. I think he's going to play better. You know who I think also people are just sleeping on how important it is to have Derek Brown back on this team. No question. He was a totally underrated player.

49:39Just happens to play in Carolina. All right.

49:47Colts versus Giants. Giants. Really? Okay, so you're pretty low on the Colts. Let's talk about it when we get to them. It's more that I don't think about the Colts. You know what I'm saying? Well, it's going to be a rough August. That's the only quarterback competition we have, so you're going to have to talk about it a lot. It's a funny year. um but talk about the Giants because I is this a defense thing because I actually snuck the Giants defense into my top 10 solely based on that defensive line there's a good coach in that building I really still believe day ball day bowl however I mean should I played for him and I still haven't figured out how people prefer saying his name Brian Dable is how I used to say it that's how I say it okay some people call it day ball day ball have you heard that before like like it's french or something people getting pretty liberal with these names branding whatever they want um but coach dable is a good football coach he happens to have had a he was in a bad marriage you know it just didn't work and um he's got one last chance and i think between jackson dart who i think actually i'm a little bullish on and Russell Wilson and that defense and a really spectacular wide receiver, some young players like Tracy.

51:18Like, I don't hate this team. I mean, we're talking about this on the NFC East preview. Oh, I guess this is coming out after the NFC preview. So I just talked about this. I just don't know, as an offensive line, how you deal with Dexter Lawrence and three dominant edges. Like, that is just – you just – It's going to be tough. Yeah, it's a really, really, really challenging thing to deal with. It's going to be tough. It's even more reason that when you're the commanders, you're happy you went out and got Tunsil. Yeah. This division is going to be fun. The floor has been raised considerably. Okay, the Colts dropped.

52:00We have five more spots. I'm going to go Colts versus Jets here, the other New York team.

52:12You look like my kid when I'm trying to feed him right now for the audio audience.

52:19Jets. And right there, you look like my kid when he does eat it, and then he looks at me and he just lets the food dribble out of his mouth. Yeah. You could do that. It's the worst. It's the most. My daughter did it this morning. Makes me so angry. Yeah. He looks me in the eye and just goes, and then like lets it fall out. She gets up from the bean bag, walks up to the dinner table, says potato. I put a potato in her hand. She puts it in her mouth. She spits it out, goes back to the bean bag, rinse and repeat. All of dinner. It's the defiance, really. Yeah. Okay, so the potato that came out of your mouth was the New York Jets over the Colts.

52:53A little spicy. Dude, what do people expect the Colts to be this year? When you look at the win totals, which is something I look at from time to time, um the Colts they're seven and a half win team right that's what Vegas thinks um you know the difference between the seven and a half win team and a four and a half win team I mean you know it's it's here and there and the four and a half win teams are the Saints the Browns like this team is a hiccup away from being at the bottom you said it we don't know who the quarterback is like let me make a defense for the Colts I like I kind of like the new and Remo higher coupled with some the free agents that they brought in cam bynum trevarius board i think that the defense could be better but yeah the quarterback situation makes it totally defensible to drop him because who the heck knows it's tough because i i you know like i i don't know anthony richardson was not throwing off a platform like has not figured out how to play with technique and i don't have to be a quarterback to realize that you could see it and daniel jones this would be a huge deal if he was able to revive his career in this setting.

54:00Since we didn't do Jets talk though, I do want before we move on quickly. Do you think Aaron Glenn can get this Jets defense back anywhere close to what they were before they completely imploded? I think it's, I think it's as much about how the offense plays. I think that's a group that just the attrition of every game saying, Hey, like sudden change we're out there all day like just i've been there on on teams like that where it's like we got a good group here what's like there's another team remaining that is very much had to deal with that yeah one of the final few teams i'm not going to get to them next so i'm going to do the titans next so titans versus colts i'd rather take a flyer on the titans

54:50wow hey i'm gonna be on the colts like like highlight video if they make the playoffs but good on yeah no no i i yeah from here on out it's gonna be the colts well so yeah the team that i was talking about is the team i'm gonna bring in next and that's the browns the team where you could just the defense was just exhausted right just completely drained unfortunately uh it does not appear that reinforcements are coming in this year colts versus browns give me the colds

55:30okay so the final two teams are the browns and the saints i just want to take a beat because i barely talked about these teams last time um which team do you think has a better chance of being superior this year, the Browns or the Saints?

55:47Browns play in tougher division. Saints might not be trying to win. I don't know. Man, oh, man. I think the Browns. They still have a dominant unit. Maybe not dominant, but. When you have a player like Myles Garrett, Like, I know it's not, you know, Ty goes to the team with Myles Garrett. Ty goes to the team. How much do you think, let's be optimistic for a second. Let's say something nice. How much do you think having Mason Graham, who's their fifth overall draft pick, could help Myles Garrett? Because they really haven't gotten any interior pass rush. No, if he can play, that's great. And I didn't like people roasting his aura because of how he looked walking into the facility the first day as a rookie with black tennis shoes and awkwardly mid-length socks and starter mesh shorts.

56:48They really don't go with the current fashion sensibility in America, the length of those shorts. And then his bag work, people said he looked tired. But I think none of that matters. I want to see him put a helmet on and play football. I think if this kid can play, that's a welcome reinforcement. I think you're obviously going to miss JOK. I think about somebody who is low-key, one of the better backers in the league, but also somebody that kind of made that defense go outside of the main culprit there on the edge. He was one of them. All right, so the Saints, once again, are the worst team in the NFL, according to our power rankings.

57:29But you know what I love about Saints fans? Aramok's my favorite fan bases. I like all NFC South fans. I've decided. I think that they're like my favorite fans. I like all the fans. I don't like all the fans. After holding this up. AMC East fans, NFC East fans are very mean and large fan bases. But Saints fans are very funny because I think they're just so glad that their team isn't trying to win anymore. And I respect it. Here's the deal. If we were power ranking fan bases, Saints are up there. I have never had a more hospitable time than when taking an LSU game or a Saints football game or just spending time in New Orleans.

58:09They're up there. Let me take a minute to say nice things about the one or two fan bases whose teams we just on a little bit. I also would like to say that people in Indianapolis are known to be very nice. I love your WNBA team and the race cars. I also think the Pacers were great this year. and uh who else did who else did we kind of the browns rock and roll hall of fame huh okay wait i'm gonna read you the entire list and i want you to tell me now that you i i you had to make this list using my parameters who is a team you think should be higher or maybe yeah you're looking at and you got some regrets okay pull that look up top to We're going Eagles, Ravens, Chiefs, Spills, Commanders, Lions, Texans, Packers, Rams, Broncos, Vikings, Bengals, Bucks, Chargers, playoffs, Cowboys, Bears, Niners, Seahawks, Steelers, Patriots, Falcons, Cardinals, Jaguars, Raiders, Dolphins, Panthers, Giants, Jets, Titans, Colts, Browns, and Saints.

59:14So I think the Patriots could end up being higher, as I mentioned. I think they're a team that could be, let's not get crazy here, but a wild card contending team. I also think the Steelers have a ceiling in that like seven or eight range. Yeah, but they could be higher. I agree. But chances are they're going to be closer to where you put them, we put them, sorry. The Bears, I think, have some upside this year. I think you can tell, listen to me talk, they have some upside i think the panthers it's a little disrespectful to have them in the bottom six i think wow and i also think the bucks are a proper like contending team like i you know oops i don't one thing bucks have going for them is they have played the eagles tough year in a year out and if you want to win in the nfc and make that run like who are the teams in the nfc that the bucks walk into a season at this juncture and say hey we can't beat them.

1:00:14I... They've gone toe-to-toe with the Lions. Yeah. No, I mean, the Bucs to me, again, like, if you have a dominant offensive line, I'm never going to count you out, and they have a dominant offensive line. Yeah. I think the team that the fan base said is going to be the angriest at you is probably... Can't be the Steelers at you, because I brought them in a little bit late. I think the Bengals dropping to 12, because I think I introduced them around, and that was the big dropper to my eye. If Bengals fans, what I just told you is your team's going to make the playoffs, but they're not going to win the division.

1:00:44And you deserve something more than that after last year. I think you understand my disdain for that brand of football that you guys have kind of come upon playing. And the head man, he's got to coach better, man. They got to execute better. All right. Well, that is the list for this week. Thank you so much, Chris. Check out the excellent Greenlight podcast all summer long. You're doing off-season episodes. And I will be back with another division preview coming at you at NFC North.
