In short

Week 17 NFL recap on “Mean and Kind,” focusing on winners/woofs, MVP debate, and playoff seeding implications.

Guests

None named in the transcript. The hosts are Lenny (referred to as “lenny”) and Dominique (referred to as “Dominique”).

Key claims

  • Brock Purdy (49ers) was a top winner: efficient, hit explosive plays, and made off-structure runs; the offense exploited the Bears’ defense with under-center looks, motion, and downfield shot plays.
  • Matthew Stafford (Rams) had a “stinker” with multiple interceptions, but the hosts downplay injury excuses and frame it as a veteran QB variance/pressure issue.
  • MVP discussion: Christian McCaffrey’s case is “unique” (impact on a top team, not just QB stats); Justin Herbert is arguable but hard to beat Drake Maye’s numbers.
  • Malik Willis (Bears) is intriguing as a dual-threat passer/athlete despite a loss; his deep-ball accuracy and scrambling stood out.
  • Derrick Henry (Ravens) is a winner: Packers run defense couldn’t stop him; Ravens stacked the box and succeeded.
  • Woofs: Steelers offense looked limited and unpleasant without DK Metcalf; Baker Mayfield/Bucs lost close games via interceptions and inability to run; Josh Allen had a bad game vs Eagles cover-3 and lacked outside threats.

Notable examples

  • Purdy’s goal-line “dance” run; Mac Jones’ early pick-six vs later Purdy effectiveness.
  • Stafford/Rams missing key OL and Devonta(e) Adams; Falcons pass rush/pressure.
  • Willis: 11-for-12 for 177 yards vs single-high; deep seam-ball to Watson.
  • Henry: 36 carries, 216 yards, four TDs; power runs near the goal line.
  • Steelers: DK Metcalf taken out; punt decisions criticized.
  • Baker: late-game interception vs Panthers; deep-ball interception issues; Bucs rushing drop-off (Bucky Irving).

0:33welcome back to the mean and kind show featuring lenny we are here to recap a very interesting and impactful week 17 uh we're not really in time with the monday night game a little bit because it ended up being kind of interesting and ultimately impactful in a different way but we're going to do a super-sized winners and wolves to talk about the biggest winners of this weekend And Brock Purdy, spoiler alert, one of them. The biggest woofs, Steelers, woof. I guess Matthew Stafford is probably a woof because... I didn't anticipate it when we were talking about our winners and wolves before the Monday Night Game.

1:15I was like, yeah, that's going to be an easy win. But yeah, kind of... Everybody's making it about MVP, and I get it because obviously it will definitely impact the MVP, tight MVP race between him and Drake. I was already Drake May, I think, a few weeks ago. I said he was my pick, but I was going to wait and see. It seems like these MVP votes do tend to be weighted towards the end of the season, and big games and island games will impact it. I'm going to do an entire awards pod, though, as I do every year at the end of the season where I talk about the major awards and my thinking. Can I ask you a little bit of a weird question?

1:51I know you like to stick to the script, you know, like going off script. There's no script. Is there any argument for a more unique MVP candidacy? So, I mean, Christian McCaffrey is more unique. I mean, honestly, by saying more unique, I'm thinking not quarterback on a top-rated team. And I guess the Rams are no longer top-ranked. So I'm thinking of Justin Herbert. Making an argument that their value is not only in the statistics. It's like you look at it and you say, oh, shit. this team is really or this player is really impacting this team i am sympathetic to the mccaffrey case and that's actually one i'm going to work through i think on the pod especially um thinking about the niners and what they did and why they did it and who matters the most and who's been so like i it's undeniably you know his impact is undeniable uh garrett case doesn't resonate with me because the teams do um herbert i think you know you can absolutely make a case i the numbers aren't there but the numbers aren't there i think it's just hard because may the numbers are so overwhelmingly in his favor and really the only case against him is the schedule thing which i'll get into but don't yell at me pats fans i'm gonna get into it i'm gonna get into it i like the cmc argument though that's an interesting one to me and um yeah he's been absolutely spectacular for them uh okay well that's a good transition well no sorry we should talk about the game briefly i guess this is the only way i'll put it because um i think this This is the big thing I want to ask you.

3:28Matthew Stafford, you know, meltdown performance. I think it's fair to say some very bad interceptions. The nine, the Rams had a lot of injuries coming into this one. Offensively, it felt like they caught up with them as well. I don't think that's why he threw the interceptions. They were actually, I think all of them, he was clean. If I remember correctly, but they were missing their left tackle. Kevin Alaric Jackson, their starting guard, Kevin Dotson. You did feel that impact in moments. I think the absence of Devontae Adams, too, was felt in this one because the Falcons did a good job taking out Puka Nakua for a lot of the game.

4:03Some of that was, you know, then he had the plays call back due to penalties. But let me ask you this. Is this to me, to you, just like, every now and then Matthew Stafford has one of these stinkers where he just throws a bunch of interceptions? Or do you look at this and feel any substantive concern headed into the postseason? yeah i mean i um i i hate to do like one of the cliche cop-outs but like both things can be true which is i i i think both is how i feel honestly it's like this was i could see matt stafford not having another game like this but for the entire playoffs and i could also see this as a reminder that you know this is in the realm of possibilities and he could have a game like that again i think The injury conversation is obviously interesting.

4:49Of course, you have less talent, but it's so hard to have the injury conversation when you're talking about teams and football because, I mean, everybody's got them. It's if your offense is, or if your team, I guess, the way that you want to play is focused around a particular player, I think it matters a lot more. And if you don't have the flexibility, like this is the reason why you have a quarterback like Matt Stafford is you're supposed to be able to withstand these injuries. And to your point, the injuries weren't the reason for the bad play. But when you have a quarterback like this, a veteran quarterback who's won a Super Bowl, like these are the games you're supposed to be able to put away.

5:31Yeah, I think this I am chalking this up to he just has these games in him. And even years, even the Super Bowl year, nobody remembers them, but you can point to. I remember that one that he threw in the playoffs that the 49ers dropped off his chest. I bring it up to Charlie on my show once every few weeks as a reminder that that the outcomes are still a little bit random. Yeah. And this is to me always been he has two weaknesses. he can get affected by pressure and i almost wonder if the interceptions kind of flows from that like the even though he was clean like maybe the fear of being hit the falcons pass rush is good now like they they really get after it and they have playmakers on the back end it's a it's a flawed team but um the defense at least feels like it's trending in the right direction and they've got some really difficult decisions to make next year on the other side of the ball and And we'll get to those, you know.

6:29But yeah, I just think. More impactfully, those decisions. Upstairs are the decisions that they need to be made. There's a lot. Yeah. It's, I actually, I mean, this was actually, you know, for the Falcons, obviously the season is over. But it's a pretty, it is funny because they, that's got so mad at me. I posted that they gave Stafford, Allen, and Drake May trouble. And obviously Drake May was much better than the other quarterbacks and they won that game. But it wasn't about Drake May. It was about this defense. They have shown the ability to rise up, as their slogan is, against good quarterbacks.

7:08And I think Jeff Ulbricht's done a pretty good job. But yeah, it's a tricky one for them. For the Rams, though, really quick. This is impactful because if they had won out, they would have locked up the five seed. Obviously, they don't have a chance at the one seed or winning the division anymore. The five seed gets to play the winner of the NFC South. I mean, that's a benefit for most teams, but the Rams seem to struggle with the NFC South. Right, the Rams lost to the Panthers, I know, right, yeah. But it is notable because, I mean, I understand the loss of the Panthers. I would much rather play the NFC South than the Eagles defense.

7:43We're going to get to the Eagles offense, but the Eagles defense is legit, and they're very, very scary and good. And now, the way things are for L.A., if Seattle wins, they're locked into the five seed. Assuming they win. assuming they beat the Cardinals and take care of business week 18 and McVay has said he's going to play the starters which is also interesting by the way because he doesn't he's very conservative about that so if Seattle wins Seattle gets the one seed the Niners get the six seed Niners fans if you're wondering why it goes past head-to-head division into a common opponent which trumps conference record okay if Seattle loses Seattle gets the five seed and the Rams drop regardless of outcomes so this wasn't I it's I know everybody said seating doesn't matter and it's it's over confident to try to pick your opponent we have this conversation but I'm sorry you'd rather play have you guys watched NFC South football lately like the Bucks and the Panthers specifically yeah especially after this weekend I would much rather play those teams no I absolutely agree with you like yeah I don't think that you should go out and try to to like um engineer anything to happen like you go and you try to win all your games but But, yeah, it seems that it lines up perfectly that winning last week's game or Monday's game would have really helped them to get it easier.

9:00Like, the Eagles is not something you want to deal with, especially that offense. The interesting one would be if the Niners win, then the game doesn't matter because then they're not going to get the five seed. Seattle's locked in. And the Niners game, that game is Saturday. so I I suspect if that happens McVay may play as starters but then pull them quickly so all right um Falcons fans you know I'm gonna offseason I'm gonna do a kind of offseason look at all the teams that missed the playoffs um it's tough because it is like they threw everything at fixing the pass rush and they did and then the other side fell apart and it was it's just I We'll see what happens with the front office and coach.

9:50I suspect we're going to get a new coach next year despite this win. They've got some really difficult decisions to make. They've got to make decisions about Kirk Cousins, who you saw in this game. Now you're shaking your head. I get it. It's just, it's not a, I mean, that doesn't feel like a very heavy decision. Like it seems like the other decisions that they need to make are the bigger ones. Like I'm not shaking my head because Kirk Cousins isn't, didn't look okay last night. It's just like Kirk Cousins isn't the answer for this team going forward. B. John Robinson is your best player. So I think everything has to be oriented towards putting him in a position to succeed.

10:37He's so freaking good. I enjoyed how much you could tell. I love when the Falcons do get night games because the announcers are always, you could tell, just stunned by how good he is. Not surprised, but you could feel Aikman at various points in this game at almost like a loss for words watching him. There was one play, obviously he had a lot of explosive runs, but there was one that was like a three-yard gain. That was like the sickest three-yard gain I've ever seen. I know exactly which one you're talking about, but I think it was down in the red zone, the play that stood out to me, where it looked like he had the hole and he had the safety coming down, and he made an inside cut on the safety when it was completely unnecessary and made four or five more yards.

11:26That's the thing that stands out to me for running backs. The big runs, yeah, they're impressive, but when you can get three more out of a play, it changes everything. Xavier Watts had a great interception. Good young safety. AG Terrell played well. So there's definitely like the bones here for. That Puka catch that wasn't a catch too. Like I just feel like it needs to be referenced. I know it wasn't a catch. It wasn't a catch. If that had been a catch, it would have been one of the best catches I've ever seen in my life. The best part is that if it were like the only reason why it wasn't a catch was because he was out of bounds.

12:04He still regained possession after he got knocked out of his hand, after he caught it with one hand. Okay, that was longer on Monday night than I promised. So we're going to do winners first, and my first winner is Brock Purdy. And won the shootout with Chicago. Could have had either quarterback. If it had gone Chicago's way, I would have put Caleb Williams. Caleb Williams, some of the throws he made in that game, my God. But Brock Purdy was excellent. Brock Purdy was efficient. Brock Purdy hit the explosive plays. Brock Purdy made the plays outside of structure that show you what makes him different from other Niners quarterbacks in this offense.

12:48Plays with his legs, obviously the one at the goal line where he did a little dance, multiple dances after. It was, I thought, you know. That was the only time that he looked uncomfortable, honestly. I thought he got to it eventually. Yeah. But it wasn't premeditated. It was Dougie, but he did a couple moves on the way to Dougie. It was like a Euro step, a side-to-side into a, I don't know, let's Dougie. And I liked it ultimately, but he didn't feel comfortable. It mattered, obviously, because the Niners' defense was so bad. They needed every single one of those 40-plus points, and that's got to be the case, honestly, moving forward.

13:28Like they need these performances from Purdy. It was an interesting offensive performance, Dominique, because headed into that game on NFL Live, I think I'm probably sure I talked about it on the show too. I was saying how the Niners versus the Bears, Kyle Shanahan versus Ben Johnson is kind of like Kyle Shanahan versus old Kyle Shanahan, right? Because with the Bears offense, very under center, outside zone run, play actioning off of that. But then the Niners kind of went back to the old Niners in this game. It was a lot of shot plays off of play action, downfield, from those under center condensed looks, motion.

14:09I think they just saw something in the Bears defense that he knew he could exploit. It'll be interesting to see if they do that without Seattle. But the point is, Purdy, to me, you just see why he's such a good quarterback for the Kyle Shannon offense, because whatever the offense is, however it's morphed over the years, he has shown an ability to execute it. And then in the moments where he has to go above and beyond, make those plays. Yeah. I mean, the above and beyond part is the part that was, I think it's always worth commending for Purdy because normally a guy who has that ability is someone who we convince ourselves to draft earlier than he went.

14:46And there's been this like delayed. And I mean, part of it was because he, like a lot of young quarterbacks isn't like that great right off the the bat but like you've seen his impact even with mac jones having a good season at quarterback you see when purdy comes in how much more effective they are especially in like tight man coverage situations it's uh it's a different offense as good as mac was and i think purdy's a perfect person to be like the first winner we talk about because this season's been given how mac jones started and given he's Mr. Irrelevant, given he got the big contract, there was a little rumble.

15:24There was a little rumble about what's going on, and he just balls and threw a pick six to start this game, and then came back to just kill the rest of the game. It was awesome. Would you be nervous signing Mac or trying to trade for he's under contract? First of all, I don't think the Niners should trade Mac Jones because Purdy, we love him, he's been injured. and if not for Mac Jones, they wouldn't be in this position to play for Week 18 in the one seed. I mean, I think you would probably agree that it depends on what teams are offering, right? It's crazy. I wouldn't offer – I mean, I just – Yeah.

16:02Trading for a quarterback from a Kyle Shanahan offense feels like not smart. I'm saying that because as good as Mac Jones was, this offense is so good. No, I get it. I mean, going back and watching some of the shots and how he got to them, and it feels like he's playing chess and you just see all the players being moved and the ability to manipulate defenses and the way he uses McCaffrey, and it's just masterful. But Purdy was excellent, and he's going to have to be. I mean, we're going to preview, obviously, week 18. Thank God we've got three good games. Well, two games, good games and three meaningful games.

16:42I'm going to do the analytics telecast for the Seahawks 49ers game. It's the first time I'm doing a game. So you got to give me some tips. Wait, really? Yeah. So we have, you know, we have that simulcast thing. I think Dan O is doing it for, or has done it before and is, and is probably doing the Monday night game or something. So there's a Saturday game, the 49ers and the Seahawks and I'm going to do it. That's awesome, dude. Oh my gosh. I didn't know that. That's super exciting. I know, um, Seth Walters working on that too. He's doing the fourth down stuff. So. I need to call you so you can teach me.

17:18You've done games before. Those have been really fun. Are you doing with Kekley? Um, no, I think I'm doing it with Hasselbeck. I think I, they want to have like a defense offense. Great. That'll be great. Uh, it's, we should talk ahead of that game. Cause I'm already starting my prep. Kashi Ann versus Mike McDonald is. I was looking back at some of my notes because they played in week one, which is so long ago, and pretty played in that game. Last year, it was like week 11 or whatever, was the first year of Mike McDonald, and it felt like finally they had answers for the Shanahan offense. You remember it was 20-17.

17:59The Seahawks won that game. Gino was quarterback. This year was a low-scoring game. that Purdy had a luckiest touchdown to win it. I mentioned this stat on NFL Live. The Bears and Niners pass rushes in this game, this is from NGS, had the lowest combined quick pressure rate. Because you've got to look at quick pressure with Caleb and Purdy too because pressure rate is a lie because they hold on to the football and extend. The lowest combined quick pressure rate in this game of any game since 2022, the beginning of 2022. too. Defenses stink. It's going to be a much quicker challenge. All right.

18:41Brock Purdy, great game. Niners offense. Buzzsaw. Christian McCaffrey, MVP candidate. I'll talk about it later. Who is your first winner? We can go with Malik Willis, I guess, even though they lost. I think it's a little bit of a rain on the parade because I also saw the numbers you were talking about for the Bears pass rush, and then you also say that the Ravens pass rush is also not very good. So Malik Willis had a couple of games this season back-to-back that were really, really impressive. He did so much well, but he was rarely under pressure unless it was like extending plays, like pressure that he invited.

19:23So I would say ultimately what he did that was so impressive in both of the games, and he didn't start the Bears game. He came in midway through the second quarter after Love got hurt. But he hit the deep balls. And it's a recurring theme, it feels like, for young quarterbacks who play well. It's the combination of – I mean, I don't want to say elite athleticism because there's like Josh Allen level of athleticism. But it's a combination of like super high-end – I think he's an elite athlete. I'm going back to some of his runs. I mean, I always tell somebody about him, but like, holy smokes, he is a great scrambler.

20:01The combination of that elite athleticism and the deep ball accuracy. It's like, it's so, so impressive. And for him to come from where he came at Tennessee, you look at those stats, you look at those games to what he did in this game against the Ravens. Of course, they lost in one turnover, which is a snap off of his face mask, which wasn't his fault. Of course, they lost in a game, but like he felt like almost perfect, except for the shoulder injury like yeah that's he came out there and the team kind of fell apart you you hit on I think what we think about what are teams getting in him potentially and how do you build an offense around him I think you hit on what makes him so exciting which is because of his rushing threat and what he adds to defenses are very frightened of it and you get that Eagles thing where he gets a lot of single high and then he can kill you outside the numbers in the game against the Ravens they played single high and close to 60 percent you know you're selling out to stop the run obviously and versus single high he went 11 for 12 for 177 yards that said I've been really impressed too by some of the throws he makes between the numbers I mean he he's throws a beautiful goal ball we've seen that we saw it last year too in moments but uh it was to Watson where he hit the it was like a seam ball versus he split the safeties and that was a beautiful throw Now, he is primarily throwing outside the numbers at this point, but there's enough there, I think, between the athleticism and the accuracy throwing downfield and the continued development he's shown as a passer for a team to be intrigued by what he's put on tape.

21:40I'm not saying, you know, he's perfect or whatever, but there's definitely enough there. I mean, I think you're right. Yeah, it's super exciting. And I think you're right. Like it feels like the younger quarterbacks want to stay away from the middle of the field. It's like a dangerous place. But I think even the way that he was attacking the outside of the field, like the timing and the arm strength were impressive. Like he was converting on second and like 12s and 15s because he, his timing was perfect for someone who doesn't work with the ones. It just seems so like seamless and it's exciting to build off of.

22:18I think it's important to be like a little concerned because he hasn't gone up against a defense that can get pressure on him. But like it's promising. And he's 26 also. Yeah, the pressure thing is a big deal because I think you want to see like, OK, has he cut down on because he took a lot of bad sacks in Tennessee. And so he still holds on to the ball a lot. Still holds on to the ball. So there's second down and stuff. It's not like a third and five where you're like, OK, with it. But anyway, I'm sorry. Well, I would love to see him on a team that can run the football because think about that and just what we were talking about in terms of the math.

22:51I wrote down all the teams that are in the quarterback market and I have three teams that I think are my ideal. So he's an interesting one, too, because I don't know what his price tag will be, which obviously affects this. Dolphins, Jets, Browns, Steelers, Colts, Raiders, Vikings, question mark, Cardinals, and then Rams, if Matthew Stafford retires, team I would throw out there. I like the Steelers. Really? Yeah, because they're not drafting high. Yeah. you like it for him or you like it for them. I think it's a good marriage of what they want to be with their offensive identity. If you think of him as kind of like a better, like a, well, they haven't had a quarterback.

23:45He's like a real run threat. So I mean, the few games of Justin Fields, I guess. Right. Yeah. So it's like, what if he was better? What about you? What do you think? Yeah. I mean, I think it's a bit of a cop out, but like I go to Minnesota first. Like if I, if I'm taking it from his perspective, it's like, where do I want to go? Uh, I'm trying to get to Minnesota as quickly as possible. I think also, I don't know if you, I didn't hear if you mentioned the Colts or not. Like I would think about it. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Steichen is like, yeah. Resurrecting the, the Jalen hurts style of offense with, um, Malik Willis, who may even be better in that situation.

24:28um yeah so like those are the top two both with well the uh colts obviously have a much better rushing attack but like it's offenses that have playmakers to take pressure off of them also i would also just love to see like mike mcdaniel go in a completely different direction offensively with the dual threat quarterback and just like let's see let's see it but i don't know financially they can make that work but that would be one where i'd love to did you have you given any thoughts of what because i think that determines a lot too like he's a true free agent yeah i don't know man i i i'm gonna wait and see what the insiders are saying because i truly yeah it's it's a really tough tough one to figure out financially i mean you'd pay him a ton for a short-term deal uh like yeah like uh i pay him a lot close yeah i don't know you wouldn't go like 50 but i mean like 35 or something for two years guarantee with out after after three and restructure if he good for him yeah no that's so great also to everybody who's dunked on me for the last three years for saying that the seahawks should have drafted him on the second round yeah screw you i was right nice i know what you were gonna say and you paused it nice job okay my winner is my next winner got a couple more is the king derrick henry oh yeah now the flip side of this is the packers run defense is a disaster yeah dominique i was going back and watching some of those runs it was because i wanted to like on uh monday on our show uh like identify the biggest problem but i wrote down like 10 different names and i just threw my pen at a certain point the corners in particular raffle but like what happened to rashaun gary yeah he was good last year and he was walker cracked him was all right yeah no he was good last year and he was like fine this year but i don't know i mean this was supposed to be a derrick henry as a winner not sorry yeah yeah not shitting on the on the back okay I say this all the time.

26:40I've had him in my dynasty team now for seven years. It's been an honor and a privilege, sir. Every year he comes in. You can't count on your friends. You can't count on your family. You can't count on your coworkers, but you can count on Derek Henry in December to come through and save my mid team. But it's just, so, you know, I mean, the Packers stacked the box against him for, Any times you're averaging over five yards per carry running into stacked boxes and a 60-plus success rate, you know things are going bad. Lots of different kinds of runs, mostly outside zone, but they hit some power runs, notably near the goal line where they've been bad.

27:18So that was something I thought was interesting. Just putting big bodies on the field, Patrick Ricard kicking ass, taking out linebackers. The tight ends, I thought, blocked really well. We're going to obviously preview the Sunday game in great detail, but this is the formula, guys. You got to figure out a way to do what you did against Green Bay, against Pittsburgh, who have a better run defense. And it was just that feeling of him just gaining power. It's just such a satisfying way to win football games. 36 carries for, like, was it 216 and four touchdowns, something like that. That's a ridiculous stat line.

27:59And it felt like it as you were watching the game. And I think the success rate is the number that you brought up that stands out even more than the yardage because like it's the big plays, but it felt like it never was a bad idea to hand him the ball. They couldn't do anything about him no matter what they did. All right, we're going to get at least four. Maybe he'll get seven or 12 or 40, but we're going to get at least four every time we hand him the ball no matter what it is that you guys do. And so, yeah, that was refreshing. And I'm sure a weight off of Harbaugh's shoulders and Todd Munkin's shoulders.

28:34Like, it's a real easy game to call. It's like, yeah, when you got the big kid in Pop Warner.

28:45I really wish we get Lamar. I feel like it's going to be Tyler Huntley on Sunday. I assume so. But do you think, yeah, I guess you're going to do your review later in the week, so I won't put you on the spot. But, like, I don't know, man. Like, I've gone back and forth on this division a number of times. Not that it matters because whatever team is. But we're going to talk about the Steelers at the end. So, woof, they are my loser, obviously, the Dolphins. Yeah. Well, this Ravens run game, it's funny because after it's been, like, the beginning of the year was really not good. but I think now they're probably all the way up to like top 10 and success rate again.

29:27And, you know, it, it took some time and it really, I mean, Lamar helps, but Tyler Huntley can run. So, you know, he's a threat to keep it enough, I think, to force defenses to respect him. But I expect the Steelers to. So many mistakes. I mean, like self-inflicted errors over the season for the Ravens. I was thinking about the, the Cooper rush decisions, like not that. and then giving up the game last week didn't make any sense. And obviously week one blowing that. It just feels like not that they're a Super Bowl contender team, but like they're just so many. The Cooper Rush decision really deserves more heat.

30:10Harbaugh, that's you, buddy. It was not received well before it happened, at least from what I understand around the building. It was like, what are we doing? what exactly is going on here but they switched back and got it right eventually i guess i ranked the top progressive backup commercials of blue sky and huntley was great he's a great one but still he was three because teddy bridgewater is the best one and then i love the tommy devito one yeah i mean teddy bridgewater is not even close as far away not a bullet but yeah you're not a mechanic you can't fix him all right final winner okay this has been long awaited yes saints fans have first of all y 'all know i'm a shuck boy yeah i've been a shuck boy i coined the term shuck boys anyone who tries to take it now started on this podcast However, despite being a shuck boy, I have not really talked about Tyler since he came on the show, by the way.

Read the full transcript

31:15I've interviewed him. Go check it out on YouTube. Dominique, are you a shuck boy? I'm joining you as a shuck boy. He has – so he's imperfect, obviously, another 26-year-old young quarterback. So like maybe his upside is a little lower than you would want it to be. But you see everything in the course of the last four games is what I focused on. It's not blowing anyone out of the water, but it's a consistent starting quarterback that can give you a chance to succeed. And maybe he improves and gets better. I think the scheme is good and he operates it well. You see him work all the way across the entire field a number of times.

32:01His accuracy isn't as consistent as you would want it to be. But, like, you see him effectively executing the quick game, working from one side of progression to the other side of progression. You see him using his athleticism to buy time and make plays out of nothing. Like, he does all the things that you want a high-end quarterback to do. He just doesn't do them at the highest of ends. And he got Olave involved in the game. So, like, I think the only reason why I brought up his age is because normally for a rookie quarterback, if you see this type of stuff, you're over the moon. You're like, all right, we'll build on this and he'll grow.

32:37He still might. Like, you can get better as older, but it just feels a little less likely. But it was great. You build up the team around them. It's really nice. Because they've won, they've dropped back in the draft. So they're eighth now, I think. So I don't think that they'll be in quarterback drafting position. but it doesn't seem like they they need to be yeah it's it's so watching the titans statement like the titans defense is very bad we must acknowledge this um i think i the thing i was struck by was just he he made he made a lot of throws downfield where i was really impressed by the ball placement yeah i mean there's no coincidence that chris olave is kind of like come back alive since he's been you know over the last few weeks and um there's an aggression and willingness to push the ball downfield but also i think enough accuracy for you to feel good about where things are going moving forward since week eight i'm gonna update these numbers because i gave them on throws over 10 yards he has fourth in qbr sixth in epa per drop back 10th in success rate and it feels sustainable now he takes a lot of sacks don't love that it's interesting because that the rap on him coming out of college was he didn't take any sacks because he was just throwing it away and it almost feels like now he's a little bit a little bit never say die um and i wonder if some of that is like the reaction to that or a little bit um so i don't love that but But I feel that, you know, I haven't evaluated next year's draft yet, so I don't have, like, strong takes on that.

34:20But I feel like he has already shown that he was worth the pick. No question. And for a rebuilding team that's finally getting out of cap hell, avoiding the quarterback carousel for a year is really good, I think. You know, especially given their position. So, yeah, I've enjoyed watching him. I mean, I think, you know, some of the talks about him, he's better than Borey. It's a little premature, and I've seen a few overreactions. But there's definitely enough there for you to be optimistic about what he has shown as an athlete, as a thrower downfield, as a decision maker. Yeah, I think he's shown enough.

35:04And with a smart offensive mind, which he has there, I think he's shown enough that improved talent around him, you can be a competitor. He's one of those quarterbacks to me right now. What he can do on top of that, we'll see. But I think that's the part that's really impressive is that Kellen Moore is a good offensive coordinator, and he has a quarterback that can operate the offense and also take you a little above. He has some creative plays, some creativity plays. is the competition also is a knock. I focused on the last four. You said you went back to 10 or so, right? But I focused on the last four and it was Tennessee.

35:51The Panthers got a pretty good defense. The Jets and Tampa Bay is not great defense. Not great defense. You mentioned Kellen Moore. Dudes are open. That's the other thing. He is a good offensive play caller. I'm consistently impressed by, and Chuck, he's hitting them, right? But guys are open in this offense. He's the other part of why Chris Olave is thriving. I would love to see them add another pass catcher this offseason. And then defensively, things are trending in the right direction too. Again, competition matters, but I think last I checked, they were 13th in DVOA, which is quite a jump over last year.

36:31You got young players playing well, old guys playing well. Cam Jordan was like weirdly unbelievable. So, yeah, Saints. What do you consider young? Like Chase Young, I mean, does he qualify as a young player or old player? He's weirdly not weird. Sorry, I keep saying weirdly. I don't think he what is he? OK, I'm going to guess he's 28. Yeah, probably. I know he's been four years, five years, 26. He's only 26. Oh, he's definitely a young player. you saw that strip fumble he like just took the ball from cam warden scored a touchdown i had brissy's been playing well i love i think the young dbs have been good i would like them to add like a defensive tackle to my at the ageless to mario davis all right uh let's take a quick break okay oh bonus winner raiders fans congrats you won the tank bowl everyone pick baby gross all right let's take quick break i feel like the saints are everything you stand for which is trying yeah yeah i mean fans are having fun this season supposed to try fans are enjoying it all right let's take a great come back and talk about some of the losers of week 17.

I'm going to go first here. Got to go with the Steelers, right? Woof. That's one of the worst losses. I wish, because on the preview pod, I was like very skeptical. I didn't feel good about them because of the DK thing.

40:09But in retrospect, I should have been more skeptical. holy smokes that offense was unpleasant that's one of the most unpleasant watches I posted a video about this but there was a lot of I don't know if you guys did it on the morning shows a lot of like yeah discussion about how's it and his comments about how like Rogers just wanted to avoid the record and on one hand do I think that Aaron Rogers in some part of his brain was like I do not want to be the final highlight yes I that the way the man thinks yes but the more prevailing thought I have is this is who they've been all year. People are like, oh, wow.

40:44He's, he's, they're really trying to knock it. I'm like, yeah, that wasn't even one of his three fastest time to throws of the season. Yeah. Like the whole, the Steelers offense is get heavy, run the ball, and then one-on-ones to DK. Take out DK. I was so like, we talked about this on the Sunday night live show that we did because because Charlie was trying to tell me that you said that they curtailed their offense in order to, and I was like, I mean, I'm sure she said it, but like, I've heard your take more fleshed out since then. But like, that wasn't the case. Like, it wasn't like we changed, they changed everything.

41:29Like, my position was like, yeah, this is not only this who they are. This is also Miles Garrett. Like, it's not about the record. It's like, do we want to live or not? ah, we got it. Like we chip them every time. And like, yeah, so it sucked. It was ugly. This offense is not pretty. It's not fun. It's not good. Everything is predicated around DK Metcalf. He wasn't there and it just looked terrible. Losing Washington is sneaky big as well. Darnell Washington, the tight end slash offensive tackle. They got to figure out. Okay. Well, whatever. I'm not going to, I'm going to save the game analysis.

42:08because I'm going to get into it obviously in great detail and I want some time to do that. But it is a very limited offense that has been the case all year long. Rodgers has had games where he's looked a little bit more alive. The Lions game.

42:26But by and large, this is who he is. He does not want to get pressured. And when he is pressured, he has the worst off-target rate in football because he's throwing the ball. It's not because he's inaccurate. It's because he's like, nope. he he nopes out of plays gotta nope out nope uh Mike Tomlin get up this morning if I thought that Aaron Rodgers was coming back and I was surprised that they asked the question because I it seemed like before the year started Aaron Rodgers was pretty clearly not interested in coming back and I don't think anything happened this season that made him think I want to do this again so i i assume he's done right i cannot you have a limited option if you have a guy who can win one-on-one sometimes it works uh and that's the case with dk i mean you know omar khan deserves criticism also for them not adding more players um it's tough because it's kind of one of those like Like we were on live and Dan was criticizing them for going to MVS over and over and over at the end of the game.

43:35But I'm like, okay, yeah, you can criticize Arthur Smith, but this is who Aaron Rodgers, this is how he wants to play as well. This was the same thing in New York. They'd say, wow, why are they? This is his offense. It's his offense. This is how he wants to play. Can they change that in the final week? They have to. They can't. also mike tomlin punting inside brown's territory sir sir sir you can't do that come on also he punted like right at the 50 too yeah i think it's like the next drive and i mean when the the browns punted it back to them when they had one yard they were backed up i also thought that was not the right decision but i guess they because the the steelers moved it all way down the field to get back in position that they could have won.

44:26I was like, what are you doing? Get this one yard or this half. It was less than a yard. Get this half a yard and let's keep it moving. Just sneak with your door. Or at least that would have killed so much more clock. It wouldn't have been. All you needed was that first down or whatever. All right. I'm going to obviously get into Steelers, Ravens in great detail later this week. Who is your woof? Let's go with Baker Mayfield and the Bucs. I mean, I guess it could be all of the Bucs. um but i well yeah i mean okay i mean just because they they've been so and like i looked at it um earlier today because i i've been kind of throwing this around without actually doing the numbers because i thought it was true but um i i just checked it out before i got on with you early in the season they were five and one in the one score games late in the season one in five in the one score games the they had two um losses late in the season and where it was more than one score but like i think honestly this team hasn't really changed that much like they just have been kind of not that good the whole season and like living off of baker magic at the end of games where he would use his athleticism the problem is with that he gives and takes and i could excuse away I looked at all his interceptions.

45:47I could skew away some of them, whereas, like, the one at the end of the Panthers game is like, all right, you anticipated that Mike Evans was going to go when you're scrambling, right? It's the end game. He's scrambling around, and, like, you threw it the wrong way. Okay, like, it's a bad throw. It doesn't happen to the greats, but, like, I can get why that happened. There's another one against the Saints where the receiver just kind of stopped running the dig. So Baker works all the way across the field to the backside dig. Like receiver stops running to dig and he throws an interception. It's like, all right, you shouldn't have thrown it.

46:19But if I'm being generous, I'll say he stopped running. All the rest of them, like the Miami game that we just watched. The Miami game. Yeah, that's what I mean. I guess we're doing winners and wolves from the weekend. So I'm sorry for going back. No, no, it all matters because it is the, like, you know, these have compounded and it's a big part of why they've lost these. These are close games that they're losing. but the Miami game took me all his fault well I mean the sack fumble I guess not having Tristan works matters we don't yeah but like those interceptions they know the interceptions were not pressure yeah he was just forcing it downfield in a lot of a couple of them at least well I'm not okay so he had two interceptions he should have had more yeah and he was one for seven on deep balls and it was just so unnecessary this was a three-point game um you know against carolina too that he i mean that's a defense that can take away the football they have good corners he just needs to play efficient football and not for a problem with part of the problem with tampa underlying all this is they can't run it right bucky irving against the Dolphins who had nine carries for 19 yards.

47:36And when you look at last year to this year, that's the biggest change. They were such a good rushing team last season. Obviously Irving's been hurt, and they've had offensive line injuries, and you had no worse, and your guards are hurt. So there's reasons for it. I'm just saying this is – they can't run it, so you have Baker playing YOLO ball. If I had to sum up what's going on. Defense, I mean, you know, they held him 20 points, but I thought Quinn Ewers was not fooled by some of the things they were throwing at him, which was interesting to see. Yeah. The Todd Bowles blitz happy defense hasn't been effective.

48:16And that was one of the things you were celebrating me early in the year because I had anticipated that they would be good at defense and they were early in the year. Now they stink. so I should be called to the carpet on that poor prediction also because now they're not good and they don't change right so like it's which I mean I get it you want to do with what you think you do best or what you know best but like I have no idea how I'm gonna pick this game one sec yeah we're talking about Baker and we're not Bryce Young is it should be in a wolf because oh my god that was horrible. The Seahawks made that offense look so bad.

48:57Now, the difference is the Bucs were playing the Dolphins. Yeah, so I think I know who you're going to pick. I know who I'm going to pick. No, actually, I truly don't. I need to, I haven't really, I need to say. Yeah, I guess, yeah, I'm leaning Carolina honestly, but we'll see. I like the Panthers defense. They got two really good corners. They are gettable, but I like the corners. I think they have really good corners. And, um, like Mike Jackson is, I feel like probably underappreciated having an awesome season. And Horn is ridiculous on like deep balls as far as taking the ball away. What did we just say Baker did last week through interceptions on these deep balls?

49:40Yeah. Better not try that with JC. Oh, my key for that is just going to be like, please, for the love of God, just throw out the linebacker. Just keep it, keep it short and keep it simple. Call 1-800-GRAINGER, click grainger.com, or just stop by. all right um obviously much more discussion so my wolf is josh allen yeah uh bad game obviously so look it's not entirely it's it's not it's definitely not entirely his fault because every bill's bad game comes down to are you facing a defense second stop explosive runs the eagles could yeah and the bills can't beat you the we talked a little bit about Malik Willis and getting covered. So the Eagles played three times as much cover three as they normally do in this game.

52:07It was, it was a very much like, we know who you are kind of game. And the bills just don't have guys who consistently win outside. That's not Josh Allen's fault. That's Brandon Bean's fault. That said, uh, obviously he had the miss at the end and it was just a flat out, it was kind of, it was kind of like nice that it was just so clearly a miss because no one had to debate it we're all just like yeah it was uh but throughout the game he was sacked five times uh the all four man rush he had an average time to sack of 5.77 seconds which is very long on the season he has a very he he last year he was first in pressure to sack rate this year he's 24th but he has the fifth longest time to sack of the year now again some of that is guys are not getting open for sure but he got to give up on some of these plays because he took some bad sacks in this game obviously the super sack and again you're going back to watch and you're like no one's open it's a bad play whatever but he also needs to play more efficient football because in some like some of these moments he is hurting his team by holding on to the football yeah i agree obviously and this team is like i guess it'd be interesting to see if he like turned up his risk profile because the rushing attack wasn't as explosive as it's been in other situations so like not to excuse him he doesn't need any excuses he's um josh allen he'll be fine and he's going to be explosive that um fumble that they called like i thought that was an incomplete pass honestly his arm was going forward but again he doesn't need these excuses doesn't change the fact that he wasn't good which he still had a chance to win i wonder how we feel about it if he just didn't dirt that pass if we'd feel different about the way that he played.

53:56So I think the most surprising, I guess, which is why you focused on Josh Allen. The most surprising thing was the defense. And I guess part of conditions had something to do with it. Was the defense wasn't abysmal? Which, like, I know. Yeah, the Bills' defense wasn't abysmal. Well, that was a great example of good defense or horrendous Eagles offense. Yeah, right. They gave up some big plays. They did some cool stuff. They do cool stuff. they do uh i guess by babich is the one calling the place that they do some cool stuff and pressures and in the second half i noticed that like they and they've been doing that all year so yeah yeah but yeah i mean the josh allen thing i guess it's it's the he definitely was a wolf this week but like yeah yeah yeah i think the my concern for the bills is not about josh allen it's what happens when you come up against the defense that can stop the run yeah good news is there's not a lot of those in the AFC NFC.

54:52I mean, okay. So right now, who's their most likely playoff standings. I actually haven't looked at the, um, the bills. Cause there's still a little bit. It's, it's so tricky too, because of like some of the guys are sitting. So right now they've got new England. That's great. They can't stop to run. I'm not, I don't mean it's necessarily grand the other side of the ball, but they, they could run the Pittsburgh. Jacksonville, Pittsburgh's locked in the four. So it would be, it's probably New England or Denver, Denver.

55:31It's because, so this, the chargers are resting their starters, right? So Denver, Denver's probably got the, that means they've got the one seat locked, right? Because New England, I haven't paid attention to the AFC side of this as much, but if New England, yeah. So unless New England, even if New England wins against the dolphins, if the Chargers are resting their starters, it's going to be. So you're probably going to get New England. Oh, but then the Chargers, then you bump up to the sixth seed. Sorry, pardon me, if the Chargers lose that game. And then you get Jacksonville, which is a decent run defense, but not as good as Philadelphia, of course.

56:02I mean, honestly, I'd be more concerned about Jacksonville than New England. Yeah. Defensively, we're talking about the, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, and yeah, if Trevor Lawrence can, I mean, last week wasn't great, But if he can continue to put up numbers, then you're going to be in a tough spot. Yeah. I like the Jags. Yeah. Which I think they're going to, they'll be fine against the Bills defense. I would assume. You have a very interesting woof that I'm excited to talk about because I mean, I just don't think anyone's talking about this. CJ Stroud. So the Texans have been a really interesting.

56:48Super Bowl contender team that they're out there in this very weird year because you think of the units that you can trust and you can obviously trust their defense and they dodged a couple bullets because their corners both of them left for for a period of time in this game I think were injured but they came back were healthy and were fine so that was a bullet dodge but the the wolf was CJ Stroud and he had an incredible first half where he threw a couple of quarter really Yeah, yeah, that's fair. Yeah, the first quarter he threw two bomb touchdowns. And the rest of the first half was fine. It wasn't great.

57:19It wasn't good, but it was fine. And then from then on, it just was bad. The interceptions were inexcusable and bad. There was, I think, one of the picks, he might have been under a little bit of pressure. But it wasn't like, while the O-line is still not good, it's not one of those situations where we can blame them for putting him in a bad situation. He seemed skittish. I don't know what did it. There was also a play in the second quarter where the offense just seemed disjointed. They ran a screen to the left, but the running back ran it to the right, and all the linemen ran to the left, and C.J.

57:59Stroud just back there looking confused. And, yeah, he couldn't pull it together. They ended up winning the game, but I was still pretty concerned for them headed into the playoffs when their offensive hopes are pinned to CJ Stroud not making those big mistakes. After the first quarter, he averaged, the Texans' offense, not just him, averaged negative 0.3 EPA per play. And I think you saw, there's two things. I have two thoughts on this. One is, I think CJ Stroud's a little bit of a streaky quarterback, just generally. I love him. I think his highs are up there with many, certainly top 10, right?

58:39but he has stinkers here and there where he's kind of inaccurate and he has his ups and downs as a quarterback so that's part of it I also think the Chargers are a bad matchup for them because the defense is really good and the way you beat LA in my opinion is you got to run the ball and they can't run the ball so you know I think it's funny because we were talking about they're kind of like the reverse of the Bills in some ways because I think they've got really good pass catchers. And if they're going up against a bad pass defense with a bad pass rush, they can really take advantage of it. But that's not the Chargers.

59:17Chargers have a soft-dish run defense. They're not good at running the ball. So they're another team where I'm looking at – I think matchup is going to be a big deal in the postseason, right? If they're going up against a team with a better pass defense than run defense, it could cause some issues for them. Yeah, I don't know. It's also been, even in their win streak, there's been some moments or quarters, halves, where the offense has really regressed. The good news is the defense is so sick. It doesn't matter most of the time, and that's going to continue to be the case. I mean, I would say looking across the NFL at all the playoff fields.

1:00:06By the way, next week we're going to rank all the playoff teams. The two units I feel, the three units I feel the best about are the Texans, Seahawks, Eagles defense. I'm putting them above the Broncos. Broncos fans are my screaming. Yeah. You don't have to only do three. You can do four. Throw the Broncos in there. The Broncos team. And I guess, like, the Niners offense I feel really good about. I mean, I find it interesting where you put the Broncos defense outside of that, but I guess it's – I just find it forgettable. Yeah, that's what I was going to – I mean, it's – They're very good, but – It's the over-reliance on man coverage is, like, they do find themselves in situations where they can occasionally be gotten if the pass rush is, if a team max protects or the pass rush doesn't get home on a particular play, they are gettable.

1:01:06It really doesn't feel like there's anything you can do against the Texans. I don't want to do anything. There's some really great defenses in the postseason this year. For sure. All right. Well, as I mentioned, next week, once we know the field, we are going to rank them together. That's going to be fun. I have no idea. I mean, like this Rams loss. Who's the best team in the NFL, Dominique? I don't know, man. Who knows? It'll be fun. We'll figure it out next week. We got to figure this out together because right now I have no idea. I'm looking at the playoffs and I thought it was the Rams. I really did for much of the season.

1:01:47It may not have changed. Maybe not. Yeah, maybe I'll just write it up to some injuries and a Stafford stinker. They fixed their special teams. They got a good front on defense. We're good to go. It's hilarious. I mean, it's sad, but it's funny. How do you do the old special teams coach? And you're like, he didn't do anything. Yeah, I mean, you know all of a sudden, like the coach did block a field goal because they changed coaches. It's very funny. Okay, well, so later this week, I'm going to preview, of course, all the week, the three meaningful Week 18 games with Jordan Rodrigue. We're also going to do fix-it items for the below 500 team.

1:02:19So if you're a fan of the Titans, the Browns, the Raiders, whatever, and you haven't heard your team talked about because obvious reasons we're going to finally talk about them we're going to give you some non-quarterback to-do items for the offseason uh also dominique fox for the show check it out wherever you get your pods i'll be joining uh later this week i presume we haven't talked about the schedule but figure something out uh we might not we might take it off okay well go check it out anyways uh and then on viewer discretion which is my TV pod with David Dennis Jr. We are talking about Fallout.
