In short
A live, public test of Anthropic’s newly released Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1, focused on coding/knowledge work, safety/safeguards, pricing/data-retention changes, and “computer use” agentic workflows. Hosts compare benchmark claims (Terminal Bench Science, Humanity’s Last Exam, Argentic coding) and then run hands-on demos: “Cat Doom” browser game, a Blender 3D modeling attempt via Blender MCP, and other agent-generated mini apps (including a “cold case”/root-cause debugging concept and “Flappy Bird” with “flamingo speed”).
Guest backgrounds
No formal guests are introduced; it’s a live panel/stream with multiple hosts (notably Grant and Corey) plus chat participants. A chat mention includes “Ryan” and “Daniel,” but they aren’t interviewed.
Key claims
Fable 5.1 is positioned as ~25% cheaper than Fable 5 (token pricing/caching changes), with improved safeguards (fewer false positives; cybersecurity safeguards; “discover vulnerabilities” but not exploit development). Enterprise Frontier safeguards store data in customer-controlled cloud infra; eligible customers may get zero data retention until rollout. Benchmarks show large gains over prior models.
Notable examples
Cat Doom spray-bottle gameplay; agent attempts to add levels; Blender MCP setup/3D character modeling; “Floppy/Flappy Bird” with flamingo speed power; solar-system “volcano” visualization; “cold case” researcher UI demo.

Transcript
Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:00Welcome, humans, to the Neuron Live. We're excited to have you here. Not that many people are going to be here for a few minutes, because this was rather sudden. Since Anthropic dropped Opus 5.1, we thought, eh, what the heck, let's go live and test it out. Fable. Fable 5.1. Jesus, thank you. Thank you. That's old habits die hard.
0:24Grant:yeah getting used to the fable getting used to all the new words between them and open ai we've got mythos fables soul light astro blah blah blah doody do uh all right blah blah and doody do all right we're off to a great start that's right as always well the kicker here today to know is that uh we just thought this would be a really good time to go live i'm going to share my screen real quick so we can kind of run through the press release of what hath been bequeathed upon the world yes and for people who see the title and say hey you're going to test it yes we are going to test it we are going to test it we will we will share so we're going to take just a few minutes to run through this here though so you know what we're looking at in case you're not aware dropped last hour or so grant something like that probably i think it was around 12 so So, yeah.
1:19Okay. Okay. So, we've got two new models. Fable 5.1, Mythos 5.1. There's some things in here. I know I'm often critical of Anthropic. I have a few things in here I really like, though, and I'm going to make sure and I highlight those. A few things I'm kind of iffy on, a little confused about, but we're going to go through anything and everything we can get through in about an hour today. So, let's see what we've got here. We've got Fable 5.1, Mythos 5.1. say they are the world's most advanced models for coding and knowledge work. I always love a bold... These press releases. And the research capabilities offer an early glimpse of how models will contribute to scientific progress.
2:06That's a thing you'll notice in here. Recently on Twitter, Dario made some comments
2:11Grant:about not talking enough about the benefits, And I think this is an attempt at doing that because they get into the science quite a bit here as we go down, which I found particularly exciting. That's the stuff I love. That's a good meta read on why they did that.
2:31Essentially, safeguards is what you're looking at here. Like Fable 5.1, I mean Mythos 5.1 is Fable with the training wheels kicked off for just like they did with Mythos for trusted access. They're trusted access partners in specifically cybersecurity and life sciences areas for obvious reasons on each. Takes important steps toward addressing feedback we've received from customers on price, data retention and safeguards. I'm glad to hear that because data retention, they've kind of always had the worst policy. Like they had a weird like three year hold at one point. I don't know what that is now, but I assume we'll read some more about that as we go.
3:17Said you can expect Fable 5.1 to cost an estimated 25 % less than Fable 5. Wherever usage is billed by token. That's not. It's really interesting. A lot of this has to do with what they've done with cashed reads. Historically, Anthropic has had a really confusing system around cashed tokens, where every other company pretty much uses just cashed tokens or$1 per million, $0.25 per million for Mercury, for example. And I think close to that for the latest chat GPTs. They've gone with a set price, finally, of$0.75, which I think is glorious. that simplifies it, makes it easier for people to predict what a run might cost.
4:04The problem is it's really hard to show it on paper because every run is different. Every run has different needs. Every site loads different. Every file is a different size. And, you know, it's really tough to show that on paper. But when it comes to caching, that's more of a financial efficiency fix you'll feel than see.
4:27Grant:yeah i think in general the whole thing should should be less expensive overall or if you're on the subscription and you think in terms of your rate limits you should be able to use it for longer before you get rate limited that's the idea we still have to test it in practice but yeah it looks like they're going to have uh interesting they're using enterprise frontier safeguards which is their new thing works by storing your data in cloud infrastructure controlled by you, not by Anthropic. That's really cool. Made available to enterprise customers in phases beginning later this fall. Okay, so this isn't being released.
5:07They're just announcing that part. Until it's available, eligible customers will be able to use 5.1 with zero data retention, though.
5:15Grant:So that's cool. Very nice addition for Anthropic there. I like that. Safeguards. We've improved them to reduce false positives where the system flags benign content. I'm sure if you've followed the fable mythos story along the way, you've known there was a bunch of that when those released where, you know, like researchers were trying to ask normal questions that were pretty simple and getting kicked out. So it looks like they've been working on that. And that's great. Newest safeguards block in cybersecurity, new safeguards block 60 % fewer false positives than before, which is great. in part because Fable 5.1 can now be used to discover software vulnerabilities, though not to develop exploits for them.
6:02In biology, they've got an access program, partnership with the U.S. government to enable Claude Mythos 5.1's advanced capabilities. All right. A new performance frontier. This is really interesting because what you'll notice on Terminal Bitch Science, which is the benchmark they've really highlighted here throughout this. It scored dramatically better than Fable 5, which also had this weird thing where Extra High and Max did not necessarily perform better but still cost more money. I'm not sure how that worked, but this is really cool. It's what you want to see. Yes, we are going to test it. yes the audience is asking i have it pulled up don't worry gotcha gotcha yeah it's coming in just a minute i just wanted to run you through the benchmarks here uh terminal bench science terminal bench 4 gdp val uh it's it's through the roof on all of those which is wonderful beating fable opus soul uh quite handedly uh i'm anxious to see it in action here in a moment We also have Humanity's Last Exam, which is one we all know.
7:19I always like comparing ones we're familiar with a little more. But it's good to see it topping out over those already. Argentic coding looks strong, about a three-point bump over their models, about a six-point oversole. Scientific research, we won't have to get too deep into that. Just wanted to show this, that, you know, they're putting some focus there. let's let Grant bring it up. We'll talk a little more about this in a bit.
7:49Grant:I was just making, I was just trolling people in the chat. I said, you better tell us what you want us to test. If you're going to call us out for not testing it fast enough, you better. I want to see some prompt suggestions in the chat. Okay, folks, come on now. You ready, Grant? Don't be calling us out if you're not going to participate. Yes, yes, yes. Yes, let's do it. I do need, I do need a suggestion though. What do we actually want to see it do? Because we could test it a lot of different ways. What do we think it's going to excel at? What do we think it could possibly do bad at? That's a good question.
8:31Try its computer use. They've touted it as being pretty good. And it's an area where they've traditionally lacked a little. I'd be curious to see Oh wait
8:43Grant:You're not seeing my share? Hold on Oh It was sharing before it got kicked off I think Oh there you are Now I see you Alright has anybody answered my call Test making 3D models with Blender We could do that Do I have Blender on this computer? I think I do I definitely have it on my other one Sorry the shadow dimension I've never used Blender and not dealt with 3D models It's something I keep wanting to play with. Okay, let's start a new project and let's make 3D models. That's what I said. I like it. I'm going to say we're going to use Blender MCP. So if that's not set up, you know. Grant, you're on their big max, right?
9:29Grant:Say that again? You're on the max plan, right? Yes, I am. I am on the$200 max tier. That's right. So here's the things that we should be looking out for, for folks who are not familiar with working with Fable. Number one, is it going to be using phrases like load-bearing? Like, does it talk like a normal person? Because Opus 5 supposedly was better at coding, but it talked like a weirdo from another planet, right? Like a research paper? Not even. It just would use the same phrases over and over like it was, I don't know. Some people say it's part of their watermarking. I don't know if the phraseology is part of the watermarking, but it's just annoying.
10:16Grant:Okay, let's see. What do we got here? Okay, Blender MCV isn't live yet. The bridge on the claw side is running and the add-on is installed, but Blender itself isn't open. Yeah. So, okay. So, I got to fix this. So, Blender. The one thing I miss about Before Models Got Really Complex is that it was really easy to do quick demos. To like motor prompts and little things. Let's do something quick. Let's do something quick. We'll do it in the cloud. We could get that going first. Yeah. I'll set this up. Let's do. The only annoying thing is you have to have a project when you do it in the cloud. I'm just going to start here.
10:59Grant:And I'm going to say. Universal Fund Center. yeah this is where i start all my projects because i got annoyed of of um you know having to set up a claw.md every time so i just started all from the same place with context and it's listening to me talk so i see that uh let's spin up a browser-based web game for cat doom it's the game doom but with cats put all of the controls on the screen so it's easy for me to use and let's make it easy for us to play in the browser. And you are going to test the game yourself using computer use to make sure that the game actually runs.
11:42Grant:Cattoon. Give me an app idea as well. We can spin up an easy app idea. Hey, I see my Twitter buddy Ryan in the chat. That's awesome. What up, Ryan? Yeah. So, okay. So while this is going, I'm going to go ahead and figure out the Blender situation. blender blender blender
12:05okay
12:11Grant:okay so it says I'll build Capdoom as a single file ray casting game with on screen buttons serve it locally and drive it in the browser pane myself fun I love it
12:28suddenly it's always right suddenly we're hearing about ray casting every day every time you log in
12:34Grant:it's just an easy way to yeah yeah handle spatial awareness yeah it's just it's just how i learned about it i've just learned i just learned about uh fable 5.1 which just came out what's a really good app we can build with fable 5.1 use web research to look up fable 5.1 so you know everything about fable 5.1 and then make the most killer easy to demonstrate app you can think of that would be really good for fable 5.1 to do that's a good idea seeing if i can turn you know i can't adjust your volume you sound really soft today grant oh i can fix that maybe well it's when you speak up it's better okay i'll just be quiet i think yeah I'll just be quiet
13:27I'm just kidding
13:29Grant:okay so raid I don't know if I pronounce this that's Ryan yeah oh okay what's up Ryan it didn't take me long to get knocked down to Opus for violating safeguards I actually haven't been getting that for quite some time on Fable 5 yeah honestly that's probably over active on launch day is my guess and they're gonna tune it down but um yeah uh also uh to ask the astro question i i still expect it it could come as soon as thursday could be a couple more weeks but it sounds like it's really close from everything i've seen i i've been a little a little dark on twitter over the last few days so my my uh knowledge of the latest rumors is a little thin but i have a feeling it's coming quick kind of honestly it kind of surprises me they pushed this out with the idea that it could be followed by another this week i think they wanted to be first and the rumor that i've heard is that it's because astra is going to smoke this and um they might have fable 5.2 ready to go and they're testing it so i think they want a fast follow on fable 2 5.2 if that's you know to be believed if that's to be believed I've really gotten to a point where I don't care yet anymore what benchmarks say on any of them.
14:53Like, I just, I increasingly want to feel it with my projects. Like, how does it feel working on what I'm building? And if it feels better and I'm impressed, that is awesome. But if it doesn't, I really don't care what it says on a report card.
15:10Grant:Let's see how much usage we've got. Your limits are temporarily boosted. So it looks like we've only used about 3 % of Fable. But I was using it a little bit earlier. So OK, we've got three chats going. Let me tell the Blender one. OK, Blender is up. Let's try it again. OK, so we've got Blender and a browser game cooking. That's a good start. Yep, so we've got three chats going. Let's see. tried to do some commands some failed failed to read typescript streaming interesting interesting interesting that's an odd one I say that typescript errors happen it's normal tried to look for an anthropic credential on disk that's weird that is weird why are you trying to find out why are you trying to find my API keys bro I kept freaking out I'm building mobile games right now, a few of them.
16:14And in testing the ads, like we're setting up on Google AdMob and everything, and it's running all these simulations, and I've got my laptop sitting in the floor. All of a sudden, it starts screaming ads at me out of nowhere. And I'm like, why in the world is Codex over here watching videos? And come to find out, it's not. It's testing the ad function in my game for me while I'm sitting back. and every time it makes me jump out of my skin just out of the blue, it's like, add volume.
16:44Grant:By the way, for folks who like to read, I just put out a summary of Fable 5.1 and all of the takes that I read on Twitter right before we got on here. Just share that in the chat. Yeah. I published it very quickly, so apologies. There's some slumping there. I'll go back and edit it later. There's a cool thing they're doing with NASA if anyone's interested in. I'm hoping to maybe learn a little more about that and write about it.
17:14Grant:We got something. Check this out. We already have a better cat now than we've ever had. It looks like the gun is a no-cat spray bottle. It's always different. Interesting. Oh, okay. Okay, I can play it. This definitely looks like Doom. Browser game is the way to go They can slay out a browser game Oh How do I shoot Oh it's a spray bottle To spray the cat I got a click Okay spacebar I put them to sleep Oh we don't kill them That is so adorable Hands down best cat doom so far This is the best cat doom We've been building cat doom since it was a hot mess. Because as you know, if you read the Neuron newsletter, we got the cat, Ollie.
18:10And so we thought it would be fun months to do Cat Doom. I think we started this back like Gemini 2.5, maybe before then. Yeah. And every model since we give it the old college try. I'll tell you what.
18:28Grant:You want to, while I'm... Go ahead. Yeah. The black cat's eyes are scary. They're all scary. They're coming for me. I don't know how the house got overrun with cats last time, though. That was kind of weird. On this, do you think Fable's stricter safety filters will make it lose the coating race to Astra? No. Not necessarily. They say that they've loosened them. We'll see. Until some researchers and stuff start pouring through it and either being excited or whining, we'll have a better idea what that's going to look like. And hopefully later tonight, tomorrow, we'll know. But we'll see. The truth is, I think if anything's going to kill them on agentic coding, it'll more likely be Codex than a model itself.
19:19Grant:Are you saying the application layer will kill them? Yeah. Yeah, I'm not... To be clear, that's a bad choice of words. but I think I think Codex the interface is a really well built useful thing the videos using voice chat in there is crazy I've got the little micro keyboard and I can just hit a voice chat button and be like hey tell this chat to go do this tell this agent to go do that and it goes it prompts sends and comes back when one's done and says, hey, it's really pretty nice. I cannot get off the couch. I literally built an entire mobile app over remote from the chat GPT phone app this weekend.
20:07Grant, this is a cool cat doom. I'm going to be honest.
20:10Grant:I should publish this one, actually. I think I'm going to publish this.
20:17Grant:So the only thing I think will actually take down Anthropic in the coding race is capability and price. I think they have shown to be that they will refuse to go to lower their prices past a certain threshold. And I think if OpenAI can, you know, out capability them at a lower price, that's the only thing that's going to take them down. I don't think they even have to out capability them. I think they just have to striking distance match. I think there comes a point when in business as token bills get higher and you know like we're dealing with it Grant where we've got people hitting their limits earlier than they used to as they've started using things like chat GPT work and the truth is suddenly a business is out of the blue concerned about keeping usage manageable and if you can get you know there's kind of a rule in business with delegation that if someone beneath you can do a job 80 % is good and 20 % more time, you should let them do it.
21:19And I think when you take that and tack that into models, that's a big concern. I see you guys actually touch on stage. Totally, totally valid.
21:30Grant:Welcome, Tim. The easy to share. Yeah, definitely seems faster. Like, as I recall, first time with Fable Grant, Cattoon wasn't quick.
21:47And that was just a few minutes.
Read the full transcript
21:50Grant:Yeah. The truth is, I don't even care about the time if it does what I want well. Like, I have no, I usually have enough fires going that if one needs to cook longer to get it right, cool. You know, there's no reason for me to rush. A year ago, this would have taken, you know, an engineering consultant, a business partner, some money, a lot of time and planning and contractors. And now you can do it in, you know, if it's 15 minutes instead of five, that's still pretty great. I'm not seeing the Blender MCP. I might have to download it again for that one. Oh, that's a bummer. Yeah, the Blender one is not as easy as Godot.
22:35Grant:Like Godot is like you just like you can run Godot in headless mode like just if you have the MCP set up. It's like super easy. The Blender one you have to actually connect it every time and it's really tedious. Grant, can you ask it to use the computer use to go download the use computer use to find the information and come back and install the blender mcp good idea i love computer use i'm a sucker for it the one thing i hate about using it with i use it with soul is that it won't close a tab it's a monster you'll have i'll open my chrome and there will be like 17 tabs and it's like it's open the same website over and over and i'm always It's like, man, close a tab.
23:29It's okay. Chrome's running poorly. Like, of course it's running poorly. You've got 37 tabs open. Oh, I know.
23:35Grant:Yeah, they don't close the tabs. It's really weird. I don't know why they don't do that. It is. You can get it too. You just have to be like, hey, go close your tabs. Shut the door behind you. Yeah. Were you born in a barn? Allow. Allow. What did you say? Did you ask me something? Yeah. All right, so this is computer use. So this is Claude. I'm going to give it permissions stupidly oh well it's fine take over my computer you only live once brother let it happen I know I wish I was using my other computer computers aren't made for you to use anymore they're made for you to let something else work on and you know have a good backup it's kind of true okay so let's see what it's doing it's inspecting the extension Interesting.
24:37Grant:Reading the lab repo index, we can kind of click in and see what it's looking at. Inspecting the extension. Just looking at my stuff in here.
24:55Grant:You want to read some takes while we're letting this cook? Let's do it. What you got? What you got? Let me pull up the link I just shared. I thought there was some interesting angles on here. I don't know if you want to share screen as well while this is going on, or we can just read through some of these. let me see if I can get a window up in my my personal so I can get into my oh I'm on a new computer it's not logged in yet look at this this is crazy it's like just straight up it's got the MCP zip installing it this could be a virus for all I know yeah but you should not have to deal with this anymore you should be able to say go get this do it i'm gonna go pour me a glass of water and walk the dog this is just out of control dude the fact that i can do this it's just crazy people sleep on computer use and voice are two things i think people still sleep on that that to me computer use is what those two both of those are the things that make this feel like we're living in 2050 like the two things that make me feel like I'm living in the future are, are being able to just talk to my computer, uh, and talk to it anywhere and to be able to, um, just say, go do this.
26:24And it starts blasting open computers. I mean, like it'll open mine the other day, told me to close my iPhone so it could use iPhone mirroring.
26:35and i could only use it if you're locked uh if it's locked
26:41Grant:yeah this this computer does look crazy good that's what uh easy to share said dude yeah this this is out of control you like imagine trying to get it to do this like even with the fable five like a minute ago yeah it's so much faster like i remember watching these computer use and just watching them like slowly drag and do something and then ask the thinking process and then finally it clicks to the new tab it's absolutely out of control well the interview with tibo the other day one of the things they said about astro that was really interesting was that it's supposed to uh be like lightning fast computer use that's where the comment came from about your cpu is going to matter again because the ai is going to be able to use your computer faster than your computer can use your computer.
27:27Wow.
27:27Grant:Wild. It is. I love it.
27:34Now, from a, like, using this in the real world standpoint, not sitting here on a call, it's pointless if you're staring at it. Like...
27:45Grant:Oh, I agree 100%. But it's cool to stare at once in a while. Yeah, like the nice thing about Codex's computer use, and the way that it's set up, is that it just works on a side window. Yeah, it'll do it there, or it'll do it in your normal Chrome. What I like is that if it goes into my actual Chrome, I can go open browsers, do my own thing. It works in the background. I don't disrupt it. I can be in a tab scrolling X, and it can be operating in another tab in the same window invisibly, which is really really sick what are we modeling? Star Forge Hero Props? Oh yeah that's a game I'm working on Oh never mind I was thinking of Hero Forge where you can get your D &D characters made into minis Oh we could do that One of us needs to get a 3D printer so we can just have AI 3D printer stuff live Yeah we really do man we really do I'm going to send you a file And it's a thing I had ChatGPT make, and specifically for this.
28:54So it's my Android wizard from every angle. Like, it should be able to very much work this way. And I'd be curious to see what it is.
29:06Grant:Atharva said, working at Deloitte, where they just announced AI use bonuses, will advanced models like Fable eventually replace consulting firms entirely? No. No, and the reason for this is because all companies need someone other than themselves to blame. So there will always be consultants to outside consulting firms so that the companies can point their finger at someone other than themselves. Really, the managers. I would expect it to be less of them, though. I think there'll be less employees and less jobs there. I think it's wages. Some people finally caught on to this. I said this in March when we had Ryan Carson on the show, that it's wages that's at stake, actually, with AI.
29:51Grant:It's that they're just going to pay less for everything that they need because AI can do so much of it. Either because token usage is going to go up and they need to pay for more tokens, or because the capability is such that they don't need you for as long because they can have AI do it faster than you. And you wind up in a situation where the fact is the right business choice becomes maybe less people. And that's really unfortunate. Now, there are definitely new things you can do, new ways to shift them around, retrain them. For people who are willing to be and want to be, I think there will definitely still be a home.
30:33Grant, I sent you an image if you want to try it. let's say in blender and see if it can make him 3d uh this was uh this was you sent it on slack yes okay yeah this is cogburn i uh i have a dnd group with my buddies we play every friday night and uh and this is we we use ai a lot for like image capture and and creating images of funny
31:01Grant:scenes while we're playing our normal not pen and paper because we're all over the country but while we're playing our normal game we use AI to make visuals and things that are fun or even break out cool maps but this is Cogburn Cogburn is my android wizard and he's really cool he's got a little buddy called Brambling Jack that is a raging ravenous tumbleweed and we recently made these images of all of our characters and had ChatGPT Image take our core picture and make like a tile sheet of different angles and views where you had more data on your character to make it easier and better at generating our images.
31:49But it just made sense to me that that could be really cool for exactly this.
31:56Grant:So I gotta email this picture to myself of course you might take my screen down for a minute oh yeah i'm sorry i didn't realize are you not on you're not on that computer are you no i got i got my personal computer over here that has okay cool cool i'm sorry i could have absolutely just emailed it to you or texted it to you really easily what if you uh what if you text it to me that'd be faster okay if text is quick i shall text g rant harvey good day we'll pull we'll pull the stream up back in a second so basically um i we had three three screens going and the first screen was cat doom and so i tasked the cat doom agent to add more levels to the game then the other one was go out and make whatever app is coolest uh based on what you think fable 5.1 would do well and it created something bizarre that I had to ask it, like, okay, what are you making over here?
32:53Grant:Because it didn't make any sense to me. It needed an API key. I was like, what are you building over here, you little trickster? And then the third one is the 3D modeling thing, which we showed with computer use, which was really impressive. I was able to just get the MCP and set it up. I'm glad to see them catch up in that because that's a specific area they've not been as strong in the past. and I think computer use is going to increasingly be a thing like I find myself more going to the computer for two or three minutes and then leaving it alone while I go do something else like watch TV or clean the kitchen make a good coffee Corey somebody asked, is that a pentagram behind you?
33:45Grant:Are you summoning demons when you're not Oh, I always get asked this. No, no it's not a pentagram. It's a d20. It's a dice. And it also is neon light. I can flick it on, but it's got a problem and wasn't coming on the other day. I think. Can you pull my computer up when you're back as well? Let's see. I sure can. Yeah, not a pentagram, but you're also not the first person to think it could be a pentagram. on a work call on a work call is that a pentagram on the wall behind Corey yeah oh hang on I turned on your camera that's hilarious the power that you have I believe it turned it on I have the ability to just turn your camera on that is glorious oh yeah wow you get multiple angles of me oh okay sorry turn off camera good the news again sorry i got distracted shiny objects and all uh that's fair it happens but this is this is why we're live folks getting the live the live experience okay so i've got a picture here and i'm gonna say hey let's create this guy too and if you can see on my screen i'll full screen this so this is cory's dnd character his name is cog burn he's a robot cowboy is that what he is yeah he's an android wizard buddy but he talked like doc holiday from tombstone not there love it um oh the other question from the chat i wanted to answer uh is claude fable 5.1 included in cursor plan yes so uh well actually i don't know if i included it in the plan but cursor does have access to fable 5.1 they announced i'm sure it is most of the companies that work with them closely like like it'll appear in copilot the day it releases it'll appear in cursor the day it releases most of those big companies have like immediate
35:50Grant:create this guy yeah it seems like most people who are professionally coding these days like i don't know too many people who who use cloud code like if they're engineers at some big company usually they're using cursor with clod or codex models or devin devin's the the other one that's really uh been taking off lately and i that's the one ryan carson recommended and he's a friend of the show and i i i probably use devin um before i use cursor just personally i always liked windsurf that which devin made um yeah yeah speaking of friends can you when i've been i keep meaning to invite on and we just haven't scheduled it.
36:28I need to do that.
36:30Grant:I'm just going to read this person's comment. We're just going to run it. I like Claude. Look at him down there. He was dancing, typing away like a madman. The entire solar system is a higher dimensional volcano erupting. Mercury is the Iron Basin. Venus is the magma chamber. Earth is the outside surface of the volcano.
36:54Grant:What do you think of this?
37:00Grant:Sir, I don't understand your comment, but I'm asking it. Also, I'm asking this in Claude code, so it might get some weird responses.
37:12Grant:Okay, I'm going to give me more feedback. The moon is the ash cloud. Mars is the tip of the volcano. The asteroid belt is the moment the eruption punched through. Jupiter is the gas plume, meeting the cosmic ocean currents and creating. I don't know what Saturday is. The smoke cloud with the ring around it. This guy is on one. Okay, so I'm just sending this. This is literally my raw thought dump. We'll see what... Supposedly, Fable is really good with this type of thing. It says, as physics, it doesn't hold, but as an image, it's reaching for something real. Here's how I'd split it. What it gets right by accident.
37:52Grant:Oh, I need to turn this off. It keeps typing. Stop. Okay. The inner solar system really did soar itself by heat and density, and the sorting ran outward from the center. Close to the young sun, only iron and rock could condense, so Mercury ended up with an oversized iron core, roughly 70 % of its mass. Further out, the volatiles survived, and past the frost line, you get ice and gas. The sun also does erupt in a literal sense. Solar wind and radiation pressure blew the light material outward early on, which is a big part of why the heavy stuff is close in. The hot center pushes material outward and the heavy stuff stays near the heat is a fair one-line summary of planetary formation.
38:33Grant:Okay, so you're kind of right, but you're also not at all. Maybe what I'll say just to make this fun. Two problems. Can you visualize this?
38:50Grant:Let's make this a visual thing. Let's visualize it.
38:58can you visualize this is one of my favorite things to ask an ai
39:03Grant:i've had some wild things okay we're just gonna let daniel keep commenting and ignore him for now um let's check out cat doom let's see what did what did cat doom do
39:20Cat Doom
39:23Grant:Pass has been overrun Only the spray bottle remains I'm going to say Okay, can we create a game development document That maps out 12 levels of Cat Doom Each with increasing difficulty And harder, scarier cats to manage And can we then level by level implement each of these using sub-agents if necessary to code all of the levels.
39:55Grant:Okay, we'll let that cook. Let's see what's happening with the 3D models. All three built without errors. Okay. Oh, we're getting there. What is happening here? It's a little cog burn. it is I have a feeling it looks a little bit like a Lego man are we able to zoom in yeah I'm not so good with Blender that's fair and I don't have a mouse plugged in you look like me fumbling around in Illustrator every time somebody sends me an Illustrator file I open it and I click something and I'm like what have I done okay Is there a Zoom thing? He's still working. We're going to give him credit until it works.
40:44Grant:Okay.
40:48He has a camera. He's doing something down there. He does have an amusing brambling jack that looks a little bit like the COVID virus.
40:58Grant:Yeah, look at what he's working on.
41:04Okay.
41:05Grant:Okay, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to save this. or I'm going to screenshot this. I'm going to say, so here's this one and I'll take a picture of this one. There's a distinct difference here, Claude. Yes, exactly. So take a look at these two images and tell me how they're different and why the one on the left looks like the way it does and why it doesn't look like the one on the right. And maybe it looks like you opened MS Paint.
41:40Grant:there is a lot better models you can use by the way to help Claude make better assets I will also say that Brambling Jack is not Brambling Jack but he is terrifying I mean this is kind of a cool character he's a bit of a menace
42:00Grant I'm going to need you to send me that image I'm going to use it as my token Friday night on our map
42:08Grant:let's see the solar system's got something for us to reveal oh okay all right here you go daniel here's your wild uh suggestion as an svg so we've got the cleaper belt then uranus and neptune saturn with the smoke cloud with a ring jupiter and you got the asteroid belt where it punched through and you've got mars the tip of the volcano moon is the ash cloud earth is the outer surface vena let's say this let's say okay that was cool but like can you make that 3d
42:51i'm waiting for the response a 3d vision is a good version is a good fit wait let's say
42:59Grant:hold on let's use 3js bro let's not let's not mess around here how come i got microsoft paint
43:09and it's like whoa let me go build you something on a fancy axis
43:13Grant:here's this demo app we asked it to research and make and as you can see i asked what is this why did you make this it says it's cold case a root cause bug detective built on cloud fable 5.1 and then it's running on my local host and it says you handed a repo and a symptom that nobody has been able to explain it investigates with read search and run tools proves the mechanism why this app fables 5.1 launch story is millennium it explained to crash their engineers and every other model had failed on four to five years root cause debugging is where 5.1's gains are widest and it puts all three new API features on screen at once.
43:58I still don't understand.
44:01Grant:I'm going to tell it that. That's cool and all, but I still don't understand. I still don't get it. When would I use this? Why is it a front-end UI? What are you doing? 30-second tangent here that is something I really hope is happening with AI right now is I hope somewhere people are digging out cold cases and like running them into these models because I feel like it would make a wild TV show. Like, all right, today we're going to take this file and feed it to here. And then we're going to go arrest Tom at the hardware store. How about this? Let's make an actual cold case researcher tool. Like, go out and web search.
44:44Grant:What is the technology missing for CSIs and detectives? What do they need to help them solve cold cases? How can you search through all of the volumes of old data that is out there, you know, publicly available data, in order to help detectives solve their cold cases? Now, that's a real, actually cool use of AI. It really is. That's why I interrupted with it is I was like, you know, thousands and thousands of cold cases. Think in the physical world, man. Make Flappy Bird, but with superpowers.
45:25Grant:Ask and you shall receive.
45:30Grant:Please make Flappy Bird game, but with superpowers. Oh, one greater than Flamingo speed power J key, two faster power K key, and make it in a single HTML file. I like that you said Flamingo instead of Flaming. well it's bird related so you can tell it's the end of the day can't you we're getting we're getting some flamingos up in here okay
45:57Grant:oh also the transcription didn't quite land here it says please make floppy bird
46:05Grant:floppy bird i do love the text this speech it's so much fun what's funny come out with that bird from Dumb and Dumber. I don't really use this as much as, like, I work from home, and I still don't talk to it as much as you would think. Like, a lot of times, it's easier for me to channel my thoughts if I'm writing. I guess that's how you know I'm a writer. Everybody's different. Yeah. I use it a lot when I'm, I have one of those treadmills under my desk. And when I'm using it, I'll spin up, like, two or three windows and get them doing things, just using my voice. But it really is, like, the superior way to do it if you can do it.
46:42It can read through the gobbledy mess that you speak and get your point. Speaking of
46:49Grant:a gobbledy mess, should we see what its critique of Cogburn was? Yeah. It says, here's the honest read. How the two differ. Style target. Galactic cell-chaded anime. Three flatmans. Violet tinted shadows. Ink outlines. Okay, so it's trying to make it look like... You've oversold yourself a little there, Claude. Yeah. Mine is about two. It's trying to make it look too much like the game I'm working on. So it's getting confused because I'm starting it in a project from scratch. I think it'd probably be easier. Yeah. Yeah. We've definitely not set it up for success, but that's okay. Make it replicate the source image verbatim.
47:34Read after why it came out that way.
47:36Grant:Why it came out that way. I made a style decision you never asked for. I built up chunky primitives at cheapy scale because that's the cheapest thing that reads as a character. What the... Oh, okay. Okay, we have something. This is like a Lego, man. I'm going to need that too, Grant. I'll send it to you. Pretty pleased. Interesting. Okay, cool. I made a decision you never asked for. Yeah. you know what say what you will about Claude he is honest when he messes up he owns it I think the catch is that he then tried to pawn it off as chibi style anime yeah and like no no now this is pretty cool so this is the solar volcano system so Daniel eat your heart out you've got lava flying out too do you see it Yeah, this is nice.
48:37Grant:This is very cool. Whoa. Now that's wild. You just have to reposition the solar system. I guess, okay, do we think that this is... I don't know. What do we think about this? What do we think about this stream? It's still a volcano. It's just like... It's more like a perceptual volcano. It's not... I think Venus is questionably large. Where is Venus? Oh, this red thing here? Venus is the Mac recorder. Yeah. Especially when compared to Saturn. Let me give it some constructive criticism. Bro, how big do you think Venus is? Who taught you this?
49:29Houghton Mifflin, textbook. these are those books that came out of the came out of the factory
49:38Grant:what is those rare old ones yeah yeah the ones that claude snorted and then they destroyed it have you seen those have you seen those book uh like scanner things they like snort the pages like it's doing the line of something elicit and then and then they just rip the pages out and destroy it. It's like the weirdest loophole ever that you can scan about so long as you delete it. Is there really not a different way? Yeah. So silly. The universe would be a gigantic... Let me give it this feedback. Pausing for one second. My really good friend Daniel says that the universe would be a gigantic volcano with volcanoes all over its surface.
50:22Grant:And that's the visual we're going for here.
50:29Grant:There you go, Daniel. We will try to make your vision come to life. Don't say we never do anything for y 'all here at the Neuron, okay? We live to serve. Okay, here's Floppy Bird. Let's play Floppy Bird. Floppy Bird! I mean, this straight up looks like Floppy Bird. Okay. Oh yeah. Okay, we got the flamingo dash.
51:03Grant:There it was, looking not bad. No, dude. The flamingo. Look at the flamingo.
51:14Flamingo speed.
51:21Oh my god.
51:28That is so funny. You gave it a flamingo speed function. Oh my.
51:34Grant:It's literally what I asked for. Wow. That is amazing. Okay, y 'all. We're cooked. It is over. The human race is over. Yeah. It's just only a matter of time. Do you see, though, how quick you just got close to a passable mobile game? yeah this is why everyone should go watch our uh how to publish an app uh live stream because like you can literally make whether you want to make the universe as a weird volcano or you want to make flamingo happy bird you could do it yeah i literally a philosophy major with who's worked as a journalist for 20 years had a game hit the ios app store today
52:22think about that for just a moment and uh i would share the link but it needs uh it needs this first update to come through first so i'll share it later but but i've got more in the pipe that are coming and uh do just try if you don't do anything just go try i like like it's terrible but it's also delightful if that makes sense
52:50Grant:okay uh okay wow oh oh we okay we've really got some interesting stuff going on here whoa bunch of volcanoes landmines i don't i don't know about this one
53:06Grant:crazy but if you zoom in it's like a bunch of volcanoes you can go into the inner core of the planet
53:20alright
53:21Grant:I think that's that for the volcano project that's pretty cool though let's go ahead and stop that one okay we've been through everything now well it's still working on the actual cold case project yeah see what's going to happen there No, don't allow. Then this is the Cat Doom. So we can maybe play this and wrap it up here. Okay. Oh. Forgot to play. Yeah. Is this just an HTML file? I believe so. I have to look into it. I mean, this is so good, isn't it? This has come so far. Like, if you guys go back and look at, like, the first time we did Cat Doom, it was, like... I've always dreamed of a day when Cat Doom became neat.
54:23What do you mean by that? Like, when it wasn't just kind of a pile of suck.
54:29Grant:Oh, yeah, yeah. This is really good. Like, we'll have to... Oh, okay, here we go. How do I exit? You need to be able to pick up cards. like what you have is a killer starting point that would be really easy to overdo and make bad. Yeah. Like the temptation. It's true. You just start throwing it 50 requests over and over. Oh, yeah. That's kind of what I did with my Squirrel World games. I just made that like out of control. Yeah. Yeah. Squirrel World is great. I know you call it Squirrel World, but because it said Squirrel when I started, that's what I have to call it. Well, yeah, it's it's it's world.
55:11Grant:Squirrel. One of the fable for folks who don't know. Squirrel world. A little squirrel. Such a fun little game. Is it little? Nothing little about it. Yeah, yeah, it's pretty good. You know, it's fun. But I was thinking I needed I need to do something to make it more interesting. This is really cool. Yeah, all of these videos. I made this all with it. Yeah, like I had it. I just like go play the game and record it. Yeah. Like, it's actually so crazy. Like, all these characters, these are all AIs, like, running around, like, stage. Yeah, I had a cool experience the other night, too, where I was like, the mobile game I was working on wasn't getting quite where I wanted.
55:56There was something missing. And I was like, you need to have played one of these games before. And then I said, hey, can you just play it on my iPhone? And it goes, kind of. We can set it up through mirroring. and uh so i set it up through mirroring and it's been an hour playing the game and came back with like all these measurements and all this other stuff and uh i had it play like five different games sort of in the style of what i'm doing and said you know see what's cool what what should we consider what should we not you know i think we've got it pretty built out already but uh And there's something missing.
56:31And I found that over the weekend. But to just watch it sit there and play a game on the computer with my iPhone and basically a simulator was kind of wild. The last cats are coming for you. I made a decision you didn't ask for. It goes down as my favorite AI quote in a hot minute.
56:57Grant, you're muted. I don't know if that's on purpose.
57:01Grant:No, sorry. I think he muted to talk to his computer and then just stayed there. Yeah, so I think what happened is it's locked me out because I haven't finished off the last cats. Okay, there's that one. And then there's one more in here somewhere. Oh, I've not been looking at the minimap. Gamer mistake. Noob, noob mistake. Okay, let's see. see if I can get I have not even noticed the mini map like I keep not while you're playing it's accurate it tells you where the cats are it's pretty good okay so now it should be green so I should be able to get out here let's see oh now the exit's green but how do I let's go we got a second level oh yeah oh with some bigger cats too you see this one do you run out of spray no but you should we should add some new weapons like maybe you get like yarn balls and stuff to distract them like grenades yeah yeah additional weapons yeah catnip to throw in a corner and distract them i'll give it that feedback paper bags oh i'm gonna die but that's okay let's add some additional weapons like let's get catnip to distract the cats yarn balls that are like grenades that you could throw, ties them up.
58:23Yeah.
58:24Grant:And maybe plastic bags and boxes that they can hide in. But each of those get introduced at each subsequent level. Yes. Yeah, new things at each level. More fun and new things at each level, yeah. Yeah. All right, y 'all. I will make this. I will host this on Railway and make it so people can play this and I'll include it in the newsletter. I love it. I love it. Well, everyone, thank you so much for joining today. This has been a lot of fun. And we didn't have time for a full two-hour marathon. But when we saw 5.1 came out, we were like, we should go talk to the people about this and try it in public.
59:00Grant:So thank you. And over 2.0, we're doing a stream on Thursday. So let's definitely plug that. Yeah, Vincent Koch, Koch, Koch, Koch, Koch, Koch, Koch, I'm not sure, is going to be joining us on Thursday. He's the chief architect for OpenClaw. And so we're going to check out OpenClaw, too. and all of the things should be a lot of fun for at least an hour, I think. I'm not sure how long we have him, but either way, we're excited. It should be a lot of fun, and hopefully it'll teach us something new. Is that it? I think it's it. Thank you for joining us. Thanks for watching. Please take a moment to like and subscribe.
59:39It helps us so much. It's a little action, but it makes our day, and we're appreciative you were here chatting and keeping this fun. So we hope every one of you has a great week. And on that note, farewell for now, humans.
59:55Grant:Wait, should I end with one more floppy bird? Into the flamingo speed, into the stratosphere.
From the publisher
Anthropic just released Claude Fable 5.1, its newest frontier model for long-running coding, research, and agentic work.
So naturally, we’re putting it to the test LIVE. 🤖
Early testing suggests Fable 5.1 is faster, easier to work with, and capable of handling massive coding projects, long-form writing, and autonomous agent tasks more efficiently. Every even found that it used less than half as many tokens as Opus 5 in one internal test.
But it has some quirks too. It can blow past word counts, create unnecessary subagents, and occasionally keep working when you tell it to stop.
Today, Grant and Corey from The Neuron are testing those claims for themselves.
We’re putting Fable 5.1 through:
🧠 Complex research and knowledge work
💻 Coding and long-running agent workflows
✍️ Writing, editing, and instruction following
🤖 Autonomous tasks where Claude runs on its own
🛑 Constraint, budget, and STOP tests
🆚 Whatever else the live chat wants us to try
Anthropic also cut cached-input pricing by 75%, potentially making long-running Claude agents significantly cheaper to operate.
Can Fable 5.1 actually become the model you hand a giant task and walk away from?
Let’s find out live.
