In short
Chelsea’s recent 2-1 loss to Manchester United (including Enzo Maresca’s perceived negativity after a goalkeeper red card), Chelsea’s ongoing goalkeeper/centre-back recruitment worries, Chelsea’s EFL Cup 2-1 win over Lincoln City, and debates about Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge and Mikel Arteta’s “handbrake” tactics in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Man City.
Guests
John Obi-Mikel and Chris McCarty (hosts). Special guest announced for Obi-Wan Podcast Live is John Terry (“Mr Chelsea”).
Key claims
Chelsea’s goalkeeper made a “stupid” early mistake leading to a red card; Chelsea need a “top-top” goalkeeper and another top centre-back (with Levi Colwill injured). Maresca should have “smelled blood” and gone for it after United’s sendings off. Arteta used a “handbrake” vs City by starting too defensively (Declan Rice/Zubimendi as holding midfielders) instead of a number 10.
Notable examples
United’s Old Trafford 2-1; Chelsea’s Lincoln City EFL Cup 2-1 (Jorrel Hato, Facundo Buonanotte, Tyreek George); Arsenal/Man City 1-1 (Eze/Saka/Trossard/Maduweke injury). Mourinho at Benfica ahead of Chelsea’s next match.

So going back to London is going to be great. You know, a live show and it's going to be fantastic.
1:50And I mean, the guests we have in huge, huge. Yes. Yeah, we're bringing the big guns this time.
2:22We have to make sure we smash them. Oh, proper, proper. We have to make sure we win the game, obviously. Playing at home, we don't like losing at Stamford Bridge. So it's going to be great. It's going to be great atmosphere. You know, we are bringing back the band, the team, the core of Chelsea Football Club. It's going to be absolutely a great game. One or two stories as well. Yeah, one or two stories about the old days, you know. So it's going to be interesting. It's going to be fun.
4:03A lot of laughter, a lot of things that we can talk about that people have never had us talk about before. So, I mean, when you have, you know, me and JT on the stage, and of course you as well. So it's going to be brilliant. As a Chelsea fan, you need to be there. Yeah, it's going to be awesome. It's going to be awesome. It really is. and we told JT not to bring the shin pads. He carries that wheelie mirror before he goes. He might have them on. I don't know. We wait with interest, but doors open. This is very important information. Doors open 6.30 at the Clapham Grand. Tickets available now.
4:36That's the ob1podcast.eventbrite. That's bright, B-R-I-T-E.com. Tickets available. There's various different price points as well. Opportunity to maybe get a little bit up close and personal with the two Johns as well. All the ticket information can be found there, but we'd love to see you guys coming out for that. That is Monday, October the 13th, doors opening 6.30. We'll be on stage around about eight o 'clock and you're in for an action-packed and entertaining evening with the two Johns. Yeah, it's going to be entertaining, of course, where we're going to have, you know, a chat, obviously, with the fans as well.
5:11You know, we're going to have the fans talking to the fans. They'll be chanting. Yeah, exactly, chanting and, you know, getting some questions from the fans, you know, the fans, You guys are obviously going to be your events as well, where you can ask us both me and JT, you know, questions of your choice. And then, you know, we're there to talk about it. It's our club. It's our football club. And everything we say is on how do we, you know, how do we get the club back to where it belongs? Well, and on that note, so we look forward to seeing you guys there. On that note, John, it's not often I can gloat.
5:43And I think that's why we cancelled it last week. You were pushing this, the inevitable. but we got to reflect on Old Trafford and Man United 2 Chelsea 1 because let's be honest the sending off just changes the whole game plan for Enzo Maresco goes out the window No it does I mean when you go into a huge huge game like that obviously it's still a huge fixture isn't it no matter how you look at it you can say okay Manchester United they're not the Manchester United that they used to be but it's still a huge fixture isn't it it's still a big big fixture so for me it was a big game And when you go into such a game and then after five minutes, your goalkeeper gets sent off, it just changes everything.
6:23All the game plan just goes out of the window. And it's a disappointing way to start the game. Can you create a side-hole? A massive, massive mistake. It's a huge, huge mistake. I mean, he knows that. I mean, I'd rather play the whole game with 11 men and 1-0 down than to play the whole game with 10 men. You know what I mean? So for me, because we know it's Manchester United right now. They know the Manchester United they used to be. I think if we've gone down 1-0 in the first five minutes, it's still 90 minutes to play in the game, including extra time. So we know the way we're playing with the team we have.
7:03We have the better team right now. We could go on to win the game. We could go on to win the game easily. So for him to make such a mistake, you know, you ran out, you came out of your line. Why don't you just pedal back and try to make yourself big and defend the goal and try to make sure Mbwema doesn't score. I think it's a matter of not trusting himself. Because if you trust yourself, a goalkeeper that trusts himself would have pedaled back and gone to his goal line and be, okay, let's see what you've got. Try to beat me. Because I trust myself. I can bet on myself to, you know, to maybe defend the goal.
7:36but he just thought, you know what? I don't trust myself. I have to go out and make a rational decision. It was a rational decision. Let Mbwema come. Face you, face to face. You're the goalkeeper. Make yourself big and try to make the save. But he was like, you know what? I don't trust myself here. So he went out and make a rational decision. A decision that he didn't need to make. So for me, it was a stupid mistake to put your team in that situation. Again, a big game. And we talk about it. I've said it so many times. we should have in this transfer window brought in a top top goalkeeper I know I keep singing I keep talking about it we should have done that we should have done that we can see what Donald Romo is doing now as Manchester City he was the goalkeeper that was out there I know a lot of people have talked about maybe the wage structure yeah but you can find a way around that you can find a way around that he's a top top goalkeeper 26 years of our age you could have found a way around that to make sure that you can fit him into the wage structure but we didn't do that And there is no way, I've said it so many times, from last season, it's going to be incredibly hard for us to win the Premier League with the goalkeeper that we have right now.
8:44Well, the other point to make on that, John, is it's not like Chelsea were not in the market for a keeper because they started this summer for Mike Mignan, the AC Milan, the French goalkeeper. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So the only thing I can... For 15 million. For 15 million. Yeah, exactly. He's now out of contract next summer. So the only thing I can deduce from it is they're waiting, perhaps, to get him on a free. but to your point, you got to win. You can't wait. We want to win now. We want to win yesterday. Not now. We want to win yesterday the Premier League. Last season we want to win. This season we have to win.
9:14We can't wait to get Minyan for next season and then we start, oh no, we've got a goalkeeper. Let's go and win the league. No. Every season is a season where we have to think about winning the league and I thought getting a goalkeeper in a top top goalkeeper that you're going to look back every time and say, you know what? We've got a goalkeeper. We've got a top top goalkeeper. Every top club has got it. every top club. Pep Guardiola notified that. And that's why he, Edison has been absolutely fantastic for City. Absolutely fantastic. He's looking at it and thought, you know what? He's not the same Edison that he used to be.
9:43I need to get rid of him. He did that. He did that. You know, all the emotions, everything. You might say, okay, you know what? It's Edison. Let's give him two, three more years. But it's not the same. Pep Guardiola has to think about the club, the success of the club, the success of the team. How can the team get back to winning ways? And he's thought about it and said, you know what? I need to make a change here. A change that maybe Edison won't like. Some of the players won't like. But I need to think about the club, the team. And he's got Donnarumma. And we can see now when he comes out, he dominates that area.
10:13He makes saves. He's huge. Yes, we can talk about the goal they considered against Arsenal. Maybe a little bit of his mistake. But yes, it does happen. But the saves that he's been making, you can see... Over a season, he's going to save points. Over a season, exactly. So that's what you need. A top goalkeeper wins you the league. Yes, we'd say it. The strikers win you games. But the defense and the goalkeeper win you trophies. They'll win you trophies. So we have to get a top-top goalkeeper. City have it now. Liverpool have it in Alisson. Arsenal, Rhea, we need that. Yes, he's been a little bit better from last season, Sanchez.
10:53He's a good shortstopper. Yes, he's a good shortstopper. But... His decision-making. His decision-making sometimes. It's a bit rash. He makes a lot of mistakes. And to win the league, you need a goalkeeper who's calm, who makes less mistakes, and who the players and the team and the fans can be able to depend on. The problem with this podcast, John, is I find myself more on Chelsea fan forums than I do anyone else these days. And I mean that. And I was on them afterwards. And honestly, John, the amount of criticism, forget Robert for a second, the Renzo Maresca got for being too, quote-unquote, negative in the changes that he made of course Jorgensen had to come on first of all you need a bleeding goalkeeper and then the change to take on Pedro Neto who was so frustrated he gave a big a big score he's one of our best players this season he's been brilliant he's been brilliant and you know I'm a fan brings on Torson goes to a back five now you and I were speaking about this off air you can understand it in that moment because United are under pressure yeah he's looking to frustrate United started a game as well They were brilliant.
11:57Very, very brilliant. Opening five. Yeah, exactly. They were at it. They played a game really well. But he's went to a back five. Obviously, at this point, Cole Palmer's still on the pitch. Joe's up top on his own. And he's thinking to himself, if I can get through the next 20, 25 and frustrate, this crowd is going to turn on this more. Yeah, they're going to turn on the manager. Yeah, yeah. I think that's what he thought he was going to do. But again, this is not the same Manchester United that we know. This is not a good Manchester United side. So I think that's probably where the fans are coming from.
12:25You shouldn't go too defensive. You know what? Go after Manchester United. Go after them. Even with 10 men, I still believe, most of our fans still believe that we could still go on and win the game. We're a much better team. We have better players. And of course, it didn't help that Cole Palmer as well got injured. Because I think if Cole Palmer was still on the pitch, he wouldn't be too negative, obviously, with most of the changes that he had to make. Because if you lose Cole Palmer and you're down to 10 men, it's a bit difficult to try and manage the game. But again, one thing I have to say, we have to put this into consideration as well.
12:59Fofana hasn't played for such a long time. And that's his first game starting the game. So when you go down to 10 men, you're looking at that back line thinking, you know what? I have a defender who hasn't played for such a long time. How do I protect him? How do I cover him? And that's probably why he's decided, you know what? I'm going to go to back five and try to make sure that, you know, that Fofana is not under too much pressure. He doesn't have to spring too much. I don't know what he's, you know, You're coming back from a lung injury. Your hamstring, your cords, everything, your calves, they're all going to be tight.
13:31You know what I mean? So you don't need to sprint too much. You don't need to try to force yourself too much. And I think that's probably why he decided to go there and try to make sure he protects him. Make sure we protect that back line. But yes, a little bit of negativity was there in the changes. And I thought we could have gone for it. We could have gone for it. And also, when Manchester United did go down to 10 men, Castaneda was sent off. I just thought that's the time to go for it. Half-time. Oh, go for it. Because he waited an hour. He took off. He took off. Favanna got through an hour.
14:01And then Tyreek George came on. He brought off Marco Carrea for Gusto. But yeah, talking about this. At half-time. And again, hindsight's a wonderful thing. At half-time, yeah. But Casemiro's gone off. Casemiro's gone off, yeah. You know United are nervy. Does he make changes then? Straight away. Straight away. And that's where he comes down again to top-top managers, big managers. I love it. I love Enzo Mariska. Everybody knows in this sport. I've always defended Enzo. But again, if you want to be a winning coach, if you want to be a winning manager, a manager that has a winning mentality, that's where you go for it.
14:35That's where the likes of Jose Mourinho go for it. I smell blood here. Let's go for it. We're now done. It's now level 11, 10 v 10. Let's go for it. Manchester United at Old Trafford, they're not playing well. They're not having a good season. You know what I mean? The fans, if we can be able to put a little bit of pressure, The fans are going to turn on this manager. We know what's happening there. Put them under pressure. And that's why he failed to do that. That is my only criticism from that game with the manager. Because that's where a Jose Mourinho, a Carlo Angelotti, these top managers, they smell blood, they'll go for it.
15:08Pep Guardiola, they'll go for it. You know what I mean? And he was just a little bit too negative. I don't understand why, but he was just a little bit too negative, obviously. But listen, he will learn from it. He will learn from it. And next time we find ourselves in that situation, he has to make sure that he goes for it. And yeah, it wasn't the best of game. We didn't play great. We didn't play so well. I thought Enzo Fernandez didn't have his best game. And I just thought that's where he would have taken him off and bring up Garnaccio. I just thought that game was crying out for Garnaccio.
15:38He was crying out for Garnaccio. You know, back at Old Trafford, he wanted to show the whole Manchester United fans. What are they missing? Why did you let me go? He's got that arrogance. You can see that. Even there was, at some point, the manager was making tactical changes, talking to his staff. You could see Caracho was trying to listen. He wants to get on the pitch. He's like, Gaffer, get me on. He wants to get me on. And, you know, I thought that game was meant for him. He should have, he should have brought him on. But obviously the manager, you know, the manager decided, you know, he, you know, he didn't have to bring him on.
16:12But again, we talk about a goalkeeper. We can talk about the defense. We can talk about our defense. We're making silly mistakes, silly, silly mistakes we're making. Again, you talk about the Champions League where we considered goals. We made silly, silly mistakes. You know, the Champions League, we considered goals. And again, I talked about it. The goalkeeper situation, the center back situation where we know Levi Colwell is going to be out for such a long time. We should have done those two business, brought in another top, top center back and a top, top goalkeeper. We know Cole well. It's our best, best defender.
16:48Is he a world-class defender right now? No. He has the potential to become a world-class defender. He has the potential. So for me, if you lose your best, best center back and the transfer window is still open, go ahead and get another top, top center back. We can see it now. We're conceding way too many goals. I've said it. I don't believe tossing is the answer. No. Chaloba, I like. I think he's good. I think Chaloba has the potential to become. He's quick. He's strong. For final, we know he hasn't played for such a long time. I don't believe Torsten is the guy. I don't believe he is the guy to lead our defense.
17:22I don't believe that. We should have gone out and gotten another top top center back. So with that in mind then, John, goalkeeper, you've said it. You're not quite sure he's there. With Colwell not there, and he's expected to miss a number of times this season. So with all of that said, this Chelsea team can win, though. I don't think so. I hope we can. I hope we should. but with the current squad we have right now, going forward is fantastic. Creating chances. It's good to stay called Palme again, back scoring goals, creating chances. You know what I mean? He could be out for a while. Exactly, now he's going to be out for a while.
17:55You know what I mean? So for me, I just believe that the centre-back situation, even when we leave at Colwell City there, I still believe we need another one. We need another one alongside him. We can see that Liverpool, Giorgio Van Dijk, Conate, Manchester City, Ruben Diaz, Johnstone, Gvadio, you know, Arsenal, Gabriel, Soliba. You need the spine of the team. You need a two top, top centre-backs. And I just feel like we need another top, top centre-back alongside Levi Colwell. For me, once we be able to sort out that position and a goalkeeper, I think we will be challenging to win the Premier League.
18:33But right now with the squad that we have, the Premier League, it's tough. It's a tough, tough league to win. It's a marathon. It's not a sprint. it's a marathon and everyone I know Liverpool are five from five but everyone because there are weaknesses I look at every team and I think well you're weak there there's definitely you're susceptible there I think everyone's going to take points off everyone the strength and depth of the Premier League Liverpool are not going to go on beating no they're not going to go on beating this season we've seen that they've struggled to win games they've won games at the last minute of the games of games so for me they will draw points everybody will draw points and for us as well last season the reason why we didn't go on to win the league or we're not there come the end of the season to challenge to win the league, we drew way too many games.
19:18Chris, I'm just telling you. We drew way too many games and we don't want to do that this season. Those difficult games, those small games, games against the likes of Brentford, Wolves, all this, not due respect to anybody, all these lesser teams, we failed to win those games last season. We drew way too many games last season and we saw that again against Brentford. withdrew again 2-2. So for me, those are the games we have to win. The games against big teams, I'm not too worried about it because it's an open game. It's an open game. But when you play games like teams that come sit back and try, okay, show us what you got.
19:52How do you break us down? We fail to break those teams down. We've drew way too many of those games and we have to find a way. We said it last season. Enzo Moreska have to find a way of winning those games. Those lesser games, we have to find a way of winning because those are the games that get you come the end of the season of if we drew way too many of those games we're not going to be there we're not going to be there we have to win those games the bigger teams i'm not worried about because it's going to be open game when you play against a big team i know that the game is open the game is way too easy not too easy but it's a bit easy but when you play against the smaller teams where the manager is going to be on the touchline screaming why don't you kick him why don't you talk it's tough it's difficult to play against those teams and you have to find a way of breaking them down we have to find a way of, we can't depend on Cole Palmer.
20:39I know now we have Jao Pedro who's coming, he did ground running, scoring goals, but we need to find a way of winning those games. Yeah. And injuries now as well. Obviously, Liam De La Pau, Levi Colwell we've touched on, Cole Palmer is touching goal. You've got to deal with that. But then again, all teams have to deal with that as well. So Chelsea bouncing back. We're recording this episode the morning after the night before EFL Cup, 2-1 win against Lincoln City. Of course, he changed the squad Jorl Hato the young Dutch defender brought in from Ajax he looked good and then Facundo Buonanotte can say that right I think that's right Buonanotte Buonanotte my Spanish coming out I mean he was a bit of a shock sighting to be honest he was at Leicester last season but they clearly see something in him he gets the goal Tyreek George with a goal and an assist and it was all about just winning John I don't think we're going to you know break down the performance it's just about getting the victory yeah I think we have way too many players from Brighton I think Brighton I think we have a discount code with Brighton.
21:39Something like that. I mean, we've taken their players, we've taken their sporting directors, we've taken their chefs, their kit men, everything we've taken from Brighton. It's a discount code. Buy three, get a phone. Get one free. No, I mean, the amount of players we've signed from Brighton is absolutely... Listen, they've all come in and they're doing the business though. They're doing the business. You know, Jao Pedro, Kukurela, now we can say it's fantastic. Kaisedo as well. So yeah, they've been brilliant signings, but yeah, we've taken all their players. Fair play to Brighton though. Thank you.
22:12Thank you very much, Brighton. But no, it wasn't, yeah, a game against Lincoln. I think it was another game that we just had to win. Yeah. You know, when you play these games, you know, you just have to win. How do you get to the next round? And that's what we did last night. But again, we talk about the goalkeeper situation. Joran said, he was all over the place. He was all over the place. He was flapping everything. You know, when he came out, he was flapping everything. He couldn't punch the ball. It was all over the place. You know, listen. It doesn't give me confidence. No, it doesn't give me confidence.
22:41And he's going to be the goalkeeper that we're going to have him, you know, in goal now for the next, what, two, three games? Yeah, straight red. You know, I watched him last night. He was all over the place. In fact, it's only a one-match ban, isn't it? Because he was done. He wasn't done for malicious intent. He was done for professionals. So is he going to miss one match? One league match. I just thought, yeah, we need another goalkeeper. We need another top, top goalkeeper. And I'm sure the club know that. I'm sure Paul and the rest of the guys, you know, Enzo Moreska, they know that. You know, we should have gone out and got a Donnarumma or somebody, another top-top goalkeeper.
23:14And for me, that's why I just worry. You know, I just worry in that situation that, you know, when we don't win those games, when we don't, when we're struggling to win games and now Cole Palmer is going to be out, unfortunately, it's going to be out for I don't know how long. Levi Kohler is going to be out. So... Hopefully you've got a squad. Yeah, we've got a squad, but we need to find the world winning games. I just worry that if we, again, find ourselves in the situation that we found ourselves last season, of not winning those games that we drew way too many of those games last season, it's going to be difficult for us come the end of the season.
23:51Now we have to talk about winning the league and competing to win the league. So when I hear some of those pundits saying that they don't have us, I understand that because we don't have the goalkeeper. I believe we don't have the goalkeeper, a top-top goalkeeper that wins you the Premier League. Yes, he might win you a couple of games here and there, but to win in the Premier League, you need a top-top goalkeeper. Why were we successful back in our day? I know I say it so many times, because we had Peter Cech. We had the best goalkeeper in the league. Yeah, go through all the Premier League title winners, they've all had.
24:23They've all had it. Kasper Schmeichel at Leicester when they won it, and Flowers when Blackburn won it. They've all had... Van der Sar and Manchester United. Van der Sar, Schmeichel. Schmeichel. So, you know what I mean? You're an over-say, Big Pete. Big Pete, yeah. So for me, you need, you know, Manchester City with Edison for so many years. So you need a goalkeeper. Trust me, when you have a top-top goalkeeper and you're walking into the games and you look back at your goalkeeper, you know who you have in goal. It does give you confidence. It does give you a bit of confidence. It does give you a bit of confidence.

24:53I don't think now, going into every game, the Chelsea fans look at every game and say, you know what? I'm quite confident here with the goalkeeper we have in goal. No. Are we confident with the team, with the squad, with the players to create chances to score goals? Yes, of course we do. Because I believe we have a great squad. But in goal, for me, it's a major worry. It's a situation where we have to sort out. And I am pretty sure the club absolutely know that. Absolutely know that. I just felt that. We don't know. Available. Available. Available. in this we should have got him we should have got him I know he's not great with his feet we can see that but what the goals that he saves he wins he's a goalkeeper that will win your trophy we've seen that he's a goalkeeper that will win your trophy so for me we have to sort that position out I want to get to City Arsenal because Mikel Arteta is he's a bit shocked at the criticism he's received at the weekend we will get to that but he's shocked he's shocked there's a shock that Mikel has shocked but I've got to ask your ex-boss is back he's shed the skin of Fenerbahce sorry Jose he's taken off the skin of Fenerbahce he's taken off exactly that's been removed I remember when he signed he said your your your shirt is my skin it's now not apparently we're never on his level I didn't message him I didn't message the boss when he got that job at Fenerbahce listen listen, having played in Turkey, I know the situation in Turkey.
26:30Turkish football, I know. It's a fantastic league. No worry about that. But it's a league that you never know what's coming. You never know what's happening. You can't control the situation. He said it was never on his level. He's come out to say, he's made a mistake. He shouldn't have gone to Turkey. He's now found himself back in Lisbon, Benfica. Yeah, I love this, John. He talked about the fact he's now more altruistic. And I saw that word and thought, better get the solstice out. So essentially he's saying that he's now more unselfish. He's more caring to other people. He said that he's no longer...
27:06I know the boss. I know the boss, isn't it? Like saying Fenerbahce is not his level. Maybe, maybe, yes, of course, that Jose Mourinho, maybe he might be right if Fenerbahce was not his level. He was in there. He knows what he is. But I mean, coming again from that comment that he meant when he took off at the job, I remember texting him saying, boss, be careful. And then he sent me a message back saying, you know, yeah, yeah, I know what I'm doing here. But, you know, unfortunately, he's gone the way he's gone. Listen, Jose is a top, top, top, top manager. He's still a top manager, in my opinion.
27:38And going back to Benfica, he feels that's where he belongs. Now he's back in the Champions League. He's back to where he thinks he belongs. Don't believe Jose wants, not for one second, when he says he's not an ego-efficient manager. No, Jose needs the ego. He needs the ego to succeed. That's what spurs him on. That's what motivates Jose. That's what motivates him to win trophies, to win games. Without that ego, Jose, trust me, without the ego that he has, that spurs him on, that motivates him, that when he walks on the pitch, he walks with his ego, with his head held on. That's what motivates Jose.
28:17He needs that ego. Don't buy into that, mate. He's trying to fool us here. No, boss, I know who you are. he started he needs that ego to be able to win games and you can see that again what he's back in the bridge next week yeah you see that ego coming out I don't worry about that yeah you're right because he would love obviously Benfica beaten in their opening Champions League game by Canabag that ultimately led to Bruno Lagi's sacking Josie's in he'll fancy it next week oh he'll fancy it they actually drew 1-1 last night Benfica had a disappointing result Rio Ave 91st minute equalizer finished one apiece at home at the Estadio to lose as well.
28:52So disappointing. He wants to win games, obviously. Disappointing, yeah. I think he won his first game and drew the game at home now. Listen, Jose is a winner. He's a winner. He's going to find a way to win games again and bring Benfica to where they belong, obviously. But I'm sure Benfica, they know who they gain. They gain somebody who's going to come in with character, with winning mentality, with everything, everything to win games and to win trophies. That's what Jose does. He wins trophies. Unfortunately, he didn't get to win any trophy at Fenerbahce, but he wins trophies. You can tell he wasn't happy at the end of the day at Fenerbahce.
29:27But he wins you trophies. He wins you games. And that's what he's going to do. Going back home as well, Portugal, where he's from, I think he's going to be more comfortable. He's going to be more comfortable there. Yeah, he's going to find a way to win games. Benfica is a huge club, massive club, back in the Champions League, back in the bridge next week. and that's something that's going to motivate Jose. He's going to motivate him. He's going to be like, you know what? I'm going to come back to the bridge, bring my team here to win this game. To win this game. Because now he's going to look at a team thinking, you know, there's no Levi Cole.
30:04There's no going to be a Cole Palmer. You know what I mean? So I smell blood here. I smell blood here. Yeah, I agree. He's going to think, you know, I'm going to come here and try to frustrate the team. He's going to try to have the fans behind him, whatever it is to make sure the Chelsea fans get behind him in some kind of way. He'll be charming. Yeah, exactly. But I think with the team that we have, I think we'll just be a bit too strong for them. And Benfica, then we'll keep an eye that they become now our second team, John, for this podcast. We'll be keeping an eye on Jose because he's box office.
30:37Oh, he's box office. And the fact that his time in Turkey didn't work out. Yeah. He's 62 now. He's been around the block a few times, but you can bet your life he's got that chip on the shoulder. He will want to reassert himself. He'll want to prove himself again by winning trophies. Of course. No doubt that. Of course he wants to do that. I think that's what Jose does. Anywhere he goes, he wins trophies. I think that's why, obviously, when you bring in a Jose Mourinho to your football club, you bring in a manager, a top-top manager who knows how to win trophies. Yes, he's 62 years old. Are you going to say maybe the game has evolved a little bit past him?
31:14Maybe. But he's still a top-top manager. It's box office. The Premier League, I believe, needs him. There's a few clubs in the Premier League that I think will do with Jose Mourinho right now. I believe that. You know, you're talking about West Ham, you know, you know, your mate, your partner. No comment. They could do with Jose Mourinho right now. But now he's going to Benfica. So you bring in a Jose Mourinho, you bring in a manager that knows how to win trophies. You talk about Chelsea Football Club. He transformed us into who we are today. There's no question about that. You can't deny that.
31:45when he come into the football club, when Abramovich bought the football club, he identified a manager. Who is the manager that's going to come in and win me trophies? Jose Mourinho. And, you know, twice in a row, we won the Premier League. So for me, he's a manager that wins you trophies. And he did that for us. And he's going to do that with his Benfica side as well. He will never stop thinking about winning trophies. That's not in his DNA. The day Jose Mourinho stops about, stop thinking about winning trophies, that's what he's done. That's what motivates him. That's what motivates him. And with that ego that he has, it doesn't matter where he goes.
32:21He wants to win trophies. And it's going to be very interesting to see when he comes back to the bridge, how our fans are going to welcome him. I think he's going to feel like this is my home, this is my place. But I just think that night we have to find a way to win because I just think with the squad that we have right now, yes, probably we're not going to have a Cole Palmer, a Levi Cole, but I think we might have, Listen, we don't know the extent of Colt Palmer's injury right now, but if he's not playing, I just think we might be too strong for Benfica that night. Yeah, right. I wanted to go from one man who's made a career of winning trophies to a man who's got just one on his CV.
32:59Sorry, Mikel. Mikel Arteta, Arsenal. A lot of strange... Is he going to win? I thought you said he won the... FA Cup, right? Yeah, no, I thought you said he's got two. What else has he won? I think he said he won the Community Shield. Oh, no. You know, Jose started that. I don't belong right now. Jose started that. That's nonsense. You're not getting the community shield. That's not a trophy, mate. But Jose thinks it is weirdly. I am with you, John. The community shield's not a place. It's a friendly game. Exactly. It doesn't want to see the stats. If we're adding that, we may as well add the pre-season trophies as well.
33:32He's got one Emirates FA Cup, Mikel Arteta. Strange though, John. 1-1 with City at the weekend. Dominated. Yeah. In Arsenal. Let's give them their due. I think the stat, just over 33 % possession City have the lowest. That's the lowest, isn't it? In over 600 league games. In February or less. I mean, that is an incredible stat, that. So Arsenal deserve a little bit of credit. But I'm seeing a lot of negativity saying that the handbrake was on, that he was a little bit too pragmatic. Where do you sit on this? Listen, I can understand where the Arsenal fans are coming from. I think, yes, there was a little bit of handbrake to start the game.
34:08I know a lot of people have talked about Eze should have started the game. Yes, definitely should have started the game. Because when you look at this city side, you know, a huge respect to Pep Guardiola. I mean, for me, one of the greatest managers that we've ever had in the game. You can talk about Alex Ferguson, Carlo Angelotti, and Pep Guardiola. Obviously, Jose Mourinho as well, and that mix as well. So for me, this is the worst. With respect, this is the worst Pep Guardiola side at this city. City, Manchester City. that he's ever had. For me, I think it's a team that is under - Evolving.
34:46It's in transition. Too many changes. Too many, you know, transition. You know, he's just finding a way. Brought in way too many players. Too many changes. You know, change his backroom staff. Change his sporting director. Change all the players. You know, goalkeeper. Everything. Way too many changes. It's a team that's in transition. You can feel that. So, they're not there. They're not gelling. So, for me, that's why I say it's the worst Manchester City side that Pep Guardiola's ever had. So, for me, taking that into consideration, Having said all that, that is where Mikhail Ateta would have attacked the city side.
35:16He would have gone for it. He would have gone for it. I smell blood here. This is not the city side that we know, that we all come to know. So for me, with the starting lineup, I just thought, yes, play Declan Rice and Zubamendi as a two pivot, two holding midfield players. Why not play as a number 10? Why do you have to start a Moreno and play three midfield players? You didn't need that. There's no need for that. Aze would have started. If Odegaard was there playing, he would have started as a number 10. So why was there a handbrake? Why was there a handbrake when it comes to the starting 11?
35:50Because they beat them 5-1 last season as well. Exactly, he beat them 5-1 last season. So for me, this is a city side that are not playing well, that are, you know, in transition with the players that they've brought in. So for me, I just thought Mikel Ates. Again, it comes down to the winning mentality. Aslan's not a winning side. He hasn't tasted. Mikel Ateta doesn't know. He's trying to implement it. He's trying to find it. Exactly. He doesn't. A manager that's won the Premier League would have known that and thought, you know what? A manager that wins titles would have known, you know what?
36:22I'll go for this. I'll go. I fancy us today. I'm going to take risk. We're playing at home. Our fans behind us. I play two holding me three players and a number 10. Can I ask you? This is the free role to go out there and create chances and make sure that we create chances to win the game. You can't play three holding Miffy players because it doesn't matter how you look at it. Moreno, Declan Rice, and Zuboff, they're all three holding Miffy players. Bring in a number 10, play A's as a number 10 behind Xocharez. Two great chances. Why put on a home break? I don't get it. So I can understand the frustration from an Arsenal side.
36:58But again, it comes down to Arsenal. It's the DNA of Arsenal. They don't know how to win trophies. They have no idea what it takes to do. That game, when you look back at it, come the end of the season, that might be the game where you look back and thought, we missed that out of here. Because there's been all of this money, right? And I look at the squad now and I think on paper, it might just be the strongest squad in the Premier League. It is the strongest. Okay. It is the strongest. I wouldn't disagree with that. In terms of depth. It is two players in every position. So you've spent all of this money.
37:32You've got, to your point, John, the strongest squad in the Premier League now. But you've lost at Liverpool. pool 1-0 okay worldy of a free game yeah yeah but you still lost but you still lost you've now drawn 1-1 with city that's your two title rivals question i would ask you've been in these dressing rooms are the players looking at one another does that seed a doubt in them that maybe we're not ready of course does it of course because when when when the fixtures do come out at the start of the season you look at it and you look at the fixtures again we i've talked about it we've talked about it we've had people here legends in this podcast that play for manchester united play for big clubs they've said it yeah what do you look at the big guys the big teams you look at it and say if we get three points here two points uh one point here three points here with the from the big boys we know we we you know we're almost there we look at it back in the days we thought okay we have to go to manchester united and win that game if we can go there and win that game that puts us in a good position.
38:32If we go to Arsenal, which is always a given for us, you know, we'll be to Arsenal. Can't help yourself. No, if we go to City, City went as big back then. You know, who are we talking about? Arsenal, you know, so when you look at those teams, Spurs, yeah, we look at those teams, Spurs also a given for us. So when you look at those teams, you have to go there and believe and have to believe in the mentality that, you know, we have to go here and win. We have to, this is where we have to win. This is where we win the title. This is where the titles are won. So if you've drawn against City now, won all, you lost against Liverpool, the players are looking at it thinking, okay, even if we win the league now, beating the smaller teams, that doesn't really make you title winners because you didn't beat any of the big boys.
39:21You have to beat the big boys. You know what? Look back at it, come the end of the season, you know, tap yourself on the shoulder and say, you know, we did it. We did it by beating the big boys and that's how we won the league. So for me, it's, you know, it's again, tentative selection. You know, he wasn't sure, Mikel Ateta. I've said it so many times, credit to the guy. He's done so well, Mikel Ateta. He's built a good, good squad. The strongest squad in the Premier League, not just in the Premier League, I might say in, you know, in Europe right now. National, in terms of depth. Mental. Their bench, it was incredible.
39:58Oh, in terms of that, the squad is complete. Absolutely complete. And I'm happy that Mikel Ateta has come out and said it. There is no excuse of not winning the Premier League. This is no excuse. Come the end of the season, there's no excuse not winning the Premier League. Listen to this, Mikel Ateta. You cannot win the Premier League by making those selections last game against City. You have to go for it. You have to go for it. It's a City side that's not playing well. Eze, Saka came on, of course, Maduweke injured, Marino dropped off. And also Maduweke, I was playing really well, he took him off.
40:33He was injured. He's out for two months, John. Okay. That's a big blow. Okay, that's a big blow. So Saka came on, and again, but again, it's a blow, but they've got the score for it. They've got the score for it. Trossard, his first start in a while. And again, he was asked about that. He said he just felt that Trossard was in a good place to come in. He obviously scored the goal against athletic Bobau. But again, I look at it and it's harsh because it's like, well, you did dominate. Yeah. But then what did you create? It didn't clear all that much. Yes, you can say, yes, City, pack the balls.
41:00Listen, I know everybody's saying now, Pep Guardiola and City side, they pack the balls. Pep is allowed one game in what, 10 years? Give the guy a break. Please, give the guy a break. And listen, I don't think they actually pack the balls. Like you're saying, listen, they scored a goal. They were ahead. What do you expect them to do? Be open and let you come and break them down? No. Yes, they scored a goal. they were leading the game and they decided you know what big mentality big players it's like you know what how do we how do we have control of this game they decided you know what let's sit back and try to defend and counter attack I mean you wouldn't say they packed the bus but listen Pep everybody criticizing Pep oh yeah yeah one game in 10 years come on give the guy a break I mean it was a it was a game whereby he knows they're not playing well he's just trying to figure out what is his best team how do this team play He's trying to evolve with the game.
41:55He's trying to be more transitional, quick. You know, Pep, right now, he's tinkering with the game. He's tinkering with the game. He doesn't know what exactly how the city side is going to play. So for me, give the guy a break. I mean, he deserves to have one game where his side kind of like defended deep and trying to counterattack. And he can never win either because in this new style, it's more direct style. And we've spoken about it off-air, Joe. The fact that Pep Linders, his new assistant, formerly Jurgen Klopp's assistant at Liverpool, he's got his he's got his ideas he's got his ideas yeah and you can see as well there's a little bit of an idea now coming into this city side you know they're a bit more a little bit more direct when you look at the way this city side play they're a bit more direct Haaland gets it more Haaland gets it more more touches yes the touches there you know they're a bit more direct which is what this city side needs and listen if you give Haaland the space to run behind you you know it doesn't matter what defense you have you're dead you know the guy gets two chances and scores one like he is top, top, top, top class finisher.
42:54Top class finisher. And he looks like he's back, you know, he's back. Last season, he has a team, didn't play well. You can see his body language was a little bit off. His body language is back to where, you know, the Haaland that we know. And I did say it. Yes, we all love Jack Grealish. I'm a massive fan of Jack Grealish. I think he's a fantastic player. We can see what he's doing at Everton. But I just think Pep Guardiola has looked at it and thought, you know, he was very, very close to Haaland. very close. I think he was probably his best mate at the club. And Pep has looked at it. And maybe the senior players that look at it and thought, you know what?
43:30For us to get Haaland back, we need Jack Glish to move on. We need to move on. Somebody, Haaland doesn't need that distraction. He needs to focus on the game. He needs to get back to the Haaland that we know. And I think Pep thought about it and looked at it and thought, you know what? Jack, I love you. You've helped this club win multiple Premier Leagues, win the Champions League, but I think it's time for you to move on now. We have to make sure that we get Haaland back to where he belongs. And you can see now, he's more focused, he's more determined, he's more hungry now. He wants to get back to scoring goals, which is what he does.
44:05His body language, he looks at himself now as one of the leaders at that club. So it's brilliant. And we talked about it. I think he's going to become, he's going to become, he will be come the end of the season. I think the top goal scorer. If he He keeps going the way he's going now. The fastest player to score 50 Champions League goals. And he's only 25, 24, 25. 49 games. Mental. Previous record. I think Ruud had the Ruud van Nistrooy 62 games. And only 49 games. 49 games. It's crazy. It's crazy. I mean, going this rate, the rate is going. You can see this guy breaking all, if he stays fit.
44:41Alan Shearer's record will be gone. If he stays fit, I don't see any, I see him breaking all records. I agree with that. Right, let me ask you this question. Million dollar one. Who wins a Premier... I'll change that. Who wins a league title first? Jose or Mikel? Oh, you mean Jose at Benfica? Yes. Oh. Who gets the league title first? Jose or Mikel? Listen, I'll go ahead and back Jose Mourinho. I'll go ahead and back Jose Mourinho. I don't think Mikel Ateta is going to win the Premier League this season. I don't think Mikel Ateta is going to win the Premier League. I said it. if he doesn't win it this season, respect to Michael Ates.
45:20Respect to Michael Ates. And I'm sure every Arsenal fan will agree with me. And I'm happy that you can see now most of the Arsenal fans, they're saying it. They've come out and they start saying it. If he doesn't win it this season, gotta make me change. They're happy for him to walk away. Put your hands up. I've built you a fantastic squad. But unfortunately, I'm not that guy to take you over the line. I'm not that guy to win the Premier League for you. Fantastic manager, done so well for the football club since Arsene Wenger left the football club. He's that manager that's come in and steadied the ship and brought back Arsenal to where, no, no way they belong because they haven't won anything yet.
45:58But sort of to the top. Yes. With the squad that they have. And sometimes you just have to put your hand up and say, you know what? I've done my best. I've done everything I could, but unfortunately I'm not that guy. So if he doesn't win it this season, put your hands up. And everyone is going to respect him for that. Walk away. So for me, that question, ask back Jose Mourinho to win the league first before... I thought you'd say that. It's a tough one this weekend as well. On Sunday, they go to Newcastle this upcoming weekend. It doesn't get any easier. The Premier League doesn't get any easier, mate.
46:28There's no games in the Premier League now that is easy. There's none. We can see what Sunderland are doing. We can see what Leeds are doing. The Premier League is tough. It's tough. 38 games, you have to be honest. You have to be honest. it that's why when we talk about it the big teams we chelsea arsenal when you go to play these games the smaller teams they're gonna come pack the bus if you call it that way find a way to break them down yeah find a way because those are the games come the end of the season if you drew way too many of those games you're gonna look back come the end of the scene and thought and say you know what we failed to break these smaller teams down we could have gone for it we could have been more pragmatic and that's what I want Enzo Moriska to do.
47:11We drew way too many of those games last season. We have to find a way of winning those smaller games. It's a big one. Those lesser games. Big one this weekend for your boys. Chelsea taking on their feeder club, John. Brighton. That's Stamford Bridge. That's a tough game. It's a tough game. Brighton off the back of their good win last night. They were on the road. Diego. They looked good, Brighton. For four goals. Again, deep squad. He's able to make changes there for Erwin Herzler. 2-0 up at Tottenham last time out. Finished 2-2. They've already beaten City. They'll be a difficult game. They look good.
47:41They look good, Brighton. Good team. It's going to be a tough game for us. It's going to be a tough game for us. We've seen it. Brighton, they're playing well. We've seen it. They were leading against Spurs on goal, which is what, you know, which killed them. Unfortunate, yeah. Just killed them. But no, the team looks good. They're playing well again. There's an identity again, Brighton, the way they play. I think there's a little bit of that that's gone out when Dezebio, left. And now you can see that starting to come back. Brighton, they're a team that like to dominate the game and they're very good going forward.
48:15And you can see that. They're very exciting to watch, Brighton. Every time I watch Metoma, Mete, they're very direct and I love to watch that. So for me, it's going to be a good game. It's going to be a really good game. So it's a game we have to win. I know they're the team that we've got discount code with them. But yeah, I mean, we have to find a way of winning. It's going to be a tough game. but I just think with the team that we have right now the way we're playing I think we just we might just have a bit a bit too much even with Jorgensen in goals yeah even Jorgensen you know we have we have to back him right now we have to support him because that's what we've got yeah the transfer window is closed it's shut so we have to do what we have so we have to back whoever is in goals Sanchez support him you know every time they play but I just think when the transfer window opens again it's a position we have to strengthen.
49:07So the game is what it is. Again, it's Brighton. Again, we have to win. So we have to put ourselves back again, you know, in that mix, you know, in terms of trying to win the Premier League because that's what I think, that's what we should be thinking about this season. How do we get back to win the Premier League? Because we haven't won the Premier League for a while now. How do we win the Premier League? How do we contend to win the Premier League? You know what I mean? Last season, we were there, just come towards December, we sort of fell off, you know. That's it, it was December. Yeah, exactly.
49:39So we have to make sure that we're there, you know, we're there. You know, yes, we have a young squad, but it's a squad that's, that's been together now for a while, been together now for a while. Won trophies. Exactly. So we have to now start thinking about, yes, exactly. Next step is winning the Premier League and competing to win the Champions League because that's where we belong. So, and I'm sure Enzo Mariska knows that. Right, I'm conscious, John. What is it? Wednesday 24th of September you are going to be running out at the bridge on the 11th I need to let you go and run are you working out are you going to be what's the what's the next two and a half weeks looking like please tell them you're in shape I'm in shape mate I'm proud I tell you what you are in shape I'm proud to do my bit you know how I know you're in shape and we got a lot of love on the video if anyone's seen our bet winner Coco Cabana Beach video oh yeah yeah you had the abs out the amount of messages that we got, John, on your physique.
50:33You could still be playing. No, I do try to work out every day. Obviously, the weekend, you know, it's a family day, it's a kids' day. Unfortunately, you can't do anything on the weekends because when you have the kids, they're like, Daddy, let's do that. You know, you have no time. So Monday to Friday, I try to get a workout. I play a lot of paddle. I, you know, I run. I do a little bit of teamwork. Just trying to keep myself fit, you know. I'm a guy that enjoys being fit. Are you the same weight as you were when you played? Yeah, yeah, I think so. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. I think when I was playing at my peak, at my best, I was weighing 80, 83, 84 kilos.
51:21That's all. Yeah, yeah. And right now, yeah, I think I'm the same. Pretty much the same, yeah. I try to keep saying. I'm not going to tell you what I am. Suck the belly in. I wouldn't say I'm upset, but I try to keep myself fit. I'm very, yeah, yeah. I'm very. Driven. Driven and very cautious of, I look at myself. I'm like, oh, you put on one or two here. Now it's time to go get out. You know, I'm very, you know what I mean? Your vein is what you're doing. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, listen, I don't blame you, John. When you play to the level, when you look like a million pesetas. Yeah, when you play at that level for such a long time and it's something you've done every day.
52:05So for me, it's a lot of people, you know, people say they, you know, every morning they wake up, they have espresso cappuccino and that's what gets them moving. No, for me, it's workout. Fair play. If I work out, that's what gets me going. That's it. Day continues. I have to get it. I have to get a workout in. I have to, I have to go out, sweat a bit, go for a run, go for a walk, get in the gym, do something that's where my day starts so for me it's always been that I tell you what if Steven Gerrard's watching this he is coming for you okay 2-0 down from that first leg Peter Crouch might be watching this as well he's coming for you so we're looking forward to it that is Saturday October the 11th at the bridge it's going to be a full house it's going to be a brilliant game it's going to be great fantastic game yeah yeah all mates I don't know who's going to be there but apparently you know there's a few names already in the list I don't know if I should say those names out I think they're right there Marcel Desaiz Yeah, Matthez is out.
52:57Yeah, Eden Hazard is out. Diego Costa, of course, the crazy guy is coming back to the bridge. So it's going to be fantastic. It's going to be a great game. You know, just being back, you know, in the dressing room with those guys, the banter that's going to be flying around, that's going to be going on. It's just brilliant. It's just brilliant. So it's always good to be back there. And, no, it's going to be good. I think, obviously, it's a fantastic game, fantastic course as well. we're playing for charity game, for Chelsea Foundation, which is always brilliant. I love, I love, I enjoy doing those kind of games.
53:33And I'm sure my teammates and of course Liverpool as well. It's a fantastic course and it's a brilliant game. So I'm sure our fans are going to come out and support that and enjoy the game. And then he'll be in a nice bath on Sunday and then he's coming to you live on Monday. A reminder, Monday, October 13th, it is the Clapham Grand. Just want to reiterate that again.
