In short

Oscar (Brazilian midfielder/attacking playmaker) discusses his return to São Paulo after stints in Europe and China, his Chelsea career, and the “real reason” he moved to China—framed as a mix of playing time, family/life priorities, and a hard-to-refuse offer—plus his views on Antonio Conte’s “12th man” approach and current Brazil/Chelsea prospects.

Guests

Oscar, former Chelsea player (2012–2017), later played in China (Shanghai) for eight years, now plays for São Paulo. Host: Obi-Wan Podcast’s Obi (interviewer).

Key claims

Conte told him he was “the 12th player” and kept him waiting when the team was winning; Oscar says China wasn’t just money—he was not playing in Chelsea, national-team chances were affected, and Shanghai offered quality of life and family time. He denies inflated “150 million pounds” claims, saying he mainly lived on bonuses.

Notable examples

Chelsea goals vs Juventus (Ashley Cole assist; Pirlo turn) and Buffon; Conte’s formation shifts (3-5-2, 3-4-3) after Oscar’s Milan/Werder Bremen performances; near-move to Barcelona during the pandemic; São Paulo’s Libertadores quarter-final push with ~60–70k crowds.

0:00John Obi Mikel:Did you mean to do that?

0:01Oscar Emboaba:Of course I didn't want to do that stuff. He said, no, you are playing good. You are my 12th player.

0:09John Obi Mikel:Because people said, oh, Oscar went for the money. What do you say to those people?

0:18John Obi Mikel:Welcome again. This is the Obi-Wan Podcast. I'm pleased to say today I'm with a special, special guest. I know a lot of people talk about the skills of Eden Hazard, the way he unlocks, you know, defenses and all. But this guy with me today can also do that equally as Eden Hazard. Oscar, welcome to the Obi-Wan podcast.

0:39Oscar Emboaba:Thank you, Obi. Thank you for you to come to Brazil to see me, to have this conversation. So I'm really happy to see you also.

0:47John Obi Mikel:Thank you so much. I mean, Sao Paulo is amazing, isn't it?

0:52Oscar Emboaba:Sao Paulo is an amazing city. You know, I'm from Sao Paulo. I'm born in here. Not Sao Paulo in the big city. I'm a little bit far from here, but you know, my old family is from here. So it's nice. It's nice. It's nice city. It's very, a lot of things to do here every in the morning and night. So like a little bit like London. Really? Wow. So it's a bit like London. It's a busy city. Busy city. In Brazil, it's the most busy city in Brazil.

1:20John Obi Mikel:This is more busier than Rio, right?

1:22Oscar Emboaba:Yes, more busy than here. Yes, because here you have the beach, so it's...

1:26John Obi Mikel:Yeah.

1:27Oscar Emboaba:They are more like relaxed, you know?

1:29John Obi Mikel:Somebody said yesterday, Rio... The people in Rio, they're very lazy because they have the beach. All they do is they go to the beach. But in Sao Paulo... Yeah, Sao Paulo is busy.

1:40Oscar Emboaba:Everyone... There's a lot of work, you know? Yeah. So it's a big city, very big city.

1:44John Obi Mikel:Good. So you're happy to be back home and you are enjoying your football again?

1:49Oscar Emboaba:Yeah, I'm happy to be, you know, after a long time. five years in London after eight years in China. In China, yeah. So, we met in China also. So, after I came back here to, you know, to play a little bit close to my family. Everyone sees, you know, when you are a lot of time away from your parents, so you miss a little bit to play, you know, for everyone go to the stadium to see you play. So, I miss a little bit that. So, now I can.

2:19John Obi Mikel:And how's the team? How's Sao Paulo? Is that? Are you happy? Are you happy with the team? I know you guys are, you know.

2:26Oscar Emboaba:Yeah, yeah, no, I'm happy here. You know, I know the situation of Sao Paulo. Sao Paulo is not the, the, the team now, like Flamengo, Palmeiras, that they have more money. So it's different situation. They have, they can bring the big players for the team. So, you know, have a good players. I'm there, Lucas, you know, have a Caleri, you know, have some, some good players. But in this year we still play for Libertadores. We are there in the court finals. Okay. Oh, really? Yeah. So the team is okay. We have a lot of injuries during the... Because you know here, too many games. It's different than China.

3:06Oscar Emboaba:So when you play many years there, you know, China, you can rest a little bit more. It's more easy here. Every three days have games. So too many games. So I have some injuries. Lucas. So we have some injury players in the team that is important for the team. So, but now we are come back. So the right time have like a quarter final. The Brazilian, the team is, is okay in the middle of the table. So it's okay. Okay. Okay.

3:33John Obi Mikel:And what is, what is the ambition of the team this season?

3:36Oscar Emboaba:The ambition and of course staying in the top six of the Brazilian. And after we have quarter finals. So it's like, you know, when it's playoff, anything can happen. So the team have amazing support, especially in this competition. The Libertadores, the fans of São Paulo love this competition. So every game is like 6-70 ,000 people on the stage. So it's amazing. You have a chance to win. First, we need to try to go to the final after. It's only one game. So because I also ask, obviously, Felipe Luis, you know, I went to see him.

4:17John Obi Mikel:I also asked him, I said, what is his ambition for this season? He also said the Libertadores is the one he wants to win. So if I ask you now, the Libertadores or the league, which one will you take?

4:30Oscar Emboaba:Yeah, Libertadores. Really? Yes. Especially for São Paulo, you know, Flamengo, you know that they have a team to play for every league, every, the Brazilian, the Libertadores, the Cup, so they have a squad, big squad. We have like, limited squad, but it's also good. Yeah. So if it's everyone fit in the right time, we can, we have a chance.

4:53John Obi Mikel:Really? Oh, wow, good. And tell me about, obviously you have a fantastic striker as your ex-striker, as your manager, Crespo. How is he as a manager? Does he, Does he sometimes play with you guys in training? Does he trying to show you that he still has some skills?

5:10Oscar Emboaba:Because he was right there so young. I don't know if you play in Chelsea. No, I think he left before I arrived. Yeah, he's amazing. Played before, you know, we know how he can do in the pitch. You know, of course, when he's playing the coach, it's different things. But he always talked to me like, he had a very nice talk. He listens also to the players and also very, very calm, very respectful. So yeah, I like him.

5:41John Obi Mikel:Really? Oh, amazing. Amazing. Okay, let's talk about obviously Chelsea. You came to the club at 2012, right? 2012. 2012. And then you left in 2017. 2017, yeah. Talk me through how did that transfer come? How did it happen, the move to Chelsea?

6:01Oscar Emboaba:You know, football players, the things change too quickly. You never know what happens, especially when you're young and you are playing good. So I was in international, also playing for national team. And after that time I'm playing very good, a lot of teams want me to go. But Chelsea just won the Champions League.

6:25John Obi Mikel:Yeah, yeah, yeah. We just won the Champions League. Yeah. But the Chelsea, you know, before, after,

6:34Oscar Emboaba:before I arrived at then, Matta already is there. Matta already there. But it's more strong team. For all you, Wesleyan, you know, Maloda, Drogba is also. Strong. After they want to change a little bit, you know, they want to play a little bit more football. And they, they, you know, they asked to me, they give me the project, the team will change. You maybe have more chance to play like this, you know? And yeah, but Chelsea is Chelsea. That time is the best club in the world. So when the best club come to you, you really have to accept. For me, of course, it's a talent because I'm not strong.

7:16Oscar Emboaba:Strong physically. Yes, maybe everyone's talked to me, maybe it'll be a problem, but go to a Spanish league, you know, go to La Ligue to, you know, after you can go to Premier League. And this is, I say, no, I go there. If I will learn that. I try to, to know. And after when I arrive, you know, everyone also help you Lampard, you know, the big players, Terry, the big players that also help me, give me confidence. And after I also have the Brazilians that help also, Ramirez, David. And I don't feel like a pressure. I don't, when I arrived, I arrived already, start to play, play a lot of games in this.

7:56Oscar Emboaba:And after, you know, after, make the things easy for me. But it's a big move and it's amazing when you arrive in the best club in the world and start to play Champions League, Premier League. So it was a dream for me. Yeah.

8:12John Obi Mikel:Did you have any other Premier League club at that time that wanted to sign you? Or was it just Chelsea?

8:16Oscar Emboaba:No, I have Tottenham. Tottenham was there. Because Villasboas was there.

8:22John Obi Mikel:Oh really?

8:23Oscar Emboaba:And Villasboas is the first one to call me.

8:28Oscar Emboaba:After I played with Villasboas in China, they always say, I talk to you, why you don't care for Tottenham? But Chelsea, you know, Tottenham and Chelsea, I cannot compare Chelsea with Tottenham and Chelsea. Chelsea is better. Chelsea is better, so I choose Chelsea. And it was the right choose because after I played a good foot, we won some titles there this year. So it was amazing.

8:57John Obi Mikel:Talk to me through, I mean, you scored some brilliant goals at the club, but of course, one that really stands out, the goal against Juventus. Oh my God. That was your first start, right? I think it was. Your first start, the first time you started.

9:11Oscar Emboaba:Yes. Well, the first time I started, I started a game. Yeah. I start, uh, in Premier League start, but, uh, I, I, I always come substitute. I play 30 minutes just to begin after it was my first, first start game.

9:27John Obi Mikel:Wow. And that goal taught me true about it. I mean, sometimes I still see it on TV. Like the ball came from - You were playing, you were playing. I was in Nagelian.

9:36Oscar Emboaba:You passed to Ashley Cole, right? Ashley Cole, yeah. Because a lot of people send this goal for me and I always see you Ashley there. Yeah. You know, before I scored, I already scored one goal. Yeah. That I shoot and the ball go and score first goal in Champions League. Okay. And five, ten minutes after, I have received the ball from Ashley. And I just turned on Pirlo. Yeah, it was Pirlo, right?

10:02John Obi Mikel:It was Pirlo there.

10:03Oscar Emboaba:It was like, you know, I like that time.

10:07John Obi Mikel:Did you mean that touch? I know you have a good touch. Did you mean to do that touch?

10:10Oscar Emboaba:Of course I didn't want to do that touch. Because, you know, of course, it was so perfect. It was so, you know, the time, the touch was so perfect. Sometimes people think, no, it's not possible. You want to do that. I said, no, I try to do that. But it was so perfect. And after, of course, the shoot was like amazing. Two goals in the Champions League. First game, one beautiful goal against Buffon. Pirlo, also Juventus was a nice team. Chelsea just won the Champions League.

10:46John Obi Mikel:Yeah.

10:46Oscar Emboaba:So it's like, it's a dream, you know? So for me, it's one of the best, best goals in my career. So, and also ones are the most beautiful goal that I scored in Champions League.

10:58John Obi Mikel:Oh, it was amazing goal. Amazing goal. I mean, I can't stop watching it. I can't stop watching it. But your time at Chelsea, you enjoyed this. Obviously, I know when you were there, obviously, because among all the Brazilian, your Brazilian friends, who really helped you settle the most at the club when you came in?

11:17Oscar Emboaba:You know, I think, of course, you know, you play many years with me. You know, I'm shy. I don't like to talk too much, but I'm a funny guy also. I like to see, to love the things, you know? But in my way, so that time, of course, Davi was, Davi is the captain of the Brazilians. You know how Davi... Yeah, he was, yeah. Davi was the captain of Brazil, but when you arrive in the - Just like Drogba is the captain for the Americans. Exactly. Drogba is the territory for the English. For the English, yeah. You know, but also have the Spanish guys. Mata also was very nice with me at that time. Torres.

11:57Oscar Emboaba:Eden. You know Eden also is very funny. We arrived at the same time. So, of course, Davi is the guy that helped a lot, helped a lot, a lot of times with me and my family. out of food. Always with David's family. We were always together. Hamir is also, we are close that time. We are close that time. We are always barbecue together. Of course, many games. And, but always together. So after training,

12:25John Obi Mikel:sometimes you guys go home and then the family. Yeah, and have like,

12:29Oscar Emboaba:because that time it's just me and my wife. So I don't bring my mom. No, just me and my wife in my apartment. So sometimes after the training, let's go and Davi House have some lunch, some dinner. So I only stay together. But Davi, I think, was the key to help me in that time.

12:46John Obi Mikel:Betwinner, home of true winners. So I remember that time. I think Conte, when Conte came, right? He thought, I think maybe what he thought was like, I have too many of similar kind of players, right? You were there. Edin was there. Both of you were sort of similar. Yes. Did you think that's why he thought, okay, I needed one, not two, you know.

13:11Oscar Emboaba:I don't know if you remember when Conte arrived, he changed the formation. He liked three, five, two, and he don't want to change. And in the preseason, he said to me, you want to stay? You need to work in midfield or winger because he don't play with number 10.

13:31John Obi Mikel:He doesn't play with number 10 yet in that time.

13:34Oscar Emboaba:But I say, I try in both positions, but I prefer more playing in the middle. But in the Precisa start, I don't start playing. And after we lose some games and after I play against Milan, the Precisa score two goals. One goal against Milan. After I play against Werder Bremen, I score again. After he changed a little bit. put me, Matic and Fabregas in three. Play like three, four, three. Yeah. Yeah. And we start the league. We win, I don't know, 11 straight games. I don't know, but we win a lot of games. And one cup, he changed me, take me out for the cup. And also take Ivanovic. Take me, you rest, you play a lot of games.

14:28Oscar Emboaba:But I started playing with him. He changed a little bit the team because of me.

14:33John Obi Mikel:Really?

14:34Oscar Emboaba:But after change, play against, I remember, play against Leicester there with another team. And this team also win the game, but in his way, you know, the three, four, three, five, two. Yeah. And after that, the team don't stop to win. So I said, Conte, why you don't play anymore? because you say you put me to rest and now I want to play.

15:02John Obi Mikel:So you, so you went to him and you spoke to him. Yeah, of course. You asked him why. Yes.

15:05Oscar Emboaba:I asked why you don't, I want to know, you know, why I'm playing bad, you know, because my way and my mind, I'm playing good. So he said, no, you are playing good. You are my 12th player.

15:23Oscar Emboaba:You are my 12th player. But you are, you are the first team. My 12th. Yeah. You are my first. You are, you are, you are, you are, you are, you play for the first team. But you know, Oscar, I need to wait. The team lose the game, you know. When lose the game, I don't know. When we are winning, I don't like to change. To change. We win. That, I think we lose against Arsenal, if you change, we win like 12 straight games.

15:56John Obi Mikel:Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. After you lost to us now. Yeah. After I lost to us, we like, and I don't have space.

16:05Oscar Emboaba:And he still didn't put you because the team is winning. And after I say, I tell to him, Conte, I like you, but if I'm not, you're not, I'm not playing. I like to play. If you're not use me, I can go to another team. No problem. Just tell me, no, you are my first team, but I need to wait. And the team don't lose, but it's good. Okay. Yeah. And after that, I started to, some clubs come to Juventus, come to me, Atlético de Madrid. Ah, Oscar, if you're not playing, you can come for us. Okay. They started to talk to me, to my agent. And I started to talk to the club. The club, no, I don't, you know, at that time, they, of course, the club also liked the way I'm playing.

16:48Oscar Emboaba:They liked me there. I'm not, I'm the guy that not make problem for the club at the time. So they, no, we want to stay here. Just be calm. You play better. I say, and after start to come China, that time start China start to.

17:05John Obi Mikel:Yeah.

17:06Oscar Emboaba:To bring some good players for.

17:09John Obi Mikel:Yeah.

17:09Oscar Emboaba:Yeah. Make some offer for good players from Premier League players. You know, the China come to me and the first time I say no. Okay. Yes. They come to, you know, Jiangsu. You know, Jiangsu. Jiangsu. Yeah. Yeah. Jaxu come to me and say, Oscar, come here. We pay for you, whatever you want. I say, no, I don't want to go to China now. I still want to play here in Europe. I play for national team. So after that, I say, okay, stop. Then after, two weeks after, Shanghai, come to my agent. Okay. Maybe Oscar, he don't want to come to China. I don't know.

17:50John Obi Mikel:Let's ask him. I want to ask you about China. I'll ask you about that.

17:54Oscar Emboaba:I asked him, I said, okay. And after he asked to me and after that, I, of course they, you know how it's China. I say, no, I don't want, if you give me this, I go. But you don't, you didn't believe. And after he come and they bring to me, they, and at that time I'm not playing. So me and my wife say, okay, they, they give me a very big offer and be let's, let's go. And after one, two years, two years, I go, we come back. I stay eight years. Ten years. Because also I have luck in this situation because I go to Shanghai also. Yeah. Good city. You know that Shanghai is amazing city. So this helped a lot to stay these many years there.

18:42Oscar Emboaba:So it's not only about after, of course, when you have received the offer of course about money. They, it's a very good offer for you. But after it's not only that, you know, Shanghai is a good seat for me, for my kids, for my family. They, they still, they love Shanghai and after same.

18:59John Obi Mikel:Yeah. Yeah.

19:00Oscar Emboaba:That's why I leave, but in the beginning, I don't want to really leave, you know, because I love Chelsea. Everyone loves me. They're the fans, you know? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's what I was going to ask. Very big.

19:12John Obi Mikel:The fans love you a lot. I know people talk about adding hazard a lot, but the fans absolutely love you and they adored you. And I think that's why when you left, some of the fans were not upset. But they don't, they don't, they don't understand why you left. Why exactly. Also you left at, you left at, they think you left at a young age, at the age of 25, 24, 25. So when that offer came, you decided, that's it. I'm going to go. They made you an offer you cannot, you know, they say, they make you an offer you cannot reject.

19:50Oscar Emboaba:Exactly. This is why I live. They give me a very big offer that I cannot say now. But of course, I think about my age. I go there, I stop to go to national team. But this is one problem when you start also too young. When you already play World Cup. But when I go there, you think, I go there. and the, you know, I'm, I'm not like the guy that want to be famous. Yes. Yes. I know you're very, you're very quiet. And this may be not to help me to stay there, but there you can have like your, you can go out. Nobody know, you know, you can enjoy more like the real life. Yeah. So when I arrived there, I start to see these things.

20:37Oscar Emboaba:I say, Oh, I like here. It's quiet. It's quiet. Nobody say you can enjoy a lot with your family. You have a lot of time. You have more time with your family. Because before, every time, a national team, play a lot of games. You don't stay home. You know how it's football. It's not easy. Yeah.

20:55John Obi Mikel:But do you feel, do you regret that? Giving up that, not winning the Champions League, not playing for the national team anymore. Do you, when that was happening, did you, were you regretting your move to China? Because you know, you're going to give that up. Yeah, I think, yeah, of course I, I was, uh, think about this thing.

21:20Oscar Emboaba:I think the first year, a lot of times I said, oh, I want to play in Champions League. I want to play World Cup again. I want to play, I want to come back to national team. And I think the first year I feel a lot this, this move. I say, they regret. Yeah. But after you, okay, but I'm happy here after, of course, when you talk about China, we, the fans there, the people there in the club there also, um, always making me happy. My family, they treat me like, uh, really good. So this also helped to stay there. But I feel this in Chelsea, I feel that I can, if I stay there, I can, uh, I can give more, more things that I gave for Chelsea.

22:07Oscar Emboaba:I think I can, maybe if I stay there, I can win one Champions League. I can win more Premier League. I can, I maybe not a legend, but more than that I did for the club. I think if I stay there, of course I can,

22:22John Obi Mikel:I can need more help for the club. Yeah. I know sometimes you must have got this when you made that move. For people that are listening, not watching, because people criticize you saying, oh, he just went for the money. What do you have to say to those people that are saying that? Because now you've just explained that you went there and you enjoyed it and all that. Because people said, oh, Oscar went for the money. What do you say to those people?

22:54Oscar Emboaba:No, I think that time is difficult. Football players, everyone have your moment. In that moment in Chelsea, I was not playing and I tried to move to one Europe team. But I know to move to one Europe team is not so easy like this. And China, they have money. It's like I saw the Arabian now. If they really want one guy now, they will get this guy. So they come in my situation. They come with me with everything. So it's difficult to say no. I think not only me, I think for all the players that, of course, have some different players that, but when you come with a lot of money, with a big offer for you, you are not playing in the club.

23:41Oscar Emboaba:So this is why I leave the club. If I'm playing, maybe, maybe it'll be more difficult to say no.

23:48John Obi Mikel:Yeah. Yeah. Okay.

23:50Oscar Emboaba:No, to say yes. Yes. To say yes. If I'm playing, if I'm in good moment in national team, it will be difficult to say yes. But in national team also, change the coach. Two times I go, two times the coach don't call me because I'm not playing in Chelsea. So, you know, the competition in Brazilian national team also is hard. You need to play. You need to play good football to go to national team. So that time was everything, uh, not in the good way to, to say no for China. Yeah. So it was the way to say yes for China. So, and often we, of course also it was a big offer and I, I, I understand. Uh, the people that criticize me, the people that don't like, I leave Chelsea because if you like football, you want.

24:48Oscar Emboaba:Yeah. You want. Because they love you. Exactly. Exactly. So I understand, of course I understand this, but they need to understand also

24:58John Obi Mikel:your decision.

24:59Oscar Emboaba:My decision. Of course, I want to play, give more for the club. I want to give more for, if you give more, it's like you can play better for the club. You can make more history. So, but it's the season is the season. And after I'm, of course I'm happy with my decision. I think personally, I was really happy in China, really, really happy in China. In these five years in Chelsea, I also was really, really happy there. This was the only time that I'm not playing so a little bit, not so happy that I leave. I'm not like a fight with the club, give some problems. No, you're not that type of player.

25:45Oscar Emboaba:All the time I was happy. five years in Chelsea, happy. In China, happy. In Sao Paulo, happy. Always happy. Not like it was easy decision.

Did they just come and say, Oscar, here's a blank check. Just put how much you want and we'll pay. Is that what happened? Just write how much you want and we'll give you.

26:28Oscar Emboaba:You know how you do the negotiation. They talk with your agent and your agent starts to talk. The agent is also is, they are clever with players. They know how to convince the players. And my agent was really, he know me since then I'm like, 14 years old. So we have like a very good relationship. So he always making me free to my decision. He not forced me. He know that I want that time I want to leave because I'm not playing, but not I want to leave to China. I want to leave because I want to play. And we try to go to another team. So, but then negotiation is difficult because Chelsea asking that time a lot of money.

27:10Oscar Emboaba:If I'm, Yeah, if you want to Oscar give to me a lot of money. So, and the team is like, it's like, it's not easy to give a lot of money that from play that not play too much. Not playing, yeah, yeah, yeah. And after China is coming and they say, like I said, Shanghai said to me, you want what Oscar wants? I say, you know, if they give me, I tell to my, if they give me this, okay. Okay. I go, but you put the number. the numbers that you you don't imagine they would give but like I said that time China have a lot of money for everyone so like Saudi Arabia now they have money for a lot of players you know how Cristiano you know but football is like this and I accept and I was happy of course with the offer and after I don't know how is Shanghai is good the city and then of course when I received the offer I stayed two three days I'm not sleeping let's say oh my god I need to accept this and the other day no no we don't go and after me my wife started to talk we have two kids I think we need to go we don't know you know you don't know tomorrow you can injure your knee you know because football can happen you never know you never know you never know so So this, if we go there, this we have like is a hundred percent.

28:45Oscar Emboaba:It's not like if an injury -

28:47John Obi Mikel:You will sort out your life, your kids' life, everybody. Exactly, my life. Exactly, everybody.

28:52Oscar Emboaba:So we are from Brazil. We come from simple people. You know how is the football. And when you have this big opportunity in your life to change everything, not only about you, about everything behind of you, you have family we have like a big family friends so we can give another step of life for them so it's different so this is I think of course my decision sometimes a lot of people people that love football with guys of course if I see one guy do this today I say no stay playing football now stay here in Premier League but if you think about the life you know everyone you say yes it's difficult to say no so yes

29:41John Obi Mikel:there's a quote I was reading they said Oscar spent eight years in in China in Shanghai and he made 150 million pounds this is lying

29:56Oscar Emboaba:you know you know the people say about money they lie this thing it's not true this thing you know

30:04John Obi Mikel:you will never tell if it's true no no

30:07Oscar Emboaba:I didn't see my money. I live always with the bonus there when you win the games. This is why when I play against you there, I give everything. Obi, I need to win the game. You didn't touch your salary. You only touched the bonuses. You know how it's there. China still have this. Also, this is normal in China. They give bonus for me in the game. I think in Asia, this is more normal. More normal, yeah. So in that situation, have money in China, everyone give, have a lot, big, big bonus. And, yeah.

30:48John Obi Mikel:So you were not seeing the salary, you were just seeing the bonuses.

30:52Oscar Emboaba:Yeah, no, just bonus, just bonus. And we, I live like a, we get a great life. We have the bonus to not, not go to, to, to shop and stay home. But yeah, it was nice. It was nice period. You know, I love that. I love China. And not only about money. Like I said, it's like also Shanghai for me is one of the best city. Yeah. Yeah. The quality of life in Shanghai for me is one of the best in the world.

31:25John Obi Mikel:Have you, have you been back since you left? No, not yet.

31:28Oscar Emboaba:because you know brazil have a lot of games but of course i want to come back there i want to see i made a lot of friends there many years there i have a lot of respect of of the people there about what they did for me what also what i did for the on not only for the club you know for the city uh i always you know when you don't give problem you always say good things about china you know how things about China. If they see that you are bringing like nice things to the country, for the city, they -

32:07John Obi Mikel:They will love you. They will love you. They will love you.

32:10Oscar Emboaba:So this is what happened to me in China. So, you know, like they have the derby there, the fans of Xinhua and the fans of my team, Shanghai Port, they love, both love me there. Not because, ah, you always bring the city. in the first, the first, the first plan, we always talk about good things about the city. You know, I always enjoy here, the city because a lot of players go there only about money. You know, how is it? They say, China is not good. China eats dog. You know, this thing that is not true. You know, it's not true. The city is amazing city.

32:46John Obi Mikel:So yeah. While you were there after two, three, four years, was there any time, any point in time that you thought, I feel like maybe I want to come back to Europe. Was there any club that contacted you? Was there any offer to come back to Europe?

33:02Oscar Emboaba:Yeah, I have one very close offer of Barcelona. Yeah, when I was in the pandemic start, you know, the Barcelona have problems to bring players there. Yeah, yeah. So they come to me. Ah, Oscar, you want to? because the director of Barcelona was coached in the Holland guy. They are coaching one team of China. After he go to be director of Barcelona. And he know I'm there, but I still play. I'm playing good there. I know China, of course, is not the first level, but I'm playing good. I'm fit there. And he come to me in the pan and me say, Oscar, you want to stay here like six months because we cannot bring players here.

33:54Oscar Emboaba:Of course, they don't give you salary. Like not free, but they give you a small salary. But come here, stay here, help us. And after you decide if you want to stay here or you want to come back to China. I don't talk with the club. I waiting for them because they need to leave one guy from Barcelona.

34:15John Obi Mikel:Before you can join. Before I can join.

34:16Oscar Emboaba:So it was very close, but the guy, I think it's, it's one, one defender. Umu Chi, I think it was. Okay. He don't, he didn't leave because he didn't fight in one club. And the, the last time I didn't, I didn't go. But it was very close to, to, to go there.

34:36John Obi Mikel:So if he left, you would have joined Barcelona. Exactly. Wow. What season is this? Like, I don't remember. You can't remember.

34:42Oscar Emboaba:Was Xavi was the coach. Oh, yeah. but it was very close but they come to me like I don't

34:56Oscar Emboaba:talk with Shanghai because of course after Shanghai I know that but I wait for 100 % 100 % after but of course after if I talk to the club the situation maybe also say if 6 months after I come back maybe you'll be good for the club Because I play for Barcelona, it's good. Everyone you see after I come back, it's good for the club, make the club bigger. So this will be not like a problem, but in the end, it was, the things not go right, but it was close.

35:32John Obi Mikel:Oh, wow. Wow. That's amazing to know. Betwinner, your bets, your wins. And tell me about your international career. Do you still think there's a way back into the national team?

35:45Oscar Emboaba:You know, here, when I started the season, I started playing good football here. The coach before Ancelotti was Dorival, he put me in the pre-list two times. Also, Ancelotti put me in the pre-list, but after I had some injuries, and then I don't have a chance to go. But here in São Paulo, if we play good, São Paulo is one of the best teams here. They will see very big team. If you play good here, you have chance to come back.

36:18John Obi Mikel:So you spoke to Angelo, to you and him, you've had a conversation.

36:20Oscar Emboaba:Not, not yet, not yet, but I know that, um, if you are good, good here in good shape, playing good, you have chance to go, especially my position. No, midfield. Yeah. Brazil here is a little bit. Yeah. It's not one, two or three guys that, oh, this guy, they are playing in Europe. It's not chance. You have space there. have some space there. So I have chance.

36:45John Obi Mikel:And do you think, and Carlo is the right man to lead this Brazilian team back to winning ways? Because it's been a long time. Long time. Brazil won a major trophy. Do you think Carlo is the man to lead you back? Yes, I hope so.

36:58Oscar Emboaba:I hope he can help because, you know, he have like, he won all the trophies that he can in Europe. So he have chance now to play one of the best national teams in the world. So we hope that he can bring this, his experience, he's, you know, he's lucky to win Trollford because you know how is World Cup? World Cup, like you are playing is like seven, eight games a league and you don't know if

37:29John Obi Mikel:You don't know, yeah.

37:29Oscar Emboaba:What can happen, you know? So, but of course the big teams is the big, big national teams. But if you are good, you are confident, you can win, you can win the World Cup. Brazil usually have amazing, amazing squad have chance, especially now if Ancelotti there.

37:47John Obi Mikel:And with so many talented players, I had Zico, the legend on the podcast, and he said to me that he thinks the team can still be built around Neymar. Do you think that's true? Like Neymar is still the main man to build the team around Neymar? Or do you think Vinicius Jr. is the guy to become the main man?

38:12Oscar Emboaba:I don't know. I don't like to. It's like, you know, Argentina, okay, building about Messi. But Brazil is a little bit different. Argentina, Messi, but the other team after they won the World Cup, a lot of players go to the big teams, you know. But Brazil is a little bit different. I don't like this, like, play for Neymar or play for Vinicius. I think of course Neymar can play because Neymar is 32, 33. So it's not very old. If Neymar is fit, of course he can play. Neymar can play. Fit. Fit. That's the thing. Exactly. Fit. Because, you know, but we have a lot of good players. Estavio now. Estavio.

38:52Oscar Emboaba:Just go to Chelsea. He's a good player. Vinicius, Rodrigo, Cunha, John Pedro. John Pedro. Yeah. Brazil always have a good players, attacking players. But Neymar, you know, the quality of Neymar is amazing. It's amazing. It's amazing. I was like, I don't know how to explain these things, you know. If he's fit, he's like, he's one of the best in the world. Of course, ah, he's more old. Oh, you know, if you care of your body, Cristiano, Cristiano today is like, I don't know, more than 40. He still plays amazing, plays good. Messi also plays good. Neymar also, if he's fit, he can play like a… still can play amazing football.

39:40John Obi Mikel:And Estavio, tell me, what do you think of him? Do you think he will one day… Do you think he's a potential Ballon d 'Or winner? Do you think he's that good?

39:50Oscar Emboaba:I think if he has the confidence, you know, he's good. He has the dribble. He likes to score goals. He has the goal. So, and he has a lot of talent. A lot of talent. And I think he, you know, he needs to give time. Give time to adapt to Europe. It's not easy to arrive there and play. Give a little time. I think he goes to one of the best teams in Europe. So let's see what happens, especially these two, three years, next two, three years. So, but he has the talent he has.

40:26John Obi Mikel:And Gio Pedro, do you think he is the man to lead, to be our number nine in Chelsea? Do you think he is the guy? I think he is.

40:35Oscar Emboaba:I think he is. Because, you know, he's already there in Premier League. Premier League, yeah. He knows how to score goals. And you know how it's difficult to score goals in the small team in Premier League.

40:45John Obi Mikel:Yeah.

40:46Oscar Emboaba:And he scored a lot of goals. A lot of goals for Brighton, yeah. For Brighton. And now in Chelsea, every game he's there. He scored goals. He just arrived in the World Club and scored a lot of goals in the Premier League. He already scored goals. So, you know, he's strong. He can score in the hand, in the feet. So I like him. I like the way he plays. And I think he's like the player that is the face of Chelsea. I like the way he plays.

41:17John Obi Mikel:He's not a typical number nine.

41:19Oscar Emboaba:No. Not a typical number nine. But he fights. Yeah. He fights. He's like, he have a good personality. I like the way he plays. I really like. Let's see. I hope he can keep going this way, you know?

41:33John Obi Mikel:Yeah, yeah. And the Premier League. Are you still watching the Premier League? Do you keep an eye on the… Are you still a Chelsea fan? No, of course.

41:40Oscar Emboaba:You know, when he lives there, you know, I still… A long time I don't go to Londo to see Chelsea games. I need to come back. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But this one is one thing that I really want. I really want to come back there to see the fans. Yeah, you definitely. To see the Premier League. I'm not, I still can play a little bit more, but after I can play some, the games that Chelsea Legends, we play together. This is the game I'm playing now. This is the big, make me very happy to play with you. With Eden, very big Eden. After Eden, we go to Nando's, no problem. Nando's. But you know, JT, you know, the time was really, this is why I want to come back.

42:28Oscar Emboaba:The time that I stay in Chelsea, it's not like 10 years like you, like, you know, but it was nice. You know, the team win the two Premier Leagues, they win the Europa League, play nice football, He changed a little bit the way he liked to play football. So this, this make me like really proud of, of the, the time of in Chelsea. So I want to come back there to, to, to see how is the game is there. But of course I will support Chelsea. Always. I always, my, I have the, the kids. So my, my little, my little boys, he love Chelsea. Always have Chelsea shirts. So if someone is in London, I say, ah, bring one Chelsea shirt for him.

43:12Oscar Emboaba:So we are all this support Chelsea.

43:16John Obi Mikel:And Moresca, what do you make of him? Do you think he's the right manager for Chelsea? Do you think he's the guy to, I know we've won the club, we've won the conference league, but you know how the Premier League and the Champions League is the one that everybody wants. You think Moresca is that man to lead us back to winning those big trophies? I think this year, the Chelsea, I think, make a little bit change from last year.

43:39Oscar Emboaba:I think this year, you know, Chelsea arrived a lot of players and a lot of young players. And they are trying to find the team. But now, after they won the World Club, they are finding a nice team. One competitive team. So they can try. They need to, of course, Premier League is difficult. Difficult, yeah. It's very difficult. You know how is the team now, City, Liverpool now is amazing. But they are there. They can fight. I think this year Chelsea is a little bit more strong. More strong. I think it's more strong than La Cien. Than La Cien, yeah. I think it's more strong. Yeah, yeah. You know, I think the problem of La Cien is not about Chelsea against Liverpool, Arsenal, City.

44:28Oscar Emboaba:It's when they play home against… The smaller teams. Yeah. I know that Premier League don't have a small team. I know that. But we know that we are there. We have a small team. Yeah, of course. The biggest one is the Derby one, you know, but the big six there, this is the big games. But when you play against, like they play against Fulham, they won the Fulham at home. They need to win these games. They need to win these games. They need to win too. We have more points in the end, you know.

44:58John Obi Mikel:And prediction, who do you think is going to win the Premier League this season? Yeah. You know, Arsenal, Liverpool, City, Chelsea. We support Chelsea, you know. We need to support Chelsea.

45:07Oscar Emboaba:We need to give this confidence for Chelsea. But you know, like, Arsenal and Liverpool, they are, I think they, like, two years ago, City is the best team. But I think Liverpool and Arsenal, they are better than City. So, I think Chelsea can fight with these teams.

45:28John Obi Mikel:And finally, my last question. Oscar, what is it you now, what do you want to achieve? What is left for you to achieve now in your career? What is it you want to achieve before you can retire?

45:42Oscar Emboaba:No, I think I make all the dreams that I have in the football. Of course, I have more to come. I come back to play in the team that I support when I was young. So I want to play for this team. I want to play, win some title with Sao Paulo. So, and after, after I don't want to play 42, 43, 43, you know, I want to play that. You already have all the money in the bank. I want to play that way. I don't want to suffer. So, you know, it's too much travel. We have family, kids. I also want to enjoy this. but you know football you need to of course you need to enjoy to the end because after you miss the things so I want to enjoy this this end you turn 34 now so you still look

46:36John Obi Mikel:like you're 25

46:37Oscar Emboaba:yeah exactly so we're still the same you know I think if you come back to Chelsea both of us they don't say that we have this age but yeah I'm getting a little bit old now for football not for life, you know, but for football, yeah. So, let's see, let's just enjoy the end of my career. So just enjoy with my family here in Sao Paulo. And after, I don't know when I will finish, but after when I feel that I cannot play anymore, I will say, ah, thank you. Thank you very much for all the teams that support me during my career and keep going the life, you know.

47:22John Obi Mikel:And your last message to the Chelsea fans, you will see them soon, right?

47:26Oscar Emboaba:Yeah, I try to have some in my holidays, some day to go to Stanford Beach to enjoy some game together. And I really want to see all the fans in the Chelsea game again. Amazing. Thank you so much, Oskinho. Thank you for coming to Brazil. We are always welcome.

47:52Thank you.
