0:14Pat McAfee:Football is absolutely magical and today is the day that we can say that the NFL is officially kicking off its 2025 season. Here we go. Now today, just like many years in the past, this season will start right here at a place that has been honoring legends since 1963. This is the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It is raining and we clearly don't have speakers for the crowd. But what we do have is an excitement level beyond belief because football is back in our life for real tonight. Harbaugh will be on one sideline. MCDC will be on the other. And I believe we have a little bit of breaking news for the Detroit Lions fans.
1:02Pat McAfee:Tonight, starting for the Detroit Lions, according to Source CIS, Kyle Allen will be getting the start. But we will be seeing Hendon Hooker from what we have been told. Now, for the Chargers, we do not have any inside Source CIS. But as that information rolls out today, we will certainly keep everybody updated. Tonight's game will not be littered with superstars. It will not be the guys that we know on every single part of the team, but it will be two NFL helmets battling in front of a building that celebrates greatness from beginning to end in a town that loves ball. Loves ball. We've only been able to be here for like the last 18, 20 hours or so, but as you drive through this town, it literally emanates ball.
1:48Pat McAfee:Everybody here loves ball. Everybody's committed to the Hall of Fame, And there's actually telephone pole wires that hold up that are two uprights field goals. This entire city is committed to ball, and we're lucky to be here. It's not just me, obviously. It's obviously the boys. The toxic table is here at Boston Corner. Not bad. They get it. And at Ty Schmidt. Now, Ty Green Bay Packers, Sterling Sharp going into the Hall of Fame. Congrats to him. We'll have a chance to chat with most of this year's class. But the Hall of Fame, beautiful thing. Lucky to be here. Cannot wait to walk through and see all the history of the greatest league on earth.
2:29Yeah, without a doubt. You know, we've talked about this a little bit. I don't know if any of us, I mean, I don't know if you guys have. I know us three, we've never actually walked through and had a tour of the Hall of Fame. It kind of seems like something, if you're a fan of the NFL, you absolutely need to do, you know, at one point in your life. So really looking forward to that. Obviously, you know, all the fans out here braving the weather. But let's be honest. I mean, kicking off the NFL season, it's football weather.
2:54Pat McAfee:Yeah, you're damn right. You got football weather today. And, you know, it was like 145 degrees yesterday up there in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, for the Pittsburgh Steelers training kit. Okay. Now, fun fact that we learned from Jim, president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, whenever they were creating the Pro Football, there's some answers here for sure. Yeah. Yes, definitely some interest here. Whenever they were going to create this Hall of Fame back in the 60s, 1963, it was either going to be placed in Latro, Pennsylvania, or it was going to be in Canton, Ohio. So we just found that out this morning.
3:32Pat McAfee:Very cool football trip that we have been on over the last two days. And obviously, you can't come to this state without mentioning a man who's a former president of this state, a college football national champion with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ladies and gentlemen, the all time lady tackle for the Packers, AJ Hawk is there.
3:59Pat McAfee:AJ with his uncomfortable and awkward point at a random kid in the crowd. Right here, this nice lady. Not just a nice lady here. There's been people that have been here since like 6 a.m., 7 a.m. It's raining. We appreciate the hell out of you for doing this. We would not have done that for this particular show, but we appreciate that you are doing as such. The state of Ohio has been great to us. I feel a lot of kinship with the state of Ohio as people that grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Obviously, I go to school at West Virginia. These hills, these people, very similar. Everybody loves ball, AJ.
4:32Pat McAfee:I think that is one of the fabrics of the state of Ohio and why the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Ohio seemingly makes the most sense. Yeah, it makes sense, I think. I mean, look at, like Ty said, this is football weather for people that actually truly care about football, not casuals yeah they're here around the set but i think they would be here either way going around checking out the festivities because this truly is the start of
4:56can't really catch it through my earpiece on it but yeah we got a couple good ones yeah they're people from all over though i would imagine there's people like there's people from every nfl city here don't you think i would imagine this weekend's so big for that
5:07Pat McAfee:last night outside of the hotel there was representatives getting autographs from every team people travel in here people do an annual trip out to the hall of fame i'm learning as we go this is my first time here other than whenever we played a game here and it got canceled sure don't love that that happened wow but it was awesome to only play four preseason games not for me but for the rest of the team i don't have to do in preseason i was just a punter with that being said one of my teammates nine-year nfl vet one of the smartest guys in history of football. Ladies and gentlemen, Darius Shade Baller is here.
5:37Pat McAfee:D-Buts. D-Buts. NFL football is kicking off a game tonight. NFL helmets will be on a field tonight. NFL uniforms will be on a field tonight. Sunday Night Football with NBC will be calling a game tonight. It feels like we made it, D-Buts. What a perfect time. Yeah, your mic isn't working. Uh-oh. Come on. You know what it is. Hey, I don't want to say it. No, I'm not going to put that out there. It's Ohio. You're back. You're back. Kind of, yeah. Okay, kind of. Oh! Oh! It is Ohio. East of Pittsburgh. East of Pittsburgh. I had a great time in Ohio. I had a great time last night, you know, at the hotel, having some food and just seeing all the legends out there.
6:15And it's about the guys that are playing tonight, but it's more so about the four legends going in. What's that? What? Nothing. What the hell? Sorry. But, yeah, it's about the legends going down in immortality in football. Man, they put so much on the line. I saw so many people, players, coaches, contributors walking around the hotel that I grew up looking up to, man. So I'm excited about tonight. And then, obviously, our future going forward. We'll have Sunday after Sunday after Sunday after Sunday with football on the screen.
6:41Pat McAfee:Okay, so there you just mentioned Sunday after Sunday after Sunday after Sunday. That's all the way until February, right? February, yeah. We did it! Long time. We did it! Got a long run. Zito found this pen in David Baker's office. I guess he left it around. This was the former head of the Hall of Fame. He has since moved on. These big-ass pencils might be the best thing you could buy at this Pro Football Hall of Fame. But with that being said, the Mark store that is outside, the merch that is here, the museum, the hospitality of everybody that has worked at this Pro Football Hall of Fame. It's a lot of, I think it's like 90 % people that just live in this area.
7:21Pat McAfee:A lot of pride. Very thankful for everybody that comes in. if you've not made a trip here, I think this is something you have to do. Legitimately, I think it's something you have. If you're a football fan, I think this building right here, we saw a cursive written letter from 1925 that had implications on how football would be run forever. We saw the actual letter that was sent from Lamar Hunt to Pete Rozelle back whenever the AFL was going to merge with the NFL or whatever it was. And I'll tell you what, I don't know who he is, but there's a guy named Larry something. We don't know his name for a reason.
7:57He was from the AFL.
7:59Pat McAfee:He's the first thing that Lamar Hunt talks about in this letter to the Pete Roselle. Need to get rid of this guy. I don't like what he's about. Then down there, point number five in this letter he says we need something like the Grey Cup. We need something like Wimbledon. We need something that's big. I have jokingly called it the Super Bowl but we can obviously workshop that in this letter from 19 whenever, 60 something. And then obviously that would go on to become the biggest game in the history of any league. And it's like there's artifacts like that from our league and from our game littered all over this building that I didn't know existed until they showed it to us earlier today.
8:33Pat McAfee:I saw my draft card, the one that was actually turned in whenever I got drafted. It's like this is football paradise, and it's the right spot to kick off a league every single year. Now, we are joined by a man named, well, he's one half of the hammer. Cowboys AP Tone. Tone, are we gambling on the Hall of Fame game tonight? And what should we be looking at here? We are 100 % gambling on the Hall of Fame game tonight. As you said, you know, two teams with NFL helmets are playing tonight. So we're definitely gambling on it. The Lions are favored by a point and a half. So basically call pick them.
9:06So you just pick the winner tonight. You mentioned that big news tonight that Kyle Allen will probably be the starter for the Lions. And then heading and hooker, we'll see some time. Kyle Allen was really good in the preseason last year for the Steelers. He was 17 and 23 of 23, and they get one game that he got. And then the Chargers side, they have announced Trey Lance will be the starter for at least a half. And then you get DJ U.
9:27Pat McAfee:Uri Angola late? Yeah, up and down college career. So you'll see DJ U late. I normally side with the quarterbacks who I would give the advantage to Kyle Allen and Hennon Hooker in this spot. Trey Lance threw five interceptions in one preseason game last year. I don't know, though. The Harbaugh record is a lot better in preseason games than MCDC. All right. So it sounds like you. Both sides, yeah. Yeah, it sounds like we didn't really get an answer. I'm waiting at Chargers. I mean, you're betting on this game. You might have to call the number. No. You're talking about NFL football. It's been so long, D-Bot.
9:55Don't say that.
9:56Pat McAfee:This is March Madness of NFL football. Chargers are playing their rookies, too. Are Mario Hampton's going to play? Trey Harris is going to play? It's going to be exciting to see those guys. Yeah, excited to watch the game. Gambling on it, though, is pretty wild. We have no idea what's going to happen out there and who's going to run what plays. Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen, senior insider at ESPN. Ladies and gentlemen, friend of the program, Michigan man, Adam Schefter. Yeah, Shefty! Nothing like a warm reaction from Ohio. How you doing, Shefty? Shefty, can you give us one OH real quick just to hear how the reaction goes?
10:33Pat McAfee:An O. That's good. That's good, Shefty. That's good. All right, Shefty's traveling from one posh event to another. We understand how Michigan operates. Can we get a couple quick updates before we get a chance to speak to these Hall of Famers? Trey Hendrickson has come out and said, hey, nothing's changed. Where do we stand with Trey Hendrickson over there in Cincinnati? And the boys are very disappointed in Trey Hendrickson. How does everybody else kind of feel about this? Well, listen, they have near agreement on the length of the deal, the value of the deal, but not the guaranteed money in the deal.
11:08And that's the mistake to point.
11:20Pat McAfee:I don't know if that was just the entire state throttling Sheffy there. I don't know if that was the Cincinnati Bengals throttling Sheffy there, but I do know I couldn't hear a word he was saying, but it sounds like from what Trey Hendrickson has said, nothing has changed. And in my eyes, the only thing he would be trying to do is extend an olive branch. You guys, You? Not me. Definitely you. It was you. You were on SportsCenter yesterday saying, this guy tucked his tail. That's what you said. And he started it. I said, you said it. You said it. You two definitely said it. What if a deal gets done here?
11:53Pat McAfee:I think that would be considered a success. But it seems like everybody's thinking that Trey Hendrickson looks like a coward is what we said yesterday. But I don't know. That's what you said. You said. Not everybody else said that. He is trying to get back in the ball. He wants to get a deal done. That's what I think is a good thing. but business-wise, I don't know how this works out for him. I hope it gets done, but every day he's done on the field. It's a new D coordinator, right? Yeah. New D line coach, new everything. Is he getting traded? How do we see this ending if we could just put kind of a bow on Trey Hendrickson?
12:20I see him just eating$350 ,000 in fines and then playing. And then, you know, hopefully he has a great year. And then next year he has a great free agency where he does get the money he wants. But coming in and saying like, yeah, no, nothing's changed. I'm just here now. It's like, okay, well, everything you set out to do, you've accomplished none of it so that kind of stinks we all like we said yesterday think trade deserves 35 million dollars a year so like because of that if you and other people believe that which a majority of the people do then you stay like it reminds you the chris jones thing when chris jones was going with the chiefs he was eating all those fines yeah but he still stayed strong he missed the first actual game against the lions at home when on banner night he was up there with the Katz brothers in the suite, and then he got paid a bunch of money, and then after he got paid a bunch of money, he got an extension.
13:09So it's like, hey, Trey, you did the exact opposite thing. You bent the knee to Mike Brown, who was basically shitting on you, for three months. Katie Blackburn was saying stuff about you for three months, and now, after this started in February, it's over in July with you basically just looking like an absolute clown. That's from your point of view. From my point of view, because you deserve $35 million, and you're going to play for 16.
13:31Pat McAfee:Well, we'll see. Maybe they'll give him a little bit of a raise. Maybe this olive branch will be nice because that was originally being talked about. All I know is Trey Hendrickson back in football camp. It's because he's a football guy. Love you, Trey. He's a good team guy. He's a good team guy. He was talking to Shamar. He's coaching him up. Hey, you need to do this. Can't just run your shoulder into an offensive lineman's chest. Not going to work. Maybe use your arms a little bit. That's good news. Maybe the Bengals make a run. And also, people are saying that Joe Burrow right now is looking better than he's ever looked.
13:59Pat McAfee:This is the best Joe Burrow that they've ever seen. Obviously, he's only had a couple healthy training camps. The Cincinnati Bengals notoriously start very slow, put themselves in such a deep hole that all they're trying to do is climb out of it the rest of the season. Will this year be different? And is Dre Hendrickson starting week one? Ooh. Yes. I'm going to say yes. Because even if he signs three days before the game, he should start. Yeah. AJ, how do you feel about being on SportsCenter, telling Dre Hendrickson he popped his tail? I missed that. You let me know when I got here exactly. I thought you were a player.
14:28That's how they popped me up. You know, taking it out of context, I think. I was speaking as if I was Todd Schmidt. I was relaying the message from him. Classic journalism. Ladies and gentlemen, it is time to celebrate the Hall of Fame.
14:38Pat McAfee:It is time to celebrate this year's class. Ladies and gentlemen, joining us now is a man who is the all-time leader in touchdowns at the tight end position. Changed the game. Kent State basketball legend, Chargers icon. Now, officially, Pro Football Hall of Famer. Ladies and gentlemen, Antonio Gates. Yeah. Careful. It's Slippy. Athlete, it's an athlete. Slippy down there. What's up man? What's up man? See you too. Yeah, be careful, don't lean back.
15:20What you said, they gotta be an athlete to get up here? Yeah, but you gotta be the major athlete to get up here on this list.
15:26Pat McAfee:Well, thank God it's you, because we went through your shit today. I don't think we knew your history. We knew you were a Kent State basketball player. We had no idea that you were enrolled at Michigan State when Coach Saban was there. Asked to play both sports. He said, no, not going to do that. I think even you're going to the defensive side. Then you transferred to Eastern Michigan or something like that. I was on tour like an artist. Then you went to Juco. Then you went to Kent State. And I was committed to Kent State in high school my senior year for a point. Went up on a visit. They have a whole mural about Antonio Gates up there and you hooping.
15:55Pat McAfee:And it was like real shit. Like you were like real hooper. Now the world knows you as the greatest tight end touchdown scorer of all time. When you think back to those days, did you know that the cards were gonna be football? Did you think it was gonna be basketball? Like, when you look back now as an official Hall of Famer, I think it all worked out well. But was there a lot of moments like wonder how it was gonna go for you? Well, you know, you always, you know, you always optimistic that things will go the right direction. But for me, it was just all about basketball at that point. I think, you know, even when I went to Michigan State, me going to Michigan State was me, you know, having an opportunity to play the game of basketball.
16:30So never in a million years that I thought I'd be standing here in Canton, Ohio. Being a pro football.
16:38Pat McAfee:Well, you're sitting right now. You will be standing later. But nonetheless, it all remains. And we looked up your stats. 955 catches.
16:50Pat McAfee:11 ,841 receiving yards.
16:56Pat McAfee:116 touchdowns most in the history of the nfl you and philip rivers had a great connection but the way you played the position was so much different than everybody in the past how easy was it transforming into a tight end in the nfl and then how easy was it transforming the position of tight end forever because if you look now a lot more antonio gates is at tight end than there was before you got delete you changed the game forever brother yes i appreciate that well it wasn't easy because I got cursed out a lot. So just so we clear. I got cursed out a lot. I did a lot of off-platform things. And at the time, I think that is what it means to redefine certain things.
17:35When you do things off-platform, people don't agree with them at times. I like to use the analogy of the enemy of great is good. Hell yeah. You know, so that was kind of what it was for me. I would see guys who did it the right way. And I was there as a basketball player. I had things that I was used to doing and creating separation. And, you know, I was going against a guy 6 '9", 16, so I had to find a way to get my shot off at times. So playing the game of football, I would do that, and coach say, go to 16. I'm like, well, he's sitting at 16, coach. I'm going to go to 14. You know, a guy that would knock your head off sitting at 16 yards.
Read the full transcript
18:11I'm not going to 16, coach. And I think what happened is that they start giving me the ability to make the adjustment. And I think when you think of a good athlete, you think of his ability to adapt in the actual space at that moment. And so when I would run around, I really don't never really know what I'm about to do. I just make the adjustment at the right time. And I think that's what gave me an opportunity to be successful in the game of football.
18:33Pat McAfee:So on that note, we were talking about you earlier today. A.J. Hawk was a rookie in a preseason game. Yeah, yeah. I don't know if you remember the rep. He does. You were on, I think you were at the end of the line, then you motioned out a little bit. and A.J. Hawk, linebacker, has you. A.J. was trying to disguise that he was not covering you. Okay? You knew this guy. You guys did a skim milk check on this guy. And he said that you hit him with how many moves did you say? It felt like 15 moves within like a half a second. And obviously you got wide open, you get a catch. And then he said immediately afterwards you were like, hey, you got to look at my hips, dude.
19:08Pat McAfee:He started coaching him up. How much of that, what was your relationship like with the guys you played against? And at what point did you realize like, I can get open against basically anybody. But, you know, it's a natural reinforcement when you catch passes. So when I first started in the NFL, I went against a guy named Rod Woodson. He was playing safety for the Raiders at the time, and I was a rookie. And I had been playing video games with Rod Woodson my whole life. So I remember Drew Brees was the quarterback at the time. And they called him to play, and it's like a slot. I'm out the slot formation.
19:41It's backside, and it's one-on-one. I got a corner out. And in my mind, I'm thinking, I've been playing video games with Rod Wilson. There's no way I'm going to get open against this dude. He's a Hall of Famer, right? So I went up and made a catch on Rod Wilson. It was like a third down conversion. And I think what happens is that it sends a signal to your brain that I belong here. And I think ultimately the more plays I made, the more I felt like, okay, you know what? I belong here. I think you've got to have it mentally first before you can honestly play it and let it come out in the game. So you've got to have it mentally to make no mistake about it.
20:11No matter how humble I sound, how humble I see, when I play, I feel like I got this dude. I can beat him. You got to have that part in order for it to come to fruition in real life.
20:21Pat McAfee:The conversation with the lads afterwards, that was Rod Woodson, bro. Yeah. Did you see that? D-Bun has a question for you. Yeah, a lot of the guys playing now look up at you. Pat mentioned it. You changed the position. But who were some of those legends, some of those Hall of Famers? I know Kellen Winslow Sr. played for the Chargers. Who were some of those legends you looked up to coming up at the tight end position? Well, you know, again, basketball was my forte. I didn't really have, you know, guys that I would say I look up to in a sense. Yeah. But I know the idea of when you make things happen is the respect factor of guys who created the lane for you.
20:57And you name the guy like Kellen Winslow Sr., you know, Marty Sean Harmon would always say, you know, he would compare me to Ozzie Newsome a lot. Right. I'm from Detroit, so I knew a lot about Charlie Sanders, guys that just paved the way and created that lane. So, you know, when you think about the sport, and then, you know, obviously, you know, the Tony Gonzalez and the Shannon Sharps and the younger guys now. So, there's so many guys, and I like to use that analogy because they always talk about, you know, who's the best tight end or who's the best this, and that's the comparison in sports.
21:30But the reality of it is that I treated like a four-by-one team. We all had the baton at one time, and we ran as fast as we can with it. And I think that's really what it's all about. It's now we're passing it to the next generation. And I see guys like George Kittles, you know what I mean? The guys that's keeping it going. And I think that's what it was for me. A guy gave it to me, and I had it at one moment. And I said, I got to run my best race. Fast time. And then pass it to somebody else. And hopefully, hey, it's your turn. You got to run as fast as you can. I think that's really what it's all about.
21:59And I hope, you know, now you see the generation, and they're constantly growing at the position. So I'm happy to be a part of that.
22:05Pat McAfee:How do you feel about tight end university and everything? like that talk about changing the position i mean that was kind of the goal of that is like i think it was financial business talk too like hey we're starting to catch the ball a lot more and they're trying to talk about us as tackles we're actually wide receivers as the market kind of change for everybody but also like give an inside game to everybody you talk about passing the baton feels like they're trying to do that have you witnessed that from before have you gone to it and what are your thoughts on it well i was i was invited to it but i haven't been yet but i do like what they're doing and i think you missed the taylor swift concert yeah yeah right my daughter They'll be mad about that.
22:36Door to left. But, yeah, I do like what they're doing because, at the end of the day, that's really what it's about, right? It's serving a purpose and having a platform to be able to say, all right, well, I had this opportunity to do X, Y, and Z, and this is the space that I was in. Now, let me tell you what you should do and what you shouldn't do. And I think that is a great idea for the tight ends and the next generation.
22:57Pat McAfee:AJ has a question for you as an Ohio guy hits the horn as he rides by in the hallway. It's fascinating to listen to you talk about running routes and I would assume like you had a lot of freedom to run, you know, work off the leverage of your defender. Like was that always a thing when you were young getting into the league? And obviously how do you build that rapport with Drew Brees and obviously Phillip Rivers who saw the connection you guys had. Like how do you earn that trust in the quarterback and the coach to where, hey, I'm going to get open. Yeah. You told me why. Yeah. Well, you got to earn it.
23:25That's for sure. You know, I think what happens is that it's repetition. It starts with underneath the surface. so they would know that at the end of the day I'm working beyond my means. So it means more to me to have success than it does to the coach, staff, and everybody around me. I think that's just something that you build. That's what the training camp is for, right? You start with them dog days, that foundation. You're working hard. I'm the last one to leave. I'm working hard. I'm running more. I'm running extra. I'm doing extra. And ultimately when I get out there, it means just as much for me to do it right than anything because I know guys are depending on me.
23:58So that was my philosophy going into any game is that, man, these dudes believe in me the game plan is surrounded by number 85 I need to make sure I deliver and I think that meant the world to me that guys would believe in me to that level so I would always make sure I would do the best I can and you know set the tone you know the fast
24:17Pat McAfee:as I can Ty has a question for you Hall of Fame Antonio yeah so just just curious he just he just mentioned uh Phil Rivers there in terms of like whenever his name gets brought up it's always hey is this guy a Hall of Famer. Obviously, we see his numbers. They're incredible. But then the Super Bowl discussion always comes up. What was it like having him as a teammate? We've all seen the videos. Like, his person, I truly believe he's one of one in terms of, like, his personality. When you look back at your career, like, how thankful were you to have a guy like that as your quarterback? And just what was it like being teammates with him?
24:52Wow. I mean, you're talking about a fiery, passionate. His IQ was unmatched, man. And I always knew that he was going to come compete. I think that's what we had in common is that our ability to go out and compete. I knew he was going to give it his all. And he's going to trash talk along the way. So, I mean, you know, so you got to be prepared because he'll be trash talking to guys that you got to block. So, you know what I'm saying? So that was the hardest thing is, you know, guy, you know, Richard Seymour is a big dude, Phillip. So, you know, you keep talking to him. I got to trade block Richard Seymour and he's mad at Phillip.
25:29You know what I'm saying? So it was the greatest fit in the world to have a guy like that on your side because it makes the game fun too. Because at the end of the day, we play the game for all the other stuff, X's and O's, but you kind of keep that same kid energy, that 14, 15-year-old kid. Let's go out here and have fun, man. We playing in the NFL. Man, we got the best job in the world. We get to play games and get paid. Man, that's what he loved to do is he loved to play football.
25:52Pat McAfee:You look pretty jocked still. Look pretty jocked. I don't know if that's just going to be forever you or if you're still getting after it or not. Kids. You think you don't get enough credit for being able to block? Nobody ever mentions your name with block now. I know. I know. Well, people don't know this, but in order to start for Marty Scheinheimer, you've got to be able to block power and counter, man. So I started with Marty Scheinheimer, and the reason why I started is because of my ability to block power and trade block, go to the backside back, and ability to block counter. So people really don't never say that.
26:24But the athletic part came later on. I had to block power and counter because AOT was getting the ball. You know what I'm saying? You could say you cut your teeth. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They earned the passes. They're blocking it. Nobody ever says that about an attorney. They say, oh, this guy, 160 touchdowns. I know. This guy's a threat through the sky.
26:44Pat McAfee:11 ,841 yards. Holy shit. They don't talk about it. Yeah. You have to build a block. You have to be tough, too. Yeah, that's how you get the ball. Last question here. this guy looks still jacked and obviously always going to be athletic go ahead con man oh no connor's microphone's off oh no oh no connor's microphone is here here here there it is okay nice catch obviously uh antonio um you know you play basketball can't say that's part of it i don't think any of us knew how much success you guys went to an elite eight you know and you're the star of that team that's absurd uh now that you are you know hall of famer in the nfl it is there and congratulations is incredible.
27:24Is there a shot maybe now turn back to basketball joining Ice Cube's big three? Possibly get back into hooping? Are you still hooping or no? No, I'm not hooping, man. Football is still wearing a tear on your body, so I can't really go out and play as much now. But I do watch my kids play. I enjoy watching them play, but I do not pick up the basketball. Haven't picked it up probably in about six years. Six years? Six years. It's like six years I haven't picked up the basketball. Yeah, I mean, I still I mean, I was a scorer. Yeah, I'm left-handed. You know what I'm saying? You can't shoot. I can see what I'm saying.
27:58You know what I mean? You got to have the ball. You know what I'm saying? Right. I'm left-handed. Yeah, but he got it like this. You know what I'm saying? So you got to have a flick of the wrist. It's your Hall of Fame weekend. Right, right. It's your Hall of Fame weekend. You haven't shot a ball in six years? Six years. I'd light your ass up right now. I'd score. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
28:19Pat McAfee:I think the game was so lucky that you played it. I think the league was lucky to have you. I think the Chargers organization as a whole was lucky to have you represent them. And I guess the last question would be, what are your thoughts on where the Chargers are headed right now? We love Harbaugh. We love Jim Harbaugh. We love Justin Herbert. We love national champion of Michigan. Jim Harbaugh, now the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. The ownership spent$300 million on a practice facility in 2024, 2025. Like, that never happens anymore. The Spanos feels like they are trying to move the chips in.
28:55Pat McAfee:Tough division out there. We all understand that. What are your thoughts on the state of the Chargers and what it could be out there in Los Angeles? Well, obviously, you know, the more they be together, the more continuity that he would build. Last year was his first year as a head coach, and we were super excited. And to see the situation with what I thought was going to be a challenge to change the style of what the West Coast ball is normally like, coming from the Midwest, the running style. Oh, got it. But to see that, because, you know, in the West Coast, they like to throw the football. So to see that, you know, you start building the foundation from the offensive line and start building out, and to see that happening in us winning games is refreshing, to say the least.
29:34So I'm super excited about what they're going to do after a year on their hardball and then the guys being together, you know, collectively for a whole year.
29:42Pat McAfee:Who wins tonight? And by how much? I mean, I got my shirt on, man. You know what I mean? I got my shirt. You ain't got to ask me no questions. Okay. We got some real degenerates around here that are going to gamble on tonight's game. Do you have any inside information on the Los Angeles Chargers tonight? Yeah, they're going to play. Okay. Hall of Famer, all-time leading touchdown scorer at the tight end position in the history of the NFL. Legend, ladies and gentlemen, busted-ass jumper heaven.
30:13Appreciate you, man. Appreciate it, man. Appreciate it, bro. Good to see you, man. Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.
30:25Pat McAfee:Appreciate you Antonio. What a legend. I'm not a lefty. Not at all. What was that guy's deal? Just talking, Junk. I had no idea he was a lefty. I should have known. He was showing his clips right there. I saw he got a nice little jumper. Dude, at Kent State, when I went to the visit, great time by the way. Great time. Oh yeah? Great time at that. We had a good time. They had a mural of him down the whole hallway, and every one of them was, like, nasty highlight pictures. He's a dog. It's crazy. Look at him. Get off me. And now he's a Hall of Famer here in Canton, Ohio. I'll tell you what, the weather has certainly been a factor.
31:05Pat McAfee:Lost a couple speakers. We lost the microphone. But these football people have been standing in a parking lot. Oh, yeah. I can't hear things at times. I don't think they can either. But what an honor it is to kick off football here in Canton, Ohio. I also appreciate the truck drivers that roll by and hit the old, how do you do it? Because they might be watching while they're driving. We'd like to tell you, keep your eyes on the road. It's raining out here. But also, bogey up there on the right. I think we saw him on the way in. Keep your eyes peeled. Ladies and gentlemen, the Hall of Fame train continues.
31:39Pat McAfee:Antonio Gates is first. Ladies and gentlemen, joining us now, a man who had 54 interceptions in his career. 787 tackles. 5 forced fumbles. 9 TDs. 3 time All Pro. 6 time Pro Bowler. Eagles legend Eric Eller.
32:07Gaps up a John with a beer out there. How are you doing man?
32:13Pat McAfee:Thank you for coming. Hell yes. Thank you for that. Legend. Congratulations. Congratulations, man. Hey. Yeah. Congrats, Hall of Famer, dude. I appreciate you, man. Appreciate you, man. Come on. Yeah. Congratulations to you. We were in the hotel last night down there in the lobby restaurant area. Right. And we saw you hanging out over there. We saw everybody kind of rolling through there. How has it been to just be at the position of the same exact place as all the legends that have basically created this league? Was last night a cool moment? Whenever you get told, obviously, you're going into the Hall of Fame, very emotional.
32:48Pat McAfee:Has it all settled in, especially after now you've got here to Canton and seen the other gold jackets? You know what? It really has. I think the knock on the door with Randall McDaniel kind of solidified it. Me and Randall went on a recruiting trip to college together when we were 15 or 16 years old. So, obviously, Randall, one of the best guards in the history of the National Football League. So, they did a pretty good job hiding it from me. but when I opened that door and saw Randall there with that gold jacket, man, it just kind of like cemented everything, you know, all the hard work, the sacrifice, and that's what this is all about, you know, that journey there.
33:25Pat McAfee:It's nice to be acknowledged too, you know? Yeah, for sure. And I think finally getting the acknowledgement, was there a sense of fulfillment? Was there a sense of I knew all along or what is like kind of the mindset of it? No, not for me. Gratitude? Not for me. I think validation for the family members and all those teammates. Coaches. And that support and coaches who all, you know, believed in me. I was given like a piece long ago that, you know, it was just about time, right? And I was never really tripping and worried about if I would get here. I knew it would be a time when I'd be here. I love it.
33:57It was just about validating all of those people in my corner, right? the coaches, the players, the fans, you know, who always had the stats and was talking about, yeah, you should be there with Darryl Green and Prime and those guys. So I'm just glad to be on the same team with all my brothers. That's awesome. D-Bun has a question for you. So along the way, you mentioned the coaches, teammates. Who was that coach that you would say had the biggest impact on you on your game? And what was that moment or the biggest thing that you figured out during the game? Because I know it's a lot of people watching, players, fans, young kids who want to be where you are.
34:32So what was that thing that you learned that kind of took you a long way in your career? Well, let me tell you, man. Coach named Willie Shaw. And he's David Shaw's dad who coached at Stanford. But Willie coached in this league a long time. And it was about preparation, kind of understanding that to be a great player, it was about playing from your neck up. You know, you can have all the speed and the height and all that stuff. But my deal was I'm going to be where the ball is at the end of the play. I can care less about what Jerry or Michael or, you know, what these great receivers are doing at the line of scrimmage.
35:08I'm going to be where the ball is going to be at the end of the play. And to be able to get to that point, you have to have great preparation and have a great understanding of what not just the quarterback is doing, but what the offensive coordinator is doing. So on the offseason, I would take whoever's offense is that one, and usually it was the West Coast offense, I would take that offense in the offseason and I would be Jerry Rice. I would run every route that Jerry Rice is going to run. I would take the Dallas Cowboys offense, and I would run Michael Irvin's routes. I would be the Buffalo Bills.
35:40I would run Andre Reid's routes. I would be the Atlanta Falcons' run Andre Ryzen route. So when I got to the game and it was a pertinent situation, hey, man, if it's going to be a quick slant, Jerry, you know you're going to run it. I'm going to run it too. So I'm going to be in the right spot. So it didn't always work. But, of course, when you're going against someone like my buddy Sterling Sharp. Yes, congratulations to Sterling. Yeah, Sterling's big time. He's a different dude, man. He's like a – he was a T.O. before T.O. Big, strong, physical. If you're getting press in front of Sterling, he's going to grab you and move you.
36:16Yeah, yeah, yeah. And put you in his place.
36:17Pat McAfee:So, on that note, let's talk about how football used to be. I know the OGs always talk about that. I see you've got some busted-ass fingers. You know what I mean? Always. Always. Always. Always. Always. Always. There's jerseys, obviously, and helmets and everything. When you view today's game and today's DBs, I mean, we got guys running 4-2s, 4-3s out there, and they're not allowed to grab as much. They've got to be, like, very tricky with it. What do you think of the state of DB play right now in covering people? I love it. I love it. As many of you know, I work with the Raiders, so, you know, I do post-game, pre-game, interview players, and my deal is I love talking to the receivers, Devontae Adams and those kind of guys, to kind of get an idea of what the DBs now have to deal with.
36:59And, man, not being able to get your hands on guys now. Not able to dislocate your pinky on this guy. It's a whole different game. So, man, so for the corners who are balling today, man, they're really cerebral players now, right? They have all the athleticism and all the measurables that you have to have. But I love the fact these guys are cerebral. I have a lot of these young players come approach me and talk to me about the game and how they can get better. So that's really what stands out now. These young guys having a great idea of kind of what's happening and what's going on.
37:29Pat McAfee:AJ has a question for you. He also has some terrible figures. When you watch the game now, do you think the game is always evolving? It feels like for a little bit we had, hey, we're spreading out. They call it basketball on grass, whatever. I feel like now at least the game is getting more physical. We were at Steelers training camp. They were tackling to the ground. I saw what the Browns were tackling to the ground. I feel like we hear Ben Johnson makes comments about the Bears having their longest, toughest practice today. and seeing who's going to survive. Do you think the game is coming back even to a more safer but even more physical form than it has been maybe the last five, eight years?
38:00Without a doubt. And the big reason why is because the Bears, the Eagles. The Eagles are a physical football team, right? And they're the champs right now, right? So whatever that champ mentality is, that's what everyone else is going to try and copy. I imagine this year everyone's going to try and get a running back, right, and try and figure out a way that you can get to some third and short situations. But as you know, there's not going to be more three days, right? We used to have three days. Not me. Not me. I missed the three days. You missed the three days? Thank God. Oh, my goodness.
38:28Pat McAfee:Yeah, twos. Two days, we'd have two practices of full hitting, and then the third practice would be conditioning. Right? So it was all. It was like six weeks long. Oh, man. I feel like. Oh, man. Who put that tweet out the other night? Oh, my goodness. Somebody put a tweet out the other night, OG, that was like, I went to training camp for six weeks. We had three practices. It was like back in my day, uphill both ways. It has changed immensely. The physical presence. All the money. Yes. And you have to protect your guys, your assets. You've got to protect your assets. The one thing that has to continue to improve, though, is the tackling.
39:01Right? That's the one thing. If you're going to be physical defensively, we have to figure out a way to really get the ball carrier on the ground without putting yourself in jeopardy. So I think that's the next phase defensively is to make sure we're tackling properly so we can continue to play that physical game. but after those guys are finished, they don't have the head trauma and things like that.
39:20Pat McAfee:Speaking of head trauma, you guys used to do some wild stuff all the time. Now hold up, hold up, hold up. What do you mean, you guys? You. But now I will say, we appreciate your era of football so much. None of this happens without you guys. And then obviously the guys that are before you. Football is beautiful. It is. What you guys did. I think Antonio Gates was a great way to describe it. He talked about the tight end position, how everybody says, who's the greatest, who's the greatest. He's like, I took the baton and carried it to the next generation. It feels like all of football is like that.
39:49Pat, let me tell you something, man. I was in the perfect sweet spot, right? So I played against Joe Montana and those 49er teams, 88 and 89, when they were rolling, right? They had Jerry, Mike, they had all tremendous players. I ended my career playing against Tom Brady. So I have a window of looking at all these great players, And then I'm able to sit on the sideline and watch Mahomes. So I just kind of take it all in, and it's changed from era to era. But the one thing that remains constant is it's really all about the team. There's no one individual that's going to be able to win by himself.
40:32It has to be a collective.
40:33Pat McAfee:Adam Vinatieri was able to win all by himself. No, listen. Now, I was in that game, right? I started my career against the Bears in the playoffs. What game are you talking about? What game are you talking about? Like, listen, listen. The Fog Bowl. I was in the Fog Bowl in 88 and then ended my career at the Tuck Rule game, right? So. Wow, what a run. And I'm not sure if you guys know, they call a timeout before the play. Oh, yeah. Before the sack, right? Brady comes over to the offensive coordinator, Charlie Weiss. I'm on the Patriots' sideline, and I hear Charlie tell him, hey, we're going to go three by one and throw a slant the backside.
41:13They don't see me. I run back to the huddle, and I'm like, hey, man, listen, listen. They're going three by one. They're going to throw the slant backside, and I hope I'm on that slant side because I'm taking it to the house, right? And so we get the slant. My linebacker is William Thomas, a great friend of mine. I tell him, Willie T, sit in the first window, and you're going to get a pick. If not, I'm going to get one. So Woodson comes off the side, sacks him. I run to the sideline, tell everybody the story, and then there's that pause. Oh, no. That pause. And that referee, whoever his name is, he goes to the sideline, and he's looking up and listening to this and that.
41:47I'm not sure what happens after that. Gets the call. And now Raiders fans forever. That's right. That's right. That's right. They are. Yeah, that's right. They are for sure.
41:56Pat McAfee:And by the way, Adam Vinatieri misses that kick. We don't have the conversation. That's right. But Adam Vinatieri does what Adam Vinatieri does. walks out in the middle of hell. He knocks that thing through just to make sure you understand. Diggs has the last question for you. Yeah, Eric, you started your career with Buddy Ryan. You ended your career with John Gruden. Now you get to see Pete Carroll almost every single day. Do you like when the head coach has a big personality, he's a little feisty? Yeah, I do. I do. I think that bodes well, especially for our group being the Raiders. This is our fifth head coach in five years, right?
42:27But Pete's the kind of guy who can get it done. He has receipts that he's been there to the big games. When you go to Kansas City and you're playing the Chiefs, you're playing the Chargers, you're playing the Broncos, who have coaches who have been there and done that before consistently, you need to have a coach that has done the same thing. And I think him and Geno are going to bring a little more pepper to the Raiders.
42:50Pat McAfee:Speaking of pepper, how's the speech? It's good, man. It's good. You feel good about it? I do. I do feel good. In the mirror, we've done it. In front of family, we've done it. Only to ourselves, we've done it. How much work can we do? But you know what, when I'm sleeping at night, boom, I go over it. It's in there. The only thing is guys on the teams are giving me calls late. You know, whoever they think is going to call late is going to get mentioned. But no. No, no, no. I keep looking at the Venmo. The Venmo's not getting bigger. So, you know what I'm saying? You're not getting mentioned if the Venmo account has not changed.
43:20Pat McAfee:We can't wait to watch you be celebrated all weekend. Congratulations. How about Canton, Ohio? These people are showing up. Oh, man, it's been awesome, man. It's been awesome. There you go. See, look at that. Represent, baby. Yeah. This guy's been drinking John Daly's all morning. Yes, he has. $5 John Daly's right now. That is what I learned. There you go. And then the Philadelphia Eagles, John over here was chugging a beer. Oh, yeah, the cowboy guy right here. Yeah.
43:47Chug it. Chug it. Chug it. Chug it. Chug it. Chug it. Chug it. Yeah. This guy's got to go rest at it. 3.30. And on that note, E-A-G-L-E-S, Eagles!
44:11Pat McAfee:Couple Johns out here. The whole world's going to celebrate you. Congrats on being a Hall of Famer. Thank you for coming by. Cheers, man. Ladies and gentlemen, Hall of Famer, Eric Allen. Congratulations, man. 14 years in the secondary. Crazy. That's a long time, D-B. Legend. Congrats. His fingers. There's four of them. He's got a 40%. His fingers. Yeah, that arrow, I think, the majority of those players. They were fingering pads, right? I mean, we were trying to get. Just everything. We were trying to get right in there. Tackle in. Jersey's a lot looser, too, so I think the finger's getting jammed and Jersey's getting caught and ripped up.
44:47Twisted. Yeah.
44:48Pat McAfee:Let's get a little breezier. The rain has not relented. I do appreciate everybody hanging out with us, chugging these$5 drinks. There's a bunch of them back here. That's a good price. I think$5 is a good price because it's probably, what, like, $1 worth of stuff,$1.50 in there. They could charge something astronomical like a lot of people do. $5 drinks, it feels like$5 beers,$5 John Daly's,$5 this,$5 that. Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise. Jared Allen.
45:22Pat McAfee:Jared, can I go through your stats because you just blew right through it. I was supposed to do the stats while you were walking up. Oh, yeah. My bad. Ladies and gentlemen, a man who had 136 sacks, 32 forced fumbles, two tuds, and forced one man to run out of the back of an end zone. That's tough, Dan. It's going to be a long weekend for you, I think. Thank you for the long experience. You have Jared Allen. Appreciate it. Thanks for having me. Congratulations. Thank you so much. Well earned. Well earned. Well deserved. How does it feel to be here? We saw you last night looking very trim. We'll get into that here in a matter of moments.
46:09Pat McAfee:But how does it feel to be amongst the immortals basically here in the NFL? Good. Good. Just take it as it comes. I don't try to look farther than like my feet. You know what I mean? So, but it's good. It's a great honor. It's one of those surreal things because you can't really do anything to earn it. And you get the award. You get the recognition so many years after you play. You did a lot to earn it. No, I'll say after you retired. But when you're playing, you're not thinking about that. You're trying to win Super Bowls. You're just trying to be the best guy you can be. You're trying to outdo yourself from the year before.
46:37And this becomes a byproduct of it. So it's one of those surreal moments where you're kind of reliving the past and get recognized for it so many years later. So it's good. But the coolest part about it is being up with the legends. Like, you know, sitting there talking with Randall McDaniel, you know, meeting guys that, you know, I used to watch the 100 toughest films for every high school game, 100 toughest NFL, 100 toughest men, and to actually meet those guys, you know. You're seeing some of the guys in the past, meeting their wives and their families. So that's cool. And just listening to guys talk.
47:06I was talking to Jan Stetterud the other day, you know, fellow Norwegian. Oh, yeah. And so just, you know, Willie Lanier, hearing his story, and I haven't seen Willie for years and years and years since the Chiefs. So just super cool, super fun experience.
47:20Pat McAfee:I haven't heard y 'all in Spenner is there. I had to write that one down there. AJ has a question for you, Jared. Yeah, Pat asked Eric Allen about a speech. What about your speech? Did you write it yourself? Do you feel comfortable? All me. All me. Did you actually write it? Is it going off the top of your head? Read it? What do you do? So I started off the top of my head, right? And then the hall is very controlling, they try to be sometimes. They want you to check in. I refuse to check in. I refuse to be censored. You're not going to tell me what I can say. They want you to send an outline. They want you to send an outline.
47:50What could this speech be? And I'm like, absolutely not. I will not send a speech until yesterday. No, so I wrote it myself. It was all up in my head. My wife was like, you might want to actually write it down. So as great thoughts popped in my head, I wrote them down, organized them. You know what? It's pretty awesome. Maybe. I don't know.
48:09Pat McAfee:Send a lot of love to a lot of people. Yeah, it's a typical. Let's be honest. There's 380 speeches that have been. I'm number 380, right? so 379 people have spoken before me there's not gonna be a lot of original stuff coming out of my mouth there could be sure how a shout out to my high school coach believed in me yeah we're gonna hit the topics we're gonna hit the topics throw a little humor in there like wife love you love everything so much i was like this could either go 23 minutes with me rambling or two minutes and be like thank you everybody no don't do two minutes we need you right there in the middle okay we're good i just ran it through the teleprompter i'm 11 minutes with pause so we're Okay, good.
48:44Pat McAfee:They banked in the clap and laugh break. Is that a laugh break? That's up to the audience. Oh, they'll deliver. These people will deliver. I got some jokes that I hope don't fall flat. Cars on the Highway will also be cheering for you as you go. D-Bud has a question for you, Jared. Yeah, when Antonio was up here, he talked about him watching Rod Woodson and having a rout when he made a catch, and that was kind of one of his moments. He was like, okay, if I get open against Rod Woodson, I can get open against anybody. You had a long, elite career, but was it a play or a game or maybe a tackle you went up against, a quarterback you sacked that you was like, okay, I've kind of arrived even though you obviously broke your ass off the whole way?
49:23Yeah, that's actually part of it. I don't want to give the story away because it's in my speech. Don't, don't, don't, don't, don't. Yeah, but early in my career, let's put it this way, I took some lumps in the practice field, right? And you learn very fast. I had the displeasure and pleasure of practicing against Willie Rofe every day. And I think he's the greatest tackle to ever play the game. And some people agree, some people don't. That was my opinion. But I knew if I could learn to beat him, I could beat anybody. And so, you know, I think probably one of the first times I figured, you know, we're going to be good was just, A, learning through Willie and knowing what I was practicing up against.
49:59But, yeah, I mean, I got my first sack, I think it was like week three or four, something like that, against the Texans. And, I mean, just obliterated the tackle. He disappeared. He disappeared. And I was like, okay, we can do this. Oh, my God. Yeah. How many of these guys are in the league? A lot of them. Did you do this immediately? No. So that, so when I was a rookie and my first couple years, the vets, you know, if the vets tell you what to do, you got to do it. So the vets would make stuff up for me to do on Saturday.
50:26Pat McAfee:Jack Sawyer was just carrying TJ Watts' helmet off the field yesterday. So like one game, they'd make me do spirit fingers. No joke. I got a$5 ,000 fine my very first sack. It was a preseason, so it didn't count against Eli. I did the old slap the leg, flex the leg out, like bodybuilders deal. They said it was sexually suggestive. Well, put it to you. We don't know, especially with your sexual look. So then I had to do the lawnmower one week. They would make me do high kicks. So finally, they just made me do all sorts of dumb stuff. The Neal Smith got put in the Ring of Honor, and I did his celebration, hit a home run, had a couple of sacks against the good old Chargers.
51:08I also love Phillip Rivers. It was like he held the ball a long time. Love you, Phillip.
51:13Pat McAfee:And was not the greatest mobile quarterback of all time. Boy, the guy could play ball. Oh, fantastic. And talk shit. Oh, I love it. That's what I love about it. But I got a couple sacks, and Neil was like, hey, man, I appreciate you doing my celebration. You need to do something that's you. And I grew up on horse ranch, raining cutting horses, and I used to grow calf roping. And so we were talking about, I was like, man, when you calf rope, right, you throw the calf down, you tie up three legs, put your hands in the air to stop the clock. So we started doing that on quarterbacks about my second year, and it stuck.
51:39Pat McAfee:Legendary. The best. Also, you're like the only cowboy doing light ranching. You ride a damn horse in the retirement thing. It's like, are you still riding horses? Are we still light ranching a little bit? Oh, yeah. I'm still roping, all that fun stuff. My hands are just healing up. I got tore up at a jackpot. A jackpot? What is a jackpot? It's a rodeo? Roping, yeah. It's just a roping competition. Are you in it? Yeah. Are you by far the largest human being that's on top of these horses that are doing these things? Yes. Now, on that note, you're much smaller than you were. Correct. I don't want to give away the story, but as soon as we saw you, we thought you were doing like the Ironman cycling race.
52:14Pat McAfee:The post-NFL career. Nope. That's not the case. Actually, something very scary. So at first, I realized muscle weighs more than fat, so I quit lifting weights. Just get rid of the muscle. That's health tip number one, people. Get rid of the muscle. I'm on a lot of science trying to build that right now. But, okay, I'll listen. You're a whole fan. I'm teasing. But, no, so then I was losing weight rapidly, right? I couldn't figure out. Like, I randomly dropped 10 pounds. I couldn't gain it back, but randomly dropped 10 pounds. So I was doing all these tests trying to figure out, you know, what I had, make sure I wasn't dying.
52:46And then my doctor found out doing some absorption tests that I had alpha-gal, which I got bit by a Lone Star tick when I was out in the woods one time, and it makes me allergic to the sugars in mammal meat, any mammal meat. Wow. And so I was having some digestive issues and losing weight. So now I'm on the fins and feathers diet for a little bit so I can get it out of the diet. Fins and feathers, I like that. It's called fins and feathers. And, yeah, just trying to get weight back on. And now I've got to start lifting weights again.
53:10Pat McAfee:How long has this been happening? I don't know. I just found out. But it's been happening probably anywhere five or six years. I just found out this year, yeah. How long? Is this forever going to last? No, some people it's forever. Luckily, I have it light, so I might be able to get it out of my system. Some people have to carry EpiPen. Some people can't even, like, touch the grease or use hand soaps that have beef gelatin in it. Microdose it? Holy hell. That's crazy. Well, I'm happy you figured out what it was. Yeah, for sure. Because it did look like you had a 32-inch waist when you walked in.
53:35Yeah, 34. But, yeah, it's getting there. It's getting there. Nice. You could be a tailor. Yeah, we were eyeballing it.
53:40Pat McAfee:I was like, that dude's got a 32-inch waist, I think. What sucks is when you get smaller here, your head doesn't change. So my head looks bigger. It's like, oh, this is not a good look. Anteat the whole thing. Yeah. Yeah, but you look healthy. Yeah. Even though you weren't at all. I feel good. Outside looking in, you looked very good. And also, the hair still looks phenomenal. Oh, yeah. You know what? And, Connor, I appreciate you letting it flow tonight. Thank you. I really appreciate that. Funny enough, before the show, I said, fuck Jared Allen. I'm keeping my hair up. And then, you know, when I saw you, I said, you know, this is Jared Allen's weekend.
54:10You know, this is something that's cool. It's an incredible honor.
54:13Pat McAfee:Last night, for those that don't know, which is everybody that's listening, Jared Allen walked over to us in the lobby restaurant of the Hall of Fame thing. Walks over to us. We have, like, a 35-second encounter. Great to see you. holy hell, you look good. Well, I'm actually not good. Does the Lone Star thing, the whole alpha goal. And then he looks at the table. He sees Connor, and he goes, you got a man bun? And then he looks at the rest of the table. He goes, you guys are letting him do this? It was within 45 seconds, just murders Connor immediately. And Connor goes, okay. It's 90 degrees. Super defensive.
54:48Pat McAfee:He got super defensive. My hair's longer than yours. I'm like, can't tell it's in a bun, bro. My daughter's wearing buns. So that's cool. But with a mane like that, dude, and it's a windy day, that thing's just got to be cool. I know. Now, windy and wet, we were actually, I was going to ask you a completely different question, but what should I do with my hair, man? I don't know what to do with this. Every time you're in a public swimming pool, you should just duck your head under and just come out and just shake. That should be mandatory. I'm not swimming pools. I'm not swimming. What are we talking about?
55:20Pat McAfee:I like that idea with the pool, but that doesn't change my hair. I'm kind of a change of the hair. Hey, we got a minute and a half here. The hair is amazing. Before I heard out. You burying Connor was wonderful. Tone has a question for you. Last one. Minute and a half. Do you get a commission or a percentage when Miles and TJ get paid$40 million a year? I should. Like the DNs and the Eddressers before them? Do you guys get a commission for that? Unfortunately, I don't. And you know what? Every generation says the same thing. Oh, man, if I was playing today, I would have been super paid. Like imagine Reggie White was playing today.
55:51Boom. They would have to pay him a billion dollars. You'd be the first billion-dollar contract ever. No, I just like seeing the success, man. I like seeing guys that are still playing all four downs or all three downs. Like Miles Garrett up here, he's a beast. TJ, he's making plays just other than the pass rush. And that was what, you know, when you get high sack numbers, a lot of people start focusing on that, right? I came from, like, I heard Antonio talk about Marty Ball. I mean, I played against Antonio, right? But tight ends are still only half people, just so we're all killed. half people.
56:24We don't consider them full people. CJ Watt, Friar, Mooth, and one-on-one. But anyways, I like seeing those guys carrying the torch and still setting that pace of being a football player, not just a pass rusher.
56:37Pat McAfee:Well, Jared, we appreciate you being a football player, a great human, a hilarious one. And now, ladies and gentlemen, officially a Hall of Famer. Enjoy the hell out of your weekend. Ladies and gentlemen, Jared Allen! Appreciate you, Jared. Thank you so much, man. He's going to put some more weight on Yeah, I gotta go eat. Yeah, he needs to eat something. Disappearing. 34-inch waist is insane, but he's a legend.

58:04Pat McAfee:Speaker 1 is kicking off this evening as the Chargers and the Lions will play in the Hall of Fame game and we will celebrate the fact that football is all the way back. It is a perfect day here in Canton, Ohio. As it's raining, it's windy and there's a lot of Ohio folks standing in a parking lot getting drenched. celebrating football in its entirety. The first hour, we had a chance to chit-chat with three out of the four dudes that are going into the Hall of Fame this year. We did put a request in for all four dudes that are going into the Hall of Fame this year. I don't know if it was schedule, timing, or anything else.
58:45Pat McAfee:I just want to let that... That was not on us. Anybody else can talk about it. That was on the other side. Correct. And also, kind of understandable for whatever reason. It's not just me. The talks are tables here at Boston Corner and at Ty Schmidt. One half of the hammer died. Cowboys AP Tony's here college football national champion for the state Buckeyes Super Bowl champion lazy gentleman AJ Hawk is here nine year NFL event I don't want to step on that
59:23Pat McAfee:AJ Hawk is getting his name chanted by Bruce Brown, who's standing out in the rain with everybody because he did not want to be in the truck with the entire group of dipshits is his exact word. I don't think he's talking about you, Foxy, back there in the truck, but you boys are doing a great job. We appreciate you. Yes, sir. Nine year NFL vet. Absolute genius. Ladies and gentlemen, Gary Shade Butler is here. We appreciate you, D-Bunch. In about 17 minutes or so, I believe we'll be breaking some news with another incredible honor of having a high school commitment take place on our show. We don't know how this has become a thing for us, but we want to let everybody know we're pumped about it.
1:00:04Pat McAfee:Pretty cool. The guy that's going to be joining us today is 6 '3", 260 pounds, going into his senior year from Alabama. High school. And Anthony Tank Jones. And they're going to say, Tank Jones! Tank Jones! Tank Jones! Tank Jones! This guy's a monster. He's huge. And he's making this commitment here in about 17 minutes. I believe with the way he is built and the mindset that he has, and now everybody talks about him, there's a chance that he ends up in this damn Hall of Fame. There is. There's also a lot of players right now that we have an eye on around the NFL that could be destined for Canton, Ohio in their time.
1:00:41Pat McAfee:Let's talk about a rookie who is attempting to do something that has never been done before let's go down to Jacksonville Florida more specifically Duval County new coach new GM this is what they had to say the day after the draft when they traded a lot of assets to get up to number two to make their pick out of Colorado yeah you know as we sit here Travis Hunter is a Jacksonville Jaguar and really what comes to mind for me right Thinking about the sport of football and really the power of the game itself. Its capacity to ignite belief. Belief in ourselves, belief in others, belief in achieving what many may deem impossible.
1:01:25Travis Hunter, he embodies belief. He's a rare person. He's a rare player. but he's also a reminder that the boundaries of the game of football were built to be challenged. And so the decision to select him was actually a statement, a statement for how we plan to move who we are, and we want him to be nothing more than him. Because when he is, he elevates the space around him. from the football field to the city to the game of football itself. Travis Hunter is who we've been hunting up. Couldn't be more jacked to be sitting right here beside him and introduce you all to the man of the hour.
1:02:16Pat McAfee:That is how Travis Hunter was introduced to the NFL media and to the entire Jacksonville Jaguars fan base from their brand new GM who looks 12 but has a great football mind. He's what everybody has told us in Gladstone, old stoner. Then let's go to training camp where Travis Hunter was chit-chatting with Pete Prisco of CBS Sports. Bingo. Guy's been around a long time. We appreciate his commitment to football. This was his question for Travis. As we all said to ourselves, there's no way this guy's going to be able to do something that's never been done before, right? Here's Pete Prisco. How many plays do you think you could play?
1:02:51You think you could play them all? Yeah. I definitely think I could play them all. So if I didn't think I could play them all, I wouldn't be trying to do it. What makes you able to do that? Nobody's ever done that. What makes you capable of doing that? Just my mental. You've got to have the right mindset going into it. You've got to have the right knowledge. You've got to understand what you're doing when you're going out there. You've got to understand how to take care of your body, too.
1:03:11Pat McAfee:So when he says those things, D-Butch, obviously he is going to be a guy who thinks he can do it all because he's already done it all at a very high level. He is a guy who was drafted number two overall to do it all. He is a guy who is special. He's the highest-rated Madden player in the history of rookies in the NFL at 84. Just one point below the highest-rated punter in the game. And A.J. Cole is a three-time Pro Bowler at 85. Don't love that. But with Travis Hunter, what are your thoughts early out of camp from what we've seen? And how do you think this works out? What does success look like?
1:03:42I mean, I played both ways my senior year of college. We had like a 15-play script for certain games. And I thought, just like him, I could play full-time on both sides. and you realize, nah, probably not. You can't be effective on both sides full time. And people have said it's impossible. The boundaries will be pushed. I'm excited to see him attempt it. The mindset, though, when you get to the NFL, we heard Eric Allen talk about his off seasons. He was running routes. He was learning the offense. Those are the details and the levels that these pros go to. So for him to be able to compete and excel on this level on both sides of the ball will be extremely difficult.
1:04:15But he's a unicorn. We saw him do things we've never seen him do on a big-time college level. So can he do it on the pro level? We shall see. I'm excited to watch. He has the skill set. But up here, it's going to be between the ears. Can he figure it out? Can he game plan? Can he take care of his body? Can he do all those things for an 18-game regular season? Or 18-week regular season.
1:04:35Pat McAfee:Yeah, 17 games, 18 weeks, nonetheless. And you start stacking years. Now you've got preseason, offseason, playoff games. Hopefully, they're thinking down there in Jacksonville. Remember, they were in the playoffs just a couple years ago. Brand new head coach, brand new GM. Feels like a new energy. They got stadium to deal with over the next couple of years. I don't think anybody's expecting them to win a Super Bowl this year. But if you were to say, what does a successful career look like for Travis Hunter? Obviously, if he comes premier at one of those positions, that's a successful career, no matter what.
1:05:02Pat McAfee:Even if it's number two overall pick, number one overall pick, whatever it is. But if he's able to play both ways for an extended period of time in the NFL, I think everybody would be mind blown by it. What does success look like, AJ? How long do you think? Man, success for him, obviously, if he's a premier player as a corner or a receiver. but I think if he doesn't have to play every single play they can talk about oh can you play every play yeah I could like technically I could I think you can find packages here and there for him I don't know what like what is he does he identify more as a receiver as a DB do we know I don't like that's like Shohei who said he was a hitter who became a pitcher or whatever in his entirety that's two different things that everybody said you can't do you can't do you can't do he is trying to defy the odds there we said he was also a unicorn baseball people said he was a unicorn and then in his fourth or fifth start whatever it was he had a bad outing now everybody's calling for him stop wasting your time you need to go hit well that happened with Travis yes if he gets bombed on yes and he has like two touchdowns on the other side people are going to be like why are we wasting any time on the defensive side and on the flip side if he is a glove if it is Rivas Island on defensive side and he's you know the Jacksonville Jaguars on the offensive side he's scoring like maybe has eight touchdowns on a year nine touchdowns on a year which would be very good It's like, do we want to sacrifice glove on defense for the other?
1:06:17Pat McAfee:Those conversations are going to last for his entire career, just like it has with Shohei. Yeah, for sure. And I think with him, the expectation shouldn't be like, oh, because he can play both ways, this guy should be a top-five receiver and a top-five cornerback. You look at Shohei, he's either the best hitter or the second-best hitter, depending on how you feel about it, in the MLB. And he's probably like a top-25 pitcher, but he's good enough to go out there and compete on the mound as well. Obviously, he just got hurt, which kind of throws things into a ray a little bit. But for Travis Hunter, if he is a top 10 guy at either receiver or cornerback, and he's a top half guy at the other, is that good enough to dictate like, hey, this guy needs to continue to play both ways?
1:06:58Or do you just say, hey. I genuinely don't know how to handle it. Especially after that press conference. What do they need him the most, too? For the team needs, do they need a corner more? Do they need a number one receiver more? What do you need?
1:07:07Pat McAfee:Like there's more drunk. Like we are a supporter. We would like him to play both sides. And we talked about this earlier in the basement of the Hall of Fame. Sure. That's cool. The Hall of Fame. Yeah, we're sweating in the Hall of Fame.
1:07:27It's a banger.
1:07:27Pat McAfee:Yeah, it is. We're in there in the basement listening to that. I will have you know. Also listening to MGK, who will be joining us here with some breaking news, actually, about one of his songs. I believe about the college season. But we were chit-chatting there. How long does he have to play both sides to be a Hall of Famer? Just, like, consider it a Hall of Famer because we're in here. It's like if he was able to play what? A contract? Two contracts? Yep. That's what? Six, seven, eight years? If he was able to play eight years on both sides, guaranteed Hall of Famer. I mean, not even a question.
1:08:01Pat McAfee:If he was to play both sides five years and then transition, or four years and transition into one of them, I think still Hall of Fame resume type stuff. Anything he does is going to be unique. It's going to be a mold breaker. But how long is this able to last? What can the human body do, even if it's one of the most physically fit bodies that we've ever seen in Travis Hunter? Yeah, that's right. I don't think the full offense and defense is going to be, you know, for an extended period of time. Like, I know it's Sweden training camp, And, you know, when he's doing offensive drills in the morning during special teams, he's doing defensive drills.
1:08:35He's getting the most reps out of anyone basically ever. I think we just go back to what we said originally. Like, I think the idea of him having a package on one side of the field is still more likely than him playing every single staff. Which side does he major? He's going to play full time at one position. We just got this smack in our heads. I didn't know they were writing notes on it.
1:08:57Pat McAfee:From somebody in the crowd. Michigan sucks here on one side. Now, what is Michigan's record against Ohio State over the last couple years? It's pretty good. It's undefeated against Ohio State. This guy said also, need some beer money if you'd like to hit me up. That'd be great. Classic Ohio here. One side, we've got Michigan sucks. The other says, hey, don't be scared. Send me a little beer money. Love that. Love what you're doing, buddy. Good luck. I hope you get a beer, too. Five bucks if you want to send. Yeah. Five bucks. Everything here is five bucks. All you can eat. The Travis Hunter story is going to be one that is going to be talked about forever.
1:09:31Pat McAfee:If it doesn't work out, okay, at either position, not saying it's going to. Don't want that. I was kicker punter coming out. Yeah. Thought that I was going to be able to play both. Said I think I was in the senior bowl as a kicker, was drafted as a punter. Thought I could maybe at one point figure out how to do both. There was one guy that tried it in the past. He was at Atlanta. They had him kick field goals. They had him punt. and he missed like six straight field goals or something after like a great four-week start or five-week start. Then he missed a bunch and they're like, we're never doing this again because your leg cannot take it.
1:10:03Pat McAfee:You need to be a master at one thing. So if he does this, obviously historic for all positions, all sports, everything like that. But there's a chance that neither – what if one's eating away from the other and they both kind of attack each other? So many different options on how the story can go. We believe in Travis Hunter the person. Yes. But the NFL is tough, dude. And it's been guys who had the ability to play both ways. Charles Woodson, Aqib Tlaib, one of your college teammates, Chris Campbell, a guy I looked up to. These guys had skill set to be a full-time wide receiver or DB. But when you get to either college, which happens to most guys, you go to a big-time D1 school, but definitely to the NFL.
1:10:42Deion Sanders, he's the guy that I can remember most touching the ball on both sides. But Champ Bailey, another one. But, like, it'll be incredible if he does it. He has already pushed brownies and broke boundaries. so I'm not going down him. I know he's going to be successful because the Cleveland Browns passed on him. If the Cleveland Browns passed on you and trade away that pick, this guy is going to be an automatic Hall of Famer.
1:11:03Pat McAfee:I think Cleveland's like 45, 50 minutes from here. Yeah, there's a lot of scumbag Ohio inside. Not him. Not him. There's a Cowboys fan. Latrobe was so much better in this place. The Hall of Fame should have been in Latrobe. They made a huge mistake playing here. It definitely would have been pissing rain. This is awesome. Tony, the thing about that is they can't hear you because the Ohio weather is beating the shit out of these speakers because of how tough this point of time is. They heard enough. Which is why it's the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Travis Hunter's story, though, special. We all need to treat it that way.
1:11:36Pat McAfee:And there are some people that are probably sick of hearing about it or whatever because there was a lot of attention to that Colorado team. What he's doing is a very big deal in the history of sport, and we need to talk about it. Do you think at all about those guys D-Bot just mentioned? the places they went to school were all top five in the country, and he went to Colorado and they were playing Colorado State. Like, does that actually come into a thought here? Colorado State's a good program. Colorado State's a great program, yep. We know for sure Trey McBride, love that guy. Bradley Van Pelt.
1:12:04But truly, like, Gamble, like, Woodson, they're playing against the top talent in the country every week, and then you're thinking about Travis Hunter, and they go to Nebraska who wins seven games and they lose 30 to nothing. So it's just one of those. Control is great. Absolutely. And if you look at Travis as a player, he was a five-star coming out of high school. Number one recruit. Went to any program. And then he follows Coach Ryan, goes to Jackson State, then goes to Colorado. But got drafted number two for a reason. Like if you look at his skill set, him running, him breaking, his awareness, his ball skills, all of those are on an elite, like tier one level.
1:12:39I would say all time as far as a prospect goes. So I don't have any. You're saying like do you have a little thousand? My thing is like Deion let him play both ways, but all those other top schools that he was getting recruited by as the top recruit, they were only going to let him play one way. It wasn't like a, hey, you can. The reason he wanted to go play for Deion is because Deion was the only one that was like, yeah, you can play both ways.
1:13:03Pat McAfee:Deion also put a plan together for him, understood. I think Deion, there's only a couple people that can have those conversations. Exactly. And Coach Braun is one of them. And once again, we can't say this enough. Coach Braun, hell yeah, dude. Hell yeah, Coach Braun. Hell yeah, Coach Braun. All the famer, obviously. This is home. And, yeah, you talk about a unicorn forever. Major League. He didn't play every snap. For everything that is said about Coach Prime, I would like it to be known that the way he coaches, he's a hard ass. Yep. He's attention to detail, committed. And then also, like, a lot of people say he's flashy and yada, yada, yada.
1:13:34Pat McAfee:The dude just went through cancer, and nobody had a clue about it. Yeah. Like, you know what I mean? He didn't even tell his kids. You're talking about a dog through and through. And Coach Prime, we love you, man. We're happy you're good. We are very happy that you're good. Loves his players, too. I mean, that kid who just had to medically retire, and he honored his scholarship, and he'll keep him through. So people can say what they want, but the players on his team, obviously, love him and would run through a wall for him. And it's the perfect place for Travis Hunter. Yes. And if the Travis Hunter story goes how we all hope and think it's going to go, that is a huge decision that he made coming out of high school.
1:14:05Pat McAfee:Now, speaking of decisions coming out of high school, ladies and gentlemen, it is our honor to be a part of yet another commitment for a high schooler that is 6 '3", 260 pounds. Wow. Head on his shoulders, pure. These younger guys who have been dealing with this business stuff and a little bit more attention feels like they're much more mature than we would have been back in the day. We're standing at the Hall of Fame here, obviously. There's a chance that this guy is in here someday. A lot of work to do, including a great college career. Where will it be? We shall find out. Ladies and gentlemen, from St.
1:14:44Pat McAfee:Paul's Episcopal in Alabama, a man who's a five-star edge rusher and an absolute beast with a great nickname. Please make some noise for Anthony Tank Jones. Yeah, Tank! Good, Tank. How you doing? Good. Okay, I like that. We got a microphone. Where are we right now? Let's zoom in. Let's do his shot full there. Okay, who all do you have with you right now, Tank, just so we can get the names with faces here.
1:15:15This is my dad, Anthony Jones Sr. What up, man? My little brother, Tristan Jones. What up, dude? Good to see you, buddy. This is my mom, Sonique Dwight. Hey, mama.
1:15:27Pat McAfee:Good to see you. Where are you right now, Tank? Sir? Where are you right now, Tank? I'm in my school theater. Okay, so you're in the theater. Is there people there, or are you guys just taking up the stage with nobody in the crowd? I got a piece of it. That would have been a big time move if you would have done that. Tank, please tell everybody in there that we're appreciative of the time today and we're honored for this opportunity for one of their finest in the history to tell us where he's headed. Tank, I assume this whole recruiting process has been pretty awesome, but also maybe a little bit heavy.
1:15:59Pat McAfee:How has it gone for you and your family, and how much work has it gone into making this decision today? It's been a long journey, I can say. I feel like all I've been blowing up, I've just been taking it day by day, staying humble, and just keeping my head grinding and stuff like that. I've just been thankful for it. Okay, well, it is our honor to be a part of this. We have your final three that has been basically all over the Internet. Ohio State is not a part of the final three. We're live in a parking lot right now in Ohio. Tank had to say that. Alabama, Oregon, Texas A &M. Obviously, he has scholarship offers from everybody, including West Virginia, which don't love this.
1:16:41Pat McAfee:But nonetheless, Tank Jones, will you please let the world know where you will be continuing your football career? Well, first off, I'd like to thank the Lord. Without him, none of this would be happening. And I want to thank my family and all the sacrifices they've made. The long nights, staring up, long flights, all that. And I would thank the community also and my coaches and the school. Just the dedication they showed to me and the love they showed back to me. I've just been very grateful for it. For the next three to four years, I'll be continuing my academic and athletic career.
1:17:27Wait a minute.
1:17:29Pat McAfee:Wait a minute. Are we contemplating right now? the University of Oregon. Okay. Go Ducks! Go Ducks! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Congratulations to you. Congratulations to Oregon. I know your school there is in the state of Alabama. How hard of a decision was it to go to Oregon, and why did you end up choosing coach Dan Lanning in the Oregon Ducks?
1:18:07Might not be a relationship I have with them. Just the way I know they can develop me. The history of coach Lanning, coach Blue Boy, like the ages they can coach. And I just know they can get me to the next level.
1:18:18Pat McAfee:All right, well, congratulations to you, your family, your entire school there. Thank you for letting us be a part of this. And sco dogs! Sco dogs! Sco dogs! Sco dogs! Hey, congratulations, man. And hopefully someday you're here. From us and all of you, congrats. Ladies and gentlemen, Anthony Tank Jones. Anthony Tank Jones. I thought doing that at the Hall of Fame could be cool. Yeah, for sure. Completely forgot about Ohio State. Yeah, sure. And then we didn't know exactly where he was going to go. We had three different graphics for us committing to or whatever. The fact he's going to Oregon is obviously a great thing for these people here because Ohio State-Oregon about to become a great rivalry for years and years.
1:19:01Oregon's far, but it is beautiful.
1:19:03Pat McAfee:Yep. Beautiful campus, beautiful views, and obviously with Uncle Phil, the facility, the amount of money that they're pouring into ball and sports as a whole, they already have a nice facility. They're building a new facility just because we need a newer facility, even though they have one of the newest facilities in the country. It's like Oregon's going to be a player, just like Ohio State's always going to be a player. just like Texas is always going to be a player, just like Penn State is always going to be, and just like Michigan is always going to be a quarterback. They got a quarterback who's young and very good from all reports, but him going to Oregon, what does this mean to you?
1:19:48Pat McAfee:What do you think this is saying to Alabama, right? Because he's in Alabama and they were one of his final three. And what do you think this means for Oregon as a whole going forward? I mean, I'm sure Bama fans are pretty pissed off right now. A long way. But, you know, Dan Lanney, he's building a great program out there. But I just love these kids making these commitments on the show. And the odds that we're playing now, we've had, what, five or six of these guys now, four or five stars. We're playing some good odds. We may not be doing this anymore, but they may definitely be in this hall, at least one or two of them.
1:20:15But I love them getting on here with their family, all the people that made those sacrifices, saying for the next three to four years, committing to where they're going to. That was awesome.
1:20:23Pat McAfee:What was the percentage that we heard about five stars? So, yeah, I heard this on a show the other day. It used to be 60 % of five stars got drafted in the NFL or made it in the NFL in some way. Over the last few years, it has jumped up to 65%. So I don't know if the rankings are getting better or whatever, or if more NFL teams are just taking more chances on talent. But about 65 % of these five stars are now going to the NFL. Tank John's a great nickname, Con, man. Fantastic. 6 '3", 260. He's on the internet, 6 '3", 245. FaceTime with him this morning. I'm like 6 '3", 245. Jeez, what a monster.
1:20:55Pat McAfee:And he's like, no, I'm like 260 right now. Because remember, these guys are all still growing. That's the thing. Like, I get that. And I don't know how it was when you guys were growing up. Like, is this how it was for everybody? Because the Atkins kid we talked to, he's massive. There's a few other players that we, I mean, the tackle. That guy was 6 '7", 350. And he's in high school. When I played, which was kind of recently, I don't remember it being like that. Like Clowney, for instance, he was the one guy. Derrick Henry. Derrick Henry, the one guy. But now it feels like there's 25 of them on every 100 list.
1:21:32It's absurd. AJ, Ohio high school football. Oh, yeah. Kent McKinley plays right here. Legends came through here. Yeah, is Ohio high school football still very much, right? It's very, very much legit, yeah. Why? Why do you ask in that sarcastic, condescending way? I mean, I was not. Don't you guys have a game? You still have that game every year? They used to have the Big 33 game. I don't think they do it anymore. Well, I lost so many in a row that they stopped it.
1:21:59Pat McAfee:Did they have no idea? Did they? Actually, we have no idea what the record is. No idea. In that particular Big 33 matchup. I was not able to play it. And then I was at school already, you know, just getting ready to be a mountaineer. And also wasn't invited. Well, whenever you – whenever – I don't even want to get into it. 6 '3", 260. He's big. And he's going to Oregon. And they seem to be good kids, too. That's what's great. All of them. Mature beyond their years, as you say. Okay, let's talk about some NFL news that is happening. I guess Ben Johnson's a hard ass. Hell yeah. That is what they're saying.
1:22:34Pat McAfee:Ben Johnson? That's what I've heard, yeah. And I can respect and appreciate that, especially if he starts out that way. There's been basically daily reports that Ben Johnson has been holding them accountable. You miss a read or something, get off the fucking field. You jump off sides, get off the field. You don't know the route you're supposed to run, get off the field. And I guess it's being reported as like, this guy is a terrorist. This guy is the meanest man of all time. Ben Johnson's trying to change the culture in Chicago quickly. That is very evident from what I've been hearing. How do you think it goes, D-Butt?
1:23:07Pat McAfee:because obviously if it goes well, it's good. But we've seen the Matt Patricia situation. We've seen the Mangini situation in Cleveland here. Where I heard, guys, McDaniels out in Denver. This can go the wrong way. But also, it can go the right way. And I think I like that Ben Johnson is leading with this as opposed to evolving. I think you probably feel the same. You said something very big there. He's coming in starting off as a hard-ass. We've all had experience with coaches. It's one way to start off that way, and then you can get a little lighter as time goes, as you build that trust. But if you come in as a lighthearted players coach and you try to become a hard-ass junior tender, that never works.
1:23:44But he chose his place. He could have went anywhere in the league for the last two or three years and he chose to go to Chicago. He chose to go and coach Caleb Williams. So he saw something there. I think they had a good draft. I think they had a great offseason building up their offensive line. And now it's going to be about developing a quarterback. That's going to be his biggest job. And when you are the head coach and you're the play caller, you don't have to worry about leaving every year. You know, he's going to build that continuity. So I'm high on Ben Johnson, Kayla Williams. I think they'll figure it out the next couple years.
1:24:12Pat McAfee:Chicago Bears might be the new Kings of the Airs. They're not. We can do that. Hey, we got a couple weeks here. We can still do that. No, they aren't. Let's do it. Ben Johnson's coming in there with a little accountability, just like every other team. Ben Johnson's coming in there with a quarterback who's picked number one overall with generational talent. But A.J., as a Green Bay Packers legend, you scared to death that all of a sudden the Chicago Bears are about to show up in the NFC North conversation? No, I'm not scared at all, but I think it's good. It's good for the NFL. It's good for the NFC North that the Bears are good.
1:24:41I like to see a good rivalry game. The Bears-Packers matchup is unbelievable. The history goes back forever. But have you ever seen a coach say this before a practice? Like declare, hey, this is going to be our longest, our toughest practice. Let's see. Let's separate the men from the boys. Who's going to survive? Who wants to be king of the mountain? So that means first play at practice, you just got to annihilate somebody and start a full brawl with the whole team, right? Yeah. He didn't say he likes fighting.
1:25:06Pat McAfee:That's not what he said. These guys are saying they don't give a shit back here. About what? This whole topic. The guy's wearing a Dolphins hat. Yeah. He is wearing Dolphins hat. He would like to talk about Dolphins being all the way back. I think Dolphins fans are believers. They might not be as shite as we thought they were going to be. Any of these teams could be good, including the Bears' time. No, yeah. And I also appreciate that he's doing this now because it kind of just shines a light on apparently Matt Eberflus was just letting these guys do whatever the hell they wanted at all times.
1:25:33I mean, we saw how many gaffes they had on both sides of the ball. So, like, I understand it. But, again, we do this with the Bears every single year. Bears fans will say, like, hey, you beat the Packers once last year. They did. I don't know what you're mouthing at me. Okay, sounds good. But it's just, you know, this is why this part of the calendar is awesome. Yeah, I know. Because every fan base gets to do this for the next four to five weeks. It's, hey, we're going to win a Super Bowl. Everything has changed. We got a new coach. We got this player in the draft. That's why this part of the season is so awesome.
1:26:07And then when week one gets here, we'll see how much of this stuff is true. Another big question mark. Minnesota, they got a brand-new quarterback. No, they're going to the NFC Championship. Dan Orlowski. Oh, we already declared that. Yeah, Dan Orlowski said they're in the NFC Championship. Oh, Dan Wagon has started already.
1:26:21Pat McAfee:He said they're going to be better than they were last year. Last year they were playing in the last week of the season for the number one overall seed in the NFC with Sam Darner. Now, J.J. McCarthy out of Michigan. National champion. Could be a guy. Never lost Ohio State. Could be a guy. Absolutely. Could be a guy out here in the NFL. But anytime you've got a question mark at the quarterback position, you've got everything else happening around it that's great. It's obviously going to be scrutinized. But we've learned that KOC can basically make an offense for anybody. and I believe that's going to remain true.
1:26:53Pat McAfee:I don't think the Vikings are going anywhere. I don't think the Lions are going anywhere, even though who their whole team's different. Yeah. Jared Goff's there, obviously. But whenever you talk about coordinators and everything else that's kind of having to change because you have success, it's brand new. I think they're still going to be around. I think the Packers are always going to be good. How are the Packers going to be this year? Like I said, you know, it all depends on how Jordan Love does. I mean, their defense was much better last year. He's a guy, though, is he not? I believe he is.
1:27:22I think he was hurt for a lot of the early portion of the season last year and probably came back a little too early and got hurt again. But we've seen what he can do in his first full year as a starter. They win a playoff game. They beat the hell out of the Cowboys. And if they had Brandon McManus at the time instead of Durs Carlson, they probably beat the 49ers and maybe play the Lions in the NFC Championship. So we'll see. I think the Packers are always going to be in the conversation, which is what I appreciate. Are they going to make a deep run in the playoffs? I don't know. I'm hoping so.
1:27:49But, I mean, we'll find out week one what they kind of look like. AJ, are the Green Bay Packers the weak link in the NFC North? No, they're not. But getting back to what Dan said about the Vikings, he thinks if they have average quarterback play, they can win the NFC North. He said if they have average quarterback play, they will be in the NFC. That's what that tweet said? That is what the tweet said. I don't think any team's winning their division with average quarterback. Yeah. Are they? No. It lists Ryan Kelly, it lists Will Fries, and then even lists Jonathan Allen and Hargrave. Yeah, they do have a great team.
1:28:17I agree, but every great team still needs a quarterback to play. At least asinine. Above average. Average quarterback played in the NFC Championship. That doesn't compute. To be fair, I'd be 9-8 with average. Was Sam Darnold average? Of course. You're saying Dan Orlovsky's said something stupid. Guys, he's already going to have a tough weekend. We don't need to pile on.
1:28:37Pat McAfee:Remember, this is Jared Allen's Hall of Fame weekend. The slow motion. Yep. Dan is going to be shown 1 ,000 times. Not that it isn't every single day. But 1 ,000 times this weekend, a man so intimidating that other quarterbacks thought the end zones were 15 yards. Like that is going to be showing so many times. And then now you're saying it's asinine. I mean, that statement. That statement is crazy. And look, I love Dan. I love the work that he does. I know he grinds. He watches the tape. He does all these things. But we just haven't even seen J.J. McCarthy on the field. He's already said it's going to be a step up from Sam Darnold coming off a career year.
1:29:13And then to say average quarterback play, you're going to get to the NFC Championship. We just mentioned these other NFC team didn't even mention the Cowboys the Niners. We obviously Eagles are the Rams. We got teams with the man there's quarterbacks like we got like we'll see. Maybe he's right. He's not the only one.
1:29:30Pat McAfee:Kirk Hershey said to say joining us now ladies and gentlemen is the man who put out the asinine tweet. Yes. Dana Laskin.
1:29:41Pat McAfee:Dana looks like you're having a great day. Let me tell you you're getting your name tarnished out here. So the tweet you had out about average quarterback play from JJ would lead the Vikings to the NFC championship game has been absolutely cooked. A lot of the boys up here have said you're going to need a quarterback to play very well to make it to the NFC championship in the NFL. Would you like to clarify a little bit more here or defend yourself from vacation? No, I don't need to. I mean, clarify, I can't. I don't need to defend it that much. But if we had to ask everybody the top four rosters in the NFC, top to bottom, the best rosters, Minnesota is unequivocally going to be in that conversation.
1:30:25Eagles have the best roster in the NFL probably. And then you're talking Rams probably in that conversation for the two spot. And then the three spots, probably a debate between maybe Green Bay, maybe Minnesota, Chicago at some points. maybe Tampa Bay that's insane you missed a team Tampa Bay the Niners there's no way you're going to say the Niners the Lions the Lions probably but the Lions dude the Lions got big losses big big big losses roster or coordinator roster loss is not as big than coordinator Frank Ragnow Frank Ragnow is an enormous loss he's the best center in football arguably two star defensive players are coming off injuries so like let's see what they're like
1:31:15Pat McAfee:best player on the field they said coming off a big injury so
1:31:27there's no idea we're sitting at the Hall of Fame
1:31:34Minnesota's lines is scrimmage are gonna be great they're gonna be great yeah but
1:31:39Pat McAfee:a quarterback has to play like that's why the jalen hurts thing i get it but like had to make plays like have to yeah 100 i totally agree so to get to an nfc championship game like you're gonna have to make plays like you're gonna have to make plays so i don't think an average quarterback would be able to make the plays that are gonna have to be able to make okay let me let me ask you this and let's let's be completely honest about the whole situation that'd be your first time. Jalen last year. Jalen Hurts last year. In totality, was he above average, below average, or average through the body of the season?
1:32:17Above average. I want a Super Bowl. Body of the season. I'm sick of it. Got it, bitch. I want a Super Bowl. We also can't say that average quarter. This isn't the 1980s. He said with average play, Average quarterback played the Vikings will be in the NFC Championship and then listed every other team in the NFC North as potentially second-best roster of football. So it's like, what are they, just going to run roughshod through the division and then get to the— Orlovsky is yelling. I guess Orlovsky is yelling from the beach. Let me talk. That's how he gets it, though. That's what he does. What do you got, Dan?
1:32:58Dude, I asked you the body of the season. I heard. His final two games talking about that. We ruined his day.
1:33:06Pat McAfee:Enjoy the beach. This ain't that big of a deal. We'll have this conversation again. You're the best. Love you, Dan. Love you, Dano. We know what side of the conversation he's on there, don't we? We do. But that's what he does. Ty just laid it out perfectly. Okay? Because this is how he says, like, I never said that. Nope. That's not true. Because he lists the Vikings, but then he does all the other teams in the NFC North. So then when it comes around, he says, no, I thought the Lions were just as good, if not better. Let's move along. We have an Ohio legend here. And we also have some breaking news, I do believe, for the college football season.
1:33:39Pat McAfee:They have a new song of the season and a video to debut it that is absolutely filthy. And we're here at the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame game is happening tonight. We'll be kicking off football. And in just a few weeks, Texas will be traveling to Columbus to kick off the greatest college football season we've ever had. and this will scratch you right where your college football fandom itches. It's the dawn of a new college football season. College football runs through our soul. We're going to win with that. And we are ready to start this season. Here we go. Turn this thing back up. Let's go make it happen.
1:34:23How many of you really know you're alive? They pull me over doing 135. Show me the money and I'll show you the lies. Everyone's equal till it's time to divide. Let's go! You want this, you got that! You want this, you got that! Don't wait, watch him walk right past you. Run fast, run fast while you have the chance. Don't speak, let him look great. He's got it! Come on! Come on! Can you believe it? And the buzzer! Are you kidding me? A 12-team playoff. We knew this was going to be fun. You can feel the energy. College football has got this one right. Wow! It is a brand new roster. A chance to make it a special season.
1:35:13The energy is coming back. Go away, watch a walk right past you. Run fast, run fast while you have a chance. Don't speak, let them look right at you. Run back, run back while you have the chance This is what makes this sport so amazing.
1:35:39Pat McAfee:Ladies and gentlemen, the man who created that song, Ohio Legend. He'll be releasing his seventh studio album in early August. Ladies and gentlemen, MGK.
1:35:51Pat McAfee:Hey, thank you for joining us. Thanks. Well, this works. Cool. Yeah, you definitely work. You and a microphone is a good thing, so we're going to make sure that absolutely happens. I've been a fan of yours for a long, long time. We were actually going through the Worldstar shit earlier today, the freestyles from the car, everything like that. Your song with Jeezy, Hold On, Shut Up, Who Remembers My Comma. Yeah, I was in a gym probably a thousand times with that song. So watching you continue to kill it and then change genres and continue to crush, cool thing as a day one fan. Dude, thank you. I feel like, you know what's funny?
1:36:24Did you ever tweet me back in the day? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, see, I remember like 10 years ago.
1:36:31Pat McAfee:Yeah, you didn't have a lot of followers then. Yeah, then you took off to the moon. So I'm a big fan. I really respect your grind and hustle. I also was in my head, I was like, man, I wanted to do this interview with a mouth guard so bad, and I asked him to give me a mouth guard, and I'm like, since when did mouth guards look like the things that my babies have? Yeah, a little binky situation. They look like a binky. Like when I was when I played sports the one time I ever did they just I would just look like a mouth guard But I saw your baseball throw you looked athletic. Yeah, look looks are deceiving now I saw you dance to a lot of people saw you dance.
1:37:03Pat McAfee:I think you look athletic rhythm. I appreciate the change here now Let's talk about don't wait run fast be a song for college football. How's that come together? And that video was sick I hope you were proud of it. I appreciate it We can't hear you. This has been happening a little bit. It's raining. It's raining, guys. It's raining. It's got a parade. The speakers outside. Yeah, you understand. Well, okay, so this song is actually ironic because I made this song the day after I played the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl party, but they didn't win. Oh. And so we had to still play the party. and I was...
1:37:46It's got to be fun.
1:37:47Pat McAfee:Is that uncomfortable? Yeah. Oh, dude. You know who doesn't go to the after parties of the team who lost? Players. Players. Girls. Anybody. A lot of suits in there, though. Yeah. So we had to go play and we were in there for like, you know, and of course I was like the headliner of it. Of course. So like, well, not of course, but I was saying as luck would have it, It was like I had to go play like an hour set versus like Quavo Shabuzi. They went to go. They got to play like one song and did. So I was up there for like an hour and I was like, dude, when you're playing songs that, now for the past five years, I haven't played in front of a crowd that, you know, wasn't a...
1:38:30Young, didn't come to see you. That wasn't stoked. So like that was, for me, that was the... That's all toughness out there. For sure. And I was, and there was, there was about four girls and I'm playing a bunch of songs that i realized in that moment i was like man these these songs are kind of like for girls you know could have really used a song with testosterone right now and i got back to the studio the next day and i was like dude never again never again like we need something with that that we could
1:39:00Pat McAfee:have played in that why'd you end up going the way you went uh because we're watching the freestyles from the car yeah unbelievable yeah and i know every in the rap world what happened don't have to bring it up, but it did happen. Everybody says that about you. I, as a fan of yours, pissed that you left the rap game. Would like to let you know that. Felt like you were making music for me, right? Yeah. Through that entire thing. When you transition to become more of a musician in the entirety, why do you end up doing that? Do you want to showcase musical talent? Like, why is that the decision you think?
1:39:27Yeah, I think it's just adding on to. It's never leaving.
1:39:30Pat McAfee:Yeah, because there's rapping in everything that you do. For sure. I mean, I also think, like, I'm not dying tomorrow, so. Thank God. Yeah. I'll wait. I'm happy to hear that. I'll wait for a while, you know, but when I look at the artists that I love, like a Bowie or a Prince or I don't even when I think about Bone Thugs, you know, like they they they had melody and harmony and all of these things that are untraditional towards what is supposed to be expected from them, which as rappers that you just there's. I think breaking out of the box is inspiring. And I think. Hell yeah. I don't know. So what I was just listening to in the car is a rap album that I'm working on.
1:40:13Pat McAfee:Oh, wait. Okay. Really? Yeah. We got bangers? Yeah, we got bangers. I can't wait. I can't wait to hear it. We are very excited for that. I think there was a, I mean, Lost Americana, which comes out on Friday. It was originally a double album. So at this point. You're saying that my assumptions that the rap game was over for MGK were a little bit early and wrong is what you're saying. Very wrong. I was bummed out. I was bummed out. I'm happy now. D-Bud has a question for you. Yeah, where did that passion for music come from? Did a little research. You grew up kind of all over the world, speak multiple languages, but where did that passion for music come from at an early age?
1:40:57Just not having friends, I think. My, like, friends being here and my headphones. I like watch I would watch TV or watch movies and be like oh I want to be that guy Like I remember when I saw Tom Cruise and Top Gun. I was like hell yeah for sure. I'm about to be an Air Force fighter Yeah, 100 % when I saw Vegeta and Dragon Ball Z I was like for sure I'm gonna become a Super Saiyan Mm-hmm, you know when I saw DMX on top of a bunch of school buses On Rough Riders anthem or we right here. It was one of the one of those two songs I was like for sure. I'm gonna ride motorcycles and become a rapper so Yeah, I think they've all worked out, man.
1:41:34Pat McAfee:I hope that continues to happen. Well, I haven't gone Super Saiyan, and I haven't joined the Air Force, but like, still got time. Still got time. You're not dying anytime soon. AJ, fellow Ohio fuck has a question for you. Yeah, as far as your career, I mean, you've been doing it for so long, it's unbelievable. But do you have like a plan? Do you sit there and write it out or think, this is what I'm going to do? Or are you more organic? I know different musicians or artists, they approach it differently. Some people have everything, like, oh, the next five years is when certain albums are coming out.
1:41:57Or do you just kind of let it hit you and go with whatever you feel passionate about? No, I have a plan. It just sucks sticking to it because I got Pat being like, oh, man, you're not rapping. And I'm like, in my head, I'm just like, oh, dude, I have so much. I'm a wild boy.
1:42:14Pat McAfee:Come on, man. Yeah. I need you. I'm getting lazy. I hear you. I need you. I got you. It's there. It's present. It's coming. Thank you. And I'm going to run fast. Run fast. I'm going to do that. I am. I'm behind you. I'm behind you. But the playing thing. But look, when you look back on this career, it's like a roller coaster where you don't know where the drop-offs are. It's more fun that way. If you know what to expect and when, you know, it's just a little. I haven't seen any drop-off. I feel like I followed you from the beginning. No, no, no. I'm saying if I make this type of album, it's like a drop.
1:42:51You're like, oh, I wasn't expecting that.
1:42:52Pat McAfee:Oh, okay. And then, you know, you go up this way or you do an unexpected turn. And I just like being... Unpredictable? Elusive. Yeah. How's the creative process? You're writing songs all the time. Do you have time that you allot like, hey, I'm going to go into the woods? Yeah, this album I did after a four-day water fast. And that's why I was just like, okay, I believe in it. Like, this came from a pure place. I did it with my best friends, all the ones that were, like, making all those songs with me that you talked about. Like, you know, we made this in the living room. Our studio burnt down in those L.A.
1:43:24fires.
1:43:25Pat McAfee:Man. Damn. So we just set the mic up in my house in the living room and, you know, made this joint. I can't wait, and I assume it's going to be phenomenal. We can't wait to listen. I think we just saw the other day you said you drink coffee, drink water, and smoke cigarettes. That's about it, dude. Living the dream. Yeah, super handsome. Great shape, too. Always. Absolutely. You look like the mannequin, you know, can wear whatever. You are like supermodel stuff now. Thanks, man. What a run you had. I can't do the water, coffee, cigarette thing. I wish I got fat. I'm a fat ass. Which is why I'm a lot in the gym.
1:44:03Pat McAfee:Yeah, okay. See that? It's for my career, too. You don't think about that. I got you. No, no, I got you. I'll have to start being less selfish. Thank you. Jesus. Ty has a question for you. Do you have any, I don't want to say aspirations because you've done acting stuff before. Like you were awesome as Tommy Lee and Dirt. And then I remember, I mean, the Netflix movie with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It was kind of like a bit hard. But yeah, yeah. You were right at the start of it. But, like, do you cut out any time to, like, pursue any of that kind of stuff? Or is that kind of just like if someone comes to you with, like, an idea that you're kind of into, you kind of dive into it?
1:44:34Yeah, I just get no's so many times. I just, I pursue it as much as I can. But I get, I think.
1:44:44Pat McAfee:I don't believe that. So you're saying, hey, hi, I'm MGK. Would love any role in your movie that you have. They're like, hey, you know what, MGK? Why don't you get the fuck out of here? Yeah. Nobody's doing that. about that no way yeah you would want to do more you can cuss on here yeah yeah wow that's fucking awesome yeah yeah you're going to do your thing uh breaking the bolt you know we take inspiration from you brother thank you well shit um yeah all good i uh yeah i i have a lot of aspirations to be in movies it just doesn't you know hasn't panned out that way i'm on universal timing though so we'll see it's universal timing yeah like it like like it'll align the angels will put something in the works whenever they feel like we see signs and everything yeah yeah yeah i mean there's been plenty of movies that come out that i'm like i was supposed to be in that i was supposed to be in that or oh i did auditions for that like sinners i was supposed to be in that oh shit which bad guy uh no the vampire uh they had they had me set up to do the auditions just the vampire, the one that's in the house, so he's the second vampire, the one that the guy comes and he eats the family up.
1:45:52But in the audition, he says he has to say the N-word, and I just wouldn't do it.
1:45:57Pat McAfee:Yes, I think there is from our conversations. That was very good. Bring your world, Gary. Yeah, I appreciate that. That Django Unchained thing was pretty wild to watch. Yes, it was. Connor has a question for you, MGK. So when it comes to acting, do you have any sort of timeline? You don't really care. You're saying they're telling you no, but you were also in shows like their series on Netflix, things of that nature. And you also said when the universe aligns. But do you ever have some sort of schedule, some sort of like, hey, this is the thing I want to do next. This is exactly what my plan is, or is it just kind of seat of the pants?
1:46:36Which camera can I look at? This one? Yeah. Hey, dude. I'd like to be in cinema while I still look young.
1:46:45Pat McAfee:Okay. All right, that was the message of Hollywood. I would really like to be recruited into a movie while I still got some looks. Hell yeah, let's make it. We're part of an Oscar run here. Hold on. Part of an Oscar run here all of a sudden. I just feel like my luck is going to be as soon as all my hair just leaves or goes gray or whatever. Yeah, but you could be a great white trash looking. I feel like that will be the run. was as soon as I was born. This guy was born for this role. Can we talk about the tattoos? Yeah. Because I got my first tattoo. Cool. See that? Yeah. They've been asking for me to take my shirt off this entire day.
1:47:26Pat McAfee:Now's not the time. I am a sex symbol, much like you. Yeah, you're like a healthy, good-looking dude. That's really cool of you. I'm going to put that on my Twitter bio. I'm going to put that on my bio. I got this tattoo here, and I think I checked the box. I was awake. It's on a tough spot. That hurts, right? That's what everybody says. My wife's tatted, so she gives me a little bit of respect because I did this. Then I'm going to have them give me the drugs, and I'm going to wake up with a full Samoan oose sleeve. I can't do it. You tattoo people say that, I understand, but I did it. I did it here.
1:47:59Pat McAfee:When did we decide just to do the entire matte black on the upper eighth of our body? That is so much time in pain, I would assume. Yeah. And how do you feel now about it all? You know, for the first couple months, I was like, wow, you look like a cretin. Yeah. You know? And I was, for the first couple months, I had to have some friends that just could say the right thing. Because I would just call. Looks good, dude. Looks good. Yeah, I needed a couple of those. Because I was like, I would, you know, brush your teeth and you look up and you'd be like, oh, Jesus. Like, dude, like, okay, so if you were looking at me, what would you think?
1:48:38You know, I needed a couple friendly support. What are you going to do? Go get it lasered?
1:48:42Pat McAfee:Were you going to go get it lasered off? Like, I think, is that what the realization was? Hey, this is definitely forever. Dude, if you're going to get this lasered off, you might as well just die. There it is right there. You can't see the camera, but it's right here. Yeah, if you're going to get that. And it's gotten worse since then. Not worse, but it's gotten more intense since then. I think it's hilarious. And as soon as I saw it, I was like, well, he has the right body for it because you're jacked. You know, you're absolutely jacked. Am I? But basically, to me, cut. That's how you take your clothes off, dude.
1:49:15To me, I just liked redesigning the human skin.
1:49:18Pat McAfee:Go on. I liked redesigning the human skin. I thought it was cool. That's it, your human skin. Yeah. Yeah, your human skin. Everything to me, sometimes I get bored, and I think everything is an art project. So I think I was just kind of looking at my body, and I was like, this sucks. Are you on your phone much? No. You read books? Yeah. TV? Yeah, I like TV. Serieses? Yeah, I get envious because I've never booked in any of them, but yeah. But you're away from your phone a lot? Yeah. When did that start?
1:49:49I don't know. I guess, I don't know. Like, when I stopped looking at porn.
1:49:56Pat McAfee:That's fair. You stopped looking at porn? Yeah. Congratulations, man. I think that's a big deal for people. There's a lot of, like, that's a huge. Addicts. A lot of addicts come out. A lot of actually former players we've seen talk about how hard it was to stop jerking. So the phone was basically just a bopping device for you, and you said, you know what? What's bopping? You know what it is. You know what? Bopping your meat? Bopping your meat. Okay. Gotcha. Gotcha. Unless you're just watching just for cinematic purposes. No, no. Oh, man, dude. Should have changed that scene. Okay, let's talk about the Don't Wait, Run Fast.
1:50:32Pat McAfee:Is that going to be in your next studio album? And are you performing this throughout the college football season? And how much of a college football guy are you? You're from Ohio. I would assume the Ohio State Buckeyes. Yeah. We love the Buckeyes, dude. Everybody from Ohio does. Legitimately. Yeah. Cool colors. Cool logo. Yeah. Cool everything. It's just cool. And reigning national champions. Yeah. And they spend a lot of money, and they're invested, and it's good. Are you going to be doing a lot throughout the college football season? We'd love to see you. We'd love to see you. I'd love to be a part of it.
1:51:02I don't really associate me much with sports, you know, but I would love to. Wearing a baseball jersey. Look at you right now. You've got a baseball cap on. WWE.
1:51:11Pat McAfee:Yeah, WWE. Yeah, W. Oh, yeah. Yeah, come on. We got you. Look at this. The hell are you talking about? You've got a baseball cap on. He's got show tops on right now. He's got show tops on right now. You can play basketball in those if you had to. Oh, yeah, totally. Yeah, absolutely. You're a big sports guy. Yeah. What sport did you play? Sorry, you said you played sport for like a minute. Yeah. I was a tight end. Really? Yeah. Nice. We had Antonio Gates up here. I scored one football. I mean, one. That's crazy. That's crazy. Don't do that shit. Hold up. Hold up, dude. Hold up. Hold up, dude. Let's not put a microphone in front of him in any sports events.
1:51:44Pat McAfee:Jesus. I scored one touchdown. Oh, my God. I scored one football. You hit a grand slam in that football game. Dude, I'm on a 50-hour migraine. So how does that happen? Is that because you're water fasting and don't eat food, you think? I actually do think that it's catching up to me. Because I was in London and I came back for this really quick. For this? Yeah. So sorry. What else are you doing? Yeah. Thank you, but come on. What else are you doing? Nothing. I just came here. For? This. The Hall of Fame. For y 'all. This is so dumb. And you're going back to London? We should have been given a heads up that you're flying from London for this.
1:52:22Pat McAfee:Why? This is a bad decision. You remember when you looked in the mirror and said you saw the thing? Yeah. And said, boys, need a little motivation about not the biggest thing? You should get one of those from the boys today as well. I'm happy I came. Except for the fact that I just said I scored one football, which is crazy. I'm going to get torched. Well, dump it. Nobody will ever know. Nobody will even know. Who's your NFL team? Are you a Cleveland Browns fan? Oh, for sure. How do you think the Browns are going to do this year? You know, it's just one of those things that you just – I love them for what's inside.
1:52:55Pat McAfee:That's right. They try more. Yeah. New Jersey. I mean, you got the coolest player in the New Jersey. Those New jerseys are fire. You know what I mean? The New Jersey's fire. New helmet's cool. New helmet's cool. Got so many quarterbacks. Maybe that. We just needed some cool. Amazing Graham in the middle. Yeah. Cool mascot. It's cool. We're doing a collab with them, too, as well. So that'll be cool. Merch? Yeah. Are you going to go break? You've broken the guitar? A couple times. I don't think I've broken the guitar, actually. I've played guitar. I've brought them out, like, playing guitar. You've always been a good guitar player?
1:53:23No. I still am not.
1:53:24Pat McAfee:I think you are. Yeah, I think I am. I think I am enough for, like, what I like that I play whatever I feel. But, like, by technicality, I'm like, eh, come on. Yeah, you're comparing yourself to, like, Bonham Asso and, like, people at the top of it. Yeah. I think whenever you're playing, it's great. And you've always got a sweet guitar. Yeah. Always has some pizzazz. I'm here for the looks, dude. That's why we brought you from London. All right. We'll continue digitally. This has been us from the Hall of Fame. Goodbye. All right, we're still live, we're still live. Okay. We're just not on TV. So now we are currently on digital ESPN +, Disney +, TikTok Live, YouTube.
1:54:07Pat McAfee:TikTok probably really good for you, I assume, right? I think so. What do you mean you think so? You're doing all this shit. Hey. Yeah. You're doing the shit. A lot of conversation about that shit. Yeah, I know. That pissed you off? No, no, no. I thought it was good. No, I think it's cool. I think, but I just, I'm still like, I feel like I'm in an archaic form of, I guess I just, I don't really do stuff for any opinions anymore. So I just am kind of just doing stuff that I like. Well, the TikTok dance took over everything. Oh, yeah. And then obviously you had people that were pissed off about it saying.
1:54:44Yeah, so mad.
1:54:45Pat McAfee:They were so mad you were dancing on a song called Cliche. Yeah. That was a beautiful thing. That was fun to watch from outside looking in. Yeah. Because obviously you've got to understand that I'm like inside my house dying laughing over it. Of course. I'm like, dude, you guys are dumb. Made that video with your buddy. Yeah, it was awesome. Yeah, Vampire Diaries. That's a good one. We listened to every lyric of that today. Trying to listen to your story you're telling. You're a great writer, dude. Thank you. Yeah, great writer. That song is cool. It literally is about a vampire who just wants to go outside in the sun.
1:55:14And it's like said well. There's like cool parallel, you know, metaphors like the try to find the silver lining, but it'll kill me if I touch. It's cool.
1:55:23Pat McAfee:And you talk about never being able to walk in the day. You know, the grass isn't always greener. There's a lot in there. Yeah. I feel like you're very deep. I really wish I could know whatever they're making those like moaning noises over. I wish I could always figure. Beach ball. Yeah, beach ball getting popped. Beach ball. Bopping the beach ball. Yeah, there's the Venmos. People are writing their Venmos on the beach ball, hitting it on the screen. Yeah, they were headhunting us a little bit earlier. That's funny. It's been a fun time. You know, we're back in Ohio. This is the way Ohio is. And also, not only beach balls do we have, we have a mascot, too.
1:55:52Pat McAfee:MGK, I don't know if you know this, the Hall of Fame has a mascot. And we had an opportunity to speak to Mascot's handler. Yeah. Yeah. Is that the proper term? Yeah, he's lackey. He had a lot of energy. This guy was jacked up about the mascot. Yep. I believe the mascot's me. This is the goat. This is Goldie. The goat. This is Goldie the goat. Goldie the goat. Your thoughts on Goldie, MGK, just early initial thoughts. You, Goldie! Initial thoughts? Yeah, initial thoughts. Good fit, not a bad fit. Hey, how you doing? Gotta see you, Goldie. Holy shit, you're here! We're here! It takes a while. I better not talk.
1:56:29Goldie, do you talk or no? I hope not. No, but I shoot. Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no, MGK. Guns are working. Oh, no, we got a new story. Oh, no! Oh! Oh! That was pretty good. Obviously just want to pants goldie so so bad the opportunity is right there
1:56:49Pat McAfee:Normally mascot uniforms don't have the actual shorts on top oh thank you
1:57:01nice toss oh oh no there you go right there aim it low pat oh i gotta pump it pump it pump it keep going keep
1:57:17Pat McAfee:going pumping it up you got t-shirt guns at your show no maybe That's the first time we've ever had one too. It's great television. I'm loving your aim. It looks like it's really going to hurt somebody, so let's keep going the way you were just doing it. Hey, lower it. I'm wrong. Hey, I'm bopping it right now. That's what I'm saying. I think you're jittery. If he would have still had his phone, I would have had him tighten this thing up a little bit.
1:57:45Pat McAfee:That's legit. That's a great catch. That's nice. Okay, I... Yeah. Pump that sucker off! Yeah, you got to pump that. I'm looking for the next wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns really quick. Hey! Found him. That was a great shot. He had no way. That was a good throw. Turned that thing sideways, did the kill shot. Yeah, I saw you fucking hang. Yeah. Okay, yeah, it's on you, Goldie! All right, Goldie! All right, Goldie! All right, Goldie! Jeez. Hey, have some muzzle control. Goldie, some muzzle discipline. I'm a little bit worried about the gun safety here. Muzzle discipline. All right, we appreciate you, Goldie.
1:58:21Pat McAfee:Have a great weekend. You go on now go
1:58:32Pat McAfee:What's next for you MGK we got album on Friday Albums Friday Thursday midnight. Is that how that works? Friday morning? It's cool It happens right like during MGK day. So we do like the mayor mates The weekend of August 13th every year is MGK day. So we throw free concerts Is that ESD Fest? It's kind of like the new version of what that was. Oh, that's sweet. I remember watching the early days of the festival. Those were fire. Yeah, they were outrageous. You're still doing that MGK days. Yeah. It's a music festival that happens back. We do it for free this time, though. So we just give back and let everybody come through.
1:59:08Pat McAfee:Do you remember these days? When was the last time you saw this video? Put this photo up that's in my little screen here. That's you in that car. We went through those earlier today. You took over Worldstar for like, I don't know, it felt like eight, nine months. See, what's crazy about that, my boy had just got out of jail, and I picked him up on the side of the road. I saw him walking on the side of the road, and he had just got out of jail, and I was like, oh, hop in here. That's literally how it all started? Yeah. I think that we invented vlogs. Just go ahead and put that on the ticker. You invented vlogs?
1:59:39Yeah, like me, Soulja Boy, Wiz. Who did it first? I think maybe Soulja and then me and then Wiz. I think we were the first that pioneered, like, uploading daily versions of our lives or, like, what was happening, you know, in our weeks and stuff like that. Like, I had my daughter, I had that video. I was just looking at that the other day where it's like, what's up, guys? I'm about to have my daughter. It's crazy. It's awesome. And then now your daughter. It's 2008, 2009.
2:00:09Pat McAfee:Yeah, now your daughter, you're FaceTiming her that you're on the Spotify hot new playlist or whatever. And it's like, it's cool to watch it. You've been very public for a long time. And you've had like 10 different lives. For sure. And we've learned about all of them. Yeah. That has to be tough as a human. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, dude, I feel deflated sometimes. But I'm also just like, dude, I'm living in a place of like, I feel very free because I stop caring about opinions anymore. You know what I mean? You're a success, brother. from Cleveland, Ohio. There it is. Shot doctor. Boom. If he didn't quit in one day at football, he could have been in here with that.
2:00:48Remember when I scored one football? Yep. Yeah, I did. What a game, man. This guy hit for the cycle in his first ever football game.
2:00:56Pat McAfee:That's right. Got a hole-in-one in the fourth quarter. So fired. Unbelievable. You remember that, right? Rolled a turkey right before half. With my cricket bat. Bingo. Slam dunk. Football legend. Straight up. Icon. Yep. MGK, we appreciate it. You know what would be so awesome? As if on the last day of this show, whenever that could be, 20 years from now, he just lifted up his hat and his hair came with it. There's a chance. How do you know that wouldn't happen right now? That's what he's saying, I think. I think he's saying that right now we got a Brent Michaels situation. Make him wait. Make a way.
2:01:37Pat McAfee:Make a way. This isn't the last day of the show. But boy, oh boy, would that make me so happy to just one day. There's a chance. Hey, you're on. Tom's gone. You go, guys, you set that headphone down. You go. And it's just. That's the final shot. And now my watch has ended. This guy is bowed all along. Or has the work like just a very, very, like just a scraggly comb over. One or two. Tommy Beckles. Or you have the Coolio. That'd be sweet That would be sweet Those were good days back in the day TRL had a run there Coolio was a part of that Yep And I was gonna ask you about Worldstarhiphop.com being like Such a huge part of your career Yeah But you gotta go do sports there It's gonna be very similar To what you just did here Yeah same thing It's basically the same You can say fuck on there too Yeah and shit Drop it Well fucking shit dude I'll go see what they got popping man Ladies and gentlemen MGK We appreciate you Thanks for hanging man You're the best
2:02:36How'd he know I was bald?
2:02:38Pat McAfee:Hey, dude, have some food. Let's get rid of those migraines. Cheap meal. Let's have some Italian little chicken parm.
2:02:51Pat McAfee:Thank you. Thank you. All right. He said bangers are on the way. Oh, yeah. Appreciate it, man. All right, bro. Hey, see you later, big man. That's protecting him. You are huge. 2:04:29Pat McAfee:I think to wrap up, we should go around the table and see who's going to win tonight's big game. Tonight will be talked about for at least 25 minutes. Tonight's game is going to be an epic battle that we will remember for at least a day and a half. Tonight we kick off the NFL season in beautiful fashion in Canton, Ohio. It is Lions versus Chargers. It is Kyle Allen versus Trey Lance. It is Hendon Hooker making an appearance versus DJU. There's going to be names that we know from college football fame. There's going to be helmets that we know from NFL lore. And we'll officially say we're in football season tonight.
2:05:17Pat McAfee:Everybody playing in this game tonight had to report to training camp earlier. I will mind you. They don't necessarily love that they have to play in the Hall of Fame game, but they understand the honor it is to play and kick off what this weekend is about to be here in Canton, Ohio. A celebration of those who laid the grounds for the world that we live in now. The greats are honored here, celebrated here, and live here forever. And that's why the Hall of Fame game is so damn important. It's not just about what's happening on the field. It's the aura of the city in which the game is taking place.
2:05:50Pat McAfee:This is football through and through. This is an awesome time, and we've been very lucky to be here. Now, who wins Lions Chargers at Boston Conner this evening on NBC? I'll take the Lions. I'll take the over. Pat, I think it's pretty simple here. I don't think anybody's really playing. Three straight overs. What were you going to say? Three straight overs. Okay, three straight overs in Hall of Fame games. Yes. Okay, so maybe towards the end of it, there's a little bit of chaos on the defensive side. Okay. We got missed assignments. We're running a ball maybe, not making tackles. We're scoring a bunch of points.
2:06:20Pat McAfee:Three straight overs. Some guys playing, too. Probably three quarters tonight by the fourth. They're going to be pretty tired because there's no backups going in after. Ty Schmidt, do you agree with what Conman said? I like the Lions. I like a big game out of Hendon Hooker and maybe igniting a little bit of a quarterback controversy in Detroit. With Jared Goff. Okay. Maybe. There's a chance. You never know. They chant Jared Goff. Foxy, did you hear what Ty was just trying to do to Detroit there? I know what Ty's doing, okay? We actually have a quarterback battle for the backup quarterback, so I would love to see Hennon play great so he can confirm that QB2 spot.
2:06:55Pat McAfee:Zito, what do your notes say on how tonight's going to go? Have you been keeping track? Yeah, I would take a lot of notes with this other David Baker pencil. I think Chargers all the way. Okay, you like Chargers. I respect that. Let's go to one half of the hammer. Cowboys AP tone. I've been struggling with this one. I like the Lions quarterbacks better, but I think the Chargers have a lot more bodies. Lions still dealing with a lot of injuries, and Harbaugh's the better preseason coach. I'm going to go with the Chargers in this one. Okay, you've got the Chargers, Lions, Lions, Chargers, Super Bowl champion, Green Bay Packer legend, Ohio guy.
2:07:30Pat McAfee:A.J. Hawk, who do you like? How do you like it? I'll take the Lions 28-21 on this one. 28-21. What's over under? 33-and-a-half. 33-and-a-half. I like it. A.J. didn't even know what the over-under was. Way over. Way over. Going to run with it. D. Butch, your pick for tonight's Hall of Fame game kicking off the NFL season. I'm going to be honest. I don't care. I don't care. What? Neither team. We win. We win. We win because we get some football. You don't care. One of your teams. No. What I care about is the legends that are going into the hole. Oh, okay. I care about Sterling Sharp. I care about Jared Allen.
2:08:04I care about Eric Allen. What? And then I care about – you're not going to say it? You're not going to say the last guy? Sterling Sharp? You don't know the last guy. I said Sterling Sharp. You're talking to Antonio Gates. I'll be honest with you. I can't hear a fucking thing. That's what I was telling you. They were telling me they couldn't hear anything.
2:08:20Pat McAfee:I'm like, brother. And Antonio Gates. Antonio Gates, the legends that have been in Shrine Knight. That's what I care about. Don't care about the outcome of the game. Like I said, don't listen, Tony. Don't bet on this game, guys. Do not bet on this game. Just watch it and enjoy it. If you do bet on the game. There is a number to call on that fine print in any sportsbook app you use. But have fun tonight. We got some NFL football. I think what D-Bot's just saying is very accurate of how everybody feels watching the Hall of Fame game, even the Lions and the Chargers fans. With that being said, there is certainly going to be an overwhelming amount of people that watch this game.
2:08:52Jim Harbaugh told the boys, no big deal.
2:08:56Pat McAfee:Obviously, we're honoring the greats of the past. Antonio Gates is going in representing our team, the Chargers. The Hall of Fame game will outrate the World Series and the NBA Finals. So no pressure. You're playing for your life. You're playing for your career, and also more people will watch you in this game than any other sport and also maybe any other game you've ever played. That's just because all we care about is football happening. Yes. And whenever you talk about honoring the Hall of Famers, it's like the amount of interviews and highlights that are going to roll tonight from football's past, it's going to be a beautiful thing.
2:09:24Pat McAfee:But the game does suck. Certainly. Maybe. It's not really a game. Like the buildup. It's like I'm watching an XFL game. I'm sorry. They keep it score. I agree. I agree with that, which is why I watch. There's a guy that has a Michigan Panthers flag. Saw that. Right over here. The only one ever sold. Rest in peace. No, new investors just came in. He's the one, Tony. New investors came into the league. And I immediately thought to myself, that's right. It is the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It's not the NFL Hall of Fame. Good point. Could you imagine if a Michigan Panther made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame?
2:09:58Pat McAfee:Jake Bates. Yeah, they're both Cardale Jones. Yeah, but he's in the NFL now. Oh, that's a good point. I'm saying if XFL only career. That'd be awesome. Into the pro football. There's a chance it could happen. There's a chance it could happen. Yeah, that's an XFL team. Got it. Or UFL now. You pig. I didn't know about UFL. I don't know which league they came from, actually. Tonight is not just about the football in the field is what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah. It's about the whole entire thing. Yes. And what it symbolizes is the fact that football's back, and there's no better place to be than Canton, Ohio, in this glorious day.
2:10:30Pat McAfee:Easy pop. Easy pop. Everybody back in the truck. Great work, boys. Great work back here. Great work back there. Living a nice life back there. Yeah, I mean, you should feel my fucking shirt. It was sideways over here. It was incredible. To the people that are saying kind things right now, we appreciate you guys hanging out with us. To the production crew that was able to set this up in such limited quick time with all the elements, we appreciate the hell out of you guys. Great work. Even though we couldn't hear some things, it's water, it's technology, and we're live as hell. And, hell yeah, thank you to Almost.
2:11:07Pat McAfee:I don't know what this is. What do we got? Okay, what's going on here, boss? Almost having ice cream. Almost having ice cream? Yeah, you guys have been advertising for us all day, so we thought we would thank you and give you some ice cream. Okay, we appreciate that. So, are you from West Virginia? No, we're from Canton, Ohio. Canton, Ohio? Yeah. Hell yeah, we had Mary Ann's Donuts earlier today. So good. Mary Ann's Donuts are so good. This is local ice cream here now. How long have you guys been creamery or ice cream place? 17 years we've been making ice cream. 17 years you've been making ice cream.
2:11:37Pat McAfee:Yes, sir. This is the chocolate peanut butter cup. Yes, sir. This is your highest seller. What's your biggest seller? The butter pecan is our number one seller, and we just won a gold medal in it in the LA Dairy Competition. You got a little bit of a cup down there? You all? I want a gold medal place. And the coffee caramel crunch is a gold medal winner as well. Oh, the CCC. OK, I'm sorry. Can you tell me again how long you guys been doing this? 17 years. Nice. Congratulations to you. Are you from Canton originally? Yes, sir. How do you get into the ice cream business? You just start one and hope for the best.
2:12:09Pat McAfee:You just liked ice cream and said, you know what? I want to make my own ice cream. Yes, sir. What's your favorite? You bought a pecan? My favorite, chocolate. I'm a simple person, but I would do chocolate. Yep, but chocolate peanut butter cup has the same ice cream. All right, I love that. What's your name again? Jared. Jared, we appreciate the hell out of you. Thank you for the ice cream. Thank you for the hospitality and Yeah Well, I remember really good. Yeah Top milk Thank you guys. Thank you. Yes. Good guys are here. I was looking to give it to thank you
2:12:49The color but oh
2:12:55Pat McAfee:That's a gold medal All right. Um, on those heavens. Hey, my new spoon. West Virginia. Oh, God. The ridge mountain. Shandler River. Life is older. Older than the dream. Younger than the mountain. Rolling like the breeze. Conjured old. Hey. Hey. I belong to the place. I belong to the place. My mama take me home. Country roads. Now that's almost heaven. Okay? So I don't love the name. Okay, got you. Don't love the name. But I do love this ice cream. It's delightful. This is very good. You're going to hear a lot of that. I thought about if game day was to go to pick West Virginia, which is week three.
2:13:58Pat McAfee:I think both teams need to do their shit the first couple weeks so we can make that happen. I think that'll be an incredible scene. Obviously, we'll showcase a rivalry that hasn't been showcased in a while and deservedly needs a spotlight and attention. Two football places taking each other on in a big, big way. Luke Combs actually came out. I think he was up at Barstow, Chicago, and he was asked, hey, what rivalry doesn't get talked about enough? And he said the Backyard Brawl, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, because I think he's been to both games in Morgantown and in Pittsburgh for that. So if we're able to get to that, that would be great.
2:14:29Pat McAfee:And I thought about it last night. I was sort of like, there's a good chance we get to that game, especially if you look at the schedule before then. And then I thought, how are they going to handle the eat shit pit chance? Like the ESPN. Yeah. I'm very excited. Let it fly. Because that'll be the entire. It's 2025. Let it fly. I think so too. But there will be some suit back there. I think I can actually see. It's not like things are getting canceled anymore. I can see that guy's face is going to do it. Jerry Swole. Huh? Jerry Swole. Oh, yeah. Well, and if you put jeans on. Well, if you're natural and proud of it, I guess it can certainly be taken away.
2:15:06Pat McAfee:Lay off, Sidney Sweeney. What happened? I'm fucking sick of it. Lay off. All right? I agree. Jesus. It was on ABC. I know. It was on Good Morning America. That's crazy to think about. Now, with that being said, no cars crashed? No, I thought. No lightning hit the set. Gunshot. Nope. We kicked off Hall of Fame week in proper fashion, and we ended it with almost having ice cream. Yeah, very decadent. It's very good ice cream. If you're in Canton, have some ice cream. Come to Hall of Fame. Enjoy these people. Enjoy life. Football's back. Be a friend. Tell a friend something nice. It might change your life.
2:15:43Pat McAfee:We're in this thing together. We'll see you guys in a while. See you guys in a while. It's going to be one. See you around. See you around. Love you guys. We do love you. We'll see you in a while. And yes, we understand that we're taking up all the days that we have. Big football season coming. It's starting tonight. It's supposed to take those days. You're the greatest people on earth for allowing us to do this for a living. We can't thank you enough. Team on me. Team on three. One, two, three. Team. Goodbye.
