In short
NFL training camp “camping” tour across multiple teams, focusing on major offseason-to-camp storylines: Vita Vea requesting a trade from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, contract/holdout dynamics, early training-camp injuries/physicals, and how teams are setting expectations heading toward the Super Bowl.
Guests (backgrounds)
- Rick Stroud: Tampa Bay Times Bucs beat reporter; host of Sports Day Tampa Bay; co-wrote Players Coach with Tom Moore; long-time Bucs coverage.
- Nate Taylor: ESPN Chiefs beat reporter/writer.
- Mark Kaboly: Steelers reporter for The Pat McAfee Show; writes on X.
Key claims / notable examples
- Vita Vea (Bucs DT, 31) requested a trade; Stroud says it surprised people and that his production is underpaid relative to top-10 DT money (roughly $25M+ per year), and that teammates/locker-room culture could be affected.
- Baker Mayfield contract talks reportedly stalled; negotiations halted for the season; Stroud expects Baker to play out his final year.
- Rick also frames Todd Bowles as “on the hot seat” after defensive struggles (collapse after strong starts) and multiple defensive coaching changes.
- Chiefs: Nate says Patrick Mahomes looks good in early camp/recovery, practiced then took a veteran rest day; focus is timing/chemistry and improving the deep ball; also expects Kenneth Walker to change the run/pass balance and help play-action.
- Steelers: Kaboly says Mike McCarthy’s arrival has changed practice/approach; Aaron Rodgers is said to be in “last year” mode and potentially ready to lead a new era; TJ Watt is expected to be moved around more under new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

Football! It's happening in front of our faces and the boys weren't certainly all on the same beat but what we will say is we are going to feel the beat today as we're going to go camping. We're going to stop by training camps from one side of this country to the other as all 32 teams have reported to their respective training camps. All 32 teams now are on the road to the Lombardi in Los Angeles, California on ESPN February 14th. Who is going to get to the Super Bowl?
0:43Pat McAfee:Who is going to walk away from this particular season happy as the other 31 teams are going to be bummed out? Now there's going to be a lot of grit. There's going to be a lot of grind. There's going to be a lot of sandpaper in these training camps. There's going to be a lot of stories that aren't really stories, but we're going to make stories because there are no other stories. There's going to be a lot of injuries popping up. There's going to be a lot of holdouts taking place. There's going to be contract disputes, and there's going to be people requesting trades. Yes, there is. What? Big hands of moose.
1:13Pat McAfee:What? Big legend. Big stud. Big Super Bowl champion for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Vita Vea has requested a trade. Wow. Away from the Bucs. He and Baker Mayfield obviously had contract conversations going into training camp. Who was going to get paid? How were they going to be able to handle it all? Who was going to get the money? And Vita Vea said, I'm done with it. Vita Vea said, get me out of here. Crazy. Are Los Angeles Rams going to make a play for Vita Vea to add to that defensive lineman filled with Avengers and Marvel characters? Vita Vea would certainly be another one. This dude was a kick returner in high school.
1:44Pat McAfee:Yeah. This dude was a kick returner and a running back in high school. Obviously, he played defense as well. Go ahead and give it to Vita Vea. He is 6 '1", 345 pounds, and runs a 4-5-40 in high school. We like to call that unstoppable. Vita Veya is an absolute monster, a beast, a person that is beloved. But obviously, we believe he's somebody that could come to our team and make our team better. Watch coming to Colts. DeForest Buckner's cleared. Yeah. He's been out any time. He doesn't play for the Indianapolis Colts. We lose. DeForest Buckner back. Leatu Latu is obviously back. We bring in Vita Veya.
2:16Pat McAfee:all of a sudden we're starting to sing in championship dances and jingles. Every team's thinking that. What would the trade actually be for? He's 31 years old. A lot of people are going to hold that over his head. Obviously, a contract has to take place. So who will be able to match whatever Tampa Bay is looking for? We'll visit with Rick Stroud in about five minutes or so as we're going to go camping around the NFL to get a little closer to the action. The toxic table's here at Boston. That's a compliment. Boston Connor's not here, obviously. No. We love con men. We love that con man found love with Natalie.
2:47Pat McAfee:We do appreciate that he's celebrating his love currently, but sitting in his spot at the toxic table, AP Town looking good over there.
2:52Darius Butler:Thank you. I appreciate that. The lighting over here is very, very nice. I sat down. I felt like Samuel L. Jackson when he sat down at Dennis Nedry's desk in Jurassic Park, but other than that, it's been pretty good.
3:01Pat McAfee:I'm pretty pumped for you to be able to pull that out, whip that out. We do know you're a big Jurassic Park fan. Just want to let people know that you still are. Rest in pieces, Sam. Rest in pieces, I think. I do believe. Ed Ty Schmidt, Green Bay Packers sweatshirt. Obviously, we'll be visiting with the Packers, Schneidman, as well as we go camping. But Vitavia on the move. Obviously, Puka Nakua is showing up. Contract disputes still taking place. Some injuries are going to pop up here because there's physicals taking place. It's a great time for an NFL fan right now. Everybody's 0-0. Everybody's undefeated.
3:30Pat McAfee:Everybody's team potentially going to go on a run. But all eyes are on the Los Angeles Rams throughout the entirety of it.
3:35Darius Butler:Yeah, but like you mentioned, you're saying, hey, Vitavia, he'd look great in an Indianapolis Colts uniform. I mean, it was almost exactly a year ago today that the Packers traded for Micah Parsons. And they don't do that kind of stuff, ever. So if you're one of these other teams that's sitting out there and you hear that Vita V is available, don't lose faith. There's a chance. There is a chance. There's a prayer. There's a hope. He could get traded to your favorite team. It happened to me last year, and boy, what a year it was.
4:01Pat McAfee:Micah Parsons coming to the Green Bay Packers changes everything for the Green Bay Packers. Becomes potential defensive MVP. Gets hurt. Then he goes in a shitter.
4:07Darius Butler:Yeah, exactly.
4:08Pat McAfee:Yeah, that's kind of the story of the game. And that's why whenever these early training camp injuries come around, you can't help but go, damn, it's hard to hear that. You kind of get off track before you even get started on this road to Los Angeles. Nine-year NFL vet, Darius J. Butler. Yes, sir. I see you take the Pittsburgh Steeler helmet off the table there and you're sitting there and move the UConn Husky one on there. We obviously appreciate the state of Connecticut a lot. Might be visiting there very, very soon, of course. Yeah, to get back up in there. I heard it's good whenever the weather is not negative 20, you know.
4:37Pat McAfee:Every time we've been there over the last couple months. Beautiful. Pretty nice. It's been fantastic. Trying to find people to love ball up here. It's an incredible thing. New England summers, baby. They're all over. Football, basketball, cross, side. Any type of ball. Rowing. Yeah, no ball there, but they're certainly getting into a training camp, though. Whenever you hear about all 32 teams being in camp, what does your mind immediately go to? Can I tell you what I do every single year? I found myself getting more active here. You know, wake up in the morning, a little bit more committed to the workout.
5:05Pat McAfee:I think our bodies are just kind of like trained like, hey, it's about time to not be a fat ass anymore. It's about time to start getting active. For you, D-Butt, what are your thoughts as we launch NFL training camps into the Sunday? I mean, you talked about it earlier when we came in with our football. You know, we've been saying sports for a long time, covering other sports, talking other sports, which are important, which we love. But football is our bread and butter. This is what we look to, you know, year-round. We can't wait for this time of year. Now all 32 teams are back. And just like us being offbeat, a lot of these teams will be offbeat.
5:34When you build that foundation of a team, regardless of how many starters or coaches or people you have coming back, it's a brand new team every time you show up to training camp every year. So I'm excited for what's to come. It's a lot of surprises every year, year in and out, not only in training camp, but as the season plays out. But I can't wait to see how things get sorted out. We got Vita Vea. You mentioned it. That's the biggest name right now who asks for a trade. Honestly, I hope everything gets worked out at Tampa. but we'll find out more from Rick. But I feel like he should be a one-helmet guy.
6:05He's been a legend. I'm excited to see how that works out and the rest of these contract disputes around the league.
6:10Pat McAfee:Anytime you request a trade publicly, you could be potentially utilizing a little bit of leverage, you know, because all of a sudden Tampa Bay finds out how many people are interested. You can kind of also get a sense of what the market is on what he should be paid, who's willing to pay, how many people are potentially going to step up and do that for 31-year-old Vita Veya. Tampa Bay can learn that as well, you know. So this is a public leverage position by Vita Veya, which we respect. We got a lot of teams' fan bases excited. I think everybody also understands this ain't a first or second rounder.
6:37Pat McAfee:You know, I think a lot of teams think like, hey, it feels like we could get Vita Veya. Now the deal that you're going to have to negotiate with Vita Veya is certainly the big conversation piece that's looming, which is why this is taking place. But if Vita Veya ends up on one of these teams, we're immediately going to think, oh, they've done it. They've won the Super Bowl. If he goes to the Los Angeles Rams and we got Aaron Donald and a Vita Veya in the middle of that D line.
6:58Darius Butler:Commissioner should veto that if that were somehow to happen. I'm talking Chris Paul to the Lakers. Not doing it.
7:05Pat McAfee:Think about Matthew Stafford, current reigning MVP, is under center. And then in the backfield, do you have Aaron Donald leading for Vita Vea? That'd be cool. And then Miles Garrett. Do you have him back and just have the full – sorry. First sergeant? Hoorah. Sorry about that. Okay, sorry about that. Break some change there. But if you have Miles Garrett, Aaron Donald, Vita Vea –
7:28Darius Butler:running the wishbone.
7:29Pat McAfee:Matthew Stafford right here. The Heisman package, basically. You know, the... What was it called? The Tush Push. Are we still calling it that? It's still around.
7:40Darius Butler:It is still around. He was the one guy that could stop it. Wasn't as successful.
7:43Pat McAfee:Without Jason Kelsey. But Josh Allen figured out a way because they're doing the lead. I mean, you get all these massive behemoths in one place. You assume they're going to be able to pick up a yard.
7:52Darius Butler:You would think so.
7:55Pat McAfee:Anywhere but the Rams, I think we're all thinking of Vita Vea. I agree. Now, granted, the expectation on the Rams pre-Vita Veo or potential with Vita Veo is that they've got to win the Super Bowl. Listen to how we're speaking around. We're talking like they aren't humans. We're talking like they're an actual video game where they're going to show up, and they might because they've got that trailer, that immortal thing. Exactly. That they plug into. Like Jacob Sully getting into Avatar. They hop in there. Matthew Stafford comes back with the perfect back, wins an MVP for the first time ever. So they're all going to be plugged in, obviously.
8:22Pat McAfee:So we assume they're going to be healthy. But here's what Sean McVay thinks about everybody's outside expectations on the team that he and Lesney to put together thus far. I think you acknowledge it, but you also talk about that that doesn't do anything. Let's be inside out. I think what's great is that people care about this game. You guys have jobs to do, and we respect that. But I respectfully say that your guys' opinions doesn't mean shit to us. I respectfully say this. Okay, he's at a Community America. I respectfully say this. You guys are paid to have opinions, and we like how much you guys give opinions and how much people like your opinions.
8:54For us, no offense.
8:58Pat McAfee:I just want to let you know this is no offense. No offense is allowed to be taken here when I say this. None of you matter at all. Nothing you have ever said matters. That's the right messaging from McVay. But once again, such a young head coach has such a great leadership style, like him talking about Puka Nakua this entire offseason, and obviously Miles Garrett, and then his relationship with Aaron Donald, where he's like, first, Aaron Donald is an incredible son. He's an incredible this. It's like he has it all. When everybody was trying to find the next McVay, I think they were trying to kind of dismiss everything that McVay is as a leader, as a – I think he's a vibes guy.
9:33Pat McAfee:I think every day he's the same. And obviously he's an absolute wizard whenever it comes to offensive play calling. So I think he's a special talent. We're lucky to have him as a head coach even if he is 27 years old still. Yeah, and the expectations obviously are sky high as they should be. and a lot of people are comparing or talking about the times, you know, that Eagles when they kind of put together that quote-unquote dream team. But this is different. You got a running MVP. You got Stafford who's been one of the best throwers of the ball since he stepped foot in the National Football League.
10:01And the same with Myles Garrett. He's a generational pass rusher. So those are the kind of foundational pieces of this team. So, yeah, I see the expectations. They are what they are and they should be. And I like how Sean McVay is speaking because we know how, you know, the head coach has always got to knock you down a little bit, especially heading to training camp.
10:16Pat McAfee:And remember, anytime the coach is speaking publicly, he's also talking to the locker room. Absolutely. That is a conversation to the locker room. Hey, we do not care what these people say. And then the players go, okay. And we're allowed to say that we don't give a shit about your opinions. And also, this is a message that he is sending to all of us as we go in here. We got to earn it. They know they got to earn it. But anytime you're going all in, which they've done before, the expectations are the one, especially in Los Angeles, especially in their own stadium. Yep. I mean, so they understand it.
10:40Pat McAfee:And they got guys that have done it. Now, Vita Veya heading to the Rams would be absurd. But this is kind of what happens. Remember, Patriots would always get somebody. Chiefs started getting somebody. You know, now are the Rams going to become that ring-chasing, big go-all-in team forever? Potentially, especially if they've got something to sell. What is DraftKings and the odds saying about where he's potentially headed?
10:57Darius Butler:So they haven't put out odds yet, but we were talking about it this morning. Let's say if you're the Cardinals, the Jets, the Raiders, teams that are currently in a rebuild, I don't expect to get Vito. You and I were talking about it. Him being 31 years old, him looking for a new contract, these are teams that are ready right now to win the Super Bowl. So, like, we talked about the Rams, yes, Seahawks, Niners, like that whole division I could see. The Patriots I could definitely see do it. And, like, the Bengals before they got Sexy Dexy, that would be a team that would fit this. Ravens even. Teams that are ready to win right now is who you would expect to go out and try to get Vita Veya.
11:28Pat McAfee:Ted Wynn reports that from a source he wants to go to a California team. Chargers would make sense too. He wants to go to a California team. Now, I think Jim Harbaugh would love Vita Veya. Oh, yeah. I mean, Jim Harbaugh talking about Vita Veya would be sweet. McDaniels on the offensive side using Vita Veya would also be sweet. So maybe it's the Chargers. Maybe it's the Rams. Maybe it's the Niners.
11:49Darius Butler:They could use DT help.
11:51Pat McAfee:Maybe it's the Niners, right? Anytime they have injury across the D-line, the whole team looks different. It's like that is kind of how they've been knocked down injuries in abundance, which is why they're looking into that electro super-duper power point. They're saying it already started again.
12:07Darius Butler:A couple other guys are already out.
12:08Pat McAfee:Yeah, it looked like there was a long list of people already. But, hey, remember, G-days are happening here in training camp. They got a veteran team and everything, so you never know who's just getting rest, who needs it, who doesn't need it, who needs a ramp up, who's actually injured. There's a lot of gamesmanship taking place. You know, we don't know enough, though, do we? No. I've been reading that all over the internet. My boots on the ground. Well, that's kind of the problem, right? It's hard because we're in Indianapolis, Indiana. Lucky to be here. Thankful to be here. But we can't know everything happening everywhere.

13:16Pat McAfee:Hold on. We're already wasted. We don't have enough time. Ladies and gentlemen, Bucs, beat reporter for the Tampa Bay Times, host of the Sports Day Tampa Bay podcast, co-wrote Players Coach with Tom Moore, obviously a living legend, and a guy who's been covering the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for 100 years. Ladies and gentlemen, Rick Stroud.
13:33Darius Butler:Yeah, Rick.
13:34Pat McAfee:Stroud, good jawline. You look incredible heading into training camp. It feels like Vita Veya requesting a trade is huge news around the rest of the NFL. For you guys down boots on the ground or with the team, did this come out of nowhere? How likely was this to take place, and what inevitably happened, do you think, Rick? Yeah, no, I think it was a surprise. I mean, he was going to be a deal that might be a little harder to do just because he's 31 years old. He still has a year left on his contract, but he's underpaid, Pat, based on his production in the league. you know he's probably about 17th and to get him in the top 10 you probably got to average about 25 million dollars a year but they didn't get close and and I got to be honest with you man it's one thing to say you know I'm unhappy with my contract maybe I'm going to hold out or hold in but this guy went straight to I want to be traded and that that's a different situation I think and it's going to resonate inside that locker room not in a positive way obviously his teammates is going to be disappointed.
14:34This is a fundamental piece of this defense, of this franchise. He's done a lot of great things without much help at times. For him to say he wants out, that's a big step. I don't know how it ends. We're still a ways to go. He's going to report to training camp, or has reported, from what I understand, so he won't be fined$50 ,000 a day. I don't know if there's really any other talk scheduled. I don't know how far apart they were, but this is one that would impact the Bucs defense as much as any player right now that they could take off of it.
15:06Pat McAfee:Okay, obviously, huge name, huge story in Tampa Bay, across the rest of the league as well. Vita Vea, beloved, I believe, in the locker room as well, right? Everybody that's come on that we've asked about Vita Vea, they love him. I think he shit-talks everybody. I think everybody respects and appreciates him as well. Is this a new era? Because we just saw that you reported that Baker Mayfield was not able to get a deal done with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so they will halt negotiation and contract negotiations for the rest of the season. There was a timeline that Baker Mayfield's people put on.
15:36Pat McAfee:Don't want to go into camp worrying about this. So Vita Veya wants a trade. Baker's not able to get a deal done. Mike Evans is gone. Levante David is gone. Go ahead, Tone.
15:45Darius Butler:Yeah, you just talked about all four of those guys. All four of those guys are captains. Like Levante was a captain for 10-plus years. Mike Evans, another 10-plus year guy. And then Baker, you assume he will be there, but a captain. And then Vita, a captain. Like, what are the vibes going into camp this year? Are they down in the building? or is this just like a fan-based internet thing where it seems like the vibes might be down a bit in Tampa? Well, I think any time this happens, it's going to affect the culture of your locker room, right? Because you want to see players that produce get rewarded.
16:14Again, we don't have both sides of the story. We don't know what kind of money either of these players were seeking. In the case of Baker Mayfield, I would never bet against the guy that walked on at Texas Tech, walked on at Oklahoma, won the Heisman Trophy, was the first overall pick, took a$4 million make it deal and did what he's done here in Tampa Bay. I mean, he wants this to be his forever home, whether he stays here as a player or not. This community loves him. I think the team loves him. But is it unlikely that Baker would bet on himself? No, that's who this dude is, man. Like, you back him in a corner, and I think the danger would be he goes out there, has an unbelievable year.
16:52Yeah, you could use a franchise tag, but there's all kind of ramifications with debt money with that. But what if he says, you know what, you didn't believe in me before this season and Matthew Stafford's retired and I want to go to the L.A. Rams? You know, there's a lot of things that can happen in the next, you know, six to eight months. So we'll see. But he set that deadline and he's apparently sticking to it. From what I understand, they weren't very close on an agreement. So Baker will play out his final year in Tampa and then we'll see what happens.
17:21Pat McAfee:Throwing a lot of touchdowns to Mike Evans in this highlight clip, obviously. You're going to have to replace that as well. That's a huge story because maybe they are moving on to what the next iteration of the Bucs have to be, or this is all just a part of the business mumbo-jumbo. Now, you talk about business, especially in the NFL. You win a Super Bowl, but how long do you have? Ty has the last question for you here, Stratton.
17:42Darius Butler:Yeah, Rick, there were parts of last year where it seemed like Todd Bowles was kind of on the hot seat. We saw one of those press conferences where he was, you know, expletive late and dropped a bunch of F-bombs. He never does that kind of stuff. and then obviously the way the season ended. Do you get the sense that he's maybe kind of on the hot seat going into this year? And then also, what about Jason Light? I think every coach is, if you're not named Andy Reid or maybe Kyle Shanahan or Sean McVay, they're all on the hot seat, right? And certainly Todd is there too. They want to win Super Bowls here.
18:11There's no secret about that. Although he's in the first year of what was a three-year contract extension this season. But you have to win, and I think you just look at what he did. You know, defensively, they were really bad last year. They went out and did a lot of things on defense, whether it was in the draft with Ruben Bain, Josiah Trotter, bringing in guys like A'shaun Robinson. They're trying to fix this defense, and he's in charge of that defense. It was not good last year. And so you can't have 5-1, 6-2 starts and then collapse every season. So absolutely he's on the hot seat. As for Jason, I don't know.
18:42There's not many GMs that have his resume right now with the Super Bowl win included. But everybody's evaluated every single year. And so, you know, this is a what have you done for me lately business. I think all those guys know that they have to win and win right away. And that's why they made so many changes. I mean, they made four coaching changes on defense alone this offseason. So that'll tell you how Todd Bowles feels about his job security.
19:04Pat McAfee:All right. Well, we know your job security is good forever. We appreciate the hell out of you, man. Thank you for joining us. That's Rick Stride. Rick Stride is the host of Sports Day, Tampa Bay. It's a good show. A lot going on right now down there. Oh, yeah. I bet you Rick Stroud's kind of in there cooking. Oh, yeah. Definitely. Let's not just go to Tampa, huh? Let's go camping. Let's go camping. Let's go camping. We need to go camping, don't we? Let's head to Kansas City, ladies and gentlemen. Joining us now, ESPN Chiefs, a beat reporter and writer, Nate Taylor. Hey, Nate. How you doing, brother?
19:38I'm doing great, Pat. How you doing?
19:39Pat McAfee:Good. Just real quick, I'm going to say something here just to kind of learn. You let me know. Camp on Awana, we hold you in our hearts. And when we think about you Yeah, I'm going to not be able to finish that Okay Yeah, it's unfortunate
19:58Darius Butler:Learning a lot about Salute Your Shorts Might be a two American situation here, boy I think we're on to something
20:11Yes That might have been right How old are you? Before my generation I'm going to be 39 in September. So that's how you write. That's smack dab in the middle of it. I'm 39 as well, yeah. Yeah, okay. Hey, let's chalk it up to two Americans. Just saying.
20:31Pat McAfee:Hey, by the way, there's a great series waiting on. Yeah. Waiting on you guys out here. Fucking salute your shorts. I'm sure it holds up. It does hold up. I look it up. It's unbelievable. All right, Nate, let's talk about the Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes being back, obviously a huge story. We see him rolling left into his knee, throwing. He looks good. Dr. David Chow, who runs sports, super medicine on the internet. Football docs. Yeah, football docs. He said obviously looks good. He's known as a quick healer. But first week TBD, we'll see where he's at. What is kind of the messaging around you guys for where Patrick Mahomes is and his health-wise, and what should we expect over the next couple weeks of training camp?
21:11Yeah, Patrick Mahomes has looked as well as you could have hoped if you're the Kansas City Chiefs in there. fans in these first couple days at training camp. Now, he practiced on Saturday, Sunday, took yesterday off as a veteran rest day, which has normally been the case. And obviously, the full team will have its first practice tomorrow up in St. Joe at Missouri Western State University. As you can see here, Patrick Mahomes has done a lot of work in terms of his rehab and his recovery to be able to do a lot of these things that I think was a question coming into training camp. Can he operate under center?
21:43Can he move within the pocket? Was he even going to be cleared, Pat? to do 11-on-11 team drills, which was not the case earlier in the offseason. So as much as you can ask for Patrick Mahomes right now without the pads on, let's see how it goes over the course of this upcoming week. But this is a positive sign because this will be the first repetitions in the entire offseason and now entering training camp where we will have Rasheed Rice. He'll have Xavier Worthy, Taequann Thornton, obviously Travis Kelsey and Kenneth Walker, their biggest offseason acquisition. So for everything that we've seen right now, He looks to be good.
22:17He looks to be in a good place mentally. I think that's something that people haven't maybe talked about enough is that he's really energized by being back on the practice field, not being in the training room 24-7, 365. He's now getting to a point where, OK, I'm going to build timing with my receivers. I'm going to build, you know, true bonding and chemistry with my teammates and the coaching staff in terms of how do we get the offense to get back on track? And he even said on Friday, he's got to get better at the deep ball. the only way you do that Pat is you have a strong core and you got your legs under you and your footwork is proper and sound so that's what I'll be looking at over the next couple days as the Chiefs have their real first look at what this office might be like with Patrick Mahomes trying to come back and get ready for week one on September 14th against the Denver Broncos.
23:03Pat McAfee:Hell yeah Nate you nailed that uh whenever you talk about getting better at the deep ball having a dude too also helps you know that is something that helps but anytime we see Patrick Mahomes on a football field were pumped up about it, were happy about it. I saw him on a dance floor and on a stage. It looked like him and the last were having a great time. I'm telling you, I think that was one of my biggest takeaways other than Brad Pitt bringing me a Jack and Dyke, which was unbelievable. Yeah, massive takeaway. Yeah, that's a huge takeaway from the entire thing. And shout out, I think anything he does would be good.
23:28Pat McAfee:And Bradley Cooper's so handsome. I mean, it is outrageous. But the dance floor, which I did head to, the Chiefs were all – I mean, it was everybody. They were all in there. And then Patrick Mahomes was right in the middle of that thing. I mean, so whenever you talk about Travis and Patrick Mahomes being in the middle of it all, it's like that's great two guys to be leading this entire thing. And if they got the dogs and the weapons and are overlooked, so they got a chip on their shoulder, I love it. You talked about a Super Bowl MVP there, though, that's been hard to find any clips of. Go ahead, Tone.
23:56Darius Butler:Yeah, Nate, you did. And I was looking for clips of Kenneth Walker from camp so far, and it was hard to find any. But Mahomes already said this year, like, he realizes he needs to run less. Like, he ran so much last year. Now with Kenneth Walker, do we think Mahomes, that'll be less pressure off of him to use his legs? And was it just an offensive line thing with Pacheco in the running game last year? Or what do we think about the running game coming in this year? Yeah, one of the things that you have to realize about last year is that the offensive line had injuries throughout the course of the season, right?
24:25Even Josh Simmons, the dynamic left tackle who was a first-round pick, he was absent for the team for about a month. And, of course, Pacheco had his own struggles coming back from his own leg injury in 2024. So there were a number of factors. When it comes to Kenneth Walker, though, at least what we saw in the offseason program, and again, we'll see him for the first time in full tomorrow. He has the explosion. He has the vision. And what the Chiefs like is that he can make people miss in the second level of the defense, right, the linebackers, the safeties. That was something that the Chiefs missed so much last year was not only just explosive plays, but being able to break tackles or evade defenders who were coming at a certain angle where it put more of the pressure on the homes.
25:06Now, a lot of teams last year, fellas, played man coverage against the Chiefs on critical downs, which meant that Patrick had to go through his own calculation in his mind, realizing that, OK, if no one's open against man coverage, I got to get out of this pocket and I got to go. And one of the things I'll always remember, Pat, about that opening night in Sao Paulo is that he was running over defensive backs. He was trying to get through linebackers to make it a point that he was going to be a tougher quarterback. He wasn't necessarily going to use the sideline to his advantage that we had seen in the past.
25:36Well, now he's got to change that mentality once again because of the ACL and LCL surgery that he had on his left knee. He's going to have to rely on handing the ball off to Kenneth Walker. And I think for the coaching staff, most notably Andy Reid, the play caller, man, you've got to find a way to get Patrick Mahomes under center so that you can have the true capability of a traditional play action drop back passing game. right that was something that the Chiefs really weren't good at last year it's something they really didn't feature a lot in their office but if you got a legitimate threat in Kenneth Walker well now those linebackers and those safeties have to respect that and maybe now you can throw the ball over the top to Xavier Worthy or maybe you can find openings for Travis Kelsey in the intermediate zone if the running game is effective and you can set that up for the play action pass
26:21Pat McAfee:yeah play action obviously a great weapon for a quarterback have to be able to go under center if you want to get the run game going allegedly I mean every team that's ever won has been able to do it shout out to harold r koonce pronounced uh for this video i i have learned that lesson publicly that uh k-u-n-t-z is koonce of course sure of course it is it could be something else though and uh that's just my natural brain but koonce all over it nate all over it and uh we appreciate the fact that we just called out not having any uh kenneth walker clips he's not a rookie so he reports camp today sure that's not possible that's on us for getting upset about that But I do appreciate that Patrick Mahomes come out and said, I got to stop taking as many hits.
27:01Pat McAfee:Because last year, whenever we were down at Texas Tech for college game day, he walked up onto the set and I just, hey, listen, man. You and I, I know I'm a fan. I think we could say, you need to stop running. You need to stop getting the hits that you're getting. And he told me, well, if we need it, you know, the offense needs it. We're going to keep doing it. It's like, no, you need to stop, man. This is for the good of fucking football, okay, for everybody. We need you to stop getting hit for the good of ball. and obviously he was a monster. He was running over a lot of people. I mean, he was giving them out.
27:32Pat McAfee:I'm happy he has those on his highlight reel for whenever he goes in the Hall of Fame. Now let's get back to the magic. Let's get back to running backwards 30 yards and then throwing it as far as we possibly can. Let's get back to not getting killed every time I see you on TV. I'm happy that's going to happen. Now, last question. You bring in Kenneth Walker on offense. On defense, though, lose a couple. D-Bud has a last question for you, Nate. Yeah, Nate, part of this dynasty, obviously Mahomes has been great, but defense has helped win some of these championships. Who do you think would be carrying, I guess, a heavier load in the defense?
28:01It would be a lot of guys departing, obviously, a lot of new faces, even some familiar faces back like Snead coming back. Who are some of these guys that we expect, I guess, carrying more weight on that defensive end this year? Yeah, I mean, once again, Chris Jones is going to have to be just an all-world player at defensive tackle. Now, he moves out to edge on third down occasionally. But, look, the Chiefs are going through a youth movement yet again. It's something they did in 2022. with Tripp McDuffie and Brian Cook and Jalen Watson. And I mentioned all those guys because they're no longer here.
28:31Those guys all got paid. They all went elsewhere. Obviously, the Rams sought out to have Tripp McDuffie and make him the top paid cornerback, at least for now. Jalen Watson was their number two cornerback. He's in Los Angeles as well. Even Leo Chennault, who was probably their most versatile defensive player in the linebacking corps, he's in Washington. So look for these names now. You got Mansoor Delaney, who the Chiefs moved up to six. and they're basically asking him, hey, you can be a version of Tripp McDuffie or you need to be slightly better than Tripp McDuffie, who we know is an all-pro player.
29:00You got Peter Woods, who I think might be their best pick in the draft at 29. He was a defensive tackle out of Clemson and for years, fellas. We know Chris Jones is going to get double teamed on third down. We know that Steve Spagnuolo is going to set up some blitzes where you use Chris Jones as basically furniture to get somebody open through a gap or two. Well, can we have Peter Woods be able to win one-on-one when you know Chris Jones is going to take up much of that attention? The Chiefs are asking a lot out of R. Mason Thomas, a second-round pick. He might be a starter on opening night between him and Ashton Jalati in terms of, hey, can you give us a speed element off the edge that the Chiefs really haven't had since Frank Clark?
29:40And again, Frank Clark has been on the team since, what, 2022? They're asking a lot out of these rookies. You know you're going to have Nick Bolton. You know you're going to have Chris Jones in the mix. and Spagas is going to obviously dial it up with blitzes. But these young guys got to be exactly what the draft class was in 2022, which is durable, dynamic, and they're going to grow over the course of the season so that they can be ready when the Chiefs, if the Chiefs make the postseason, so they can be core contributors. But as of right now, guys, the biggest question mark to me is, outside of Patrick Mahomes, how does this defense deal to be ready on opening night against Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos, who have a pretty good offense themselves?
30:17Pat McAfee:We shall see. And not a bad defense for Patrick Mahomes. Come back from NACL to take on opening night. We appreciate you, Nate. Camp on Awana. We hold you in our hearts. And when we think about you.
30:35Darius Butler:Salute your shorts. There. Nailed it. Close enough. Yeah.
30:38Pat McAfee:Nate Taylor. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We're getting there. Song sucks. Stop. It's stink. It's an open to a fucking, it's a jingle. Yeah. What do you mean? We grew up in the age of great jingles. Which one? That one fucking stinks. I don't know.
30:55Darius Butler:We know the next guy probably watched this show.
30:57Pat McAfee:Ladies and gentlemen, let's not just stop in Tampa Bay and Kansas City. We got to continue. Let's go camping, boys. Let's go camping. Let's go to St. Vincent. Oh. Let's go to Laetro. Ladies and gentlemen, Pittsburgh Steelers reporter for The Pat McAfee Show. you can find his writing on X. Might be the right answer for a lot of local reporters. Nobody's going to give Caboli the credit for it. Ladies and gentlemen, Mark Caboli. Hey, Caboli. How you doing? What's behind you there? Mr. Rogers? Mr. Rogers. And? I am in the, I don't know, I'm in the Fred Rogers Center, and it seemed like a good place to set up camp here, so I'm guessing it was from one of his shows.
31:39I'm not quite sure.
31:40Pat McAfee:Okay, well, we appreciate you having no idea who the musician was that was there. I appreciate whatever I learned that day. Mr. Rogers Neighborhood? Yeah. Mr. Rogers Neighborhood? Yep. Yes, absolutely. Thank you. Now we're talking. Okay. The cardigan on. All right, all right. Yeah, switch out the shoe. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Okay. Yeah, here we go. Yinzer. Here we go. Yeah, I actually found that out, I think, last year when we were training camp. Yeah, great Pittsburgh man. Okay, let's talk about Pittsburgh men. Mike McCarthy, Aaron Rodgers. Obviously, Omar just spoke about how much he gets asked about how much Mike McCarthy's a Pittsburgh guy and how much he loves it for the Steelers.
32:23Pat McAfee:Aaron came out and said, this is definitely my last year. I thought about retirement. I love Mike. I came back for Mike to do this year. So potentially, you know, lead the way for the next quarterback, just like he did for Jordan Love in there in Green Bay, whether that is Aller or Will Howard. What is the big story right now? Cabol's out of Pittsburgh because it feels like all kumbaya going into camp does it not first time long time yeah I mean it's first time in 19 years now that we've seen something different up here at the training camp and it has been totally different I say the story of the day is where the story of camp so far would be Mike McCarthy and just how he has changed virtually everything about this organization and how they go about their business in such a small portion of time.
33:09I mean, his attention to detail, and I don't know, you guys probably knew this more than me, but his attention to detail is just off the charts here. And that surprised a lot of people. I think it surprised some of the players. Definitely surprised me. He's raring to go here. Like I said, he's changed everything from the start of practice to how they go about practice of they're not going to hit it all during training camp which has been a stealer staple for years now but how McCarthy has just taken over and you could tell that he's a 16-year veteran in this business of how quickly he's been able to get up to speed and knowing what he wants to do and he's been very very impressive to me when he got hired here a lot A lot of people in Pittsburgh were like saying, what is what are they doing here?
34:03Instantly, he won them over. And if anybody comes out here the next three weeks and watch him, I think they're going to win him. He's going to win them over even more because Mike McCarthy has been very impressive so far.
34:14Pat McAfee:So I said this publicly and a lot of people got mad that I was being asked about this. I mean, I don't know why I wouldn't be. but a lot of people got mad that I said yes, the Steelers called me to ask me about Coach Mike McCarthy and what it was like to work with him versus some other guys and what it has been like and my big takeaway was just how prepared Mike McCarthy was every single week I mean, he showed up with a list of shit that he wanted to talk about every single week he had ideas, he was calling, checking in he was watching, it was like Mike McCarthy was fully invested in our show but he also had like 10 other things he was also coaching his daughter, I believe they won a national championship I think out there So it's like he's just a diligent planner.
34:54Pat McAfee:You know, he's very intentional with everything he does. And I do believe this means no offense to anybody. No offense to anybody. Exactly. Please no offense to anybody. But when you're a large human and you have a Yinzer accent, I think the natural reaction is like this guy, big doofus. You know? And I think a lot of people – no, we're talking about Coach McCarthy. Oh, okay. We're talking about Coach McCarthy. We're talking about Coach McCarthy. Yeah, no offense. I said also. to anybody here. But I think that was kind of a lot of people's thought. It's like, this guy's like this. And our experience with him was the complete opposite.
35:27Pat McAfee:I mean, it was like notes. It was everything. So I said that whenever I was asked about it. And then whenever he gets hired, they're like, yeah, we did call and ask how it was. And I just thought it was very impressive what he did. He prepared more than any television person I've ever seen. And it was like, if that's how he treats just like a once a week stop by with us, I couldn't imagine what he does with his actual career that he understands. And oh yeah, he wins games all the time. So it's like, can he figure it out in Pittsburgh? They've always had a good defense offense, seemingly been an issue, health kind of a thing, attention to detail, seemingly a thing.
35:58Pat McAfee:It's like everything he brings should lead to success quickly. And it sounds like it's already kind of settling in, especially with a quarterback. Who's going to be all in now, tone has some questions for you, Mark.
36:07Darius Butler:Kind of building off that TJ watt came out today and he said, I know I say this every year, but it feels like this year we are actually going to move around him. Herbig and high Smith. And then DK kind of came out and said, said something similar about him moving around and how much better the offense is going to be this year like you talk about like us as fans how we can see it with coach McCarthy it feels like the players as well have already noticed um what's going on with coach McCarthy and maybe it feels like they're excited for the change yeah absolutely that's what you've noticed right away it is something different and I say different doesn't mean bad different just means obviously different.
36:44You can go about things many of different ways and be successful. And what it looks like is they are going to do things a little bit differently on offense and defense, especially with defense. I mean, we've been screaming as we, I say fans of the Steelers about moving around TJ Watt for years and years. He's pushed back on and he's admitted to pushing back on that the past couple of years, but he says he has no choice in that issue. Now, Patrick Graham, the new defensive coordinator, or requiring him and putting him in positions to move those guys inside, outside, all around. And if you don't know where T.J.
37:20Watt's going to line up on every single play, it makes him a little bit more difficult to be able to double team him or slide somebody to that side and help out with that. So that should help out the defense tremendously. But this coaching staff is very, very deep, very, very accomplished. that should help out but these guys do look like feel like it's just a breath of fresh air it's nothing against Tomlin I mean Tomlin did what he wanted to do and how he did it and it was successful for many many years but it just at the end it did may have seemed like it got stale a little bit I didn't think it got stale but once you see McCarthy coming in and bringing different types of feelings and different types of schemes and different types of things he wants to do then you really noticed, yeah, maybe it did get a little bit still there a little bit.
38:11So offensively, Aaron wants to go under center, which he didn't do much last year. He wants to play action, which he didn't do much last year. And they got a whole heck of a lot of weapons now on offense. And that wide receiver room is pretty deep when you got guys like Metcalf, Pittman, rookie Jeremy Bernard, Roman Wilson, Rico Dottle, Jalen Warren running the ball, Frymouth, Washington. Why, why, why?
38:37Pat McAfee:Yeah, it feels like the team is in a better position than it's ever been. I like that your ears are already for training camp. They're kicking those AirPods out. I like you're still wired, too, because you don't want your brain to get fried. Yo-Yo Ma and Mr. Rogers looking over your shoulder there. So, obviously, three icons kind of on the screen. Yes, Yo-Yo Ma. Yeah, I remember now. Is that who that is? Yo-Yo Ma didn't play football, so Kamoli doesn't know who that is. I have no idea who that is. The wired ear buzzer, first of all, I don't think wireless have made it to Pittsburgh yet. And this is, if Aaron Rodgers wears them, they're good.
39:13Yeah, Aaron gifted it to everybody.
39:14Pat McAfee:I'll tell you what, Aaron wins a Super Bowl in Pittsburgh, and he said this is his final year and he wins a Super Bowl. He has no idea what that city will do for him for the rest of his life, especially if McCarthy goes on to have... All the ice cream he wants. Forever. And he is just house and ice cream. You know, I am a little bit worried because I saw Michael Pittman put an off-season photo dump on Instagram, and then Ben Skronic posted like, I thought I was going to be in here. He wasn't. So is there a little bit of, you know, they've been hanging out, but is there still, you know, sometimes when you hang out, you don't become friends.
39:42Pat McAfee:It actually goes.
39:43Darius Butler:Yeah, he said Ben's going for the best friend title for Aaron. I think Benny Skull currently has it.
39:47Pat McAfee:Well, I just want to let you know, Benny Skull is very confused on why he was not in the dump. And I'm like, wait a minute. Is there a little, here it is. Not going to lie. I expected to be in this dump. It's like, yo, is everything okay over there? I almost commented underneath. Is everything okay in Pittsburgh? I would have loved to see the reaction immediately. From my understanding, Benny Scully is the glue guy of all glue guys. From my understanding, he is the guy that he wants around everywhere. And we would say this, Pittman, guy would die on a field for you. Yeah. Like, actually, he will go head first into a blender to catch a ball.
40:19Pat McAfee:I mean, he's perfect for the city of Pittsburgh. I'm almost getting too excited. But now, before we think about the future, last question for you. We're going to have to revisit the last 25 years. Go ahead, D-Bud. Yeah, absolutely. Something I've been following along with you. your greatest stealers of the last 25 years. I know this list was tough. This is obviously a great organization. Your top four, how did you get to that top four, and have you gotten any pushback for it at all? I love it, by the way. Well, the only pushback I got back was from Nick and Tone, questioning one of my lower picks there instead of leaving off Santonio Holmes.
40:55So I'm sorry about that, Santonio. Maybe I should have slid you in there somewhere as a tie. But no, I mean, those top four or five are really, really difficult. Not number one. We know Ben is the GOAT, right? Antonio Brown, I don't think people realize that six-year span he had from, I believe, 13 to 18 and how dominant he was. And Troy, Troy's Troy, man. I mean, the guy made big play after big play. And T.J. Watt, when you have 115 career sacks, he's up there as well. So it's a really tough list. and you look at the top ten, I probably did Alan Fennec as dirty there. Yeah, I thought so, but
41:34Pat McAfee:he's real thin, so he's not going to go fight you right now. He's trying to live a healthy life. No, Jerome Bettis is just a wild thing to think about, but you go, last 25 years, he was only a couple times. It's like Santonio Holmes where Santonio, he's got the best catch in the history of the Super Bowl, actually, one net against Arizona. Now, granted, this is you putting together a list on us, and we're allowed to do this. I would never sign up to do this. No, because you're going to piss a lot of people off. For instance, Santonio Holmes is going to say, Oh, okay.
42:00Darius Butler:I said I had one gripe that Sant should have been in there, and I was like, who would I take off? And I love Joe. I love Joe Hayden. But he was only there for five years. Sant was there for four years. Sant was the Super Bowl MVP, best catch of all time. The kickstand catch. The kickstand catch.
42:15Pat McAfee:Caboli, that is something. It feels like you do have some, obviously, some contentious reactions. Antonio Brown at number two. I think a lot of people are going to go A, B over Troy fucking Paul Muller. You run some Antonio highlights. It's like, yeah, maybe, actually, if we could have kept it. Nonetheless, great list, great team, great organization, great correspondent. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Rogers, Yo-Yo Ma, and Mark Caboli. Yeah, Cabols. Ladies and gentlemen, we got to get out to the West Coast, don't we? Yeah, we do. A lot of conversations happen about this team. They bring in a legendary wide receiver.
42:52Pat McAfee:They potentially lose a wide receiver just because he doesn't want to play there. Does he want to play anywhere? We don't know. Got a young quarterback. That's a stallion who's paid. And they got a coach who's battling a recovery of a bad, bad car accident that happened on July 14th. Hey, let's go camping. Let's go camping. Let's go camping. Let's head out to San Francisco. Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen, he covers the 49ers for the San Francisco Standard. David Lombardi. We are way past time. What up, Longbo? How's it going? You guys missed the city yet?
43:25Darius Butler:I was about to say, we're going to need to push.
43:26Pat McAfee:We are never going to get everybody in in this hour that we scheduled. We are already 10 minutes behind. Lombo, we apologize for making you wait, but we appreciate you joining us. We do love that city. How much are you loving what you're seeing and hearing about this Niners team going into the year? Kyle Shanahan news, very scary, sounds like. 40 stitches, concussion protocol that came out today. He was holding his phone, but somebody swerved into him. He is not being held liable, but certainly very serious injuries have taken place. he's kind of watching as Chris Forrester's going. Is that the big story coming out of San Francisco 49ers camp, or is it Mike Evans getting acclimated with the offense?
44:02Pat McAfee:What do you think is really the big talking point right now, Lambo? Well, it's a combination of both because the good news with Kyle is that he has been out on the field the first two days of practice. About 20 to 30 minutes, he's been watching in deep center field. That's where John Lynch likes to watch from because Lynch, in his playing days, is a safety. He likes that vantage point. And yesterday, actually, the 49ers ran a couple deep passes right toward where Kyle and John were standing. And Kyle actually had to scatter. He had to move because he had a receiver and a cornerback bearing down on him.
44:34And he got out of the way just fine. He's been wearing sunglasses. And I haven't really gotten an up-close look at the injuries on his face. But he has a lot of fractures, and he had to have those 40 stitches. But the good news is that he is out on the field for those 30 minutes a day. The concussion is probably limiting the time that he can be out in the bright sun, but they're hoping he's going to be back full-time sooner rather than later. But what he has seen in those 30 minutes, guys, is a wide receiver core that is way, way more threatening deep than last year. Starting with Mike Evans, but Dajon Stribbling is fast, and Ricky Pearsall is healthy.
45:09So they've been attacking and stretching the ball downfield quite a bit here over the first two practices.
45:14Pat McAfee:Okay, we'd like to hear that. Tell me about the defense. We've got dogs everywhere. Obviously, Fred Warner says tackling is not that hard because he has run through somebody's face, I believe is what he said. And he plays like that, as does the defense. They've had injuries the last couple of years, I do believe. Raheem Moore is over there now. Yeah. Luos, D.C. I mean, there's potential magic in the air for the Niners as a whole. Tell me about the defensive side of the ball and what expectations are for them. Well, guys, just go back to the first two weeks of last season, before Nick Bosa went down in week three, and then Fred Warner went down in week six.
45:44But the pass rush closed two games, two wins for the 49ers, including one on the road over the Seahawks, who ended up being a dominant team that won the Super Bowl. That was Nick Bosa knocking the ball away from Sam Darnold. So obviously when they lost those two guys early on, it was all downhill from there. They couldn't stop the run at the end of the season. They couldn't rush the passer. They had only 20 sacks. That was the fewest in the league. So I said at the start of this offseason that the 49ers' biggest additions, no matter what they did in free agency or the draft, would be Fred Warner and Nick Bosa.
46:17Because he effectively didn't have those guys last year. They're both back. Nick looks unreal. You can't even tell that he tore his ACL. The third time he tore his ACL. But he looks like he's in great shape. Trent Williams even said that it looks like he's in better shape than he was before he tore his ACL last year. And Fred, it's funny. Every single time he makes a play, he looks over toward the media. And he pretends he has a phone in his hand and he starts saying, hey, tweet about it, tweet about it. He's very, very excited to be out there. So they've got the two veteran stalwarts. But then, of course, they're adding some young talent to that defense.
46:51They were the oldest defense just two years ago in the entire NFL. Now they're one of the younger defenses in the entire league. So they're hoping to fill it in with some nice speed and exuberance around Warner and Bosa. Kittle is 100 % healthy? Not yet. I would – he's ahead of schedule, and he is still on PUP right now, but he's shooting to be back for week one. The problem is that there's going to be a 15-hour flight week one, and I'm not really sure if they're going to let him get on that flight. But he's tracking to be back sooner rather than later.
47:21Pat McAfee:Hey, down under is awesome, though. Yeah. Hey, last question for me. Camp on Awana, we hold you in our hearts, and when we think about you. Oh, boy.
47:33Darius Butler:I have no idea. God damn it. Okay. Bombo, he's younger though, right? Okay.
47:38Pat McAfee:Is there three? Lombardi, how old are you? I don't know. I did hear a little extra. Me, I'm 38. Shit. Where are you from? Where are you from? Central California. There it is, yeah. What does that mean, Tony? There's a lot of Americans. No, I'm sorry. Visalia, California. We can shout out to my hometown. It's near Fresno. Shout out to them. They missed out on something pretty big, but I do like everything about it. We appreciate you. That's Lombardi himself, ladies and gentlemen.
48:02Darius Butler:He's a Stanford guy. I ain't fucking walking. Did Nickelodeon only air on the East Coast? I don't know.
48:07Pat McAfee:I'm trying to wonder. There it is. Camp on Awana. We hold you in our hearts. And when we think about you. No way. No way. I'm clicking it. Let me see that cast. No. Look at Ugg. No. Look at Ugg. I was watching Power Rangers, all right? Those were a ride. Us too. Those were a ride. So was Barney. You watched a little Barney? Love Barney. Love Barney. Did you watch Rugrats? Rugrats was great. Because it was right around then. Rugrats was good. Doug. It was recess.
48:38Darius Butler:What was that one? Daria? Clarissa explains it all. I didn't watch Daria. I don't think Daria was MTV. It was. Same time.
48:45Pat McAfee:Yeah, Rugrats into Salute Your Shorts are certainly real. The next guy, I know it.
48:49Darius Butler:He might be too young.
48:52Pat McAfee:How old is he?
48:53Darius Butler:He's a spry young pup. What? Yeah. Yeah. Really?
48:58Pat McAfee:Oh, yeah. With a wise soul. Yeah. Ladies and gentlemen. Well said. Joining us now from Green Bay is let's go camping. Let's go camping. Let's go camping. To a team that brought in$453 million in national revenue last year. Their books are public because they're publicly owned. We get to learn that. One of the most storied franchises in all of sports, covered by a man who writes for The Athletic, which is obviously headed by The New York Times. What an honor this is. Ladies and gentlemen, Matt Schneidman. Yeah. Oh, Carly Lambeau's place. Wow. That's incredible. How you doing, Schneids? I'm good.
49:35How are you guys? Always a pleasure to be on.
49:37Pat McAfee:The honor's ours. Camp on a water. We hold you in our hearts. Knew it. I got no clue. I've never heard of that show. Too young. This is unbelievable. How old are you? I mean, I'm 31, so I'm not that young.
49:49Darius Butler:Yeah, that's a little. That's too young. I've never heard of it. I'm 31 as well. He's more of like the CatDog, Hey Arnold era.
49:56Pat McAfee:Oh, one of those types. I know those.
49:58Darius Butler:See? Yep. Yeah.
49:59Pat McAfee:You a big anime guy, too? Those were good. But I know those two. Hold on. Do not even start questioning. Salute your sponsors. You didn't watch Dude Ranch either?
50:12Darius Butler:Hey, dude.
50:13Pat McAfee:I did not. Let's move along, please. We got to talk about the Green Bay Packers. Sorry, sorry, sorry. What's the story over there? Policies, policies. He's moving all in. We got a different vibe on the squad because we know that we're trying to win a Super Bowl at all costs. Or what is the thoughts over there with Green Bay? Micah, all the way back, how do we feel about what the past? Packers are going into this 2026 season, Mr. Schneidman? Yeah, I think there are three big storylines, and let me know if the wind is a little too much right here. No, you're doing great. Micah's recovery. He's starting camp on the PUP list.
50:46He's probably going to miss the first month and a half of the season. The Packers have a strict nine-month no football rule after ACL tears, and Micah wasn't even a clean ACL tear. He had a meniscus injury too, so he had to get that repaired. So the earliest we'll see him on the field, even on the practice field, is September 30th. That would be nine months and one day after his surgery. That would be the start of the week of practice before their week four game against the Buccaneers. If we think he needs a couple weeks to get ramped up, he's probably going to return week six here at Lambeau Sunday night football against who?
51:20The Dallas Cowboys. Yeah. Hell yeah.
51:22Pat McAfee:We like that. The script makers are going to be pumped whenever they see that that's possible. The strict no-field policy by Green Bay for nine months. I'm just learning that right now. I like that. Yeah, thank you for introducing us to that. Even if they spend the most amount of money they've ever spent on a player, they're sticking to their policy, which I think is kind of policy's policy, which I can certainly respect. Let's go to the offensive side a little bit. Jordan Love taking another step. What do we expect? Loses Dobbs, obviously. That's a big deal. Pay another wide receiver. What should we expect from the offense, Schneids?
51:53yeah I think they have you know three clear-cut wide receivers right now in the past the story's always been all right they have probably five or six number two number three wide receivers but they let Romeo Dobbs walk to the Patriots they trade Duntavian Wicks to the Eagles now it's Christian Watson Jaden Reed and Matthew Golden there's really nobody else that they're going to strongly feature so there are also two other big question marks on the offense and that's Tucker Craft. He tore his ACL in week nine last year. He's starting camp on the PUP list, but he told us a couple weeks ago that he expects to play week one in Minnesota.
52:28So that's good news because he, at the time he got injured last year, you could have made the case that he was a top two, top three tight end in the NFL. And he's probably going to become, I wouldn't be surprised if he is the highest paid tight end in the league here in the next couple of weeks, maybe even before he steps on the field. And then another big question on the offense is what's going to happen with Josh Jacobs' legal situation? He's still under investigation by the Brown County District Attorney's Office, which I emailed them on Thursday. They said, you know, it's still an open case.
52:59We'll have an update when something's resolved. But he was arrested and then jailed on five charges relating to domestic abuse in May, released from jail because the DA's office couldn't find enough evidence at the time to pursue those charges. They wanted to continue their investigation. He practiced all offseason while he was under investigation. Players on the team have strongly supported him. Matt LaFleur has said he's been a model citizen around here, but his future is kind of uncertain as well until we find out how this legal situation resolves itself.
53:30Pat McAfee:God, it's crazy what sports has all involved in it. I mean, there's so much luck. There's so many mistakes that can't happen. There's so many things that have to take place to win a Lombardi. You guys know anything about that over there, Lombardi? A little bit. Do you?
53:44Darius Butler:Just a little bit.
53:45Pat McAfee:It's been a while, but a little bit. Ty has a question for you, Schneid.
53:48Darius Butler:Yeah, Schneid, what about the O-line? Two years ago, that was like, you know, they arguably had one of the best offensive lines in the league. Then last year, it was kind of bad, changing a lot of different guys around. They let a couple guys go. Are we anticipating that they'll kind of have the same nucleus and they're not just going to start a bunch of different combinations this year? Do they feel good about where their offensive line is at going into this year? Yeah, I think they do, but there's two big questions, and that's Zach Tom, who's their best offensive lineman, who's received some...
54:18Sorry, there's a truck behind me. I like that we're working.
54:21Pat McAfee:Hell yeah. That's what we're doing. We're working out here. People are doing real work. Zach Tom... Sorry, let me wait for them to drive by. That's good. That's New York Times in here right there. I like what you did there. Thank you for the professionalism. You're welcome. Zach Tom, their best offensive lineman, received a couple all-throw votes the last couple years, but he partially tore his patellar tendon against the Broncos same game Micah tore his ACL in last year. He's ready to go for training camp. He's not on PUP, but he was kind of banged up all last year after getting a huge extension.
54:57And then Jordan Morgan, he was their first-round pick in 2024, played left tackle at Arizona, but he has played everywhere else on the offensive line besides left tackle in meaningful games here in the NFL. He's there starting left tackle this year. He's finally getting the chance to play the position he wants to play. We don't know if he's any good on Jordan Love's blind side. So that's going to be a massive question, Mark, is can a recent first-round pick succeed at left tackle, and is Zach Tom healthy after off-season surgery? If those two things check out, I think all systems are go for this offense.
55:29Pat McAfee:Can't wait to watch LaFleur with another year. I like how aggressive they've been under policy. Are the Packers going to win the whole damn thing again?
55:36Darius Butler:Maybe.
55:37Pat McAfee:Ty was a believer last year for six, seven, eight weeks. I forget how long the run was.
55:41Darius Butler:Up until Micah got hurt. You like Jonathan Gannon? You know, half of these down in the back of the golf? I got fired in my gut right now, so that should tell you all you need to know. That does.
55:49Pat McAfee:I don't know. I think the fire you have in your gut is a little different than what he's doing.
55:53Darius Butler:It might be. I mean, he's got— You had how many coffees this morning? Yeah, I had a couple. I had a couple. It was an early morning. It was an early morning. Was it just coffee or did you have? I snuck a bowl in there. Sugar-free. Four coffees. Sugar-free. No, I mean, well, technically it's not a coffee. I mean, it's an espresso. It's not the same thing. The study that came out, you can have like five to six coffees. Yes, you can.
56:17Pat McAfee:But I'm saying for Ty, the fire that he's feeling in his gut, I think it is different than the one that Gannon was looking for as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. I just don't know if they're the same fire. But you are a hungry lad.
56:27Darius Butler:Yeah, doubling down on Chick-fil-A after all that. That was certainly a choice. But we appreciate you doing that.
56:34Pat McAfee:Hey, go Pack Go. Go Pack Go. Saw the owner's meeting. Obviously, Ty wasn't able to make it because he had too much fire in the toilet as well. But we appreciate everybody showing up. Shniman, you're the absolute man. Good luck this season. Thank you for taking time with us. Thanks, fellas. Always a pleasure. Hey, tell your mom we said hello. Do you have the – how's the tat? Does it still look good or are we covering it up for camp? It's good. It's here.
56:56Darius Butler:Sick, bro. Oh, my gosh, dude.
56:58Pat McAfee:All right. Ladies and gentlemen, that's Matt Schneider. That's Schneider, baby.
57:01Darius Butler:That's Schneider.
57:01Pat McAfee:Hell yeah, Schneider. No Camp Onawana there from him.
57:05Darius Butler:Yeah. Are we 0-4? Yes. I didn't know we knew the ball. No, I think Caboli wouldn't know. Yeah, I think. Actually, was that? Can I see that picture again? Mm-hmm. Yeah, his son was on the show. Yeah, that's Caboli right there on the left. Yeah. All right.
57:23Pat McAfee:Ladies and gentlemen, let's wrap this up, shall we? Hey, let's go camping. Cowboys reporter for NFL Network, also the host of a relief pitcher on 105.3.
57:34Darius Butler:The fan.
57:35Pat McAfee:Ladies and gentlemen, might be frozen, Jane Slater. Thank you for joining us, Jane. How you doing? Doing good, guys. You can smell the football in the air. Oh, you certainly can. We could feel it like last week. Then we had some torrential downpours. but now that everybody's at camp, it's obviously exciting. Tell us about the Dallas Cowboys. Shoddy with another year as the head coach and running the offense. New D.C. Dak Prescott going to have the best year of his life. What is kind of the conversation around the Dallas Cowboys, who I think should be winning the NFC East? Wow. Okay. The conversation is it's too quiet around here for us.
58:13George Pickens, I was told, showed up to the bus early, got on the plane. He was ready to roll, so no holdout. I had already talked to him during minicamp and OTAs. I said, so you're not going to pull up with, you know, we saw this last year. Micah Parsons showed up, and then he had a back situation. Not going to happen. In fact, they did the physicals this morning, and every single guy that they were working off to the side during OTAs or minicamp, they're sort of slow playing. They're all ready to go. So normally we open up the presser at 11 o 'clock, and we sort of do a roll call. Who's going to be available?
58:45Every single one of them. And I've covered this team 14 years now. I can't remember a year like that, guys. So cautiously optimistic. This is a drama-free camp, but we know better covering this beat.
58:56Pat McAfee:I was about to say that on that note, we have a question about an actor, a mogul, a oil conglomerate, a natural gas, honey hole finder. Go ahead, D-Butt. Yeah, Jay, you've been covering for 14 years, and we watch football, so we've been forced to hear about the Cowboys and a lot of Jerry Jones, but haven't heard much from him this offseason. What do you know about that? Has that been intentional, him being kind of behind the scenes? He's like, what, do you have any more on that? Well, he's been to the World Cup and he's been on his Eugenia, the boat out in the Mediterranean. But look, they handled the George Pickens thing early.
59:27A lot of people thought this was going to be an issue, but George told us at camp. They came to him in good faith. They said, look, we're going to offer you the tag. There's not going to be a trade. We're not going to be talking about an extension. I think that sort of put things to bed. And I think the other thing that stood out to me this all season, guys, was not that they gave Shadi the reins, But they've empowered him with going and finding a guy like Christian Parker, who was in his notebook. They brought him in here first year as a DC. And then when you look at this roster, they addressed all those issues in the offseason.
59:58Guys that were leaders in this locker room that were sort of out of place, out of position with Christian Parker's vision for this scheme. They moved on for them. They got trade value. So there's going to be a lot of new faces here. But I think at some point you have to say the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and getting the same results. This year, at least for their part, you're not getting front office changes, boys, but you're at least getting the process looks a little different than years past.
1:00:22Pat McAfee:Jerry's handling business while he's just setting sail on the Eugenia. $235 million boat right there. Remember, he did do a draft selection from this particular boat during COVID. And I like that Jerry's on that boat going, I'm fine. This ain't bad, is it? We don't have chaos happening everywhere. Maybe we win another Super Bowl out here. And I appreciate the fact that Jerry Jones has done things his way. and I appreciate that he's handed it off to his family. I appreciate the fact that he's letting Shoddy kind of do his thing. We got a chance to be with Shoddy for a bit. I'll tell you what, last man standing there.
1:00:52Pat McAfee:That showed me a lot. He was with us. There wasn't a lot of people that were – I mean, I respect Shoddy. I like Shoddy. Feels like he's always been a player's coach. He always gets it. And I think the Dallas Cowboys love him. So I'm pumped to see if they're able to accomplish something that they haven't been able to do for a long-ass time. Tone has last question for you here, Jane.
1:01:11Darius Butler:Yeah, Jane, we talked about the new D.C., Christian Parker, and then obviously, you know, Rayshon Gary will be there. Quinn and Williams, those will be new faces there. But I wanted to talk about the first-round draft pick, Caleb Downs. How excited were the Cowboys that he fell to them at number, I think it was 12? And then how excited are they to get him in camp and use him? They love the guy. And if you look at some of these behind the scenes, because I know you're a big Cowboys fan, you can just look at how Christian Parker really drills down on the mechanics, and you don't need to do much of that.
1:01:39I talked to his father who played for the Giants. And he said when he was four years old, you know, his brother obviously plays for the Colts. You guys know that. And while he would be a, you know, peewee, popcorn or whatever you guys want to call it, he would be off to the side running his own drills. And during media day, they went looking for Caleb and he was in the film room already. And so I think they're going to get really creative with how they use them. You're going to see them in the nickel spot a lot. But I really think they need to figure out what they're doing with this cornerback rotation.
1:02:04A lot of people are talking about the Mike linebacker. But if you look at some of the personnel that they were very deliberate about bringing here to Dallas, you can have some variations. And then there's been some talk, maybe they think outside the box. And you've got Jalen Thompson, who wears that green dot as a safety. So I think that's what's going to be interesting to see here in practice. Obviously, with defense and offense, you don't get to see too many of the things. But I think what's going to really stand out for you is they've got those two practices against the Rams. And they've got one against the Saints.
1:02:33And in this case, the Rams have come here like four years in a row. They're going down there. So then we'll start seeing a little bit more of a better perspective of what we can expect. There's too many names on this roster to tell you what we expect.
1:02:44Pat McAfee:Are the Cowboys going to win it all this year? Maybe. Thank you, Cowboy Tone, for your support. Thank you, Jane, for everything. We appreciate the hell out of you. We'll see you down the road. That's Jane Slater. Let's stay in the NFC East. Huge breaking news. Jalen Carter has signed the largest deal in the history of defensive tackles. 106 million guaranteed 152 million over four years congratulations to him and the eagles as shefter reports this about carter did we know these deals were happening behind the scenes for jaylen carter we don't know but what we do know jaylen carter can take over any game yes he can is he baby rhino is what that is that what his nickname is that's a good thing to be called whenever you're a defensive tackle he gets to the eagles obviously a lot of georgia bulldogs on that defense he fits in immediately is a game record now he's getting rewarded shout to the eagles making this happen and shout to carter getting it done yeah it's a good deal good deal for him he's been taking care of business i would say off the field that was the main concern with jaylen carter going into the draft i think everybody saw him as the most talented player in that draft i forgot what number he failed to i think 10 around yes 10 right yeah now i remember rosenhouse his agent yeah yeah exactly he was like we're not meeting with teams outside of this number he's gotten there and he's done pretty much everything right.
1:04:00Jordan Davis as well. And we know when the Eagles are at their best, when defense in the league are at their best, it starts with those interior defensive linemen and he can be the best one in the league. So I think it's another great move by Harry Roseman. Another obviously great deal for Jalen Carter becoming the highest paid ever.
1:04:15Pat McAfee:He went number nine to the Eagles, which is why Drew Rosenhouse going in said, we're not, he's not going past that. That means he was told immediately, hey, if he's available nine, we're definitely going to take him because on a football field, always a menace since college. I mean, you just pick people up and move them. Now, would he be able to handle being a professional football player? He certainly has. He does choke sometimes as his spit comes out. Every once in a while.
1:04:37Darius Butler:Oh, that did happen, didn't it?
1:04:38Pat McAfee:But that's going to happen every once while you cough. He's a big man. A lot of congestion. You know what? My defensive tackle? Why not? I had a guy hit by the ref, and I was like, you know what? That's my guy. Can't be doing it. Can't be doing it. Not first play. Can't be doing it. All right, we're back on the other side. I'm happy we went camping. We learned a lot. Hell yeah. Next hour, we got a Orlovsky. Great. Yes. Great. See you then.

1:05:37Darius Butler:Welcome to the WNBA. Your vision narrows. You can't look away. Every assist, every stop, every logo three. From beyond the logo. Every did you see that moment. You bet. What records are going to be broken this season? All of it right here. Lock in. It's the WNBA on ESPN. All season long.
1:06:07Pat McAfee:Football. Football is obviously carrying the day. We just want camping. I feel like we really learned a lot about a lot of different teams and a lot of different storylines. We'll continue to try to do that as much as possible as we celebrate the hell out of sport and the NFL being all the way back. All 32 teams are in their training camps today. All physicals are taking place. All contractual negotiations are either putting a spotlight on them or halting altogether. Injuries are popping up, and now reality settles in for who's really going to be able to win a Super Bowl, like the Indianapolis Colts, and who's not going to be able to win a Super Bowl.
1:06:40Pat McAfee:Like?
1:06:43Darius Butler:Miami Dolphins. Uh, that's rude. Yeah, I think you can throw it in there. No, I just saw a look at you.
1:06:48Pat McAfee:Well, I was looking around. I was trying to figure out who I was going to hit. It's like toxic table, AP tone, anti-Schmidt. Pittsburgh Steelers feel like they're trying to go on a run. Green Bay Packers obviously should be in conversation late in the season. Nine-year NFL vet Darius J. Butler, he's got four teams. He does. Okay, so a couple of those teams are going to go on a run. But nonetheless, every team thinks that they can win. Every team feels that they can get to the big one. Every team thinks that this could be the year, that not only their coaching legacy, their player legacy, their franchise legacy, everything changes for them.
1:07:18Pat McAfee:Even the plus 50 ,000 Arizona Cardinals, they just paid a quarterback$15 million. Now, that's nowhere near what starting quarterback money is supposed to be, and their fans got mad that they paid that to the quarterback. They, in that building, are trying to find faith and belief that they can win the entire thing this year. Joe Thomas told us once, whenever we were talking to him, he played on the Cleveland Browns. There was one year there, two years maybe, they were 0-16. He said every year he came out of training camp thinking they were going to win a Super Bowl. And it's like us watching from outside in go, Joe, you're never going to win.
1:07:48Pat McAfee:You didn't win a game a couple times. I mean, you weren't ever going to win a Super Bowl. But in these training camps, the mindset has to become that we can go win every single game. It's got to be. The NFL's parity is so close. The fraction between a win and a loss is so damn small. It's like any of these teams piece it together, they could potentially go. Got to have a quarterback, though. That'll always be the storyline. Joining us now from an attic in Ohio is a man who's a college football national champion, Super Bowl champion, Ryder Cup winner, and he's in WWE 2K. You might see him this weekend at SummerSlam in Minnesota.
1:08:16Pat McAfee:Two-night affair, ladies and gentlemen, A.J. Hawk. A.J. Hawk. Yeah, you might – you never know. You might see me out there. Maybe me and the mic might be running in at some point. Oh, A.J. Hawk and the mic. Two Ohio kids coming out. Maybe you guys get in between Obafemi and Brock Lesnar. I wouldn't want to do that. I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't do that. Brock locked Oba in a cage last night as they walked around. That's crazy. It was crazy. Did you see what Roman Seth Rollins got into last night? Big time, I did. Seth Rollins, I think at this point, we can say he's a master baiter. I mean, he baited Roman.
1:08:49Pat McAfee:The original tribal chief, the official tribal chief, the only tribal. Look, Seth Rollins is reading the Jumbotron. He's baiting him. Roman's getting so lost in it all. He's, you know, champagne, hoppy, echo, lima. They did the entire thing. Took over the entire world. And Roman goes on to become the one. And then Seth Rollins is always knocking at the door. And Roman can't wait to get rid of him. He goes, you remember in Indianapolis whenever you hit me in the back with a chair and kind of ruined the entire shield? I'm going to do that same damn thing here on the Go Home Raw before SummerSlam.
1:09:22Pat McAfee:And the masturbator killed him. That's what he got him. He baited him, AJ. He masturbated him right into that ring and put his face stomped into a chair. That's what we got going on. Because he's a visionary. He's a revolutionary. He's the master of masturbators. That's the credits for coming? He is Seth freaking Rawlins.
1:09:48Darius Butler:He's a problem. Did you know Manti Dale taught him that on Good Morning Football this week?
1:09:51Pat McAfee:So that's the thing. Like, Seth Rawlins also sports media. Yeah. He's all over the place, yeah. Is he going to be able to be locked in enough to take on Roman Reigns? Feels like he's at the top of his game.
1:10:01Darius Butler:Yeah. Yeah.
1:10:01Pat McAfee:I mean, he just did this to Roman. Just, come on, buddy.
1:10:04Darius Butler:Don't call him the architect of destruction for nothing.
1:10:06Pat McAfee:Is that what they call him?
1:10:07Darius Butler:Yeah. That's what I call him.
1:10:08Pat McAfee:I didn't know. I didn't know he was the masturbator, though. Is that a new thing? I just watched it. He just masterly baited him right into that ring. Did he not? He did.
1:10:16Darius Butler:Since they moved to Netflix, he's been allowed to do that.
1:10:18Pat McAfee:With an eye. No. Tony. Actually, on Netflix, it's very fascinating what they do, actually. They blur things out and stop things. It's like, well, I thought that's why.
1:10:28Darius Butler:Yeah, can't we push the boundaries here?
1:10:30Pat McAfee:And they're like, absolutely not. Don't even think about it. Some of these countries are on this end. You say that word.
1:10:35Darius Butler:You're done. Punk and Cody, was that on Netflix? That was a house show. That was a house show.
1:10:41Pat McAfee:That was on X. They had a match? They do have a match this weekend. You can do whatever you want. Yeah, but Dan Heisen's lips are all over both the guys. I don't like that. Heisen's smooching both guys. It's almost like he's on both teams. I don't like that. You got to pick one side or the other. And he's out there smooching them with his face. And then last night, I don't know if you saw this, Heisen's out there with Joe Hendry. Because I believe in Dan Heisen. Okay. Ryan Garcia's out there playing a guitar. We didn't know he could do that. Ryan Garcia takes that guitar, hits Joe Hendry in the back.
1:11:18Pat McAfee:Yeah, last night. My Joe? Yeah, your Joe. One I believe in? Yes. That one. Boom. There he is. We just kind of missed it. But it did happen right before we put it on the screen. Here we go. Look at Ryan Garcia. We didn't know with the little mini houses. Okay, this is all last night, obviously. Joe Hendry with Ryan Garcia. You the man. You the man. Yes, I am. Yes, I am. Garcia says, how about this? I'm not actually playing at the tour, Joe. SummerSlam this weekend. Yeah, you're going to want to.
1:11:45Darius Butler:Guitars have a low survival rate in the ring. Got some receiver gloves on?
1:11:49Pat McAfee:I'll tell you what. There are a couple of guitars that have actually done pretty good staying together and hit people in the head. And then all of a sudden, it's not that one. That's a splinter. No, that's actually in there. Oh, okay. Sick. Sweet. Kendo stick. Don't love that one. Chair. Yeah, right. That's why Seth Rollins was like, yeah. I'm going to stomp his freaking head into this. Oh, cinema. Who taught Tom? Someone taught Tom Brady how to hit somebody with a chair. Remember he did that back at the fest?
1:12:19Darius Butler:It was terrible. He used a chair? That's your quarterback. Yeah, at the Fanatical Fest a couple weeks ago.
1:12:24Pat McAfee:He didn't use a chair. It's goofball. Oh, he did. He did. He got some guy with a chair. I don't know who it was, though. I think he just slapped, didn't he? Oh, no. He used the chair as well. He laid it in. He got somebody. You should get eyes on this chair. Yeah, you should. He may have killed the guy. The guy might be dead. Physicality.
1:12:38Darius Butler:See, it was weird, though, because he hit a guy this way, but the guy fell the opposite way. So I don't know how that actually works.
1:12:43Pat McAfee:Yeah, our bodies react to blunt force trauma. Who was the guy? We don't know. Whiplash. Who did he hit? One of our guys might know this guy, actually. Very well. The mic? Oh. Got hit with a chair? Yeah. How did I not? I did not see this at all. Tom Brady's swinging chairs at people at Goofball Fest? Yeah. Yes. Fresh out of the coffin. That's what they call it. Fanatics Fest. Sorry. You get it. He hit Gary Vee. Looks like everybody's goofing around. Yeah, Gary Vee would never. Yeah. The eyes in the back of his fucking head.
1:13:14Darius Butler:Yeah, Gary Vee's killing Tom if he's trying to swear. Do we have this video?
1:13:17Pat McAfee:Does it exist? It does not exist. I'm Tony. I don't think it exists. It might be too violent to watch on here, for real. Well, the most violent champion, Gunther, is... He's up this weekend, isn't he? Yeah, he's certainly getting after it with Nick Otis. Oh, that's right. General manager. Former TNA world champ. People forget about that. Nick Otis knows his way around a square circle. Yeah. I think he's going to learn about a chop pretty good. If I had to guess, just as somebody that's been in there, you know. Oh, yeah. What's going on here? Here we go. He's stalking his prey. Just got out of the casket.
1:13:47Pat McAfee:This is what the – Oh. There's another angle, too. It's a better angle. Tony, come on. Look, the guy's dead. He's still down. I think Tom Brady's going extreme. Yeah, exactly. We need Tom, Logan, Paul in a junkyard dog back alley brawl.
1:14:09Darius Butler:They should get the straps out. Do a strap mat. Is that Betty White swinging that chair? Tony. It's Tom.
1:14:15Pat McAfee:He's the greatest quarterback of all time. You saw it. Joining us now is a man who is a quarterback of all time. He is a quarterback of all time. More opportunities. Ladies and gentlemen, a little better opportunities too. Yeah. I agree with what he tweeted about himself earlier today. Ladies and gentlemen, the quarterback guru, the football pundit. The man who, if he wants you fired, he's going to say it on air. Ladies and gentlemen, Dan Orlovsky. Hey, Dan O. Dan O. How you doing? Oh, man, I'm good. How are you? What is that about? You know what it's about. Halfway through the season, this is coaching malpractice.
1:14:54Pat McAfee:What they are currently doing. Oh, jeez. Yeah, you know what it is. We're here already. Exactly. We're in Dan Olovsky season. Everybody's at camp. We're Dan Olovsky season. What an honor it is to be here. Happy Dano season, Dano. I know it hasn't started for a while for you. How's the offseason been? Obviously, there's massive storylines. We took one, two, three, four, five, six visits to different training camps in the first hour. Feels like there's obviously situations brewing all over the place. Aaron Donald, big storyline. Is that the big story for you? or what are you kind of keeping an eye out as we head into this particular season from a potential championship narrative that we need to keep an eye on?
1:15:35Yeah, I mean, I think Aaron's probably the biggest storyline. It feels still an unknown, even though it's certainly, I remember saying this the day after you were talking about your text with Aaron, he's coming back. I mean, I truly believe that when he texted you, just got to see if the fire comes back. You know, as an ex-athlete, like the fire never really leaves. So I think he's coming back when and how they're going to kind of build it is probably the biggest storyline. You know, I think that, you know, the teams that are legit contenders, I'd probably say there's eight to ten like real contenders.
1:16:11Which one of those teams makes a meaningful move? Is Max Crosby going to play with the Raiders for the whole year? If not, is somebody going to try to once again trade for Max Crosby? I'm a believer in Stefan Diggs on the field. So who's going to add Stefan Diggs? I know Shefty was talking about with Washington. Patrick and the health of his knee. Not only the health of his knee, but how well he plays and kind of what he looks like. So I think, you know, looking at this chart, if you told me Houston got good quarterback play, they would be my pick out of the AFC to go to the Super Bowl. but there's a big question mark of kind of like how CJ plays and really performs in his fourth year.
1:16:54So those are probably my biggest storylines, I'd say. Caleb, another year under Ben.
1:16:59Pat McAfee:Yeah, the AFC South is obviously the toughest division in ball. We understand that. Houston, Texas. You said Houston, Texas is about to win the AFC. So where do they play, Dan? The AFC South, thanks. So if the best team in the conference is in a division, that would be the best division, clearly. So I don't like to hear that because the Colts need to win. Chris Ballard actually came out today and said he won through an extension with the Colts because we need to win. He's on the last year of his contract. I never heard a more true statement, but I think getting Danny Dimes back is obviously good news.
1:17:28Pat McAfee:Let's talk about some of these younger quarterbacks that I'm excited to watch, and I think they have a lot of pressure on them. Go ahead, AJ. Yeah, Dan, what about Drake May, obviously, with New England? We know he was MVP candidate, almost won that thing last year. He brings in AJ Brown now, another huge weapon. I guess, what are you looking for from this Patriots offense? and you think they can even take another step. We know their defense is going to be legit, but what do you think of Drake May? Massive fan. He was a superstar last year. I think that the question marks with New England are, one, who replaces the production of Stephon Diggs in the meaningful snaps or situational football moments, red zone, third downs, and the middle of the field.
1:18:10I love the addition of A.J. I said this, AJ gives them that gronk type of one-on-one, puts you outside by yourself. You're bigger, faster, stronger than most other people. And that's going to have a part of their offense. But Steph was so big in situational football and in the middle of the field type of the feel plays. And who replaces? Is that going to be Romeo Dobbs? I'm a big Romeo Dobbs guy who comes over from Green Bay. He's got to stay healthy, obviously. But I think that finding the person that replaces that type of role is going to, because that's not AJ's role. It's just not. I would argue it's not necessarily the strength of Romeo's game.
1:18:52I think Romeo is a little bit more of an outside guy. He can work the middle field, more of a man guy than a zone guy for me. So I think, like, who kind of fills that void? It'll be a big deal. Their offensive line is going to have to play a lot better. But he'll absolutely be in the MVP conversation once again, Drake May.
1:19:09Pat McAfee:You tweeted over 7.5 touchdowns by Thanksgiving for A.J. Brown on DraftKings. If you're of age and agree to gamble responsibly and not like an asshole, we'd love for you to come join us on DraftKings. Available now in all 50 states. But once again, of age and not being an asshole. We're not getting super-duper rich off of this. We're just trying to make sports a little bit better. 7.5 does feel very low, Dano. Why do you think it's like that? Do they think they're not going to get on the same page? Think he's going to get hurt? Think there isn't going to be enough footballs in New England? Why do you think that is the case?
1:19:39I think one, people believe that he's taking this significant step back. A.J. Brown, I don't believe in that. I don't. A.J.'s never been, because I see the whole, like, yards of separation tweets that people put out. A.J.'s never been this massive separator. He's always been, like, in breakers, he's run away from people, but he's always used his big frame or down-the-field stuff to go make the plays. He's still plenty capable of that. I think of DeAndre Hopkins when he had some of his years, you know, post that that prime time in Houston. So plays like that. And I just so I don't think the big step back.
1:20:16And I think the second thing is, if you just know Josh McDaniels is offense and you know, the style of offense that he likes to play, the number one thing that I would tell you past game wise is it's so matchup centric. He is always chasing matchup A, matchup B, matchup C. And the quarterback's job is just to find the best matchup. And I think AJ is going to be that piece that is constantly moved around to try to create that A matchup. Not always going to happen, and they have other people that can hurt you if it doesn't. But there's just not, and D-butt knows, there's not a lot of guys that are just going to line up and go one-on-one versus AJ Brown down in the red zone and win.
1:20:56And so you're going to see it down in the red zone. They're going to get inside the 10. Again, AJ's going to have a route tag to every single play almost being like, hey, run the fade, run the stop, run the pylon, all that stuff. And I think he can still do that at a high level.
1:21:10Pat McAfee:AJ Brown has had seven touchdowns the last three seasons. So that was with the Philadelphia Eagles offense in which he was not happy. I mean, reading books on the sideline, making statements, he scores seven touchdowns the previous three seasons. We assume that that's only going to go up, especially if Drake May believes in him. And Drake May throws a perfect ball. So being able to hit back shoulders or in bucket is something that Drake, I think, takes a lot of pride in his young career. A.J. Brown can make those plays. And the head coach of the New England Patriots, whenever he was with the Tennessee Titans, he watched his offense go from 15th in the NFL to 28th after they traded away A.J.
1:21:43Pat McAfee:Brown. So I think Mike Vrabel has given quite a message to McDaniels, hey, let's get this guy. We get this guy the ball. That's why we won. Got him here. Everybody was assuming he was going to New England for a long time before he went up to New England. I think he's going to have a huge year, and I can already hear Connor yelling from one of those islands about all the people that we didn't talk about on the offense that he's excited about. How about Mac Hollins? Do you think that guy's going to make any plays? He's now barefoot walking around restaurants. I'm excited for the Patriots fans, who I was around a lot this past weekend.
1:22:14Pat McAfee:Super Bowl, bust for them all of a sudden again for every single season. Oh, that's right. Congratulations, Connor. That's awesome, man. Congrats, bud. He said, fuck you, Dan.
1:22:23Darius Butler:Oh, he's not there. That was a quick text.
1:22:25Pat McAfee:I don't think he said that. I mean, maybe we will relay. I'm surprised you can invite me.
1:22:29Darius Butler:Sitting in this seat.
1:22:30Pat McAfee:I'm actually kind of surprised as well. Would have been cool to see you there, especially because a lot of mass folks, a lot of mass holes there, and a lot of New England there. I had a blast with these guys. Different group of dudes than I've ever been around in my entire life. I had a really, really good time with these New Englanders, you know? Yeah, New Englanders, the Massachusetts people, the mass holes are, they're a unique kind of person. We've got a good friend who's certainly one. she's the best. She's an absolute lunatic in the best ways possible. She got mad this past weekend because her son was playing in a lacrosse tournament.
1:23:04And her son ended up playing against a Philadelphia or a Pennsylvania Philly team. And her son was playing for like Team Connecticut. And their uniforms were like pinstripes, almost like the New York Yankees. and the Philadelphia or Pennsylvania-based team was like the Rocky theme attached to the Sixers, and she was mad that they had Philly sports team-centric and hers son, who's a Boston kid, was New York-centric. He was like legit upset about it.
1:23:38Pat McAfee:Well, that's real. I mean, what do we have, the Boston Yankees here? I think she has a real gripe, especially with the way the Red Sox are Yankees. She was upset, dude. Yeah, I assume she let people know about it.
1:23:48Darius Butler:There are a lot of Yankee fans in Connecticut. Yeah. Bruce? No, he's from the Bronx. So what are we talking about? Pretty split. Especially in Fairfield County, it does kind of get split up by Hartford, you know.
1:23:59Pat McAfee:Fairfield Stags? Are we talking about the Fairfield Stags?
1:24:02Darius Butler:Fairfield Stags, mostly Yankee fans.
1:24:04Pat McAfee:Yeah, because we had Stags up. I was around a lot of Stags.
1:24:07Darius Butler:Stags up, yeah.
1:24:07Pat McAfee:I'll tell you what, I showed up maybe a little bit late to the rehearsal, and I didn't know we were wearing full sport coat suit to that thing. rolled in and we had khakis loafers across the board dress shirt blue blazer blue blazer across the barest ten of them every person there was ten of them i literally vineyard vines my face off they were like exactly they were lined up too so it was literally just looked like a fucking magazine cover of like some sort of khaki or boat thing and i walk over what's your name connor what's your name connor who's getting connor what's your name connor what's your name Rob.
1:24:41Pat McAfee:Jesus. Ain't no Rob. I'm never going to remember any of this. My name's South. Yeah, it was a great group, though. They were unbelievable, I'm going to say. They were a spectacular group. That's my first time ever being around that breed of what? And it was a pretty good time, I will say. It was certainly a pretty good time, and I appreciate New England more, but they all believe guess who is all the way back. And for good reason. Alright, let's pivot around the NFL. D-Bud has a question for you, Dan. Yeah, Dan, I know you got a lot of shit about, you know, your evaluation, I guess, of Fernando Mendoza.
1:25:14Been a number one pick. Obviously, the expectations are going to be there. You were kind of conservative with Drake May. Hey, wanting him to sit, be patient. What's the timeline that you see for Fernando Mendoza out in Vegas? I know they signed Kirk Cousins. Be a new offense, doing completely different things than he did in college. But what's the timeline that you expect to see out there in Vegas with Mendoza? Yeah, I would sit Mendoza until I absolutely had to play him. Um, so it's either that ownership says, get them on the field, which I would fight personally, or, you know, your, your season is back end of November and you want to start that final six game stretch with him.
1:25:52You know, D, but I was thinking about this cause I'm doing NFL live today with Adam Thielen, who's got a history with Clint Kubiak, new head coach of the Raiders.
1:26:00Darius Butler:Demon. And I was thinking about the, I've talked to so much about how it's going to be a completely different offense for Fernando than he's ever run before and it was only attached to the on the field stuff and then I was thinking today it's going to be a totally different world for him from the and for Clint because Clint Kubiak for his past couple years has been around some you know veteran quarterbacks that have experienced NFL offenses but just think about Fernando having to go and hear um eight to 12 to 14 word play call get it into the huddle what's a cow bro the guy's got a super brain yeah but it's still it's still being able to in this period of time five seconds hear it communicate it clearly um and pat i'm telling you there's things in the huddle when like i'm telling you this receiver you're going to be aligned somewhere different than you were last week the shift the motion the timing of it the cadence like i i need people to understand this and you hire clint kubiak in part because of the the intelligence element of his offense like you love the way he calls his plays and calls a game you you don't want to take that away from him too early because he's going to be playing a younger quarterback i'm not saying this is impossible when i you asked me like how long but i would wait i would wait till i would think that fernando can operate pretty heavily all of my offense because that's part of the reason why
1:27:37Pat McAfee:you've hired me got it got it i understand what you're saying but what we are trying to tell you is you have kind of um how would i say it you you have i think you have showcased that you don't really respect fernando for what we respect fernando for through the evaluation process Bit of a hater. I think people would say that. Handicapping, and there it is. You've been handicapping Fernando in a way that we don't appreciate. So that is just a differing of opinion between us. You saying, you know, just 15 words. It's like Fernando just graduated, I think, with honors from Cal, okay? And he views everything like it's a...
1:28:10Yeah, but, dude, I know a lot of dudes who played quarterback that were smart that they couldn't go do it on the field.
1:28:15Pat McAfee:Yeah, win a Heisman in a national championship, obviously, and carry Indiana to a title. I mean, I know a lot of those dudes as well. But I'm just saying this is, once again, you having your draft thoughts kind of creep in. Because you know what I'm saying to him? Put his ass in there week one. Week one. Why? Because he's a dog, dude. Let me ask you this. Let me ask you this. Let me ask you this. Let's have a legit conversation. I love Kirk Cousins, okay? Have you seen Fernando and Kirk Cousins? Fernando's looking at Kirk Cousins like this. This is another thing you discount. The guy is a giant.
1:28:46Pat McAfee:No, I'm not discounting anything. You discount everything, this guy. He's not going to be able to remember. He's not going to be able to do this. You live in an assumptive world. Let's pretend that we're in the Raiders. And we sit there and say, man, we really like this kid. Clint, how much of our offense can we go week one and operate? And he says, right now, with all the things that we want to do, if we want to play Fernando, we're going to run 40 % of our playbook.
1:29:11Darius Butler:Figure out a way to play. Are you going to put him out there?
1:29:14Pat McAfee:Well, why are you putting him? Fernando knows 100 % of the playbook by the time he is ready to play. You know that. I saw Andrew Luck check to something in his first offseason, and I think I would compare Fernando's brain. Andrew Luck ran his brain maybe, but Andrew Luck literally ran one of the more intricate offenses in college football. Harbaugh would give him three or four plays in the hut at a time, multiple shifts, multiple motions. Okay, so I didn't see Noakowski in motion every single play. I mean, what are we even talking about here? handled every single defense with flying colors. I understand what Dan is saying.
1:29:54Fernando, obviously he played at an elite level, but the simplicity of the offense that he ran in college. It was like his run game. It was RPOs. It was back shoulder phase. He did other things. But to Dan's point, I get Andrew ran a pro-style offense. He was obviously the son of a quarterback. So it is a difference of intelligence, football intelligence. Now, I do think Fernando has football intelligence, but can you go into week one and he knows 75 % of the playbook or we can operate at even 60 % of the playbook? I'm putting Fernando out there. I'll probably have a conversation then. Before I'm putting Kirk Cousins.
1:30:31I don't disagree with that, D-Butt. Like if we sit, if we're again in the organization and we say, hey, this, we think this guy can run 75, 80 percent of our playbook from the personnel groupings to the situational football stuff to the shifts in motions. He's got the timing of the footwork down. We think he's mentally tough enough to deal with some of the obstacles he's going to deal with. Then it's a different conversation. You asked me what I thought was. Now you're thinking he knows 30 percent of the offense.
1:30:58Pat McAfee:So you're just immediately discounting what this guy's brain is. So you have a narrative, okay? You have a narrative. Whoa. Jeez. I don't know what you're doing down there. Maybe Seth Rollins isn't. You know, maybe he is. Maybe Seth Rollins isn't. But what I'm saying, Dan, is you need to stop viewing Fernando. Don't do it again. We already saw it. It's already been clipped. Yeah, I just thought of that. That was a big explosion to him. As soon as you say something about. I think what AI is. Yeah, anybody. Josh Allen. Oh, my God. Here's the hit. We knew it. And I know you just want to hit yourself in the face because I'm not meaning to sound like what I'm sounding like is what you're trying to say.
1:31:40But it's like, let's just talk about Fernando. No, you are making me sound that way. Oh, okay.
1:31:46Pat McAfee:What big game has he played? You know, that was on us, not on you for asking that question, of course. But, you know, accountability is a good thing. You know, point one figure, you got three-pointing back. Nonetheless, I think I believe so much in Fernando. I just think like, okay, whatever he needs to do, he's going to do. Like, that is what it is. So I think he's going to learn the offense. I don't think the brain is going to be a problem. I think the way he views defenses is in a professional manner. Now, will he be able to have it immediately? I think yes. I think he will. There's obviously going to be rookie growing pains through it all with him and Kubiak.
1:32:16But, like, I'm a believer.
1:32:17Pat McAfee:I'll be interested to see. I'm a believer. And he's this big, Dano. Yeah, I know he's a mountain of a man. I get that. He's a big dude. Clint, a couple years ago, was with, I believe, Brock Purdy when he had to step in for Jimmy G. Was he there? Was Clint Kubiak there? Maybe. Minnesota. But I think he was there with Brock as a young kid, so he should have a feel for, like, at least the baseline of what you want a young kid to sound like and operate like in practice to say, yeah, I think this kid's got a chance to get on the field sooner than maybe we anticipated. it yeah but if he starts week one does great i mean you just kind of you know next draft season we're gonna have to revisit it you know and you know and you know that so that's what you're doing here that's what you're doing here and i respect it you you're the one going double grip on it yeah you know it wasn't me doing that no no let's remember that whenever that hits the internet yeah that did that should be good the internet's the greatest man they've been pretty mean to me for a while yeah it's up and down but they are so talented yeah it is a talented bunch ride the wave different sectors funny just like wow these funny people these nerds are pretty clever over here this this must be like what the reddit ride is like there's a lot more mean than funny people on the internet but the funny ones do stand up yeah but mean and fun i was gonna say there are some
1:33:35Darius Butler:that are very mean and very funny yeah that too and you can't help it just go like combination
1:33:39Pat McAfee:yeah that's a lethal combination actually but for you as you're reading it about yourself you can't Apple be like, I better go for those days. They really tied that one together pretty good right there.
1:33:52Darius Butler:I saw a lot of those yesterday. I can't remember who it was about, but I saw a lot yesterday.
1:33:55Pat McAfee:You're going to have to mute this account, okay? You're going to have to mute this particular account, just because I can't be reading this every day of my life. But this one, certainly respect. Now, let's talk about talking about things. There's an AFC North team that obviously has a guy that we all assume will be able to win a Super Bowl. Hasn't yet. Go ahead, Tone.
1:34:11Darius Butler:Yeah, Dan, I feel like there's been a lot of talk about a lot of teams, but I feel like there's been zero talk about the Baltimore Ravens. And I don't know if it's because there's a new coach and Harbaugh is gone or because they had very much of a down year last year where, you know, the O-line wasn't great, which in return, Lamar was banged up. He wasn't great. The defense has missed some pieces. Why do you think that no one is talking about the Ravens? Because the last three, four years, they have been perennial Super Bowl favorites going into the season. yeah i mean i think part of it is because they have earned the burden of not having us care that much about what they do in the regular season yeah and that's not necessarily fair but they've been so good for so long i remember when dak prescott kind of got into this world as a player where he was just playing at a high level year after year after year and then everyone was like okay, what is he doing in the postseason?
1:35:05I think Baltimore is into that conversation just as a football team. I think Buffalo is in that conversation as a football team as well, where it's like, we know you're probably going to be somewhere between 11 and six, 12 and five, somewhere in that world. You're going to be more than likely in the playoffs and you've been so good. Your quarterbacks have been so great, yet you've fallen short some way or another. And we just want to see what you do in the playoffs. So I think that's part of it is like, You know you're going to be a good football team. You're going to be playing into January. And then it's a little bit of the, you know, the Jesse Minter is more of a quiet personality.
1:35:43The Harbaugh name is actually an unbelievably dominant name in the football circle. Jesse Minter is a little bit more quiet personality, I think. And so it hasn't created a ton of off the field headlines. Lamar has been there all offseason. to my knowledge, that hasn't necessarily been a part of his offseason operation over the past couple of years. I think there's some question marks on their football team. They lost Isaiah Likely. They've got two young receivers that they draft that have to be really big players. The interior of their offensive line is going to be brand new. Does Matabike play?
1:36:19So they're really good. But I think that there's some question marks. We have to see how it plays out this year. And I think it's just going to take Lamar some time to learn this very new offense.
1:36:31Pat McAfee:Camp on Awana, we hold you in our hearts. And when we think about you, it makes me want to. This thing came apart. Get it right and pay the price. He knew it, though. He was going to be a big deal. He knew it.
1:36:51Darius Butler:In a sunny Californian suburb, one family's home is unusually quiet. When detectives walked into that house, they said that it was like time just stood still. It's 2010, and the McStay family is nowhere to be found. Inside the home, no clear answer where the family could have gone. Husband, wife, and two children all gone, like, poof, disappeared. The search for the McStays quickly captures the nation. But for years, the search for answers only brings more questions. Who's ever heard of an entire family going missing? A family of four doesn't just drop off the face of the earth with no contact.
1:37:28Darius Butler:Is this a family on the run? Or is the truth far more sinister? From ABC Audio in 2020, this is What Happened to the Mixed Days. Coming August 11th, wherever you get your podcasts. Or subscribe to 2020 True Crime Plus on Apple Podcasts for ad-free episodes, early access to new episodes, and so much more.
1:37:54Pat McAfee:Yeah, that's pretty good, Dano. Pretty good out of you, Dano. Does AJ do it? AJ definitely. AJ's the one who sent this photo in, actually. Yeah, this is my era. I love that. I didn't notice Caboli was in there. Good era. Yeah, Caboli's down there on the left. We see him. He would go on to become a correspondent for the Pittsburgh Steelers. That's right. Wait, that's a real thing? Yeah, he was right in the middle of the other picture. That's Mark Caboli. Yeah, right there on the flagpole. He played donkey lips. Yeah. Are you guys being serious or am I just falling for something here? Dead serious.
1:38:23Pat McAfee:What are you talking about? The other picture you can see better. Yeah, get the other one up, and then we'll be able to showcase it a little bit better. You can see the aging of him.
1:38:31Darius Butler:There he is in the blue.
1:38:31Pat McAfee:There he is in the blue. Now put Caboli up. Can we find a photo of Caboli? He has donkey lips.
1:38:41I know Dan would know it.
1:38:43Pat McAfee:Yeah. I mean, it's a great show. Of course Dan knows that. You know what I mean? It's a bummer how many people. Maybe it is just the East Coast. I'm from the Midwest. I watch that too. Doug. God's watch Doug. Yeah. Doug. Patty Manez. All right. The beats. You said the AFC North, obviously, a little bit quiet. A lot of changes. Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be very confident with where they're at, seem to be very happy. Baltimore Ravens, excited to see what Lamar Jackson does in a new environment, sane building. And if we know anything about Bashadi, he's got it right. You know, Bashadi's got it right over there.
1:39:17Pat McAfee:Let's head over to the other north, shall we? It feels like the winter might be coming. Go ahead, Ty.
1:39:21Darius Butler:Yeah, Dano, it certainly seems like the NFC North is one of the few conferences where you could really make an argument that, I mean, I suppose you could say maybe the Vikings will win. I don't believe that. But you could really make an argument that any of the Lions, Packers, or Bears could win the division. What's your take on this division this year? I'll go first. I'll give you my pick. I think this is going to be the year the Packers put everything together. Really? It's not a homer pick. Okay, we got Micah going to be 100 % come week six. Jordan Love, finally they're going to take the reins off him.
1:39:53Darius Butler:Maybe he wins MVP this year. What? I think so. I think this is the year.
1:39:58Pat McAfee:Why this year are they taking the reins off first, maybe the previous?
1:40:00Darius Butler:Well, because I think they're finally tired of all the stats coming out after the season about how good he is and he's in the top five, everything. And then in the playoffs, for whatever reason, they let him throw the ball like eight times. And then it's like, do you trust the guy? He's really good, but you don't really trust him to kind of just go out there and play.
1:40:15Pat McAfee:Who's going to be in the more wideout? Yeah, is LaFleur in the hot seat then if he won't call the plays for Jordan Love? I don't know. damn is he uh uh he will be yes if if if they don't i mean we all know the expectation when you trade for michael parsons and give away your first round picks you kind of raise the standard even greater in the expectation level i'm i'm with you i would if i had to pick a team today it would be green bay i think the offensive line is going to play better yep matthew golden has to take a step forward tucker craft was becoming one of the best tight ends in football he's going to come back from the ACL injury.
1:40:51I think the defense is going to be very good. I think the addition of Cissé and the secondary is going to matter. Here's my thing that I wish people truly started to understand a little bit more. I want to phrase this the proper way. I think we, as a football community, put way too big an emphasis on quarterbacks throwing interceptions, having this unbelievably negative impact on their ability to play at a high level and wins and losses the guy who led the league in picks last year won the super bowl and i'm totally aware of how good jsn was and the defense was dominant but i think if you have a very good defense and talented defense and jonathan gainer again and taking over as defensive coordinators a little bit of a lunatic in a good way and it's going to be bombs over everything like here it comes pressure after pressure after pressure if we're going to play defensive football like that you gotta stop worrying if your quarterback throws an interception in the first quarter and and then the reins come in and the handcuffs go on i i really believe for these ultra talented guys it's got to be and i said this last year with jordan and we saw at times like dude if you throw a pick i don't care we have to test defenses more we have to try to be you're talented enough to make those challenging throws that's why we pay you if I didn't want you to make the challenging throws I'd pay a quarterback that was just good and so I think like the whole football world puts oh my gosh this quarterback who cares it's a pick defense get it back for us I'm not saying reckless but I need Jordan Love and Matt LaFleur to enter into the the marriage of we're going to be very aggressive all the time.
1:42:41Pat McAfee:Yeah, the no risk it, no biscuit type situation. And then obviously the lack of turnovers was one of Aaron Rodgers' biggest things. So I think the Green Bay Packers forever have been very conscientious of controlling the ball, especially if you have it. But Ty would probably follow up and ask, is that LaFleur making the play calls or is that Jordan Love deciding not to do it because he's being told not to risk anything? I think that's probably what Ty's immediate follow-up would be there.
1:43:05Darius Butler:Definitely, because he only threw six interceptions last year, and I think part of it might be the, like, hey, that was how Rodgers killed people. He has the best touchdown-to-interception ratio in the history of the NFL. But, like, he wasn't turning the ball over a bunch. So is that, like, them really harping on him? Like, hey, Jordan, we can't be turning the ball over. Our defense is playing so well. We just, let's go score points. Or is that him just playing cautious out there and not wanting to throw interceptions? Yeah, I would, this is a guess. I would imagine it's a little bit of both. You know, I'm not in those rooms to tell you exactly how they're communicating and philosophically how they're choosing to play.
1:43:39I understand the Aaron point. It was a different era, though. Aaron's offense that he played in was a West Coast. It was ball distribution. They would march the length of the field, get into the red zone, and he would just destroy you. This Green Bay offense is a little bit more trying to create explosives from the play action pass game. he's not Jordan nearly as mobile and deadly as Aaron was when he was mobile and so I don't know you know why for a young man that is as talented as he is um but I think when and if they're fully healthy there has to be a little bit of a philosophical shift to and it's all situational as well I don't we don't need to come out in the first quarter and just throw into double coverage I'm not saying that, but when you're watching tape and, you know, it's, we, we've got a shot early on to Christian Watson and it's, you know, a, a 50, 50 type of ball or an even leverage type of ball.
1:44:42Let's take our shot, dude. Like if we're watching tape and you tell me, I just didn't feel see like, I don't need that. It's first and 10 you're thrown into triple coverage. That's reckless. That's reckless. That's a non-negotiable. But there are examples where you sit there and say, why don't you take that one? Like, why don't you throw that one? It's first and 10. We call the shot play. We get the defense. I didn't love the leverage, but we got the leverage we want. Our other guys got to earn their scholarships.
1:45:10Pat McAfee:Yeah, and Jordan's a hooper. You know, he's a player. You can tell. He's not getting there, so let's just let him. Hey, let's get loose out there, Jordan. You can make every throw. Not that one you just did against Carolina. That was bad. Especially if Rico Dowdle is going to go crazy like he did against your defense in that Carolina Panther game. Rico won. You came in here and said, is Rico Dowdle the best football player to ever play football after that particular weekend? I forgot about the triple coverage interception that happened there.
1:45:34Darius Butler:That was the birth of the, hey, listen, the Panthers are a good football team. Because they did not look great up to that point. The Packers had, and they took a tool. That was a great football player.
1:45:44Pat McAfee:Okay, so Ty's got the Packers. Dan's got the Packers. NFC North, AJ, who are you picking? Oh, I got the Packers all the way. especially with Micah coming back. At minimum week six, we said, right? Schneidman said. It possibly comes back earlier than that. Week four, I guess this nine-month no-field ACL injury rule that the Packers have that we just learned of today is something that they're... Me too. You really? Yeah, I didn't know of that. Luckily, I never tore my ACL, so maybe that's why I do not know that. But they are historically very conservative and actually really, really care and take care of their players.
1:46:15So it's a good thing.
1:46:15Pat McAfee:So September 30th would be nine months and one day for him to return, which would be before week four. But they think a couple weeks after nine months, one day, to get back, Schneidman told this earlier, he said week six, which is Sunday Night Football against the Cowboys. And that's a lot of games left. Week six, there's a lot of games left. You can still do a lot of damage and hopefully be a part of the most important games at the end of the season, as opposed to last year where you lost your biggest piece on defense, who was almost defensive MVP. So AJ's got the Packers. Orlovsky's got the Packers.
1:46:45Pat McAfee:Ty's got the Packers. Tone, who do you have in the NFC North? Idiots. I like the Packers. Okay. What? Tone has the Packers. Let's go to nine-year NFL vet. Darius J. Butler, who do you have in the NFC North? You know what? I think they're running back. I think the king of the North returns. I think Caleb takes another jump. And the opposite of what he's saying about Jordan Love, I think Caleb, everybody's saying, hey, take the singles, take the layups, which you do have to do that. You've got to make the routine throws in the NFL. But keep being special. We've seen glimpses. We saw it on every level, playoff teams.
1:47:18Now I'm worried about the defense. They feasted on turnovers last year. That usually doesn't go year by year. They lost a lot of production as well, but I got the Bears running it back.
1:47:26Pat McAfee:Okay, so four Packers, one Bears. Dan, you wanted to follow up on the Chicago Bears, it sounded like. So here would be my pushback to D-butt. I think that the trend, because the turnover thing, I was going to make that point, but also the trend with what we're seeing out of the really dominant defenses in the NFL is truly going back to your defensive line dominating. We've seen that with Seattle last year. We saw with Philly the year before, shoot in the AFC. You're thinking about a team like the Denver Broncos that have one of the, if not the best defensive lines in ball. I just don't think Chicago's defensive line is at that dominant level.
1:48:08I think Detroit's has the chance to be. I think Green Bay's has the chance to be. I think Minnesota's has the chance to be. I don't see Chicago's having that D-but.
1:48:17Pat McAfee:Grady Jarrett, Gravon Dexter, Gallimore, Montez Sweat, Austin Booker. My great old paper. Go get Vita. Vita Veja potentially available. But the weapons, those young weapons, I think Rome makes a jump. I like Luther. He came on late. And Colston Loveland is my favorite young tight end. I love Brock. I love Tyler Warren, but I think Loveland scratched the surface. last year. I think he's like a 1 ,200, 1 ,400 yard guy. Best tight end in the division. Four Packers, one Bears pick. Let's go to the odds-on favorite Detroit Lions fan, Evan Foxy in the back. How do you feel about nobody picking MC, DC, and the Lions?
1:48:57Pat McAfee:What an abnormality for this normal kind of conversation about the Lions. Even last year heading in. The Lions are going to be great. Don't worry about it. The year before that, Lions are going to be great. Don't worry about it. The year before that, Lions are going to be great. Don't worry about it. now there's no conversation, and the sportsbooks have him as the odds-on favorite. Four Packers, one Bears pick just on this stage, Foxy. We've been forced to watch and learn everything about the Lions. What do you think that's all about, Fox? Yeah, I mean, I get it. I would say I'm concerned about the defense.
1:49:24Pat McAfee:Kirby Joseph's knee, no one knows what the hell is going on with that. He's on the PUP. Brian Branch tore his Achilles. He's on the PUP.
1:49:32Darius Butler:That's worrisome. And also, Teron Arnold, he's cut from the team. So our secondary has a bunch of guys like me out there right now. That is concerning. but let's keep in mind Jared Goff, St. Brown, Jameel, Penesul, Jameer Gibbs, people are expecting to have 2 ,000 yards this year. Let alone, let's go to the defense. We still have Jack Campbell, we still have Aiden Hutchinson. We have so many studs on this team and I actually, I don't mind that you guys didn't pick us. I'm actually going to take this clip and send it to the Lions as motivation and we'll win the division.
1:50:01Pat McAfee:No way it gets into the locker room. Who's calling the pressure the Lions now? I don't care about the OC either.
1:50:07Darius Butler:I meant to say that, but I do not care about the OC. He's 14 years old. Jared Goff is so good. It doesn't matter. Dan will take over. Not Dan Orlowski. Dan Campbell will take over the play call if we need to. Yeah, it worked.
1:50:17Pat McAfee:Great. Man. They scored points last year. Missing Ben Johnson. Yeah, they were averaging like 35 points or something like that last year.
1:50:24Darius Butler:They scored a lot of points last year. Jared Goff had a great year. St. Brown had a great year. J-Mo had over 1 ,000 yards. It's just the big thing they've got to fix because that defense isn't so good is you've got to be able to run the ball and control the clock so the defense stays off the field.
1:50:36Pat McAfee:Yeah, well, the defense has just got to get better maybe. I agree. Maybe defense needs to figure it out. Have Evan Foxy Roman in the back there. I need to make him look like Ed Reed there, Shep. Come on, Shep. Let's go, Shep. Coach him up. Yep. All right, well, we appreciate you, Dano. Anything that we didn't hit that – where's Vita Van going? Colts? I hope – I mean, for Tampa's sake, I hope they don't let him out of the locker room. I think Tampa's a contender. I think their roster is one of the better in the NFC. So I think you do everything you can to try to keep them. if I were teams that should call, I wrote this down yesterday, I think Buffalo should call, I think Baltimore because you don't know what's going to happen with Matabike should call I think the Chargers should call, I think Chicago should call, San Francisco, Detroit those would be the teams that I think at least have to make the call but I would imagine Tampa's trying to keep them.
1:51:25Pat McAfee:Yeah and you just didn't say the Colts because I already said that and I appreciate you doing that thank you so much Dano for joining us it's almost Dano season, now we should see you on TV every day right going forward? Nope. No, man, it's still summertime. It's still summertime, dude. I got a couple weeks left. A couple weeks left, family time. I will probably pick it up here in a week, yes, but not every day till September. Are you employed by ESPN still? Yes, sir. Not work. Is it this guy's fault? Could be. Unbelievable. Dude, don't JJ walk me, man. See you in two weeks, dude, ladies and gentlemen.
1:51:57Pat McAfee:Dan Rolovsky. Yeah, Dano. Yeah, Dano. Just did a hard time there, 30-something minutes. Yeah. See you in three weeks. Is that that guy's fault?
1:52:04Darius Butler:Get your feet up, Dano. Takes a long time to load up the Dan wagon, apparently.
1:52:08Pat McAfee:Yes, it certainly does, especially with that good of a tan. Yeah. Yeah, we can see it, Dan. It's written all over your face, actually, how good of a tan the Orlovskis have been having. On that note, shout out to Madden Orlovsky. Shout out, man. Hell yeah. Should have brought that up. Definitely should have brought this up. I mean, he was sitting right here. It was Madden Orlovsky, obviously, Dan Orlovsky's son, one of his many children, I would say, is autistic, is an artist, and obviously put together some merch to support, I believe, the Philadelphia Eagles Autism Foundation and everything like that.
1:52:39Pat McAfee:So, anything we can do to support. That makes me cry every single year. Because Dano, watching Dano, you know? And the way he talks about being able to provide something to him that he obviously gets fulfillment from. It's special. So, shout out to Dano. Shout out to the Eagles. They paid Jalen Carter today. What a massive deal that was. Offensive tackle also got paid today from the... I didn't see it. Is that the Vikings? Vikings. Brian O 'Neal. Brian O 'Neal, four-year,$96 million contract extension. Who's he blocking for? Has not been publicly announced. Adam Thielen said this is Kyler Murray's job to lose yesterday on NFL Live, pretty much.
1:53:14Pat McAfee:That feels like a big statement if we're going to take anything away. But$96 million, four-year deal. Brian O 'Neal locked in. Congrats to the Vikings. Now, remember, they move on from general manager.
1:53:25Darius Butler:Yes.
1:53:26Pat McAfee:Now we believe, is this a KOC-led team? Is KOC kind of doing both jobs potentially? Is he getting more power? Is he staying the ship? Whatever the case, we love what that Vikings team could be. If they get great quarterback play, they can go on a run. I mean, that is a team that can certainly do it. That NFC North is packed out. We have about a minute and a half here before a hard out. We're going to go around the boys and say what their favorite thing of the offseason was. Now the training camp has officially started and we're all the way back into the NFL. Tone Diggs, Cowboy supporter. What was your favorite thing that happened pre-NFL training camp this offseason?
1:53:59Darius Butler:Big Mike McCarthy getting hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers, coming home, back to Greenfield, restoring the organization to greatness it deserves.
1:54:08Pat McAfee:Okay, so your thing is still a football thing, okay? Ty, no, it doesn't have to be. He said a lot about it. Ty, favorite thing in the offseason that got us through here? I'll stick with, you know what, no, I'm not going to do football.
1:54:19Darius Butler:Favorite thing in the offseason was a long time ago, but, I mean, Iowa made it to the Elite Eight. It was unbelievable. It was a long time ago. Holy shit. McCollum. Yeah, exactly. Ben McCollum. So, you know, go Hawks, baby.
1:54:30Pat McAfee:Dbutt, nine-year NFL vet. Favorite thing that happened before we got back to training camp here? Wouldn't I be football? I'd be family. Spending some great time with family. Start week. A bunch of us have kids. My oldest last summer. Going to college. Love you, Maya. Be good. You spoke for all of us there, obviously. AJ, favorite thing that happened in the offseason? Made to mention yesterday, I'm actually a fan of the Nickel City jerseys for the Buffalo field. No, he's not.
1:54:52Darius Butler:What a jerk.
1:54:52Pat McAfee:He is not.
1:54:53Darius Butler:Dead serious. I actually kind of like him. Training camp.
1:54:56Pat McAfee:And for me, my favorite thing was getting a chance to celebrate life alongside all of you. We'll continue to do that digitally. Your sports center continues in three minutes. Goodbye. Okay, no World Cup mention.
1:55:06Darius Butler:Oh, yeah. Holy shit. Easy coming. Oh, my God. It's over. It's over. What part would it have been for us as Americans? Like, early on in the stages where we thought we were really good?
1:55:19Pat McAfee:I think somebody could have just said, you know, could have just said, like. World Cup fever. Right before the Belgium game, once that red card guy, you know, Balogun, they upflow, Balogun got back in there. We were on top of the world, huh? We got our guy. We're going to beat the shit out of Belgium. It was back at 250. He stopped right there. That was the end. Yeah, we – That UNC drive against TCU. Oh, that first one. They're going to be chasing that forever. Who knows who's going to be there. And, boy, they have not relented on Lombardi over there. At all. Hey, did you notice? People hate this guy.
1:55:50Pat McAfee:I had no idea. I genuinely did not because he comes on our show. He's got an answer for everything. Guy's been around. Exactly. Loves us. That might be a part of the problem. I don't know.
1:56:01Darius Butler:We got people saying that, you know what, he should be picking up his paycheck with a ski mask on. I saw that. Yeah, terrible. Come on. Who was that? Well, Bruce Feldman tweeted it from a long-form podcast that he did. Again, I was shocked yesterday, and I thought maybe, okay, one day this happens. Obviously, it's going to be big news. come tomorrow, we're not going to be talking. Agreed. Boy, I tell you what.
1:56:25Pat McAfee:People slept on it.
1:56:26Darius Butler:Yeah, they did. They did, and they had more ammunition, more firepower. And, yeah, outside of us, I don't think Lambo has that many fans, and I just don't get it.
1:56:35Pat McAfee:We have no idea what the investigation is going to overturn. We'll obviously continue to cover it, but, boy, there's been a lot of people that have been celebrating it. He'll be exonerated. That's my guess. Me too, B-Bud. Okay. Everybody's going on the record with that. And a part of some of the shit they're putting, I don't like that. I don't like it. Like what? It was a good song. I don't like it. That's all I would say. Well, I think he thought he was maybe getting a link to send somebody and say this ain't good for society. Instead, he hit the... Oh, yeah, I did see that. I did see that. He was trying to send that to maybe a prayer group.
1:57:06Pat McAfee:He's old. I actually reposted himself too before. You have? The new butt, yeah. Listen to the song. When it first came out. It's a good song. Button, button. Okay, I didn't know where it was. But I mean, it's illegal like a butt. I mean, come on.
1:57:22Darius Butler:It was nice.
1:57:24Pat McAfee:Anyways, whatever the case, we will continue to follow. This is obviously something that is involving an investigation happening around there and reports being filed. And we obviously, but boy, I'm telling you, that's been an eye-opener for me. And I'm like, whoa, I didn't know that. Because he was coming on our show. Yeah. And always delivered for us.
1:57:44Darius Butler:Always.
1:57:46Pat McAfee:A lot of other people saying, yeah, we're about sticking to deliveries. Exactly. All right. Keep our ear to the ground on all of that. NFL training camps are back. College football is right around the corner. Hell yeah. WNBA is starting the second half of their season. Let's go. Fever play tonight. Against Seattle. MLS has soccer taking place. And they're selling tickets still, Gumpy. Soccer fever is still taking place in America, right?
1:58:09Darius Butler:All-star skills competition tonight. They got the goalie wars. It's always a banger.
1:58:13Pat McAfee:Oh, man, I was supposed to compete in this year's one. Maybe next year. I actually might watch that. The goalie war is the best thing they do. Yeah?
1:58:20Darius Butler:It's like a skills competition. It's pretty cool.
1:58:22Pat McAfee:Two nets, 20 yards away from each other. Ball, goalies. You can punt it against each other. You can shoot it. You can score, and you're competing against each other. Goalie on goalie? Yeah.
1:58:33Darius Butler:You can throw it if you want. You can do whatever you want.
1:58:35Pat McAfee:Yeah, I think it's like 20 yards apart, right? That's pretty cool. It's great. The mic should host it. The mic should host it. I assume the mic will be there. I assume the mic will be in between the boys.
1:58:44Darius Butler:Yeah.
1:58:44Pat McAfee:Saying, goalie wars! This is awesome! And then he'll say, the mic out! And then he'll drop the microphone. They'll say, sir, we got to get the microphone out of the way of the goalie wars because this is in the middle of the fucking field. The mic doesn't get the mic. That'll probably be what takes place. But the goalie wars is awesome. It is really cool. Then they have a skills challenge as well where they're trying to hit stuff, pass stuff, do things. Skills challenge soccer can be sweet and normally is, pretty sweet happening tonight. Is Messi competing in this?
1:59:15Darius Butler:No, he's on his 21-day break after the World Cup that players have to take.
1:59:19Pat McAfee:Have to like the Packers got him.
1:59:21Darius Butler:So they can't suspend him for a game this year because he missed it last year.
1:59:24Pat McAfee:Okay, got it.
1:59:24Darius Butler:We do have Bobby Buanga though, who is probably maybe the second best player in the MLS.
1:59:29Pat McAfee:Bobby Buanga? Yeah, Bobby Buanga.
1:59:32Darius Butler:Scores every game for LAFC, and we're not talking like rinky-dink goals. This guy's putting it top shelf.
1:59:36Pat McAfee:This is the goalie wars here. Oh, sweet. Yes, this is goalie wars that will be happening tonight. This is a great idea. They should actually make this a league. This is something to think about making a league, especially if you're able to get the World Cup goalies to compete in this, because there's a lot of moxie in those World Cup goalies. But yeah, some of these guys get to showcase their legs. Yeah, it's awesome. And what do they score? They're going to what, Gumpy? Is it like penalties? They each get a certain amount of attempts, or is it a minute? How does it work?
2:00:02Darius Butler:I think it's over attempts, and then they total score.
2:00:04Pat McAfee:It's sweet. It's a fun thing. We'll watch the clip, certainly. We'll continue to have eyes on sports all over the world for the good of sport is what we try to do. And we can't thank all of you enough. If it wasn't for all of you, we wouldn't have the greatest jobs on earth. Thank you all so much. Be a friend. Tell a friend something nice. It might change your life. We're in this thing together. Team on me. Team on three. For the good of sport, baby. One, two, three. Team. Goodbye.
