In short
Training-camp “vibes” and early-season projections across the NFL, with contract news and standout practice highlights. The hosts discuss whether early signals from team facilities, quarterback competitions, and player health/attitude should be taken seriously—especially for the Saints, Buccaneers, Broncos, Bengals, Vikings, Browns, Bills, and NFC South.
Guests (backgrounds)
- Adam Schefter: ESPN senior NFL insider; long-time NFL reporter/insider.

- Peter Schrager: Mentioned in episode title; not present in the provided transcript.
- AJ Hawk: Former NFL linebacker; Super Bowl champion; college football champion; Ryder Cup winner; joins live from Ohio.
Key claims
- Saints “vibes” are high after paying WR Chris Olave (and keeping key pieces), and they can win the NFC South and make a playoff run.
- Buccaneers “vibes” are negative due to internal conflict and contract drama around QB Baker Mayfield, plus broader roster uncertainty.
- Broncos are a legitimate contender partly because of the new practice facility and WR Tyreek Hill one-handed highlight; AJ Hawk frames Denver as “all in” with Sean Payton.
- Bengals and Saints are “coming” (playoff-caliber teams), with Bengals defense improved by Dexter Lawrence.
- Vikings QB competition: Kyler Murray is favored, but JJ McCarthy shouldn’t be written off yet.
- Browns QB situation is unsettled between Deshaun Watson and Shador Sanders; coaches will welcome Deion Sanders at camp.
Notable examples
- Chris Olave contract: cited as $132M total; 1,000-yard production in 3 of last 4 seasons.
- Broncos facility drone tour; AJ notes locker room/gym scale.
- Debo Samuel re-signing with 49ers after talks; Ricky Pearsall injury uncertainty.
- Panthers: multiple season-ending injuries and blood clots for OT Taylor Moten.
- Tony Romo placed on leave by CBS (per discussion).

On this feel-good Friday, July 31st, 2026, this program begins now. Football! He is the absolute greatest, and we got huge contracts being announced around camps. We got huge problems being spotlighted around camps, and we got highlights in abundance for today's Friday special Not Ask segment. Life is fantastic. We hope you are enjoying this Feel Good Friday. The Toxic Table is here at AP Tone and at Ty Schmidt. Conman. Hey, baby. Love you, Conman. Love you, Conor. Obviously, Conor got married one week ago today.
0:42Pat McAfee:He has been celebrating his life for the last week or so. Excited for him to get back on Monday where we will be live from? Latrobe. Pittsburgh Steelers training camp. Right. That's going to be on Monday. Now, I'll be excited to see how that goes. We just learned today that obviously they'll be practicing during our show, so that'll be happening behind us. But obviously talking to people associated with team during practice is a difficult thing. Sure. I believe maybe last half hour or so of show we'll be able to chit-chat with some of the guys. It'll be fun to catch up. Mike McCarthy's winning people over.
1:17Pat McAfee:A lot of people saying he's not tackling in there. It's going to be soft. He's like, no mistake. It's going to be physical, all right? It's going to be physical. We've got an older roster here. We're just trying to get these guys know how to tackle. If they don't know how to tackle, how about this? I'll fire myself. If these professional football players at this stage, a lot of old guys on that team. If they don't know how to tackle, that'll be on me. But people in Pittsburgh are saying, you're not taking these, you're not going to the ground. I thought you were a Pittsburgh guy. You went to Dallas and got soft.
1:44Pat McAfee:Oh, Green Bay, that's cute. Here in Pittsburgh, we tackle people. Mike McCarley said, get off my ass, please. We'll be thumping. Monday will be first day of pads. We'll be excited to see the juice from that particular practice as opposed to what we saw maybe last year. Now, Tone, it's not just the Pittsburgh Steelers who are in training camp. Everybody's in training camp. And there was a lot of money given to a wide receiver down in New Orleans. Congratulations to Ohio State Buckeye, Chris Olave. All right. He earned this. Now, listen, a lot of people talking about the Saints over the last few years.
2:15Pat McAfee:And Olave did have a year in which he had, I believe, a concussion and had some injuries, so he missed some games. I think he only had 32 receptions in that particular season. but three out of the last four years he's had over a thousand yards last year he had 100 catches over a thousand yards did his best work in kelly moe's offense and now he's getting rewarded from that a lot of people high on the saints and i'll tell you what them giving a lot of over a hundred million dollars now you have to spend money yep okay the nfl roster salary cap structure you actually do have to spend money so somebody is going to get paid them paying him all this money and then you look over there at tampa bay and it's like tampa bay's got a lot of bad vibes Saints got a lot of good vibes.
2:52Pat McAfee:Could have never guessed that going into the season, but that's where we sit. Saints could be a real problem, and we've kind of ruled them out over the last couple years because they were in such salary cap hell. They were in such a situation where I think even the team themselves said, we got two arms tied behind our back basically for about a year or two. We won all in for about 10, 15 years straight. Now they're on the other side of that. Kelly Moe is a little bit more experienced as a head coach. They obviously are able to keep Kamara there. They bring in A-Chan. They got their quarterback, although he's 27 and only in his second year.
3:25Pat McAfee:You're able to pay your wide receiver. Defense still has some stuff. It's like, hold the phone. Are the Saints a problem this year in an NFC South that has a lot of question marks? And with the vibes we're feeling from the second day of camp, I'm saying yes to the N-O, pal. Yeah, like when you talk about vibes in the NFC South, the Saints definitely have the best vibes coming into the season. They are second in the odds in the division. But when you look at the other teams, like the Bucs' vibe's not great right now. The Panthers had really good vibes coming in, but they've already had two season-ending injuries to two of their young guys who they thought may contribute this year.
3:57So the Panthers' vibe's a little down. Obviously, they won the division last year. We still think they're going to be very good. But like in the Falcons, they don't know who their quarterback's going to be. So when you go with the Saints, the vibe's really high. They feel like they've found their young quarterback. They've got weapons. Well, he's middle-aged. You're right, middle-aged, young quarterback, second-year quarterback. But they drafted Jordan Tyson as a weapon for him. They have a Jawan Johnson at tight end who's a great weapon. Alave. And this time last year, people were wondering if Alave was going to play football again because of his concussions and injury.
4:24But no, three of the last four seasons, as you said, over 1 ,000 yards. The internet was like really, really felt really good for Alave yesterday because of what he dealt with the season before. Everyone seemed to be really, really happy for him yesterday. So it was awesome.
4:37Pat McAfee:Ohio State wide receivers now in the NFL. And I know LSU says they are wide receiver you, and they certainly have the argument. Ohio State, though, they are pumping out. Terry McLaurin, obviously, we know how we feel about him. We think he's an absolute dog from Indianapolis, by the way. Garrett Wilson, we've seen him become the face of the Jets over there. Olave now signs for 132. And then Jackson Smith and Jigba's fresh off an offensive MVP where he got two trophies. Yeah, two. Not just one trophy because they spelled a word wrong. And he got 168 million in total. And then everybody in Arizona is like, all right, so now Maserati Marv is going to get going.
5:13Pat McAfee:going to get going? Hopefully he will. I saw Carson Beck making some plays over there. I saw Jacoby spinning a little bit. That is kind of what this time of year is about is just finding out who can make a splash play once every three days so that the internet's happy with their success. There's so much going on. We're only seeing glimpses of it, Ty. How are you taking it all?
5:31Jeff Passan:Same deal. You know, you see a guy every once in a while get really excited. Okay, he's supposed to have a big year. He's going to have a big year. Like when I'm watching the Packers, anytime Jordan Love has a completion, Matthew Golden had a pretty big day yesterday. and I just said, okay, signed, sealed, and delivered. Matthew Golden's going to have 1 ,400 yards this year. He's going to have 12 touchdowns. He is going to be the number one guy. So it's a lot of that kind of stuff, and then it really is more so than anything else, just holding your breath that none of your guys who you know you're going to need down the stretch are going to get hurt.
6:00Pat McAfee:Yeah, getting hurt is obviously something we're all watching for Schefter and Rapp's Twitter accounts to keep us updated, and obviously the local reporters on the beat, we appreciate that. But you talk about highlights. did we remember penguins are waddling around at altitude all of a sudden? I forgot. I'll admit. Well, here's a nice little reminder. Waddle, boom, is a member of the Denver Broncos with Bo Nix and Sean Payton as the offensive mind. I believe he's not calling plays, but still obviously in the building. Waddle being added to an AFC Championship Denver Broncos offense with Bo Nix only getting better.
6:36Pat McAfee:this is something that until I saw this highlight I wasn't fully like oh yeah holy hell Waddle is a stud and Waddle's open Waddle's tough Waddle's fast Waddle's a lot and Waddle wasn't talked about much whenever he goes up to the Denver Broncos this offseason he's gonna make magic for him this is just like the AJ Brown thing with New England it doesn't really I don't think it's really gonna hit us until like some massive implications are on the line and AJ Brown does something that A.J. Brown has been doing since he got into the NFL, and we go, oh, yeah, A.J. Brown is now a member of the New England Patriots.
7:07Pat McAfee:Can't believe Drake May has another weapon. That Waddle-Bo Nicks thing, I think I just kind of, oh, not a big deal. And then you see him, and it's like, oh, yeah, Waddle is a dog, and now he's on a team that's actually a contender. I personally thought it was criminal when I looked at the DraftKings odds and saw that the Denver Broncos were third in the AFC West right now as far as odds to win the division. They won that division last year. They made it to the AFC Championship. Their O-line's been together for five years. Their defense had the most sacks, I believe, in the NFL last year. They're absurd.
7:38Their secondary is absurd. Then you add Waddle. Cortland Sutton's been great. Is he a true number one? Maybe, maybe not, but he's a great 1A, 1B for Waddle. And then they have all those young wide receivers, talented wide receivers as well. I don't know if people are sleeping on the Broncos, but for them to be behind the Chiefs in the charges, I know the Chiefs are the Chiefs, but for them to be third in that division seems a bit weird.
7:59Pat McAfee:Benito almost won what? Defensive MVP last year, you know, let alone everybody else they have on their team that are absolute stars. But Denver Broncos kind of getting overlooked. And also, brand new practice facility. Beautiful. Beautiful. This is huge. Drone artist that did this, congratulations. We appreciate it, obviously. Great view of their new practice facility. It's a lot of walking. A lot of walking. It feels like a long way on a drone as we were getting a chance to kind of walk every hallway, see every room. They inevitably end up getting to the locker room and to the workout room. This is all front office stuff, I do believe, that we're seeing here.
8:33Pat McAfee:Just opened in July. I mean, they've got a brand-new facility. They've got the richest owner in the sport, right? They've got Sean Payton, who now has his team and his vision. They add Waddle. Bo Nix has a chip on his shoulder, I assume. He gets removed from the biggest game of his life, literally in a heartbreaking way at the very end. It's like, yeah, he did. He put his ankle on his shoulder as a chip. It's like the Denver Broncos are a problem. And I'm saying all that strictly because I saw Waddle snag it one-handed. That's all we need. That is all you need at this time of year. Joining us, ladies and gentlemen, live from Anattic in Ohio, is a Super Bowl champion, a college football champion, a Ryder Cup winner, and a man that was probably looking at that practice facility saying, man, it'll make them like they used to do the A.J.
9:14Pat McAfee:Hawk. Hawker, did you follow that entire drone? It continues here. This is like kind of, I think, for the front office, maybe the ad salespeople. Wait until they get to the players area. The players area is absurd, AJ. It is a ridiculous new beautiful facility. Richest owner in sports certainly helps, but the Broncos and Sean Payton's Broncos, all in. Now, I will say the barbershop is bigger than the running backs room, which does make you kind of question some things, but beautifully done. Love the drone footage. Love the Waddle highlight. And these are the types of things we're looking for in training camp to make us go, oh, wait a minute, maybe there's a barbershop.
9:52Pat McAfee:Look how big the barbershop is. It's bigger than the running back room. But the good idea, by the way, everybody's in there getting a fresh cut makes you feel good. There's a little field for you guys to work out in. And then they're going to get to the gym here in a couple seconds. This is the dining area, obviously, for the boys, you know, for the lads. Go ahead and check it out. Do what you got to do. That's a lot of walking. It's a long walk. So big. It's a long walk. I mean, that's a very long walk. It's a college campus. Yeah, it is. It is beautiful. AJ, Denver Broncos vibe. Here it is. Look at the fucking locker room.
10:19Pat McAfee:Wow. Yeah, it looks like a movie. It actually looks like a movie. I don't know if I like the down in the middle. It's like a sunken-in hangout spot, huh? Yeah, you got to go down the steps right there in the middle of the locker room. Look at the gym. I mean, this is awesome. This is awesome. Broncos might win the Super Bowl. And that helps in free agency in college, right? Or sorry, in NFL, right? No. No? Money. Money helps. Okay, well, yeah. Yeah, I mean. They got a lot of that. Let's say the money's the same. It doesn't hurt. It doesn't hurt. Money's the same. The fact that they can run for a championship still.
10:48Pat McAfee:Yes. You know, that is a big contender. Yes. Yes. Primetime games, yes. What's my life going to be like? Well, everybody that's ever lived in Denver said it's the greatest. What's the practice facility like? Oh, it's the newest and nicest. It certainly doesn't hurt. It checks a box. But I don't think it's really like, hey, you seen our facility? How about a$4 million cut? Somebody's got to pay for this. You see the pools? I mean, they're gigantic. Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen, is senior NFL insider for ESPN, Adam Schefter. Hey, Schefter. Schefter with a Coldplay.
11:18Jeff Passan:Okay.
11:18Pat McAfee:What's my favorite Coldplay song?
11:20Jeff Passan:Viva La Vida Sky Full of Stars is mine
11:37That's them? Yeah You were doing Sky Full of Stars That's a banger
11:45They would be great in the sphere Coldplay would
11:47Pat McAfee:You were all yellow
11:50Jeff Passan:Yep, they do that one too.
11:51Pat McAfee:What's that? I don't think I know that one. Their concert's in general. That was the Beatles there you just did? That was Coldplay? Coldplay, yeah. They have a lot of flags, right? Yeah. A lot of flags. Yeah. You find a lot of flags. You go to a Coldplay concert, you have to fly a flag a little bit? Last summer we went in Toronto, and I will say it was one of the great concerts I've ever been to, and I look forward to going again. It was incredible. Went with my wife. I didn't get captured on the Kiss Canva with my wife, but I did go with my daughter, and it was awesome. It was honestly, they're amazing.
12:20They're amazing.
12:21Pat McAfee:Just the amount of uncomfort that Chris, right? Yeah, Chris Martin. Chris had probably the week after that whole thing. Just how, oh my God. Oh my God. Are we going to be like, what are they going to do? That is not what we're supposed to be. We're supposed to have a good time. We're supposed to see Shefty and his wife smooching. You know, we're not supposed to be doing all that. All right, Shefty, let's talk a little bit about sports. Let's talk a little bit about the league. Olave obviously gets paid in a huge way. three out of the last four years has been over 1 ,000. We were talking about how the vibes in New Orleans, very high.
12:52Pat McAfee:I mean, the last couple years, I feel like they punted. They understood the situation. They keep Kamara. Obviously, Taysom Hill's done there. They pay Olave. They bring in A-Chan. Tyler Shuck might be a guy. The defense has dogs all across the board. Kelly Moe's a little bit more experienced. And then they go over to Tampa, and it's like, well, everybody hates everything over there. They're actually coming out and saying disappointed and disrespected, starting quarterback saying that. And the stud on the defensive side says, get me the hell out of here. So whenever we're reading these types of vibes and situations this early, should we jump the gun as quickly as saying Saints are the favorite in the NFC South?
13:24Pat McAfee:And oh, yeah, the Denver Broncos, they're going to win Super Bowl. He's got a new practice facility. And Jalen Waddell snagged the one-handed catch. Should we read into the vibes of these buildings right now? Or how do you kind of describe what's going on in these different places, more specifically New Orleans and Tampa Bay? I think there's always something to the vibes that are going on around a team. In New Orleans, I think there have been great vibes around that team all through the offseason. I think they're on their way back. I think anybody that watched Tyler Shuck last year recognized right away that he looks like a big hit for them.
13:57He looks like they got it exactly right. And when you watch that guy play in the second half last year, he looked like he's going to be a big-time quarterback to me. And if that is indeed the case, then yeah, I think the Saints absolutely can win that division. I think I expect them to make a playoff run this year. And I think they'll be a dangerous team, and especially if you look at their schedule. It's not overly daunting. The team is really good. And the quarterback, that's everything. They hit on that pick, it looks like. It looks like. We'll still see. It is early. When you watched him play last year, he looked like he belonged.
14:34And if that's the case, then they're going to be a good team for years to come.
14:37Pat McAfee:I concur. And then you look over at Tampa Bay, it feels all negative. and if you just continue to dissect both of these, it's like, are they in a new era? Tampa Bay trying to get to it right now? Are they trying to get to a new era? Potentially. Move on from Mike Evans. Vita Vea wants out. Baker Mayfield's not happy. David retires. They're dealing with all that right now. And then the Saints, they're in a new era. And Kellen Moore, you know, think about what the Eagles' complaints were last year. Everything about the Eagles last year was like this. Offensive stinks. Yeah, well said. Jalen stinks.
15:05Pat McAfee:AJ's mad. Offensive coordinator, it's like, well, Kelly Moe left. You know, and nobody's really talking about how much Kelly or Kellen meant to Philadelphia. And then we see what we're saying right now for the Saints. It's like maybe Kellen does kind of have a little bit of some shit to him and leadership and obviously being able to run a team. I'm pumped for them because that fan base. Yes. Psychos. Yes. Great. Yeah, we need them to be back in the fold in a big way. And they had just kind of been at the bottom of the map just like for a while. Them coming back. Good news. Congrats to Chris. Okay, let's talk about some other news and things that are happening.
15:39Pat McAfee:Go ahead, Ty.
15:40Jeff Passan:Chef, Debo Samuel is going back to the 49ers. Is Ricky Pearsall, it kind of sounds like he might be done for the year, another just bad string of luck for them. But was this kind of always in the cards? Do you think Debo was kind of just waiting for maybe something like this? And are the 49ers exploring anything else? Are they pretty comfortable with him? And now that Deshaun Stribling looks like he's making a big impact in camp so far. Well, the truth of the matter is Debo had been talking to the 49ers all along, and the 49ers had told him that they were interested in bringing him back to San Francisco for weeks.
Read the full transcript
16:17There were actual conversations that occurred between Kyle Shanahan and Debo Samuel, and I think Debo obviously was looking to see what kind of deal he could land in the open market. And when those deals that he's looking for don't materialize, and those conversations with San Francisco continue on. And all of a sudden, there are questions about Ricky Pearsall, who, by the way, right now is continuing to meet with doctors. He's got another meeting planned for Monday right now with another doctor. But he's going through his meetings with doctors, and there are absolute questions about, you know, if and when he'll be able to play this season that have to be answered still by the doctors.
16:54The Niners have been talking to Debo. No other offers had materialized meaningful offers. And so in the end, we've seen what San Francisco can do with Debo, how the 49ers utilize him. He's dangerous in their offense, and I would imagine he'll be a factor again this year. It worked out really for both sides. That's really where he should be playing, and they're fortunate that nobody else stepped up and signed him, and they were there for each other when the 49ers needed to add another receiver last night.
17:23Pat McAfee:It sounded like your washer, dryer, or microwave, potentially, was sitting in the sky full of stars in the back there. They're happy you're getting some fresh linens potentially. Here's a Hembo stat that says the slant god going back to Brock Purdy could be a good thing. 2023-2024, 5.8 yards after catch per completion. 4 ,000 in the NFL. We know Debo is filled with a lot of that. 2025, lowest in the NFL. So, you know, maybe a little bit after catch could come back with Debo coming back to the Niners. Understands the culture. We'll certainly buy into that. Hey, we're rallying around Shanahan. We're doing this entire thing, especially after the car accident and how scary crazy that all seemingly was in rollout of.
18:02Pat McAfee:So I like Debo going back there. I love Debo going back there. Yeah, with Trent. He's one of the mascots. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, Debo. He was one of the mascots. Yeah, he was. Was it Trent, too? Are we going to say that? Is that how this is going to go?
18:16Jeff Passan:By definition, he is one of the mascots as well. What a goofball.
18:19Pat McAfee:That guy keeps getting microphones. I have no idea how it's possible. Well, let's continue to move forward around NFL stories. Go ahead, AJ. Yeah, Chef, obviously in Cleveland we're seeing all the – they're posting the stats between Deshaun Watson and Shador. I guess what is your hunch on what their opening day starting situation looks like in the quarterback position? Well, that's when you know there's a quarterback competition. When every beat writer is charting every throw and they're posting the stats and the attempts and completions from each practice, touchdowns, interceptions. I don't have a guess for you right now, AJ, because I think there's going to be a lot that plays out this summer.
18:55I think it's between Deshaun Watson and Shador Sanders. It's hard to imagine that Deshaun Watson is even in this point. Nobody would have thought he would have been competing for a starting job at this stage in his career with everything that's gone on there. And Shador Sanders has looked better and better and looked more and more comfortable. They're going to let these two guys duke it out this summer, play in the preseason. We'll see which guy rises up. I think it's anybody's job right now.
19:20Pat McAfee:Oh, come Deshaun Watson has to look over there and see his competition's dead on the field. Now, obviously, the Internet's going to have the reactions that the Internet has. But I think if you were to ask any NFL coach if Deion Sanders would be welcome at their practice, first ballot Hall of Famer, one of the greatest athletes and football players to ever play, I think every coach would say, yeah, I think we'd let. And guess what? But when Peyton Manning's son is potentially going into a team, I assume Peyton's going to be welcome at a lot of training camps as well and allowed to walk on the field.
19:59Pat McAfee:I assume same thing with like a Ray Lewis. Yeah, sure, sure. I think people have forgotten because Colorado has kind of become ass over the last year or so. I think a lot of people have forgotten who the hell Deion Sanders is. Like I think people see him as potentially coach of Colorado and maybe down there at Jackson's or whatever the case is. this is one of the greatest football players that has ever existed in every league that he has ever played in. So everybody that is around ball holds Prime in a different category. So if he wants to come to – hell, if he wanted to go to the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp with his son competing for quarterback with the Browns, Mike McCarthy would be like, certainly let the – We're not going to give him our fucking play sheet.
20:38Pat McAfee:I think it is fascinating, though, the immediate response to Prime being there and because his son is competing for the job, that there's a negative that comes from it. It's like, I hate to break it to you. Dion's going to be welcome at any training camp. Go ahead. That's also people that don't know Prime. Prime is positivity. Prime is inspirational. Prime is motivational. You want that guy around every team. He knows how to lift up people. To me, zero issue. I think he should be there more than he is. Well, he's also got a team, you know, that he's got a coach here coming up. But he's got to be, what, nine toes down now?
21:12Pat McAfee:Yeah. He's got to be nine toes down for Colorado, but also his son, also the NFL and football as a whole. I love that he made an appearance there and watched him there. I'm like, can we get him a cart? You know, we got him walking pretty far. Can we get this guy a damn golf cart? But that might have been too much. That might have been a little bit too much. AJ, the question around the Browns is who's the quarterback? What if they figure it out, though? They're paying on the defensive side. What if the Browns go on a run, AJ? There's a chance that that's going to happen. Let's stay in Ohio. Shefty, Cincinnati's just fighting each other.
21:41Pat McAfee:They're just fighting over there. Have you gotten any word out of Cincinnati Bengals camp about a new edge, maybe, coming from the defensive side? AJ pointed something out yesterday. He's like, you know what? The Bengals have started slow, what, the last five seasons, basically, since Joe? So first day, them getting into it a little bit. What are you hearing from Cincy? And is Sexy Dex's presence literally this big of a game changer for that defensive side, which it feels like has a lot more energy and buzz than they've had over the years? They have made some impressive moves on the defensive side of the football.
22:13they knew how bad the defense was. They went out and addressed it. Dexter Lawrence was the big acquisition. There he was in this particular clip where he told Joe Burrow, I want to see it today. And Joe Burrow said, I'm going to bring it every day, baby. And I think that Dexter Lawrence brings a certain element of talent and leadership to that lineup. They added other players. They know how important this year is. And I view the Bengals the same way that I view the Saints. as a team that last year didn't have the season go the way they wanted, that this year has a real chance to make a real run, that has a favorable schedule, that has the talent in place that people aren't expecting.
22:53Look, if we go back and look, there have been at least four new teams, at least four, that have made the NFL playoffs every single year for the last 36 seasons. It's not accidental that we get new playoff teams every year. And I won't be surprised when we're talking in December and January if we're talking about whether the Saints and Bengals can lock up their playoff spots. I view them both in a similar light.
23:20Pat McAfee:Oh, his Shefty's got him on a tier. He's coming hard. Yeah, that's right. These two are coming real hard. We're talking coming and not stopping coming. We're talking about fire hose coming. We're talking coming on the way. Do you hear that, AJ? That's what Shefter's saying about the Cincinnati Bengals and the New Orleans Saints. I didn't know Shefter was as high on the Browns and the Saints coming hard, I guess. Bengals. Yeah, he was going pretty hard on it all. He's going real hard. Snapping rubber. Real hard. He's going real hard on the Bengals and the Saints. He said they're coming. All 17 games, all 18 weeks, coming once, coming twice, making a three-come shot, coming thing.
24:04Yeah.
24:05Pat McAfee:They're coming. Well said. That's right. They're coming. The Bengals coming. Boom. Put on a shirt. Saints coming. Yep. Sheffy said four teams that didn't make the playoffs will make the playoffs this year. That's just kind of how it is. At least. At least. They're all coming, maybe. You know, maybe all the teams that didn't. Who's not coming then? Someone's got to be, you know, sputtering then. Four teams got to be sputtering out there, not coming. Well, four teams that made the playoffs last year kind of blew their load last year. Yeah, they did. Exactly. They have no chance of coming again. No.
24:34Pat McAfee:And that's kind of the parody of the NFL is just everybody's potentially coming until it's kind of come out.
24:40Jeff Passan:It runs out. It drives up.
24:42Pat McAfee:Speaking of, there's a big-time competition happening over there in Minnesota. Now, J.J. McCarthy, the incumbent, I believe, even though he's been injured, understands the offense. Michigan man, from our understanding, is having a good couple days of camp. Kyler Murray obviously brought in from Arizona. Die hard Vikings fan as a child. Is this a way to salvage his career like a lot of quarterbacks who have gotten second chances at different places? tone has a question for you yes jeffy the vikings are another team that uh the season did not go the way they wanted to last year who could be coming into the playoffs this season now if they get the quarterback position right i noticed on the vikings social media uh that there's no they put they haven't put out any videos of their quarterback competition anyone making any throws yet so we got to rely on insiders like you to tell us what you are hearing from minnesota on potentially how uh those two players those two quarterbacks are looking so far they've been pretty adamant that But both quarterbacks are going to duel for the job all through camp.
25:35I think both have had their moments in camp so far. And I think most people think that Kyler is going to be the favorite for the job. He handpicked Minnesota. Minnesota was interested in him. And he could become the latest quarterback to become this year's version of Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones, Baker Mayfield, some of the quarterbacks that have bounced around. I just think it's way too early to write off J.J. McCarthy just yet. And I'm not just saying that because I went to Michigan. He went to Michigan. He's played 10 NFL games. He's had injuries. He essentially has played with an offensive line that always hasn't been great.
26:13The team struggled the last couple of years. He's still growing and learning. If we go back and look and compare his numbers to some of the great young quarterbacks early on in their career, like a Matthew Stafford, like a Josh Allen, there were growing pains and bumps for a lot of these quarterbacks. And that may be the case for J.J. McCarthy. My point is we still haven't heard the final word on him yet. And the Vikings are going to let this play out all summer long. Again, I understand all the excitement and enthusiasm about Kyler Murray. It's warranted. He has a chance to thrive in that offense.
26:48But I just think people have been a little bit too quick to write off J.J. McCarthy so far.
26:53Pat McAfee:Yeah, because Kyler is potentially a sky full of stars in Kevin O 'Connell's offense. Yeah, true. That's kind of what we think about the entirety. But then living La Vida Loca is what J.J. McCarthy is kind of all about. Yeah, exactly. You know, so it's a cold world, but both of them are going to have to play at some point. And whenever you talk about J.J. McCarthy maybe finding his second gear, and we talk about Kyler becoming the next, you know, Baker, Sam Darnold, Kirk Cousins even. I think you can go on and on about all the different quarterbacks that have hit their second. I mean, J.J. might do that.
27:24Pat McAfee:I feel like we've already been through a chapter of J.J. McCarthy, and everybody said he's a bust, he's fragile, and he's not good. He might even get his opportunity to showcase who he actually is through this all. But it's hard not to get excited about Kyler Murray and Kevin O 'Connell's offense. It's really hard not to get excited about that. And it's really hard not to just judge J.J. for what he has, which is 10 games, because we're just taking the good from Kyler's previous career at Arizona. There's a lot of bad, too. So it's just like it's an interesting situation that they're going to have to deal with over there.
27:56Pat McAfee:General manager already been fired. He utilized the pick for J.J. McCarthy. So what does that mean whenever it comes to loyalty? That also plays into it all. And then everything Schefter's saying, talking about loyalty, Schefter's golfing with J.J. McCarthy every other week at these Michigan events. That's true. So I think he knows J.J. better than all of us. So I think that is why he's continuing to be like, hey, J.J.'s a competitor. J.J. wants this. J.J.'s a talent. Look what he did everywhere. It's like I don't think anybody has a clue who's going to actually win that role, even though a lot of people including t-lin who has obviously been in the building say like kyler's definitely the guy it's like well hold the hold the phone bro not so fast my friend unfortunately i i think because shift he talked about you know the the bumps as a young quarterback that happens to everyone if it wasn't for the nine thing and the meme i the public perception would it be a lot different on jj and this quarterback race i i feel like that for some reason the nine thing and and the meme really really changed the public perception on j also not that it should have
28:53Jeff Passan:The draft class he was in. Like, Caleb did what he did last year. Bo Nix led a team to an AFC championship. Jaden went to an NFC championship. Like, all the guys around him have been super successful, and he looked like hammered dog shit all last year.
29:06Pat McAfee:Well, that's a Packers fan talking right there. So we've got to remember who's saying all of these things whenever they're saying them. We'll obviously continue to follow along. We have faith in the Vikings, but we also have faith that they won't be good. Like, it's like a duality of a team, the Minnesota Vikings, because we believe they certainly can. But is it actually going to happen in a lot of people's eyes? Probably not. We shall see. Let's go back to Cincinnati. We got a text from Coach Pagano Dornis, and Sheffer, he'd like you to remember this whenever you're doing your reporting. It's all fun and games and love the intensity at Cincy's practice until you lose Jamar T.
29:41Pat McAfee:Higgins for the season. Former free agent number 35 tackling these guys in seven on seven. Get him out of here, is what Chuck just said. That's how a coach feels, and that's how we all kind of feel. and this is why Mike McCarthy comes out and goes, we're not tackling. We got to get these guys to the season. This is what we're worried about. Chuck Pagano, former free agent number 35, tackling these guys in seven on seven. What are we doing here? That's from Chuck Pagano, who has had his heartbreak from a player of his getting injured in something stupid and then obviously him or another coach getting fired and their families having to leave.
30:17Pat McAfee:So that's where Chuck's coming from. We always have to remember that. We always have to remember that. AJ and I, though, 35's in there stirring it up. He's stirring it. We need a little bit of that. We need a little bit of that. Let's go to Buffalo. CJ GJ is making his first impression very good, I think. A lot of chatting, a lot of chirping. We have footage of him bouncing around in the stretch lines. Obviously, Joe Brady's first training camp. A lot of people are saying, Joe Brady just looks like he's friends with these guys. You know, what is this all about? Well, he was hired from within the building.
30:48Pat McAfee:He had been a head coaching candidate before. He does know the entire team. He understands that with Josh Allen as a quarterback, you're going to have to make it to the playoffs. You're going to have to win a Super Bowl. But what are you hearing out of Buffalo? And CJGJ is beloved up there, which we appreciate and respect. And what are expectations, you think, in the building for the Bills this year? Undefeated? You know what's interesting is that we came off that highlight of 35 in Cincinnati, getting into that whole scrum and throwing himself around and doing some things that he probably shouldn't be doing.
31:21I go back to the combine this year and being around some people in the Bills organization. And the one thing that they said to me at that time, which I remembered since then, was that we need to get some guys in here that are kind of bad guys, like bad boys. Like, we need some attitude. Bad boys, bad boys. What you going to do? That are going to get down and dirty. And so you're going to see us take some chances on guys this offseason that might bounce around that basically are polarizing type figures. And I think CJ, CJ, GJ, that fits right into that category. And if you go and look at some of the guys they drafted, it fits right into that category.
32:07They've been – this has been a very nice team. They've been very well behaved. They've been out there playing hard. Like you need some guys, some rabble rousers, right, They're going to go out there and muck it up and bring attitude and piss off people. And I think CJ GJ is one of those guys for this team, and that's exactly what they were looking for during the offseason.
32:31Pat McAfee:Yeah, bringing moxie energy and also these types of guys, they're the guys obviously you love on your team, hate on the other team. CJ GJ has gotten many a man personal fouls for throwing full fists at helmets in the middle of games. I mean, he might go down as the greatest. CJGJ might go down as the greatest. He knocks the play sheet out Joe Brady's hand. Antagonizing, yeah. Pulling Joe Brady's card and schedule out of his pocket and then pointing at him and then jogging away. It's like he might be the greatest. Joe Brady's saying, I'm going to get your ass. Okay. By the way, Joe's talking too.
33:05Pat McAfee:Oh, yeah. Joe is very, very chirpy in this entire thing. But when it's all said and done, CJGJ might be the greatest menace in the history of the NFL. so if Bean and the boys up in Buffalo were looking for a little bit of moxie they got the one I mean they might have the goat of this entire thing and I'm excited that they're embracing that because Josh Allen remember was voted as what the best trash talker
33:27Jeff Passan:biggest trash talker in the NFL
33:29Pat McAfee:something like that on the offensive side so through camp here we're going to see Josh Allen and CJGJ too that's inevitable we got to know that and if Chuck Pagana is watching what we hope happens CJGJ Josh Allen fist to cuff. That's what we hope. Just to showcase that they're a tough team. Right, AJ? That's what we're looking for? Open hand, Josh. Open hand, both of you guys. We don't need to break in our hand. Don't punch a helmet with your fist. Is that what you tell your kids? It sounds like that sounded like a coaching point. I don't tell my kid to tell it to anybody. Watch old boss rooting clips.
33:59That guy, he's an unbelievable palm striker. That's what you need. Bang it up. Bang it up.
34:03Pat McAfee:Boom. Kick the shin. Bang it up. Bang it up. Bang it up. Pick up the chair. Stab. Boom. Put down. Pow. We know boss rooting. Yeah, we do know that. You know who Boss Gruden is? Shefty? Boss Gruden? All right, no. That's a bit of a rabble rouser. That's John's son, who's the head trainer, right? Boss Gruden? No. It's Deuce. Oh, sorry, Deuce. Deuce, yeah. Yeah, Deuce, by the way. I think he is. I'm a big powerlifter. He's awesome. He probably knows Boss. I mean, Boss Gruden definitely knows who that is. Okay, Shefty, what do we miss? What do we need to talk about? Daniel Jones is back. He's flying around.
34:37Pat McAfee:Anthony Richardson just threw a fadeaway 50-yard bomb at training camp. So Colts are going to win the Super Bowl. I don't see you tweeting that much. Anything else that we need to kind of pay attention to around the league? The Panthers have had a tough start to camp here, losing their rookie wide receiver Chris Brazil to a season-ending injury, losing Nick Scowtin to a season-ending torn ACL. Their offensive tackle Taylor Moten, blood clots, and he'll miss the start of the season. And again, we're talking about the NFC South where we started, and the vibes being high in New Orleans, and some of those issues in Tampa yesterday with Baker Mayfield, it almost feels like it's Baker versus the team.
35:16Baker's not happy with them. They're not happy with the way he spoke about the organization. That's not great. The Panthers have had injuries. The Falcons, Tua Tungvalu is back at practice. He hasn't had this type of lower back muscle issue before, but he's already been going through individual drills. Atlanta obviously will be without Michael Penix for the next month. They have Tua working back in slowly, and B. John Robinson is still not practicing because he's a holden. So there's some issues with some of those NFC South teams, although New Orleans did lose Brian Brissett the other day, their defensive tech.
35:50So every one of these teams in the NFC South has had some sort of issue here this summer, Pat. And you didn't mention Tony Romo today. What happened to Tony? What about him? You guys don't know? No. CBS placed him on leave for the time being.
36:07Pat McAfee:Oh, and J.J. Watt took his spot. Is that what he watched? Exactly. I see you knew that. Oh, good guy. I didn't know that was the... Was that surprising, Shefty? Was that surprising to see? I think everything that happened here that unfolded, the videos and all the coverage, when you go through an issue like that, organizations have to make decisions. And the decision that CBS made was to place him on leave right now and promote J.J. to the number one team. And JJ is going to get a chance here to work with Jim Nance and Tracy Wilson. And JJ did a great job in that spot. And we'll see if, and when Tony Romo gets back to CBS.
36:43Pat McAfee:Okay. So on this note, there's also a lot going on, right? With Paramount, CBS, everything. I think there's, I think there's a huge situation brewing maybe that's involving courts and stuff. I think. Yeah. And I think there's a lot. Is there realignment? That's going to like, there's a lot happening business wise there too, which obviously plays into it all. We hope Tony gets the help. he needs we also hope tony just gets a driver bro just let's just put all these questions away and let's just handle that as we go forward golfing all the tournaments you want to golf in uh but we don't need to see you doing a full calisthenics warm-up before you know a sobriety test i mean that was just that was a wild scene and we are not we none of us are perfect but we are huge fans of tony rumo yeah huge fans now operating while intoxicated is very dangerous and we think in 2026 it is stupid that is a stupid thing to be doing especially with everything that is available, especially to Tony Romo.
37:34Pat McAfee:So we are not advocates of what Tony Romo did, but we would like to follow up in saying we think Tony Romo is hilarious and we think Tony Romo is very good for the sport and we think Tony Romo loves ball. So that is just what we would like to say. But we do hope that he gets the help. And we hope JJ continues to do great because obviously it's for the good of ball. That's a huge spot. A lot of eyes on that particular game. So the ball needs it. The league needs it. And we'll see how everything shapes up. Can I go back to what you said about Tampa? So we saw Baker give a four-minute answer about everything, the state of his relationship with the Bucs and how the Bucs are going to do this year.
38:06Pat McAfee:You mentioned that the Bucs aren't necessarily thrilled about the way he spoke about the franchise. Okay, so you've heard from somebody within the Bucs organization since this entire thing. How does that end up playing out? How does that whole thing end up working out here? Because Baker said he won't negotiate, and AJ and I hypothesized yesterday if they were to put a$50 million three-year deal in front of his face right now, would he sign that? I wonder if he would sign that. They already were offering over$50 million a year. That's not what he said. That's not what Baker said. Two years, wasn't it?
38:37They already, if you go back and look in Jeremy Fowler's story last night, hold on, hold on.
38:42Pat McAfee:Okay, so Schefter's got a good plug in the Buccaneers organization right now. I'm just telling you. No, no, but we need to understand that as we do this, we are about to get a lot of good information from the Buccaneers organization right now. Everybody needs to, let's strap in right here. Let's figure out how this is going to go. this is a big story. Jeremy Fowler last night reported the Buccaneers felt their offers in the final days of the negotiation were competitive, including a two-year deal worth slightly above $100 million in total. Guaranteed$15? I don't know what the guarantees were, but the offer was over$50 million a year on average, and I think the Buccaneers, that's their side, which is fair, and I think Baker's side is fair two years like if you're the franchise guy you deserve more than two years so that's part of the issue like Baker's got a point on the years I think the value is a little bit more than than was led on the Buccaneers have made an offer over 50 million dollars per year and Baker says it's shut down it's shut down and he's not going to talk now they can still franchise him at 47 million dollars this offseason which will be less than the 50 and then 57 the next year so essentially they have him for the next two years for 105 million with the franchise tag okay so and he said they don't want to do that because there's a lot of dead cap too if i he addressed that because obviously that was no no no no they're they're not going to just let him get to free agency i mean we'll see how it plays out but they have the franchise tag available and yeah but baker said they don't want to franchise tag me it's a lot of money and there's also a lot of dead cap that comes alongside that i don't know what he meant by that but i'm just saying he addressed that, the franchise tag in the entire thing, which I assume was a part of potential negotiations between Buccaneers and his people.
40:30Pat McAfee:Can you go back to what the previous thing we had up here? It had his, yeah, this one here. Okay, so his current annual average of$33.3 million is obviously... Below market, we all agree. Okay, thank you. Yes, I agree, but also great for Baker, whatever the stage Baker was in whenever he was there. And he acknowledged that. Thank you to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for making this happen. But if they offer him a three-year, let's say it's$150-something million deal, with over whatever, let's bump that up to 35. 35 times three is$105? $95. No, no, no. $105? So$105 is what they're going to owe him anyways if they do two franchise tags.
41:09Pat McAfee:So can't you just give him a three-year,$150-something million with$105 million guaranteed, and then hopefully that will kind of be out the door? Or do we think he wants like a five-year deal? I think he wants more years, whatever that is, whether that's three, four, five years. And the Buccaneers have offered a two-year deal worth over$100 million. It doesn't matter right now because he's adamant that he shut it down, that he's not going to do it in season. And he himself said, like, they didn't believe that I would shut it down, but I did. I said it had to be done by the start of camp or I'm not doing it, and he's not doing it.
41:41And I would say, I would promise you that if and when they reopen talks, if there's not a deal done ahead of free agency, I promise you a little franchising. I promise you that's going to happen. Dead cap, whatever issues, he's going to get tagged. So that's also coming if they can't get a deal worked out.
41:57Pat McAfee:Oh, yes. We got drama down there. And this might, honestly, you would automatically assume this would be bad for a franchise. Baker Mayfield, a little bit of heat in there. Yeah. Yeah, this might actually be good. Now, he's an adult. Obviously, he's at a different stage of his life now. He's a dad. He's a husband. He said he had to talk to some of the free agents that come in and let him know, like, hey, this is how I am. You might have a perception of me that is different than who I am. But if he's all in on ball and then also thinking that he's disrespected by the own building that he's in, and the building has a little bit of sauce with him as well, is that right you're going to be doing that?
42:29Pat McAfee:This might be a good thing for Baker Mayfield and Baker Mayfield alone. Every other quarterback, this would be a devastating type situation. For Baker, I think he lives in the kitchen if he has to. And when it gets hot in there, he starts cooking. That's why bake bakes, baby. Exactly. We appreciate you, Schefter. You're the man. Keep living in the fire, brother. Thank you, guys. have a great weekend let me hear a little cold play real quick if i could on the way out from you shefty and there's so many good songs they are awesome they are all yeah i'm just telling you if you haven't seen them in concert you have to go i think you don't know any of the songs i think you went because your wife's a fan you got the shirt and you don't know any of their songs blocks yellow i'm i don't know the names that i know all the songs when when they're on i can't that's all i am too that's what we want to hear we would like to hear it we'd like to hear what your favorite one is.
43:14No, you don't want to hear that. I'll take the Charlie Chaplin mode, okay?
43:20Pat McAfee:Oh, you're doing Coach Fangio. Yeah. Is that what he's doing right now?
43:23Jeff Passan:He is doing Coach Fangio.
43:24Pat McAfee:Who is doing Fox? Tony Fauci. Tony Fauci. That's what you're trying to do. Yeah, we're a little worried that becomes our entire life now because we asked Coach Fangio about 30 questions yesterday, and this is all he had to say. I'm going to be like Fauci and just take the Fifth Amendment on our questions. So, Shefty's doing that right now. Coldplay, you're the man. Ladies and gentlemen, Adam Schefter. I like what Fangio did. Me too. As soon as he gets down there. Yeah, I don't have a plan for this really, but I do want to say this. Did you see with that guy? It's unbelievable. What a fun time to be alive for all of us.
43:58Pat McAfee:Ladies and gentlemen, a man who's about to be joining us has a lot of information that we need. He better. Because there's a sport that actually matters right now. Not that it never did in the past. I'm saying right now there's a lot going on that really matters. This is a huge deal to the future of sports, definitely to the future of the sport. But also, like, what about America? What about the United States of America? Yeah, apple pie. And not just America. What about, I mean, we've seen it. Latin America loves it. Japan. Japan loves the sport. I mean, I don't know about any Europeans doing this thing.
44:31Pat McAfee:Australia's got the sport in there. Baseball is at a pivotal time right now. And there's one player, okay, that is potentially the entire linchpin on whether or not baseball continues or doesn't continue. And he just so happens to be a left-handed pitcher who used to be on the Tigers. He's still on the Tigers, but about to be on his way out. Tarek Skubal is about to be traded from the Tigers. if he ends up on the Dodgers and the Dodgers win the World Series, there will be a lockout shutdown of baseball for 15 years maybe. If Scooble goes anywhere else and does good, everything's okay. Scooble goes to the Dodgers, they lose, everything's okay.
45:18Pat McAfee:Scooble goes to the Dodgers, Dodgers win again, baseball's dead forever. That's what's being said, joining us now to tell us whether or not that's true or not. senior MLB insider for ESPN, pundit analyst, voice of a generation for America's pastime. Ladies and gentlemen, Jet Passing. Am I right on saying that, Jet? That's what I'm reading, and it feels like that is kind of what the case. If Scoops ends up with the Dodgers and they win, there's no way a deal's ever going to get done, nobody's going to agree, and baseball's over forever. Is that a little bit of a reaction, Jet? Because I'm reading that from a lot of people, Jet.
45:52Yeah, I think that's a little much, But this is the perfect storm of everything that's percolating in the labor space right now, is it not? You've got the Dodgers who aren't just dominant on the field, but dominant in terms of the money that they're spending. And for them to go out and get the best pitcher in the world and add him to a rotation that frankly doesn't need him at this point, just feels like a little too much. Especially when you look, Pat, at the other teams that are in the Tarek Skubal sweepstakes at this point. The Milwaukee Brewers, who you see their second favorite behind the Dodgers, the Brewers have an incredible farm system.
46:32They have the ability to do this, and they've done it in the past. In 2008, when they went out and got CeCe Sabathia, and he had an amazing second half of the season for them. It would be incredible to see Jacob Mizorowski and Tarek Skubal in the same rotation. reminiscent, if you will, of 2001 when Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling were out there leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a World Series championship. So this is going to be this is going to be a fascinating next like 96 hours or so before the deadline. And there's a lot of stuff still left to happen with Tarek Skubel.
47:09Pat McAfee:It was kind of it's kind of all reminiscent to what CeCe Sabathia did. It kind of took me back to that when he was with Cleveland and then the Brewers rented him. And then inevitably he gets hot. He's pitching every other day. He's dominant down the stretch. And then he ends up with the Yankees, right? Is that kind of why we're thinking some of these smaller market teams might actually be in the scoobal runnings? Because it's just a half a season rental, basically, before he gets paid somewhere else? Here's the thing, though, Pat. Generally speaking, those smaller market teams don't do big ticket rentals.
47:40Like, this is antithetical to their process. The reason that the Rays are where they are, that the Brewers are where they are, is because they keep their prospects and they bring them up and they have control of them for multiple years. So Matt Arnold, the Rays, president of baseball operations, Eric Neander, excuse me, Matt Arnold's with the Brewers and Eric Neander's with the Rays. This is a position that they're not used to being in. And why everybody in the industry believes that Scoobal will wind up with the Dodgers is the penalty for a trade like this. The penalty for the Dodgers is so much less because let's say that they trade away really good players and that Scoobal doesn't work out and they don't win.
48:22The Dodgers are still making a billion dollars a year and the Dodgers still have an absolutely loaded farm system. Whereas if you're the Rays and the Brewers, your lifeblood is those young, under-control, cheap players. And if you're giving them away for a guy who you're going to have for only two months, he better work. Like, this better be the sort of thing that winds up with gold on your finger, or otherwise you've done yourself and your franchise a long-term disservice.
48:50Pat McAfee:Well, good luck to all parties involved, and good luck to baseball. You know, I hope baseball gets the outcome that it needs here. You talk about the Dodgers, and if they win, everybody's going to be pissed. There has to be others. Go ahead, Ty.
49:00Jeff Passan:Yeah, Jet, who do you think is going to be the most aggressive at the deadline in trying to pick up a bunch of people to maybe try to supplant the Dodgers atop the baseball world? Because the AL seems like it's kind of more open than it's been in a long time. And if the Yankees keep trotting out this goddamn lineup that they have for the last couple weeks, I might kill myself. So what teams in like the AL and I guess even the NL are going to be very aggressive at the deadline, you think? Ty, the Yankees are everywhere right now. They're looking at catching. They're looking at relief arms. They're looking at bats.
49:39They understand that that lineup that they have right now is not going to be the sort of thing that can win a playoff games. Now, granted, they're going to have Cody Bellinger back. They're in all likelihood. They expect to have Aaron Judge back. They hope to have Giancarlo Stanton back. So this isn't quite the same, but they know they need a catcher. They keep getting tied to Luis Arise. I'm not sure where the fit is there because he wants to play second base. He's insisting on playing second base. And we've seen Jazz Chisholm at third, and it's probably not going to work. And yet the DH slot could be open for Arise right now.
50:15The Yankees are going to be busy. The Rays are, you know, they have lines out everywhere. In addition to Scoobl, you know, they're in with Freddy Peralta. They're looking for another starting pitcher. They're in on a rise. They're looking for a bat. They're looking for outfielders. Like, the Rays understand this is such a great opportunity for them because the AL is down. And there aren't many years like this where Tampa Bay is at the top and the dominant team. So I think they're going to be busy. I think the Red Sox are certainly going to continue to be. The Chicago White Sox have a lot of irons in the fire at this point.
50:55And the Texas Rangers, if they can get some money, they're going to be a player here too.
51:01Pat McAfee:I like that the White Sox are cooking. They got moonshot at Taka, Morikami. I mean, you want to get that guy into prime time. I hope he's playing in the big games lately. Stroking, baby. Yeah. Stroking. Stroking to East, stroking to West, baby. I love Moonshot Ataka. He was so nice to us. And the White Sox becoming a relevant team, obviously good for the city of Chicago. Now, there is a big-name Yinzer that's also available. Go ahead, Tone. Yeah, Jett. Mason Miller, the closer for the Padres. His name was very, very hot in the market maybe a week or two ago, and then it kind of feels like things have calmed down.
51:33I don't know because the Padres have – the bats have woken up a bit. They've won five of six or only two games back in the wild card. Can Mason Miller still be Deller or the Padres' recent success? are they not going to be selling anymore? So when Mason Miller's name was hottest, it was before teams understood what the ask was. And A.J. Preller, the president of baseball operations for the Padres, is very clear at the beginning of any deal about what he wants. Like he will communicate openly. And in this case, when he was talking with interested parties, he said to them, Nobody in your organization can be off limits.
52:13And so when you say something like that to the Mariners, for example, that means that Cade Anderson is in play. Cade Anderson's the best pitching prospect in the minor leagues right now. Do they really want to give him up for a closer? I mean, that was the kind of deal that the Padres made last year, getting Mason Miller and giving up Leo DeVries, one of the best prospects in the whole game. And the industry looked at that like, wow, that for a closer? Is that really the right thing to do? So what the Padres have right now, value-wise on Mason Miller, does not line up with what the rest of the industry sees.
52:47But we're still a few days away from the deadline, guys. And you know that prices go down. And if the Padres feel like they need to get more rotation pieces or they need to get another bat, Mason Miller and Adrian Morijone are going to bring back the most and would be, if either is dealt, the best relief pitcher on the market right now.
53:08Pat McAfee:all right jet we'll keep our eyes in our ears pinned mlb as this weekend's going to be a lot of action right that's what we're assuming monday at six this whole thing is uh is wrapped up so we got a lot of action coming in the next couple days we assume i'm not going to be sleeping much but i'm okay with that i like that we got some stuff over here that could help you our guy talk takes it if you need that he never started now his medically yours is just professionally you You got to do what you got to do. You're the best. Ladies and gentlemen, Jet Pass and the baby cap. Big day of baseball today.
53:42Pat McAfee:And DraftKings has a fun, fun special going on right now. Tone, can you tell the people a little bit more about a no sweat bet for any MLB home run bet today? And also, we lack a few guys up there. Go ahead, Tone. Yeah, as I always say, like before you're making bets on DraftKings, check their promotions that they have going on because they normally have one for every single sport that's going on that day. Today, you get a no-bet, no-sweat bet for any MLB home run bet today. So basically, you can put money on it. I think it's up to a certain amount that is based off of what you normally bet. And then if it does not hit, you get that money back.
54:22Yes, we do like a lot of people today. We each picked a guy. I'm going with C.J. Abrams of the Nats. He's got nine home runs in July. He's been absolutely raking. They're going against the Braves. Bryce Elder is going today. He's given up six home runs in his last three starts. So I like C.J. Abrams today as my no-sweat home rep. You like C.J.
54:42Pat McAfee:Abrams as your no-sweat bet. A.J. likes Sal Stewart against Paul Skeens. What's that all about, A.J.? I don't love that it's against Paul Skeens, but I like Sal Stewart that much. You know, the Reds are on a bit of a win streak here, so I think they're hot. We're going to continue. I like Bryce Harper. There's some website that tells you how the pitcher does. Ballpark pal. Yeah, ballpark pal, how a pitcher does against a hitter. This particular pitcher today against Bryce Harper, F-plus. Okay. Okay, so Bryce is going to want to hit a big dong, I think. Now, none of these are guaranteed, obviously.
55:14Pat McAfee:Ty likes Michael Bush. Why do you like him?
55:16Jeff Passan:Because he is also going against a guy who he should fare well against, Will Warren of the Yankees, who has pitched complete shit since the All-Star break. Wind's blowing out a little bit at Wrigley today.
55:26Pat McAfee:You're betting against the Yankees, though?
55:28Jeff Passan:I am. I am. I am. Yep, have to. So I've seen it with my own two eyes the last several weeks. I'm not going to be too proud to do it.
55:35Pat McAfee:And, Gump, you're going with Wilson Contreras. Obviously, he's going to hit a bomb, which we appreciate in your eyes. Remember, the reward is issued as a bonus bet that you have to use within seven days. So if you opt into this, then you utilize it as your bet. It'll be a bonus bet that you have to use within the next seven days. But it is no sweat, baby. However you're feeling, why don't you go for it? And I like Bryce, but I assume there's going to be plenty of dongs today. And any time DraftKings has given out a no-sweat one, let's go ahead and do that. Because there's been too much sweating on there already.
56:08Pat McAfee:That's right. This offseason's gotten hot. Pretty hot with the World Cup. Oh, how about that happen? I thought I knew what I was doing. Man, we're a good chunk there. Punchback. We were winning. Yeah, big, every time. First two weeks. Stars were showing up. And now football's back. We can't wait. But also, let's give one last run with baseball. Shout out to DraftKings. It's the best sports book on earth. No sweat bet. Opt in. Utilize the token. All right. Hour one wrapping up here on linear television. We'll be back in three minutes for an hour or two. That's going to be packed and stacked. We've got Schrags coming.
56:39Pat McAfee:Oh, hell yeah. Okay. He's got a lot to say. Yeah. How's he feeling about Malik Nabors running wild? I assume he's all zeeked up about what's going on in the New York Giants facility. And what drama does he know about that we haven't talked about yet? And is Aaron Donald signing with the Rams? That wasn't for me. That's somebody else. Yeah. I'm nothing but kind. Be a friend. Tell a friend something nice. It might change your life. See you in three.
57:05Pat McAfee:That's the sound of zero sugar, 200 milligrams of caffeine, and the power to burn body fat. Storm, energy for life. Storm Energy Blend helps boost metabolism, which in combination with exercise and a healthy diet helps burn fat. This product alone does not produce weight loss. Individual results may vary. 58:02Pat McAfee:We'll see you next time.
58:14day is fun. I know one coach kind of stole the shine and kind of has the most quotable situations going on. I tell you what, I'm on board for it as well.
58:21Pat McAfee:Are you talking about the national champion? Are you talking about the guy who kicked off the new NCAA game? Are you talking about the man who has been compared to the greatest coaches and the greatest leaders of all time because of what he's been able to do at Indiana University in Bloomington for football? Is that who you're talking about, AJ? I am talking about Coach Signetti, yes. A lot of people heard this quote about the SEC from Coach Sig yesterday where he's saying, let me just explain to you why we are the best, actually, versus the people maybe in a different place. The Big Ten is the best league in football and a lot of really good football teams.
58:58It's hard to win on the road. Very physical football teams, very well coached. It definitely prepares you for the playoffs. There's no doubt about it. The numbers speak for themselves. I mean, we don't run a hype machine up here in the Midwest. We believe everything's earned, not given. And when we fall short, we say we fell short. We don't cry a river, whine, and complain. All right? And that's why we're the best. Coach Cignetti, thank you so much for your time. Thank you.
59:30Pat McAfee:Yes! And that's why we're the best. Looks at the camera. All right? Coach Cignetti. Okay. Take that one to the bank. Didn't just talk about the SEC and the Big Ten. Also chit-chat about what life has been like on vacation the last few weeks at home with Mrs. Signetti. So I'm really excited. I've been on vacation long enough. You know, I'm tired of being bossed around by my wife. I'm ready to boss somebody else around and develop a football team. And it's all about development. Okay, player development, team development, positional development, and developing the intangibles, the mindset, and the identity of your football team.
1:00:12Pat McAfee:We'll dive into all these a little bit more because the amount of things he's saying that actually matter versus just funny clips are certainly kind of tied together there. Because, you know, a lot of people are saying this new NIL era and the transfer era, there's no development. You can't develop anymore. And Sig's like, hey, you just got a smaller timeline now. Okay, now we got to develop this as soon as possible. We got to get into this. And it's nice for me to go boss some things around. You know, all these quotes could potentially become the next Signetti quote, But never forget the first Signetti quote, which was reminded to him by one of the media members about maybe putting a patch on that new IU jersey.
1:00:43There's a lot of talk about sponsorship patches, so I wanted to pitch to you, since you don't have a ton of time, I want to get your thoughts on this patch for Indiana football, which is a Google logo and the word me. Is it going to make us better? But it might get you more interested. It might get you more money.
1:01:05Pat McAfee:Well, that guy had an opportunity there to say, yeah, Google's going to have to pay a lot of money. You might be able to get yourself a new roster. Well, I certainly listen. I think he would certainly do that. But I like that Sig knows, and I think Sig does, every time he's on a microphone, he is must-watch. And I don't think he's trying to live up to his own hype, and I don't think he's trying to be like that. I think this just comes natural to him. And I've never seen somebody more comfortable and confident being a head coach of a national champion football team than Signetti. and he got his starting job late, obviously.
1:01:35Pat McAfee:We all understand his story, where he was an assistant in Alabama. If he would have waited around, maybe he would have got a big-time job. Instead, he wanted to be a head coach. Goes to IUP. That's Indiana University of Pennsylvania. That is about an hour and a half outside of the city. We actually played against them one time in football, Indiana. We went up to that area. We had gone to IUP a couple times as high schoolers because that school is known for... Boozing? and STDs. I didn't say that. That's Tone Diggs. My brother went there. I can say that. Okay. Mikey Dogs. That was, but also, I mean, that was, I think there was a lot of schools potentially that were smaller schools.
1:02:16Pat McAfee:Yeah, the whole PSAC, yeah. Yeah, there was a lot of schools that were around there that were allegedly about... They were spreaded all over those schools, really? I think that was just like kind of what was said about each school by the other school, and then inevitably it just became like... All the PA state schools, yeah. Yeah, so we're like 16 years old. You know, we have a nice weekend. We're going to visit somebody that we know that's in school somewhere. No matter what small school it was that was within driving distance for us, everybody said, hey, watch out up there. They got nothing but STDs up there.
1:02:40Pat McAfee:So I think that's kind of how every school just kind of tried to demean the other ones. And I don't know if it was real or not, but I was worried, and I was appreciative of everybody that gave me a heads up. But Signetti was coaching him. He was coaching IUP. After coaching at Alabama, he was coaching IUP. Then, obviously, the James Madison story goes absolutely crazy. We have game day at James Madison, our show at James Madison. And this guy, who his dad coached at West Virginia, he played at West Virginia, is from Pittsburgh originally, obviously a paison who loves ball, gets on a mic in front of 30 ,000 people and go, do we like the NCAA?
1:03:15Pat McAfee:And they go, no. And I'm like, holy hell, this guy has got gut sack. Then our show, based here in Indianapolis, he gets hired to be the IU football coach, and we go, Sig, go back to IUP. Don't go to IU. Like, what are you doing here? and he had nothing but faith since day one that him and his guys could figure it out and they have he's talked his shit he's earned his place he's remained the exact same and his team loves him i mean his teams absolutely love him and there's a i thought there's no way they'll be able to run it back college football is way too hard okay it's way too hard you have to have so many things go right they got new pieces that they've just brought into their uh culture that are going to have to have huge games if they're able to do it then i listen to him on a microphone once or twice and I'm like you know what Indiana's about to win the next 10 straight national champions and that's how a sig makes you feel AJ it's legit that's never come from the Indiana University Hoosiers ever from a football perspective AJ yeah I think he got this Indiana job at the just the perfect time in his career he was clearly very ready to run a program like this the speed that he that he was able to get them to become national contenders is is unbelievable I mean I don't know if we've seen that before the fact that they were go 16-0 do everything they did last year, tested over and over again and continued to answer the bell.
1:04:33I mean, he feels, like you said before, very, very comfortable in his own skin. And he seems like he has this formula, whatever he has, like his leadership, how it goes, like he has it dialed in and he has all the right pieces around him. And I also credit to the Indiana, the people that do the hiring there for bringing Sig in to hire him. It has changed the course of this institution forever, I believe. So I give them a lot of credit.
1:04:55Pat McAfee:President Pam Whitten and athletic director, I should know your name. You've been very good to us. I do apologize. But got a chance to talk to the president in SIG's first year there. And she was at Georgia before being at IU. And she very much understands what sports can do for your university. And she was one of the main drivers of let's get a real coach here. Let's actually try to build this. And then obviously there are money people around the state, in literally the city of Bloomington. I believe there's a company called Cook or something like that, C-O-O-K, I think. They're a medical sales, maybe, company.
1:05:33Pat McAfee:They have been a massive contributor to what they are doing in all sports, certainly in football. Obviously there's the Mark Cubans who have also contributed in this entire thing. But then they also have the largest alumni in America. they have the most alive alumni in america and they have a great business school they have a dentist school they have schools that produce people who make you know not everybody's going to be a millionaire but if you're making 750 000 800 000 a year and you give 50 000 75 000 and there's 880 000 of those people out there which i think is the number of alumni that they have it's like it's crazy what real teamwork can happen in an alumni perspective for a team that really didn't exist.
1:06:16Pat McAfee:Now they got their own facility. They're building up the stadium. They got all this. And it was like, that wasn't like that four years ago. So the modern era is crucified for a lot of things. The modern era birthed a football university in Bloomington. And Signetti was the godfather of it all down there. And that's why whenever he could have left, he could have. He stayed. I think he knows what's happening in Bloomington. I think he understands what's possible. And he'll have a statue down there. And I think he wants Indiana to be forever, Not just with him being the head coach. That man can say anything he wants.
1:06:47As all those reasons that you laid out, he won a national championship and went undefeated at Indiana University in the second year. And it's arguably transitioned to the new NIL era better than any other coach in the country. But, boy, we talk about how great rivalries are for college football. He and what's been going on the last three years between the Big Ten and the SEC and what he did yesterday, just staring at an absolute hornet's nest in the South. And during the first video, it had Purdue as one of their prime matchups. And the SEC was like, okay, that says enough. Purdue is one of their prime matchups.
1:07:23And then the Big Ten came back and said Purdue scored the same amount of points as Alabama did against IU last year. The whole Big Ten SEC rivalry that's going on right now is awesome. I am here for it. I love Sig. I will side with him for now. But just the SEC having that. I'll tell you what. We're going to see how this team goes. We'll see how this year goes. But the SEC is having the dominance forever and now the Big Ten and now them just being – they can't handle it. The SEC can't handle it, and I love it. I'm eating it up right now.
1:07:50Pat McAfee:Yeah, it's good for sport, obviously. It'll be good for the emotions. It's also a lot of pressure on the South. You know, a lot of – not only win the SEC, be dominant SEC, but their fans are used to full dominance. So I think it's good. I think anytime there's pressure, anytime there's motivation, anytime there's competition is good for all parties. and the Big Ten certainly has a lot of reason to be very comfortable in their king spot. Three different Big Ten teams have won a national championship in the last three years. So whenever the SEC says, well, the depth or whatever, it's like we got three national champions in this just in the last three years.
1:08:23Pat McAfee:Let alone if Oregon goes. Yeah, that would be. Okay, so if Oregon goes, not that any of these other Big Ten schools want that to happen. Okay, obviously Indiana would like to win every single year going forward. But it's like if Oregon goes on a run and then next year SEC goes, yeah, but you guys don't have the depth. It's like we got four national – we got the last four national champions are in this. It's not just Bama or Georgia. Not that they're the only SEC. They need it down there, though. Like the SEC needs one this year because it's only going to continue to get out. Even if Texas gets it, like let's say Texas wins the national.
1:08:54They're a big 12 team. Yeah, exactly.
1:08:56Jeff Passan:That will happen immediately. That's the truth. You know, I mean, you hate to say it, but – and it's not just coming from a guy who went to a Big Ten school. But – Iowa stuff all in front of you. Exactly. And, you know, I mean, I won't pat myself on the back, but Iowa got beat by Oregon and Indiana by a combined total of, I think – What, six points? Yeah, it was like five points maybe. So, you know, they win those games. Maybe they get in the playoff as well. Maybe deserve to be in the playoff. Sig even said it himself yesterday. He said, Iowa, they were the most honor-rated football team in the country last year.
1:09:26Jeff Passan:So, you know, I mean, it's coming from the godfather himself. But I think a lot of people I saw, too, were just saying, like, you know, it's the NIL portion. And that because of Cuban, that's why Indiana's gotten so good. This guy is the best developer of talent in the country. Took a bunch of guys from JMU, brought them into the Big Ten, and they won a national championship. And even, like, Fernando Mendoza, it's not like he was a schlub when he was at Cal. But when he transferred to Indiana, no one was pointing at that and being like, oh, okay, Indiana went to the playoff last year. Now they have Fernando Mendoza.
1:09:56Jeff Passan:They're going to go win the national championship. They were like 25 or 24 coming into the season? Exactly.
1:10:00Pat McAfee:There was a lot of other schools picking other quarterbacks over Fernando. Correct. There was many other big schools that we know. I'm not going to put them on blast, but there's a lot of big schools that were thinking Fernando or somebody else and decided somebody else. So, you know, Sig just gets all the best players now.
1:10:19Jeff Passan:And now he's starting to, and that's what should be scary for everybody.
1:10:23Pat McAfee:Munch on sale.
1:10:24Jeff Passan:Yeah, exactly. Preseason number 20 last year.
1:10:27Pat McAfee:It's all about development. We're talking about the team. We're talking about the culture. We're talking about the players. We're talking about the coaches. That's what I want to worry about, development. What a legend. The SEC, though, sees stuff like this, though, and they go, I don't think so. Gopher fans, it is time to row the boat.
1:10:46Jeff Passan:Hell yeah. Hell yeah. Well, Minnesota sucks, so I get if they would do that. I mean, you know, but he's a snake oil salesman. You're not taking anything serious about that unless you live in Minnesota. I believe Brian Kelly was doing that shit, too, down in LSU. That's a good point.
1:11:00Pat McAfee:Yeah, but we got to remember, I like PJ. I think PJ has the Jews. He's done really well at that program. PJ got him a new facility, got him a lot of stuff. They do a nice facility. They have a beautiful facility. When he was at Eastern Michigan. Western. When he was at Western Michigan, he made one of those videos as well about a new third down. You remember that? Oh, yeah. He wanted them to get, you remember they wanted to do a third down. Bang, bang, bang. Yeah. Yeah. PJ is one of those innovative guys. He's an innovator. He's an innovative guy. He's kind of just been lost in Minnesota for a while, though.
1:11:33Pat McAfee:Yeah. Yeah. What if Minnesota goes on a national championship tag this year? You don't know. What kind of support do they have? Do we know what kind of financial support they have? It's probably middle of the road. I don't know how many players you can get with just raw snake oil. All right. Uncut snake oil. That's a good question. This is not. This is not. PJ is a good salesman. I will say. You know, we almost come into Minnesota whenever we're there. We had a great time over there. We thought about getting into the boat. Remember, there was a boat in there. Yeah, maybe you. Run that video back.
1:12:04Pat McAfee:You tell me you wouldn't get in the goddamn boat if you saw this right here in front of your face, please? Gopher fans, it is time to row the boat. Don't you want to just... That's like a scoreboard thing, right? That's like a third down scoreboard thing. That's not just like a one-off. What is that? Yeah, that's an ad win from the admin of social saying, hey, this is what we're getting into. And remember, the rowing of the boat became pretty big because the Vikings came over here. Yeah, he actually stole that from Odysseus. Did you see Odyssey? Not yet. I'm going to go Saturday. Oh, you Odyssey.
1:12:35Are you really? Oh, you walked right into that.
1:12:37Pat McAfee:Yeah, that was pretty good. That's a new one there, AJ. I Odyssey what? What's that? You didn't finish what you were saying. No, no, no, no, no. I think you and Dee understood everything that was kind of happening. Exactly. Yeah, it feels like it's all kind of coming together. there for you. Ladies and gentlemen, joining us now is a man who has all the info on everything happening everywhere. It's crazy. It's crazy. Yeah, it does, man. He does. How does he know? Well, because he works his ass off. This man's been sleeping on a catch for years so that he can earn his way to the top. And what did he do?
1:13:11Pat McAfee:Won an Emmy. Emmy Award winner. Now member of the Emmy Award winning NFL Live. Ladies and gentlemen, ESPN pundit and insider, Peter Schrager. Peter Schrager. What up, Schrager? Oh, what's up, fellas? I love that PJ video. I'll tell you what. There was a moment in time, probably three or four years ago, where he was the hottest name in NFL football. And it was, PJ Fleck is going to be the next guy. If they get back up there, that could be the conversation again. But that was a wild video. And that is what you have to do as a college football coach these days. Thank you. Yes, has to do that. Yes, he does.
1:13:49Pat McAfee:You see Sig doing any bullshit like that? Yeah, at the beginning he said, Ohio State. He did all that. He called a shot.
1:13:58Jeff Passan:He's not doing whatever happy bullshit that is. Okay, that's an Iowa fan. I saw Kirby. I think Kirby was doing that last week too. Was he? I don't think he was. Okay, well, that's not. Ryan Kelly was the famous with the rotating, you know. Yeah, that was neat. Yeah, a whole new voice. Okay. You remember he did that? Oh, yeah.
1:14:17Pat McAfee:P.J. Fleck has always been trying to drive up juice wherever he's at. I get it. Neckton mentality. Okay, so we always hunting like a shark. Never stop. Never stop. Always on the floor. We enjoyed P.J. Fleck. But, boy, nobody's talked about Minnesota in years. I mean, game day was out there. Remember? Yeah. The middle of snow. Yep. I thought they were going to go on a run. I guess you just can't keep up with everybody else's money, talent, and everything going on in the modern Big Ten that we live in. Now, on that note, we would like to wish good luck to P.J. and Minnesota and the Big Ten and to the SEC.
1:14:46Pat McAfee:Let's pivot to the NFL. Tampa Bay's not happy with Bay. Mike Bates not happy with Tampa Bay. We referenced his press conference yesterday during our going camping. He also had a side interview with Jeremy Fowler. We also think we saw him with Pete Briscoe. I think we saw Pete Briscoe sit down interview. And in all of them, he was letting people know that he was not pumped about everything that had happened during negotiations. Now Schefter's telling us that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have let the word out. We're not thrilled that he's doing this either. So this is franchise quarterback, 31-year-old quarterback, has won for you.
1:15:23Pat McAfee:And we all kind of know what the comps are and how much everybody should be paid at this stage. And they're not getting a deal done. And Baker's pissed. And they're pissed. What's going to happen, Shregs? And how does this end? How do you see this ending? And is this just going to be a tumultuous year that Baker's going to have to feed off the spite? And is Tampa Bay Buccaneers going to feel the same way? How do you kind of see this working out, you think? You know, it's funny because I've interviewed Jason Light, the GM, a thousand times. I know Greeny, not our Greeny, but Greeny in Tampa who runs the salary cap there.
1:15:54He's been there 20 years. And these guys, to a man, have never spoken about a player, a leader, or person like they talk about Baker Mayfield. This is maybe the most beloved player in that building since Brady left. leader everything man about town but also represents the right things hangs out with the offensive lineman and the hope was that this wouldn't be the way we start camp i think everyone in tampa is a little like whoa okay but this is baker to a to a t and if you know baker mayfield it's question me question me challenge me i'll bring it every time and that's been the story since he was at texas tech and they brought on competition and he left and he walked on at Oklahoma and ended up winning a Heisman.
1:16:40It's the same thing where, you know, Cleveland says we're better off without you. And he's like, all right, I'll make this roundabout way and I'll get back there. The question is$60 million. Is Baker Mayfield a$60 million quarterback? And in a lot of ways you say, well, I don't know, but in this day and age, if you have Baker Mayfield and he is the guy and he is representative of that city and is so good for that organization and has taken in the playoffs, pay them whatever it is, because in a year it's going to be 70 million, or in two years it's going to be 75 million. The salary cap keeps going up.
1:17:12But there is a budget, a salary cap, and a way that they have this pie. And I think the hope was that they would come to an agreement and that this would be one of those where, okay, Baker, let's keep it. Baker nipped it right in the bud. First day of training camp, get me in front of the first microphone I can. And oh, Jeremy Fowler, ESPN, you want me to do the PR message points? No, I'm going to say exactly why I deserve that money and why I think so. And it's years and it's time and it's average money. Gosh, as, as, uh, as an independent person and a capitalist and all this stuff, you have to appreciate Baker Mayfield saying, I want mine and I'm going to use this moment of time and you're going to give me the podium and I'm going to do it as a Buccaneers person.
1:17:50You're probably like, can't we do this behind closed doors? Does it have to go this way?
1:17:53Pat McAfee:Yeah. Well, I found it to be great because he had the Buccaneers flag right over his head. I mean, it was literally right had their jersey on yeah and it just sucks that this is how this fucking team operate it was just and that's your quarterback and that's baker but we did think they were kumbaya though oh yeah because just like you talked about like we talked to jason light as well and obviously we had ba in here last year he was very tight with the organization the way they view baker was like a godsend like we are very lucky and thankful for baker and baker baker heard all that as well week 18 against the Panthers in that monsoon.
1:18:27Baker's playing with a messed up shoulder. Baker's playing with an ankle that's all messed up. He's getting the crap, you know, gets up in the rain every single time. Just like, you cannot ask for a bigger gladiator and guy who leaves it on the field like Baker Mayfield does. And in the fallout of all that, all off season, it's like, we love that. This to me might even be more shocking than any other NFL news going on that Baker took the offensive. It was like, no, no. Okay, let's, hey, you want to go? We could be friends, but I'm also going to speak up when I think it's time. I find it fascinating.
1:18:58Pat McAfee:To your point, though, we like Jason Light. We trust him. We think he's going to do a good job, but, like, this is not great. Fita Vea's come out. He wants a trade. Baker's come out. He's not happy. It's like, that's a lot to deal with going into a football season where it's already hard enough to win. You know, it's already hard enough to win in the NFL. And then you look at the Saints. It's like the Saints are actually throwing a parade down there. I mean, they actually have a parade happening. It's like the NFL will not wait for you to figure out your drama. The NFL is going to continue. Last question from me before the boys have theirs.
1:19:27Pat McAfee:Patrick Mahomes running his ass off at practice. They're running options, fake pitches. He's duking people out. He looks nimble. He looks fast. Chiefs fans are wondering why he's running and getting a little negative about it. I just saw him double step on his left knee right there. I see him being very healthy. I love that they're doing this. I like that he looks this good this early. what is kind of the word out of camp that you're hearing not only about my homes but the rest of that team shrags yeah that he's ahead of schedule and looks amazing but how do you govern this during training camp because he is coming off the acl the the historically patrick mahomes has played in the second preseason game does it at arrowhead and plays the full first half and has a couple great plays and gets the fans excited i think is going to be a really interesting decision do you put him out there in the preseason this year do you let him even do that because it's just what he's always done or do you gradually ease him into this and say you know what why don't we just do the practices we don't need to put you against live bullets in a preseason game where someone might be wanting to make a point and try to make a roster um they've never protected my homes in any way like that they've always let him just be my homes he's a you know a bird that's you know a caged bird go free in the preseason do you that's right whatever this year i wonder if they govern it a little bit and see hey maybe we don't need to see you in the preseason let's start week one and let's go there when you play Denver on Monday night AJ you see the same thing as me right that first clip zoomed in he does a double bounce on his knee could have got over right there could have got over his toe it's like the amount of strain that is on that knee and that double hop right there immense would hurt so bad if you had any pain going on yeah and then afterwards him skipping there's no lame there's no lameness in that left knee I mean he is bopping around right there it might be a little stiff because he has a entire brace on it but he's skipping i think yeah this is a guy who feels very good about where he's at i think that should be good news not bad news personally but i do appreciate chiefs fans going andy come on pat you said you weren't gonna do this put him in a bubble out here it's like i think he needs to see where he's at and i think as soon as i see that if i'm a teammate of his or if i'm a fan or anybody i'd be like yes he is very healthy for this particular time because there wasn't that long ago that we saw a highlight of him rolling to his left and throwing where Dr.
1:21:41Pat McAfee:David Chow came and said, TBD on if he'll be, you know, week one or whatever. And then now you kind of see him skipping around. It's like, yeah. Mahomes is just like we thought he was. Middle of that dance floor. I was going to ask. You saw it. Yeah. It was very early just watching like, geez. All of the Chiefs are here. Doctors, coaches, everybody. And Patrick's going to town up there in front of everybody. At some point, somebody would say, hey, you can't be like that. Just like the Malik Nabors softball thing, the amount of people that had to let him onto that field, I think you heard me and AJ say he had to be let out there.
1:22:18Pat McAfee:Now, obviously, it looks terrible, but he had to be let out there. On the Giants beat, Ty actually has a question for you about all of that.
1:22:25Jeff Passan:Yeah, Schraggs, I mean, a little bit of that. In terms of when you look at what they are doing, Cam Scadabo, is he going to be their go-to guy this year? We know their backup is very good. And we had Art Stapleton on yesterday who said, listen, everyone likes Jackson Dart and they're excited about him. But the way Harbaugh is, they want to be a run-first offense. Do you think Scadabo, everything's good with him? Again, I know you saw it, Fanatics Fest. He does the backflip. It doesn't look great. He's had a bunch of stuff like that this offseason where he's kind of showed hey the the leg is good what do you expect uh out of him going forward this year i was actually surprised the giants didn't go big after just getting another running back in free agency just because they've built up every other spot of the roster and that one still might be a question mark scadaboo was awesome in his limited time last year tyrone tracy does things inside the numbers but also can be a pass catcher and of course you've got some of the veteran guys that are still there but there's going to be a big microscope on those two guys scadabo and tracy because harbaugh and greg roman and matt naggy to a point those are running guys like they want to control the ball and they're going to use dart in that way but like you need to have a bell cow remember when greg roman was with the ravens it was mark ingram and then of course you had you know lamar and you had all these different running backs that were doing the job and then yeah and then you go through all these different players that Nagy's had over the years as much as they've been a passing offense in Kansas City a lot of that was hey big game Dame Williams is in the backfield and we've also got Clyde Edwards Hilaire like this doesn't strike me as a Jackson Dart throw the ball 50 times a game team so the running game is going to be massive and it's got to be helpful to see some
1:24:19Pat McAfee:league members are going to be pissed anyways I just thought about the Baltimore Ravens wide receivers coming out publicly and saying, why are you going to have dogs if you're never going to use them? And then, oh, no. Who was that? Who said that? No, that was one to Arizona. Hollywood. Was that Hollywood? Yeah. Deep threat, right? Was it Hollywood? Yeah. So is everything going to be okay with Malik Neighbors, who, once again, you put him above Terry McLaurin. I think that was last year. Last year at this time. Yeah, last year. And I still will. Which, by the way, every Giants person we have talked to has echoed your sentiment like, yeah, he is.
1:24:55Pat McAfee:If he can put it together, he will be. Do we think Malik Nabors is going to have another breakout year for the Giants, especially if they're going to have success? Or is this going to be something he's going to have to get used to of being Patrick Ricard, Tracy, Scadaboo, Big Motor Devin Singletary, Devon Singletary also there. So whenever you think about the run game versus having an ultra talent that you all have said is top four, top five in the NFL, So the rest of the league, we haven't seen it much. You know, I think we haven't seen it much. We're excited about the opportunity because he looks like an absolute monster, of course, and his highlights are outrageous.
1:25:30Pat McAfee:But how do you think that all works out? And how do you think Harbaugh is handling the entirety of this new Giants franchise with a lot of expectations very quickly? Well, I think one of the reasons Harbaugh took the job was talents like Malik Neighbors. This cupboard was not bare, and Malik Neighbors has the opportunity to be a top five wide receiver in this league, if not better, over the course of his career. unbelievable talent breakout game against the Colts that we're seeing here two years ago of course gets injured in unfortunate fashion but the sky is the limit and the fact that he's actually running routes and moving and with the team at Greenbrier is an amazing thing and I believe that I would have no fears if I'm in fantasy football or if I'm a Giants fan and that just because they like to run the ball that neighbors isn't going to get his load of action too if anything I would expect him to be the focal point of the offense and then the running game to compliment him.
1:26:20Pat McAfee:I'll tell you what, good run game is great for a deep throw. Great for a deep throw. Load that box, baby. You got Patrick Ricard, massive body. You got Scatterboot, massive body. You got Jackson Dart, massive body. You're going to need humans down the box. Got likely also now. Which, yeah. Drafted Maui Noah and moved him inside the guard. Are you guys in on Giants? It's such a funny, I'm in New York and it's such a funny topic because anyone wants to talk about it and it could be anything from we're going to win 10 to 12 games to we're already too hyped and we're going to win six games. Where do you feel on it, Pat?
1:26:53Pat McAfee:I think Giants fans probably have a little bit of sense of being jaded, you know, with everything that has kind of happened through it all. I mean, the McAdoo years probably were a little bit difficult, especially coming out of everything that you had. And, you know, the Eli Manning kind of exit and how that whole thing ended, debacle, I would say. And then, obviously, the hard knocks inside saying, Saquon ain't worth that, man. Get him the hell out of here. And then, you know, obviously Saquon going on to be the MVP. So I think, like, Giants fans probably have had a lot of examples and reasons to not believe.
1:27:25Pat McAfee:I think that's probably why some are still negative. I just like how positive Giants fans seemingly are. Like, I think Giants fans being this positive is pretty wild to kind of experience because I don't know what you're going off of. And they're like, well, before injuries, like when this guy wasn't hurt, he was unbelievable. When this guy wasn't hurt, he was unbelievable. Now, technically, in theory, we're all back together with a better coach. We should be good. And I'll tell you, I'm a buyer. I believe it. I've been with Bruce a lot throughout this entire – I believe they're going to be good, I think, because I respect John Harbaugh as well as, like, a winner.
1:27:54Pat McAfee:Do I think they're winning the Super Bowl? No, no, I'm not doing that. I think they're going to win the division. You got them winning the NFC? Yeah. I actually picked them to win the ECSV on Hampton. Yeah. As did I. I'm not laughing. I think it's possible.
1:28:07Jeff Passan:They were 18-1 last year this time. This year they're sitting there at 6-1. So, I mean, you know, the sportsbooks think it's a rosier picture as well. as well. I think part of it, though, also is just that the Eagles and Cowboys are always going to be, you know, pretty good programs, good institutions, and it's always going to be a challenge for the New York Giants. And yeah, we've been in hell since we fired Tom Coffin, basically. But yeah, it's as good a team, at least in the offseason, as good of a feeling as a Giants fan going into a year that I've had in a long time.
1:28:42Pat McAfee:So, Shrigs, I think you're hearing a Thunderdome that's certainly believers, but if it's all ass, you know, I will certainly say, I can't believe I fell for this shit. First two games. What's that? First two games. Sunday night against the Cowboys. That's a litmus test. Let's see how this defense looks. And then they go to LA. And they play the Rams on Monday Night Football. Two nationally televised games. And what I would say was the offseason of John Harbaugh being treated like the Pope or something in New York. You would think this guy is coming in. He's Phil Jackson with the 11 rings. It's amazing.
1:29:13It's like, oh we got we got John Harbaugh so it's done like we're good they have to actually go win these football games now I would add this when it comes to the Giants Reese is very exciting I don't know how they're going to use him Abdul Carter had some moments last year let's see if he's going to be good Thibodeau like you have all these guys in the front seven that are freaks that were top 10 picks if they can put it all together and then the offense is better yeah they should be competitive They should be talking about playoffs, not just talking about being an over 500 team.
1:29:44Pat McAfee:Well, congratulations to the Giants fans. Let's go get it this year. Over under seven and a half. Feels like sportsbooks are like, let's do reality here. Okay, that's what they're saying. For sure. But it feels like everybody in here is pumped about the other side of that. Okay, let's move along, shall we? Tone has a question for you, Shreggs. Yeah, Shreggs, let's talk about a team that's not being talked about, and that would be the Jacksonville Jaguars. And Liam Cohen talked about it this week, that he's looking at all these websites and all he's seen is pictures of Caleb Williams and nothing on the Jacksonville Jaguars.
1:30:13I saw that you talked to him this week and you're talking about Travis Hunter, who looks very, very good. He looks like he's put on some really good weight. What are your thoughts on the Jaguars and what did you get from Liam Cohn when you talked to him this week? Liam's a master motivator and he knows exactly what buttons to press and what to do. And when he showed up to camp this year, he had spent weeks building up to this point of how I'm going to express and communicate to our team what we can be. and I think a lot of this they're leaning into this hey we're the 32nd market they don't want us to be the guys they're talking about in the Super Bowl they don't want to believe in us but look how good we are and look how much we're ascending Trevor Lawrence and him had an outstanding offseason and then they have these four wide receivers and I'm including Travis Hunter who by the way they will be using at wide receiver and who ran even though he had the injury 23 miles per hour during practice the other day when they clocked him but between Parker Washington who everyone says is the first guy in, last guy to leave, the worker horse.
1:31:09You got Thomas Jr., of course. You've got Jacoby Myers, who's your possession guy. Now you got Travis Hunter as your wild card. We don't know how they're going to use him. Four great wide receivers, a great offensive coach, a number one overall pick, and a defense that had to say goodbye to Devin Lloyd, who they absolutely loved, but they have a lot of young guys that they're really feeling good about. So it's funny. You go city to city to city. Jacksonville's one we're not going to do a ton of talking about because it's not this national team. But remember, they gave the Bills everything they could handle, and they bring back just about everybody else except a running back and a linebacker, and they got better this offseason.
1:31:45So I am excited for Jacksonville. It might be my early AFC Super Bowl pick.
1:31:49Pat McAfee:Wow. We like that. Wow. We like that. I don't know if ESPN and Disney are doing flips over at Jacksonville Super Bowl in their first year, but I am. Yeah. Well, I mean, ESPN is putting a lot. whoever's in the Super Bowl, it's going to feel Johnny. We're getting some early looks at things that are happening. To say a company is going rather big on something would be an understatement. I mean, this is going to be a movie. Obviously, it's a Super Bowl, so it has to be. We get a chance to look at some of this stuff. Jeez Louise. And it's Los Angeles, so the amount of opportunity. If Jacksonville's in that Super Bowl, I think we will all certainly be pumped because of the tale that could be told depending upon who they're playing.
1:32:34Pat McAfee:Can you imagine Jacksonville, Los Angeles Rams in there? Oh, my God. And then Liam and Sean are best friends, so that's actually fun. There's a storyline there. Well, a storyline would be the Avengers take on a team from Duval. They're playing in Orlando. They're leaning into it so much, though. Like, this is every – it's like playbook, and it's just, hey, if this is the hand we're dealt, we are going to play into that. And they'll talk about how many primetime games they've been given. Liam works with a guy, John Gordon. Do you know John Gordon? J-O-N, yeah, no H. Yeah, he's a motivational speaker.
1:33:10He's also a guy who's a connector and is a man of faith. And Kevin O 'Connell, Sean McVay, Liam Cohen, Chris Shula, all these guys. It's almost like he's their Svengali, if you will. They go to him in the offseason. Hey, I want to put together my thoughts, my visions. And he puts together basically what is your vision board for your team. When you come in to him, you tell him what do we want to be? How do we want to – and Liam spent a lot of time with John Gordon this summer. And I believe they're going to come out and they're going to be motivated. They're going to be on the same page. And I believe these guys buy in.
1:33:42Like they believe in Liam. And they love the fact that he went up against Salah last year in that postgame. They love the fact that he barks a little bit. So this Jaguars team is one of these smaller market teams with a giant chip on their shoulder. And I can buy into that.
1:33:55Pat McAfee:I'd like to – I love Liam Cohen. I love the Jacksonville Jaguars. Good luck. It's going to be a tough road in the A.C. sauce. Yeah, you're right. Let's never, ever forget about that, especially with Danny Dimes being back. I'd like to know a little bit more about John Gordon here, okay, because anytime I'm here and somebody is helping shape – there's only 32 jobs. These NFL coaches are some of the greatest motivators, leaders on earth. If they believe somebody else can assist them, I think that's a massive compliment. Now, John Gordon is a motivational speaker. What is John Gordon? Author. He's an author.
1:34:30You know like Ryan Holiday? Those type where you read these books and it kind of centers you. This is the guy, John Gordon. This is who they believe. I love the image. Tim Tebow. All these guys go to him and it's like this council ship almost. And a lot of it is faith-based. And John will talk to them about let's ground you and let's build up what you want to be and then let's build it around your organization so we can set the culture for the team. and we might think it's a bunch of hogwash, whatever, but... Who's we? Whoa!
1:34:59Pat McAfee:I'm talking about... That sounds like that. That sounds like that. We're pretty big, right? There's a we. Hey, that's not the pronoun we're looking for in this particular conversation. We have not met John Gordon yet, okay? You could use I and me if you would like, but the we in this particular setting, not accurate. There could be cynics. That's all I'm saying to any of this stuff, but if you're a real leader and you look to other leaders, he's the guy they go to. I love that we're doing a whole thing. I was just mentioning his name. John Gordon is one of the most influential and sought-after leadership authors and speakers today.
1:35:27Pat McAfee:He's a consultant to numerous leaders, CEOs, NFL, NBA, and MLB coaches, championship teams, and high performers, and an inspirational teacher who has helped millions and millions of people have a more positive mindset. He's the author of 32 books, including 19 bestsellers. Holy shit.
1:35:46Jeff Passan:Modern-day Tony Robbins? No, I was going to say more like the modern-day Joel Osteen. No, I was thinking more like the modern-day Gandhi. That's high praise Is this guy Shinzu? Sunzu? Who did Shrek say earlier? Who did he compare him to? Ryan Holiday? Yeah, he did say he's kind of their Svengali
1:36:04Pat McAfee:Svengali, a shaman if you will Oh, a guru, this guy Hey, congrats, John We appreciate what you're bringing to the NFL Now, gotta keep eyes out on his teams How they do Minnesota Rams Jacksonville The John Gordon Network. Minnesota. The John Gordon teams. The other guys hate him or what? Does he work with Big Daddy? Shregs, do you know that? Big Daddy of Coastal Advisors? No, I don't know if they have any.
1:36:36Pat McAfee:Best life insurance man in the game. Okay. We've been told. All right, yeah, we've been told. He also put a Batman mask on himself because we called him Vigilante, so we respect that. Speaking of Vigilante football, there is a huge storyline that kind of came out of nowhere for us. Dan Orlovsky came on the show and talked about Max Crosby. Is he going to be a Raider at the end of the season? Then Jerry Jones comes out and says, Hey, listen, I'm dealing the future for today. I'm making a big, big prospective move here. And everybody's like, that's Max Crosby. That's Max Crosby. Then he came out and said, I didn't say Max Crosby.
1:37:09Pat McAfee:I don't even know Max Crosby because I don't want to tamper anything. Why is his name up?
1:37:12Jeff Passan:Ty has a question for you. Yeah, Schrags, are you hearing that Max Crosby might be available again? I think when that trade got rescinded with Baltimore, we were all just assuming like, okay, you know, he's going to, he put out the Raider way song. We assumed he's going to be a Raider for life, but is there a chance that he gets dealt like before the season gets started here? Like are the Cowboys in play to potentially get him? And if it's not the Cowboys, like is, is he's kind of, are they, are the Raiders still shopping him? They've already traded him once, I suppose. So maybe they'd be willing to do it again.
1:37:43Jeff Passan:But what are you hearing about Max Crosby? All I hear right now is how it's Kumbaya over there and he's excited to be a Raider. and let's pretend that whole thing never happened. Let's turn the page and let's just tackle a new challenge here with the new coaching staff and new quarterbacks and the whole thing. But you better believe if this team starts out not necessarily in playoff contention, come the trade deadline, his name's going to be the number one name because they've already traded him once. I don't think this is like Jerry last year where it was like he was looking to get someone and he was trading Micah Parsons.
1:38:13I don't think there was any breadcrumbs there. I would be surprised if Crosby is traded before the season starts. it seems like he's on board and they're on board. But as we always say, it's a week-to-week season. And with the trade deadline looming, if they traded him once, they could definitely trade him again.
1:38:28Pat McAfee:Yeah, but he's putting out a lot of stuff saying how much he's a Raider. Don't we think that he would not? It's not from his side. Well, wouldn't he be hearing from the other side then that he's at least, I don't know, man. Do you think they would reach out if they came in? I think there's a new coaching staff, fresh start. I feel like it's all love right now. It would be tough, wouldn't it, Pat, though, to tell him, like, hey, I know you're multi-talented and you do all this, but easy on the Raiders gear, you know, the Raiders stuff. We might be shopping you a bit. Hey, we heard the sample, we think, Raider Way.
1:39:01Pat McAfee:We're deciding what that looks like actually going forward, not you anymore.
1:39:07Jeff Passan:Take the song down. No. Okay, Plackboy Max is fine. Take Raider Way down now. By the way, Pat, can I interrupt?
1:39:14Pat McAfee:Kind of a banger, both of them. Got some breaking news for you. What? What? What team? what team so we can be ready john gordon's going to speak with the saints next week whoa shit did that just come in your phone yeah it seems like john gordon just texted shrieks john gordon was not with a team source wow watching the program and said hey john gordon's coming here this week hey thank you for getting us chris uh olave on monday too whoever's watching the show from there. We appreciate that. Chris Olave will be joining us on Monday. We appreciate that. And we'll certainly ask him about his time with John Gordon if he's already been down there.
1:39:56Pat McAfee:That will certainly be something. What's this guy saying?
1:39:58Jeff Passan:I don't know.
1:39:59Pat McAfee:This guy's got the goods. He does. 35 books. That's a lot of words. 19 bestsellers. Geez, a lot of good words it seems like. If any office needed it, it's ours. Let's get him in here. We cannot disrespect John Gordon. I didn't say we were going to disrespect him. Yeah, I'm saying we will, though. As soon as he walks in here, I assume there will be some questions. I need him more than, oh, boy. You need John? I need guidance, man. I need some guidance. I need guidance. Okay, Shreggs, you want to come out here for when John walks in here so we can have maybe a little whole team kumbaya? Let's learn about life.
1:40:28Pat McAfee:I'll hold hands. We'll do a drum circle, whatever you need. I'm a lot. This guy's going to be expensive. I can already tell. Yeah. Just looking at this, I can already tell he's going to be expensive. He said pro bono for this one. I don't think he ever will say that. From this particular line of work, I don't know if that actually ever happens. So, what do we need? Do we need bleachers? Do we need seats here? We need – Yeah, risers. We need pews. Pews, pews, pews. Can't we do the same setup we did for that cowboy that wore the thong? Yeah, a little roundy. Yeah. A little roundy setup. You're right.
1:40:59Pat McAfee:The singing man of grammar. Yeah, AJ's favorite friend. Pews. Okay. AJ took him home that day. It was weird. All right, so John Gordon team is Minnesota, Rams, Jacksonville, New Orleans. Okay, a lot of NFC teams. College teams, too, I believe. He needs to go to North Carolina. Stat. Maybe he's already been.
1:41:21Jeff Passan:No, he doesn't. I wish it wasn't the case, but it sounds like that might be the case. What country do we live in? America. Yeah, until proven guilty, okay?
1:41:33Pat McAfee:All right. Hey, listen, good luck to all parties down there, of course, and we will keep our ear to the ground, but maybe John Gordon does offer up his services to Chapel Hill. Just a little bit. What do you think he says, Shregs? What do you think, Ivan? I know. These guys, they love him. I mean, McVeigh flew across the country in the middle of the summer to go meet with John Gordon. I'm telling you, it's real. Hold on. This might be it. We're reading the back page. Don't let negativity, pessimism, challenges, and change sabotage your team and organization. The Power of Positive Leadership program is designed to help your leaders thrive by developing a resilient mindset, leading through change, improving communication, and fostering a positive culture of accountability and connection.
1:42:11Pat McAfee:A John Gordon certified trainer, hand-selected for their expertise in positive leadership, will bring in this powerful training to your organization. Oh, so we don't get John. We get somebody. I'm a John Gordon trainer. Boy, you want to talk about snake oil. Here it is by the gallon. He probably makes a killing in corporate offices. Oh, God. The C-level. We're getting one of his capos sent in here, though, just to kind of do like some recognizance. I like it. Hello, Navartis. Hey, that was not true. That is not true what he said back here. No, it's not. You think all these incredible leaders, CEOs, NFL teams, MLB, NBA, thought changers, provokers, all go into the wrong spot?
1:42:51Pat McAfee:I got it. Sean McVay's not buying snake oil. Hey, John, exactly. Exactly. KOC's not buying snake oil. Exactly. Now, if he got a couple other coaches, I would change my tune, but. Well, anyways, John Gordon, we can't wait for you to come in here, man. We'll put you right here, maybe. Yeah. Right here, right? Dude, I love this. I will fly in for this. Okay, Shregs, we'll put you front row, Shregs. Shit, you might sit on this one right here. I need it! Okay, we'll just maybe sit in these things. That's not a bad idea. Kind of just let him work. We'll put AJ in the big thing here. Mm-hmm. I think we have to be hand-selected to potentially receive this, though.
1:43:25D-Bone needs to be front row as well.
1:43:27Pat McAfee:D-Bone's not listening to a word this guy said. He put on the mic. He doesn't have ears. You've said that. Yeah. AJ, you didn't get to see it the other day whenever he was operating that jib up there at ESPN. There was obviously some people very worried about him. Pretty expensive jib. Yeah, yeah. So he did. He did do. He didn't wreck anything. He did. He did good. We appreciate him doing that. These fine people who certainly knew what they were doing and had a lot of vested interest in it were trying to talk to him and tell him what to do. And I was trying to explain to him, like, hey, that guy's ears actually do not work.
1:44:00Like, they're sitting there, but they don't really take it.
1:44:03Pat McAfee:He's kind of got to figure it out himself. Like, that's just kind of the type of person he is. You can tell him something for six months. It's just not going to. He didn't eat a chicken nugget until he was, like, 25 or something because just, you know. Still hasn't had eggs. Doesn't know what eggs taste like. Ty and I watched him try to stuff pork sausages into his ears the other day because he couldn't fit any more in his mouth. Exactly. So that's what we're talking about. So I don't think even if John Gordon comes in here, those things will ever be able to operate. Even if we say to him, hey, everybody on earth is trying to listen to this guy, Bode would be like, I don't care.
1:44:33Pat McAfee:He gives me the ick. Leadership actually gives me the ick. He's not willing? You're saying he's not willing to listen to anything like that? He's not a willing participant with his ears. Since birth, I'm assuming. I don't think this is a new thing, but I think he was born with the incredible trait to just kind of flip the switch on his ears. And he still hears, like, the world, but just, like, anything to him doesn't make it in. It's like the parents in Charlie Brown. Exactly. The teacher. It's the boy. And to him, it's just kind of like background tracking. Exactly. As he just kind of goes through it.
1:45:07Remember when he was sweeping and Cody Rhodes came in? Exactly. Oh. Well said. Well said. Great memory.
1:45:15Pat McAfee:Yes, Shregs. That entire situation is a perfect depiction of these things just being flaps on the side of his head. But on that note, great work, Bowne. You're an artist. He's an artist, Shregs. He's an artist. Gotta remember that. Love that guy. Yeah, we have to. Everybody love everybody. You know what else? Hey, Shregs, it's Friday. We'd like to, you know, We're not the innovators of this entire thing, but it's nice to showcase the highlights of the week. Would you like to stick around with us and do that right now? I would be honored. I'll just be quiet and lay out. No, no, no, no, no. I need you to be active.
1:45:55Okay, I'm in. Active listener.
1:45:57Pat McAfee:Not too active, though, because you're in a different place, and AJ's in a different place, and we're in a different place. So it's not easy to kind of... Don't be scared of your chest hair this time either, Sean. that's that would be being see that was rude notice the shirt own that it's rude own that hey i will say you had good chest hair and when you were trying to cover it up you missed like five of them that were doing this number here which we respected but it seemed like you didn't really want the world to know about dude we like the fact that you're just you know alpha man over there yeah yeah shrags we like that over there okay these are uh some things that aren't asked Here we go, here we go.
1:46:35Pat McAfee:You know, a lot of camp highlights, obviously, because football is back. Let's go down to Carolina. Jalen Coker. One-handed grab. Shimmy shake. Has a guardian cap. No gloves. Give me that. Now, he created it a little bit so people will judge, but him not wearing gloves and having his gloves in the back of his pants, I appreciate. AJ, if you could do it with no gloves, you could certainly do it with gloves on. I like he's making the world harder on himself and then showing up still. No question. You just got to make sure if you're not wearing gloves and they're tucked into the back of your pants, you better make that one-handed catch in practice.
1:47:07Your coach will be pretty upset.
1:47:08Pat McAfee:Yeah, this is the people who have their hat backwards doing this number here, you know, trying to block the shit. Yeah, certainly me as well. Or sunglasses on top of head as you can't see anything. Maybe a fly ball is coming. Gloves literally on you, in your uniform, tucked into your pants. You're lucky you catch that. Coker knows it. He's a dog. He got paid this offseason. He's probably feeling very confident. the perfect number two to Tett McMillan. Shregs. Holy cross. Wow. I like that, Shregs. That was a good drop in. But I was going to say to you, Sean Payton out in Denver, he got a weapon.
1:47:42Pat McAfee:Mr. Waddle in Miami was certainly overlooked. He's a talent. And hey, give me that. Big Guardian cap on. Feels like that's a new norm for everybody at training camps in the NFL. Hopefully it'll keep people safe and not make it worse. But Jalen Waddle, one-handed grab. Shregs, I feel like that has been an afterthought in the NFL conversation. about Bo Nix picking up a number one? Amidst all this A.J. Brown talk for months and months and months, very quietly, Jalen Waddell swapped teams and goes to a team that was a couple plays away from the Super Bowl. They are so excited. Peyton can't stop raving about them, and he joins Cortland Sutton and Mims in a good little receivers room.
1:48:17I am excited to see, and this is a good sign.
1:48:19Pat McAfee:Yeah, I think it's a great sign. Now let's go over to Cincinnati. Obviously, we've seen a lot of fights. How about Andre? He's the guy. Wow. Wow! Toe drag swag, I believe is what Nate Burleson says. Now, I do like the pants cut off in the middle of the thigh. You know, I would like to have the tightness of the pants on. I like the look of my thighs. I got a good little definition in the offseason, doing one-legged squats and split squats. And look at the toe-foot control in the highlight green shoes. This guy's got a lot of moxie, a lot of pizzazz. I like what we're doing here in Cincinnati. Yeah, Tyler Boyd used to be the number three there.
1:48:58It was incredible there. Now, Andre Stepson, he's the number three. He's had a couple good years in a row. Sees a lot of single coverage in that offense.
1:49:05Pat McAfee:Yeah, with T and Jamar, obviously, out there. Contract year, I believe, as well. Yeah. Oh, big time. Insane college career at Princeton and was a track star. Just an awesome kid and awesome talent. Zach Taylor loves him. Great. Princeton drop. Love it. What was the first one? Holy Cross? Yeah. Holy Cross. Bob Cousy style. Are you in the ESPN Jeopardy show? I am. Who asked you to do it? We've been trying to figure that out. How'd you get asked to do it? Was that a Joe Buck invite, or who did the invite there? It might have come through Buck. It was around NFL draft. I got an ask when I was at the draft if I would fly to L.A.
1:49:43to do it the next week or something. I'm like, hell yeah, let's go. It was awesome.
1:49:46Pat McAfee:We're happy you're in that. We would like to say, hey, Suits, you scared? You're a little scared of Ty Schmidt coming in there and eating your absolute lunch in that entire thing? We got no invites out here to the Thunderdome. Feels like everybody at ESPN is representing except for our show. So we can only take it as the suits are scared to death that this Al-Wahawka, this man who has the ability to have 16 Red Bulls before a show. Only two today. Congratulations. Thanks, Eli. Hey, it was a big step for you. I know. Pretty proud of you. No invite to the Thunderdome. Can I tell you? We're going to have to watch this to see.
1:50:22Go ahead. The buzzer really is like the whole thing. Because you all know the same, you know, we have the stupid sports brains. We all know everything. It's the almanac. But, like, to get the buzzer in there, Ty, do you rise to the occasion in those moments? Could you be able to just, like, say I'll have my best day in the biggest moment? Or do you think a buzzer would mess you up?
1:50:38Pat McAfee:Shregs, is he a Big Ten angler? Is he a video game player? Is he on a stage in front of people every single day? Yeah. I think so, Shregs.
1:50:48Jeff Passan:Yeah. I certainly wouldn't be worried about the buzzer. I think that's one of those things where you're going to have to adjust. If you're not getting in early, it's like, okay, let's kind of reframe how we're doing this year. But, no, I would be very confident. I'm excited for this. And we are very pumped to watch. We are very excited to watch. I won't give you a spoiler, but I'll give you a spoiler. First round, there's like multiple rounds of tournament. I took a blowtorch to the competition. It was like, I'm just – I'm not – and then the second round, you'll see how it goes. It was a battle, and it was quite humbling.
1:51:20Pat McAfee:Okay, Shrigs. I like to hear that. Now, Grant, it feels like I do know what happened in the first two episodes with Shrigs in there. And we'd like to say congrats on that earlier. Yeah, baby, Shrigs. That's right. We can't wait to watch it, but we would like to let whoever is in charge of that particular show know that we understand why. Because there's no way this guy could go into your little suit show and just shut everybody down. There's no way that could happen. that'd be a real buzzer killer would it not it would but you know i mean
1:51:52Jeff Passan:shrakes raises a good question how am i going to react if i'm standing next to john ham you know and his hamaconda maybe you know maybe i grab that thing and i'm trying to squeeze that instead of the buzzer and then you know it throws me off that's possibility with what you just said
1:52:07Pat McAfee:there's no way that guy could go in there and beat all these ivy leaders yeah what he's doing Final Jeopardy's got both hands on the back of his head and somehow... There's a chance. He might win it all. There's no reason that guy, though, that says that and immediately goes that, could win Super Soup Jeopardy. He's too silly. No, couldn't do that. Couldn't do that. By the way... You gotta have Ham on the show. I want to hear his thoughts on Jeopardy. Yeah, we'd like to let Mr. Ham know he is welcome on this show anytime we are sure. Ty, you could ask him about those rumors. Yeah, we have. We've already talked.
1:52:39Pat McAfee:Yeah, we've done that. We've taken a trip down that lane before. We love Mr. Ham. We also appreciate the fact that sports trivia is coming back in a big way. Absolutely. We love it. We hope ESPN Jeopardy has great success. We hope that Season 2 exists as well. And, you know, just you don't have to be scared of the big bad wolf out here in Indianapolis, you know, especially whenever it comes to being smart. I would never put myself in there. Okay, that is not my game. Unless it is. I don't know what's being asked.
1:53:07Jeff Passan:Sports Jeopardy, I think you'd be able to farewell on that.
1:53:09Pat McAfee:You'd do great. I've always been a Wheel of Fortune guy. So Jeopardy kind of scares me because normally you have to be pretty well read. But if it's sports. All sports questions. We can kind of cook in there a little bit. Hmm. Joe Buck didn't want Ty Schmidt to eat on ESPN Jeopardy. That's what I heard. That's what I heard. Bummed out about that. What are you going to do? Joe Buck's so good. We love Joe. Love Joe Buck. Have a great weekend. We'll see you on Monday from Steelers training camp. Goodbye.
1:53:42You know when you're locked in, focused and fearless. Welcome to the WNBA. Your vision narrows. You can't look away.
1:53:51Jeff Passan:Every assist, every stop, every logo three. From beyond the logo. Every did you see that moment. You bet. What records are going to be broken this season? All of it right here. Lock in. It's the WNBA on ESPN. All season long. In a sunny Californian suburb, one family's home is unusually quiet. When detectives walked into that house, they said that it was like time just stood still. It's 2010, and the McStay family is nowhere to be found. Inside the home, no clear answer where the family could have gone. Husband, wife, and two children all gone, like, poof, disappeared. The search for the McStays quickly captures the nation.
1:54:39But for years, the search for answers only brings more questions. Who's ever heard of an entire family going missing? A family of four doesn't just drop off the face of the earth with no contact. Is this a family on the run? Or is the truth far more sinister? From ABC Audio in 2020, this is what happened to the mixed days. Coming August 11th, wherever you get your podcasts.
1:55:02Jeff Passan:Or subscribe to 2020 True Crime Plus on Apple Podcasts for ad-free episodes, early access to new episodes, and so much more.
1:55:16Pat McAfee:Good send-off. Yeah. Joe Buck didn't want Ty Schmidt to eat. Let's watch and make sure it's something we'd be good at, though. There is a chance, you know.
1:55:23Jeff Passan:Yeah, like I said, I've been playing Sports Jeopardy, you know, circa 1995 on Sega Genesis, and I was faring pretty well back then. Schrager gets it. Great game. On the PC, baby. Is that where you were playing it? No, I was playing it on the Sega Genesis. Yeah. That Joe Montana. Jeopardy game on Sega? Yeah. That's awesome. Sports Talk Football. What's that? Joe Montana, Sports Talk Football. Awesome game. In between Tecmo and Madden. Awesome Genesis game. Are you a gamer? Oh, that era, like, that's all I did. That raised me, yes. What about Mario Kart?
1:55:57Pat McAfee:Are you a pretty good Mario Kart player? Oh, yeah. Game Genie? Goldeneye, Game Genie. What was that game that you guys all got addicted to? The first one that really started killing people, you started shooting people? Call of Duty? No, before that. Halo? Halo was the one, right? Doom. Doom was the original. Doom was sick. Doom was the one where you saw the thing, right? Yeah. Yeah, my brother. Doom was first, I think, and then Halo game, then Call of Duty, right? That's kind of the line of games? Yeah, I want to call it. I never played those. The only shooters I really played was Goldeneye. Yeah.
1:56:27Pat McAfee:Interesting. My brother was great at video games. I watched him play a lot. I was ass at video games. I was so bad. Mario Kart, the only one I could really cook in. Yeah. Because I feel like that's the most athletic one. Sure. Mario Kart, probably the most athletic one. How would we do in a video game contest against other not good? I just don't have time to play video games anymore. Ten years ago, Dominic. I think Conor, I mean, he just got married. Like Mitt. Who plays the most in the office? Conor. Who games the most? He just got married, though, so we don't know. Yeah. We think that might be.
1:57:00Pat McAfee:That's done. Yeah. Bone, but Bone only plays WWE. Yeah, and he's good there, though, because I think the only good doing that one is. Yeah, a lot of button mashing. It's weird. He's always playing bra and panty matches.
1:57:12Jeff Passan:No, did you guys bring up SummerSlam? I wanted to ask Shregs what his favorite match on the card is. Night one or two. Doesn't matter. I like Dauhausen versus Miz. Well said. Me too.
1:57:26Pat McAfee:Who's that again? That guy won you a fucking NBA title. Dauhausen. I don't know how happy he is. That guy won you an NBA title. That's disgusting what you just did. I love that guy. Yeah. Dude, Dan Housen? That was awesome. Dan Housen. Dan Housen. He was cool as shit. I was in the green room with him, like, get up. He was cool. He was hanging. Yeah, he's hilarious. He's awesome. He also got a lot of power. I love that dude. He's got a lot of power. Yeah. He's got a lot of power, that guy. I think he, is he taking on the mic? I don't think so. Is that at SummerSlam or no? No, I just made that up.
1:58:05Pat McAfee:Those are two guys I like.
1:58:06Jeff Passan:you like the mic in danhausen he did sit next to the mic at the uh sps oh yeah i forgot about that
1:58:13Pat McAfee:remember us turning the corner and seeing the mic and shrags next to each other that's awesome well they had that jim abbott piece which about the kids with disabilities and i'm i'm literally crying and i look over to this professional wrestler and he looks at me he's like i'll let i'll let it pass like you're allowed to do that on this i thought he was gonna like hey there was some emotional stuff in there oh yeah especially if you're kind of tired a little bit a little bit There's some real emotional pieces in there. They were telling some real stories. I cried like the entire fucking show. The whole time.
1:58:43Pat McAfee:Yeah, the whole time. I was like, oh, fuck, man. And then I had to get up there and talk. Yeah. And I was like. That one wasn't emotional either. Yeah, not at all. I was trying to just think of the story as I was going up there. And I'm like, oh, my God. One of the cool things. I don't know if anyone saw this at home. The, I'm going blank. MT, what would you say he is? U.S. Coast Guard. Coast Guard. He was rushing off stage afterwards. Pat grabbed him before he got off backstage and Pat grabbed him physically and said, Hey, take a moment and just kind of flipped him around and let him look at a whole crowd of like the sports world's greatest, giving him a standing ovation.
1:59:14And I had chills from Pat doing that. It was a really cool moment from you. Good awareness. And I think it was at that moment where this guy realized like, Oh wow. I know I'm being humble. I know I'm being modest. I know, but like, this is, this is a, this is a really cool moment in my life.
1:59:27Pat McAfee:Yeah. Scott is his name. He, uh, I wish I had his official title. I wish I had his official title. We didn't, we, it wasn't ever said there he was awesome he was a true lad of the lads and then obviously her hero and courageous and everything and he obviously just kind of deferred all of the to everybody you know like well the army did this this did this we this did this which is what you would i guess the reason why he's getting that award is because you want and you're because that is how he he kind of thought about it but he was a lad of the lads as well ast2 uh scott Ruskin, okay, is his title.
2:00:03Pat McAfee:But yeah, he was awesome. And it was cool as we were walking off, you know, fighting through tears of my eyes. And I turned and the whole place, like that hadn't happened. You know, people go up on stage, people were standing. But when people were walking off stage, there wasn't a standing yet or whatever. And I didn't know what the show was because we did missed rehearsal. 100 % on me. I didn't know what was next. But yeah, I don't know how often that happens for people. You know, and it's like, I'm happy he got a chance to see that. Yeah, that was cool for Scott, man. And also, cool for our heroes in general.
2:00:34Pat McAfee:Thank you for being badasses. Actually. Fucking crazy how courageous some people are out there. Then you got us. Ty's scared to go to the bathroom if he had four Red Bulls because he doesn't know what's going to come out. That's why we need them. Shregs, who's your favorite wrestler? Probably Jake the Snake Roberts. Okay. Shout out to Jake Snake. My current roster. Yeah, current roster. He's the inventor of the DDT, by the way, Jake the Snake, which is a huge, huge impact. I like Orton. Hell yeah. Okay. Good call. Hell yeah. Love Randy Viper. Watch Pat and Orton do some shit in the spring, and I loved it.
2:01:12So you're a big snake guy, the Viper and Jake the Snake. Yep. Dan Housen, though, not your guy? I like Dan Housen. Dan Housen's cool. Trick Williams, I liked him. My son loves him.
2:01:23Pat McAfee:He's got a big one this weekend. He does. Yeah, Trick's got a big one this weekend. Are you going to SummerSlam? No, I will not be in Minneapolis this week. All right, well, it's a two-night event Saturday, August 1st. We got Fatal Influence versus Nikki, Bree, and Paige. I can't wait for that one. Those are three Hall of Famers. Yeah. The Usos and Jacob Fartu represent the bloodline, take on Royce Keys, L.A. Knight, and Solo Dolor Sokoa. Okay. Who you got in this one, Shregs? You know, it's too close to tell for me. I get it. I get it. True. Tough to pick. You're right. What is that? Triple? When these two match up, just throw the record books out.
2:02:09Is that a street brawl or a Minneapolis street fight? Yeah.
2:02:13Pat McAfee:No, that's a, I think that's just a standard. Just standard. Okay. Six-man tag. Okay. Gunther versus Nick Aldis. Now, this one's going to involve some heavy shots. I think people forgot who Aldis is. You know, yeah, he's foreign Adam Pearce. That's what I thought he was. Sure. General manager of SmackDown. He was involved pretty mightily in me and Orton's story as we were trying to save the business. Turns out Cody Rhodes had saved all along. We were kind of misreading the entire situation. Remember, he had to deal with me a couple times. Oh, yeah. Now he's fighting Gunther? I think he's ready.
2:02:47Pat McAfee:Is anybody ready? Shregs, who do you got in Gunther versus Aldis? I'm going to go with Gunther on this one. Yeah. Everybody feels that way. That might actually motivate Aldis a little bit, huh? It could. He's one of the most violent champions in WWE, so it would be... No. The. Oh, the. Is that not Wally?
2:03:05Jeff Passan:Pip? The artist formerly known as Wally, yes.
2:03:08Pat McAfee:He was never known as Wally. He was Walter. Were people chanting Wally? Wally. I swear they used to chant Wally for him. No, no, no. They never said Wally. They never said L.A. Goldberg. Maybe not. No. Gunther. Never said Wally. You never said that. Never said that. We're all on Gunther here? Yeah. We don't like foreign Adam Pearce getting a win? No. No, she's not the most violent champion. How about Liv, champion versus Eoskai? Liv. Liv. The technical difficulty in that match is going to be through the roof. Is this the first time she's defended the strap? I saw that stat across the bottom of the screen.
2:03:44Pat McAfee:It's been forever since she's defended this title. It's like Liv works whenever the right person shows up and gives her a challenge. That's why Liv's the champion. I like Liv to win. Shregs, you got Liv or Eoskai? I got Liv. on this one, guys. Oh, she retains. How about you, AJ? You know what, guys? I think EO Sky is going to take this. Whoa! I hate to do it. I hate to do it, but I got to trust my instincts on this. All right. Jeez. Very technical match. Yeah. CM Punk versus Cody Rhodes. A lot of history here, obviously. Now, just about a week ago, it felt like they were kind of all fun and games.
2:04:22But we know Saturday night,
2:04:25Pat McAfee:when they get in the ring, It's going to be a master class. Who do you like, Shregs? C and Punk or... Cody Rhodes.
2:04:39Pat McAfee:Cody Rhodes. Cody Rhodes.
2:04:46Pat McAfee:Cody Rhodes. Cody Rhodes. Cody Rhodes. Cody Rhodes. Cody Rhodes. Cody, Cody, Cody, Cody. Cody! Who are you picking? I love the storyline of CM Punk being the overestimated or the underestimated, the guy chipping. But I also like when Cody has to fight back for it. I'm going to say for SummerSlam, CM Punk, prior to Chicago, is going to have his moment. And CM Punk is going to beat Cody Rhodes. Wow. Wow. That'd be a shocker to us.
2:05:25Jeff Passan:Yeah, I know. No way.
2:05:26Pat McAfee:Yeah, it does feel like he kind of understands. AJ, who are you riding on Saturday? Who are you hopping right on top of on Saturday, maybe? I hate to pick against Shrags, but I got Cody Rhodes on this one. Oh, you're riding Cody? Okay. Yeah. You're riding with Cody? You're straddling him down there, riding him right to Happyville? No, I won't be there, but yes, I will be rooting for him from afar. You'll be riding, riding with Cody, riding on Cody, if you will.
2:05:52Jeff Passan:Ty, who do you got, Cody or CM Punk? I mean, it's always been Odi O's, especially after we saw the athletic achievements he put on at Goofball Fest. Yeah, I'd say that he's ready for this one.
2:06:02Pat McAfee:Okay, Tone, how about you?
2:06:03Jeff Passan:Who do you like? I hate CM Punk with passion. Whoa. Why? With the power of a thousand suns. Which is crazy because Tony dressed as him at WrestleMania two years ago. I didn't know a ton about him at that time. You did.
2:06:15Pat McAfee:What do you mean? I didn't know. I mean, he'd been around forever. I had to do that stupid clobbering time thing. You crushed that, Tone. You were really good. I did just breaking news on WWE.com. They're up for a MTV Music Award, video award for Best Kiss, too. So I hope them the best. Okay, so I think you're picking Cody Rhodes? Yeah. Okay, but you were once a CM Punk. CM Punk's in the best shape I've ever seen.
2:06:40Jeff Passan:He's ever been in.
2:06:41Pat McAfee:It's unbelievable. CM Punk did put on a master class at WrestleMania. He absolutely did. He lost. Nope. Didn't. Well, he didn't. No, he did not. Am I thinking of a difference? You see the title right there over his shoulder. Did he go against Roman? He won that one? I think so. I just thought, yeah, that's just not possible in my eyes. To be clear, how long ago was that? That's when he had to have got the title, right? I thought Sammy had it for like a day and then CM won it. Oh, yeah, Sammy had it for one day. So Roman beat CM Punk? yes according to Nick yes congrats to our tribal chief that's a big time win so that CM Punk got humbled in that and then he came back stronger and then won the title from Sammy and now he's defending it against Cody that's what happened that's what it sounds like yes the fact that Sammy had the title for any amount of time Jesus Christ what are we doing Sammy's a grinder your grinder doesn't mean you get the strap brother Sammy has done so much for the business.
2:07:52Pat McAfee:And who says that he doesn't have weight. We've gone down this road. These two, they just don't look like a WWE champion in my eyes. CM Punk does. Finally. Okay. And now he's champ. He's got Cody Rhodes, though, who we got to experience. Cody is the business. He is the business. Yeah. Everything you want in the business, Cody Rhodes is. Yeah. So I'm going with Cody Rhodes. Actually, because of all that, I'm going with CM Punk. Yeah, Pat, come on. Oh, wait, it's in Minnesota? Give me, actually, Punk's going. Okay, so hold on. Just by location. CM Punk in Minnesota, especially, you know, Midwestern.
2:08:29Pat McAfee:Going to have to do that. And then Brock and Obafemi. This one is a Clash of the Titans. Yeah, yeah. Tell me. Big guys. Give me Brock. Okay, AJ Hawk has Brock Lesnar. A Gathering of the Goliaths. Mm-hmm. Saturday in Minnesota. the next of the business and the prodigy of the business. Shregs, who do you like? Brock Lesnar from Minnesota taking on Obafemi in SummerSlam Saturday night. See, I watched Lesnar walk off after that last fight he had at WrestleMania, and I was like, I'm good to close the chapter on that, tip my cap. And now he's back? I'm going Obafemi. It was a classic way to end a career.
2:09:15Just go off into the sunset.
2:09:17Pat McAfee:Oh, it was a work, brother. you got worked Oba thought Oba thought it was over too so he said I don't have to worry about that guy anymore yeah right the big bad alpha male of our species was still hunting Paul Heyman cried Paul Heyman cried when Brock retired I mean that was good work yeah that was good man that was really good I was emotional at home in New York like what's happening do we think Brock comes out all for nothing he's back number 69 Vikings jersey yeah I hope so I hope he comes out on a motorcycle too Dude, just come on and let that thing eat. That'd be sweet. Oh, maybe he knocks that stupid Viking mascot off of it and he rides the motorcycle.
2:09:54Pat McAfee:No, I'm not talking about the Minnesota Vikings. But they are in the stadium, right?
2:09:58Jeff Passan:Yeah. That's a huge stadium. Massive.
2:10:00Pat McAfee:Okay, let's go to Sunday. Let's run through Sunday's lineup as we pick that entire card. Everybody pick Brock there? Or is everybody picking Oba?
2:10:06Jeff Passan:I mean, I forgot it was in his backyard. Wow, strikes.
2:10:12Pat McAfee:AJ? Brock? You know, I got Brock. Brock. Brock. Brock. But you're doing Oba's walk. I just love doing that walk. I'll take Brock Lesnar in his hometown over Obafemi. Oba's got a great future ahead, though. He does. And if this was potentially Brock's last one at home.
2:10:30Jeff Passan:Bigger one to hang the boots up at.
2:10:33Pat McAfee:You know, but there is a thought of, like, giving a rub to the next generation. You know, there is, like, one of those things in the business. So maybe Brock will have it, one, and then say, for the good of the business, we are going to kind of let Oba do it. We'll see. Brock's never going to quit, though. No.
2:10:52Jeff Passan:No. But maybe he does. Because he's... For the business.
2:10:59Pat McAfee:Let's go to Sunday. Penta taking on Chad Gable. Schrags, who do you like? Who is it? Okay. Come on. Chad Gable. I can't see it. It's Olympic wrestler Chad Gable. Okay, American Olympian wrestler. Iowa wrestler Gable, yep. Okay, and then I think he's Minnesota, actually, maybe. I'm not 100 % sure. He's not related to Dan Gable. I know that. Oh, he's not? I thought Dan Gable. Yeah, his name's Chad. He's a hell of a wrestler, actually. One of the greatest in the ring. He's second coming of Kurt Angle, who 20 years ago today, by the way, won his gold medal in the Olympics with a broken freaking neck.
2:11:34Pat McAfee:Yep. Yes. Remember that? Shout out to Kurt Angle. He say, dude, all over again. Just hard work and grit and nothing stopping you. We love Kurt Angle. If Kurt Angle was wrestling in SummerSlam, we'd say Kurt Angle was winning. Yes. That's what we'd say. Chad Gable versus Penta. Who do you like, Shregs? I like Gable. AJ? Chad Gable all day long. Ty? I'm going to go Gable as well. Okay, that didn't sound like Ty. Go ahead, Diggs. Yeah, these colors don't run. He's American. One gold medal. But you are kind of wearing black and white, which is kind of Penta's. Oh, these colors? No. The colors that run through my blood.
2:12:13Okay. red, white, and blue.
2:12:15Pat McAfee:Okay, I'll rival Gable too for that, but I think Penta's got a real chance here. He's a special talent. And then we got Baron Corbin, bum-ass Baron taking on Trick Williams. And Shregs, this is who you said is beloved in your household. Baron Corbin's a problem. He's an experienced vet who's not scared to do the low-dine dirty tricks to get a dub if he needs it. Also an owner of skulls, human skulls at his house. So Shregs, you're going to pick against Corbin and stay with Trick, or do you like Corbin maybe to get the big-time win? Corbin, I want to say pride of Kansas City, if I'm not mistaken.
2:12:50Rolls with the Chiefs a lot, but I'm going Trick Williams here. I love everything about him. I love his whole presentation. I love the way he fights, and I think he's going to be the next guy in wrestling.
2:12:59Pat McAfee:Oh, he's the next guy in wrestling. He's saying my time is now. Your time is up. AJ, who do you like? So I'm going to have to admit something. I was not prepared to pick all the SummerSlam matches both nights, but I can pivot and work in the moment. I like Baron Corbin. Okay, you need more stats? I don't need more stats. That was a strong pivot. I didn't prep for this as much as I thought I was going. You watch every Friday and Monday. Way to prepare. We have been prepping, though, for you. Yeah. We have been prepping for you, so we all got the answers here. We all have whatever question you have, we have the answers.
2:13:36Pat McAfee:So don't you worry about that, AJ. As long as they're healthy. As long as they're both 100 % healthy going into this match. You want to see an injury report. I need to know what's going on with these guys. Okay, I'm taking Baron Corbin. Okay, I'm taking Baron Corbin to come back in a big way. Tone, Ty? Let's see, an up-and-coming star in the business versus some who I love, old washed-up vet. Yeah, big trick. Okay, when you tell it like that, I guess it seems obvious, but is that accurate, what he just said, Ty?
2:14:10Jeff Passan:I'd feel a lot better if he was wrestling under the alias as Bishop Dyer. But considering he's going back to Baron Corbin, I'm going to have to go with Trick Williams.
2:14:19Pat McAfee:You know what? Everything you guys said was accurate. I'm going with Trick as well. That sounds like a clean sweep for Trick Williams. I got to flip. No, I'm going to Trick. I forgot about Trick's athleticism, everything he's doing. Baron, I love what he's doing. But Trick, he's the guy. He's the next guy. This is a long way away from Tom Pesta. It is. Long way away from Tom Pesta. Golden Gloves boxer, NFL offensive lineman. Yep. We got a chef now. Yeah. Does he still got it in? I think he might. Because I've had to wear a neck brace. That's right. Oh, yeah, you did. He's tall, athletic, fast, strong.
2:14:54Pat McAfee:Is he, though? I don't know because he's been doing a lot of whiskey in online. Exactly. We're going to find out. How about Dan Hasen versus Dom? And they're fighting in a… LMSL?
2:15:07Jeff Passan:Ladder match. Just a match. They're fighting in the square circle. Is this SummerSlam? We're all the fucking gimmicks. Give me a hell in a cell. Give me fucking a Minneapolis street fight. There's all that bullshit.
2:15:20Pat McAfee:I think there is a hell in a cell the first night, right? You know where Brock and Oba? Are they doing hell in a cell? Yeah, they're doing hell in a cell.
2:15:25Jeff Passan:Okay, I thought so. I just need to.
2:15:29Pat McAfee:It's all there. Okay. It's all there. Just making sure. Just making sure. Dan Housen or Dom? Who do you got? Shrags? I'm not familiar with Dom. He looks a little bit like Taylor LeJuan in this photo. Yeah, Dom's a problem, I will say. Dan Housen's a menace and a problem. I'm a Dan Housen guy. You know it. New York Knicks. Knicks in five. Dan Housen's the reason why. Okay. I like that. Bars, actually. AJ, who do you got? I mean, you know, we can't. I cannot pick against Dan Housen, so give me him.
2:15:55Jeff Passan:Ty? I can't pick. I love Dom. Can't pick against Dan Housen. Diggs? It feels like Dan Housen's got the rub right now, but as far as, you know, just technicians in the ring. Technical ability? Yeah. Give me Dom.
2:16:06Pat McAfee:Fox, is Dan Housen back there with you right now? No, he's not. What the hell? Do the voice. Do the voice, Bruce. Come on, Bruce. Hi, Jinx. Come on, Bruce. Human monies this weekend.
2:16:18Jeff Passan:Human monies? I lost all my human monies yesterday on the Cardinals.
2:16:21Pat McAfee:Yeah, I love Dan Housen. I love Dan Housen. He's the man. But Dom. Great. Dom.
2:16:27Jeff Passan:He wins. Dom and his dirty tricks.
2:16:28Pat McAfee:Yeah. And Dom's got people all over the place. He does. But Dan Housen's got those little ones. Mm-hmm. Give me Dan Housen. Big-time win out of Dan Housen. Okay, here it is. Both former world champs, Finn Balor taking on Sami Zayn. Peter Schrager, who do you got in this one? I've got Finn Balor winning this one over Sami Zayn. Oh, I like. We love Finn Balor. What's the crack? He's a good Irish lad. Taking on Canadian Sami Zayn. AJ, who do you like? You know, I've been sensing a lot of hate for Sami Zayn, coming especially from Tone's direction. So I'm going to take Sami Zayn in this one. Wow, you think maybe Tone inspires Sami to get the job done.
2:17:11Pat McAfee:Let's go to the toxic table. Ty Schmidt, who do you like, Finn or Sami Zayn?
2:17:16Jeff Passan:Love Finn. I would expect Sami Zayn to deliver several haluba kicks during this match, maybe a couple blue powder bombs. Thunder. Yeah, sure. Chances are I'm probably going to opt out and go take a shit during this match. This one just isn't doing it for me. Coup de grace. I know. I like it. This is the main event? This ain't the fucking main event, Triggs. Come on. This is SummerSlam. You kidding? So, yeah, I might go drop a deuce during this one. No way.
2:17:46Pat McAfee:This is what you're talking about, AJ. Finn Balor and Sami Zayn have put in so many years into the business, and this is how the toxic table feels about it. It's unbelievable.
2:17:55Jeff Passan:I appreciate it. I appreciate how many fucking years they've put into the business. So who are you picking? Nobody?
2:18:03Pat McAfee:Tony, you're picking the bathroom is what you're doing. Yeah, exactly. That's unbelievable. Tony, who do you like? Well, we got a 12-pack versus a bag of milk. That is not. Tony. That's not how Sammy Zane is built. Give me the demon. Okay, Finn Balor, we don't know if he's the demon. I don't know if you know what that means. Okay, so Charlotte, Jade, Tiffany, and Chelsea. is it a fatal four-way here? Chelsea Green. So what's the rules? Is there a surprise guest up top? Yeah, I don't know what's going on up there. What's the rules on this one? It's an interim WWE Women's Championship ladder match.
2:18:50Pat McAfee:I'll tell you that is going to be a really good all of them fly. All of them are willing to do stuff. That's going to be a great match. I'm actually excited to watch it. That's a ladder match right there.
2:19:00Jeff Passan:Love it.
2:19:01Pat McAfee:Okay. There's going to be a Charlotte Flair. Exactly. This one's easy. Who? Chelsea Green. Okay. Ty? No.
2:19:10Jeff Passan:It's Charlotte Flair. We were just with her. I mean, you know. I'm not going to do the whole thing. I'm not going to do it right now. So I'm just going to take Charlotte Flair. She looked very motivated at the ESPYs. Yes, she certainly did.
2:19:24Pat McAfee:Her and the mic. She had to deal with the mic, obviously, through the entirety. Not deal with, sorry. Get to hang with the mic, which is how we all feel. Shregs in that ladder match going to be, this one's show stealer, I do believe. Who do you have winning? I'm going with an upset. I think Jade is going to take it, and I think we're all going to be talking about Jade on Monday morning. She's a beast. She is. She's an absolute beast. AJ, who'd you pick? I'm picking Jade, but it's not an upset, so I think Jade's going to be upset that Shregs threw some shade her way saying it would be an upset.
2:19:56I think Jade is the favorite. I'm going to pick her to win.
2:19:58Pat McAfee:Congratulations to Chelsea Green who wins this one, I think. Oh, wow. As you kind of look at this, Tiffany's going to fly. Sure.
2:20:04Jeff Passan:Tiffany in Minnesota, right?
2:20:07Pat McAfee:She's from Minnesota, I believe. Okay. I believe there's going to be something that's going to be absurd. Charlotte's going to do something insane. Jade's power is going to do something. And then Chelsea Green, who gets absolutely demolished early. She's crappy. I mean, there's two tables maybe she goes through very quickly early. And then she, at the end, is going to survive. She's going to go crawling up there. And Chelsea Green's going to be champion. Wow. Is the belt hanging from the rafters? Yeah, glad her, Matt. Who's the silhouette top right, though? Is that some surprise coming in? Shrake should have inside info on it.
2:20:39Pat McAfee:Otis tapping in or something? I don't know if Otis.
2:20:42Jeff Passan:I think former Vikings head coach Mike Tice is the special referee. That would be so good. Mike Zimmer. Could be.
2:20:52Pat McAfee:Could be. And, ladies and gentlemen, all roads lead to this. Yeah. All of Saturday happened. all of Sunday happened for this match. Roman Reigns taking on Seth freaking Rollins. Shrags, Seth freaking Rollins has become a sports analyst. He is obviously a man who has accomplished many of things in the WWE. Will be a first ballot Hall of Famer. How do you think he fares against Roman? Reigns Schreger Gotten to know Seth very well I find him to be incredibly talented I think he's passionate with his sports takes I also think He is great for the WWE As is Roman Reigns Midwest guy, Chicago, the whole deal He's from Iowa, dickhead I'm going with Seth Rollins In a victory Okay, you don't really know him that well You guys got your relationship Iowa, but then Chicago, he likes the Bears There you go.
2:21:56Pat McAfee:He does like the Bears. Do you like Seth freaking Rollins? I like Seth freaking Rollins. You like the visionary. You like the revolutionary.
2:22:09You like...
2:22:13You don't know it. I don't know the theme song. No, yeah, you don't.
2:22:17Jeff Passan:Oh! You'll be standing on your couch doing it on Sunday night. Seth freaking Rollins. I just need to hear the actual music, then I could sing all the words.
2:22:25Pat McAfee:No, but what I said wasn't the song. What I said was what he says every time he's in the ring. Literally every single time he's in the ring, he says it. I give him credit. He's up at 4.45 in the morning doing good morning football. He's going to win a wrestling match. Yeah, you're right. That's good work ethic. And he is from Iowa, obviously a dog. What does that matter, though, with who he's taking on? AJ, who do you like? How do you like it? I mean, come on. We know that Seth Rollins, I love what the guy's doing. He's everywhere. And he's very talented. But we all know. Give me Roman Reigns.
2:22:56Pat McAfee:Toxic Tabletone and Ty? Seth has my favorite entrance in all of wrestling right now, but... Ty? Yeah.
2:23:04Jeff Passan:Just kidding. Give me the fucking... What? Give me the architect of destruction. What? Yeah. I'm going with Seth freaking. He's in Roman's head already. We saw it. We saw it. Roman can't get away from it.
2:23:15Pat McAfee:What did you just do right here?
2:23:17Jeff Passan:Yeah. What was that? Broke up the shield. And he's just fucking crawling right into Seth's trap.
2:23:22Pat McAfee:He is a master baiter. He is. He was able to bait him masterfully into the ring to get a stomp onto a chair. He's a revolutionary. He's a visionary. He's also maybe the greatest master baiter in the history of wrestling. Yeah.
2:23:38Jeff Passan:I mean, you want to talk about technicians in the ring? Look no further. All right. So you like Seth Freakin. I do like Seth Freakin. And Manti's been teaching him new moves every day. I believe it.
2:23:50Pat McAfee:Is Tom Brady running out? I think Jamie too. Tom Brady. Where is Logan and Tom? Yeah. I saw Logan was doing stuff from that card show in the collective in Chicago. He was doing booms with AJ and Big Justice. Yeah, he was. Dude, I love that.
2:24:05Jeff Passan:Those fucking guys are everywhere. They're working a gimmick, bro. I know. It's crazy. I respect the hell out of it.
2:24:12Pat McAfee:Yeah. That's one of the greatest gimmicks an indie wrestler has ever gotten over.
2:24:16Jeff Passan:Yeah.
2:24:16Pat McAfee:Yeah. Because you've got to remember, dad is an indie wrestler. He's a worker. He's a worker. He gets it. And he's got a gimmick over with his entire family. Yeah. Pretty good little work. He needs to come out of SummerSlam maybe. Oh, that would be awesome. Maybe they throw the Rizzler. Maybe Brock hits him.
2:24:34Jeff Passan:Shoot him out of the horn up top or something. Gallo horn.
2:24:40Pat McAfee:Are you going to hit that thing, Shrek? You're not going. All right. We're going to try to get out there for this. Yep. Obviously, it's a huge deal. I want Big Justice in the Danhausen mask. now we're talking at least you know his name now okay the guy won you a fucking title you're the best we appreciate you ladies and gentlemen appreciate you guys Peter Schreger big weekend SummerSlam huge let's enjoy it I can't fucking wait hope someone wrote down our picks a lot of picks AJ you weren't you weren't prepared for it huh I didn't get to do the as much prep as I would have liked to but I can always you know I know who's gonna win especially with the business We like to say thank you for everything.
2:25:26Pat McAfee:All love. You are the reason we get to have the greatest jobs of all time. We're so incredibly thankful. Monday, we'll be live from Pittsburgh Steelers training camp. Hell yeah. Can't wait to get out there and watch the boys work. I have no idea how that's going to go, but excited to kind of experience it. Very honored and thankful to be there. We will not be heading to the Hall of Fame on Thursday. And then we'll be on the road following. Are you okay?
2:25:49Jeff Passan:I just had a fucking shooting pain go up my entire arms. Left one? That's good. That's the side you want it to be.
2:25:58Pat McAfee:I don't think so. Very good, bro. Hey, great work, you two. I don't know what just happened right there. Me neither. Good work out of you guys. Behind the glass, good work this week, boys. Good work, boys. Good work, boys. AJ, way to go. At a baby hall. Oh, boys. I hope you guys are all right. Graphic design, boys. Way to go. GDB. Yeah, boys! Zito, Tim, battling. Hey, go, boys. Hey, go, boys. To the construction workers outside who have no idea with every single step that they take, they are taking our power or our internet. And I know it's not their fault, so it's a little bit of an interesting dynamic.
2:26:40Pat McAfee:When you have to rely upon a generator every day, you learn a lot about generators. And it turns out these generators, definitely good for power at some point. You know? Fickle bunch. They are a fickle bunch. Yeah. This is too big of a generator. You need a small generator. Yeah, the big one actually turned off by itself because you weren't using it enough. So the generator didn't want to give power because it wasn't giving enough power? Yeah, well, there's a setting. You could have turned off, but obviously you didn't know about it until now. We should have definitely ran through how much power it's using before we plugged this thing in.
2:27:14Pat McAfee:You bought this one that's 10x the amount of price that you actually need. Okay, so we bring another one in. How's that one doing? Oh, actually, well, they got a little bit of an oil thing going on. We're gonna have to redo the entire engine sick. It's getting So we get another one. Well, actually with the way it's about that We could actually take the other one and make it a but it's already too big right? Yeah We could change the setting to make it smaller Be a friend tell friend something nice That's what's happening AJ I mean, I've been thinking for years about getting one for my house I don't know if I'm going to anymore you need to get the proper size I think what you need is proper size and you need to know that much like insurance
2:27:47Jeff Passan:like when you need it it could be there yeah it could we're not knowing for sure though you know
2:27:53Pat McAfee:just like insurance could maybe gotta go through the proper channels we'll certainly see if it is or not you definitely need it though because maybe there's a chance you could get it generator feels like the same gimmick like could work for you but there's a lot of things you need to figure out and also this one's diesel this one's natural gas we're gonna make sure this is clean and that one's clean as well generator people we appreciate you appreciate you thank you brad's his name he's really been good for us shout out brad good guy shout out brad and these construction workers we appreciate them too because it does feel like they're working their ass off to get this done we appreciate that now the markers the people that lay the flags on where stuff is a little lazy we'd like them to get a little better at their job somehow i'd like science to get better so they can figure that out because these lads out here cooking outside just trying to work their asses off and i respect and appreciate that and all of us you know uh don't have perfect lives i think we need to remember that life is going to have its highs life is going to have its lows you just got to continue on because there's literally no other option so whenever you move forward in your day you can either choose to be happy or you can choose to be miserable it is up to you they say the silver lining is always in the storm.
2:29:10Pat McAfee:Let's try to find that thing. Let's remember and appreciate the fact that football's back. Hell yeah.
2:29:15Jeff Passan:Well said.
2:29:16Pat McAfee:Hall of Fame game's next week. Yes, it is. We're back. We did it. We did it. Have an incredible weekend. Shout out to SummerSlam.
2:29:24Jeff Passan:Shout out.
2:29:25Pat McAfee:Be your friend. Tell your friend something nice. It might change your life. We're in this thing together. Team on me. Team on three. For the good of sport, baby. One, two, three. Team. Goodbye. Thank you.
