0:00Pat McAfee:Hello beautiful people and welcome to our humble about the DraftKings Thunderdome on the NFL's Back Thursday August 6th, 2026 at Prokensar Town. Football! It is the greatest and tonight we have NFL uniforms playing football on a high school football field in Canton, Ohio as we celebrate the Hall of Famers going into the hall and being immortalized for the rest of their lives as Luke Kuechly and Larry Fitzgerald will be represented by the Cardinals and the Panthers. Who's favored tonight? Ah, the team that went to the playoffs last year, the Carolina Panthers, led by that man, Kenny Pickett, who will be taking on Carson Beck.

0:42Pat McAfee:Now, there was a tweet floating around, and we have not been able to check the legitimacy of it, but it does sound like a fun little fact, so hashtag stat that from the person that tweeted it. There's a chance Carson Beck threw the last pass of a college football season and the first pass of an NFL football season. He might be the only person in history to do as such. Well, we are hoping that he and Kenny Pickett and Haynes King from Georgia Tech, who will be the backup quarterback for the Carolina Panthers tonight. And then the sweet baby Slovis, who will be the backup quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals.

1:10What we're hoping for tonight is a lot of running from these quarterbacks.

1:14Pat McAfee:That's right. We are promoting a bet on DraftKings. And if you are of age, okay, and agree to bet responsibly and not be an asshole, we'd love for you to join us. Now, a lot of people say we're assholes for gambling on the Hall of Fame game. Okay? We took it out of that realm, we think, whenever we said 80-plus combined QB rush yards and total points in the game. Love it. Let's go for it. Come on. These quarterbacks are going to be running for their lives. What do we know about these preseason games? Well, we know that a lot of bad players are playing football right now. And by bad players, I mean they made it to the NFL, so they were good college players, but inevitably never going to be NFL players.

1:49Pat McAfee:These guys are going to be selling insurance. Hopefully. You know, that's what a lot of these guys are going to be able to do. Had great careers. A lot of these guys are going to be told for the first time in their life, you ain't worth a damn here. Go on and get out. Heartbreaking stuff, reality of the business, kid. There's only so many spots on the roster. So we understand that tonight might be some bad football, might be some chaotic football. But also we know this is very early. A lot of these second, third string wide receivers that are going to be playing tonight, they don't know where routes they're running.

2:15Pat McAfee:No, no, no. They have no idea where they're going. So the quarterback is usually going to find one person that they trust a lot. Okay, this person, I know where they're going to be. Now, can the offensive line protect me enough to know where this person is going to be to get the ball there? Probably normally not. A lot easier to get ball than protect somebody from not getting the ball. So what we think is going to happen, these quarterbacks are going to be running for their lives. Oh, yeah. We just showed Carson Beck taking the game into his own hands, running in. We know that Kenny Pickett has the ability to run because they actually had to change a rule because Kenny Pickett pump faked a fake slide and continued to run.

2:46Pat McAfee:Haynes King from Georgia Tech, that guy almost won the Heisman last year, and guess what he does? Runs the ball. Now, can that sweet baby Slovis, who played for 15 different colleges, can he move and do a we shall see? But we think 80 total points and quarterback rush yards combined at minus 1-6. Now, this is not like – these are not great odds. No. This would be a bet that people would say, oh, we're a really reacher. Yeah, we're trying to start out hot. Exactly. It's a Hall of Fame game. We're betting on the Hall of Fame game already, so we need to have a talk with ourselves. And you, listening, if you join us on this one, which, by the way, is a big-time team run.

3:21Pat McAfee:We are going hammer all together on this particular bet. But let's not get crazy tonight. We have no idea what's going to happen here this evening. It's a UFL game. Worse than a UFL game. That's what's happening tonight. Chaos is going to happen. Now, will there be stars that will be born? Will there be players that potentially make a name for themselves? Will there be people on the field tonight that had no shot of making an NFL roster and after a quarter, a quarter and a half of making some plays in front of everybody as we're celebrating Hall of Famers, make a team? Potentially. We've obviously seen some special plays in the Hall of Fame game.

3:52Pat McAfee:We saw a great fake punt out of the Tennessee Titans when Jeff Fisher was their coach. Remember, the punter took the ball behind his back. Go ahead and run that thing. There's a chance for some spectacles tonight. All we need is these quarterbacks to be running for their lives, which they normally do. The talks at the table is here at Boston Conner and at Ty Schmidt. One half of the hammer. Cowboys AP Tony's here. 35 and a half is the over-under. Now, you are an under god. That is kind of your thing. You like to assume that things are going to be a little bit cagey. Us betting on the Hall of Fame game, openly admit, let's not get crazy here.

4:21Pat McAfee:Correct. We're not putting a lot of bets out on this. No, we're not putting a lot of big units. Let's be responsible here. We're not trying to get rich off the Hall of Fame game, okay? No, trying to be fun. This is just holy hell, NFL teams are back out there doing it. What should we be looking for tonight? And I think what is kind of not talked about a lot, this is the first time these Hall of Famers are going to get a chance to get introduced in front of a live audience or a crowd and get a chance to talk about it, you know, before their speeches. Because their interviews, them trying not to give away what they're saying in the speech is an interesting little fun game.

4:51Pat McAfee:We'll all be watching this. This will all be in the background. But what should we expect out of this game tonight? One half of the hammer. Done. Cowboys AP toe. Yeah, tonight, Hall of Fame game. It's preseason. It's preseason for all of us. Like you said, we're not trying to get rich off of this. We're just wetting the whistle a bit. Wetting the beak. Just kind of getting our feet wet and seeing how the season's going to go for us. Normally, when I look at these games. Over under now, 34 and a half. Okay. Oh, no. Somebody hurt that we don't know about? We're fine. We've ticked a point down. 35 and a half is a pretty standard line total for preseason games.

5:22You'll see at points during this preseason, 31, 30 and a half, maybe even some 28s in there. It could go pretty low in the preseason. But what I look at normally is the quarterbacks, the backup quarterbacks, who's going to be playing most of the game. Kenny Pickett, veteran versus a rookie, Carson Beck. Dave Canales is 0-6 ATS, though. Yeah, they said that, but maybe he knows that.

5:41Pat McAfee:Maybe they get the hit back this year. The Panthers. Let's go football team. That is a good football team. Will they continue into a Hall of Fame game where a lot of the people that are going to be on that good football team, maybe great football team during the regular season, aren't going to be playing tonight? I would like to send my positive T's and P's to the punters that are going to be out here tonight. Now, obviously, you would assume that I would like to just lump the kickers in there as well. Punter, I would say, is the most dangerous position in preseason, especially in this Hall of Fame game, because you've got a lot of people that are going to be selling stuff in a week or so that are going to be cut from an NFL team, doing something that they've never done in their life, trying to protect you, and all you're doing is sitting back there like literally a sitting duck.

6:19Pat McAfee:And all you need is one or two people on the other team that know what they're doing and trying to make a team and know if they block a kick, they're going to definitely make the roster. So for punters, I would like to wish you all Godspeed. I hope you have a good one tonight. And John Tierlink, rest in peace, defensive line coach for the Colts, he once told me after I already made the team and I was already established, he said uh you catch your snap you throw that thing kick it and then you get the fuck off the football field that's what you do so all your younger punters i don't know if you're afforded that opportunity yet just know it's really nice whenever you get to that spot and tonight you sit in that pocket get your legs blasted and then you gotta get up and just do it again so good luck to the punters good luck to the special teams and that's where a lot of these rookies are going to make these rosters oh yeah a lot of people don't know that until they get to an nfl training camp It's like, hey, you were the best player in your high school.

7:08Pat McAfee:Hey, you were the best player at your college. You're so good, man. When you're playing a little Pop Warner Bowl, you were the best. I remember watching your highlights as a little A. You were unbelievable. Here, yeah, I'm going to need you to kick set on a punt team. If you can't do that, guess what? You're playing in Canada. So you need to learn that right now. And if you can't, you're going to be gone. You've got about three days to learn something completely abnormal to you. And, oh, yeah, we need you to strike, shed, and you need to run 60 yards. So do you want to make a team? This is your dream.

7:34Pat McAfee:Well, this isn't what I played. My whole life I played running back my whole life. This isn't. Yeah, sweet. And let me tell you about kickoffs. You need to go out here. You need to run full speed. Just close left shoulder, outside shoulder. Just run as hard as you can. Throw your face right into that. I think I got good. Don't need it. Just need you. Do you want to make the team or not? That is what's happening for a lot of rookies. We'll see tonight how they take to it all. Not a rookie. A very rich man. Just got paid again. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And he has earned it. Mm-hmm. Jonathan Taylor is now the highest paid running back in NFL.

8:08Pat McAfee:Congratulations to Jonathan Taylor, who had his contract negotiations go much more swimmingly than they certainly did a few years back, as he was a hold-in during the first year of a new head coach with a brand-new rookie quarterback as the best player. You know, kind of causing quite a shitstorm to start the entire Steichen era, but he ended up getting paid by boss man Jim Merce and Chris Ballard. Now he breaks the bank again because Bajon Robinson's deal just got done. Jameer Gibbs is sitting up in Detroit watching all these things happen. We assume he will break the running back number next in the next couple hours whenever they get that deal done.

8:45Pat McAfee:But for Jonathan Taylor as an Indianapolis Colts fan, this guy has done everything that you would have hoped he would have done coming out of college. He's unbelievable. He's explosive. He scores touchdowns. We've never won with him on our team. No. We've actually had the fourth overall pick a couple different times, but he's gone through a lot of different turnover, and he's always been a stud whenever he's on the field. So we're grateful he's here. We've got a lot of money tied up now in Alec Pierce, Daniel Jones, and Jonathan Taylor on the offensive side of the ball. Obviously, we've got a couple picks in sauce.

9:13Pat McAfee:We bring in Mooney as well. DeForest Buckner's still down there waiting on his money. Quentin Nelson, former top ten pick as a guard out of Notre Dame, his contract's due at some point. Chris Ballard said, I'm not renegotiating my deal because we've got to win. We'll see if I win, I'll redo a deal. We don't win. I don't deserve to be here. A lot of Colts fans are saying, yeah. We know. Yeah, we understand that. Chris Ballard is taking the ownership on that. I do respect and appreciate that. But we got a lot of big names that don't have money. And then a lot of our pillars here have gotten paid a lot of money.

9:42Pat McAfee:So I appreciate the team and the Urses paying this money to these people. But we're going to have to do some salary cap gymnastics if we want to keep this team together past this year. Is this an all-or-nothing year for the Indianapolis Colts? It really feels like that. And that's an absurd thing for a team that hasn't won the AFC South in 11 years. but I do appreciate the fact that we saw the first 10 weeks last year and everybody's like, yep, let's do that again. And if we're able to do that, hopefully we're able to figure it out. Well, we do know Jonathan Taylor is going to be a Colt probably for the rest of his career, definitely for the foreseeable future.

10:10Pat McAfee:And he certainly earned the paycheck that he just got. Yeah, very much so well earned, but it does kind of seem like Groundhog's Day. Like we've been having this same conversation about the Colts for the last several years, but it does feel a little bit different this year. Like they've paid all these guys. We saw the way they started last year. so we know that that is a possibility. They can play well. They can put themselves in a position to be one of the best teams in the AFC, at the very least be a playoff team. And, I mean, like the excuses are done. How many years in a row have we said, like, you know, or Ballard has gotten up there and said, like, hey, listen, I like our guys, but we need to win.

10:46Like, at a certain point, you kind of understand, hey, everyone's been paid. You have the guys who you think you need to go win, and now they do need to go win. And if they don't, I think there will be a lot of big changes in Indianapolis.

10:57Pat McAfee:I think there will be, too. And obviously, we got new ownership, same family. The three daughters of Jim Irsay now running things, Carly, Kalen, and Casey. And I think they have done a great job of adjusting to ownership role while being aggressive and doing things that maybe wouldn't have been happening in Colts past. But also understanding that if you do make a massive change, wholesale changes, a lot of decisions, I mean, that is a lot of things that have to happen. I'm not saying they punted on that for a year. but I do think they were like, hey, we're really good for 10 games. Our dad was one of the most patient owners, did not like the thought of turnover, turnover, turnover.

11:30Pat McAfee:They think that's what bad teams do. I think they felt as a group and as a trio of sisters, that's like we need, we deserve to let them do a run back. But also I think it's very clear like, hey, this run back better be good. And I respect that out of Carly, who by all accounts is a dog. I think that doesn't get talked about enough because she has dress. She dresses incredible. She dresses impeccable. Obviously, daughter of Jim Irsay, the way she speaks and talks is different than probably how other people speak. And obviously, Kaylin and Casey are part of that. But Carly is a dog. I believe that thoroughly.

12:05Pat McAfee:That's why I thought there was potentially going to be wholesale changes before last year. But it feels like from the inside of that building, everybody understands we got to win. And if we don't, we're gone, which I respect that. I appreciate that. But it's been a long time since we've been winning around here. Jonathan Taylor helps. Daniel Jones helps. Wallach Pierce be healthy, we'll see. But if we miss the injury bug, there's a chance this Colts team is the best team in ball, and nobody wants that, especially you up in New England, especially with the Super Bowl run you guys had last year.

12:34Pat McAfee:And then all of a sudden, guess who's back? The new Peyton Manning. Hi. Hi, up there. Hi. I'm Daniel Jones. I had the same college quarterback coach as Peyton Manning, and now I'm an Indianapolis Colt. Patriots, Colts, maybe back at the top of the AFC. We shall see. Maybe the Patriots fall off. There's some people in this room thinking about that, by the way. I don't think so. Not me either. I'm just telling you there's people in this room on microphones that think that that's going to happen. I don't like it. Yeah, yeah. I'm sure there's some back there. I'm also sure when they lay their head down, they don't really believe that.

13:04But all the reasons you guys are talking about the Colts is why it's almost impossible to believe in them. Like, they've done everything the same over the last, what, three, four years? I mean, their social sucks. Social media sucks.

13:15Pat McAfee:But they're not the only one. But, you know, like, I like that the NFL social media teams are getting exposed for being ass. That's a very big job for, like, social media content creators people. And these people have no clue about ball or anything seemingly. Don't care how the players or the team looks. Only care about them so admin win and what the numbers are. It's an epidemic going on in the NFL right now. Colts are certainly a part of the problem, not a part of the solution. But aside from that, let's just talk about what's on the field. Daniel Jones is outrageous. Quentin Nelson's playing for a bag.

13:50Pat McAfee:Is that what I'm reading right now? Look out. Maybe it is different this year, but I do understand how somebody from outside looking in could say, Colts haven't won the AFC South, which has been ass in all accounts in 11 years. It's been a long time here in Indy since there's been anywhere near a celebration. Well, and that's why when you look around the division, it's like every other team has made wholesale changes over the last five-ish years, and it seemingly has worked out for everybody. The Texans have come all the way back from the dead. The Jags have come all the way back from the dead.

14:17The Titans spent the most money in free agency, and now they're going into a second year with a quarterback with Brian Dayball, who Dayball basically has been called the, hey, this guy's going to help your young QB and kind of resurrect Dayball's career and also Cam Ward. So they also spent the fourth overall pick on a wide receiver one for their young quarterback. So that's why it's kind of hard looking at the Colts as they do everything the exact same as they've been doing with the same exact players. It's not the same.

14:42Pat McAfee:We got rid of Pittman. That's true. You got rid of one of your best players, Cassie. That's a great point. I forgot about that, too. Yeah, and Kenny Moore. He's not even on a team right now. I don't even think Kenny Moore's on a team. He's one of our best players. I need a new start. Not going to another. Are you retiring? I don't know. I just don't want to be here anymore. We get it. No, we don't. I retired as a 29-year-old. I hope the Colts win. We see Tyler Warren in a frame here I'm looking at. It's like we do got a lot of great players. Do we have the culture and the building to be able to win it all?

15:14Pat McAfee:I guess that has been certainly in question for a long time here now. Is this group different? I believe in Daniel Jones. And I'm going to tell you, after talking to Steichen off the record for about an hour, I believe in Shane Steichen. That's why they need to win. Because if they don't, he's going to get fired. He's going to go somewhere else, be an OC. He's going to lead that team to a Super Bowl. They're going to win a Super Bowl. And then he's going to go somewhere else, be a head coach. Trust him. Yeah, exactly. be unbelievable. So they need to win for his sake. Yeah, Shane Steichen will not be out of work for long.

15:43Pat McAfee:No. If he does not end up as the head coach for the Colts forever. Now, we would love for him to be the head coach of the Colts forever. But we do fear with everything we are hearing and seeing that if the Colts don't, what? What do we need? We need two playoffs? We need an AFC championship, basically? At the very least. It's not like get to a playoffs and win a game like the Lions fans were feeling for a while. It's like, no, we need to be an actual problem here. No, I think that's how the expectations are building. Win the division, not just make the playoffs. Yeah, we need a home playoff game, especially for the season ticket holders.

16:13Pat McAfee:You need to win a playoff game. Especially for the season ticket holders who are giving six figures to that fucking team and not show up for seven straight weeks at the end of that season. Okay, that is something that, you know, people, big-time supporters. People are talking about it. They need a home playoff game. This close. Home playoff game. Just a night game. Just need a playoff game. Just a night game would be sick. We haven't had a primetime game. We had the Indiana Knights jerseys. Had to wear them at 1 o 'clock because we didn't have a night game. The Colts, as soon as Amazon was not required to have every single team on Thursday night football, was one of only two teams to get kicked off a Thursday night's guaranteed primetime game and not have any.

16:55Pat McAfee:ESPN and others, stop sending people to cover the Colts in the locker room because it just became so irrelevant. It's like, how do you go from being the all-time winning decade in history of nfl to just nobody gives a damn it's like well you don't win the boys are gonna win now though congrats jt i think the playoff win will be just fine total you're over under for wins is seven and a half and you're third in the division as far as odds are concerned i think you get a playoff win people will be pretty happy look at the money we just paid to people can you put that back up please can you put the graphic up of all the money we paid to people and where we paid them and how we paid them please uh please boom but that's third in the division in odds yeah seven and a half in a 17 game season that can't happen you know like that can't happen that's why i know they're wrong okay they're wrong everybody's wrong okay speaking of being wrong are the tampa bay buccaneers wrong down there for what's going on with their veterans joining us now is friend of the program as we go camping in tampa bay ladies and gentlemen from the tampa bay times man has been covering the bucks for over 30 years please welcome rick stride Yeah, Rick Stroud.

18:00Pat McAfee:Stroud, sorry, we had to talk about the Colts and everything we've been through. Believe me, you get it more than most, I would assume, down there in Tampa. We're hoping Tom Brady comes down for a year, wins us the Super Bowl, and then goes ahead and gets out of there. Rick, obviously a lot of drama down there with Baker Mayfield coming out, talking about how disappointed he was in a three-minute run about how the business was handled. Then he went on with Pete Briscoe. Then he went on with Jeremy Fowler. Same story. I don't like that this is what this is. I feel like I've earned it. Allegedly, from Adam Schefter's perspective, if Baker wasn't happy with the Bucs, Bucs weren't happy with Baker.

18:30Pat McAfee:And then, boom, Vita Vea, this guy once traded. He's at practice, so he's smiling. He's laughing. Big Goose is dapping people up. He's taking his hat off. He's putting his hat on. But then you reported just yesterday from your source, Sizz, within Vita's camp, it's like, yeah, he's smiling. Yeah, for sure. He wants gone, though. This thing's over. Can you tell me about the state of the Bucs right now with their vets? Baker and Buccaneers, are we kumbaya? Vita Vea, he's gone and coming to the Indianapolis Colts. Where do we sit with the two biggest names basically on the Buccaneers right now? Well, we had a chance to talk to Jason Light today, and he said, I am not trading Vita Vea.

19:11So while they're getting a lot of phone calls about him and other players, there's no design to trade him. He actually said that there was a little bit of progress in that there is some dialogue, at least, between him and Vita Vea's agent. So we're going to see where that goes. You know, he tweaked his back or contractitis, as Adam Schefter calls it. And, you know, he's not practiced. So they're monitoring that. They say they don't want a small thing to become a big thing. The big thing is he wants out of here if he can't get his bag. So we'll see how they do this. I don't know why they just don't chip him up for this year a little bit and, you know, get him in the top 10 salary wise.

19:50What's it going to cost him? Five, six, seven million dollars and call it a year. And then they can do what they want to next year. and he's a big part of this offense not just size wise but what he means to this franchise but a little bit of optimism in Jason Light's voice I don't know if it's real or imagined but we'll see where it heads.

20:08Pat McAfee:Okay so that's for Vita Vea and obviously he's a pillar staple and a guy that so many teams would want and also still has years left of great football and if he's put on the right defensive line I mean imagine if the Rams just go and make a play for Vita. It would be disgusting. We'd all puke Rick and we'd all tell Jason Light that yeah great optimism bud thanks for handling it that way now let's go to the quarterback with Baker Mayfield he also mentioned about how much he loves Baker it sounds like in the press conference Baker seemingly uh maybe is able to keep personal and professional feelings separate but what he certainly said is he was not happy with the way the business was handling I don't know how he feels about Jason Light specifically but Schefter came on and said I don't know if the negotiation window is over so that told me that the Buccaneers still want Baker.

20:53Pat McAfee:They're not as pissed off at him as they could be for how he handled this. How do you see this all shaking out and what are your thoughts on the way the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense is going to go with the trigger man potentially pissed off at the organization? Well, I know that they were unhappy at some of the things that he came out and said. They may have felt disrespected in their own way, but listen, to Baker Mayfield and to any player in the NFL that's putting pieces of their body all over of the league. It's personal, right? Everything's personal to this guy anyway. He has the world's biggest shoulder chip.

21:26And to the Bucs, it's business. And from what I understand, that they were a little bit fearful or are a little fearful of getting into a Russell Wilson type situation where, you know, you give him a huge contract, maybe he doesn't pan out, and then you're, you know, strapped with bad salary cap situation. He wanted more than two years, obviously. I asked Jason light if he thinks he's a franchise quarterback he said yes we do but they're only uh reportedly offering him a two-year extension he didn't want to get into specifics they love baker the one thing they know about baker a couple things one he's absolutely gonna play his ass off i mean that's just who this guy is you know the walk-on of texas tech oklahoma heisman trophy all that stuff so they're not concerned about his approach and how he's going to react if anything it's going to make him more motivated.

22:15He says, but Jason Light said he's in there at four o 'clock in the morning. I'd like to see that, but that's what he said. But, you know, that aside, you know, I think Baker, you know, he could be franchised. Jason Light made it clear that that's still an option if they get to the end of the year and they don't have a deal. The franchise tag could also just be a placeholder until you work out a long-term agreement. I don't necessarily think that anything's closed on him um but to baker in his mind it is if they called his agent and offered him a deal that uh that he knew baker would take maybe something happens but i think right now the bucks hold the cards as far as leverage goes and i think baker wants a clear mind and and motivation and he's using that right now i got so much respect for the 4 a.m crowd but

22:59Pat McAfee:i got work to do at night too you know like there's people in the west coast that are three hours behind that i have to talk to later i don't know how they do it it's interesting i don't know I respect that they do. Early bird gets the worm, but what about the owl at night though? Because they're doing some shit as well. But he can't hoot with the owls and then also not be expected to soar with the eagles in the morning. There's so many different bird references we can go. 4 a.m. seems obnoxious to me, but I do respect those who are strict with it. And if Baker Mayfield's a 4 a.m. guy, I think that goes back to what he's saying where new guys come to the team and I have to basically tell them, hey, you got a preconceived notion about me here?

23:38Pat McAfee:I'm here 4 a.m. This is how I am. This is what I do and everything. That'd be impressive. Him and Mark Wahlberg getting after it at 4 a.m. though. Gotta love it. That cold tub would be sweet. The rest of us would be up early because we were out late, Pat. That's how that would work. Well, 4 a.m. I have seen actually today. Just did. I saw 4 a.m. this morning, you know, with some work and travel and everything like that. So, yeah, I'm seeing 4 a.m. from the night before. Now, there was a time, if you guys do recall, I was 5 a.m wake up it was like a two-week period where i was doing it and i was like i'm doing my shit i was reading john gordon stuff in the morning i was doing a little gary v stuff i was garage sailing i was doing the whole thing and then the third week came and i'm like is that what my life's gonna be yeah right dude and i changed it but i have respect for those who are doing it because mostly it's a showcase of discipline to yourself and what you're doing and normally you can bear the fruit of that type of discipline going forward last question though speaking to somebody who might be a 4 a.m.

24:34or go ahead con man yeah rick it sounds like tampa bay turning into tampa bain with the clips we're seeing of reuben bain jr aside from vita vey and the problem on that d-line how imperative is it that reuben bain kind of makes his impact felt immediately and how has he been at camp with the entire defense well he's turning luke gettke into a revolving door right there and that that's happened a few days um the guy look he he looks and acts the part right of a franchise guys changing edge rusher. And I'm just telling you, man, every single rep, this guy is 110. And I just think that that's whether it's practice, whether it's going to be games, he hasn't played a single snap in the NFL, so you can't put him in a Hall of Fame.

25:19But it's still, he sets the tone, you know, and he's going to do that during the week, which I think is really important for these guys. He's everything is advertised. We'll let him play out his career and see if we see him in Canton one day. I don't want to put him there, but the guy for a young player, serious cat, man, and I'll tell you another guy. Josiah Trotter started a fight the other day with some big dudes in practice in the outdoor or the indoor facility, and that dude, as Todd Bowles says, he goes, that's the guy I wouldn't want to mess with right there. So they got a couple of really good young foundational pieces on defense to work with.

25:57Pat McAfee:Yeah, that's a West Virginia guy. Okay. And then you got Cristobal's guy down there. And everything we know about Cristobal is like, oh, their guys are going to want to fight you. He takes a lot of pride. He takes a lot of pride in the fact that if you come through his program, it's like the guys are going to work their asses off and they're going to want to fight you. Like that is kind of the style that he wants down there in Miami. I think that's the style that Miami wants. And they certainly have that. And now Tampa Bay is potentially reaping the benefit. We appreciate the hell out of you, Rick.

27:38Pat McAfee:Lane. He'll punch you in the face and eat your face at the same time. That's the guy we look for. I think it's a massive compliment, T.J., not a bad thing. I agree with you. I think that's one of the best compliments you can get is, you know, old school guy. And I think I've changed over the last 16 years, I would say, Pat. But, yeah, I'll still be the guy to get your back. Really? Are you immunized? Okay, let's move along. Let's move along. Let's move along. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. 28:10Pat McAfee:I think that's what everybody's saying. That's my quarterback. I think this signal is Greek for fifth. Okay. Okay, let's move along. Obviously, great years in Green Bay and in Detroit. Let's talk about these Lions. Not a lot of conversation coming out about the Lions. Obviously missed the playoffs last year. Ben Johnson goes down to Chicago. They have the run that they have. Can you just tell me vibes around team? Because we haven't seen MCDC press conference. We haven't seen MCDC and Applebee's commercial. No. We haven't seen any antics. We haven't seen a lot outside of Detroit. What are the vibes up there and expectations, TJ?

28:43I think you nailed it, man. I think that Dan said when they got back in, what was it, May or April, you know, for OTAs, that we're going to get back to business. And was there some noise last year about all these guys doing, whether it's podcasts or commercials or you're getting a little too Hollywood and getting away from the game? I don't know if that directly correlates, but obviously when you have a losing season, that's something that people point a lot of fingers at, right? So you definitely notice a change this training camp. I mean, it's been, you know, hey, we're just going to get back to work.

29:13We're going to change what we do. Dan Campbell, a big staple of what he's done in training camps in the past has also been, you know, the joint practices and going against other teams. They scrapped that this year, too. Like, we're just going to focus on ourselves. We're going to get back to what built us, you know, probably starting in that second half of the 2023 season. Let's get back to those fundamentals and the core identity of this team. So you definitely felt that. You've seen it. I mean, it's been a lot quieter, which I don't think is a bad thing. I think that these guys, they've all told you that, you know, when you win back-to-back division championships and go to the NFC Championship two years ago and then you miss the playoffs, man, like, there's – it's going to be a bad face in your mouth.

29:51So definitely just been a lot of work, I would tell you that. And just a lot of guys that kind of want to go out there and get back to, you know, the core basics of what put Detroit on the map here a couple years ago.

30:03Pat McAfee:Man, you forget how dominant Jared Goff was up there. Now that's all with Ben Johnson. Now granted, the offense scored a bunch of points last year, so people forget about that. Defense wasn't able to get a lot of stops and got a lot of injuries. And I think some people have said the defense looked a little bland, a little bit basic. Are they going to have to make some plays this year on that side? We shall see. But we obviously know Jared Goff offense specifically will only go how the protection will go. Go ahead, Tone. Yeah, Teej, the big difference between those winning seasons and last season was the offensive line.

30:30There was some turnover. There was some injuries. And it wasn't the offensive line that got them to the NFC Championship the year before. I know they bring in Kate Mays at center. They draft Blake Miller to play right tackle, I believe, out of Clemson. And then they're going to move Sewell over to left. Are we feeling better about the offensive line this year than we did last year? Yeah, I would say so. Well, I think that certainly, look, losing Graham Glasgow, and people can say what they want about him last year, but Taylor Becker on the left side was a staple for a decade over there for Detroit.

30:59Those are two leadership pieces that I think you're going to miss. But Panay Sewell, look, I think that just watching him at right tackle, he would just win blocks because he was just so dominant and just so much quicker and agile and athletic than everybody else he was playing. I think he's going to be even better at left tackle. He's going to be a Trent Williams-type guy where you don't have to worry about him. You don't have to game plan around him. You know that left side is going to be taken care of. Kate Mays, I mean, early returns. I think they've only done three days of pads so far in camp.

31:26But early returns have been very positive. They like what he can bring, not only in the run game and what Drew Petsing, the new offense coordinator, wants to do, but in the pass game as well and the communication because that's an important spot. And Blake, I think, is coming along. I mean, he's a rookie going against Aiden Hutchinson every single snap. And Aiden Hutchinson brings it, man. So there's going to be, I'm sure, some times where he's going to look at some film and probably feel a little dejected. Maybe it could hurt the confidence. But you've got to know deep down that whatever you do against Hutch, I mean, it's going to be easier once you get into games.

32:00Because there's not many guys out there like that. So they're starting to grow. I think they got definitely younger. But I think that there's still some healthy competitions across that offensive line room. And look at left guard. I think you've got maybe three or four guys that are competing there. So I think that they definitely feel better. about the youth that they injected into that group. And like you said, Tone, I mean, that is the staple of the Detroit Lions, especially on offense. We've got to be able to run the ball. We have to be able to incorporate that play-action pass where Jared Goff is just so dangerous and lethal, and we've got to be able to protect him on third down too.

32:36So I think they definitely feel better about that group. I don't know how it's going to shake out here at the end of training camp, but they've definitely got some guys that can go out there and compete and play at a high level.

32:44Pat McAfee:Did you guys think about backing up Ragnow's bones and rolling them back out there again? I should have. I'd love to. Did you guys do that last year? Legend, by the way. Yeah, I love Frank. Icon, legend. That was tough. Oh, my gosh. Unbelievable. Yeah, his hamstring might still be ripped into 17 pieces the way he made it sound last year. But, no, I think that train's probably done. But, no, they feel good about the guys that they got in that line. And you know what? Competition's going to make everybody better, man. You've got somebody breathing down your neck, and you realize from some of these guys, Christian Mahogany, who started a lot of games last year, right?

33:15You got a lot of competition now. You're in your third year. It's a big year. You're right? That brings the best out of everybody. I like good mahogany. Oh, yeah. Not as much as a pine or a cedar. You do look like a mahogany. You got a couple of mahogany desks. I could see you having a couple of mahogany desks at the Haas.

33:30Pat McAfee:Yeah, I was trying to look around, actually, see if I had any fucking mahogany around me right now. Is that? I mean, that surfboard. That might be mahogany. Nah, I think this is cedar. Could be good. Oh, yeah. It's a cedar. questionable could be redwood shit yeah it could be you know bryson de chambeau was out there with them things true i could see some mahogany in there yeah i could see some yeah you can see the darkness you don't know wood okay you ain't never touched a wood before okay i know wood that's fair thank you i'm not embarrassed to admit i don't know wood but yeah that is a correct statement about it i'm not a wood fanatic go outside that's crazy you seem like a big wood guy you big wood guy dude i know the wood yeah i know the lacquer that goes on top of wood oh yeah i've done some finishing of some wood you know i can actually done some keller matching and some wood before yeah i've been in the armish you don't know the amish wood okay tj yeah and i know my kids are watching in the other room oh this is great hey listen kids your dad loves wood yep Love getting his hands all over small little tiny wood.

34:37Pat McAfee:Yeah, I understand. Yeah, we're looking at you. A little bit. Yeah, we get it. We understand. We've been there. Last question from Detroit TJ is you play with some wood over there. TJ, what's the latest on Jameer Gibbs? It seems like he's at practice, not practicing. Obviously, Bijan gets done. JT gets done. Gibbs is next in line. More importantly, is this something that Lions fans and myself should be concerned about, or will this get done? Well, I'm not concerned, Fox. I mean, being down there at practice today, this thing feels imminent. You know, I think that especially with JT signing today, you've got a really good feel of where the market's at, right?

35:13It seems to be right around that 22, 22 and a half, whatever it might be that Bijan and Taylor got. So I'd be shocked. I mean, I don't want to break news. I mean, that's not my business. But I'd be shocked if this isn't done probably in the next 24 to 48 hours, let's call it. I know that they want him back at practice. He was back today. He was taking part in the walkthrough and the pre-practice stuff and a little bit of the skeleton stuff that the skills guys do. So he's getting back out there. And I think I saw one of the beat writers, Dave Burkett, who's always dialed in with the Detroit Lions, said, you know, Gibbs didn't talk after practice, but he asked him on the way out, like, hey, do you feel like a deal's done?

35:54He gave him a thumbs up. So this thing feels imminent. I don't think it's anything to panic about. and certainly nobody down there has been panicking about it. That's just the way it goes, man, right? Like, you got to wait. Sometimes you wait to see, you know, if some other guys sign some deals, you reset the market, and it is what it is. So I think this thing is, it's got to be, it feels like it's on the one-yard line, the one-inch line, let's call it. I think it'll be done by the weekend.

36:15Pat McAfee:Dot eyes, cross tees. TJ Lang says 24-48 hours, Jameer Gibbs has his deal done. Probably earlier than that, though, the way he was talking. I don't like to read into, like, inflection on voices, but it felt like you were saying a little bit earlier. I don't know if Mr. Pacini up there is going to enjoy what you're doing, letting information out of the house, but I do like that I'm communicating with him. You're the best. Pacini's my guy, buddy. We'll start manning some fashions. He's my guy. He gave me permission to say that. So let's go, Pacini. You're the best, ladies and gentlemen, Super Bowl champion, TJ Lane.

36:49Pat McAfee:Yeah, TJ. TJ's the best. He is. He's the best. He's a beaut. Literally, I didn't know him. And then Mike McCarthy told me if I had one guy that I had, you know, in a bar fight, it would be this guy. I'm like, need to meet that guy. And then immediately upon meeting him, you got to shit talk this guy just to see, you know, what level. Is this guy like a psycho or is this guy like a tough, super tough, just good, super tough mid-touch. You must be a psycho. Yeah. I mean, I think all those offensive linemen have that. And they do hand-to-hand combat every day. Every day. People forget that. You know, I used to hang out with a lot of different groups on teams.

37:25Pat McAfee:the offensive line was always a good time because they're always miserable. They're always hilarious. They're always self-deprecating. They're not trying to be stars. But there's a lot of drunk Watts that are smaller that see an offensive lineman. And whenever they get a little bit boozed up, they think to themselves, oh, the biggest guy in here, I need to go let him know. And then these – I've watched a couple of these just snatch up little humans and just be like, hey, this is not a game. Like this is not a – and then just like kind of throw people away. They're the pound-for-pound toughest group, probably of athletes out there, offensive linemen.

37:57Pat McAfee:And back in the day when TJ was playing, they were still doing – They were still getting, you know, the bang, boom. Now, were those healthier than electro-substations? Definitely. Let's go camping, ladies and gentlemen. Let's head out to Santa Clara to the epicenter of electricity. Ladies and gentlemen, the San Francisco 49ers camp has been riddled with injuries again. Stop if you've heard that before. Who's going to give us the inside? Well, at Lombardi himself, ladies and gentlemen, 49ers beat reporter, former Stanford swimmer. Oh, yeah. These guys swims to Alcatraz. Yeah, every day. Star. Every morning.

38:35Pat McAfee:Like the Diaz brothers? Yeah. Ladies and gentlemen, David Lombardi. Yeah, Lombardi. What stroke? I didn't know we were stroking. What are we stroking? I was in the bay this morning. I saw Alcatraz saw a sea lion too. Did it see you? Freestyle, obviously. Did the sea lion? The sea lion saw me, yeah. What did it do? Sometimes you come eye to eye with those guys. They're like mean bar bouncers though. You don't really want to mess with them. They'll attack you if you get a little too aggressive. So you kind of just mind your own business. A seal has licked my toe before. That was the weirdest thing about that.

39:12Pat McAfee:I didn't know they had a little mica in them. I respect that. Now, the dolphins, they'll hump you. So I think if you see the sea lions, that's okay. The dolphins, I think you need to start swimming quicker because they are trying to... Backstroke, maybe. Yeah, maybe take it in the front so they can get a full embrace. Actually, I think you should probably... Breaststroke? Do this one here because they won't know what to do with you. And how did this become a fucking stroke, by the way? How did humans start doing this? That is crazy. It's not efficient at all. Yeah, stupid. Yeah, my dad's swimmer.

39:46Pat McAfee:I don't know how that one became. Butterfly is even more ridiculous. I mean, ridiculous, but those guys, the butterfly. The butterfly will get you in shape, so I'll do that to, like, work out. But if I need to get from, like, point A to point B and you're fighting a current, because there's a lot of currents to Alcatraz, it's got to be freestyle. That's, like, the only way that you can fight some of that water. All right. I've been training in my pool with my daughter, so I think I'm about ready for the sea lion Alcatraz game. I'm very scared of water. I do not like water. I am not choosing to get into water ever, maybe.

40:18Pat McAfee:But I appreciate that you're a professional. It's the world's greatest cold plunge, though, because our water is always cold. And I get in every morning. I live pretty near the water in San Francisco. And then I head down to training camp. I'm on my way right now. And I feel like a million bucks. I swear on it at this point. Well, you better keep staying on the other side of the field from an electric substation. There's a lot of injuries. There's a lot of conversations. and we're listening to Maziano and Mike Greenberg on GetUp and neither of them want to say like, we don't want to believe internet conspiracies because they're super duper journalists, obviously, and we appreciate and respect them.

40:55Pat McAfee:But it does feel like more and more people are like, hey, these videos coming out of training camp, it looks like that substation is very on top of where these guys are practicing. And then you look at the amount of injuries and then you look at how many people are out and how this has just become a very consistent thing. John Lynch has come out and said we will look into this for sure we know the substation certainly has their defense as well I know that they don't believe that this is real and there's a Twitter account representing the substation I don't think that's the actual substation maybe from my understanding I'm not 100 sure but where do we stand on that conversation and this injury bug thing that the Niners have had for what five years now yeah is this just kind of what it is and why How do you think it is?

41:35Well, the injury bug, I think, has technically gone back to when they moved out of San Francisco. They've been practicing at this facility in Santa Clara for a long time, though, since the late 80s. So they've won Super Bowls practicing out of this facility. But they moved from Candlestick Park for games after the 2013 season. And you remember the NFC championship game of that 2013 season against Seattle. That's where Navarro Bowman tore his ACL. It really seems they've been snake bit by injuries in almost every single season since then. And the only two seasons that have been relatively less than average injuries have been 2019 and 2023.

42:14And those are the two seasons they went to the Super Bowl. So ever since they moved out of Candlestick, that's the way that I look at it. It just hasn't been good for the 49ers. Now, obviously, this year is coming off of a really bad one last season. I think there's a lot of PTSD from the fan base, from the media. A lot of the guys right now, they're playing it precautionary, right? Like Mike Evans is fine. He's sprinting on the side field. They just don't want Mike Evans to put in any more reps than he has to if his quads a little bit sore. Dajon Stribbling is fine. So I think that it's become kind of a product of the hysteria from last year has made it snowball into something that seems worse than it actually is this year.

42:57Pat McAfee:Okay, yeah, because it's hard not to just jump on board with all the conversation and conjecture about it. Because I hate seeing star players already out. And it's like, we love that Niners team. We appreciate that Niners team. But it's like every year we get super pumped and then inevitably it's just a heartbreak. I couldn't even imagine what the Niners fans are already feeling. And the substation conversation is only getting louder. I appreciate you saying they've been there since the 80s. So that's what the substation is saying. So maybe we should relax. But maybe it's a candlestick curse. I think they need to go get into a moonshine bath, right?

43:26Pat McAfee:That is what you guys get up in Detroit. Oh, yeah, whiskey back. Yeah, maybe it's a candlestick curse. That place was a certified shithole, but certainly an iconic place for baseball, obviously for football. I got a chance to play there. They had no doors on the stalls. It felt like you were playing literally in a sports documentary. You walked out, couldn't see. You had to walk through thing, and then you turn, and there's people sitting facing this way. The field is over here because of the whole setup. So it was a part of history. It was cool. yeah maybe they leave and that's why they're cursed it's not the substation okay last question Lombardi as we're trying to catch up on everything happening over there go ahead Ty yeah David just curious because it does seem like several guys on the D line have already dropped like flies and any and any time that the 49ers have been good in the recent future it seems like that D line is a massive part of it them being able to just kind of shuffle through guys and always be fresh we heard Vita Vea his agent basically said like he's going to be traded even though Jason Light said hey I I have no interest in trading him.

44:25The Bucs aren't going to trade him. Being that he is kind of close, you know, or grew up near the Bay Area, do you think John Lynch will check in on Vita Veya or any other, you know, D lineman out there? Because it does seem like they're already kind of, you know, working a step behind here. Well, Vita Veya went to high school in Milpitas, which happens to be six and a half miles from not only Levi's, but the substation. So he went to high school very, very close.

44:54Pat McAfee:So it's like a six-foot thing for COVID? Six miles is the right distance away from the substation? He was born in it. It's in his blood. Okay, sorry. Sorry. Yeah, so he might be immune to all of this, right, if he's from near the area. Oh, he's immunized. Got it. Okay, sweet. The report is that he wants to play for a California team. Obviously, the 49ers qualify. He's from right near the substation and Levi's Stadium. So if a trade does happen, and I heard Adam Schefter on your show the other day saying that he thinks that it's more possible than ever. If a trade does happen and Vita wants to force his way somewhere, he could refuse to negotiate with a non-California team.

45:34So if he wants to come back home, I'm sure most of the NFL, your Colts would love to have him too. I've heard you talking about that. So one thing about the Niners D-line is that the D-tackle position actually is relatively healthy. It's end right now, defensive end, where they're still waiting for Bosa to be fully back, Mikel Williams, those guys. But I don't think you would ever say no to Vita Vea if you could get him at a reasonable cost.

45:59Pat McAfee:Yeah, Mr. Lombardi, you know that I'm saying everybody's coming to the Colts. And I have no say in that Colts building, so don't take anything that I say for real. Remember, you're the journalists around here, okay? Not us. We've been told that numerous times. Even though it feels like we just got some good news. And did you know this? Let's do some journalism, man. Okay. The breaststroke, that's from ancient times, mimicking a frog. Ah, genius. Ah, so you think that's kind of how it all started. Yeah, before they even had fire, maybe. That's a swimming animal I'd like to mimic. 47:32Pat McAfee:Last year, I think Coastal Carolina said free beers. Free everything. Free everything for everybody. That was a good play. We liked that. We thought that was going to get a little sloppy, but we liked what they were doing. We liked that they were thinking ahead. What Akron has decided to do for their football team, next level. Hey, you buy a season ticket, guess what? You can call them plays for the team. Sweets sold out. Season tickets sold out. We bought season tickets for them just for a chance for one of our guys to potentially be an offensive coordinator during their home opener, which is currently taking place.

48:03Pat McAfee:They'd have a headset right next to this legend. Ladies and gentlemen joining us, the head coach of Akron. Football icon. Man who's been around ball for about 100 years and still has his absolute fastball. Ladies and gentlemen, Yinser, Joe Moorhead. Yay, Joe! How you doing, Coach? Patrick, how we doing? I'll tell you what, not as good as the person that wins this lottery and becomes an offense coordinator against Bobby Noe with zero experience. Can you please tell me about this genius, ideally? We see a lot of stupid marketing people. We meet a lot of them. They read these dumb books in college about how to sell stuff.

48:35Pat McAfee:In theory, everything works. And then they launch it into the moon. They go on their LinkedIn. They talk about how smart they are. And inevitably, it's ass. This, seemingly very widely received, is yes, we love this. And business-wise, it worked. How did we get here, Coach? And when are we finding out who's going to be your offense coordinator from the crowd? You got time for a quick injury update, Pat? Absolutely. All right. Summer, Bucko game. Secondarily, 52 years on this earth. 51 of them. One time at Kennywood. which some refer to as the cultural epicenter of the Western Hemisphere, completely dominated that.

49:11Hey, Moorhead Family Reunion, Commissioner's Pavilion at Boyce Park, and made sure we drove the family past Willow's Golf Range and Batting Cages where I learned to hit. And then, hey, the wave pool where I learned not to drown. I just want to make sure we got that in there.

49:28Pat McAfee:Now, on that note, that wave pool definitely got in some fights and certainly struggled to find that ladder as a little kid. The back end in the right corner, no question. Yes, exactly. Late night, too. Hop over fence. We're going off the top of that thing. Yeah, okay. This is East Hills of Pittsburgh lore. I'm happy to hear you guys are doing the same as us. It's a shame that the Oakmont Country Club took Oakmont East, too, because riding those garbage bags down hole 18 of Oakmont East was a great time in the winter. We could talk about this for days. Turner's T is spectacular. We can really go on and on.

50:00Pat McAfee:But let's talk about all of that leading to you and your team having the most genius concept marketing-wise that we've seen during the nil era and not only is it genius just in theory it actually worked sold out your suites for the first time ever sold a bunch of tickets and now you guys are going to actually have to do this how does this all how does this all end up working out and how did we get here joe well the credit the credit belongs to our athletic director dr goodrich and matt potter uh you know i was in the office uh you know scripting plays for practice and knock on the door and they come through and kind of, you know, put this idea in front of me and said, what do you think?

50:35And then the first part of me was like, this sounds absolutely crazy. And, you know, the more you thought about it and kind of the construct of it and how it's going to develop, I think, number one, in an era of college football where a lot of bad gets talked about, unfortunately, we have a chance to infuse some fun into it, give a fan a unique experience. but at the same time, you know, I'm a bit, you know, I want our kids to know that, hey, we're not going to do anything, you know, to put the outcome of this game in jeopardy, number one. And number two, you know, we don't want to do anything to disrespect the game or certainly, you know, Robert Morris, Coach Clark, and his staff.

51:10So at first I was a little bit hesitant, as you can understand, but the more we talked about it and kind of put a pan in pace, I'm like, hey, this could be a pretty cool thing.

51:17Pat McAfee:Bobby Moe, also Western Pennsylvania. We understand that they'll have some respect. Wale actually played for Robert Morris' football team at one point. So there is some icons and legends that have gone through there. I appreciate you saying this isn't state fair. This isn't a circus. We're still trying to win games, but it is an incredible marketing strategy. So how do you tell the lads that you're still trying to win when it's the opening drive of your home opener? So we bought season tickets, multiple season tickets. Okay. So, so we have multiple tickets here to potentially get in on this thing.

51:47Pat McAfee:And Tone already has the plays that he's calling. I mean, there's no question on what Tone Diggs from Plumborough is going to call. All right, Wiggle. 34 switchblade for the state championship my friends okay fake 23 blast with a backside george reverse that was remember the titans they also want a state championship bear on that one and then obviously i do think the annexation of puerto rico would work in modern football if it was executed properly let's get some of the mouth things alka-seltas let's get some alka-seltas as well okay so this is how tone immediately thinks whenever he sees this what is it actually going to be and how do you see it working whenever the person inevitably gets selected to be your offensive coordinator for your first drive of your home opener.

52:24Tom, here's the problem here. It's going to need to be three drives because that looks like damn three touchdowns. You're right. You're right, Coach. You're absolutely right. We're going to have to keep this damn thing rolling. Keep calling it. Well, here's the thing. And, you know, this will be, I think, my 19th year call in place, 29th overall. And I'm going to go through the weekly game planning process, you know, starting on Sunday, Monday, putting a game plan together, working it throughout the week, refining it, practicing it. And then, you know, my normal process is to script the openers on Thursday and Friday.

52:57So whoever wins a contest is going to come in on Thursday and Friday, hopefully have a folder or binder full of a bunch of plays that they would like to run. We'll sit down and show them kind of what we got going on and see if there's any kind of mesh to that. And then usually the opening script is anywhere from 10 to 12 plays in open field. And then we would also look at the third downs in the red zone. Hell yeah. Like with Tone, we won't get to a third down, so it wouldn't apply to him. But, you know, then you get down in the red zone. You kind of, all right, what do we like here? How do we tier these things?

53:28So, you know, I think it's going to be a really neat collaborative effort where we can take what we're doing this week in addition to what they're bringing to the table and hopefully put some points on the board.

53:38Pat McAfee:I can't wait to see it. If you score Tud on that drive, it's going to be epic. It's going to be awesome. And monkey see, monkey do. You know, a lot of people are going to just be bringing in some drunk rich guy to come call plays. It's not going to work, but we know that it will with you. Now, there has to be a question about the modern state of ball because this is obviously happening because of that. Tone has it for you here, Coach. Yeah, Coach, you've obviously done everything. You've been an OC at a Power Four conference. You've coached in the SEC. You've been a head coach in the SEC. You're a legend at Fordham for what you did there, and now you're in the MAAC as a head coach.

54:07So how does it feel in this modern day? Is it hard knowing that your best players are most likely, after the season, going to move on to a Power Four conference because that's where the money is greater and that's what they've earned? And how do you come to that situation with your players and recruiting and everything at the end of the season with them? That's a great question. And I think a group of five schools, roster management has become an incredibly tricky proposition. In the past three years, we've lost 37, 39, and 41 of our scholarship players, 85 players to the portal. And this past year, 12 of our best 15 went from our school to Power 4 programs.

54:48so um it's challenging for us in terms of jeez what the hell does that mean so what are you going

54:56Pat McAfee:in the transfer portal to refill that obviously or is it all for you recruiting and you just understand that your high school recruiting class is inevitably going to be with you like what are you focusing on and how do you rebuild a team or culture with all that change which is inevitable in the modern day it feels like especially for an akron type school yeah well we didn't have any revenue share up until this past December, and now we have a mere pittance, which isn't like, so when you understand the constraints and what you're dealing with, essentially here's how it is. I really wanted to start this thing by recruiting half of the class with high school and half with portals and JUCOs.

55:28Now that's just not realistic. So my approach is when you lose a one, you got to replace him with a one. So for example, we had a defensive tackle go to Texas Tech. Well, he's a starter and he was a returning all-MAC player. Now you're going to go into the portal or to JUCO and replace him with a starter. you can't replace that guy with a developmental player. Now, if you lose a backup on the depth chart, now you can replace him with a backup. If you lose a three or a developmental guy, you can replace him with developmental, depending on the depth at each individual position. But yeah, losing guys who they come in, really didn't have any other offers, or they weren't playing at bigger schools and come down, you develop them, they produce.

56:06And quite honestly, when they come into semi-pat, I have two questions. why are you leaving and what's your plan if I agree with why they're leaving like if they can make life-changing money and they could go to a bigger school and and have an opportunity to play I tell them they should go now sometimes they'll say things to me and I don't agree with the reason I tell them they should stay and now they don't always listen but but that's fine and then I tell them you can't go into the portal hoping something happens because hope is not a strategy like you're going in there you better have a pretty damn good idea or where you want to go so there's sometimes kids go in and I tell them, hey, that's awesome.

56:40You should go. Sometimes I disagree, but they should never just enter hoping they land somewhere because that usually don't end up well.

56:47Pat McAfee:Yeah, but Coach, you can't talk to any other teams before they get a portal because that's tampering. You know, it's... That never happens. What are we talking about? It's funny that we all just laughed literally at even the thought of that. But that is... I don't think that's just the modern world. Obviously, college football since the beginning of time, and I think you would know better than us, has always had people working around this system now the system just involves millions and millions of open dollars being spent everywhere so fascinating stuff i appreciate you continuing to fight through think of great ideas now let's say we have success here early connor has the actual last question for you coach yeah coach tone showed you his plays i know dan dockage threw his hat in the ring big cat uh myself i have some plays as well is this a situation where let's say they go out you guys go out against bobby moan And this guy who came in with the binder on Thursday or Friday, or girl on Thursday or Friday, and they just kind of light you up.

57:40All of a sudden you got all these ideas. They go down and you score a touchdown on the first drive. Is this like a ball's back situation where then they get to call maybe the second drive or maybe the opening drive of the next home game? What is kind of the end goal? Job. Full job, yeah. Do we get a full-time job out of this by chance? Listen, we put the first one in the box and score a touchdown. I might hand him the damn call sheet in my headset and he'd say, keep rolling. Okay. They don't replace my ass with this guy as a play caller. So, yeah, who knows? We put that first thing in the box.

And the Cardinals got a lot of new faces over there trying to establish something. Okay, let's pivot away from tonight's game. Let's talk about some storylines. Joining us now, senior NFL insider for ESPN, friend of the program, Michigan man, Adam Schefter. Yeah, baby, Schefter. Schefter, thank you so much for joining us. Aaron Donald worked out with the Rams yesterday. Sean McVay said it was a great trial. It was a great trial, whatever the case is.

1:06:21Pat McAfee:he'd been very open that Aaron Donald had been working out of their facility. Obviously, TMZ saw him working out there. Feels like Aaron Donald is not being shy, and neither are the Rams being shy, about the possibility of him rejoining the Rams. Is the story still the same for you, where he's trying to find out if he's in game shape, if he wants to do it, and inevitably it's going to be a slow roll until probably after Australia for Aaron Donald? Is that where we sit right now, or how do you kind of view the whole Aaron Donald going to the Rams-Avengers situation right now? I don't think there's a rush on the timeline, but I think the timeline's fluid to me.

1:06:55Like you say after Australia, I don't know if he feels great in two weeks. Could he come back and sign at that point? I don't know why not. I know that some people believe it may not happen until into the start of the season. Certainly an option. But this is all based on how he feels and the type of form that he thinks he can regain. If he could be close to the Aaron Donald that was one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, and he's going to come back. And that workout this week was a part of this process. He wanted to have a helmet on during the workout. The Rams did at their training facility.

1:07:33And if he's got a helmet on, a team-sanctioned helmet at their facility, the Rams must report it to the NFL, which is how it shows up on the transaction wire as a workout for the Rams because they don't want to violate any rules here. But we don't know exactly what that means with Aaron Donald being any closer to a decision. Obviously, he's still strongly considering it. I know people have said, like I said to you, that it would be about Miles Garrett, but it's about Kobe Turner and Brandon Fisk and Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford and all those guys that he loves playing with as well. so there's a lot that goes into this it certainly feels like it's trending that way i think we all believe it'll go that way but he is not there quite yet i want to let you know i sent a message

1:08:18Pat McAfee:a dm standard hasn't been read okay okay maybe still sleeping maybe still working out we'll see but i i did try to do some journalism because i just want to know if how long should we take hey is this soon or is this i i don't i think we're making you a bad guy with how often we're talking about you potentially coming back. That's kind of what it goes. Don't want to do that because everybody thinks you're the Terminator, actually. And I just want to know, is this how we... Because I don't want to be talking about this every day. Strictly because I don't want to... Huh? I just think that as long as he hasn't made a decision and committed, it's going to come up on a regular basis.

That's the way it is. Yeah, and I'm done with it being beat to death. That's why I sent a message. I'm like, hey, listen, I would just like to know how much I should be hammering this right now. Because if this is going to be a little bit, we can hit it. Obviously, everybody's excited. We love them. But as opposed to beating it to death, like what Shefty just said, he's tweeting pictures of workouts. And it's going out there.

1:09:25Pat McAfee:And everybody, hey, is he? Is he? Is he? Is he? It's like, it feels like he is. And I'm excited for it. I talked to Robert Mathis yesterday, and he was like, hey, the offside guy. You got Miles Garrett here. You got Aaron Donald here. I mean, that quarterback's probably getting flushed. Oh, yeah. I mean, I think, AJ, all you got to do is – Yep, complimentary pass rushers. All you got to do is just kind of just wait, right? Hopefully he flushes right to you, and you fall into like 15 and a half sacks. Yeah, I think there's a chance that that is real. Okay, let's get off of the Aaron Donald story because he's in consideration of greatest football player of all time coming back.

1:10:01Pat McAfee:So we are very thankful for that. And we do not want people to think negatively about him because of how excited we all are about the possibilities, which is why we don't want to beat the story to death, Shafter. Okay, sports are happening. Now, there's another story that is certainly getting pounded as well. And it had a big day yesterday. Seven touchdowns for a guy that's guaranteed$230 million. AJ has a question for you about Cleveland, Shafty. Yeah, Shefty, what's the latest? What are you hearing day-to-day that's going on in Cleveland? We see these stats, it seems, every single day. They're great, and I'm giving it to Sean Watson.

1:10:33You see that number right there in the middle. Seven touchdowns, zero interceptions, 17 out of 20 in training camp. What are you hearing from Cleveland, and how close is this competition? I guess, who has the edge right now? Well, I think that the fact that they opened the season on the road in Jacksonville, then play the next week in Tampa, two road games, to me, they might want to go with a veteran to start the season. But again, it won't surprise me if it's Watson early on and Shador for the bulk of the season. Like I could see that. We're talking about who wins the starting job, but you also have to ask yourself which of these quarterbacks is going to play the most.

1:11:14Now, if Deshaun Watson comes back and plays well, he's going to keep that job. And if he struggles and they don't win, then you have to go get a long look at Shador to figure out how effective he can be as a starting quarterback in the NFL before a quarterback heavy draft in which you have two number ones. So there's a few different ways to look at this Browns quarterback situation. The small version is like, OK, who's going to start opening day, but who's going to play the most this season? and that wouldn't surprise me if it turns out to be Shadour, despite the fact that Deshaun had maybe his best day at camp yesterday with all those touchdown passes and completions.

1:11:53Pat McAfee:I like that you gave us a small version. Siciliano actually tweeted that Todd Monken said in his press conference that quarterbacks are getting better. I could see that yesterday. Ultimately, the one that will play is the one that can help us score points. Well said, Todd. Okay, so that's who's going to be back. The guy gets it. Yeah, Todd Monken seems like a genius. I heard his speech to the team yesterday afterwards. I love that. I love the way he speaks. I like the attention that seemingly every player is paying to him. Shador is saying his praise is glowingly with the way he's handled this entire situation.

1:12:20Pat McAfee:I assume Deshaun is saying the same type of stuff. Dylan Gabriel, though, he's four completions, two touchdowns. You kidding me? That's 50 % of the times he's completing a pass. These youngs that just get handed these keys and all the olds that control the companies, that built the companies and everything, they're scared of social media. These people got it. They don't. These people suck at social media. If they're available to get hired for your team, they probably really suck at social media because the people that are good at social media are not available to be hired. So let's just know that, Shefty, as we're looking at these ass social media accounts around the NFL who clearly don't know ball and are making their franchises look worse with every single post.

1:14:53Pat McAfee:That's not their fault. They're not supposed to be there. They just got hired because people had no idea who they're supposed to hire in this world. We got to know that. 1:18:18Yeah, I do, Shefty. Is there anything like there's a lot we were looking at, there's a lot of veteran free agents out there anymore. I know this is a time at camp where injuries happen like that. Is there any updated news on any of those, especially after Steph Diggs gets signed to the commanders yesterday? And were any other teams in on Steph Diggs? Yeah. The Chiefs reached out at one point. The Dolphins reached out. The Raiders reached out. He had some conversations with some teams. But I think it was going to be Washington all along for Stephon Diggs. It just made too much sense. Especially, like, I think at one point Washington was definitely considering Brandon Ayuk.

1:18:53and a lot of people thought that would get done. And then there were a bunch of social media posts, speaking of social media, and that helped create the opportunity for Stephon Diggs in Washington. And he gets the one-year deal worth up to$12 million. Keenan Allen's still out there. His name's been mentioned a few times. We'll see if anybody steps up and signs him. A guy like Von Miller is out there as a notable pass rusher. Tyree Kill still recovering from his injury. Our friend Kyle Van Nooy, every year seems like he helps teams. I don't know why he's still out there, but he is. I mean, there's some players that can help.

1:19:33Austin Eckler is another one. I don't see him on that box anywhere. But Zach Ertz, working out with him the other day. There's some guys out there that are looking for work. Look, we've seen it already. The worst part of training camp is the injuries. and teams are suffering injuries. When they lose a player, sometimes you've got to go find another player and there's some quality help available.

1:19:55Pat McAfee:Yeah. Just find somebody else for a place. Coach Moorhead told us. Stephon Diggs in Miami would have been a wild thought. Yeah. That would have just been. And then the Raiders as well? Where's that? Vegas. You know, listen. I don't know. Diggs, I think, wanted to go to Washington. It was going to be Washington, maybe KC, but Washington made the most sense. Maryland guy. I know, but agreed. I'm happy he's going there. I am very happy he's going there. Now, granted, going home brings on its own set of things that could potentially come alongside of it, but I am happy that Stephon Diggs is getting another opportunity to focus on ball and do what he's great at, which is play wide receiver.

1:20:35Pat McAfee:I think there's a lot of potential in a lot of places. I'm happy he goes to the commanders. Going home, obviously a different combo, but I'm excited for Jaden Daniels, Dan Quinn, who fired every coach that he had coming into this year, so it might be a brand new staff. Are they ever going to win a baseball game again? They've lost six straight. Does this come and go in baseball seasons because of how long they are? 1:26:19Pat McAfee:So maybe they're doing this for baseball right now, Haas. What is your take on the Dodgers slide right now? So, first of all, Pat, Be careful with some of the admins on Twitter, man. Don't believe everything you read about baseball and if it's ruining baseball and all that. The Dodgers, they don't even... Okay, okay, I like that. We hate the... Okay, not all the admins, by the way. There are good admins out there. Majority of them, absolute shite! That was a great rant you went on. I loved it. That was great. Thank you. But the Dodgers, they're at the point where they're so loaded and they got a veteran squad where they're good on the regular season.

1:26:54Like, we don't see them lose five or six in a row, So they're not playing their best ball right now, but they're all about getting their guys healthy for October. The pitching, the pitching is a funny situation. You got to get the arms lined up. You got to get these guys on a rotation every five days to make sure that their arms are fresh for the October playoff race. So I think the Dodgers are lining all that up while teams are now trying to win every game, like it's game seven. So I'm not panicking at all about the Dodgers and God forbid a team goes out there and tries to win and get the best player on the market.

1:27:24that's all the Dodgers have been doing the last couple years.

1:27:26Pat McAfee:Yeah, they've got them all, haven't they? They certainly have. Now, the best player on baseball field right now might be with the Cubs who just got done sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers. Go ahead, Ty. Yeah, Haas, how big of an argument do you think PCA has to be the MVP? Because, you know, I mean, he has just been scorching hot for what seems like the last two months, really. And it kind of brings into question, yeah, he did slip ahead of Shohei there for odds-on favorite to win NL MVP after hitting two homers yesterday, even though Shohei hit two homers as well. But it's like the age-old question, who brings more value to their team?

1:28:02I think you could argue that if you take PCA away from the Cubs, they'd maybe be like a 500 team, whereas if the Dodgers don't have Shohei, they're still probably the best team in the majors. Where do you shake out on this? Because it does seem like ultimately Shohei is going to win the MVP, But as of right now, if PCA keeps up doing what he's doing, he's going to have one of the most historic seasons of all time. Yeah, PCA's killing it. There's no doubt about that. He's the odds-on favorite now at minus 120 to be the MVP. So this is tough, man. This is a really, really hard debate because before yesterday's game, I was still on Shohei Otani to be the MVP.

1:28:41He's pitching and hitting. And then you watch the game yesterday. It was a day game. Shohei leads it off with a homer. It's like, okay, now he's making that MVP race. like he's separating himself and then PCA leads off the next inning with a homer they both hit two in the same game but this is where the conversation for me really really is a big question mark because everyone talks about war the wins above replacement player and PCA is leading Shohei Otani by a full run so my thing with war is it's an estimated stat so that's seven games if that's PCA's war that's seven wins above a replacement player that you're getting from PCA in center field but But who is going to be the replacement player for Shohei Otani?

1:29:21Because he's pitching. He's hitting. I know he hasn't pitched in a while. He still has, you know, 89, 85 innings on the season still. So that's my thing is who's going to replace Shohei Otani because no one's doing what he's doing. And real quick, if you just flip-flop, and this is nothing against PCA because I love this dude. He's electric. He's about to come into Kansas City for the weekend. I'm calling those games. I'm fired up for it. but if you were to flip-flop teams and PCA goes to the Dodgers and he's on a loaded team and Shohei goes to the Cubs, I think it's a different situation. So I don't like when they compare the MVP race like that.

1:29:56And the war situation baffles me because, again, how do you accumulate this? Because what Shohei's doing, nobody else is doing at all.

1:30:03Pat McAfee:Yeah, Shohei, since Babe Ruth, they say, and Babe Ruth only did it for a certain amount of time. And it's a different era, obviously, with what Shohei's been able to accomplish. and obviously he has built baseball into something, the juggernaut that it is right now. It feels like baseball is having a moment. That's why we can't have baseball stop, even though these greedy-ass players are never going to agree to a deal. And on the other side, this greedy-ass league, the bunch of billionaires are never going to agree to a deal. It feels like that is inevitable. Hopefully they're able to get something done.

1:30:36Pat McAfee:Back to what we were talking about with the MVP with Shohei in PCA. Most home runs in June, July, and August. Junior Common Arrow, 20. Yes. Very good. Stud. Also, two stolen bases. Pretty athletic. Hunter Goodman, he's at 20. Wow. Two stolen bases. Okay, Hunter. Catcher. That's pretty good. That's pretty good. That's all his knees, though. He's not stealing bases. Yeah. Luis Garcia Jr., 19 dingers. Wow. Two stolen bases. He's a Yankee now, Todd. Yeah. Two stolen bases. That's pretty good. PCA, 19 home runs. 16 stolen bases. So his 35 home runs and stolen bases are obviously seven more than any other player over the span.

1:31:14Pat McAfee:And then on defense, the war – I mean, he's – this guy's unbelievable. And there was a time this season, which is why I think baseball is so crazy because how long the actual season is, there's like five different seasons within an actual season. There was a season in which this season they said that this guy was a scumbag and this guy can't throw a baseball. They were saying this guy can't throw a baseball. This guy's a scumbag. This guy's terrible. This guy is not good for baseball. He fought through that. There was a lot of very public scrutiny, very embarrassing stuff being said about PCA.

1:31:46Pat McAfee:And then when he would go throw the damn ball, I mean, it was ending up in the dugout instead of where it was headed. It was like, man, is this guy broken right now? You've seen that. He fought through all of that. Now he's the odds-on favorite to win the MVP. That's a special story. I really like that type of grit. I like that type of mental toughness. And it feels like that epitomizes what baseball is as a whole. PCA, man. And PCA is fiery, Pat. He's got that dog in him. I got to spend the spring training. My last year when I was with the Cubs, I was with PCA in spring training. He was with us in camp.

1:32:17And my first day there, I'm taking batting practice in the stadium, and I hit a ball to right center. I'm thinking it's going to go over the fence. All of a sudden, this little white dude lefty in center field jumps up and robs it. And I'm like, man, who the hell was that? So I hit another ball. Is that Peter Parker? On the left center on the other side of the field. and I kind of joke with him like, yeah, go catch that one. All of a sudden, this dude just beelines right over there across the whole entire outfield, catches this ball. And I'm like, who the hell is this kid? Obviously, I knew who PCA was, and then I figured out he was the kid from the trade that they got from the Mets.

1:32:50But he is electric, man. And at Wrigley, Zito can tell you, it's cold as shit out there at Wrigley Field. So pretty much until mid-May for the Cubs hitters, it's very hard to hit when it's that cold. So when it heats up in the summer, that's when PCA started going off. So there's no looking back for PCA.

1:33:06Pat McAfee:Yeah, I love it for him. I do. I sent him a text, let him know. I thought he was his dog, man. I don't like what they're saying about you. You know, and we got no response. I don't know if he hated that or loved that, but we are huge PCA supporters. Now, let's get back to some other superstars around MLB, and let's talk about something you might be familiar with. Go ahead, Tone. Yeah, Haas, obviously you played, what, over 1 ,600 games, I think, at first base. Bryce Harper has done that the last five years, but for the first 10 years of his career, he was playing out in the outfield majority of the time right field.

1:33:35He's been back out in right field the last few games. How hard do you think it is for Bryce this late in his career to move back out to right field? How do you feel about that switch? And the Phillies with Luis Reyes have been pretty hot lately. Yeah, that's a big switch, especially when you go from infield to outfield. That's way different. That's a lot more long-distance running. And those balls in the gap that Bryce is going to have to go track down, that's way different than first base. First base, you've got none of that going on. There's no long distance. But I tell you what, man, Bryce is athletic, and he's made both transitions, the one in from first base and then the outfield when he first got drafted because he came in the league as a catcher, or the minor leagues, professional baseball.

1:34:12So he's very versatile. He can play every position. Your Italian brother out here, Jack Caglione, man, he's made that transition from first base to right field look super easy and completely different situation here because Kansas City, big ballpark, a lot of ground to cover in the outfield. Bryce Harper out there at Citizens Bank, right field, shorter porch. You guys saw at the Derby, So not as much ground to cover. So I think Bryce will be all right in that transition.

1:34:36Pat McAfee:A little lonely though, right? At first you guys were kind of talking to everybody, right? Is that kind of part of the gig? Yeah, but then you get to know a lot of guys, man. You get to first base and it's, hey, what's up, buddy? How you doing? Where's a good spot to grab some food tonight? And you get to get a lot of good conversations, man. You get to know a lot of people. Yeah, that's why the mayor loved it over there. You know, you're starting to get to know everybody. Yeah, legend. Sean Casey. Yeah. Legend. First base community loves the mayor, obviously. Great coach. Yeah, I found out. Found out you got three hamstrings, Pat, because Sean Casey tore all of them when he was playing with the Savannah Bananas.

1:35:11Pat McAfee:Off the boat. This guy tore three hamstrings. That is a – but, boy, he could slap it. Oh, yeah. I mean, he could do whatever he wanted to do. Anywhere he wanted. And then also over there on first base, hey, good to see you. How's the family? Yeah. Oh, okay. All right, we got you. Any hitting ball tricks out of you? Nah, no hitting ball tricks, man. I'm a man of character, Pat. I'm not going to look you in the eyes and lie to you. No way. I like that. Ethical baseball. How do we feel about pitchers celebrating with big-time splits after a strike? Strike! Suck it! I like the athleticism. I appreciate everything about it.

1:35:47Pat McAfee:It feels like this is something that hitters will not appreciate at the highest level, but I think this is what he's done his entire pitching career. It's just a part of his excitement level and the way... Yippee! Spider-Man punch down there at the bottom. How will big leaguers feel about this? And I saw a couple guys look back at him, and it did feel like they were thinking, do I fight this guy right now? Like, how do we do this? How should we expect this to go with him? There's nothing about this that I like. I hate everything about this. I mean, what is going on? We're jumping up on the mound.

1:36:23I get it, man. Like, this is his winter ball deal. This he plays with emotion. but Major League Baseball, the big leagues, you just feel like there's a different, like it's a different game. It's a different level of class you stick to, I guess. Not that this dude, yeah, is not a classy person, but the antics, I just hate everything about this, Pat. I can't even lie to you.

1:36:43Pat McAfee:Okay, 2026. Do we still have guys that'll just let three go by just so they can see one of these and say, all right, I'll do it. Is that still a thing or no? Do we think in the game? and what do you think ultimately happens here because your natural reaction me not baseball guy my natural reaction is i feel like baseball guys will hate this this seems like something in the history of baseball that would cause a lot of brawls potentially for showing somebody up like this but bat flips have gotten gigantic you know yeah this is this is for me this is just kind of drawing the line like i get it i'm not going to be one of these old school guys we're like no you You can't show any emotion, nothing like that.

1:37:24But I think when you direct stuff to your team, like PCA, that pimp job he did in St. Louis when he hit the homer, threw the bat, flipped it down, looked at his dugout. Like when you direct it to your team, I'm good with that. When you start doing these kind of antics, I just think it shows up the other player. And I don't know, man, it's different. But again, these players now, man, like old school players, if you were to do that against them, someone's getting drilled on your team the next inning, that's not going to happen now. So that's why these antics more and more are happening.

1:37:53Pat McAfee:I didn't even think about the middle finger fastball. Hey, you. Yeah. Hey, this is because of him. Just know that this is coming right at you. I like the kind of policing of yourselves that baseball has done for a long time, seemingly. That is. Could you imagine if Jason Kendall was that guy's catcher? I mean, Jason Kendall, Benito Santiago 2AJ, they're taking a mound visit. And they're going to say, hey, buddy, listen, cut the crap. Okay, let's get this out. We're not doing that. I'd rather you throw four straight balls than do that after you strike somebody out. I respect and appreciate the fact that this guy's doing it, though.

1:38:26Pat McAfee:Because I'd seen him in, I don't know what league you were mentioning there. It sounded like you were talking about Winter Ball, which is maybe a lower league. I'd seen, you know, I had eyes on this guy the last couple weeks. Because he had been moving his way up. He's potentially going to get called up. And on the internet, I've been seeing it. And I was like, okay, when he gets to the show, though, because of what you said, like different organization, will he cut it? It's like, yeah, right. bro, I've been waiting for this one. It is the biggest, you know what I mean? He was. Does his own team say something?

1:38:54Like, does the manager tell him, like, hey, stop? Or is this, can you even.

1:38:57Pat McAfee:And why aren't people getting beaned anymore? Hey, we're 30 games under 500, dickhead. Knock it off. Okay, so will somebody say that? There you go. Why doesn't beaning happen anymore? Just really doesn't, I don't know, man. The policing, like the unwritten rules, guys don't really pay as much attention, I would say, as they used to. and that's just something that's slowly faded out of the game, I guess. But if I was this dude's teammate, I would definitely just say, hey, buddy, listen, this league is hard in itself. You don't want to draw any unnecessary attention to yourself and have these big league players, the best from all over the world, lock in that much more.

1:39:34Like, good luck if you're going to do that.

1:39:35Pat McAfee:Imagine Schwarbo just saying, this guy's cute. Yeah. Hitting one right back at him. Well, that's what I was going to say. This guy's not ready to feel the position at all. He's going to take a comeback right off the throat or the face. He might die. He might not make it. No, we don't want that. I'm not saying I want that, but get your fucking glove down there, pal. Okay, get ready. And when that happens, Ty, what if the hitter started jumping up and down and started shooting spiderwebs out of him? Exactly what he's doing. Come on, you know what I mean? He is throwing 101 from the left-hand side, so he's going to be around for a long time.

1:40:03We're going to find out.

1:40:04Pat McAfee:And he has a strikeout celebration. This guy's getting ponches on the regs. This is something that he has to dance. He has a celebration that he does. I mean, he's getting high. I actually heard that he's running the Jets' Instagram and Twitter page. All right. Last question here, Haas. We talked too much about baseball already. Yeah, Haas, obviously the story of baseball right now is the Boston Red Sox being possibly the greatest team in the history of baseball. 25-3, there it is. Their greatest streak in the history of the Boston Red Sox, which is nuts to even think about. When it comes to this team, you know, one thing, you mentioned lies going around the internet.

1:40:42that Roman Anthony going through that right now. None of those stories are true. He's just in Florida at this time. They're not true. What do you expect with, you know, Roman Anthony going through rehab? Can he come back and kind of hop right into the lineup and be great? And also, we're not worried at all about like, hey, this is sweet that it's in August, but this team's hot too early. Do you just think that this is one of those things where all of a sudden the Boston Red Sox are a team of destiny. Roman Anthony is going to get healthy, come back, hit 30 home runs, Garrett Crochet is going to get healthy, come back and pitch, you know, scoreless baseball.

1:41:16What is your thoughts about this? Tony Tony's boy. Yeah. Tony Tony's boy. Hey, Tony Tony's boy is going to come back healthy. And dude, the Boston Red Sox. God bless them, Connor. I do not know how this is happening, man. Again, when they got rid of Cora and Bear Tech, it's like they're done, man. There's no way they can succeed after that. And they pretty much turned into one of the best teams, if not the best team in baseball, man. And when you just named off those names, Crochette, Roman Anthony, Tony, Tony's boy, if those guys come back into this lineup, they're just going to keep getting better and better.

1:41:50Sonny Gray, he's been, I mean, he's moved himself into that AL Cy Young race, if not the favorite. He is balling right now. I feel like Sonny Gray, we graduated same year. He's been trying to retire for the last three years, but he just keeps putting up great seasons. So he's got to stick around and play. But he's going to be a top three Cy Young guy this year, if not the guy.

1:42:10Pat McAfee:30-5. Best winning span in the history of the Red Sox. They've won like nine straight series. They just got that 15-game winning streak. They started another one right after that. Nobody in the American League wants to see the Red Sox in the postseason. You know what I want to see? I want to see Tony Tony's boy back in that batter's. Me too. And I want to see them continue to win. Just in the batter's box too. His arm's going to be healthy. That all is going to happen because he had a little PCA situation going on when people said, this guy forgot how to throw a baseball there for a while. He just got a noodle arm.

1:42:44That's not true. He threw a guy out at home multiple times. The problem was, I don't want to go back to the world baseball class. But his arm was a little sore. Thanks a lot, D-Row.

1:42:55Pat McAfee:I saw D-Row's baseball's fault potentially for setting it up there. D-Row was doing what he had to do, especially for the troops, which we. Hell yeah. Thank you, troops. Thank you. Hosmer didn't salute the troops. I did. Check the tape. Check the tape. Okay, okay. I was looking at the troops. I was looking at the troops this way. I thought you potentially just said, I'm not doing it. That would have been a decision you would have had to make. That would have been your entire decision there. People would have certainly talked about it. Alright, I'm done with baseball. I need Roman Anthony though to come back and then continue to win.

1:43:32Pat McAfee:They will. Because if they don't, God, you Boston people are going to get so loud with that guy. I'll say this, too. They have a pitcher named Peyton Toll. Might have the best personality in all of Major League Baseball. So if you haven't seen his interviews, go do that. Better than Mizorowski and Paul Skeens. Are we talking personality? Is that what you just said? Some people don't like Miz and Skeens' personality, which I think is kind of weird. Hey, is he done? What's going on with Skeens? Last question. I was done with baseball. Now I'm done with baseball. Still sore from saluting the troops.

1:43:59Pat McAfee:Yeah, he was saluting the troops. I will never doubt Tony Tony's boy or Paul Skeens. Those are two baseball players I'll never doubt. Paul Skeens will be back. There's something going on that he's not telling. He'll be back. Exactly. That's exactly what happened. He pulled his elbow saluting the troops. He only gave up two hits last week. I like that, but he's throwing 91. I mean, he's Todd Schmidt. Four walks, man. He's Todd Schmidt on the boundary. Hey, can I spin the narrative high once? Three in one inning? Paul, we love you, and we understand that you did, like Connor mentioned, you did probably hurt yourself saluting all the vets so hard during the World Baseball Classic.

1:44:35Pat McAfee:But I am starting to get a little worried because I'm watching everybody else pick up speed at his age, and he's going down, and I'm like, is this guy hurting, not telling anybody? What is he doing? Paul, we love you, pal. And maybe he's just trying to, you know, stay with the Pirates. I think that's the case. He loves the city. Maybe that's what he's doing right now. He loves the city. That's what he's doing right now. He didn't like the big environment of the WBC. No, Pirates go through that environment. We're not going to be able to play Venezuela and stuff, but we'll play in the World Series.

1:45:05Pat McAfee:Yeah, there's no Ponche stuff going on, but we'll take on the people from the other league. Yeah, the AL. Yeah, because we're definitely in the – Unfortunately, you guys got two teams who are much, much, much, much, much better than you in your same division. So it's going to be tough. Who? Yeah, Reds are 7-3 in the last 10. We're not talking about the Reds. They fucking stink. PCA? Yeah, you got the Cubbies and you got the Brewers. This year, yeah. PCA's in our division? Yeah. And Miz? Yeah. What? And Sal Stewart. Sal Stewart, yeah. Need to get the – owner needs to get out of that division. Is there another division we can go to?

1:45:39Pat McAfee:They are talking about – Yeah, they'll let you switch. Kind of moving things around so it's a little more regional. Well, Cincinnati's – I'll tell you what, Hedl Central is the most regional probably division you've got, though. Yeah, it is. And if they did that, then you'd probably be looking at a division with maybe like the Phillies, the Mets, and the Yankees, and potentially like the Red Sox, too. So I don't know if that'd be great. Buccas did their job. That'd be awesome. We should do that. Doesn't like North Carolina have a team we can get in there with? You know? No. Maybe Kentucky? I think the North Carolina baseball team would probably beat the Pirates.

1:46:06Pat McAfee:Let's relax. The Cubs have won. They were a good baseball team. Owen was the center fielder. He's coming to the Pirates. I don't need you to talk about that. Paul Skeens, left-handed with Slice and Dice, that UNC team. Please have a little respect. He might have more VLO on that side anyway. Well, wait. All right. Cubs have won one World Series in 100 years. Okay. That's a good point. but we have one hey um thank you for bringing baseball thank you haas we appreciate you don't quit on us pat don't quit on us well it depends on if you guys get a deal done i'm gonna be honest you guys don't get a deal done and we might be worried about that in 2026 can't have it where we know what businesses look like and sports businesses look like and how leagues operate at this stage of life we very much understand how people profit off of leagues and how fans are attracted to live sports more than anything else.

1:46:54If we can't get a deal done then, and you guys miss the entire season,

1:46:59Pat McAfee:and I'm saying you too because you're probably part of this whole thing, I made a decision that I'm done with baseball for the rest of my life. Yeah, but we live in Indy. We got the Clons. So we still have a baseball team. I'll be a Savannah Banana Land guy forever. I'm not watching one more pitch. I'm not part of it. No, we're Indianapolis Clons. I like the Clons. Big bananas guy, though. I mean, I like the Indianapolis Clowns. Clowns got Jack Bradley Jr. I'm a clown for sure. Yeah, I don't know if they have every game. JBJ. I was a former banana, too. It's embarrassing. The song was great, though. Oh, you struck out. No, I got a time violation. So I looked back at the umpire and stepped out of the box, and I'm like, and he called a strike on me.

1:48:11I'm like, come on, buddy. How are you going to call a strike on me? Trying to put on a show here for the fans. I almost took out a lamp there. Trying to put on a show for the fans. He gave me a time violation. So I did pitch the next inning, and it went great. Shutdown. Got the save.

1:48:24Pat McAfee:Okay, that's a big deal. Because I was about to say, you're not welcome everyone to show again. Riley Green got on base, didn't he? Yeah. He's probably too busy doing backflips. 1:53:31Pat McAfee:Okay, I like that you're just saying things now. Now, John Gordon says if you say stuff publicly, it's more likely to happen. So I appreciate your optimism and positivity. I got a chance to meet LaFleur. I appreciated his energy. He also told me there's a brand-new practice facility being built out there for the Arizona Cardinals. I think like$300 million or something like that. I forget the amount of money. So it does feel like the cheap-ass Cardinals kind of brand might be changing. Is that how you feel? Should we be a little bit more optimistic about the Cardinals than we have been in the past?

1:54:00Pat McAfee:because we just watched them battle with Jacoby in contract negotiations. Obviously, Carson Beck started tonight. We have respect for him. But they've been a laughingstock for a while, it feels like, out there. And we don't like that because we love the city. How should we feel about the future? Does it feel like we're going in the right direction right now? I think so. Listen, anytime you make an investment in a head coach and a new football facility, obviously they want to get things going in the right direction. Coach LaFleur, I'm excited to see what he brings. He comes from Shanahan. He comes from McVay.

1:54:26Two different styles, obviously. Shanahan's more wide zone. Obviously, McVay's gone more to that downhill running scheme as of recent. I'm excited to see what offense he deploys, obviously, moving forward. But I think whenever you look at what Michael Bidwell invested in this new facility, I think it's only trending in the right direction. They've got a ton of skill guys. They've paid all the right guys. Now they've just got to keep getting better and better one piece at a time.

1:54:50Pat McAfee:Hall of Fame games tonight. The NFL season officially starts in Canton, Ohio. A.Q. Shipley will be on the call for the Arizona Cardinals. And that's why we appreciate it, and I think we should make the announcement.

1:55:52Pat McAfee:AQ Shipley will be back in a Thunderdome all season long. Yay! AQ! We're excited about that. We're thankful. We didn't know if we were going to be able to get the deal done with AQ after he was voted the number two booth in the NFL. It was a good negotiation at Connor's wedding. Got him pretty boozed up. Started chatting with him a little bit. Obviously, he saw a fantastic wife. We've seen his family grow into such a beautiful one out there in Arizona. And AQ, what you do every week for us is great. You spotlight the big boys from around the league. I think the offensive linemen around the league appreciate it.

1:56:25Pat McAfee:We certainly do because we feel like we get smarter. And getting a chance to be around you once a week is certainly an experience. So we are very, very thankful for you, brother. And we can't wait for another great season. Grateful for you guys. I am excited to get going again, obviously. Tonight, I get to look at Monroe Freeling. We talked a little bit about him during draft night, right, from Georgia. You had Dan Morgan on talking about him. I'm excited to see all the new young guys. Chase Bissonette was an early second-round pick of the Cardinals. Excited to see two young linemen, see if they got what it takes moving forward tonight.

1:56:56Pat McAfee:Thank you. Have you heard what we're team riding on this evening? And we're telling everybody on earth, hey, you should not be gambling on Hall of Fame. Yeah, it's low units. It's a small amount. Low units means not a lot of money here. We're going low. We're not betting a lot of money. It's the Hall of Fame game, okay? This is going to be shit football, okay? After the first two drives, we're all going to say, oh, yeah, we got to get through all this. But we're going to be pumped. But it's still football. Yeah, it's still football. So we are still going to be appreciative of it, but it's not going to be good.

1:57:25Pat McAfee:80 combined quarterback rush yards and total points in the game. It's minus 165. This is not a reach or a stretch, but we are certainly team riding alongside of this. You talked about wanting to see a couple of the offensive linemen. This type of game feels like there's going to be quarterbacks running for their lives. Is that how we should view this, AQ, and why is that? Are some of these offensive linemen just absolutely terrible? Do they not know what to do? Are the wide receivers confused on what to do? Why do you think there is normally a bit of chaos us in these particular games? Well, listen, it's the first time playing live football.

1:57:54I think that's the biggest thing that people got to realize. It's the first time playing live football. Practice is practice, but under the lights, the nerves, all of the expectations, a lot of these young guys, hey, this is their moment that they're going to realize, hey, I'm playing in an NFL game. It is a preseason game. We obviously know that, but it is still an NFL football game on NBC. I mean, it is live football again. And when you get that, you're going to have mistakes. And pass protection is in my opinion is the heart it's much harder than run game so whenever you get into pass protection and live situations and all the different things are coming at you there's going to be missed blocks the good news is we got kenny pickett we got carson beck we got haynes king right if minshu gets some time these guys are all running quarterbacks all you got to do is make one guy miss and you're going to get a big pickup on a scramble haynes king could potentially

1:58:40Pat McAfee:go for 70 80 yards i mean he breaks through and you said uh is minshu gonna is carson starting over Minshew? Is that what's happening? I'm assuming that Minshew's not going to play, but I know they announced Carson Beck, but if he does get, he can run. So, the point being is all of these quarterbacks in the game tonight have an opportunity to run. And you know what? Larry Fitzgerald can, too. Yeah. If he gets in tonight, he can run. Take his nap. I don't know if he can still run. He looks about as big as me these days, old Larry. Oh, what the hell? It's going in the whole thing. Show some respect.

1:59:16Pat McAfee:He's the best. He's the best. AQ's saying, listen, I'm wondering if his jacket still fits for whenever they fit him for this whole thing, is what AQ just said. You staying all weekend, Kish? And what we would like to let Larry know, we are so thankful and appreciative of what he did for Ball, and we also respect the shit out of him enjoying his life. I mean, that guy was training like a track guy every single day of his life for, what, 12, 13 years, whatever it was, out there in Arizona, getting to enjoy his life right now and also get his flowers. I love everything about that. Now, to Tone's question, you're going to be out there all weekend for Larry, and how does it kind of look for you all weekend?

1:59:54Yeah, I am. So calling the game today. Then, obviously, I think there's a dinner and ceremonial dinner tomorrow. And then, obviously, the induction is Saturday. The ceremonies and all the parties that night, I'm going to Vinatieri's party. I'm going to go to Fitz's deal. Yeah, so sticking around all day. And then we've got a charter flight going back Sunday back to Arizona.

2:00:12Pat McAfee:Wow. I think, you know, from my understanding of the way these parties go, you can kind of mosey, you know, to a couple. I can't wait for Vinatieri's party. I'm so excited to celebrate Vinatieri this weekend. I'm very, very pumped for that. Long day. It's going to be a long day for all parties, you know, for all parties. But I've heard the party situation at night is a good time. Really? Yeah. Word on the street is the Panthers are throwing a freaking bash, dude. Well, the Carolina Panthers, I mean, that's a good point you're making. I guess Cardinals the same here. Yeah. You know, you don't know how often that's going to be happening for your organization.

2:00:46Pat McAfee:You know, there's some organizations that obviously have a lot more Hall of Famers than others. It's like Tepper, I would assume, with Luke Kuechly going in, I assume Tepper is going to go hard for Luke Kuechly going into the Hall of Fame. So that would mean, I assume, the party afterwards, I assume all the celebration is going to be gigantic. It's just like Vinatieri. Carly Irsay, this is the first time she's been asked to do this, and she's obviously seen her dad do it. And I assume that they are going to – not only the Patriots, obviously, helping with that old thing, I think. I don't know how that old goes.

2:01:15Pat McAfee:Yeah, I don't know. I'm not sure if they're doing anything. They should. I mean, they did pretty good for you guys. But, I mean, I don't know how that old thing goes. But I assume his is going to be awesome. It's almost like the investment of the organizations in their alumni is kind of on display at these. And I hope there's a nice ice sculpture. That would be a good time. A shot luge? Oh, shot luge. Yeah. AQ, you do a shot luge this weekend at the Hall of Fame thing? Are you going to do it with me? No, no, I don't do it. You're going to be there? I'll be there. You don't drink anymore? No, I do drink.

2:01:49Pat McAfee:I don't do that. I don't do that whole thing. He told me all he does is if it's shaped like dongs. Who said that? AQ? Yeah. Okay, I was going to say, I did not say. I do remember saying. Jesus Christ. Master Sculptor. I don't understand what just happened. Is it a hand one? They pour it through the shaft. Yeah. And then up for that. It comes through the pee hole.

2:02:10balls yep yeah yeah like a crazy yeah right starts with a chainsaw and then just rum chata that's all that come on are you doing that this weekend no i'm not doing that i don't think i'm doing that

2:02:27Pat McAfee:it'd be a fun are you drinking still or do you don't drink anymore I drink. I just, I mean, here's the problem with me whenever I drink. It's not that, like, I make bad decisions in life. I make bad decisions with food. So if I start to drink, then I go home and there's ultimately going to be a Taco Bell order. Then there's going to be ice cream. Then there's going to be cookies. Then there's going to be a D-Bone. Every once in a while, you can do that, AQ. Yeah, absolutely. Every once in a while. Agree. Yeah, D-Bone's doing that every day. Yeah, last night, just for fun, right? No, last night, see, we had one of those nights.

2:03:03Pat McAfee:It was a long night last night. Wrapped up the album last night in Nashville. So, had a good late night. Late night. Congrats. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I'm very excited about it. Late night in Nashville, though, wrapping it all up. We're lucky to do that. On the way out, Duckman, Riley Green, invited us over for a little bit of food. That food would inevitably come about, I don't know, four hours later. Sure. For that one he said, but he was incredibly gracious. got us some ice cream, and D-Bow was like, oh, banana pudding ice cream. I like this. Okay? And then Oreo ice cream. Oh, yeah.

2:03:37Pat McAfee:I like this. A couple of those. And all of a sudden, two large pizzas show up. Those are my ultimate. What are you guys having? Pepperoni. I know that one. With jalapeno peppers, extra cheese. I mean, it was two of them. There's four of us. Phenomenal pie. Unbelievable. Riley really dialed it up, I would say, especially for how late it was whenever we get. He eats pizza? We get out. Say, no. It was incredible watching his discipline. He said, I already ate. It's for you guys. You know, he did his whole shit. Of course. Yeah, but he is obviously absolutely shredded. Yeah, he gave me pizza. But we had been, you know, potentially working for the last six hours straight in a studio or whatever.

2:04:12Pat McAfee:So we get out of there. We're looking for food. Everything's kind of closed. He said, I got you guys. We get there. You know, obviously we do the whole song and dance on getting the food there. But once it gets there, this guy had jalapeno peppers for the first time in his life last night. Because Riley Green offered him a pizza with jalapeno peppers, wasn't it? It was spicy, but it was good. his nose while he was eating it, or did he just eat it like normal? He did do an icky, but he was away from Riley. He didn't want Riley to see that, but he had four or five slices, I would say. And then there was some thick, luscious chicken dinners.

2:04:40Yeah, he was raving about them this morning.

2:04:43Pat McAfee:Throw those in the pocket. I mean, that's a 10-pound night. That's an easy 10-pound night. What people don't realize that about big guys, like, you guys have a night, and it's like, oh, okay, cool, three pounds. AJ has a night, like, it runs right through him because he eats healthy all the time. That's quick three pounds, whatever, and then he's back on the wagon. Weight comes right back off. D-Bone and I, if we do that on a weekend, that's a 25-pound weekend. Easy. D-Bone does it every day. That's not the weekend, bro. That's why he's 350 right now. 350? Come on. 370? He can't be 350. I'm telling you, Bone looks like he could, I mean, maybe D-tackle right now.

2:05:19Nose.

2:05:19Pat McAfee:Nose. Nose. He looks like he's trying to have the best season yet. He's not over 300. Yeah. Are you kidding me? We have to take him down to the local food pantry to weigh him. Just got a text from Coach Pagano. The truck stops. Jeez. We don't think that's true, by the way. I don't think that's true. We're not there yet. Bone knows. A lot of people last night were telling Bone, like, how old are you? And he was like 26. And they're like, jeez. What? No, they were telling him it's happening. He doesn't know it. It's happening, though. Like, his body is changing in how it handles. Did you say you had to call the Urses to get that plane that they were going to use for Takete for him to travel with us?

2:06:02Pat McAfee:I mean, Lolita was potentially an option to get us over to Nashville last night, but it wasn't necessary. And we're still trying to figure out if this is going to help us bullying him. If this, like, kind of empowers him. Yeah, so, like, we're figuring it out. I'm fat anyway. I guess I'll just have McDonald's every night.

2:06:25Pat McAfee:I would say the pizza was unbelievable. Trying to help. Is it going to go the other way? Yeah, we are. It seemingly has, which is a part of the issue. It's like, Diba, if not us, then who? Let's start at least looking ahead at some, just a little tiny bit. Wedding celebrations next weekend. After that is when we have to. See, that would be normally when people are trying to get into, like, best shape. Yeah, I'm talking. Bones, like, absolutely not. i want to enjoy this entire six month lead up here yeah you know this entire thing so if not us then who bone we love you buddy but you're 26 and your body is going to change and it has been and i think you just need to adjust i was 280 pounds at one point i mean i was a fat so you know as life was going there you just kind of got to lock in a little bit and also you're not getting tested for anything yeah i should think about this science is okay yeah science and go for a walk after dinner, too.

2:07:23A walk. It's a good start, you know. It's a good start.

2:07:27Pat McAfee:I don't know if the pancake batter science is going to work. He's only 26 years old. He's only 26. See, everybody needs to relax. Yes, he is a mature 20. I'm just saying he has time. He has plenty of time to figure things out. It's what we're telling him. It gets a lot harder when you turn 40, AJ. You know that. I turned 40 this summer. Expecting some showers, eh, Kish? I saw the forecast. I saw the forecast. Can I say something? Because I listened to Chuck yesterday. Can I say something? There's not a single football player in this world that is looking forward to joint practices. Not a single. Not a single one. What did he say? I just got to be honest. He said players are getting a little bored with training camp, and, you know, they're looking forward to getting all players and coaches are looking forward to joint practice.

2:08:46I'm telling you what, there's not one thing I hated more than joint practices. There was no more brother-in-law and there was no more, hey, Corey Peters. Hey, let's, long way to September, you know, let's get through this one, huh, together. Let's get through this one together. Now you got Brandon Meebane standing across from you trying to run you over every single play. No, no, no, joint practices are not fun and no players looking forward.

2:09:11Pat McAfee:Yeah, and you're a guy that would have to be in every single rep. You know, you were actually, even if you were a starter, yeah, AQ's in there.
