In short
Week 1 college football recap (Ole Miss over Louisville; Wisconsin vs Notre Dame; LSU’s delayed win over Clemson), plus NFL season preview and roster/injury/discipline updates, and a brief women’s basketball/Team USA recap. The hosts debate whether early results signal true championship contenders (especially LSU and Notre Dame) or just Week 1 variance (Clemson, Wisconsin first-half struggles). They also discuss gambling spreads from DraftKings and a controversial Big Ten clock ruling in Michigan vs Western Michigan.
Guests (and backgrounds)
- Adam Schefter: ESPN senior NFL insider; longtime NFL reporter with strong league access; Michigan ties mentioned.
- Reese Davis: ESPN college football/NFL analyst and host (appears for “Reese’s Pieces” weekend takeaways).
- Rece Davis, Dan Orlovsky, Darius Butler, AJ Hawk: referenced as part of the episode’s guest lineup (football analysts/insiders; specific backgrounds not detailed in the provided transcript beyond their roles as football voices).
Key claims
- LSU looks like a championship contender immediately, with Sam Levitt’s running (100+ yards in the first half) and Lane Kiffin’s offense using “video game” pre-snap/coverage-beating concepts.
- Notre Dame’s slow start vs Wisconsin is framed as “figuring it out,” then finishing strongly with a special-teams turnover and DJ McKinney’s pick-six.
- Clemson’s Week 1 performance raises questions about QB/starting decisions and whether it was a “buzzsaw” opponent or real decline.
- Big Ten’s Michigan clock controversy involved adding a second after the TV clock appeared at zero; Schefter argues it changed the outcome and that the “secret tenths” explanation came later.
- In the NFL, Puka Nacua is expected to play and is not on the commissioner’s exempt list, implying no discipline right now; Christian Gonzalez contract talks are “nowhere.”
Notable examples
Ole Miss-Loulliville thriller; Wisconsin-Notre Dame second-half turnaround; LSU-Clemson delayed game in Baton Rouge; Iowa’s 40-0 start (Tony Diaz receiver + strong offensive line); Michigan-Western Michigan clock ruling; NFL opener: Patriots-Seahawks; Rams-49ers in Australia; Falcons QB situation (Tua starting; Penix not even backup this week).

Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:00Pat McAfee:Hello beautiful people and welcome to our humble abode, the DraftKings Thunderdome. On this Overeaction Monday, September 7, 2026, this sports program begins now. Football! It's spectacular, isn't it? I mean, what old weekend. Week one of college football kicked off in a massive way. Had an absolute thriller last night as Ole Miss gets by a huge win over Louisville. And then, don't look now, Wisconsin didn't look ass against Notre Dame in the first half until they turned it on. Then Saturday night, obviously, LSU played late, late into the night as weather continued to delay all damn day. After a college game day, lightning delay.
0:42Pat McAfee:The game kicks off at 840, 940 local, 1040 Eastern. That thing goes late into the night. And I don't think LSU would have ever been stopped if that game goes until 3, 4 a.m. against that Clemson team. No pros, no problem. for Lane Kiffin. Now, this makes you wonder about all of the jousting and public fighting and the ridicule and seemingly conjecture that was taking place about Lane Kiffin and his LSU tenure whenever you watch them just absolutely dismantle the Clemson Tigers. Now, this was the first year that Clemson was not in the top 25 in the AP poll before the season started in a long time.
1:18Pat McAfee:So maybe a lot of people knew that this was coming, but just an absolute romping of a team in opening weekend of a whole new era. You're dunking on a sideline. You got reality TV stars and influencers walking in with the team. You have the eyes of the entire college football world looking at injunctions in your courthouse. And then you just go on the field and pound a team. Just absolutely demolish them and showcase that you're bigger, stronger, faster than probably everybody you're going to play against. Sam Levitt, the quarterback, when he was at Arizona State, he could run. He could run, run.
1:50Pat McAfee:And now he's all the way back after a Liz Frank injury took him out last year. He's running all over the damn yard. He's got weapons all over the place. And this LSU team, I think they want to kill people. They have really bought into the fact that they are the villains. They have really bought into, oh, everybody hates us. Everybody hates us. Not just the team and obviously the coach, the entire fan base. The entire fan base loves that it was like that. Now, they all got out of there pretty quickly, okay, whenever that game started getting a little bit out of control. It was a long day down there in Baton Rouge.
2:18Pat McAfee:I think Lane understood. I think the team understood. And I think everybody that watched that game live or on TV says, wait, is LSU potentially going to make a run at this title? Is this the reason why Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss? Is he go Donner so they can get more speed, more size, more physicality than maybe anybody else? And he brings his offensive coordinator in from Ole Miss, who's an absolute wizard who has a green dot, who can tell Sam Levitt, who has already made it to the college football playoff with Arizona State, you can tell Sam Levitt in his head that, hey, they got a cover too right now.
2:46Pat McAfee:Look to your right. Second, boom, he's just looking to his right. They're playing video game stuff down there. That's what Lane Kiffin and his offense has the capability of doing, especially if they have the weapons. He looked, they looked unbelievable. They're not the only ones, though. There was great performances across the board. There were some ass performances across the board, and college football kicked off in a huge way. What a wonderful time. We've got an NFL game Wednesday night. Yes! There we go. Patriots Seahawks kick off the NFL season on Wednesday night. I cannot wait to see what these teams look like after an offseason for the Seattle Seahawks that has been documented on hard knocks.
3:17Pat McAfee:It has been phenomenal to learn about this team. McDonald, the head coach there, young defensive guru. Obviously, he gets hired as the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. What's he going to do? All the offensive geniuses have been hired as head coaches. Now a young defensive genius gets hired as a head coach. Is this guy going to know game management? Because normally that's the offensive side of the ball. Is he going to be able to talk to the whole team? Is he going to be able to keep up on the offensive side? Because you're going to have to lose offense coordinators if you have any success over there.
3:40Pat McAfee:He's had to manage all of that here in the first couple years of him being a head coach. And he won a Super Bowl. So I think the Seattle Seahawks are well on their way in this McDonald era to potentially be the next dynasty. of the NFL. And on the other side, speaking of dynasty, the greatest dynasty in the history of sports, the New England Patriots have a brand new package of that. It's all around Drake May, who was second place for MVP last year. Yeah, I should have been first, but yes. Well, there's some things coming out now with some voters saying some things and doing some things. Certainly, it looks like that.
4:06Pat McAfee:They've added weapons. This is a great way to kick off this NFL season after a spectacular college football week one. Football is dominant, and we're very lucky for that. You know who else is dominant? What's that? Team USA Women's National League. Okay. Basketball. 32 consecutive FIBA World Cup wins. We were in a close one with Grazzi. I mean, the Italian ladies were putting us through some hell. Felt like all USA couldn't make it. Everybody in the United States of America that was potentially going to be on that team, I think yesterday was the day couldn't make a shot. It was a real barn burner with Italy.
4:39Pat McAfee:We sneaked by. I think it was a nice wake-up call. Chelsea Gray down the stretch wanted the ball. Give me the ball. Give me the ball. Boom. Bang. Beast do. A lot of action. They went to the old guard down the stretch there. All the youngs basically off the court. Aaliyah Boston was really the only new timer to FIBA World Cup, and she's obviously one of the highest-paid players in WNBA, been around a long time. Kaitlin Clark couldn't make a shot. She's on the sideline. Paige is on the sideline. They went to the old guard out there, and we got a big-time win over Italy. This is happening. USA's about to win another title over the rest of the world.
5:12Pat McAfee:We definitely need to celebrate that. Now, let's go to the Talks of the Table at Boston Conner and at Ty Schmidt. 40-0 for Iowa. How you doing? Keep it moving. What a start for the Big Ten and for the Hawkeyes. And welcome back. We missed you, brother. Thank you very much. Yeah, great weekend. Great weekend. You know, you never know. There's a lot of question marks in the air every time you go into a new college football season. And listen, I'm not going to act like Northern Illinois is the best team in the world, but when you have an ass beating like that and you dominate in all three phases of the game, which Iowa typically dominates in two phases of the game, not so much three, but boy, I'll tell you what, you know, it's the start of the year.
5:46I'm starting to feel like, hey, this might be the year the Hawks break through and make it to the college football playoff.
5:51Pat McAfee:Okay, because we were talking about Iowa on college game day, and I couldn't remember that man right there, Tony Diaz's name, in real time. I apologize, came from a smaller school. But we were watching highlights all spring and also through training camp of Iowa throwing the football and completing it. That has not happened. First off season ever. Iowa's been a big-time rugby football team for a long time. and this Diaz guy, we're doing body control in spring training and training camp. We're watching him make some real plays. It's like, is this what the team's going to look like whenever push comes to shove?
6:22Pat McAfee:And they did, I think. Did it not look like that, Ty? What are you shaking your head for? So, I mean, yeah, he's unbelievable. He's arguably the most talented receiver Iowa's had in a long, long time. But I personally believe Iowa has a top five, if not the best offensive line in the country. Kamari Moulton had 132 rushing yards in, you know, eight minutes of game time. So they're going to pound the rock. they basically just need a quarterback who's not going to turn the ball over. But when you have a guy like that who you can confidently throw it to on third and long, yeah, it's going to look a little bit different for Iowa.
6:52Pat McAfee:Maybe the Iowa Hawkeyes do pick up those big explosives that you need to continue to compete against the big-time teams. Now, that's a whole other conversation whenever you look at, like, LSU. Now, LSU team, on paper, when you just look at size, dims, speed, everything, it's like, is there going to be a team that's more talented than them? Then they're able to piece it together. Now, how deep are they? This is the big thing. This is like when you're constructing your roster. How deep can you become whenever you have a lot of high-end type of talent? Now, granted, we know there's no salary cap in college football.
7:22Pat McAfee:We understand they can spend and will spend whatever down there for Lane Kiffin and his LSU team to get back to the national championship. Will they be able to withstand an entire season like this? Because if they are good for college football, the villains, which they have bought into, are showing up with some of the most explosion that they have. They're not the only ones, though. Julian Sane went crazy. Arch Manning went crazy. Let's go to one half of the hammer. Dad! Cowboys, AP Tone. Big spreads this weekend for college football. What did the slate kind of tell us whenever we should maybe look ahead for gambling down the stretch with the best sportsbook on earth, DraftKings?
7:54Pat McAfee:If you're of age and agree to gamble or trade responsibly and not like an asshole, we'd love for you to join us on DraftKings, available in all 50 states. What did the slate tell us about going ahead here, Tone?
8:05Darius Butler:Yeah, I mean, there was a lot of huge spreads this weekend. A lot of these FBS top 10 teams playing lesser teams with 40, 50-point spread. You talked about Texas, Ohio State, IU, all those teams' situations. So it's kind of hard. It's hard to take away in situations like that. Like Julian saying in the first drive missed a couple throws, but then after that, sorry, excuse me, was unbelievable. Same with Indiana. You're getting choked up? Me too. I was. Yeah. That's 90-year NFL bet Darius K. Butler.
8:31Pat McAfee:Dude, I almost had a tear in my eye in that pregame show. I was very lucky and thankful to do that pregame show alongside Dez, Joey, Reese, right on the sideline. And I, like, looked around. At one point, it was live on air. I obviously didn't have a mute button, so I was pretty apologetic afterwards. But I just looked around. I saw, like, 102 ,000 people that have kind of waited the entire day out. And I was like, man, this is beautiful. Like, this is what life is supposed to be. I got emotional, just like you are here while you're talking about these spreads.
8:58Darius Butler:Yeah, but so, like, it's like, what can you take away from week one? because this is a preseason game for a lot of those top 10 teams. They're just kind of feeling it out. They're playing base coverages, stuff like that, running vanilla stuff on offense, trying to figure out what their guys are in situations like that. Even Oregon and Boise was a super close game, but Oregon outgamed them by 250 yards. What do you take away from those situations? I think you just want to see these teams be crisp and clean, and there was a lot of that this weekend from a lot of the top teams. There was a lot of teams that you kind of have questions about now moving forward, or was it just a week one thing?
9:28Darius Butler:So don't take – it's hard not to take too much from there. Like Notre Dame last night, everyone's like, oh, this team sucks in the first half. And then, you know, they kind of settle in and they win by 30 or whatever. They cover the spread in that situation. So it's kind of hard. What do you take away from week one is kind of the question for me from this week.
9:43Pat McAfee:Yeah, if you fell asleep during the Wisconsin-Notre Dame game, you probably think Notre Dame asked. But maybe they just had a half where they had to figure it out and the second half is who they are. And then on you think about – I mean, it's hard not to, but like Clemson. Is this what Clemson actually is or did they just run into an actual buzzsaw? in the first week because they always talk about week one to week two being the biggest development of your team. I think we learn a lot more next weekend than we did this past weekend, but you have to get off to a hot start, D-Bud.
10:08Adam Schefter:Yeah, you want to. Tony just mentioned it. With no preseason in college football, you do have to really find out a lot of things when the real bullets are firing. So a lot of teams, we know all the movement that happens in the offseason, but coaches, coordinators, all the transfer portal guys. So a team like LSU coming out, like, yeah, you have the talent, you have the coaching staff, but actually putting it together and showing up and putting belt to ass on the national stage is impressive. And then the teams that you have the question about, it's like do they figure it out going down the line?
10:35Adam Schefter:A team like Clemson, you waited until, you know, the 11th hour to name a starter and then you changed the quarterback at halftime. So there's still questions there. And then change back. Exactly. So there's still questions there with Dabo. And that's a team that it's not like, you know, FBS schools playing against these lower – this is a big-time college program with big-time college recruits year in and year out. So what will they be going down the stretch? But, yeah, just having ball back was electric. That environment was electric. Game day, Ben, back. You guys, I think, did a great job. Obviously, threw all the shit with the weather.
11:06Adam Schefter:So I'm just glad we're back, man.
11:07Pat McAfee:That was LSU officials and ESPN safety saying that there was lightning within eight miles and away it was going, that we had to go inside. And with eyes that I have, I did not like that because I didn't see, you know, it didn't appear as if we were in danger. But obviously, people that are much smarter than us in this field, I grew up in Donato's town, though, so I don't know. You tell me, but they were looking out for us, which we're very grateful. Shout to the LSU fans because we told them multiple times, even during break as we were heading in there, like, hey, we're being told to be safe. Like, you guys obviously can do and should do whatever the hell you need to.
11:42Pat McAfee:Yeah, right. They sat that thing out. They didn't even leave. They didn't move. They sat there. We go back out there. They're alive yet again. It was so cool to be back. It was a lot of fun. Obviously, week one of the season, so there's new stuff. Obviously, it's getting rolled out and trying. But I think everybody did an incredible job. We got a Hall of Fans now. Shout out to Ole Grimson getting in there. It could be you. You show up and do something awesome. You get to the Hall of Fans. Shout out to Master Sergeant Cliff and his wife, Jennifer Vellucci, who traveled all last year. They made another appearance.
12:11Pat McAfee:Are they going to do that again? We shall say. And Bruce missed$2 million kicks. It looked like he was going to throw it. Shout out to Home Depot, by the way. Yeah. Yeah, they matched it. That's incredible news. I wonder if they knew of week one. Okay, we're going to do a – Probably not. Let's get it. Here we go. I just thought, because a lot of people have said, like, that's not, like, my money. That's not your money you're doing. It's like, what company do you think is just going to let me go out there and say, hey, a million bucks if this random kid we've never met before makes a kick, we're going to give that to him.
12:38Pat McAfee:It's like no company's ever going to do that. And then give him a bunch more chances if he misses. Yeah, exactly. No company's ever going to actually do that, especially, you know, like we'll do a$5 ,000 kick. Like a$2 ,500 kick I think is pretty good. It's like, nah, the pressure of the money is what makes kicking, you know, kind of kicking. So we've got to add that added element. so no company is just going to be open like yeah blank check buddy every single week whatever you want to do and i think that's what makes it is that we got to put the pressure on this it's got to be life-changing forever like can you make the kick in that particular moment so home depot coming in saying hey we understand we like it and uh we'll match whatever you put in there it's like thank you like that is so incredibly kind of you to do there's gonna be a lot of people that are going to benefit from that we're obviously going to get into charity stuff as we continue to go but i thought he was going to make a million dollar kick to start off the season will next week be a million dollar kick probably not can't have that be every week no right It was starting the season.
13:27Pat McAfee:It was starting the season there. Okay, let's pivot away from college. We'll come back to it with Reese Davis here in about 25, 30 minutes on his big takeaways. We're going to call that the Reese's Pieces. Love it. We're going to have a weekend. Excited to talk to him. Joining us now, senior NFL insider from ESPN, a Michigan man. Hmm.
13:46Darius Butler:Interesting. Ladies and gentlemen, Adam Schefter.
13:48Pat McAfee:Schefter. Hey, Schefter. Just so we can all be on the same page here, How many seconds in a minute? I'll say this. First of all, there can't be too many people who were at the game in 1994 when Michael Westbrook caught that pass from a coordinator Stewart. I was there, and I was at the game Saturday night. Now, I left a little bit early. I didn't see – I wasn't there in the stadium. You left when the game ended. Yeah, okay. That's what you're saying. You left when the game ended, when Western Michigan was celebrating the win and when clock hit zero. Hey, when this clock hits zero, we're all going to look up and see what was – we need one plate at a time.
14:23Pat McAfee:don't look up do your job when that scoreboard hits zeros we will see where it all falls and it turns out from my understanding adam you actually might know more about this because of your uh relationships and obviously michigan being involved and i think there's a lot of michigan people that are necessarily like ah i mean we will certainly take the win going forward but we don't know how that way just as football fans in general i think a lot of us are learning about a secret clock in real time do you know anything about this chef d and what are your thoughts as somebody that's watched a lot of football we all have going yeah right like this game was certainly over big tens obviously come out transparent they said we have this clock and match up with this if there was tens of seconds it would still have one second on but since it doesn't it's at zero that was released later so there's already a massive onslaught of yeah right i've watched football my whole life that thing was at zero bro this is obviously a work for the big ten what are your thoughts on it i know you're very close to the process but just how it's kind of all unfolded and the information you might have that we do not have you know my father was watching the game and he shut the game off after that play i went to bed and told my mother in the morning that musk had lost and i said no no no they did not lose they won he's like they won so he had no idea after that play that seemingly was the end of the game right there we were watching it i'll just say this i guess they have to sync the clocks but we're going by the tv clock the TV clock.
15:48And based on the TV clock, that game looked over to me. I mean, it just did. Even as a Michigan fan, I thought the game was over. Somehow they found a second. I don't know how they did it. I was not in charge of it. It was a very strange ruling to me. But they put a, not me, the officials, the Big Ten, whoever it was, they put a second back on the clock. And it results in that play. And it was a big win for Michigan, which did not play well at all. and it was a terrible loss for Western Michigan, which came into the big house and played a great game. Those guys played really hard, and they played well enough to win the game and probably should have won the game.
16:25I don't know where the second came from. And the great part was I was watching my two kids, and my daughter was like, you know, what people forget is two plays back, two plays back that there were eight seconds left. And I said to my son and daughter, Tom, like, whoa, whoa, he ran out of bounds. there were nine seconds left, and they put a second back on the clock two plays earlier. So they added the one second that came into dispute on the play in the back of the end zone right there, and then that led to the Hail Mary at the end of the game. So nobody's talked about the play from two plays ago where they added another second that became the second that became the difference in the game.
17:05Pat McAfee:Yeah, so this is the video that the Big Ten was putting out behind the scenes that, hey, hey, we have tenths of seconds on our clocks and how ours are running all the way down to exactly zero. And there was a showing of this, I believe, on one of the side challenge cameras that was trying to show a bunch of the Michigan fans as well about how it got there, and there's like a video of that. But I don't think any of us who have ever watched football for our entire lives knew that there was some secret tenths of second clock somewhere else because you keep talking about the TV camera, TV camera, or TV clock, TV clock.
17:33Pat McAfee:That used to be an actual just shot on the clock. That's what it used to be before it was even like digitalized and everything like that. They used to have the clock be the stadium clock. And the refs always say, can you please put blank back up there? So I think every time they talk about the clock being an official timer of the game, since I've watched football, the one that is on the stands in there, I just think it makes us all very hard to believe that there's some secret one behind the scenes. But that's what Big Ten's saying. Big Ten didn't come out and say that though publicly until it was already gone that they're the most crooked and corrupt organization of all time.
18:05Pat McAfee:That is the conversation that was happening. I'm like, those are some very heavy accusations and allegations. I don't know if everybody should be as loud as they're being with this. There might be some repercussions, potentially. You're saying those into microphones. But I think we all got pretty worked up about how this seems like a big work here. This seems like Western Michigan got absolutely jobbed in Michigan, in the Big Ten. And then this comes out later. And then also Western Michigan came out and said, we agree. Because they explained him. And then people were like, they were told, shut up.
18:31Pat McAfee:You're getting paid a million and a half. It was like it was never going to get enough information or evidence after the onslaught already happened. But now I guess we know that at least the Big Ten has this. We don't know who else has these types of things happening behind the scenes. Does the NFL have one of these? Because we saw some of the NFL guys come out and go, yeah, but the clock and the clock on TV and us are always kind of working to be in the same time because they operate.
18:54Adam Schefter:It's just – Only time we do see it in the NFL is with the delayed game calls. It seems like they're always a little lenient towards the offense to the quarterback. Us as viewers, even as players on the field, we'll see the triple zero come up with a double zero in the back of the end zone. And they kind of wait that beat until they blow the whistle for the delayed game. So that's the only kind of time I can remember refs kind of having their own clock that we don't see. But yeah, this was insane. Yeah, I think we're all feeling the same way. Okay, we all feel the same way. Yeah, big time rated.

19:22That's how most of us feel.
19:23Adam Schefter:Would you have rushed to field, Schefter, if you were still there and leaving? No. No, I was, again, I go back to 1994. I had to be standing on the Michigan sideline when Cordell threw that pass to Michael Westbrook. I was right there. If you go back to the front page of the Rocky Mountain News, the next day there was Michael Westbrook and Cordell hugging, and I'm right in the background, like completely stunned and flabbergasted that my school just got beat by CU.
19:47Pat McAfee:I like that you're bewildered out there about what happened in front of your face. That's a wonderful, here it is. Yeah, I was rooting for that game. The Broncos were playing in Buffalo on Monday night. I had to go to Buffalo, so I stopped in Ann Arbor to take in that game and write about it for Rocky Mountain News. He launches that rocket right there. Go back to that, please. Hold on, this is not being talked about enough, Schefter. He was on a 27-yard line. It was Cordell Stewart. He'd go on to be slash. He was a punt returner, wide receiver. I think he played corner at some point and quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
20:20A 75-yard throw almost. Oh, my gosh. Holy shit. I never seen this. Oh, my God. I didn't know that.
20:28Pat McAfee:Me neither. Hey, Cordell, appreciate everything you did for this. He punted for us, too, in Pittsburgh as a Steeler. I mean, he played every position. I didn't know he could 73-yard that thing at the end of the game. I mean, that is outrageous. Good for him. And what a win. This is obviously an iconic play that we need to revisit a little bit more often and put some respect on Slash here. Cordell Stewart. Okay, let's move along. Western Michigan, we all feel the same way, bro. We're all on your side. We have no idea how to fix it unless they start putting the tens of seconds clocks up publicly on TV.
20:59Pat McAfee:Hopefully that'll be able to clarify things. But everybody on earth thinks that the Big Ten cooked that for Michigan. Yeah, they got screwed. That's how everybody feels. Even Michigan people. I mean, the amount of Michigan people that are texting me about how ass their team is and how they lost away from Michigan and how this isn't worse than App State, but this isn't a good start to an entire era of anything. Okay, let's move to football now, our NFL football. Wednesday, Patriots Seahawks kicks off. And then obviously Rams and Niners down there in Australia. We are just a few days away from NFL season kicking off.
21:31Pat McAfee:We know Roger Goodell got an extension. Congrats to him. Way to go, Kameis. But there's also some news about some of the players. Puka will be playing, even though there's a lot going on. How is the exemption list in play here? Is it not in play? How do you see these types of things kind of unfolding over the next couple weeks? I think there's a real possibility that Puka is going to go through the season unscathed. and not face any discipline for his part in that off-the-field incident with that woman where he was accused of allegedly, I guess, fighting her, whether he did or didn't her. Didn't do that.
22:02We'll see. But he's going to be out there on Thursday night against the 49ers. It doesn't sound like he's going to face any discipline this year right now. We'll see if anything comes of that. We're still waiting to hear about Alaric Jackson, the Rams' offensive tackle as well. But right now, look, the league placed Josh Jacobs on commissioner exempt. It placed the Broncos edge Jonathan Cooper on commissioner exempt It didn't do that with Puka It didn't do that with Alar Jackson And so it looks like those guys right now Are Clear for the time being And he'll be out there Thursday night He's played through the sickness injury That he was having during camp He'll be out there and the Rams still But they leave tomorrow They leave tomorrow for Australia Since last week Which is kind of wild How about this one?
22:49This is going to be wild for you. Ready? Okay. Raheem Morris. I have to double check this, but I'm pretty sure this is accurate. Raheem Morris turned 50 years old last Wednesday. He turned 50 the day that they were in the air, and he lost his 50th birthday due to the travel that they had to Australia. So he didn't really have much of a 50th birthday, but that's the way it goes for the opener.
23:15Pat McAfee:Yeah, and when he flies back, he already missed it as well. So I think he's 49 still. I don't really do the math. It is like a time warp when you're in that plane over there. I'm eager to see the Rams' reactions as they're in the sky and they're told they have another 16 hours left and the game is 24, 48 hours away just to see how the decision was made. But who knows who's right in this. This has never happened before in Australia, especially a legitimate game. Pumped to see it unfold and wrap up. What we do know is after it was reported by Junior. You know Junior. You know Junior? Junior reported that it would be impossible to start Tua right now.
23:51Pat McAfee:This guy. What this guy has done, I don't even know how you roll him out there. You might – Jack Strand, who's that guy? Yeah, Jack Strand. You might roll out Jack Strand over this. Tua has made it impossible to be a starter. Well, he's been named the starter. Tone has a question for you about that.
24:04Darius Butler:Yeah, Shefty, everyone's wondering, did Tua win the job or is this just a Penix was not ready from an injury standpoint because I believe it was just a week ago that he was cleared to do 11-on-11. He had been doing 7-on-7 in individuals in camp before that. So was this a win for Tua, or was this just not ready for Penix yet? I think it's a little bit of both, to be honest with you. I think Tua was better than people have let on the media. I think they were pretty happy with him. And they also know that he didn't take all the reps with all the ones the way that he would have to get them ready. They were fine with Tua.
24:37They thought he did a good job, But Penix also did not have a chance to really distinguish himself, and it took him a while to get ready, and he still has only gone through a week of practice. It's been one 11-on-11 week of practice for him, so he needs more time to get ready. And I think that Penix, at some point in time, probably sooner rather than later, will get his crack and get his turn to be the starter. But they did not feel comfortable putting him out there right now, So much so that he's not even going to be the backup this week. Cooper Rush will be the backup, and Tua will be the starter.
25:14So that's how it's going to roll this week, where Penix will be the number three. Cooper Rush will be the two. Tua is the number one, and they'd like to. He had a solid summer, but Penix just not enough time to get ready for that big danger that he suffered last year. And there you see, it'll be the sixth different starting quarterback on opening day for the Falcons in six years. the guy that struggled yeah
25:41Pat McAfee:yeah just put your hand all over the speaker yeah just put your hand just right into it put your hand is it on? no yeah I think you just if you could actually just DJ that'd be good can you hear it? can we hear you now? can you hear me now? oh no yeah drop right back in and we'll call you back we'll call you back right now we'll call you back right now I have to do it it sounds like there's a connection situation What he was going to say, though, the person that started this six different quarterback thing, Matt Ryan, he's now the president of football. So he is now running the entire show there.
26:13Pat McAfee:Brings in Stefanski straight out of Cleveland. Fired from Cleveland. It's been a cluster up there. You can now be our head coach down here in Atlanta. What's going on with Stefanski? If he was so good, what happened in Cleveland? It's like, well, he was hamstrung by the deal. You know, the$230 million guaranteed deal. He had people over his head that were doing stuff. Andrew Barry's kind of getting restarted in this thing because of everything that happened above his head. We'll give him relief. It's clear that Stefanski's going with the veteran quarterbacks here. Cooper Cush has played a lot of football.
26:42Pat McAfee:Tua Tongvaloa has played a lot of football. Michael Penix has not yet had a lot of football in him. Stefanski, how much time does he have down there? Who ends up going? How does it end up going? Certainly a fascinating dilemma. You know, the commissioner's exemption list is fascinating because they see evidence and they go, all right, yeah, yeah. And then this one, not. Do players, when I hear that, or they have not even started because maybe there isn't a trial thing, that feels like a big deal as we go forward into what matters, what doesn't matter. Puka playing, though, is a huge advantage for the Los Angeles Rams.
27:12Pat McAfee:And for me, that tells me a lot of things about potentially what's coming for Puka, but I might be looking into it the wrong way. I think he's okay. I think the NFL would probably be safer than not safer in this particular situation with where the NFL is. So that's probably, I mean, we don't know. We have not heard the exacts, but for me, if Puka starts a season like this with everything that has already happened, that's seemingly them saying something about how they feel. So if Puka's able to get through another season, I'm going to be talking about maybe offensive MVP type stuff here. Oh, yeah.
27:39Pat McAfee:With what Puka Nakua is. And that kind of gets lost up in the conversation because Aaron and Miles Garrett are on the defensive side. It's like on the offensive side, they might have the best player in football. And I know nobody really wants to think that about a wide receiver, especially a guy that isn't like a 4 '2", 6 '7", guy. But it's like Puka gets the ball, catches everything. He's impossible to tackle. They use him a lot. McVay and he love each other. They're very close, very tight. Not only as a football coach and player, but like as humans, they side-by-side seemingly threw a lot of different stuff.
28:10Pat McAfee:It's like Puka's going to go crazy on Thursday. I mean, that is just an absolute fact, it feels like.
28:15Darius Butler:Yeah, and everything you try. I believe he was second in offensive player of the year last year behind JSN. So, yeah, Puka being on the field is huge for them, especially opposite Devontae. and all those tight ends that they're going to use. Yeah, this is – him not being on the commissioner's exemplary list is ginormous for them moving forward, obviously.
28:33Pat McAfee:Yeah, I think it's huge for the Los Angeles Rams to have one of the best offensive weapons playing for them. Joining us back again, ladies and gentlemen, a man that was in a car. We don't know what happened to his speaker, but we do know his brain is still good. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm Shafter. Yeah, Shafter. Got me now? Yeah. Got me now? You sound like a little bit like last time. That's what it sounded like whenever you were talking, which we don't like because we need to hear your intel because you make ball better. Okay, as we head into, obviously, opening night, D-Butt has a question for you, Shefty.
29:00Adam Schefter:Yeah, Shefty, just looking forward to Wednesday, the injury report. You know, Nick Imerore, I know he was banged up. Travion Henderson, there's been some more reports coming out about him maybe not playing or going Wednesday. What else do you have for us Wednesday with those big-name guys potentially missing some time to start the season? Travion Henderson not at practice today again, so it's hard to imagine that he's going to play. He hasn't practiced since August 24th. I believe Barmar is not out there. We'll see if he can go. Nick Emanwari at least was out there. So it doesn't sound like he's very far away, although I still think it's a little bit ambitious to think that he'll be back this early in the season.
29:35I think early in the summer they were not counting on that at the very least. So we'll see if he can make it back up in the air at best right now. But it certainly seems like Trayvon Henderson is the one guy that we're not counting on for Wednesday night's opener in Seattle.
29:49Pat McAfee:Okay, Wednesday night opener in Seattle has one of the best corners in all of ball. Is he happy? Conman has a question for you. Yeah, Shefty, the other thing up in the air is Christian Gonzalez getting paid. Where are we at on that? It feels as though every single report I see is that Christian Gonzalez is probably not getting a deal, at least unless it's going to happen within the next couple hours. What is the situation here? Have they gotten any closer? Should I expect Christian Gonzalez to be disgruntled the entire season and not starting on Wednesday night? I hope not. Well, what I can say is that, again, these things always can change.
30:21But as of right now, talks are nowhere. And again, there always could be a last-second push. And there always could be something that changes. And we'll see how the two sides address it once the season's underway. But I think as of right now, it's hard to imagine that the two sides would be able to make up the difference to get a deal done by opening night. Again, we've seen crazy things happen, and I'm sure there could be another push to try to see if they could salvage it and get it done. But right now, as of yesterday, I was told it was not close, and we'll see if they could figure out anything by the start of the game.
30:57It didn't sound like that was going to be the case. Then what is it specifically, Schefter? Because it feels like this should be pretty easy since Witherspoon just got paid. Is it the years? Is it guaranteed money? What is the reason they're not even close? I don't know specifically But I've never got the sense That they've gotten close here All along And I'm going to guess Usually when that's the case It starts with money And I think Gonzalez wanted to be At or above Where Witherspoon was The Patriots have never been there Have not gotten close to there So I guess if you can't agree on the money The years become secondary because money usually is the sticking point on all these things.
31:43And it certainly seems like, for whatever reason, these two sides have not gotten close. And I remember when Witherspoon was getting done, it was a Saturday morning on the phone with various people. At that time, Gonzalez wasn't close. Nothing since then has changed that. And as of yesterday, when I had checked in on it, I was told it wasn't close. So, again, could something happen by tomorrow night? Sure. They could have some conversation tomorrow, Wednesday that changes things. It didn't sound like that was going to be the case.
32:15Pat McAfee:It was a Saturday morning. I was having my coffee. There was a little deal on the ground. I sent a text and said, hey, this must be good for Gonzo. And they said, absolutely not. Nothing has happened over there. Speaking of good for football, feels like a hit stick is all the way back with the hit man. Go ahead, Ty. Yeah, Shetty, we heard over the weekend Harrison Smith's coming back to the Vikings on a one-year deal. Is this a situation where they don't necessarily love what they have back there? or were they kind of just leaving the door open for him if he wanted to come back? And are they anticipating that he's going to start Sunday against the Packers?
32:45I think they're planning for him to be back. And I think the door was always open. When you have a guy of that character, of that stature, of that talent, he's always welcome back. And it always sounded like that that was a possibility that he was going to be back. Obviously, he just waited towards the end of the summer and for whatever reason decided to make it official he's going to be back. And I think that they think he's got a real chance to be ready. And we've seen this happen before where you've got a guy that is so savvy and so seasoned. They step in and it seems like they physically challenge themselves and play above and beyond.
33:20Remember Phillip Rivers in Seattle last year, that first game. Like nobody thought he might be able to do what he did. And he exceeded expectations. And I think Harrison Smith is a pro. He knows what it takes. And I think that they're hoping and believing that he'll be out there.
33:34Pat McAfee:Yes, he certainly will. His disguises are what make him so special. His ability to be where he's supposed to be while appearing to not be anywhere near where he's supposed to be. Quite a heady player. I think he'll probably be able to understand where his body's at, what the limitations are at the moment, and figure it out in real time. We as a football community are happy you're back, Harrison. Let's try to get him on the All-DB team because I know there's been some trails blazed over the last couple of years.
33:58Adam Schefter:Is that all right, D.C.? Certainly. Him entering year 15, he's been playing at a high, high level for a very long time, as Shefty kind of mentioned. Knowing the ins and outs of this defense, as versatile as he is when it comes to disguising, fooling quarterbacks. Now, obviously missing training camp and all that stuff, not playing football, that's obviously a question mark or something to look forward to. But he knows how to get his body ready to go. I'm sure he's been pushing himself in the offseason just like Aaron Donald was. But I can't wait to see the hitman back on the field.
34:24Pat McAfee:Hey, what did we miss, Shefty? What have we not brought up? What do you have? What do you have? A few things for you. First of all, we got Emeka Abuka back at practice today for the Bucs. which is good news. He's been dealing with a toe injury all along. Jonathan Brooks is running off to the side, not practicing with the team. We're waiting to see, again, what happens with him. And I think his status for week one is up in the air. He's had soreness. The Panthers running back we've been waiting for to get back. And, of course, we have the game Thursday night between the 49ers and the Rams. And I don't believe that there's still a final decision on George Kittle yet.
35:01We're waiting to see whether or not he plays. I know he made the trip. And look, he may be out there, but we do not know that yet. So we're still waiting to see.
35:11Pat McAfee:Shepty, if you're recovering from an injury and you don't know, are you hopping on and signing up for 34 hours of airplane time instead of maybe doing recovery or rehab or something like that? Honestly, it's a genuine question. do we can I know you're super duper with what you say how you say has to be I get it I understand you have a reputation and your career on the line with everything you say but doesn't that feel kind of like an ipso facto Pavlov's dogs type thing here if you hop on a plane to Australia you're probably playing listen I think that that was up in the air going in and he's looked good and he looks ready and they still may decide he's going to play all I'm saying is I got a couple of texts.
35:59It's not a lock yet that he's going to play. Now, again, I don't know what's going to happen. I won't be surprised if he's a warrior. When the lights come on, are you going to be surprised if George Kittle's playing? Not at all. Not at all. I just want to hear that it's official that he's playing. I haven't heard that yet. That's all I'm saying.
36:17Pat McAfee:Okay, I understand you're saying that you can't say it. I'm going to say it. There's nobody getting on that fucking plane that's not playing. No. Okay, because if not, they're going to do recovery and rehabilitation unless they're out there for a week, I guess. So him and Bo. Wait a minute.
36:29Adam Schefter:Maybe he has to. Is he breaking? Are they both playing?
36:32Pat McAfee:I don't know. Isn't that interesting? Yeah, they're playing. I think he's playing for sure. If you're getting on a plane to Australia and you're trying to recover, it's like in the altitude, the pressure, the dehydration, like all the things. It may be a real game-time decision.
36:46Adam Schefter:But that's even for like a cross-country flight. If they were playing the Giants and flying from San Francisco to New York, it might be like, oh, the pressure, the elevation, the flight. We don't know if we want to do that. and then you multiply that by four getting to Australia. I don't know if...
36:58Pat McAfee:Whatever the case, if he traveled over there, just support the boys. Mad respect. Great team, man. Make sure that that's a real thing. You're the best, Shefty. We appreciate you. All right, guys. Happy Labor Day. Happy to celebrate it by laboring. As Bill Schipmeck said, he looked at the Michigan football team one time. He said, all right, men, happy Labor Day, and we're going to celebrate by laboring. And I'm glad to see you guys are celebrating Labor Day the right way. Football season, bro. All right, we appreciate you. That's Adam Schefter. Yay! Missed a lot of Thanksgivings. Yep. Christmas.
37:27Hey.
37:28Pat McAfee:Day or Eve. Hey. Those all just kind of disappear for a lot of football people. Hell, there's probably – I mean, Detroit Lions coaches that have been there for a long time, not even the head coaches or whatever. Oh, yeah. They haven't been home on Thanksgiving ever. Ever. They're in their hole in the stadium trying to figure out how to win a damn game. Usually losing that game, too. I was going to say, lucky for those guys. They were fired pretty quickly. Oh, they were fired. They just go home. I hate Thanksgiving. I think it was my last season. We had Hall of Fame game, okay, earlier than everybody.
37:59Pat McAfee:Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve, I think, is what we had. So we hit the quadruple, and I was like, fuck this.
38:06Adam Schefter:That's what Boston did.
38:07Pat McAfee:I'm not doing this. I was staring down another surgery. I'm like, I'm not doing it. Am I doing this for the rest of my life? I can't. There's so many different reasons that we're packing up to it. It was like, we hit all of them, though. Oh, yeah. And it was like a fun little game to experience after retirement. and everybody's like so jacked up. It's like, oh, yeah, we do get to do Thanksgiving right now. Nice holiday. Great. Lovely. One of the best. Christmas as well. Yeah, but we would always have practice or something on those days. You know, even when you're not playing, you're at least in the building.
38:37Pat McAfee:Yeah. And shout out to the holiday season that's right around the corner. The best holiday is that it's football season. Yeah, bingo. And this past weekend was spectacular. College football had their week one slate, still finishing and wrapping up this evening. Who's Florida State? Who's SMU? We find out tonight as week one officially closes. But to kind of recap what happened this past weekend, ladies and gentlemen, it's time for Reese's Pieces from the Weekend with Reese Davis. Hey, Reese, I just want to let you know, great work on game day. You handled a lot of different chaos that was obviously happening that people know about and don't know about.
39:12Pat McAfee:It was an honor to get back into the saddle with you, pal, and we just hope that you would be able to tell the world what happened this past weekend from your mindset and then we'll pick you apart afterwards if that's okay with you. Absolutely, man. It was a great weekend, a lot of fun. I think it starts where we were, Pat, in Baton Rouge with LSU. Now, we wonder what's it going to look like. Got Pete Thamel out of the courthouse finally, and then LSU comes out there, and they look like a championship contender from the jump. Great defense, Witt Weeks, Principal Uman Mielin sort of dominating things there for LSU.
39:46But the one question I had, as great as Sam Levitt looked, and he was outstanding running the football, ran for over 100 yards in the first half, 100 yards plus in the game. Will he be able to do that, and is that what LSU has to do to be able to run the ball consistently? I don't know if it is. It's a weapon. I know this. They can extend plays. They can pick up first downs when everything looks broken with him, and that, to me, makes them look like a championship contender at the risk of overreacting the first week because Clemson might also just flat stink, and it certainly looked like that at times.
40:20The other championship contender that I saw on the weekend, and maybe I'm just trying to make a preseason prediction come true, watching Notre Dame last night, and I know there were a lot of Notre Dame people probably worried about the early part of the game and thinking back, you know, half of Marcus Freeman's losses have come in August or September. Here we go again, the mediocre Wisconsin team. Instead, Notre Dame took advantage of the break. They got a turnover in special teams. Close at halftime. They bided their time, and when the opportunity was there, they seized it with DJ McKinney getting this pick six you're seeing there that really broke Wisconsin's back, finished the game, and CJ Carr put together some great drives.
41:01They were like a boa constrictor. They just waited, waited, waited, squeezed, squeezed, squeezed, and finally squeezed the life out of them. That's what I want to see from a championship contender. I think the Irish are on track. The slow start, not worried about it in the least. Another slow start, I don't know if I'm worried about it or not. You have Boise State, Wisconsin. Now, first, let's start with Boise State. Lost by a touchdown in Autzen Stadium to Oregon. Maybe we're all trying to get too cute about who the best team from the group of six is going to be at the end. Maybe Memphis, maybe Navy.
41:34Before the Memphis UNLV game, some people had UNLV. Maybe it's just Boise. And maybe Oregon, I don't know if they're as good as we thought early on, but they don't have to be right now. When they've got guys like DeCorey and Moore that can put on the brakes on you right at the end and then make big explosive plays, which really to me that was the difference in this game. It was easier for Oregon to score than it was for Boise State. Not worried about Oregon yet, but I did expect a little more dominance from them than I saw. And I think Boise might be as good as anybody in the group of six, but it's still a little early there.
42:08Pat McAfee:okay then the thing i think yeah yeah so then yeah okay i'm excited for this i'm pumped about this from you because you are need you here yeah hey you are need you here authorities i think on college sports i think you understand that positioning of who you are i think you try to uphold that as well you're one of the representatives of all of college football and college basketball but certainly for college football you're one of the only people that get to speak to the people that are actually making decisions it's like what you say carries a lot of weight for a lot of different things and i'm excited for you to get into this you're talking michigan right now right i'm gonna talk michigan right now okay listen bryce underwood comes down that tunnel skipping i think you were with me whenever i saw that i was standing next to desmond howard and i go is that 19's your quarterback right and he goes yeah i go i've never seen that before from a quarterback ever in my life have i ever seen a quarterback do that now was i pseudo talking shit to Desmond Howard in real time as it was happening, saying, wow, I've never seen a quarterback do that.
43:09Pat McAfee:Did that prompt me to put a tweet out saying, wow, never seen a quarterback do this. He might go wild. He's going to go wild or whatever. First drive, not terrible. Not good football anywhere. Not good football at all. Then he hits a 60 yard after regulation has ended, potentially. Hail Mary. We don't think that's a wild afternoon in Ann Arbor. Okay, just for everybody that was killing me. But nonetheless, a lot of things I've never seen before with that Michigan game, how it was starting, how it went, and then certainly the ending. Reese, can you make some sense of this all, please, and kind of give us something to think about as we go forward with how we should view this?
43:47I don't know if I can make any sense of it because I don't remember anything quite like this. Now, I've seen games where seconds have been added to the clock. I sort of chuckled in our meeting this morning when Nick Saban talked about if we ever seen anything. I immediately thought, yeah, there was that whole kick six thing where you got the second at the end right before the attempted field goal. But it wasn't like this. And I understand everybody wants to get it right. And I understand 18 split was out of bounds. And technically the clock is over when, you know, when someone who's been out of bounds touches the ball.
44:21But there are a couple of things here, Pat. One, I feel like there ought to be a natural conclusion to a play that we get to before we start splitting hairs over a clock. but even bigger than that we can't have some secret synchronized clock and cameras that nobody knows about there has to be one clock now and then present it to the television audience and in addition to that and i think you brought this up in the meeting too let's hear what if we're going to get down to this kind of thing and super synchronized secret strobe synced clocks. I need to hear what everybody's talking about in real time when it happens.
44:59So I need to hear, okay, hey, look, they're looking at this. Let's go live to the command center for whatever officiating body's running this show. And this is what they're looking at and why. Because, you know, it's one of these little things that's funny in football. And I understand end of game situations are different, but throughout the course of the game, middle of the second quarter, maybe the ball spotted here on the 28, maybe it's the 28 and a half i don't know somewhere in there we'll put the ball down and play the next down then we get to other times when we're trying to look at a replay to spot the ball and now we're trying to look at a replay to get a tenth of a second back on a clock when we don't even have tents on the clock we need to be more transparent than this the other thing is you can't say definitively but man it is really hard to imagine if the roles were reversed at western michigan would have gotten another swing at that.
45:48I don't know. Look, you can't prove that. I heard you talking to Shefty about how you want to be balanced when you say things like that, but that's the first thought that comes to a lot of fans' mind. Think the Broncos would have gotten another shot at that?
46:02Pat McAfee:No way. No way, especially after, what, Whittingham's already on the field holding up a W? Whittingham's already on the field like they were celebrating it all. Alumni and everybody associated with Michigan is putting out, man, We suck. Okay? That's what they're putting out. And then everybody has to delete. Oh, actually, let's delete that. We're actually undefeated. So don't know how to tell you that this is not the case at all. I just, to your point about the transparency of the replays, the XFL did it. They had a guy on an Xbox remote controller, and he was directly to the ref, and we watched him fast-forward, slow it down, fast-forward, stop, and saying, looks like he's down at about the 32.
46:41Pat McAfee:Let me look at the other angle. Yeah, we're not seeing anything that says he isn't down to 32. I think that's third down, ball into 32, first down. And for all of us, it was like, hey, at least we know the why here. Then the ACC, I think, is trying it now, right? Don't we have a little bit of that happening? But the ACC is starting to do it, I think, Friday nights maybe. People love it. Yeah, big fan of it. I think XFL was very good. Because then whenever you present it, it's like, well, they're not going to want you to hear it, you know, the NFL or any of these big schools because, you know, if they're wrong, and then it's a big deal.
47:08Pat McAfee:It's like, well, if you're wrong, there's a chance a narrative narrative just gets started about your entire league basically that's basically saying you screwed a smaller school to take care of one of your bigger schools it's like that's the worst narrative that can come out about you being a crooked organization so if we hear this in real time and at least it's a part of the story as opposed to a defense of the story later maybe people could say well you heard what they said about the blah blah blah and it's like at this point the narrative's already gone to what you said about western michigan's never going to get it and it's like you run this back it's like what okay okay dude this sounds like something you would say if you were trying to cook it a little bit it's just a lot of bobbles i think a lot of different bobbles and you could also make the defense kid western michigan he wouldn't jump this out he knew he's out of bounds he saw the clock hit zero just like i want to get my hands on the ball you know he saw that in real time he would have potentially just kind of let that go so then that second ends because it hit something back there he could in theory say that like well I saw the clock.
48:07Pat McAfee:So the clock in the stadium that is re-synced to the refs doesn't matter? Is that what we're hearing? Yes. Kind of. Yeah. They want it to be the same, but apparently they say they have a strobe-synced clock with all of the cameras that they have access to that may or may not be precisely synced with the television clock. At least that's... I can't even trust the damn clock anymore. After our ref says, can you put 47 seconds back on that clock? We should all say, why? Doesn't matter. Please, just give us a guesstimation. About a minute. Just do it like soccer. Just run it all the time. It's football.
48:45Pat McAfee:Keep playing. Once they start breaking out words like strobe synced clock, you know. They're just full of shit. You know what? Maybe I should have known this, and this is probably on me that I didn't. Yes. I didn't know that there were separate synchronizations of the clock I didn't know I didn't realize that there were two different things we were working with I'm 39 I don't know what age you start remembering stuff like I'm hoping my daughter she's 3 right now I'm hoping she remembers everything I know that's probably not likely there will only be a couple moments so I don't know the exact age I started watching ball but I'm from Pittsburgh and my dad diehard Steelers fan I feel like we've all been watching football for a long ass fucking time we all everybody that's ever watched ball was like, oh, okay, to the new clock thing.
49:30Pat McAfee:I don't think we're the – like, I don't think we're a forgiving society whenever it comes to this type of thing at all. So they're going to be battling against us for the rest of the season. And then Michigan's got Oklahoma next week. So we're going to find out if ball don't lie or not. Yeah, we are. Yes, we certainly are. Anything that Reese said in there that you have a couple questions about? Tone, we'll start with you.
49:49Darius Butler:Yeah, I do. I wanted to look ahead this upcoming weekend, Reese, the Ohio State and Texas. What were your thoughts on those two teams this weekend? Obviously playing lesser competition. Both of them blew them out. You know, the quarterbacks looked okay. There was some stuff here and there. But what were your thoughts on those two teams going into the huge matchup this next weekend? I thought they were biding their time for this week. They flexed some weapons. Texas showed off a lot of their new weapons. I know Arch had a tough pick. But I thought that overall they probably opened up a little bit more offense to him.
50:20And he was really good, you know, the last month or so of last season. I thought, by and large, he picked up where he left off. Having Cam Coleman out there and Hollywood Smothers in the backfield just going to make them terrific. Ohio State's as advertised, but we're not going to really find out about Ohio State's rebuilt defense. I know they've got great players, but maturing into those positions and producing at least close to the level of those guys last year, we'll know a lot more about that Saturday.
50:47Pat McAfee:I don't like at all what happened to Arch before that game started. because you remember when the Oregon Duck came running down and lost its head last year? You see how Oregon's season ended? Yeah, you're right. Okay, you saw how that ended. It was not good. Okay, that might have been all the way back to that. I don't want to blame said Duck, but hey, they made some rules to change that. Hopefully that doesn't happen again. Did you see Arch running on the field? Oh, yeah. Boom.
51:09Darius Butler:Not good. Can't happen. And that person just disappeared.
51:12Pat McAfee:Boom. Boom. Wow. Boom. That's a starting QB. Can't happen. Hopefully that's the worst stumble of the season. That's a tough one, though. That's a tough one. Who's grabbing his arm? I think there's cords, right? Probably cords that he's hitting under there because you've got to make sure the smoke is good. It's like anybody but Arch this can happen to, I think, would be the sentiment. Hey, Arch, we're going to need you to run down the middle of the tunnel. We've got cords on the right side. We've got some shit on the left side. We've got camera people over here. We've got some people that are a little handsy, too.
51:41Pat McAfee:They're going to want to grab you a little bit because you're Arch Manning. We need you in the middle of the tunnel. Just something to think about as we go. It's first weekend. It's kind of on Arch, too. I guess.
51:48Adam Schefter:What? Look, you can't stop trying to be one of the guys. Exactly. Get up front. Get your ass up front, lead the boys out. Amen. Camera guy's a little too close. I got trampled.
51:58Pat McAfee:Okay, well, the social media people making themselves a part of the entrances is certainly something I love, too. Yeah, you've worked your ass off to get in there to be able to earn yourself to run out of the fucking tunnel. Okay. Let's make sure every shot has, you know, like, get the help. We're not using it. You know, I don't look sick. Get to the front. Great access. Yes. But, yeah, we need you up in the front there.
52:20Adam Schefter:You don't see Bryce Underwood tripping from way up front like that? No, you don't.
52:24Pat McAfee:He's flying. He is flying around. Hey, Desmond, and I'll say this to Desmond Howard, I was bewildered about how Bryce Underwood played after this entrance. Weren't you bewildered as well? Good drive. Reese? I sensed a lot of bewilderment from the All-Mays uniforms. There was bewilderment all over the big house at sea. Desmond Howard described something as bewildered, and I laughed. We all had a big laugh. We all had a big laugh. And I'll tell you what, Des is batting about 1 ,000 right now, just in all aspects. And I think everybody from Michigan is pretty eager to see how this team ends up doing.
53:04Pat McAfee:Yeah, we're going to find out. I think Oklahoma might end up pooping on them.
53:10Adam Schefter:That was terrible. We will find out. Terrible outing. I know it's week one, and they can't get it rolling, but I'm very, very concerned about Bryce Underwood.
53:20Pat McAfee:Okay, so then definitely not then, but there has to be a team that race like somewhere. Absolutely.
53:24Adam Schefter:I know it's very early in the season. Week one, we talked about Arches team. We talked about Miami. We talked about LSU. Who is your number one team coming out of week one? I know it's not completely finished yet, but who's your number one team right now based on what you've seen? You mean just – I'm still ranking Notre Dame number one because I think they're the best, but I don't think there's much doubt that the best week one performance was LSU. I mean, at least to me. I mean, it was a great win for Ole Miss. There were some great wins for a lot of other teams. Even I think Oregon had a really solid win, and Boise State turns out to be really good this year.
53:59But I think the best performance, if you were doing a power rating week to week, LSU would have to be on top, I think.
54:06Pat McAfee:Yeah, that was outrageous to watch them. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your pregame and halftime show alongside Joey and Des. I had a blast with you guys. That was a lot of fun. It was a lot of fun. There might be a happy medium time-wise. The thing that's frustrating is when you get those and they're like two minutes and you don't really get to capture the moment. But, I mean, what we were on for probably close to an hour, it was a blast. I mean, I felt like we were just letting people experience what we were experiencing in Death Valley. Yeah, and thank you for hanging out in that room for six, seven hours as you were literally in a holding pattern as they were getting delays.
54:41Pat McAfee:Because he's supposed to do the halftime first game. supposed to fill time this time. Him, Joey, and Dez supposed to do this entire thing. I was very lucky to join them. And they were just sitting. They were holed up in an office, basically just on standby. And then they get a 30-minute heads up that there's been another delay. Oh, we're going to another delay. By the time I got into the room, I was drenched. Absolutely drenched. Drenched with downpour. Had no coverage. We were out there just walking through. Me and Gumpy, it was great to be out there and be a part of it. I walk in. Reese Davis is sitting sideways on one of those seats with his head up on a table like this.
55:13Pat McAfee:It looked as if he had been sitting on that chair for three, four hours. He's trying to find every comfortable way. And it was like, yeah, we've been here all day, bro. So thank you for doing that. Thank you for the hospitality. Great start to the season. And thank you for joining us today, Reese. You bet, guys. Always a pleasure. You guys have a great day. Hey, that was Reese's Pieces from the weekend with Reese Davis. Yeah, Reese. You got to say weekend. Yeah. Like not strengthened, weekend. Weekend. Sure. You know what I'm saying? But it is weekend like the other two days. because Reese's piece is weakened.
55:47Pat McAfee:You see it all kind of blends in. He's the right guy for the job for that.
55:50Darius Butler:Oh, yeah, big time.
55:51Pat McAfee:Yeah, because by the time we get to Monday morning, there's a game day meeting. Reese already has about 400 thoughts. He's not the only one on that call that already has thought ahead completely and already digested it all. But he was also doing the U.S. Open, I think, right? Yeah. Good moment with Alcaraz. Absolute, yeah, whenever Alcaraz had no idea who he was playing. No clue. Yeah, he just focused right here. Okay, here's the moment. Maybe just a quick word on the challenges that both of them could bring. Two? What do you mean? Say again? Say again? You're either going to play Shelton or Sitsipas.
56:24Maybe just a word on both of them and the challenges.
56:27Pat McAfee:I thought, oh, my God, I thought I was playing, you know, my best. Oh, my God. Surprise. Yeah. He had no idea who was taking it. That's how in the moment people are. You've got to remember that. Be where your feet are. What's happening now is happening now. that's kind of how Mr. Al Perez looks at it. He's locked in.
56:44Darius Butler:Yeah.
56:45Pat McAfee:You know who else is? Who? Ben Shelton. He better be. Let's go. Big one tomorrow night. Yeah, we got big service coming. Don't you worry about that. All right, hour two will be on the other side. We have Orlovsky joining us. AJ Hawk. A bunch of headlines we have to cover. And life is good. Be a friend. Tell a friend something nice. It might change your life. We'll see you then.
57:03This episode is brought to you by the Hulu original series, Chad Powers, starring Glenn Powell. This season, the walls are closing in on Chad's biggest secret. 57:58Pat McAfee:This is the greatest week one of the college football season is about to conclude after this evening. Sorry, easy for me to say. SMU versus Florida State. Who are these two teams? We shall see. SMU has been in the dance the last couple of years. Will they be able to continue that as they have the backing of North Dallas, I do believe, is the area which is a pretty prominent part of Dallas and of Texas. I think they do have the support, and obviously they potentially do have the dogs, as Coach Lashley has a high-powered offense that he certainly favored as he travels down to Tallahassee to take on Florida State.
58:31Pat McAfee:Now, Florida State with Coach Norvell, certainly in a breaking point, potentially.
58:36Darius Butler:Got to win.
58:36Pat McAfee:Now, there's been some money talk about what his contract owes him and why they haven't potentially moved on in years past. Maybe this is the year that Florida State breaks through and Norvell gets back to the point in which he was almost making it to, the national championship if he didn't have three different quarterbacks or two different quarterbacks get hurt end up on their third string so we'll certainly be fascinated by this the weekend was spectacular the storylines in abundance the nfl kicks off on wednesday night then we got a game on thursday right we got friday then we got saturday we got a couple massive games michigan oklahoma obviously texas ohio state this weekend that's big for the slate yeah and then
59:09Darius Butler:you got an entire sunday nfl slate coming yeah made it boys we're here you did it you've done Got it.
59:14Pat McAfee:And then what? Monday Night Football.
59:16Darius Butler:That's right.
59:17Pat McAfee:Holy hell. Great ones. Talk to the tables here at Bossy Conner and at Ty Schmidt. One half of the hammer. Got it. Cowboys AP Tone is here. And nine-year NFL vet looking very cool. So cool. Thank you, sir. Is that checkerboard? I just saw it. Yeah, kind of. Chessboard. Chess for him. Oh, yeah. You guys have been playing chess, I heard. A lot of chess. That's nine-year NFL vet, Darius J. Butler. Good to see you, D-Butch. Good to see you. What a weekend of ball, man.
59:39Adam Schefter:Great weekend.
59:40Pat McAfee:Felt good to be back.
59:41Adam Schefter:Absolutely. We got through the first hour. I hate that I didn't mention, but obviously always repping. 1-0. Coach Candle. 1-0, 56-7, shellacking of Lafayette. Candle is underway in stores.
59:52Pat McAfee:What was the spread for that one?
59:53Adam Schefter:I almost picked it. Ooh. They covered it. Connecticut covered.
59:56Pat McAfee:One and a half? No, yeah, I know, but I almost picked it. So thank God that I didn't. I'm learning now in real time that you guys dominated them. Dominated. That was almost my super dog, just so I could bury you, Kyle. I just want to let you know I almost did that. I didn't do it, but I almost did it. Saved you. I'm going to stick away from that. Yeah, it certainly did save me. So you, it was mostly for Dan Orlovsky. Sure, sure. You look like Dan-O a little bit. Yeah, I love that. That was kind of the thought. He'll be joining us here in a few moments. He'll know that. But I thought maybe you guys have kind of turned a page.
1:00:22Pat McAfee:Maybe you guys aren't a terrible football team. And it turns out maybe you're not.
1:00:25Adam Schefter:Yep, Osborne, obviously Jason Kendall, head coach, new quarterback as well, counting for four touchdowns. So speaking of Dan-O, who trailblazed for that position, we got Joey. Made the 53. Made the 53 as an undrafted free agent. And then now we got Osborne leading the way down there to Rensselerville.
1:00:40Pat McAfee:Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen, Rentschler Field. The rent. Yeah, I get it, yeah. Hey, a lot of greats played there. Yeah. Donald Brown. Yeah. First-round draft pick, running back, Indianapolis Colts, legend. UConn used to have dogs everywhere. Hopefully, you'll be able to get back in. It feels like there's some have and have-nots in college football. Yep. The average margin of victory this past weekend is, I believe, the largest since 1994 or something like that. That would make sense. 31 – or 1944, sorry. 31.7 points. 7-W-W-2. Average margin of victory. And obviously greatest generation, what's going on?
1:01:14I mean, you've got to run up the score. You want to be ranked high and have a cool resume. You can't just win anymore. You've got to win by a lot.
1:01:22Pat McAfee:And also, when you're winning, you put in maybe some backups. A lot of these places that are really – they have a second person that's getting paid probably a lot of money as well, who is probably better than the other team's starters, definitely. You can almost get down into maybe third. Now, they're talking about how teams aren't able to just stack five stars anymore because those five stars are going to go somewhere else to get playing time. But there are certainly guys that are too deep in places that are trying to figure out whether or not they're going to stay for the next year or not. Whenever they get in their third, fourth quarter, it's like this is a six-star guy.
1:01:50Pat McAfee:Filthy. Chris Nairn Jr. Exactly. God damn, boom, touchdown. How you doing? Legend Bay, that running back. An absurd touchdown for Ohio State. Yeah, Legend B, I believe I saw them tweeting about him. Great name. Yeah. Almost want to go back in time. Midas, also a legendary name, but Legend McAfee, certainly something that we could look to as being awesome. And let's not get crazy, though, here. It's fourth quarter. It's 42-3. Ball State had a couple first downs. It made me wonder about this Ohio State defense. Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen, is an Ohio State legend, a college football national champion, Super Bowl champion, Ryder Cup winner, ladies and gentlemen, A.J.
1:02:25Pat McAfee:Hawke. Hawke, I saw a couple first downs. I didn't like it. I didn't like it at all. What was your takeaway from the Ohio State Buckeyes as we, the program, we'll get into our best weekend yet okay potentially was i think it was uh aj you'll lead us off with this entire thing your thoughts and your best weekend yet your favorite part of it yeah obviously i think reese was right you know i state seems to be as advertised and you're in kind of a weird spot when you're such a huge favorite like if a team gets one first down they make one play people freak out and think that you know oh what are we doing we're not we're not what we thought we were but i think they are who we thought they were jeremiah smith Look how he holds that ball out in one hand.
1:03:07Like, all right, here we go. Let me catch this on my helmet and then stick it out there. But all the attention that he grabs, it's fun to watch this Ohio State offense. I think they'll continue to get better and better. But I'll tell you what, I'm excited about some of these young bucks on the defense, man. Some of these guys we have not seen play yet and getting some of their first action. We'll go at number 34 right there. You see Wilder, absolute freshman. I don't think he has any stats on the stat sheet. He just absolutely is a destructor. Like this guy, you talk about like block destruction when they're trying to block him, splitting double teams, hump moves, looks like Reggie White at times in the backfield.
1:03:40So a guy like him, I am very, very high on him, and I'd love to see him pop up on the film when he turned it on.
1:03:45Pat McAfee:I like that new coordinator on the offensive side were able to get it done. New players on the defensive side able to get it done. It does feel like maybe the best part of the best weekend yet for A.J. should be that the Ohio State Buckeyes maybe are who we thought they were. Let's continue to bounce around our favorite moments of the best weekend yet. D-Bot, what was your favorite part of the weekend?
1:04:07Adam Schefter:Yeah, you just mentioned new coordinators. I'm going to go to the same coordinator, Shannon Dawson, down there in Miami, with new quarterback. This is the third time in a row now. Ward, Beck, and now Darian Mensah going to Malachi Tony, going absolutely off against Stanford Friday night. 230-plus yards, three touchdowns, basically rewriting the record books when it comes to the wide receiver position at the University of Miami. Mensah, Malachi, you thought, hey, how long would it take to get on the same page? Did not take long at all. It looked unguardable the way he runs these routes. They call him baby Jesus for a reason.
1:04:39Adam Schefter:Spore it twice right there. Made guys run into each other. Unbelievable. One future Broward Hall of Famer right there, Malachi. And then another one, Ohio State, Jeremiah Smith. I love him kind of answering the bell because anytime Malachi does something, at least in South Florida, the conversation will be like, okay, what's Jeremiah going to do now? What's he going to do? And he's in his own right great player. He'll be a top three or four pick next season. Just unbelievable start to the season as well. Dominate, didn't even play the second half. Malachi played 51 snap, I believe. Jeremiah played like 36.
1:05:08Adam Schefter:Once again, dominating. Now you think, okay, top two probably guys in the Belindicoff race. No, these guys are thinking about the Heisman. First game Friday night, boom, touchdown, Heisman pose. Once again, Saturday afternoon, boom, touchdown, Heisman pose. So just love seeing these guys going on. Both Miami guys, but played at high school football in Broward County. So love to see that.
1:05:26Pat McAfee:I am very worried for both of them that the person throwing them the ball might get the credit for the touchdown and the Heisman voting, but I do appreciate that these two might be the best football players in the United States of America, and obviously both from where? Where are they from? Miami, Florida. Man, I thought Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh was going to have the two best wide receivers this year. They might. Turns out South Florida.
1:05:45Darius Butler:We're the DBs. We got Revis. We created DBs to defend these Florida boys.
1:05:49Pat McAfee:Quarterbacks, DBs. Yeah, true, true. Okay, we'll get you some offensive linemen if you need it, but it does feel as if the explosion out of South Florida is certainly benefiting both the Canes, who are all the way back, and Ohio State. Malachi Tony seemingly he's on stage. So Ryan Paganetti, football genius, football nerd, through and through. You know, I put out the tweet that baby Jesus is about to have a biblical season. Like, this is about to be crazy because of his first 20 minutes. And if Mensa's going to be able to play like that, I mean, this is going to be a problem for a lot of people, obviously, certainly in the ACC.
1:06:18Pat McAfee:If you pick somebody else, what a decision. He was on pace to have 102 touchdowns after that first quarter.
1:06:23Adam Schefter:I mean, it's unbelievable. I mean, you look at him and you see, obviously, the explosion, you see the route running, but the things that don't show up, AJ was just talking about number 34 in Ohio State, the things that don't show up on the stat sheet, like you watch it, we were boots on the ground watching this team last year in the playoff run. You watch him block, you watch him do the other things. There was a clip that came out early in the game where he was wide open down the field, didn't get the ball thrown to him. Somebody else made a play and he's still dancing to celebrate. So that's kind of who this guy is behind the scenes in the locker room.
1:06:51Adam Schefter:I mean, this is unbelievable. D1 guys out there looking absolutely ridiculous. Now that's terrible, terrible technique, Terrible effort by number 40, but dominates for Malachi Tony.
1:07:01Pat McAfee:Yeah, it's a tough go. Hey, it's going to be like that sometime. Whenever baby Jesus is on the other side. And I think we're all excited that they seemingly found another trigger man. The way they've gone through quarterbacks down there. We talk about Signetti being able to evaluate talent, which we'll certainly talk about here in a little bit. But also, Cristobal has been good at finding out who he needs for his particular system. And they went through a lot to get Ments out of Duke. Obviously, Duke, reigning ACC champions. That's right. Miami has never won the ACC. Miami has never been the ACC champions.
1:07:30Pat McAfee:Never won it. I think they're the best team in the ACC. And when I was asked to pick the ACC champion, I picked UNC just because the ACC has chaos. The ACC does not make a lot of sense. The Duke is the reigning ACC champion. I don't think people really remember that or think about that. Their quarterback is now the guy spinning at the baby Jesus right there. There was a couple lawsuits, I think. There was some holding stuff that took place. They really wanted him. And it was obvious why. Yeah, I mean, he might be the best quarterback in the entire country. Now, speaking of quarterbacks, quarterbacks throw football forward.
1:08:03Pat McAfee:Ty Schmidt, what was your favorite part of the best weekend yet? Yeah, I mentioned this at the top of the show, but the Iowa Hawkeyes are all the way back, and that's what it was. All offseason is, hey, we got two quarterbacks here. Both these guys might stink, don't really know who is going to start. And then, you know, in comes Tone Diaz. You know, you mentioned him. Diaz is it. You mentioned him on game day. And a lot of Iowa fans were thinking, you know, this guy's got an offer from Alabama. Basically every big-time program wants him. Why the hell is this guy committing to Iowa? What the hell is wrong with him?
1:08:34Does he have mental issues? Potentially. Because if you have Alabama and all these other schools coming after you, why are you going to Iowa? What are you doing? And maybe that's why. Right away, on his first possession as a Hawkeye, he has three catches for over 50 yards, catches a touchdown. They haven't had a guy do that in, I don't know, 15 years, something like that. And maybe that's what he's thinking is I can go and kind of be the change I want to see in this program. But it's more than that. You know, you were mentioning, you know, Pennsylvania, you know, offensive linemen. Offensive linemen are built and bred in Iowa and at the University of Iowa.
1:09:08Everyone knows it. We saw it again over the weekend. Again, Northern Illinois is not great. But, boy, Iowa just beat the shit out of those boys. They didn't have – you know, we're talking, you know, their offensive line and their run game. I get it. But we also talk about Phil Parker's defense. They lost a lot of starters. Northern Illinois didn't have a first down until like seven minutes left in the third quarter, and it was because of kind of a phantom P.I. call. And special teams, we saw it up there again. They run another pump back for a touchdown. Evan James, just kind of another guy. It's all these things that you expect from Iowa, and they just continue to do them, continue to do them with new people.
1:09:43And if they have a quarterback who's just like half worth of shit, I'm not expecting a guy to go out there and win a Heisman. I wanted to raise heck all offseason. Just average play. Yeah, just average players. You did want to raise heck. I wanted to raise heck. No. Okay, what can Brad do for you? I'm a Hank Brown guy. The heck. It was great. It was great. I'm done with that. I want Hank Brown in there moving forward. So I'm feeling great. And, you know, after a weekend where the Big Ten was kind of, I don't want to say lackluster, they went 14-2, but I'm coming out of that weekend thinking Iowa is one of the best four teams in the Big Ten without a doubt.
1:10:17Pat McAfee:Okay, I'm excited for you. So you're saying it's a lot of stylies across the park. A lot of stylies. out there for the Hawks. And, you know, that's what we expect. And, boy, what a treat it was on Saturday. I love that now you guys have a wide receiver. So this amplifies it even more about not being able to have a guy that can get a ball to him. Yeah. You know, so I didn't know where. And even that touchdown you saw, I mean, what a catch. You know, Hank Brown throwing a 12-yard slant 8 ,000 miles an hour as high as he can really made Tone Diaz go up and get it for his first one. So we'll see. You know, there's going to be plenty of Saturdays where I'm going to be screaming until I'm blue in the face because Hank Brown is 12 of 26 for 143 yards and a touchdown and interception.
1:10:57But that's okay because that's what I've come to expect. I know that's the case.
1:11:01Pat McAfee:Yeah, but you guys are going to have the stylies that you have. We're going to rush for 250 yards a week. And if we sprinkle in Tony Diaz, I mean, there's a chance this is a new year. Without a doubt. And that's why that was your best. Yeah, I mean, it was the best weekend yet. Yeah, it certainly was. Let's go to, I think we're staying in the Big Ten. Yeah, we are. Tone, what is your best of the weekend yet?
1:11:22Darius Butler:Let's go to the reigning defending Big Ten champions. Oh, and the reigning defending national champions, the Indiana Hoosiers. They took on North Texas and Neil Braun this weekend. You know, everyone had questions about the quarterback, Josh Hoover, coming from TCU. This man was beaten and bloodied after he had his helmet twisted around his neck. It's down his jersey, down his pants. He can barely see, and he throws another touchdown to Charlie Becker. That answered all the questions I had to see about Josh Hoover in this one. And I bet his teammates absolutely love this. Him taking a beating, just so bloody looking like J.J.
1:11:59Darius Butler:Watt, throwing the touchdown to Charlie Becker. All those questions about Josh Hoover. Yeah, it was North Texas, but he played a great game, threw a touchdown to Nick Marsh on the first drive as well. I think IU's going to be just fine on offense.
1:12:11Pat McAfee:Yeah, I think they are. And you saw that sold-out stadium. It's amazing what football can do to an entire community, entire state. Incredible catch, incredible throw, back shoulder there. No coverage can stop that no matter who you're playing against. If they're going to be like that all year, that's certainly going to be problematic. Charlie Becker, two touchdowns,$2 ,000 donation by us and also by him. And I believe Joe Buck has confirmed he'll be donating as well. Yeah, kind of put him in a – remember, we publicly pressured him into joining us. And then I got him when he had a couple drinks in him.
1:12:37Pat McAfee:And I said, hey, said you're going to donate. Could you do that? And he said, I'm in. Texted me the other day and said, here's$1 ,000. And then he said, there's another$1 ,000. So I think he knows. So we're all pumped. to kind of help out with Charlie. But it does appear as if Indiana does have the capability of being able to run it back. They're going to have to figure things out. Coach Cignetti said, I don't really know what these guys are. We're going to find out what these guys are. We're going to see their mental toughness. We're going to see if they're going to be able to bounce back. Hoover, I saw a couple of tweets, had that as I had to confirm to look at it, you know, because adult supervision needs to see this photo.
1:13:08Pat McAfee:There's just blood all over them. Cignetti's going to love that.
1:13:11Adam Schefter:They got a bigger issue, I think. It's not on the football field. It's on the sideline. I'm not sure who. It might have been commented about it. Sig's got to take their ball cap off. It was tough. Yeah, he's got it. He's not a ball cap. He said it was tough. He doesn't have to do shit. He can do whatever the hell. He can wear a fedora on the side. That would have been sick. We kind of wish he would. That would be cool, too.
1:13:35Pat McAfee:That's what we're talking about. Maybe fedora would be good. He's not a ball cap coach. Yeah, no. Well, he said no shade. My face. Exactly. I was getting burned up. I couldn't see anything on there. It's week one. I want to see what the guys look like. I got no shade. What if he comes out eye black next time? Instead of the cap, he comes eye black on the outside. Okay, let's continue the best weekend yet before we bounce back to the NFL as we are just days away from the NFL season kicking off. Connor, what's the best of the weekend yet? Yeah, I mean, we can stay in the Big Ten, and unfortunately we're going to go to Rutgers because we mentioned the margin of victories being huge, and one of the teams that contributed to that was UMass, except they were about 20-point dogs.
1:14:14William Pop Watson III played like William Wallace III. He led the UMass Minutemen all the way to victory. And it wasn't just him. That is a high school teammate of his, Joseph Griffin, the pride of Springfield Central. I mean, it was just remarkable. This started the weekend off, by the way. This was on Thursday night, so it's hard to remember all the amazing things that happened from then to now. But watching the UMass Minutemen win a football game on the road against a Big Ten team was just pure joy, elation. We are not that far away from last year where they were down 45 to nothing, hit a field goal, and then set off fireworks at home.
1:14:56And now, just one season later, Pop Watson III is leading these boys on the road to a victory against a Big Ten school. The zoo, UMass, was probably ballistic. I'm not so sure that you and game day and all the boys are going to be visiting UMass, maybe week eight when they're 7-0 playing some other school, and it would be pure madness. I'm hoping that's what happens. I don't know how many UMass games I'm going to be catching this year just on a week-to-week basis, but Pop Watson III is electrifying, just to get his stat line out there. 19-22, 197 yards, three tuds, 40 rush yards. He is a legitimate ball player.
1:15:35He might be either in the NFL next year or the quarterback of your favorite team because he was a stud for that entire game. And I just can't believe the UMass Minutemen ended up winning a game against a Big Ten opponent in week one.
1:15:48Pat McAfee:Greg Sciano, Debo Sweeney, both staples at their places. Yeah. What's going on? A bit long in the tooth, you see. Potentially. Potentially the longest of them all. Yeah. Yeah, around there, especially with the way it started. But it's just opening week. Nobody knows anything. Yeah, you're right. They might be fine. You want to know what I know? What's that? Punter's doing it. Yeah, we were. Punter's doing it. Let's go to West Virginia, shall we? Okay, this guy is an absolute lad. His name is Brian Hanson. Okay, no relation to any of the other Hansons that you potentially just thought of right there.
1:16:16Pat McAfee:Obviously, the ball is being snapped from their own 15-16. Absolute nuke. Coast Carolina kid can't catch it. Rolls all the way down. Seek! Gets a big-time save down at the one. How you doing? Keep it moving. That ended up being a huge deal. Now, the Coast Carolina Chanticleers will go on a 99-yard touchdown scoring drive right after this punt. but a lot of clock was eating up. Yeah, nobody was happy about that, but a lot of clock was eating up, obviously. That's covered, right? It's 24-0 at halftime. Let's not ask any other questions.
1:16:49Darius Butler:Number three is a four-star freshman out of the Whitfield.
1:16:51Pat McAfee:Incredible punt here by Brian Hanson. Proud of him actually getting a bomb off there. West Virginia, tough place to punt and kick. It is breezy there. Early in the season took advantage of it. Now let's go to Oregon, shall we? Oregon punter, Bailey Etridge. I believe Bailey Etridge is his name. It's a beauty here. Turns this thing over. It's in the sun. It's not in the sun. Let me go ahead and check this thing up right at the half-yard line. Wonderful special teams. Special teams can bite you in the ass opening week or it can be of an asset. If it's an asset, you're probably going to win the games.
1:17:20Pat McAfee:If it's an asshole, you're going to lose the games. Sure. Okay, and that's certainly something that can happen early. Special teams, it's always tough to get on the same page. And then, obviously, the punt from last night. That is one of the most beautiful things I've seen in the summer. Oh, man. man. Absolute beast. Sean West, 69, 70-yard, absolute bomb. Now, I saw some people saying he actually hit that thing a lot longer because of where he actually kicked the ball. I agree. They tracked the stats from the line of scrimmage. Hits a nice golf swing because the checkup was righteous. Sean West, absolute thing of beauty, pal.
1:17:55Pat McAfee:Loved the way he took two steps, NFL-style punt, and obviously the returner, who's probably going to be in the NFL, potentially end up in the NFL, Notre Dame's returner, Couldn't even handle it. So this is a thing of beauty. Helps out your team. Obviously, the second half would go how the second half went. But Wisconsin was rolling, and that was a thing of beauty that had everybody talking. And I can't wait to watch him and the rest of the guys the rest of the year. Because, you know, there's an award for a best punter in the country. And one of these guys is going to win it. That's right. And also, it feels like punters are better than they've ever been right now.
1:18:23Adam Schefter:Have you kind of come back to the, I guess, American punt style? Because I went for a while. Yeah, we're not doing the running thing, are we? Yeah, I like it. It's all three.
1:18:34Darius Butler:Was Louisville doing the rollout? Who shot it over someone's head last night? It was Louisville. Yeah, Louisville. They were doing the rollout.
1:18:39Pat McAfee:Yeah. But it does feel like we had a little. Is that coming back? Well, what's the purpose of having it? Okay, so now I don't want to counter it. I like what we're doing. But let's take some time here. There was also a couple of these guys take snap, wait, wait, wait. Somebody gets there and then they kick it. There's still a little bit of that happening. But, yeah, the complete run to the side seemingly stopped.
1:19:00Adam Schefter:No, not as much of it. I feel like every 90 % of the team is doing it at some point. Yeah. Yeah.
1:19:07Pat McAfee:I even did it. I've never been to Australia one time. Again, I need you to learn how to kind of hit that thing on the run. Sure. First time I did it, live action. I think it was Syracuse at home. Somebody at home. Day game, a little rainy. I run to my right. It's my first time punting in a game. Another game I did punt at Plum. Yeah, my senior year I punt at Plum. So it was like first time punting, long time. Boom. Catch it. Run to my right. First time definitely ever doing this. Hit this thing just trying to get it on the ground and bounce. Right on my ass. I'm going to just pull back bump.
1:19:36Adam Schefter:Speaking of, I saw your highlights. It's a weekend, too, SportsCenter. Hey, it was nice. Hey, thank you, SportsCenter. People forget.
1:19:43Pat McAfee:I was there. I saw a lot of people saying, this guy played? That's crazy. People think I talked the way I talk, and I just never played. Seriously? That mean you're doing something right? I guess. I hope. Or not doing it right at all, you know, if people don't even know. Joining us now is a man who played a long time. Nobody gives him credit for it. He was on the cover of Playboy magazine. That's right. Whenever he was in college as one of the greatest college quarterbacks of all time. Ladies and gentlemen, full trailblazer for the UConn Huskies in the state of Connecticut as a whole. We know a lot about him.
1:20:15Pat McAfee:He's a gentleman, the face of ESPN coverage. This guy's going to be everywhere, they say about me. Okay, ladies and gentlemen, Dan Orlovsky. Yeah, Dan O. Dan O, what up, man? What's going on? How are you guys? What's going on? It was the cover of Playboy. Is that right? Do I have that right? Maxim. Okay. Hot 100. Hot 100. Especially at that time. I mean, that was crazy. I'll tell you what, Dano. Being able to be on the cover of East Bay, too. Wasn't he on the cover of East Bay? Yeah. And Maxim. And with a little dabble of Playboy as an All-American in there. You got good range. Let's talk about some of your range.
1:20:50Pat McAfee:We'll obviously dive into the NFL in a matter of moments. But this Michigan thing, fascinating. I think our platform should be utilized from football people saying they've never seen this before and they all think it's crazy as we move forward. Do you want to kind of check that box on our show, saying that you think it's absurd what happened and how did it happen? Or how do you view the whole extra second on the clock situation? Yeah, it's probably the most embarrassing win I've ever seen in college football. I know that. Yes, we knew you had something. I'm happy we gave you a chance to do that.
1:21:22I haven't gotten a chance to do that. Yeah, right. Here's my thing. How am I, as a viewer, I have no skin in the game, supposed to just trust that that clock is synced up with the actual play. Like, I'm just supposed to trust it, even though the game clock that I'm watching. Also, I can't see the ball. I can't see the ball from that back angle. So with all due respect to the Big Ten, because I can see the ball in this angle, I can't see the ball. So I don't know exactly when the player touches it. I can make the guess and the assumption. Is it there? I have no idea. But you go from the other angle, the ball, when the ball is going towards the defender, and you can see clearly that the clock is zero before, not this angle, not this angle, Foxy.
1:22:08You go to the one where you see from the field perspective, essentially. You see the defender go up. You see the ball. the clock clearly is at zero before it touches the defender at that angle so i don't know like how i'm supposed to just believe that the reverse angle is the reverse angle like the clock clearly hits zero before he touches it there you slow it down even more we did it on yep so i don't i don't
1:22:33Pat McAfee:get it yeah none of us understand it and we've been watching ball a long time and now we're being told about a different clock it's like well so does any clock matter and then why is the ref going off that clock then ever right so like then that clock should mean nothing to the ref ever right we should be going off the actual clock like well that one syncs up with the actual clock it's like but it doesn't though because we just found out can't have it and then look where the ball on this angle this is the one foxy no that's the game winner yeah the first one look at the look at where the um the ball goes with the defender on this one it's not like he goes and you know touches it at its highest point it's basically waste before he touches it so that's why that reverse angle it's like i have no idea what the ball is and you're trying to tell me a tenth of a second matters here.
1:23:16Pat McAfee:Yeah, I think we all feel that same way. And then Reese Davis said, do you think Western Michigan's getting that extra tenth of a second back on the clock if it's reverse? And it's like, well, that's immediately what everybody thinks. So that's going to be a little bit of a feels like a cloud. Western Michigan did come out after they saw the angle with the clock and a tenth of a second in a super duper clock. This is a real clock. You guys don't have this clock. You're the Mac. We're the Big Ten. We have real clocks around here. It's like, does anybody else have this clock? And do we need to know about this for any other leagues or conferences or is the xfl using this who all who all has the super duper secret clocks nfl better and when do we get to know about them and how if they work or not we just trust that the one we're looking at in real time is the right one i don't know do the refs have somebody in their ear saying super duper clocks two seconds off and then they have to read is that when they have to recalibrate the clock you're like how am i supposed to know when he touches the ball yeah none of us know dan let's move along let's talk about football shall we matthew stafford obviously dan in australia taking on Brock Purdy down in Australia.
1:24:13Pat McAfee:We haven't really chitchatted about much about, you know, how this affects the offense, how this affects the game, the travel and when they travel and how they travel. Can you just, Hook is playing. Should we just expect primetime Pro Bowl Matthew Stafford week one there, MVP Matthew Stafford week one, or is there a rollout process that has to happen for every single team? No, I think that you expect this offense to kind of pick up where it was last year. This offensive line is intact. The perimeter players are healthy. Both backs are healthy. And Matthew, obviously, has had a healthy offseason in comparison to last year.
1:24:46So, yeah, I fully expect this offense to play the way we're accustomed to it now. San Francisco, obviously, a very good defense and very talented defense. We'll see what Bosa's like coming back from the injury. Mikel Williams, his impact on their defense. Fred Warner being back. But, yeah, I expect this Rams offense to kind of click on all cylinders. The travel thing, I can't tell you whether that'll impact them or not. I know this. You guys probably have as well. I've gone to London a couple times. I'm not saying they're the same. I remember a time we went to London. We were playing the Chiefs.
1:25:22So this is probably like 2015, maybe, maybe 16. And we went out there. I was with Detroit. This was our third or fourth time going out there. We went out there five or six days before, did the whole getting accustomed to thing. we stayed blah blah blah all that the Chiefs flew in and landed sometime like Saturday night at like six they did a walkthrough at Wembley and I was thinking to myself we're gonna destroy them tomorrow morning they just flew over here they have no shot they beat us like 45 to 10 it was an absolute beat down and they were they were significantly crisper than us so you know my brain at that moment was like oh our travel advantage is you know big and that was the alternative so i don't know how much it'll impact or not impact i have no clue you talk about the
1:26:13Pat McAfee:london trips there isn't 100 science or either because then there'll be another team that travels out there earlier they gotta they'd played well so it's like yeah i don't know if there is a right answer all i do know is coming back you still have 16 more games so coming back i think is what everybody is probably more worried about than maybe just one game here to lead this whole thing off But what should we expect from Brock Purdy in the offense? Nobody really talks about that. Schefter said he can't put his name and reputation on the line and say that George Kittle's playing. He said, I can't say that.
1:26:42Pat McAfee:It's like, well, he flew to Australia. Okay, if he was worried about recovery or rehab, maybe. Hey, what's up, lad? What's up, lad? Who's behind you right there? There's a boy. There's a boy behind you, other side. Other side. That's the goat. That's Madden. Madden, what up? Oh, I took a shirt down. Madden. Mr. Pat said hello. Hello, Mr. Madden. He said, hey. Hey, man. You're doing good, Mr. Madden. What are you looking for, bro? Yeah, what's going on? What do we got going on, man? A father who's around, maybe? Oh, jeez. He's looking. Jeez Louise. There's no reason for that. Guys, always. What do you say?
1:27:16Well, yeah, me too.
1:27:17Pat McAfee:I mean, you're kind of taking a shot at me there as well. We don't need to be. Jeez, me too. Yeah, we. Hey, listen. I miss you, kids. I love you, kids. I love you. I love you, McKenzie. You can't make freaking jokes on this show anymore, guys. Bye. What are you saying is you don't pay attention to your kids. I know you do. Okay, so we know you do. But certainly an angle that could be had as we head to football season here. Obviously all, you know, trying to do what we're trying to do. Okay, let's get to San Francisco 49ers. We haven't really heard much about the offense. We talked to Brock Purdy about his John Deere partnership.
1:27:48Pat McAfee:Yep. Okay, which is obviously a huge deal that Deere isn't being stamped on anybody. Brock Purdy now considered a vet in the league. I think all the questions about whether or not he's going to be able to make it, even whenever he was playing good if that kind of been answered. What should we expect from this particular offense? Debo's back over there. We assume Kittle's going to play. Yeah, Purdy's a stud. Let's live in the world where Kittle plays. Obviously, Kittle's their go-to guy. The guy that you guys are watching, Stribling, is an absolute stud. I remember watching him in the college football playoff last year.
1:28:19I think it was, was it the Georgia game that he was just absolutely dominant in? and just going, this Stribling guy is phenomenal. I mean, just the way he plucks the football, the strength that he plays with, he's got a little, watching him in San Francisco, and maybe it's the number, there's a little crab tree to him in regards to just the strength that he plays with. So I think he's going to be their go-to wide receiver pass catcher. Remember, Ricky Pearsall, no. Jennings is gone. So he's kind of their go-to pass catcher, I would say. I think Debo McCaffrey's still going to be a bunch of touches, guys.
1:28:52the big question mark for me and it maybe isn't going to be the biggest answer week one against if Donald plays this defensive line but they really have to get back to running the football better in San Francisco that offensive line for years had been a strength I would tell you had become a weakness over the last two seasons it was a little bit better last year than it was in 24 um I would also tell you Kyle always always does a good job against the Rams because they know each other so well. So there might be people going into this game thinking one sided, you know, question marks health wise for the 49ers Rams are loaded.
1:29:30I don't brought by to that. I think Kyle Shannon's too good of a coach.
1:29:33Pat McAfee:Okay. That's Thursday, 820 on Netflix live from the Melbourne Cricket Grounds, the home of the Collingwood Magpies. You see the boys walked into the other night, got a chance to experience it. I've had a chance to go to one of those games. An Aussie rules football game has a soccer atmosphere, you know, because it's a lot of passive stuff. And then there's a lot of beers. I mean, a lot of beers. I forget the name of the beer that I was drinking down, but I know... Foster's? Foster's.
1:30:00Darius Butler:Australia for beer? I don't think they're drinking that. They don't mess with Foster's.
1:30:04Pat McAfee:Yeah, I don't think they're drinking that, Dan. I think that's for the Americans to just say, oh, I've been down all day. And it's so far away, they thought nobody would ever find out. I don't think it is getting drunk. Not where I was at, at least, in Brisbane. but yeah the lads got a chance to experience it that the melbourne cricket grounds gigantic a lot of investment and i think it's going to provide a great environment for american football now i am worried about how wide and big the field is are the guys going to be like are the fans too far away almost i don't know how they're going to feel like a baseball like we're in college exactly like an awkwardly placed game you know and like when hockey plays inside of a state and how there's a lot of space between the crowd.
1:30:46Pat McAfee:I'll be intrigued to see what that spacing looks like, but it should be electrifying. 8-20 on Thursday. Now, Wednesday night is when the season kicks off with the Super Bowl champs, and go ahead, Conman. Yeah, Dano, I know you think the Patriots are going 9-8 or 10-7, and the Bills are going to win the division, but it all starts on Wednesday, and they can kind of flip that narrative around. How do you see Wednesday night going? I know for the Seahawks, they have first-time OC and play caller Brian Fleury. Nobody seems to know anything about this guy so that'll be interesting to see what are kind of the biggest things you're looking at on both sides of the ball for New England and Seattle as they both start their new campaigns back to the Super Bowl yeah number one does Gonzalez play I would assume he does and Sheffield might know more but I would assume he does and if he does because in let's say they do not get a contract done by Wednesday I think the number one thing I'm doing if I'm Seattle offensively is how much are you willing to tackle on the perimeter knowing you haven't gotten your money yet and because i i grew up um with a coach that um subscribed to the philosophy that if you were playing against a premier cover corner the first thing you do to start those games is to see how much that cover corner wants to tackle so i'm taking that same philosophy we used to do this with like Antonio Cromartie all the time.
1:32:10Great corner. How much do you want to tackle today? And so how many different ways can we kick screens out there and have a tackle go to block him? How many different ways can we go crack toss? And so I think that's something to pay attention to in this game, number one, is how Seattle treats him. I think the second thing, Connor, and I would say going back, I went last week and re-watched the Super Bowl. We probably didn't give enough credit. that defense in New England in that game was sensational. And it got overshadowed by how good Seattle's defense was in that game. But you watch that game and you're like, my goodness, New England's defense was sensational, man.
1:32:46And they flew to the football. They gave up, obviously, those two big runs versus some motion look that was a little bit different. But other than that, they were great, man. And so I fully expect this defense to play a similar style. I'm with you on Fleury. It's something I've talked about all offseason. he's been around football a long time he's been around the shanahan tree a long time never called place and you're replacing a guy that got the head coaching job for the organization who had the number one pick looking for a quarterback because he was so good at calling plays i just don't think that happens like that and so i think there's big question marks for seattle's offense in regards to that um and i like i like that this i haven't picked made a pick yet but I absolutely could see New England going out there and winning this football game.
1:33:34Pat McAfee:It's interesting because Sam Darnold with KOC, great. Kubiak, great. New OC, we shall see, right? Like what Sam Darnold is. We assume that he's incredible. Deebot has something.
1:33:45Adam Schefter:Yeah, not a new OC. Josh McDaniels has won a ton of Super Bowl, has a ton of success. How do you think this Patriots offense looks with A.J. Breck? As soon as that signing was made, you instantly compared him to Gronk in those matchups. And McDaniels kind of came out and said the same thing. So how do you envision this offense working with the addition of A.J. Brown? Yeah, I want to get your perspective on this. Again, rewatching the Super Bowl, and we're going to touch on this a little bit with live and some tape. So one of the things that I saw in that game in the Super Bowl was the pressures, the blitzes that Witherspoon and all those sacks were coming from, a lot of them came from the field.
1:34:20And so they would blitz the field, D-butt, and then they would kind of shade to the boundary. So they would play some tight coverage to the boundary receiver. And that safety would shade. It was a lot of times it was Keishon Booty shade towards that side. And so you're pressuring from the field. You're almost double teaming backside, which is a lot of times the easier throw for the quarterback. Get the ball to my hand, shorter throw. And so I'm interested to see if that is something Seattle does again. Like does New England put AJ to the field? And so that gives him a, because if you're going to shade backside to a Romeo Dobbs, can A.J.
1:34:54win to the field a ton versus some one-on-one coverage with maybe not as much help. So I think that'll be interesting. For me, the number one thing I'll look for from a New England perspective is where they're putting A.J. in maybe some of those pressure situations to see how Seattle defensively reacts. How would you do it?
1:35:13Adam Schefter:I mean, that's kind of been always McDaniel Super Bowl. You say, how would I do it defensively or if I'm offense?
1:35:19Pat McAfee:Defensively. Yeah, exactly.
1:35:21Adam Schefter:Defensively, you got to take away A.J. First and foremost. And whether that's putting the highest paid corner in the league on him and being good and living with that matchup or doubling the old school Belichick, double A.J., and then put a one-on-one away. So that's how I would do it. But you got to take away A.J. You got to make Romeo beat you. You got to make Hunter Henry beat you. And then without Henderson, I don't expect him to be out there. You got to make the other backs beat you as well when it comes to coverage in those matchups. But you have to, have to take away A.J. He is an absolute game wrecker.
1:35:51Adam Schefter:And coming into that game, you got to come in and say, hey, we can't let this guy beat us.
1:35:55Pat McAfee:I love that we're starting the season with a Super Bowl rematch. Yeah. So many question marks. And I appreciated your take on how we should maybe see how Gonzo's feeling about beating a New England Patriot right now. Good point. Set hot. Yeah, we're running way outside, bro. We're running way outside. Set hot. Way out there, bro. You're going fucking straight out there. No upside. Yep. Go ahead. How much you want to tackle, bud? Set hot. Go ahead. Go ahead. And here comes Bobby Spillane. Set up. He ain't getting a big pitch out there. Let's just go. Actually, they might run, what's that called, bucket?
1:36:28Pat McAfee:When you run or when you have all the. Tunnel screen. What's it called? When, like, the offensive linemen are pulling? No, when the offensive linemen are lined up out there. It's like on. Yeah, like diamond or something. Model huddle. Set up. Let's go. Let's see if this guy, because he is an active participant when it comes to tackling. Yeah, he's always been unbelievable and everything like that. like he will come up and he'll lay the wood whenever it needs to be done but it is a question you know that's a real thing that i didn't really consider dan yeah until dan said it i was like oh my god this is how this carries into actual football here now you know pay him his money
1:37:02Adam Schefter:damn it it'd be flurry it's just the game plan right now yeah that's how that's how we used to do it with like you know we used to play against rebus and from ardy yeah it'd be like all right a lot of times it would be the offensive lineman going out first. We would send perimeter screens out there. The tackle would go and be like, all right. How much do you really – Oh, great night.
1:37:26Pat McAfee:Gonzo's going to show up. Gonzo's going to show up. And he's always been pretty adamant like, hey, every single day. You were just mentioning, be where your feet are. He is in it every single day, and that's been his answer to everything. And also, they have added some really, really good pieces on defense. Kevin Byard, hopefully he can fill that hole. but just pay that man his money. He deserves 130 whatever millions that he wants to have. Just give it to him. Do you guys have that? Do you have it available? Well, we have a quarterback who's getting paid like the eighth least amount in the entire league because he's still on his rookie contract and he's getting paid a ton of money probably coming up soon here.
1:38:02So, yeah, we have the money to pay him. So just freaking do it already, Bob.
1:38:05Pat McAfee:Okay, those are the opening two nights of the NFL season. We can't wait to watch. We're thankful it's here. Obviously, college football has done a great job. but storyline still kind of bringing it. It was announced that Tua will be the starting quarterback for Atlanta. AJ has a question about that. Yeah, Dan, obviously Tua is traveling to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers. I guess what are your expectations from Tua? How long do you think he is in the lineup? And I guess, yeah, what would you do if you were a D coordinator playing against Tua? Yeah, I would play everything short to deep. If you watched Tua last year and then certainly in the preseason, the ball's coming out quickly and there's not a willingness to push the ball downfield that much I think part of it is just because there's a reality and I've been a Tua supporter and I love them but these hits and these injuries add up you know and so we've seen some older quarterbacks get to the point where they never want to get touched I get it I think Tua is probably in that world right now so you know Patrick Graham is the defensive coordinator for the Steelers he's a guy that has kind of played defense in so many different styles he's been a zone guy he's been an aggressive guy he's been a match guy so there's a little bit of trying to figure out exactly who will be in Pittsburgh with their personnel from a you know how they'll attack Atlanta's offensive group but I think it's this was the inevitable I would tell you this is probably feels like it's a week-to-week thing until Michael Penix fully like fully says yes I can I can go out there and play a football game on that knee and if two was playing well enough he'll keep the job and if he's not the job will go to michael pennix i've been adamant i don't the either of these guys has to play so far above their skis to be part of the conversation of the future in atlanta that um you know i think it's more than likely we see at least both of them in atlanta and we'll see kind of who can do the most with the opportunity.
1:40:01Pat McAfee:Tua, starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. I guess this puts to bed the final quarterback competition that was taking place. Cooper Cush, Cooper Rush will be the backup quarterback. Penix, we assume, third. Jack Strand lingering, obviously, down there. Obviously, it's been six different quarterbacks in six different seasons for the Atlanta Falcons, obviously looking for some stability. The other quarterback competition of the offseason that garnered a lot of headlines and conversation, Kyler Murray, starting quarterback of the Vikings, where do you sit right now with this? Because it was loud at the time, and then, you know, who knows who ends up where.
1:40:34Pat McAfee:But Kyler Murray being named starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, where do you sit as we're just days away from getting to watch that for the first time? Yeah, if Kyler is able to put some consistency together that resembled the start of his 2024 season, the Vikings are contenders to win the division. They're that good of a football team. They're three deep at wide receiver. Hawkinson's a stud I've said this I believe this is the easiest place to play quarterback in the NFC outside of Los Angeles Rams because of those pieces I mentioned the play caller the run game Flores's defense will be great Harrison Smith I heard you guys talking about before somehow still playing football and probably playing at a high level dude's so good at ball um my question mark with Kyler, I've kind of talked about this, is how much Kyler's willing to allow the scheme to be the star and not him to be the playmaker.
1:41:27He's obviously going to make plays at times, but this scheme is built upon just allow the play design to get the guy open. I'll get him open. You know why I'm getting him open. Cut it loose. And how much they can build some of those throwing lanes in you can't run an offense that wants to attack the middle of the field okay let me i'll say it this way please please say it say it this way okay when you have an offense that is a play action pass centric offense and it's predicated upon the run and that run action looking similar you have to be able to work the middle of the field in the pass game you have to have the people you have to have the quarterback you have to have the protection and so if if you're going to have that be your foundational part.
1:42:11Throwing the ball to just a perimeter is not real life. Those two things do not exist at the same time. And so I think how comfortable O 'Connell gets with building some passing lanes in in that play-action pass world, how comfortable Kyler gets seeing it, and it's a little bit in the Purdy world. Purdy's got the capability of it because of the touch he has on his throws. Rock can throw to guys before they're there. He throws to blind spots. Kyler doesn't have a ton in his game of throwing blind, throwing to blind spots. And that's something that just takes a ton of comfort level. We've talked about it with Stroud.
1:42:48You know, when you're throwing the ball over the middle of the field, your margin for error is small because I sail it, it's picked. I'm low, it's picked. Outside, I can sail it, it's incomplete. Low, it's incomplete. And so how comfortable Kyler gets with that and how well they can build some vision or throwing lanes in, I think is really the biggest question mark.
1:43:08Pat McAfee:Tyler and Kevin O 'Connell operating an offense as opposed to star operating plays. And Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams, right? Aren't we all kind of watching the same thing here? Caleb Williams is able to win games for him at the end just because he's Caleb Williams. He's so talented. Is he going to, to the way you described it, will Caleb let the offense be the star and then him be the operator of it? Because that's what Jared Goff was in the Ben Johnson offense and we saw maybe the best offense in all of ball. Ben Johnson was hired to be the head coach because of how great he was at offense.
1:43:37Pat McAfee:Everybody wanted to hire him as a head coach because of that. So if we can see Caleb Williams get into that offense, we can assume potential record-breaking numbers. Like Heath said, we would like to be the highest scoring offense in history. That would be the offense taking the lead there, right? And Caleb just kind of being the choo-choo conductor of that entire thing? 100%. I've said this with Caleb. It is a fine line with these guys because you never want to get them to be statue-just pocket quarterbacks that aren't creative. And so you never want to take that stinger away from them. But there is a rhythm to the offense.
1:44:10And a lot of times you can fall in love with some of the splash plays and think they're going to be sustainable. And, you know, you're the Patrick Mahomes of the world because Patrick did it. But it's a different game than when Patrick was doing it as well five, six years ago. And I think some of the things that gets lost in it is when we're talking about the timing and rhythm of the play, it's not just the quarterback. There's a timing and rhythm of it for the offensive line. The offensive line knows there's a very specific place the quarterback is going to throw the football from. So they know that where they can get beat and where they can't get beat.
1:44:45When should they expect the ball out of the quarterback's hands? The spacing of the routes. If I'm starting frontside with the route, the spacing of those backside concepts and how the timing of that matters. If a receiver gets, if he's supposed to be 18 yards on the in route backside and you, the quarterback, are still on the front side and he's crossing the field at 18 yards already, well, we've lost the timing in the spacing of the play. So, you know, I think that there's, those are all things when we talk about like timing and rhythm, it's not just about quarterback and only throw.
1:45:19Pat McAfee:A lot of phenomenal offensive systems in that NFC North. And if Chicago just keeps going the way it's going. We're in games.
1:45:26Adam Schefter:It might be, what's that? You got to have the run. Ben Johnson, he has like his run game design is crazy. And marrying that up with the pass, because Dan just kind of mentioned, defenses has changed. Defenses have become more patient. They've kind of become more dynamic as well. So to kind of throw you off that rhythm or get you kind of more early into that second reaction play, and yeah, you can run a whole, you know, B-roll of highlights for him, but it'll also be a B-roll of turnovers or big-time plays. It's kind of just ruined games. So the more you can stay in that system. But once again, with Kyler and Caleb, you don't want to take away that sting.
1:45:58Adam Schefter:It's the reason why these guys are number one overall picks. They have the arm talent. They have the ability with their legs. So it is kind of like finding that perfect balance where, you know, getting yourself in a position to win a ballgame.
1:46:08Pat McAfee:Man, the NFC North could be explosive. Oh, yeah. I mean, there is a lot of great offensive minds up there, if you count MCDC as well because – Oh, yeah. Definitely. Oh, yeah. Drew Pettig is one of the best. I would like to let you know that, like, if Chicago becomes the sports town again, that could be tough for the rest of the United States of America to have to kind of deal with. Caleb's out there with Chicago Bulls, PCA. They're there for the next 15 years, right? Oh, yeah. I mean, this is a long time, potentially, if a lot of success takes. Absolutely love this. This is a great one. This is why I like the Tyrese Halliburton charity softball game because it was like Daniel Jones was out there.
1:46:48Pat McAfee:Tyrese was out there. Kelsey Mitchell was out there. It's like the entire city coming together for something.
1:46:53Darius Butler:Was Tyrese here for this one?
1:46:55Pat McAfee:He threw a great pitch. Yes, he did. He was wearing his Michael Jackson loafers out there. And he went from the mound. Those are the best pitching shoes you could wear. He went from the mound, and he delivered that thing. And I think he was pretty pumped up about that. He should be. Yeah, especially with the entire storyline about the Brewers and how that whole thing went down. I guess he was supposed to do it. Then he was rescinded. Got the loafers with the team. This is the most Tyrese Halliburton look I've ever seen. And he throws a little bit high, but I think the batter's swinging at that, a strike.
1:47:19Pat McAfee:So shout out to Tyrese doing that. The Cubs are kind of the fun bunch to follow along with. Yeah, five to W. And this PCA character.
1:47:28Darius Butler:Yeah, right, dude. 40 home runs now, I think? Yeah. Is he the MVP? Yes.
1:47:32Pat McAfee:He has 40 and 30. I think it's the first time, obviously, in Cubs history or something like that. But it's like the shit that's happening. Every night he's just doing something that is a once-a-week type highlight. He's doing it every single night somewhere. The ball is a magnet to him somehow. He's just making plays. Can we fill that in? We need to fill that space in. I don't understand this. Why is there a gap right there between the LED and the wall? Home field advantage. You also got to remember that extra strip right there from our understanding of LED prices. That's maybe an extra$750 ,000.
1:48:02Pat McAfee:We might have literally ran out of the budget there. We'll just hope nobody will end up directly in there. Maybe the MVP will. He's special to watch. Are the Cubs or NL or AO? NL. Come on. Who would be the contender for MVP up against him? Shohei or Tawny. but that's done. He hasn't played like two weeks, so PCA is going to be the MVP. And then who's the AL MVP favorite? Probably Jordan Alvarez. Roman Anthony. Jordan Alvarez, minus 5 ,000. Junior Caminero, plus 1 ,400. Bobby Wolt Jr., plus 7 ,500. Here's Pete Alonzo, the polar bear. He's in... Started to rank a bit lately. He's in MVP conversations in 2026.
1:48:42Pat McAfee:Let's go, Pete. We're bringing this? He's on the list.
1:48:45Darius Butler:I mean, yeah, but... You're not giving an MVP to, you know, a 500 team. He just can't do that. Yo, Ty, how come – doesn't Schwarber have, like, 500 home runs? Yeah. He had a bunch early, and then he kind of cooled out. PCA is having just a – he's having a ridiculous season, and what he does in the field, too. I mean, they don't really give a shit about that, but, like, he's on –
1:49:06Pat McAfee:He's having a historic season. Yeah. Almost like Cal Raleigh was having last year. Yeah, how's he doing this year? He's coming on. He's been hot. He's been hot. He's coming on. He's like 20 of his last 28, and it raised his average from 143 to 161. Hey, Ty did not want this guy to win the MVP last year. He was doing all this historic stuff. One, because Judgey was involved, but also Ty was like, can't just have like one year, good year, rest of career, bad MVP winners. Well, he had basically the same stats as Judge, and Judge's batting average was 90 points higher. That was kind of my point of contention.
1:49:43Pat McAfee:But also, you didn't like the one-hit wonder potential possibility here for an MVP award. No, my big thing was people were starting to put him in the same category as Judge. And I said, well, Judge has done it for about a decade in a row. So I'd like to see this guy do it again next year because for his career, he's about a 220 hitter. So I'd like to see him replicate it. And he had the worst drop-off in the history of baseball. But he's bounced back. Not yet. He's bounced back. A little bit. First 94 games, he batted 156. Holy shit. 273. which I certainly know what all three of those numbers are.
1:50:16Pat McAfee:And then the last 13 games, he's batting 320. Well, that's a pretty good disparity. You know, 94 games, 13 games. You know, you pay this guy a bunch of money. You expect him to kind of be a driving force. They went to the ALCS last year. Yeah, great two weeks, even though you're not going to make the playoffs. And, you know, he kind of tanked the whole season. What? I like Cal Raleigh. He should have dapped up his boy at the World Baseball Classic. You're right. Baseball guys didn't love that. Oh, he was pulling for America. Sorry, Sewell. That's why.
1:50:49Darius Butler:D-Roll probably told him not to, actually. I forgot.
1:50:53Pat McAfee:Okay, that's World Baseball Classic fodder for sure. Cal Raleigh, we appreciate everything you did for sport last year and for our show. Thank you, dude. But Ty was pretty excited to see him not play good after everybody was saying he was judging. You were. I wouldn't say I. You were pretty judgy about Cal Raleigh being judged alongside judging. I think I was more patting myself on the back, like, okay, yeah, I actually do know ball a little bit when it comes to baseball. Talking about Aaron Judge, the greatest right-hand hitter of all time, and Cal Rowley has one good year. Then we're saying, this guy's the best player ever.
1:51:21I said, let's pump the brakes. Let's pump the brakes a little bit. He had a great year. Let's see him do it again next year. And, you know, we saw what he did. 13 games, though. He's last 13. He's last 13. He's hot.
1:51:33Pat McAfee:Okay, and speaking of knowing ball, it is nice college game days back. You know? Got a lot of people telling me in real time, I don't know ball for the things I'm saying. And then all of a sudden, as the day rolls on, it's like, hold the phone now. Hold the phone. Maybe we have a free. Had a great game day. Great. Unbelievable. I mean, great game. If that's how it's going to be every single week, first of all, shout out to all of us diving into college football a lot more, you know, because of everything. Tone, research, unbelievable that you're providing all of us and to me. But that was fun to get back in there and just take the heat again.
1:52:06Pat McAfee:You know, you pick against a team. It's like, oh, I forgot this is that threat season. Very passionate. Yeah, they are very, very upset. And it's like, I got to remember that whenever I'm talking, that I like both teams. But I am picking one to beat the other with no clue what's going to actually happen. That's an interesting predicament to be back in. I enjoyed it. Same for you, Dano. It's football season again. Take your swings, man. Take your swings. Gotta hop in. Take your swings. Gotta hop in there. How about Lainey Wilson coming on the show and say she might have fancied some of the music?
1:52:36Pat McAfee:Hey, how about that? Blake Shelton, Lainey, some other people that are pretty good. That was very nice of them. That was a nice boost. Laney, new ball, too. Yes, you did. New ball. Yes, you did. I got a call the night before from Duck. You know, nice FaceTime from Duck. He says, hey, you're looking for a what here? Now, a group of six? You need six teams? What do you need here? Duck is awesome. It was great to see him. Theo was there. Jordan Davis was there. I mean, you talk about everybody in. The lads. Everybody. Actually, everybody was there. It was a long day of work for you guys, man. Fun, though, you know.
1:53:08Pat McAfee:Football's back. That's what everybody talks about. People are either excited for all the opportunities that we're getting, which is very cool of people to be like that. We're all living our dreams, obviously, in real time, no matter how often it happens and doesn't happen. Or there's people that think, you know, I hate seeing this guy everywhere. And then there's people that think I'm going to die. It's like, man, the energy I got from football happening is just a completely different level. We are so thankful and lucky to be in the middle of football season and to cover it the way that we do.
1:53:34Pat McAfee:That's Dan Orlovsky. That's AJ Hawk. We'll be back tomorrow here on ESPN. We hope you have the incredible Labor Day as football continues to be fantastic. Be a friend. Tell a friend something nice. It might change your life. We'll see you tomorrow. Goodbye. Way to go, Dan. That was a good throw in there. Hey, baby. Dan, all. Hang 10, bro. And I think you have that. We're still live. We're still live, Dan. I think you have a golf club. Is that a golf course on your hat? Feels like these people are infiltrating the show, right? The onion. Yeah, we had someone else with the onion thing on. Really?
1:54:03Yeah, the shirt. It's a golf course, right? That's an O 'Hoopy? Yeah, it's called A Hoopy Match Club down there. Oh, so. Vidalia, Georgia.
1:54:10Pat McAfee:Yeah, so everybody's sick. McElroy was wearing it. Yeah, everybody's kind of. That's right. Okay, so you guys went on the same trip down there, or different trips. Did you guys play together? I don't believe I've been down there with Greg, no. Oh, you don't like Greg? Did you win your match? Did I win my match against Greg or when I was down there? No, when you were down there. No, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I've played well down there for the most part. I've lost a couple times down there as well, but I've never played with McElroy, no. Okay. I was going to say, you've read with McElroy. The place is great, dude.
1:54:40The place is a very fun golf experience. Very fun.
1:54:44Pat McAfee:Yeah, we didn't know it existed before last week. Now everybody's coming on here just propagandizing it onto everybody. The guy has African safari animals on property. Sick. The guy who founded the place, his name is Mike Walrath. He loves golf and safaris, and so he has like African safari animal on property. And then if I'm - Hold on, hold on, hold the phone. Hold the phone. Let's not move along anymore. Let's stop right here, okay? Stop right here. So it's only match play. They don't keep score, okay? You're just playing against somebody. I won this hole, you won this hole. And you get to at every hole declare, like there's T's, but there's no T markers.
1:55:27So you could put the ball down on the tee box and you say, we're playing this as a par three from 340 yards. Love that.
1:55:34Pat McAfee:Okay, so you're kind of picking and choosing what you want to compete against. Okay, let's do this. We're all doing the same thing. That is awesome. And then you pick your head up from putting your tee down. King of the fucking jungles right here? Is that what's happening? Off-leash. How do I? Because we got a couple of them running around Indiana, I think, still. I'm not 100 % sure. Oh, there's a Raya. Alright, there's baby Raya right there. Okay, that's cool. Giraffe? I'm seeing zebras on the internet. yeah the giraffe thing is interesting because if i'm correct they have like sporadically placed out on the property i believe like 50 foot tall metal poles because of the weather and the thunderstorms that come through they needed things higher than the giraffe that when the lightning comes it grabs the pole and not the giraffe oh we're looking out for the drafts it can still grab the giraffe certainly yeah yeah i mean i've seen videos of somebody just sitting down on the ground.
1:56:28Darius Butler:Yeah, a lot of those. Some guy this weekend, actually, walking down the street. Spent the rest of the weekend in the hospital.
1:56:34Pat McAfee:I had a teammate in college, got hit twice. Bad luck. In the same day? And were thumbs up with him? Well, his skin, you can tell by his skin, it was a little bit different, but I think he got hit twice. Once in high school before I met him, and then once after. Lucky guy. What a legend. Did it change him? Did it change him at all? I think, if I The superhero now. Yeah. Electro man. He can fly. Fantastic four. I mean, just the percentages of that potentially happening are obviously crazy. It scars, but to your point, it does scar your... Yeah, I think your body gets a little bit. I think it does change your skin or something.
1:57:10Do people hunt those animals down there, Dan? Do they pay a bunch of money to shoot those things?
1:57:13Pat McAfee:All right, I'll play golf and I need a shotgun or rifle. I don't know that answer. I don't know if it's a yes or no. That's a dangerous game. All right, I want 36 holes and I need bow and arrow. Okay, and I would like a – what are those? Wide tip. What do they have? I mean, this is real. What is down there roaming the property? I saw zebras, actually. I just Googled it because it was so fascinating. I don't think you're killing them. He loves these. Safaris are picture-taking. Remember, hunting trips are shooting. Hippos and a water hazard. Oh, the hippos will fuck you up, too. They kill more cubans a year than sharks.
1:57:51Fact. Hey, get and put the ball in the water to the right. You're dancing with destiny there. Or it could spit the ball out into the hole. Oh, like it lights you. Yeah. Like mini golf? Yeah. Yeah. Hungry hippos. Hungry hippos.
1:58:06Pat McAfee:Maybe you hit it off a draft's head. Bang. Rolls down neck. Right off shoulder. Into hole. Mini golf. That one. Brees in the trees. Yeah. Out of bounds. Nope. Catches your ball. Fair wave. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, my God. I need the food at the place, man. The food is just. Yeah, we're feeding. Chomping cats. Yeah, of course. we gotta have lunch yeah we understand this place is awesome yeah we need to get to the onion did i know i did existed just a few days ago and now i what's it called georgia
1:58:40a hoopie a hoopie match play oh hoopie is it public are we supposed to be talking about it
1:58:46Pat McAfee:as much as we're talking about it i don't know very private okay well i i don't know that answer Hopefully it's okay. That sounds like a U problem. Should not have been doing that, Dano. Sounds like Augusta to Ohupie was the order of privacy. Yeah, privacy. Illustrious golf courses in Georgia. That's how it sounded. We'd like to let everybody know that Dan Orlovsky is the one that started talking about this. And on that note, Dan, we can't wait to listen to you talk about everything this fall. Football season has arrived. Happy Labor Day. Please tell the family to say hello, and we will talk to you soon, Dano.
1:59:18Pat McAfee:Maybe. Unless the Ohupie people. Yeah, true. Yeah. send a tiger to your house. I love you, Hubie. Love you. Love you, Dave. Thanks, boys. Love you, Dano. Love you, Dano. You know, it's like, what do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger? Do they dream of Molling Zebra? Or Dan Orlovsky in a Catwoman suit? We don't know. Don't you worry, pretty tiger head, we're gonna get you back to Dyson and your cozy tiger bed And then we're gonna find Our best friend Doug And we're gonna give him A best friend hug Doug Doug Doug Doug Doug Doug And if you get murdered By crystal meth tweakers Then Shit out of luck Great movie Hangover?
2:00:20Adam Schefter:heard of it definitely watch hangover i didn't know that song yeah yeah it's one tyson's tiger yep yep after they give him all the uh right before tattoo on his face and he's saying he's pissed off and give him all the drugs again yeah great movie great movie at helms rady cooper yep gal finanski paging doctor nailed it yeah cooper back it up it's galvanaski we'll be back on the other side galifanasky still one of the best stand-up things i've ever seen is him at the
2:00:51Pat McAfee:purple thing yeah cheeseburger guy in the front row you're not supposed to be here why'd you come here two people won some free tickets to the show they had no idea who he was and if you did not know who he was and you were to show up at a comedy place and the shit he does he's just fucking outrageous. Got a piano out there. Drinking. You know, people are just too old. People thought they got tickets to a free comedy show. They walked in there.
2:01:18Adam Schefter:Good time.
2:01:19Pat McAfee:Front fucking row.
2:01:20Adam Schefter:Fast body beat.
2:01:21Pat McAfee:Well, for him too. He said they were killing him. Just no reaction. He said, you're killing the entire show. And they kept it all in. It was unbelievable. Guy's a genius. Where's he been? He does a gardening show on Netflix. Exactly. Okay. Yes, he does. Need to check that out. Yeah. Yeah, he goes around to different farms and gardens. Galifianakis got a huge brain in there. Yeah, he does. Gigantic brain there we're looking for. His cousin, Blue, called his mascot.
2:01:53Darius Butler:No shit. What? What's that? Galifianakis? The mascot or the guy inside of it? The mascot. What do you mean?
2:02:00Pat McAfee:They're about the same, bro. What are you talking about? I don't know. What you're talking about? Like the character or the... Both. You know, the flesh and bones. I'm talking Blue. The Colts mascot. Yep. Galifianakis' cousin. Man, I learn something new every day. That's awesome. That's right. Big brain there as well. Sure. So many ideas. 13 years of them, right? 13 years. Blue created Blue. Like came up with the concept, pitched, blue, now trick shot artist. Was there no mascot before blue? Yeah, blue came in really.
2:02:35Darius Butler:Life was better then. Yeah, that's when they won.
2:02:37Pat McAfee:Don't you say that. That's actually a bad problem. You're talking about Steely McBeam. That's what you're talking about. He's not real either. Steely McBeam came into Pittsburgh at a time where Pittsburgh what? Yeah, right. Fuck this guy. Like, no, we got a mascot now. It's like, no, we don't. I think we threw him off a bridge to be honest. Was Blue the mascot? No, Steely McBeam's still around.
2:02:57Darius Butler:I'm pretty sure we threw him off a bridge. He came into the suite when we went to that Steelers game. That duck started.
2:03:03Pat McAfee:Here he is. Pittsburgh dad, Steely McBeam. That's a good car. I don't know if I've ever seen that guy. Me either. What are you talking about? You've never seen Steely McBeam? No. He's a great mascot. He's not Jack's him DeVille. No. Is he always carrying those beams around? He is. Always.
2:03:20Darius Butler:He doesn't have a very large game day presence, I will say that. They kind of keep them in the back.
2:03:24Pat McAfee:Somebody pitched Steely McBeam and the Steelers having a mascot. Then it was passed somehow.
2:03:31Darius Butler:I don't know.
2:03:31Pat McAfee:And then it does feel like a lot of people that are probably within the Steelers organization are like, everybody we surround ourselves away from this building have told us that they're pissed that there's a fucking mascot for the Pittsburgh Steelers. So let's hide this guy.
2:03:45Darius Butler:Yeah.
2:03:45Pat McAfee:Okay, we got him, but let's hide him. He's out there doing it, though.
2:03:48Darius Butler:He can do corporate events and bullshit like that, but he's not there on game day.
2:03:52Pat McAfee:I think they're actually having him do the blessed water gimmick. Oh, sure.
2:03:57Darius Butler:Oh, that's Father McClanahan. Steely's brother. That's not his name. Have the Colts won the division since Blue's been introduced?
2:04:05Pat McAfee:Yeah, Blue's been to a couple good times. No, that... It's been longer than 12 years. It's been longer than that.
2:04:13Adam Schefter:He's been a part of it. Yeah, a long time. Had a t-shirt game, for sure. Yeah, well, has he won? He won it, yes. I don't think so. if you just do the quick math.
2:04:22Pat McAfee:He's longer than 12 years. I gave the wrong number. He was around six. Yeah. Okay. Might have won a Super Bowl, actually. Free RCA dome. Yeah. Yeah, he just will. Blue don't credit. His name's Blue. I mean, let's get a little more creative. What are we doing? Jesus, dude. What do you want? You don't like the name Blue? Created the character. Call him Blue or White. We got two options. Is that it? What are we doing? No. I can't call him White. I'm Indiana. We want to call him Mr. Cream Pie? Can't do that either. I guess that's what he invented. He is a cream pie-er now. will say he's cream pie in the face cream pie in public anybody can get it did one preseason game people just walk and stand in there like this and then somehow i guess you have a good aura whenever you're about to get cream pie because everybody kind of flinches right beforehand and then boom it gets him and they never move no he's so good at it he's sneaky yeah he's sneaky sneaky Keep Blue.
2:05:18Pat McAfee:What do you want him to be called, AJ? Do you have any names? I don't know. I mean, Steely McBeamy, like something like that. Something a little more involved. Blue has like 245 appearances a year. Yeah. Okay. He dominates every single one. Steely McBeam should be taken from Blue, not the other way around. Steely sounds a little lazy. Well, no, Steely has a full-time job at the mill. And then on Sundays, he goes down to the field and represents for the staff.
2:05:46Darius Butler:He might be able to get an interception on two on Sunday.
2:05:49Pat McAfee:Oh, geez. With the beam in his hand? Yes, that's who he is. He's super yinzer. Steely McBeam. Big Mike's bringing him back for sure. Big Mike's bringing him back. What if they have – First question, Big Mike. That's what I'm saying because they have a terrible towel twirler.
2:06:05Darius Butler:What's this thing?
2:06:06Pat McAfee:Brett Michaels.
2:06:07Darius Butler:What the hell is Steely McBeam? What the hell is this thing?
2:06:10Pat McAfee:Get him in here now. What's this guy's deal? Can you imagine him asking what he can do? Like, what can you do? Talk to me, bud. We're trying to communicate. Steely McBeam doesn't talk, so I was tough. I had to talk to his handler. Handler had a bunch of ideas. What the hell? What is that? I've never seen that little one. Oh, my God. I've never seen that. He works every day at that mill. This is air? I don't want to do this anymore. I don't want to do this anymore. Oh, there's his dad. This is Tim Robinson. Take this up. Carl Hatton. Let's go to the game, Dad. Look at him, though. Every step forward takes you closer to...
2:06:47Pat McAfee:Boom. He's up.
2:06:50Darius Butler:That's the guy from Hanky Gilmore. Is that Hanky McHines? Yeah, what's his dad's name? Steely McBeam is the second. Metal McBeam. Edge only takes his nut from Brutus, so I understand his. Oh, good one. You were thinking about that one. No, it wasn't.
2:07:08Pat McAfee:He did come together, though, pretty good, I would say. I don't know when he started. Steely McBeam, though, still doing it. Let's remember that. Yeah. Represent best boss we can. And Blue.
2:07:17Darius Butler:He's not doing it.
2:07:18Pat McAfee:He's in the Hall of Fame, I think. Blue's in the Hall of Fame. Who?
2:07:20Darius Butler:Yeah. The Colts Rig of Otter? Yeah, he probably is in the Colts Rig of Otter.
2:07:24Pat McAfee:Okay, see, that's what the internet does. What does that mean? He's in the mascot Hall of Fame.
2:07:28Adam Schefter:He won the Super Bowl, too, though. Where's that? Exactly. So he came after the Super Bowl, and then we never won it since? No, he won. He was there. We should check his origin story, because if he came after the Super Bowl, and then you lost the Super Bowl, and they haven't won it. No, I didn't let him shit.
2:07:43Pat McAfee:the team I was on lost. I was just lucky to be there. Let's make sure that is known. I do not have my name mentioned alongside. You kicked it off? I did. That was pretty cool. Was Blue there for that? He fucked it up. Definitely was. Wow. Let's get to a break. I was very lucky to be on those teams. And I think Blue thinks the same way about the Colts. I think he has a pretty good little... I think he's got a good little spread. I think Blue has really...
2:08:07Darius Butler:Did he start as like a 17-year-old or is he 85 now?
2:08:10Pat McAfee:So he went to Auburn, I think, which has a mascot school.
2:08:13Darius Butler:Of course.
2:08:14Pat McAfee:From my understanding.
2:08:15Darius Butler:Warwick. Warwick.
2:08:16Pat McAfee:I think they got a lot of the mascots that you see are coming out of Auburn's mascot school. And then created and then started. Colts were a Super Bowl chance in 2006, the same year the Blues started. So maybe Blue brought a Super Bowl to that.
2:08:32Adam Schefter:We got to see. Did he come after? Or. I love him out there. Nobody hits the kids. The Colts won the Super Bowl in Blue's first season. Okay. Okay. Okay. There we have it. There we have it. So let's back. Do you have anything to say? Any video evidence of Blue anywhere near the Super Bowl or anywhere near the celebration?
2:08:51Pat McAfee:Is that what it's going to take for you to back off? Maybe. Maybe, yeah. Sounds like Blue should be the fucking GM. That's what it sounds like. Yeah. Longest tenured cult. Blue. Well, you also got the equipment lads. Sure. And the training room lads. Sure, and they probably would give Blue the... I don't think so. ...the cosign to get up into the front office. I don't know. I don't know. I think everybody's all aboard the Colts train this year that's in that building. I think everybody feels good about where we're at. Daniel Jones balling. Alec Pierce is back. Keenan Allen not giving up the number – not getting a number 13 because Treadwell said – Oh, don't love that.
2:09:28Pat McAfee:Not at all. But Keenan Allen was found inside of his car while intoxicated, so he gets charged with a operating while intoxicated. So he's not allowed to say he wants a number 13 because you immediately got into trouble as soon as you got to the city. it doesn't matter if you're a first ballot Hall of Famer or not. That's kind of how that all goes, I think. A consecutive starter at quarterback in week one for the first time in what? Ten years? Let's go Colts. That's huge. And guess who's back? Who? Blue. All right, be a friend, tell a friend. I'm nice, it might change your life. We're back on the other side.
2:09:59Pat McAfee:Take five. Five.

I've lived with OCD my entire life, and people throw the term around like it's no big deal. But OCD is severe, often debilitating. It's a mental health condition that involves unrelented, unwanted thoughts that can make you question your character, your beliefs, even your safety. General therapy can help with some things, but for OCD, it can actually make things worse. That's why I want to tell you about NoCD. 2:11:38Football!
2:11:39Pat McAfee:It's the absolute best. That's A.J. Hawk. The Toxic Tip is here at Boston Corner and at Ty Schmitt. Great to have you back, Ty. Great to be back. You are a style, Epoch. Thank you. Thank you very much. I don't know if you saw. Tone had picked up the toxicity as he sat in your seat for a couple days. It felt like he felt it a little bit. I hope you felt our love to you and everybody else. One half of the hammer. Done! Cowboys AP Tone. And he said, Tom, what's the spread tonight? What are we looking at? Obviously, Mike Norvell, a lot to do this year for FSU. And then lastly, still on an incredible build of this SMU squad that is normally pretty high-powering, fast-paced on the offensive side, definitely.
2:12:12Pat McAfee:This ACC battle, what should we be looking at as SMU or a three-point favorite?
2:12:17Darius Butler:Yeah, it's actually ticked down to two and a half. Oh, oh. Which is interesting because all of the money is on SMU. As far as the public perception right now, SMU is high. and Florida State is low coming off the last couple years. Kevin Jennings, the quarterback for SMU, has been really, really good. They have already named an athletic facility at SMU after Kevin Jennings. I don't know if he's the first athlete. Yes, they have already named a facility after Kevin Jennings. A lot of records broken. Yeah, and he hasn't even finished his senior season there yet. That's sweet. That's what we like to call a bit of a trap line in this situation, even though Rhett Lashley said this week that he has no idea why they're the favorites.
2:12:58Darius Butler:You would expect them to be 7-10 point underdogs coming in tonight. FSU has already played a game this year. They didn't look great last week, but we will see you here in their ACC debut for these two teams. Are we expecting points or not? I took the over for SMU points. They obviously, like I just said, have Kevin Jennings in there. They return a lot on offense, but they do not return a ton on defense. And Florida State's defense didn't look incredible last week. They couldn't get any pressure against New Mexico State. I think that's who it was. either New Mexico or New Mexico State. So, yeah, I'm expecting points tonight.
2:13:32Pat McAfee:54-and-a-half, I believe, is now the current line. It was 53-and-a-half when the show started. It goes up a point. The spread goes down a half a point. Interesting numbers as week one of college football season wraps up with Florida State SMU. Nine-year NFL vet Darius J. Butler is here. Yes, sir. Dee Bunch, it was great to have football back. Yes. It was great to see studs. Was there any defenses across the college landscape that deserved to be talked about a little bit more than maybe they were? How about what LSU's defense was able to do? And what was going on with the blocking there, Clemson?
2:14:00Adam Schefter:I don't understand. I was shocked. I honestly expected a decent game. I expected Clemson at least to be in it in the fourth quarter. But we expected LSU defense to be good. They kept the defensive coordinator, returned a bunch of players. But, I mean, they just looked horrible on that offense. Like they haven't practiced. Obviously, you named your starting quarterback at the 11th out. You bench him, then you go back to him. But if you can't block him up in the trenches, you can't get anything done. And it looked like for both quarterbacks, just like it was 13 guys on defense that they were facing.
2:14:30Adam Schefter:Those white jerseys were moving so fast, the environment. I mean, they were unbelievable. Right now, obviously, you know, Reese said he would have them as his number one team right now in the power rankings. It's hard to disagree with them coming out, hitting the ground running week one like they did.
2:14:44Pat McAfee:They were big, strong, and fast. Steve went to their practice, I believe, on Thursday, and he came up to me and was just like, oh. I'm like, what's that? He goes, that practice I just watched from LSU, he was like, they are so big, so fast. Everything is just so everything, everywhere. You see freaks everywhere. Every single position, they got guys. And it's not just one guy. There's two guys at every single position. He was like, I don't know how you beat them. I don't know how you beat this team. He was actually multiple times said that. And Stanford Steve gets a chance and does, thankful that he does this.
2:15:22Pat McAfee:he goes and watches these practices for all of us. You know, he gives it. That is literally what he's doing. And we appreciate him. He spends a lot of time doing a lot of this stuff for all, for a lot of other people to be good at their job. So we appreciate the hell out of him. But he was drooling. He was drooling over LSU's practice. Just like so excited to watch what they were. And he, he, on his pick, he said he picks Clemson to cover. And I was, you, so as soon as he said that, I actually like looked at him and I'm like, man, you're the one that swayed me. You're the one that swayed me into thinking that they were going to kill because everything else I'd been reading about this LSU team and then the Clemson team, it was like everything that we worked on, you put together, everything that we've been talking about, it's like every position was like they got an answer, they got an answer, they got an answer, they got an answer, they got an answer, they're faster, they're faster, they're bigger, they got more experience than the quarterback.
2:16:08Pat McAfee:I mean, Trinidad Champions, cannon, absolute cannon, fun to watch.
2:16:12Darius Butler:Made some great throws last year.
2:16:13Pat McAfee:Unbelievable. Bucket, bucket shot. There was another one for the field goal where he puts it on a line for like 35 yards. If you fell asleep, you missed an electrifying finish to Ole Miss-Louisville. That ball right there, that's getting field goal range, basically. An absolute hose. And then they get a 48-yard field goal from one. I mean, look at that ball. That spiral, absolutely tight on a dart runner's ball. He is a weapon. Trinidad Chambliss. He was at Ferris State. Okay, so Ferris State, obviously, he won the Heisman for D, whatever that is. He too, yeah. Then he gets into Charlie Weiss Jr.
2:16:44Pat McAfee:and Lane, that's the one to get in the field goal or to keep the chains moving or whatever. He plays great in big moments. He has an incredible arm. He can move. Everything you see Trinidad Chambliss do, we know, great kick here by Carnero, by the way. He missed one early. He pulled one. Very abnormal for him. Every time we watch him kick live in person, he had a pure ball. I mean, just an absolute pure ball. But if you look at just strictly what Lane Kiffin and Charlie Weiss Jr. were able to do with Trinidad Chambliss in Ole Miss, and I'm not saying that Trinidad wasn't his own talent and everything.
2:17:13Pat McAfee:If you were to pair him with Sam Levitt, it's like Sam Levitt can do everything. that Trinidad can do. And he's already taken a team to a CFP by himself with Scadaboo at Arizona State. So I was really eager to see Sam Levitt in a Lane Kiffin offense with all the weapons that they have. So I thought LSU was going to win. Not in a dominant fashion. But then whenever Steve comes and tells me, they got him. Because I thought they were limited at the top. I thought like roster. Like a crust on a cake. I thought it was really good. And then everything was going to be soft underneath it. and he was like, nah, everybody's unbelievable.
2:17:48Pat McAfee:And it's like, he swayed me into thinking they were going to kill him. I thought either 40 or 50 is what I was debating in between in the moment when I was talking there. Went with 50 just because it sounded a little bit more dramatic, I guess. Should have stuck with 40, but it felt like obvious after Steve told me they looked the part. They certainly did. They certainly looked the part across the board. Me and Gumpy got to be there taking a knee in the end zone so we don't block everybody's view. Then we were told by Miss Princess Erica at halftime. at the end of the first quarter that we're going to have to take a knee and we say, hey, we've already done it.
2:18:18Pat McAfee:We respect these people. The people that are in the stands, they've been drunk for 13, 14 hours. They're waiting. They're an unbelievable – but we got to see it, and from our perspective, they were giants, man. They all look the part.
2:18:29Darius Butler:Oh, yeah. Jordan Seaton, he was unbelievable left tackle.
2:18:33Pat McAfee:Straight out of Colorado, good transfer. How's he going to do? Great. There was obviously bobble, deflection, interception early, but that was basically the only time they were stopped. And any time Sam needed to get the edge or get a run, he did. I think I forgot how fast he was. It was – they're a problem. It's crazy to be like, is LSU going to win the fucking national championship? And he got hard SEC, obviously. SEC is difficult. They went perfect this weekend, by the way. SEC had a perfect weekend. So there's going to be a lot of conversations about that as we go forward about who has a deeper conference and everything like that.
2:19:06Pat McAfee:But it's hard not to think that after watching them do what they just did to Clemson.
2:19:09Adam Schefter:Yeah, because of all the bullshit that was happening offseason with the pros and the court cases. You forget that Lane Kiffin is a hell of a ball coach. You think about the quarterback, you think about these high-powered offense when you think Lane Kiffin, but he always wins in the trenches. That's how he builds his team, the run game, the trenches. And then looking at them, but on the flip side, you're talking about these defenses, LSU, great. Where he left, Ole Miss. I was surprised at their defense throughout that game, especially down the stretch with Paul Golden being the defensive guy. how guys were running wide-ass open from Louisville.
2:19:40Adam Schefter:Yeah, they have talented receivers, obviously talented play caller, head coach, talented quarterback, but I did not expect them to give up 38 points against that Louisville team.
2:19:47Pat McAfee:Yeah, Golden had some hilarious things to say afterwards. I think he understands that as well. They've got a huge one here in a couple weeks. Not that every game isn't important, but LSU traveling into Oxford, Lane traveling in there. They look like they're midseason form right now. Ole Miss still has some stuff to figure out, but they're taking on a very good Louisville team. Brom won at Purdue. Yeah. The guy that's the head coach of Louisville was winning at Purdue. So this guy is an actual coach. College had a spectacular weekend. Obviously, the LSU dominance at primetime. Midday, though, Baylor, Auburn came down to a two-point conversion.
2:20:20Pat McAfee:Nine seconds left. You score a touchdown. You could tie. Go for two. What a tackle. What a tackle. The decision was made by Aranda and Baylor and DJ Lagway as quarterback after scoring a touchdown. Sick drive. Great comeback. Wonderful game. Do you go for two or do you kick the extra point? Everybody I was with, which was Dez, Reese, Joey, Gumpsh, you name it, Red, the whole crew as we were waiting to do our show, go for two. Go for two. Got to do it. You got a chance here?
2:20:47Adam Schefter:Half inch, D-Butt. What do you think? I mean, unbelievable. If you paused this play when he caught the ball, I would have bet$10 million. Look at the confusion on defense too, D-Butt. The pre-snap, they got him exactly where they want him pre-snap as well. Got the edge. Just two-point play. Anytime you're in that low red area, any defenders thinking sprint right option you give the quarterback to hey you got an option to run it you got an option to throw it you have the leverage you beat him so to get to that spot and stop that we always talk about defending every blade of grass and this will be played you know on repeat in that defensive meeting room i mean it's an unbelievable finish great tackle left no doubt the goal line just a
2:21:21Pat McAfee:great great play for winters that man's name is eric winters he tackled matthew klopfenstein okay bailer classic great comeback by dj lagway and baylor cut off short incredible tackle and And then after you see it, you watch it live, you're like, he had to have got it. He had to have got it. And they go to the replay, it's like, wow, what a finish. And what a start to the Golesh era down there in Auburn. Yeah, and for Winters, too, I think on the touchdown, he was the guy that was covering the inside slot because they kind of did a similar thing where he couldn't get around to the wide receiver.
2:21:52So then they scored that touchdown on that next play. Obviously, I don't know if he learned anything from it, but he got around on the second one and made that tackle.
2:22:00Pat McAfee:How about a blocked kick to win a game? That happened in week one. Colorado Thursday beats Georgia Tech on a block kick after having a late comeback. Juju Lewis' first start back in his home state of Georgia ends with Colorado beating Georgia Tech and Colorado pounding a rock.
2:22:17Darius Butler:And stopping a rock too.
2:22:18Pat McAfee:Hey, they were pounding a rock. They were actually playing big boy tough football and I appreciated them all saying I thought we were soft. I thought we were soft because we even said how are they going to stop Justice Haynes? How are they going to stop Georgia Tech who's just going to want to pound them in this new era. I genuinely didn't believe it, didn't know if it was going to happen. Watching that game unfold, it's like, wow, Colorado looks different than they've ever looked before. This is a different style than they've ever really had before. And they just beat Georgia Tech on the road in primetime.
2:22:45Pat McAfee:What a start for prime in another year. Trying to win at Colorado? Of course. What do you mean? What do you mean? It sounds like a question. Well, I just don't know what the standard of how we should talk about this. Like Colorado, I think since he's got there, has a lot of hype, but the expectations have never been like they're going to win the national championship. It's like, hey, they're building a program, building a program, building a program, selling out stadiums. They are the show. What is it? How should we be talking about Colorado?
2:23:15Adam Schefter:I mean, we talk about an NFL every year. All 32 teams going into the season have this idea within their building, like, hey, we can go and win a Super Bowl. We can take care of our business, blah, blah. We know from the outside looking in, it's like, okay, maybe it's eight to ten teams that can actually do it. kind of same thing with Colorado, but you got to play and win what's on your schedule. And this is a great, great start, a completely new identity. Every time you look at them, it's, hey, they're too small. They're too this, they're too that. And then you look at this team that they got absolutely ran over last year.
2:23:42Adam Schefter:It's kind of similar to the redemption or the revenge that Belichick got week one against TCU. So we saw Belichick, we saw Prime, and now he gets this win. I love the Juju. You know, he, they were running the ball, obviously kind of keeping him out of harm's way, but him making this read, making this throw, that was a great route by of tight end as well. And then we were talking, we talk about it probably more than any show, the operation, the field goal blocks. We talked about it when, you know, Vinny going to the Hall of Fame. Hey, what's that time? Is it 1.2? Is it this? We talk, who can block it?
2:24:09Adam Schefter:It's either a guy up the middle. I forget, was it this game where a 6 '9 guy? Yeah, up the cut. Yeah, right up the gut, blocked the game. And then him coming off the edge, getting there, making his block to win this game in a walk-off fashion, man. The type of energy this puts into a locker room, you know, just to prepare you throughout the rest of the season, unbelievable. So, yeah, I think definitely, You're not going to get the same eyes without Shador and Travis Hunter there, even Jordan Seton, you know, going on to LSU. But you've got to build this program kind of from the ground up. You talk about the haves and the have-nots.
2:24:36Adam Schefter:I think Colorado will still kind of be in that have-nots conversation.
2:24:39Darius Butler:Yeah, and you talk about building it from the ground up. Prime kind of switched his NIL approach this year. He was going for five stars and four stars that didn't work out and bring him into the program and that hadn't worked. This year he kind of went with more of guys who were proven, kind of like SIG has done in the portal and other successful teams have done in the portal where they go for production, maybe not so much upside. They're proven college football players instead of, hey, this could be the best football player in the world. It seems to have worked out week one so far.
2:25:07Pat McAfee:Boo Carter on the block there of Aiden Burr. What a start to the season for them. And yeah, if you find your guys, your culture, not scared to adapt. I like that out of Coach Prime, especially with how the offseason went. Let's head up to West Virginia, Morgantown. They retired Pat White's five. There you go. Howdy, Pat. That was cool. That was pregame right before the game kicked off. They celebrated Coach Pat White for what legendary player, All-American, all-everything Pat White did back whenever he was playing. I was so lucky to be a teammate of his. He was redshirted, so he was one year above me in the recruiting class.
2:25:40Pat McAfee:But I came in, played immediately, and got to ride his coattails to so many massive moments. I mean, just things that I did not deserve to be a part of, I was a part of because him and Steve Slayton and Owen Schmidt and the entire crew across the board were so good at football. So I'm very thankful for Pat White. I'm very thankful for West Virginia retiring the five because obviously his professional career did not work out exactly how we had all hoped it would have worked out, both in baseball and in football. If he was like 10 years later, I have no idea what his NFL career would be. I mean, you can go ahead and put that as just a bottomless bowl of success.
2:26:17Pat McAfee:Would have been a top five pick. Yeah, just ahead of his time, incredible teammate, incredible leader, was great for the state of West Virginia. What you see in that stadium right now is not what it looked like before Pat White got there, what the locker room looked like before Pat White got there and after Pat White got there, what the university looked like before and after Pat White got there. Everything that he kind of brought to that state warrants, I think, the retirement, and I'm happy he got celebrated. I'm happy he got celebrated.
2:26:43Adam Schefter:Yeah, you talk about being lucky to be his teammate. I was very unlucky to be his opponent every year in that Big East. And, you know, I saw that he was the only quarterback to start and win four bowl games. Like, just unbelievable. What that offense was, every year, you know, teams that play Navy, it was like, okay, this is the one week we're trying to simulate in practice. Just something you never see. That Rich Rodden, what he had with the offense, with Pat White, Slayton, and the offensive line, like, it was just something that off a video game. He was so fast, so explosive. And then as soon as you were locking and have, you know, eight, nine guys committed to run, boom, he'll put it over the top of the head to Darius Raynald or somebody.
2:27:18Adam Schefter:So he was just an unbelievable player. It seemed like he was an unbelievable teammate. So I'm glad they honored him. I'm glad, you know, he's still in the program, a part of the program as well. But I love seeing guys like this get their flowers. Devin McCourty put out a tweet like, yeah, I was definitely on that tribute video. Any defender in the Big East was definitely on there multiple times, I'm sure.
2:27:36Pat McAfee:Yeah, he was fun to watch, man. And obviously I was kicker and punter. So I was going out on the field pretty much every single time. I was very lucky to be on a team that Pat White was on. and uh yeah i mean that was my real introduction to the football world and it was like just watching these two dudes okay okay i think we're pretty good i feel like we are pretty good aj was this style much in the big tent for us i think whenever we would play a team that was like very
2:28:03Adam Schefter:fast like we were a very fast team i think oh yeah oh yeah we trained speed i mean bar was had
2:28:08Pat McAfee:us working speed we were trying to be a very fast team but if we happened to run into a fast team and it felt like they were able to reach with us. They were able, or penetration was able to happen. Big Ten football, you know, Rich Rod goes up to Michigan. I think he, if you were to ask him, if he had another couple years and got his people in there, I think he thinks they would have done well anywhere. Goes to Arizona, Jacksonville State, back at West Virginia. And we kind of have a similar thing right now with Hawkins at quarterback. He was a starter. Obviously, we get out to a great Cam Cook, our running back.
2:28:37Pat McAfee:First play of the game. This felt like Noel Devine, Steve Slate. This is the first play of the game. 15 minutes left on the clock right there. This guy just gets the ball. Conference USA Player of the Year last year. Transfers into West Virginia from Jacksonville State. First time he touches the ball for West Virginia is a 72-yard run or something like that. It was like, wait, this does feel kind of like it used to be back in the day. Rick Trickett's back on the offensive line coaching them. We got a couple highest recruits I think we've signed in some time are offensive linemen that are playing at a very young age.
2:29:06Pat McAfee:Coastal Carolina obviously gave us a little bit of a test in the second half, but we started out and it felt good. Do you think this style of offense will always be able to work, AJ, if you have the right people? And why do you think Pat White was so successful back in the day? Yeah, I mean, the offense can absolutely work, you mentioned, though, if you have the right people. Like, we know when you have dynamic playmakers that have just unbelievable speed and vision and everything, it's always going to be tough for a defense to stop them. But going back to Pat White, like, when I think of West Virginia, I think of guys like Pac-Man, Pat White, Slate, and I think of those guys of putting them on the map and thinking, I never was able to actually – actually, I'm very lucky that I didn't have to play against Pat White because that's an absolute nightmare, especially as a linebacker, thinking like if you ever play man coverage, like I feel like I can never play man coverage against a guy like Pat White.
2:29:51Not only can he beat you with his arm, but the second I turn my back, he's going to pick up that ball and he's going to run for a 65-yard run on me and it's going to be an absolute backbreaker. Your coach is going to kill you and your whole defense is going to turn on each other and start pointing fingers because that's kind of how it goes when you play a guy like him.
2:30:06Pat McAfee:Yeah, he did demoralize teams. You kind of see it right in front of your eyes. I didn't even think about it from your perspective where everybody's blaming everybody else. And everyone does their job, too. Hey, man, I have my guy. You know, I got a dude running a 4-4. I'm running with him down the seam. Everyone's covered. And then all of a sudden, like, wait, how'd they score? My back was turned. This dude just ran right up my back and ran to the end zone. And when you do that, you're right. It is like it's demoralizing for a team because you're like, what else can we do to get this guy on the ground?
2:30:31Adam Schefter:Coaches, too. You're talking about players. You have coaches over there having conversations that you just never heard on the football side. Like, yeah, talking to D-line, hey, when they snap the ball, just run sideways. All right, we're good. I've never heard that. It's all been about penetration, moving the line of scrimmage. But with those guys, they would go kind of sideways, lateral, and everybody runs a version of an RPO. Now if you're a statue quarterback, you do that. But Pat White, it was always like, and he would hold it, so he's riding. So if you're a D-lineman or a linebacker like A.J.
2:31:01Adam Schefter:is talking about, you ride with 10 and then five pulls it and he's gone. or five pulls it, and then ten's going the complete opposite way. Everybody's going this way, and ten's out of the gate. So, yeah, it's an absolute nightmare.
2:31:12Pat McAfee:And then we had Owen.
2:31:13Adam Schefter:Yeah.
2:31:14Pat McAfee:We had Owen Schmidt, the runaway. Run a tiny throat. He was hang clean in like 590 – forget what the number was. Whatever the case was, the bar was bending, completely hitting the ground. Too much. Never seen anything like it before. Was a bouncer at West Virginia. The semester before he got on the team, he was a walk-on out of Wisconsin Whitewater, I think. Great program. It was Wisconsin Whitewater. Played great. I think he was Virginia High School. Goes out to Wisconsin Whitewater. They're maybe the only ones that gave him an opportunity. Then decides he wants to walk on at West Virginia because seeing the Rich Rod offense and getting back closer to home I think is the origin story.
2:31:51Pat McAfee:Doesn't have a chance to try out whenever he gets there. So he's working at a bar as a bouncer. Good luck. I mean, honestly. He's beating the shit out of so many people. Oh, my God. You go into the wrong bar, just stir some wrong shit, and then that guy's standing behind you just an absolute, his head. Head buttoning you. Yeah, his head is just what it is, you know. Then he gets to West Virginia and he gets on the football team. And in Barwis' weight room, this guy was lifting all of the weights. Like, we took a lot of pride in how we worked. And Barwis obviously kicked our ass on a regular basis.
2:32:21Pat McAfee:And I say our because I was just lucky to be in there alongside of it and unlucky to be in there as well on certain mornings that were just an absolute nightmare. But, like, what this dude did in the weight room and his story about betting on himself and going for it, it's like he was unbelievable just an absolute unbelievable athlete who would run through your face i mean and was looking to do that and could also punt you know like he's a great athlete and he missed his first start he got drafted to seattle seahawks late he missed his first start because as they introed him in the thing he took his helmet which he had done 10 000 times before and bashes the helmet off his forehead.
2:33:01Pat McAfee:Place goes absolutely apeshit, obviously. And then he just keeps running. Obviously, bust cash open. Big one. They're going to have to seal that before. Yeah, we got the ball first. I think he missed first play. Yeah, here he is. Bang. I remember that. Bang. I remember that. Bang. I mean, yeah. We're going to have to fill that one in there. I'm good. I'm good. I mean, he had done that 10 ,000 times, I would say, in his life. He was. So you got him, could run your ass over right here, and was fast.
2:33:31Adam Schefter:Oh, yeah. You got Steve Slayton, who was fast, fast.
2:33:35Pat McAfee:I mean, like, track star fast. And then Pat White is available. And then, oh, yeah, if not that, we'll dump it to Darius Reynod. Tito Gonzalez, Boobie Miles going deep as well. It was fun to watch. That was my introduction to football. That was basically my introduction to football full time. That fucking locker room was awesome. What a cast of characters in there. Rich Rod's back, baby. Yep. Let's go. We need that first half. Keep it going. Yeah. We need some covers. Christ.
2:34:04Adam Schefter:I can't believe we're that old. Unbelievable. More people will like it. The fuck are we doing? Fucking ESPN classic footage. I can't believe we're that old. I mean, Reggie Bush II, you know, T.Y. Hilton's son. T.Y.
2:34:14Pat McAfee:Hilton's boy in Wisconsin. T.Y. Joseph Adai's kid on the sideline at LSU. Yeah. Very fit. We are old, bro. We are old. And that film of us, damn near unwatchable. It's crazy. Yeah, it makes my eyes hurt. Yeah.
2:34:28Darius Butler:I mean, Notre Dame's got Larry Fitz's kid and Jerome Bates' kid. Black hole. Yeah, Black's his kid. You know, it's only a matter of time that Baby Modis is signing somewhere.
2:34:39Pat McAfee:So we got to enjoy every moment. We got to enjoy every first. Like James Franklin, he's first. Bow-na-na-na-na-na-na. Bow-na-na-na-na-na. Bow-na-na-na-na-na. Bow-na-na-na-na-na. Bow-na-na-na.
2:34:59Pat McAfee:They're entering Sandman with Metallica down there as James Franklin and the Virginia Tech Hokies take the field for the first time in this particular era. Now, obviously, a lot of people chit-chatting about what James Franklin can bring there. Look at that place. Look at that place. We've had the opportunity to be down there whenever we were on the Barstool tailgate show. We did a Virginia Tech game down there in Blacksburg. We stayed in another town that had a saloon we went to. I mean, we had this place. It was so fun. This place is out in the hills. This place is bought into everything. I am a huge fan of the Virginia Tech culture.
2:35:37Pat McAfee:And if James Franklin can bring them back to the national forefront, and if game day can get down there, man, it would be so sweet. Now, Long Road, obviously, try to build an entire organization. But can you do that if you get the right transfer portals? like he brought some guys in from Penn State, obviously, who have a lot of experience. You have an incredible fan base. You have the ACC now as opposed to the Big Ten conference and schedule. What are realistic expectations for James Franklin and Virginia Tech?
2:36:06Darius Butler:I believe it's 7.5. Preseason it was 7.5, I believe. They dominated week one. It wasn't even close. And when you look at their schedule, it's really not bad at all. They're going out to Cal, which will be tough. They have to go to SMU in Miami, but those are all later in the season. This could be a team that could be 4-5-0 to start. They host Pitt and Mason Heinschel, who had seven touchdown passes this weekend. So that'll be their first probably real test after Maryland and BC, who are a little bit farther down in the ACC schedule. But 7.5, I like them to go over that number this year just because of everything they did bring in.
2:36:47Darius Butler:I like what they have down there because, you know, Franklin's weakness, is top five teams, and they're only going to play one of those this year.
2:36:53Pat McAfee:There you go. Shout out. Not a bad plan. If you have an Achilles heel, stay away from it. Just go ahead and walk the other way. D-butt, do you know where?
2:37:04Pat McAfee:What's that? Tyler. Oh, yeah. Okay. Good pull. Hell yeah. Is that a best interest in ball? That's C. I'm thinking. It's out there.
2:37:12Darius Butler:It's very close.
2:37:13Pat McAfee:I'm going to be honest. I was down there at LSU. That one? That was awesome. Unbelievable. I mean, all of these are incredible. I don't know how you judge them against each other, I guess. Yeah. You got to judge buy-in from crowd. Virginia Tech, everybody is in.
2:37:24Darius Butler:Yeah. They're all so good now. A &M. Tennessee's great. A &M's awesome.
2:37:28Pat McAfee:A &M's so power, right? Yeah. Yeah, Kanye. Hey, he's doing... Yeah, that shit looks awesome. Elko's the fucking man. Well, I was talking about Ye. Oh, yeah. Elko. I saw so many quotes from him. Yeah, Kanye's all the way back. Yeah, it does feel like Ye's all the way back. But Elko, too. Like, I'm excited to see him this year. Yeah. Have we seen him? He looked pretty trim in the videos I would see. If you saw him at the press conference table, he looked trim. That's what I'm saying. If you saw him on the sideline, still bring it. Football season. I like Elko. Elko is evidently just football.
2:38:04Darius Butler:Wearing that big tarp. Yeah.
2:38:05Pat McAfee:What a perfect touchdown. It's not a tarp. Him walking down with the boys. It's a hoodie. Thank you. Gee. I love Elko. Not a lot of talk about Texas A &M. They fucking dominated, though, after halftime. The Michigan, I mean, I know Underwood took a lot for the Michigan kind of antics. The lights changing from, you know, gold to maize or whatever. That I thought was really, really cool. And that's the one thing A &M has as well is the lights. Like Virginia Tech there, they got the song and everything, but that tunnel is just an old school tunnel. Like the actual LED lights in some of these tunnels are next level.
2:38:40Pat McAfee:Yeah, I was very lucky to be down there at LSU this past weekend. Gumpy, that place was alive. That place was alive. Torrential downpour, okay? Not a lot of coverage. Torrential downpour on everybody outside the stadium while everybody outside the stadium is being told to leave outside, go find cover. So the fact that they filled that place up still after hour and a half delays, two-hour delays, with what was happening weather-wise throughout the day, I think was really special. And the way that all dried up the field, I guess they have an irrigation system that is very good for the field. It didn't appear to be super sloppy, even though the rain was absurd.
2:39:17Pat McAfee:And that place was packed out. Third quarter, there was, or maybe it was second quarter, Lil Wayne, a Millie, whole place blacked out. Lights, light show for it coming in. And I believe that's a part of it. Like, I think Lane likes this. Oh, yeah. Like, hey, let's do a show. Yeah. I'll tell you, it's worth being there. It was worth experiencing. So hot. Sure. I mean, look, so hot. That looks awesome, though. It was. I think everywhere this weekend, too. That's why it's hard to maybe like, you know, I mean, shit, Texas, Texas State. They said people like during the game, there's that picture of all the people sitting in the concourse because it was just so fucking hot.
2:39:59I know like Iowa, they said with the how hot the turf was, it was like 115 degrees on the field. Like so a lot of those games, it's like how much of that goes into it, too, where it's like it's too humanly hot to be playing football.
2:40:11Adam Schefter:USC last week. Yeah, exactly.
2:40:13Pat McAfee:Hey, listen, that heat ain't nothing to fuck with. My jacket. Yeah, no, exactly. Yeah. Peter Schrager called out immediately upon seeing the picture that it was a Wu-Tang symbol on my back right there. And what an honor it is for Chateau Wu. But, yeah, it was really hot. So once shots stand for Steve telling me, by the way, okay, so obviously you don't see your back. Everything was sticking to me since the beginning. So I didn't know when it was going to happen, but in the front it wasn't going through the jacket and i just put this jacket on shout david allen i took i cut the tag off it 20 minutes before i go i seen that thing for like 30 minutes maybe so i put that thing on david allen literally just sends me jackets i put them on i appreciate him doing that uh so i haven't seen my back steve comes up to me and goes hey you're back and i'm like what's we got like a little run he goes no no no it's the it's most of the back he's the one who took this photo he goes turn around i'll take a picture for you and i take it and i look and i I go, ooh, geez, that's everywhere.
2:41:11Pat McAfee:So that was early in the show. We still had another hour and a half, two hours left in the show at this point. So the next time we go down out to the crowd, the crowd was spectacular. Next time I go out to the crowd, I ask them, I go, hey, is my back still wet? They go, what? I go, is my back still wet? And they go, what? And I turn around and you hear them go, ooh, like literally, like everybody yelling about it. So it was a little bit of a scene down there with how hot it was. It wasn't the only scene. Did you guys see Eastern Michigan? You know what they say, run through a brick wall? they're actually doing that okay coach got to talk them up big time a lot of pressure on coach to get them to want to run through a wall of bricks they certainly took the sledgehammer knocked off the edges a little bit left about half in the middle run around sides you kind of get the point now was it the coach talking to the eastern michigan folks or was it joey jaws chestnut what yeah hot dog eating american icon joey chestnut made an appearance with the emus and had a donut eating contest with the lads to kick off the season fun fact about this it feels like america kind of all the way back because the american icon was asked not only to visit emu whenever they run through the brick wall day before they said hey why don't you come to illinois motivate the lads yeah joey josh test on is kind of coming into locker rooms letting him know that american greatness is upon us and we could potentially do that ourselves out on the football field aj how do you feel about joey jaws 2-0 on the weekend uh obviously donut eating contests happening down there at Eastern Michigan and obviously the brick wall situation that happened before the game.
2:42:37I love everything about this. I would assume that Joey Chestnut is going to be at one or two college football games every single Saturday this year, right?
2:42:45Pat McAfee:He might be the Seamus of this year. Yeah. You never know if he's the Seamus, but I like that Joey Jaws is potentially going in there and saying, hey, listen, you want to be the best in the world? There's certain things you've got to commit to. Okay? Take it from me, Joey Jaws Chestnut. I've won 7 ,000 eating contest, whatever the case. When you can find inspiration and motivation, you certainly take it. Joey Josh Chestnut's kind of making the rounds, as he should be,
2:43:08Adam Schefter:D.B. I'm glad he's all the way back and he's still bringing it. And, you know, look, I like these gimmicks, you know, sideline gimmicks. Oh, yes. You know, post-game, locker room gimmicks. I like your tone right now. But that fucking brick wall, that was the dumbest. What? Another word I won't say on air. That was, this was very stupid. AJ, you're lying through your teeth. You don't like this bullshit. It's stupid. It's amazing. It's all about grit, D-Bot. That's all it is. It's running through a brick wall. If you started from the beginning again, Foxy, the guy on the right, the tackle, he loses his sledgehammer, hits the guy in the middle in the leg.
2:43:42Guy in the middle actually limped on to the field. Couldn't really move after that.
2:43:48Pat McAfee:He's holding the sledgehammer that took him out there, 42. 71. Loses handle of the sledgehammer. Hits 42. Skipping back there a little bit. He grabs it, runs around it, and says, I'm happy we did this gimmick. We proved the law here. Sledge to the leg before your first game. How'd you feel about, yeah, that's terrible. And then they lost. Yeah, and, oh, they lost? They lost.
2:44:10Adam Schefter:Of course they did. Look at this bullshit. Unless you got fucking, the only way this works, if you got fucking a guy like Owen Schmidt running through the bridge. Well, they used to have Mad Maxman. Fucking Jagger not. Well, it's Mad Maxman. That's it. Yeah, I know. That's Mad Maxman. Mad Maxman used to line up in a three-point stance and run through that. I thought they won.
2:44:26Darius Butler:I thought they won. Was Mad Max fan not with Joey Chestnut?
2:44:30Pat McAfee:So, Joey Chestnut, he won in Eastern Michigan. Did he win in Illinois? Because I saw a Hail Mary. Joey Chestnut is a proud San Jose State. So, he won. So, he won. They lost at Eastern Michigan. I thought they won.
2:44:43Darius Butler:If you see him in the booth, he has the San Jose State shirt on.
2:44:47Pat McAfee:Oh, really? Okay. I got it. So, he just traveled up to Eastern Michigan because he was in there. Hang out. Okay. Hang out. Just watching the game. I like he's just watching the game, powering through some mini corn dogs with the boys up in the booth. Let me go ahead and showcase what this garlic can do. I've seen him do a lot of different stuff, both with food, spicy stuff, liquid stuff, and alcohol. He's unbelievable. I don't know how he is able to take down the things that he does, but that's what happens when you commit to greatness. I'd like to see him in the donut. Those are pigs in a blanket.
2:45:17Those are pigs in a blanket. Yeah, mini corn dogs, yeah. He ate 250. What's his workout, Regan?
2:45:22Pat McAfee:he does his stomach stuff. He does the Whim-Hump. He's Jack. I don't know if he's Jack, but I think he does exercise some stuff.
2:45:34Darius Butler:Smells like hot dog juice just all the time.
2:45:37Pat McAfee:Well, that's the thing about it is I think he does he doesn't just puke it all up. That shit lives with him. That shit lives with him and he has to live with it as well. Go ahead, Bruce. He talked about it in this in-game interview. I watched the entire thing he he said that he knows if it's going to be a good or bad experience coming out pretty soon after each hot hot dog or other food eating content yeah we actually i i got a chance to kind of experience that at the colts game at halftime when he tried to when they did the st elmo's cocktail sauce uh you know at halftime of course that's kind of the time you leave the suite to go use the restroom i wait at halftime just because it's so packed in there so i waited probably five minutes into the third quarter.
2:46:19Hashtag life hack. Life hack. And as I open the door to go to the bathroom, I see a guy shot out of a cannon running in front of me to go to the bathroom. Turns out it's Joey Joss. Post all that St. Elmo's cocktail sauce. I get in there. Both stalls are unfortunately occupied, and Joey Joss is in a panic. He banged on the first door. Nope, nobody's there. bait on the second door. Nope. Still. Sorry, man. Someone's in here. And you just hear, oh, hurry up. Hurry up. Quick. And of course, this is, this was the game, I believe. And, you know, I take, I do my business, just take a piss. And on my way out, I hear just a bad, just, oh no.
2:47:06And I think at that point, someone realized what was happening and finished up quickly in the stall. But yeah, it doesn't just, it doesn't just sit in there and it's all hunky dory no it comes out he doesn't throw it up but it comes out the basement gets flooded we appreciate him battling for the good of our society i think you know like i think it's good for our society
2:47:29Pat McAfee:to be able to see things like that happen because then you can really understand what the body can do yes yeah he takes down way too many dogs to be uh able to operate every day especially with what we are told about all this food and what it does to your body and he's just taking in an entire life worth every single time i love i love the candy paint okay i love what happened down in houston okay and obviously the um the rims there classic houston i do believe from my understanding uh i've never seen anywhere else but i have driven in houston a few times and see those things popping out and i think both hilarious and you got to really pay attention to this The people that are driving these need to be better drivers than maybe most of us.
2:48:14Pat McAfee:Love that Houston's all in and bought into the culture and the community. And also maybe starting a new tradition that can lead them to a national championship down there in Houston. Yeah, maybe. Maybe. Listen, it's cool. Anytime you can wheel a nice vehicle like that out in the field, I absolutely love it. That is really neat. Can you imagine what would have happened if one of their players would have got their legs? Sawn off. Yeah, sawn off or something like that, though. Those things are on the side of, like, SUVs. Oh, yeah. SUVs take up the entirety of the lane. Like twisted metal. Exactly.
2:48:47Like, cars are built to fit the lanes.
2:48:51Pat McAfee:Yes. That's why European cars are, like, smaller because their roads are smaller. Down there, I mean, they're going to have perfect precision driving. It's unbelievable. They look sweet. Parking. It's my driving. Parking. Parallel? Yeah. I need three spots at least for that. The driving is phenomenal with them. But I also like the fact that a lot of people can put a little something on a tailpipe. You know, we can get a little bit of that. We can certainly put some hydraulics in this thing, make this bitch dang us a little bit. We can certainly do that. What does nobody else really do? Let's take these rims and take this shit out.
2:49:24Pat McAfee:Point them. Okay, let's say I like the innovation. I like Houston's always seemingly ahead of everybody else with everything. But for me, I'd be a little bit nervous driving it. Certainly. I'd just be a little bit nervous driving it. But that's why I'm not from Pittsburgh. I can't drive that. You got to really... You'd be able to. What about if there's just a forced one lane road? I'm hitting everything if I'm driving that car. Everything. If you even nick someone's tire, that thing's exploding. I mean, you know, and then that car's fucking... You're causing a 15-car pileup if you... I have too much anxiety, I think, to drive one of those.
2:50:02Pat McAfee:But I do appreciate that they're out there on the roads doing it. And I like that Houston brought them in to intro them to the game.
2:50:07Darius Butler:Did you see what I did? did?
2:50:08Pat McAfee:What's that? I believe
2:50:10Darius Butler:the Bison drove an IndyCar out on the field. What? Yeah, it was awesome. Oh, you know,
2:50:16Pat McAfee:Kurt Signetti actually was a pace car driver for IndyCar this past year, so his relationship obviously with the IndyCar family has obviously grown, I assume, over the last couple of months. I did not know they took an IndyCar out onto the field. Yeah, Hoosier. Is that his name? Yeah. Bear Bison? He's new. He's good. Now he's old. Well, you're right.
2:50:35Darius Butler:They brought him back. He's retro. And I thought it was AI at first. But I'm pretty sure he drove an IndyCar. He did. I saw that as well.
2:50:43Pat McAfee:Whose car? Was it Connor Daly's car? Here it is right here. Mike Schumann at the Daily Hoosier. Run out led by Hoosier the Bison in an IndyCar. Okay. I wonder if Hoosier the Bison went through Auburn and thought him out of driving an IndyCar. Look at this.
2:50:55Darius Butler:Ran over a player.
2:50:56Pat McAfee:Right on the... I mean, it's going pretty slow.
2:50:59Darius Butler:This is the end. He was going 150 at the beginning.
2:51:03Pat McAfee:Peels out here. Kind of an old model, obviously. had those laying around, paying for Indiana. I like the idea. They better be... Oh, yeah. They were. That place was rocking as well. The environments, man. College football has them. You know? Like, obviously, Patriots, Seahawks will be showcasing maybe the best environment the NFL has. So I like that that's happening over there in Seattle. My NFC team. Love that. Got a big one coming up.
2:51:31Adam Schefter:Big one. Hot start. Hot start for you. First game as a fan. Yeah, just kind of kicking off the season. That's what my NFC team does. You know what I mean?
2:51:39Darius Butler:We need Eamon Warrior to play. Sounds like he's going to be out there.
2:51:44Pat McAfee:Sounds like it. Schefter wasn't willing to say that the man flew all the way to Australia. That would be crazy. But maybe all the trainers went over to Australia, so you had to go over there to train. That's a whole other follow-up. They did go over there a lot of days beforehand, so maybe all the trainers are over there as well that he was training with, so if he was to stay back and train, everybody's over there. But you could leave somebody back Yeah, he's a pretty important piece. I feel like if they really didn't want him to play, he's not getting on that long flight to go over there. He's certainly not practicing today with zero limitations.
2:52:19I think it's safe to assume that he's probably going to play. I think so, too. I don't know how much he's going to play, but I think it's safe to assume we will see him on the field.
2:52:26Pat McAfee:How about the NFC West being celebrated here the opening two nights? That is very real. A lot of incredible teams cannot wait for that to start. Do you think the – well, they could be showcased in a way as well. You never know. If they win a few games, don't let them get hot. Watch out. Don't let them get hot down there. New practice facility coming. Remember, new era potentially in Arizona. We shall see. You're going to have to see it to actually believe it. Do you think McDonald, with his tough culture that he's built out there, he would maybe want his equipment manager taking on some sheds of some blocks and warm-up?
2:52:55Pat McAfee:This guy is the best. We need him on our team. If somebody's willing to step, bang, get right back into the fire. Yep, let me get right back in there. Do it again. Do it again. Good leverage. Boom. Let me get back up here. Let me go at BAM. Yeah. Yeah, for the good of the team. For the good of the team. You think he's in that role next week? I think what he says is, I think he said, hey, don't hold back on me today. You guys got to do what you got to do. He's in pads next week. Yeah, I think there's a chance maybe he's playing for the team. Maybe he's on the other side and they got some sorry bum there.
2:53:27Pat McAfee:But him getting right back in there, I would like to say, it's not about how many times you get pancaked. It is about how many times you get right back into the same exact spot, standing the exact same way to get pancaked again. Shout out this guy. Talk about commitment to ball. Absolute commitment. Commitment to ball, the Erlacher family. Started Notre Dame. Let's go ahead and transfer. Let's pick up a safety. Fresno State, USC. Who's back here? Boom. Go ahead. Get the hell out of here. Thank you. Shout out to the defense making some plays. There's a couple of safeties this weekend, I do believe.
2:54:03Pat McAfee:Yeah. I'll tell you, the defenses that can move are seemingly pretty problematic. That LSU defense, watching Clemson try to get to the edge. And once again, I know I'm just referring to this game a lot, strictly because I was there, boots on the ground, watching it. It's hard not to just go from your own personal experiences. Watching them try to get the edge on LSU's defense. It was like, yeah, right. That's never going to happen. And then the video you showed, feels like potentially LSU's doing some voodoo magic. Wow. That was just a tough play call on a third and long. Okay? And people were killing this guy.
2:54:40Left tackle. What guy are you talking about? The left tackle for Clemson. Who's that? I want to say his name's Haynes Bryant or something along those lines. I don't know. 74. 74, exactly. I think it's Jacobs. Brandon Jacobs' boy? Yeah. Oh, it is. Oh, yeah. Well, that sucks because this was not the point. I didn't even say anything about him. Just so Connor posted his video. Connor, what was your caption? My caption was a bold scheme on third down to run this play because the guy that he's clearly supposed to be blocking is outside. Like right there, if you pause at the beginning, the guy's outside of the tight end who's lined up behind him.
2:55:17So he's clearly responsible for that guy way out there. But then because of the way the play develops, that guy doesn't really do a pass rush. And then what weeks come through the B gap, it was just one of those things where it's like, man, This guy got screwed by whatever play call this was. That's not what you were saying. It wasn't his fault at all.
2:55:34Pat McAfee:I think that was a ripple effect of the video going very, very, very, very, very, very, very viral that a lot of people were kind of attacking the player. And I think what you were saying is that was not the intent of the video. No, not at all. It was just one of those things where you see it and it's like, this is fucking hilarious. This is what they're wheeling out there. Davos Wiener is calling this up, dialing this up. And that also kind of not in a similar vein with the offense, but the Venables stuff that we were talking about kind of before the show about Clemson, like it might be over for Dabo Sweeney and Clemson.
2:56:06I think that it's just time to accept that when it comes to that team.
2:56:09Pat McAfee:In its last 10 games versus the SEC, Clemson is 3-7 outright, 2-8 against the number, negative 88 scoring margin, minus 88.5 cover margin.
2:56:20Darius Butler:Means they got fucking blown up. They weren't even close to covering the number. Yeah, but that one's tough because that is 30 points It's just off Saturday night. So have you removed, you know, whatever. Well, in last year. Georgia? Well, yeah, that was two years ago. Yeah, so 31.
2:56:36Pat McAfee:Yeah, I don't fully. I don't know, man, because they were tall.
2:56:41Darius Butler:Well, they're not going the right direction. They still have.
2:56:44Pat McAfee:It seems like they still have the athletes.
2:56:45Darius Butler:That's what I'm saying. Their recruiting classes have gone the wrong way as well. I mean, the two best quarterbacks, they went from Deshaun Washington College, who was a great player, and then to Trevor Lawrence. It's like, K. Kubrick was supposed to be really, really good and kind of continue that, and they never did. Clemson used to be the best.
2:57:01Adam Schefter:He beat Bama and Nick Saban twice. Bingo. Four years as a national champion. Yeah, they did. That was a good time. And they'll always have that.
2:57:08Darius Butler:True. Dabo might not have that drip anymore.
2:57:16Pat McAfee:I forgot.
2:57:17Darius Butler:Great career.
2:57:17Pat McAfee:Clemson people are coming after me pretty good. Pretty good. Tell me, you know. You made the pick? Yeah. Yeah. Fucking other guy. I forgot you got to stay off the internet on college game day Saturdays. Yeah. You were right. Yeah, but that never. It's always the. No, I know. But, you know, for anyone from Clemson out there, boy, you got egg on your face today, don't you? Yeah, but they. I think they know now. I think that was pretty fucking embarrassing on Saturday night. Salk at Stanford Steve said. Took him. How could he do that?
2:57:49Darius Butler:That's because he does the stupid gambler thing that we do sometimes where it's like 99 % is on LSU and it's 10 points. Can't take LSU. Maybe. I did it too.
2:58:01Pat McAfee:He's kind of fading the entire. Hand up. You did the same thing? Oh, yeah. You said you got kind of maybe swindled or bamboos.
2:58:08Adam Schefter:Yeah, I got swindled. I got fooled. I got sold a bad bill of goods. But, look, I have faith in the coach. I have faith in the coach. I'm like, hey, you know, lanes, all this other outside noise, all these distractions. 48 transfers. How do you get everybody on the same page? Dabo, you know, the culture. You know, bunker mentality. Nobody believes in us. But, boy, were they right. Yeah. That wasn't my close. Happened with Wisconsin, too.
2:58:31Pat McAfee:Yeah. It was fun to say that at LSU, I will say, though. Yeah. Like, that was kind of a fun thing to do. Yeah. That was kind of a fun thing to say, like, they're going to win by 50. Mm-hmm. But I did think, wow, that's a very aggressive way to start the year. Like, if that is not right, Clemson comes out and wins that one. And you heard me say that immediately. Boy, if they lose, though, that was me realizing in real time that I'm about to get murdered. We got another, what, 13 weeks of the regular season? There's so many things that are about to play out in front of our eyes. Who's going to get lucky?
2:59:01Pat McAfee:Who's going to be able to stay healthy? Who's going to be able to take it to long haul? We shall see. I believe West Virginia just added a player, potentially added a player.
2:59:08Darius Butler:Yeah, I saw that. Safety from Georgia.
2:59:09Pat McAfee:So what's going on? What did happen?
2:59:11Darius Butler:I believe he was one of the five-for-five guys that tried out for a team but never signed an NFL contract.
2:59:18Pat McAfee:He just went and worked out for it. Worked out for a team. Now he's at West Virginia.
2:59:22Darius Butler:Boom.
2:59:23Pat McAfee:Are we the first team to sign somebody? No. No, Texas did.
2:59:27Darius Butler:Got it.
2:59:28Pat McAfee:So we're not. Texas did this.
2:59:29Darius Butler:Correct. And you had some guys play this weekend that never went and even tried out for a team, but they were part of the 5-5-2. There's like three different sections. Did you never even go try out? Did you try out? And did you sign an NFL contract? And those are the ones that LSU did not play, but they are there.
2:59:46Pat McAfee:Got it. I think working at is one thing for a team, which is kind of those, I guess you would say tryouts. But training camp is more so tryout. So then that goes back to – This is the only time. We're never going to deal with this again. Maybe. We will. If it's five for five, that's the – What if somebody three years eligible? Dan, declares for the draft, goes through the entire thing. Okay? They still have two years left in the five for five. Are they going to come back to college? If they're not good enough, though, to make – if they take three years and they declare for the draft and they're not good enough to make a team or be on that roster, they would probably make more money in college.
3:00:35So they'll stay all five years.
3:00:37Pat McAfee:Okay, so let's say four years. A guy starts for four years. He thinks projected to be okay in the NFL. Maybe back half of draft. Going to potentially go do this. ends up not drafted goes uh gets signed undrafted free agent or whatever goes to a place goes to training camp that person still has one year left gets cut from the end of training camp right trying to make team wants to make yeah still has one year left is he going back probably i it just feels like the money in college football is so great that and this is why the draft has become a little more watered down because guys are just staying in college that if you back half a draft do you think is staying for five?
3:01:15Yeah, like you would assume that those guys who are in the back half of the draft now will be those dudes who play five full years of college. And that's the same thing as the year after that. You know, like those dudes who play four years know, hey, I'm going to make probably two, maybe three times more money staying in college for my fifth year because of how great I'll be. And then next year, I'll hopefully rise a little bit in the draft.
3:01:40Pat McAfee:Yeah, it could certainly happen again, though. Yes. And I thought this was the last year for it, and then something was said in the game day meeting, and I was like, oh, I didn't even think about somebody after maybe four starting years thinking they were good, maybe get some wrong information on how they are. Something happens right before the draft. They do this entire thing. Will they be the ones that do it now? And I guess with the amount of money in college, if you're a back half of the draft guy, you're definitely going to want to get all five years of college ball in to potentially work your way up.
3:02:10Pat McAfee:I don't know. I genuinely don't know. Unless you're just tired of putting college ball. If there's not rules that say you explicitly can't do it, this is going to happen until they say you can't.
3:02:17Adam Schefter:That's why it needs to be your rule. Yeah. Well, they need to do what the NBA does. That's why we need to pass the college sports act. The NBA doesn't do it anymore, remember? Well, the NBA combine, you're allowed to declare, go and do the NBA combine, and then there's a two-week period after that where, like, you talk to NBA teams and you get, like, some maybe realistic expectations, and then you can go back.
3:02:36Pat McAfee:Yeah, but then there's also G League guys playing. How does that work? Well, I don't understand that aspect. I'm just talking about declaring from college, going to NFL. In the NBA, if you're a college player, you can declare, go and do the combine, and then after the combine, not make it to the draft and then get undrafted and all that, and then decide to go back legitimately after the combine. Yeah, it used to be you couldn't sign with an agent. Yes. Yeah, so you could do that, but you couldn't sign with an agent. But now we've got G League guys coming back. Yeah. So is that still a thing? that we always, always understood this.
3:03:10Pat McAfee:But now does it even matter? Because if they even sign with the G League team, they can still come back. Within the 5-for-5, they would, right? Like if they're 22 in the G League, because if your clock starts at 19, I don't know. College basketball fucking sucks, so who cares? Oh! In comparison to any other. No, but all these injunctions kind of go with each other. You know, this shit kind of affects multiple things. Football, obviously, in the forefront of it. It's just, there has to be some sort of rules. You know, and I appreciated getting a chance to talk about the Protect College Sports Act.
3:03:37Pat McAfee:And there's a bunch of people coming out saying how none of us want against it. It's like, because all of us, like, we have to have something. Like, if you want to rewrite these things, cool. But we got to fucking, if we're going to make adjustments to things to make them better, cool. Like, if you want to talk about what the cap is on the amount of money or how the cap isn't, whatever the case is, is more money, less money, because you want to take away money, cool. Let's do it. Let's have that conversation. But we need to continue to push something here. And you're like, look at the crowds. Look at all this.
3:04:00Pat McAfee:It's like, yeah, look at the spreads of the games. That's only going to continue, like, what's happening and who's going to be where. Will this continue? It's like at some point we have to decide that we're going to figure something out here, you know, because we're all just kind of kicking the can down the road. And it's like, are we close enough with this Protect College Sports Act to get enough done? Or do we need to scrap this and start three years from now? A lot of really smart people that care a lot say, like, hey, this could help at least a little bit. But I guess there's a lot of people saying there's some shit in the back of that that we don't want either.
3:04:27Pat McAfee:It's like, all right, dude. Okay. Breaking. House leadership is canceling the last two weeks of September. House will be out. More recess. What? That's cool. I wish I could. When we were in school, I wish I could say, you know what? More recess.
3:04:39Adam Schefter:Yeah. I think they just watched the game this weekend. Ah, fuck it. Football's back. Yeah. I don't want to do it. Pick this shit up in fucking February.
3:04:46Pat McAfee:This really feels like an off-season thing, doesn't it? It's like, well, our off-season is going to be a lot of, like, election stuff, you know, conversation. It's like, well, I guess we'll catch it the next one. Which is kind of the worry. kind of worry is that this thing's just going to get, you know, and then we're never going to have anything. And then the teams at the top are going to stay at the top and probably go even more. And then they're going to knock out the middle class. You say he's going to knock out, he's going to knock out the middle class. And then there's just going to be feeder system for big schools and other schools.
3:05:17Pat McAfee:That's just what it will end up being. It's where everybody's projecting. Then will there be enough money for, you know, Olympic programs as well, which is a big part of this entire thing, women's sports. like what sports end up getting cut if there becomes a massive financial deficit from all the potential money being spent in one particular sport versus all the other sports, which is happening now. There's no real. So it feels like a lot of chaos. Good luck to everybody that has to figure that out. Go get them. Ross Dellinger says, this impacts the Protect College Sports Act. The House, originally scheduled to be in session for four weeks in September, is now scheduled for just two.
3:05:50Pat McAfee:This means the House would not consider the congressional bill until it returns in mid-November and then, what, it's election season, right? Yeah. Yeah, this ain't happening. So not this year. Not this year. Yeah, but then they say not next year either because that's first year. Oh, yeah. No, no, no. They don't give a shit about this. They don't give a shit about this at all. Who cares? College football is great the way it is, you know? It actually is pretty awesome. Exactly. Which is kind of the defense of it. But like you said, then that's what comes next is the same 12 teams who have all the money make the playoffs every single year.
3:06:20And then, yeah, maybe a couple of these group of five teams get in. They get their asses beat. and then the middle class kind of just very slowly kind of gets weeded out because a lot of these, you know, even like massive schools and massive conferences, like their athletic departments are operating at a massive, massive deficit. And it's like, how long can you do that? Well, hopefully forever.
3:06:40Pat McAfee:Yeah, exactly. Hopefully it'll be able to last forever because we're incredibly lucky and thankful for all of it. All right, let's get the hell out of here. Let's get back tomorrow. Happy Labor Day, everybody. Happy Labor Day. A.J., did you hear what Shefty said about laboring on Labor Day? No, but I did hear Shefty. He was all up in arms about Raheem missing his birthday on the flight. Breaking. Breaking. I got a nugget for you, Pat. Turned 50, but he didn't. Yeah. Didn't get a chance to experience it. It was a good nugget. It was a nugget. Yeah. I didn't expect A.J. to forget. He was so mad about it.
3:07:16Pat McAfee:How about it? Hey, Shefty, anything we missed? Yeah. Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba. And AJ's pissed that he even thought about bringing it up. 49ers defense coordinator Raheem Morris turned 50 years old Thursday, September 3rd. It also happened to be the day the 49ers flew to Australia, leaving Wednesday, September 2nd and arriving Friday morning the 4th. The 49ers lost today, but Morris lost his 50th birthday.
3:07:37Darius Butler:Someone told him that. He's like, oh, that's so cool. God, it's like a leap year, but not really. I got to tweet this out. Need to see the Atlanta Falcons Twitter group, what they responded to that, because I'm sure it was great.
3:07:48Pat McAfee:Yeah, I'm sure they had some ideas on whether or not we should be celebrating birthdays. I think Raheem Morris is going to do great at his new gig. Yeah. And I think his 50th birthday is going to be hanging out in Australia for two weeks. How long have they been down there? Long time. That's a long time being in a completely different. Getting acclimated. I got acclimated back here. That's the problem. After the game, you got to get back on track in America. If this goes in, they're all going to get acclimated.
3:08:19Darius Butler:Tough game week two as well. People were joking about who they have to play week two. That's why they won it. At Miami. The Niners? They're flying to Miami? I thought it was Miami in San Francisco. Either way, it's a tough game. He doesn't even know. Making them fly to Miami after Australia would be quite the decision. No, that's it.
3:08:40Pat McAfee:We'll give Miami the furthest they could possibly have for you. Does that make you feel better? All right. If this goes in, everybody's acclimated. It's pretty big for two teams.
3:08:49Darius Butler:Before the game or coming back?
3:08:51Pat McAfee:On the other side.
3:08:52Darius Butler:Okay.
3:08:56Pat McAfee:Oh! Did that go in? I think it did. It looked like it did. Because the net's broken on that side. They got acclimated. Full acclimation. Hey, to acclimation. I'm so happy for them. Somebody send that to them. Let them know. It's all good. Don't worry about it. football gods just told us that that's yeah. Wow. That felt good. I needed that. Remember last week there was a lot of shots going up there.
3:09:20Darius Butler:Yeah. Big throw.
3:09:22Pat McAfee:Thank you.
3:09:26Count it. Yeah, that's it. Drained it. I don't know. What? Back wall. Back wall, please. Zoom in, too.
3:09:35Pat McAfee:Actually, could you put on this wall as well, maybe? Yeah, maybe a pause. That went in. That's a bucket. Definitely went in. Yeah, it was back iron. Yeah, that went in. That thing turned over, too. I'm pretty pumped up about that. It turned over. Okay. Yeah. All right. Great week one. Yeah. Full acclimation. I'm so happy for the guys. I know.
3:09:57Darius Butler:I mean.
3:09:59Pat McAfee:To the lads out there. Happy that could happen. What's that? You thinking about last week?
3:10:03Darius Butler:Yeah, I'm still thinking about last week. Me too, yeah, yeah. War and death. But I'm glad the night is reclimated.
3:10:08Adam Schefter:We can't be stuck in the past. It was world peace you were shooting for last week. But hey, acclimation. Hey, this is fucking reality, kids. This is fucking reality. It's football season. Who gives a fuck about all that shit right now?
3:10:21Pat McAfee:Okay, well, we hope that football maybe brings that. Okay, especially some acclimation. Be a friend, tell a friend something nice and might change your life. We're interested in together. We can't thank all of you enough for allowing us to do this. We're doing universe balls on world peace one week. and then sleep schedule acclimation the next week. Nobody gives us the respect for the range in which we operate. Talked a little bit about the middle class too, didn't we? Yeah. That's right. Trickle-down, he could all mix. Ain't all the taxes. We fucking love all of you. If it wasn't for all of you, we wouldn't be able to do what we do.
3:11:01Pat McAfee:And we love what we do because it's the most ridiculous thing of all time. and it's strictly and genuinely just because all love you. All right. Be your friend, tell your friend something nice. It might change your life. We're understand together. Team on me. Team on three. It's week one, baby.
3:11:17Darius Butler:Hell yeah.
3:11:17Pat McAfee:Let's go. One, two, three. Team. Goodbye. A new podcast series from ABC Audio in 2020 goes inside a case that has captivated the nation. To many people, Luigi Mangione is a modern-day Robin Hood.

3:11:46Pat McAfee:to what authorities are saying about a possible motive. I'm ABC News legal analyst Brian Buckmeyer. Listen to Burden of Proof, Luigi Mangione, wherever you get your podcasts.
