In short

Week-one NFL discussion with “Watt Wednesday” guests; highlights include AFC/NFC Players of the Week, JJ Watt’s commentary on Vikings vs. Packers defense, and a film-based breakdown of Caleb Williams’ Bears offense after a 59-point game. The show also covers coaching/strategy themes (defensive pressure + shell coverage, quarterback ownership), officiating debates, and preview talk for upcoming games (Patriots-Steelers, plus Chiefs/Broncos and other early-season storylines).

Guests (backgrounds)

  • JJ Watt: Former NFL defensive star; now CBS lead color commentator. Known for elite pass rush and defensive analysis.
  • A.K. Shipley (AQ Shipley): 12-year NFL veteran; Super Bowl champion; now a game caller/color commentator; “In the Trenches” segment host.
  • Darius Butler (“D-Butt”): 9-year NFL veteran; “Everything DB” segment host.
  • AJ Hawk: Former NFL linebacker; “In the Trenches”/football analysis panelist.
  • Jason McCourty: Former NFL defensive back; guest analyst (mentioned in episode title; appears as part of the guest lineup).
  • Adam Schefter: NFL insider/reporter (mentioned in episode title; appears as part of the guest lineup).

Key claims

  • Caleb Williams’ 59 points should be credited as more than just “points”—the defense’s coverage issues and Williams’ situational execution (third-and-long, two-minute drives) are emphasized.
  • Brian Flores’ Vikings defense is portrayed as dominant because pressure arrives before holes develop, paired with shell coverage behind it.
  • Packers’ fourth-down sneak failure and a controversial roughing-the-passer call are framed as key swing moments.
  • Chiefs’ new identity includes a stronger running game (Kenneth Walker) and a “run through people’s faces” culture shift.

Notable examples

  • Caleb “Houdini” plays vs. Carolina: third-and-11 conversions, cross-body deep throws, and a touchdown off a late-half run.
  • Vikings vs. Packers: described as “15 defenders” style pressure; Jordan Love repeatedly pressured with little time.
  • Packers: fourth-down sneak stuffed; later drive kept alive by penalties.
  • Chiefs: Kenneth Walker early workload; Travis Kelce/Biennemi-era contrast discussed.

0:00Pat McAfee:Hello beautiful people and welcome to our humble abode, the Kraft King's Thunderdome. On this Watt Wednesday, September 16, 2026, this sports program begins now. Football! Is the absolute greatest and we can't thank you enough for allowing us to do this for a living. I believe I just got texted some breaking news, so I don't know if I'm supposed to do this or not, but they sent me it, so I'm just going to do it. From the NFL, we, ladies and gentlemen, can announce the offense, defense, and special teams, Players of the Week for the AFC and the NFC. Congratulations to these six men on winning the prestigious award of Players of the Week.

0:42Pat McAfee:I had a chance to win a couple of these. Obviously, it's a huge ordeal. Your team will celebrate you. And any time you get represented or any time you get celebrated by the league, I think it's a beautiful thing. Kenneth Walker introduces himself to the Kansas City Chiefs fan base as an absolute stud. Watt gets the rock a lot, becomes their bell cow. They get a huge win over the Denver Broncos. TJ Watt, his brother, JJ Watt, will be joining us here in about 10 minutes or so. Congrats to him winning probably his 50th one of these, an absolute stud. And then Evan McPherson won 4-for-4 with a long of 58 in Cincinnati.

1:14Pat McAfee:So their defense got a lot of turnovers on Tampa Bay. Joey Burrow can only play better, we would assume. And their special teams guys winning AFC special teams of the league. Maybe the Cincinnati Bengals are about to go on a run. And then the NFC side, congratulations to Andre Swift. Yeah. That Bears team could have had about 10 different guys potentially. And then Zach Bond, linebacker for the Eagles all over the field. Then Simi Fajoko, which I don't think I know enough about and how he did. Joining us, ladies and gentlemen, is a 13-year NFL vet, 12-year NFL vet, Super Bowl champion. Back to tell us about the trenches.

1:49Pat McAfee:Back to chit-chat about the big guys in ball. He was voted alongside David Pasch, the number two local color commentary team around the NFL last year. Ladies and gentlemen, Penn State guy A.K. Schaefer. Hey, Alex. A.K., can you tell me about Simi Fajoko real quick here? Yeah, so he was battling for a fifth or sixth spot as a wide receiver all training camp. He's been with the team for a couple years now, practice squad guy. This year makes the team and gets a huge blocked punt in the game against the Chargers. Hey, I like everything that the Cardinals are doing. Got a new practice facility. The coach yesterday seems like a psycho in a good way, which I think we like.

2:25Pat McAfee:And obviously you're on the call. They get a huge win over the Chargers. Everybody high on the Cardinals, very down on the Chargers. Did the Cardinals have their best game, Chargers had their worst game, or the Cardinals for real, actually? The Cardinals are for real. I love their offense. The defense stepped up in a big way. They bring over Dewey Wingard from the Jaguars. Mack Wilson played out of his mind. They're better up front. Buda Baker's an absolute missile. So I think as long as the defense holds their own offensively, they have so much talent. and I think they're only up and to the right.

2:51Pat McAfee:Jacoby Brissett,$17 million a year. You can obviously work with that at the quarterback position, especially if you're trying to build a brand-new era over there. Nine-year NFL vet, Darius J. Baller. Yes, sir. Congrats to these guys. Anytime good player of the week, obviously the boys are happy for you, the lads are happy for you. But for Kenneth Walker, great way to start his era with the Kansas City Chiefs.

3:09AQ Shipley:Absolutely. Just like you, he was lucky enough to win a couple of these, and it is a big deal because you look around the entire league or your entire conference, and for you to get that honor is huge. And, yeah, that's a great welcome to the city for him to get a career high coming off being the Super Bowl MVP. A great, great investment by the Kansas City Chiefs, especially when Mahomes is trying to get up to speed to start his season. I love everything from K-9. And the rest of these guys, Zach Bond, building on the career that he's put together, which has been magical. Could have won defensive player of the year a couple years ago.

3:38AQ Shipley:Just all these guys across the board, man. Shout out. Way to start the season.

3:41Pat McAfee:Yeah, great start to the season in midseason form. T.J. Watt gets a pick six. Unbelievable. Looks like a raptor. He looked like an actual – he looked like an alien of some sort. But he's done it before. I mean, he's starting to climb up the record books, not only for stats and pressures, but picks and everything like that. He's a ball hawk. Ladies and gentlemen, it's not just D-Butt, who's in the NFL for nine years. It's not just A.Q. Shipley, who's obviously been in the NFL 12 years and now he's calling games. I was very lucky to have a cup of coffee in the NFL for about eight years or so. Today, the talk to the table looks different.

4:15Pat McAfee:We got a lot of history here today. What's that over at the Talks table? We've got App Boston Connor and Chris Mad Dog Russo. Mad Dog, we saw you all morning, obviously, on TV. See you got the sling there. Thank you for taking the time to travel out to Thunder. I don't think we've ever really had you on our show, even though we've been on your airwaves before. What happened to you? Are you okay? Yeah, you know, a lot of people saw me on Stevie's program this morning. You know, first take, great show. Last night, everyone knows I have a proclivity for gummies. Took a gummy or two, maybe three, four.

4:45Right, right. I slipped and banged my elbow on my very beautiful big granite countertop. I went into the ER last night. They said, listen, Mad Dog, we might have to take this thing off. We might have to remove the elbow. You might need an elbow replacement. You lost your arm? Very close. I cannot overstate how hard I hit this thing on that granite countertop, but I am the hardest working man in the business. I said, nope, Stevie needs me tomorrow. McAfee's going to need me tomorrow. I will be there. So I said, give me this cheap fucking sling and I'll be there and I'll be ready to go.

5:21Pat McAfee:Okay, so you're powering through a lot. You almost had to have your arm amputated because of the amount of pain. That's what the gummies are for, Pat. I think you know a thing or two about that. Yeah, I do. And it's McAfee and I McAfee. Obviously, you know that, Matt Dogg. We're big fans of yours. Had you ever missed work before? No, no, never. Back in, you know, I was down in Florida before I obviously moved back to New York. I've been doing this for about 35 years. Never missed a show, which is obviously why I've been number one in the ratings book for 30-plus years. You can look that up. Mike will tell you that, too.

5:52Obviously, Mr. Francesa, my partner for a long time. But, no, you know, there's a lot of talk about ratings with your show and with Game Day. And, you know, I don't know. Sometimes the cream wants to be around the other cream. Sorry, you're a cream? Yeah. I'm a needle. Do you remember High Heat on Sirius XM? uh-huh probably don't i do i did i watch you let's not forget buddy you were on my network

6:20Pat McAfee:yeah i was okay i'm happy you're on here actually because d but just reminded me we had been told even though we i think you were kind of forced to have us on your little bit little bit it feels like that happens a lot in our career but it wasn't you know necessarily the the perfect fit over there we're honored to be a part of your station but we did hear rumblings that maybe you didn't like the fact that we would always say, we'll be back on the other side on Mad Dog Radio. Because we were all mad dogs, you know, so we started barking. We heard maybe you didn't love it. Yeah, listen, I get it.

6:52I understand what you're doing. My big thing was I didn't particularly like the cursing, okay? I think it's, you know, lowbrow. You don't think any Joe Schmoe who's kind of a bit of a moron can curse to kind of fill the spaces. Hold on, though.

7:06Pat McAfee:I thought they said the most intelligent folks actually swear, and the people are telling the most truth because they're not filtering themselves. For instance, Dan Orlovsky, every time he says fudge, we know what he wants to do. Do not get me started on Dan Orlovsky, okay? I've been on first take with that cheapskate quite a bit as of late, and, you know, the fudging stuff, people have said it. He's a weirdo, okay? Dan Orlovsky's a weirdo. Great player. Well, I shouldn't say great player, but he played in the NFL. You know, he's a good guy. But, you know, I got over the swearing thing, okay? I got over it because, you know, you're very successful.

7:40You're good at what you do. But when I got guys like Derek Butler and other guys coming in here, bark it at me. Darius, Darius. Darius, you know, Darius Butler, you know, you bark it. That's where I draw the line, okay? What, Darius? You have a problem with Darius, but not with me? I've got a problem with Darius. Hold on, hold on. I don't have a problem. No, I know what you're doing here. I know what you're doing here. Did you know that? No, no, baby. I know what you're doing here. That's not what I, you know, you got Boston Connor, I think his name is. I think I just saw, you know, my, he had maybe a little bit of a glitch with my head there.

8:14But no, it's not that. Listen, you know what? I know what you're doing. Is that way embarrassing you right now? Well, a little bit. Hey, welcome to the Thunderdome, man, dog. I know you've been doing a lot. Hey, listen, you know what, pal? I've forgotten more about sports than you know, okay? Hey, you know what? When you're number one in the ratings book for 35 plus years, then you come talk to me, okay? You guys don't know shit about Sid Luckman. You don't know anything about YA Tittle, any of the greats. You're going to come out here. You're going to talk about Travis Kelsey. You're going to talk about Taylor Swift.

8:44You're going to do all that mumbo jumbo. Fuck you guys. What? What? What happened?

9:01Pat McAfee:That really escalated quickly. Connor, what the hell happened over there, dude? I have no idea. I didn't even realize Ty wasn't here today. Really? Yeah, I, for some reason, just figured he was going to come in before the show. So when I sat down, and lo and behold, Mad Dog walks through that door to sit down next to me. I did not expect that. Ty's not going to be happy about that. Ty's not going to be happy about any of this. Dale Earnhardt died. What? Really? Yeah, Dale Earnhardt died. Get him. Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of things that just got sent there by Mad Dog, and that's what he's mad about.

9:27Pat McAfee:Wow. What was it? Was it because we talked Travis Kelsey and Taylor Swift?

9:30AQ Shipley:He doesn't like talking about those new guys. He's kind of stuck. If he talks about 35 years, he's kind of stuck in the past, probably 55 years ago. So, yeah, bringing up Travis and then Taylor, obviously, I don't think that.

9:41Pat McAfee:Yeah, but he kind of brought it up, didn't he? That is kind of what these people do, you know, these types of people who are like, I don't like that, and then they're the ones that are bringing it up. All the time. Sounds like it's more on you than it is on us. I didn't expect that type of heat. Hopefully, Ty Schmidt will be able to find his way into the Thunderdome. Does he know where that goes? No idea. I don't know if Mad Dog knows where he is right now. He's so pissed off. Well, he's got that elbow that they almost amputated? Yeah, that he banged on his granite countertop, yeah.

10:07AQ Shipley:The gummies usually mellow you out a little bit.

10:09Pat McAfee:Yeah, normally. And also, when you're in a legal state, obviously, you do it. Not in a non-legal state. But usually, your walking's a little bit better. You got a little bit better feel. You know, you're kind of in there almost. You're feeling yourself. But I guess maybe Mad Dog just got a little bit too excited. Whoop! You know, on granite, on granite, on marble. It has that whole thing happen. It's older. Number one, the ratings books for 30 years. We know what that means. Sid Lockman. All right, so maybe Ty will make his way back here. Maybe Coach – not Coach. Maybe Mad Dog Russo will also kind of settle down a little bit and find his way back in there.

10:38Pat McAfee:Ty's not going to be happy about what happened there to that desk. No, he is not going to be happy at all. I do wonder the immediate reaction from Ty Schmidt after a couple of Iowa pennants go down. Iowa Hawkeye band members knocked off there. Obviously. Yeah, Stoner. Stoner's off? Yeah, Stoner's gone. I mean, there's a lot happening. Wow, holy shit. Lazy job. Ty Schmidt is here. Ty. Ty. I don't know. What happened? I don't know. I heard a big ruckus. I was taking an extra long pice in the bathroom before. I didn't time it up great with the show getting started. I come out here and my desk is absolutely destroyed.

11:13I don't know.

11:13Pat McAfee:Yeah, it's really interesting how the Ty Schmidt one didn't get knocked down, but everybody else kind of did get knocked down. Yeah, that was a gift. Yeah, I'm sure. Make sure that thing didn't get broken. Yeah, I'm sure. No, I just see, you know, popcorn bucket's gone. A lot of the other stuff is misplaced. I mean, I. Yeah, Connor. No, Dale Jr. is still good. Yeah, we're good. Excuse me. No, I mean, I just heard a big ruckus, and I don't know what the hell. I'm sorry I missed the top of the show. Yeah, it's the first time you've missed just from an absolute pice. I know. It's the other side. All right, well, it's great to have you back.

11:42Pat McAfee:Great to be back. Let's talk about football, shall we? Let's talk about the storylines. Something we've been noticing is there might be a little bit of a hesitancy to give Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears offense as much credit as they potentially deserve for the 59 points that they put on. And it's not just outside parties talking about it. It's also Caleb. So we put our nose to the grindstone. We open up a different vein of journalism that we're not used to doing. And, ladies and gentlemen, it's time to dive on in. Go clean up. We've got to go be truthers. Obviously, this is going to be our kind of worst game.

12:17I know points don't necessarily show that. But execution and, you know, the blocking and the penalties, all these different things. And so just being able to be a truther about who we are and go watch the film. That Carolina Panthers defensive tape is putrid.

12:32Pat McAfee:Whoa. Easy. He's got his notes over here. Blown coverage because of motion. Blown coverage because of motion. Blown coverage because of motion. Blown coverage because of motion. You lost contain. You lost contain. You lost contain. So what is that? Seven or eight clips? That's bad defensive football more than jaw-dropping offensive performance. Whoa, let's see. Let's see the sit-rep. Let's see the situational report, D-Butt. Is this ass offense scoring 59 points, or is this potentially a not-so-terrible start for the Chicago Bears?

13:07AQ Shipley:You know, when you put up 59 points, yeah, there is going to be a hand.

13:10Pat McAfee:A lot of pizzazz in that photo.

13:12AQ Shipley:We can throw the photo back. I'm very professional. I appreciate you doing that. Very clean, very clean. Sit-rep situational report, for those that don't know. I'm watching the line. Make sure you catch up on that. When you talk about special ops, Caleb is one of those guys. You're getting out there, he's an unbelievable quarterback. But when you put up 59 points for the defense, obviously there are going to be some shitty, very, very shitty plays. But there were a lot of very good reps from the defense, from the Carolina Panthers, that Caleb Williams just made unbelievable plays. This is one of them right here.

13:42AQ Shipley:We just call this a Houdini. What do you guys call this, AQ, on the offensive side of the ball? With Cole Komet coming across that. Yeah, some type of escort motion, jet motion. Okay. Boom, so right here, the Panthers do a great job matching this up, right? Play action, rolls out to the right. Houdini, you want to kind of pop out that backside. Usually that quarterback, tight end is wide open. He's not. He's covered, but Caleb does an unbelievable drop, throws an absolute dot right here on the run. So this is a play that Dan, this wasn't in his notes because this was a good defensive rep and just unbelievable play here at the top of the second quarter.

14:14AQ Shipley:Now getting to the situation report, we always talk about situational football, and a lot of times we see plays, we see highlights, but we don't see it within the context of the game or the flow of the game. So right here at the bottom of the screen, second quarter, 117 left, third and 11. So right here you need a chunk play to have a realistic shot to get points on the board. And that's exactly what Caleb wins. 24-24. 24-24 ball game. Obviously a high-scoring game. Neither defense is getting any stops here. And you're trying to get even more points going into the half because we know Ben Johnson's mindset.

14:43AQ Shipley:So third and 11, third and long. You let it run here. Boom. Caleb wins once again. Decent matches. Once you're at the top of the route, Everybody's pretty much covered up. Now he extends the play, gets out to his left, makes an unbelievable throw down the field across his body. It's not five quarterbacks in the league that can make this throw, and he does it a handful of times. You talked about T.J. Watt on defense, him making those ridiculous plays. Same thing with Caleb Williams. Now, this next play here, empty. So right here you kind of have two kind of zone-type players, and on the outside they're doing man matches.

15:14AQ Shipley:So right now you got three by two. So you got three receivers down to the right, and that's kind of where Caleb's going to look early and he's going to get back to Luther Burden on an in-breaking route. And a lot of times we talk about timing, we talk about anticipation with quarterbacks and he makes his throw and you'll see it from the back copy. He makes his throw fully trusting his receiver is going to be exactly where he's supposed to be and watch his throw. After he throws it, pause it, Foxy. Right now, when he's throwing his ball, he can't see the receiver. 62 is right in his face. Tooney's right in his face.

15:42AQ Shipley:So you'll see him peek around Tooney to make sure he's completed to see it. So he's trusting his offense. He's trusting his guys. This is kind of, you always talk about the Jared Goff of the offense. This is that. Get to the top. Make a throw. Once again, not a terrible defensive rep by the Carolina Panthers. And then once again, this is the very next play. Let it run. Get to the top of the drop. Guys are covered up. Okay, this is what I'm, now I'm going to be special. I'm going to use my legs. This is what you don't get with a Jared Goff type quarterback. Good pass rush, but he breaks it, ducks up out of there, becomes Houdini.

16:12AQ Shipley:So this is kind of looking into it. and now you get another touchdown on the board right before the half. But when you started this as a defense, 117 on the clock, we got them in third and 11. I feel really, really good about them on that side of the field. And then you fast forward, 30 seconds left on the clock, and he's running into the end zone, the touchdown. So Caleb Williams obviously had a phenomenal week, and we've seen a ton of the plays. But it's just more in the context of like a two-minute drive, a two-minute drill, the situational football, and him elevating his game and elevating that team to who knows what they'll be the rest of the season.

16:43Pat McAfee:I mean, 24-24 already. If Carolina gets the ball back, who says they don't go down and take the lead right before a half? That's obviously the middle eight is a huge part of the entire game. This touchdown could have been the thing that kind of sprung open the entirety of what the Chicago Bears did. Entire drive, a lot of great decisions, a lot of great plays. AQ, where do you sit at on the Caleb Williams-Chicago Bears discussion? They hung 59. I think that's a pretty good start to the season. Yeah, this is one guy I was completely wrong about. I mean, I thought to start the year last year, I was like, okay, I don't think this is going to go anywhere.

17:13And then you see him start to get better and better and better. And by the time he gets to the playoffs, he becomes magical, right? And so how is he going to take the next leap? He comes out this past weekend and looks phenomenal. So, I mean, again, the offensive line being better, the run game being better, more skilled players being better, right? I think all of that plays into this because running the football only makes quarterbacks better. They run for 290 yards. It just allows him to have the play-action game and have the drop-back game.

17:38Pat McAfee:Swift, one of the running backs, goes for the NFC Player of the Week, turns out. Obviously, Caleb thinks he can only get better. Joining us now is a man who we are so excited to watch and listen to as the number one color commentator for CBS, friend of the program. The reason why this is Watt Wednesday, ladies and gentlemen, future first ballot Hall of Famer. Maybe. Hopefully. We think. Ladies and gentlemen, JJ Watt. Yay, JJ! How you doing, JJ?

18:03JJ Watt:I'm great. I thought I was on the wrong show for a minute when I saw Mad Dog earlier, so glad to see Ty's back. I don't know if he's going to be excited or not to talk about the game that we had. But I'm happy to be here.

18:15Pat McAfee:Well, I think he might sound a little bit like Mad Dog if we talk about that fourth quarter. But it is nice to see you back. I don't know if you got a chance to see what happened. I haven't. Like I said, I just heard a big ruckus. No, at the break, I'll pop on Twitter and see kind of what the hubbub was about. Because JJ was saying that Mad Dog's face was kind of glitchy a little bit. And he looked a little bit like you in part of that. I don't know if you saw that. No, no. I told you I was taking a piece. over there.

18:39JJ Watt:Must have been quite the deuce. No, it was a wine. It was a pice. Yeah, it was like a 12-minute piss I was taking. It was not a shite.

18:46Pat McAfee:It was a pice.

18:47JJ Watt:I think that's a medical issue. I think that's a medical issue. No, I was too hydrated.

18:51Pat McAfee:No, I was well hydrated. Very clear. Yeah, you're super hydrated. I am. Thank you for taking care of yourself. You bet. Especially post-everything that happened. Yeah, exactly. I'm trying. Good for you, man. Thank you.

19:00JJ Watt:I'm going to have a seizure with these cutbacks here. That's a lot of cuts back and forth. I'm going to have a stroke on the show. That would be good television, though.

19:07Pat McAfee:Oh, now he's judging Foxy.

19:08JJ Watt:That sounds like a medical issue, JJ. You should get that checked out.

19:11Pat McAfee:Yeah, he's got a long piss. You've got a medical issue as well. I like that. I like that. Okay, let's talk about the game that you think Ty would potentially not be necessarily thrilled about, which, by the way, he's not. Doesn't want to give up hope. Obviously, a long season. But the Carson Wentz experience takes over CBS number one booth against the Green Bay Packers. Fourth quarter just becomes the most electrifying game that we've seen in some time. Can you tell me, as you were riding alongside the Carson Wentz experience, what was happening? And how did week one go with Jim Nance, brother, from your own perspective?

19:41JJ Watt:It was great. It was great. Had a great time. Minnesota, phenomenal atmosphere, divisional game. I mean, I would say, obviously, Carson Wentz steps in. Kyler Murray hit. It was brutal. Happy to see that he's okay and doing better now. But I would call it the Brian Flores experience. I mean, Carson Wentz stepped in and did a great job managing the game, managing the situation, putting the ball where it needed to be. But Brian Flores and what this defense did was truly incredible to watch. I have so rarely seen a defensive performance where it looked like there were 15 defenders on the field at any given time.

20:18JJ Watt:They were sending blitzers left and right and center. And there was just no answer whatsoever by that Green Bay offensive line, whether it's scheme. Sometimes it was by just pure pass rush moves. Cashman right up the middle at all times. Jordan Love was back there just trying to find.1 seconds to get the ball off, and he had nothing to do and nowhere to go with it. It was a thoroughly dominant fourth-quarter performance by Brian Flores in the Vikings' defense.

20:47Pat McAfee:They talked about his pressure, like 78 % or something like that, 73%. It was obviously the highest in the league. And I've got a chance, obviously, every day to chat with two guys that play NFL defense, you as well. I'm excited to hear your thoughts on this. When a defensive coordinator puts this much trust and power into his defensive players, what's the reaction normally and what's the downfall? Potential explosives ever topped with Christian Watson? But can you not also wear a team out maybe from bringing it like this all game?

21:14JJ Watt:Well, here's the interesting thing that Flores does with his defense is he also plays the most shell coverage behind it. Cover two, cover four, he plays these shell coverages. So he is basically saying, I know there's a lot of holes in this defense behind this pressure. I know that if you find those holes, I'm in trouble. But what I'm trusting on is my pressure in that front to get there before you have the opportunity to find those holes. And that is exactly what we saw happen. Jordan Love did find those holes a few times and he delivered the ball to those places. But more times than not, all day long, the pressure got there before he was able to exploit it.

21:51JJ Watt:And the point that you made about the ownership of the defense is a very good one. He puts a ton of ownership on this defense. All week long he was talking to us about how they put all those guys in the line of scrimmage. And they let them decide. If Green Bay looks like they're bringing in the right people to block it up, then they drop out into zone and they get to pick the coverage a lot of times. So that's Blake Cashman. That's Harrison Smith deciding what coverages they want to run. And when you have that type of ownership, then it truly is your defense and you love it.

22:20Pat McAfee:Yeah, if you have the players taking that type of ownership, obviously everybody's looking for a players-led locker room. Harrison obviously disappointed himself. He just alley-ooped a lad. How about him coming in, what, two days before the game? And all of a sudden he's calling coverages week one against the Packers, and obviously they get a huge win. They also bring in Kyle Van Noy, right? So it felt like, you know, let's get some vets in here that understand the system, understand the way we operate. And is this sustainable, I guess, would be the next question.

22:44AQ Shipley:And like JJ said, when you have that ownership as a player, that's big. Because the biggest disadvantage for a defense a lot of times is the quarterback gets to the line of scrimmage. They can see looks. They can see coverages. They can see the shell. And they can make all the adjustments. And then if you have a defense who's just stagnant, just stays in their call, you're assed out most of the time. So a defense like Seattle, they do a lot of communicating where, hey, we can just switch responsibilities. Or you can get here. You got different bodies. And Harrison Smith, that interception, like just getting that quick reroute because that's Jordan Love's quick answer right there from that look.

23:16AQ Shipley:Getting that reroute, him being behind. Harrison obviously not picking off but tapping it up. Tips and overthrows. He just creating more and more havoc plays. I love watching his defense. Now, obviously, if you give one up and you get Christian Watson, he can hit you for 80. That's the downside of it. But you want to create those havoc plays in the fourth quarter. You want that quarterback almost seeing ghosts even when you're not getting real pressure.

23:37Pat McAfee:Hey, J.J., I talked about it. Having Carson Wentz on one side of the field and B. Flo's defense on the other side of the field. This might be the most must-watch team in the NFL right now, depending upon how long this goes. But what a day for the Vikings. What a good three quarters for the Packers. Go ahead, Ty. Yeah, it was a great three quarters until that fourth one. But, Jage, I think the biggest talking point from that game, at least, and I don't know how – I'm curious to know how it felt in the booth. When the Packers take the points off the board, go for it on fourth down, go with the sneak, get stuffed.

24:08Like, as a Packers fan, I said to myself, like, oh, boy, they're going to lose this game. And then, obviously, is the next drive where you have multiple penalties where they looked like they were going to get off the field on third down. What did you think of that whole sequence of events? And did it feel like in the stadium, like, oh boy, the momentum's turned and there's no way that the Packers are going to be able to kind of reel this back in?

24:29JJ Watt:Yeah, no, this was obviously the biggest moment of the game and then the subsequent sequence following it. But Jim and I disagreed on what we thought of this play. And I think that was a lot of fun in the booth being able to have, he doesn't like taking points off the board at all. And I completely understand that side of it. I said with Green Bay's struggles last year of closing out games, I liked that they're were going for the jugular here that they were saying let's go ahead let's go up by a couple scores here and let's put this one away now so i like that lefleur did that and i said this at the time the thing that i didn't like is trusting this standard regular quarterback sneak with no pushers and just thinking that you're going to be able to fall forward for a first down in today's nfl the quarterback sneak is something that you must practice and perfect and we have seen a lot of teams do it successfully.

25:18JJ Watt:They did not do it successfully here. You need a pusher behind. These guys are too big. Big Citrus himself said they wanted to test the rookie Big Citrus. They found out what Big Citrus was about. Now, to your point of the next drive, there were some certainly questionable calls that kept the drive alive. The biggest one, in my personal opinion, being the roughing the passer. This is not roughing the passer. This is not roughing the passer in any capacity. He doesn't hit him up high. He doesn't hit him down low. He goes to land on him and he braces himself with both hands, which is literally exactly what the officials tell you to do.

25:53JJ Watt:This is not roughing the passer. They should have been off the field.

25:57Pat McAfee:Okay, there's a lot of Packers fans saying the ref screwed him completely. Now, we have heard from a Packers fan who's given up on the NFL as a whole because of the refs. That's right. Which is a shame. It is a shame. Just done with the entire NFL. Yeah, not done with the Packers, but done with the league as a whole. And we're still going to watch ball. That's tough.

26:15JJ Watt:We got to get Wheezy back. We can't be losing Wheezy out here. Agreed. He's in too many headphones in the locker room before the game to not be a fan. Wheezy, come back, man.

26:29Pat McAfee:Yeah, Wheeze, for sure. We need you, Toonch, back in the NFL. But not just game day. Their entire lives leading up to this moment. Wayne, you've been a part of these guys' NFL journeys. We can't just have you give up on the NFL now because a couple of refs make some terrible calls, which we agree with. Fire man's coming.

26:44JJ Watt:Come on.

26:45Pat McAfee:I didn't see you rapping any Wayne in hard knocks. Go, DJ. That would have been incredible if he... Could you imagine drop some Weezy in there?

26:53JJ Watt:A million, a million. Oh, yeah. I mean, Weezy was heavy on the playlist. Imagine JJ going, six foot, seven foot, eight foot marks.

27:03Pat McAfee:That would be so incredible to watch JJ do it. Because, you know, when you flip into that mode, you know, the game... We've all seen you mic'd up. We love it. They picked the wrong guy today. You know, like all that shit. that you get into, you Caucasianing a couple Lil Wayne verses is probably out there somewhere. And we would like NFL Films, with your you would have to prove this, I think. We'd like NFL Films to please pull some Mike J.J. water rapping Lil Wayne during a game somewhere.

27:33JJ Watt:Is that right? A lot of Carter 3. A lot of Carter 3 on the soundtrack back in the day.

27:37Pat McAfee:Yes. NFL Films, you have been given permission here. We need it. It's in a vault somewhere. J.J. with Lil Wayne And we would certainly appreciate that. Okay, your time in Houston, I watched you down there, was legendary. You're one of only three people, I believe, in the bull ring of honor. What's going on down there? Let's head over to Hammer. Todd, Todd, Todd. Tone has a question for you. Yeah, Jage, one of the more surprising things from this weekend was, well, I mean, they're going up against one of the best offenses in the entire NFL in the Buffalo Bills, but they've had Josh Allen's numbers.

28:06What did you think about the Houston Texans' defense and what they did not do against the Buffalo Bills in week one? Are you worried about that at all?

28:14JJ Watt:First of all, I don't know what it is. Your picture is very clear. Your hair looks great. Maybe it's just because I don't see the hat on. But, I mean, you've got a nice look going on back there right now. I just want to give you credit for that. This is something that I was curious to see myself because we were getting ready for our game. I'm catching some of that. I'm catching some of the Steelers game early on. And it's going back and forth. It's a high-scoring affair, which surprised me, obviously, with the Texans' defense and what they've been able to do. So I'm very curious to see exactly what happened there.

28:44JJ Watt:And I did see the end of the game with the fumble at the end and the Bills defense being able to get off the field to win the game for him. Ed Oliver, such a massive piece of that. Whenever he's not out there, you can tell such a big difference. But I'm not sure. It seems as though the Texans offense was able to do some of those things that people were questioning and wanting to know. But Josh Allen and the Bills offense must have had some good answers, eh?

29:09Pat McAfee:Yeah, eh? I'd say Joe Brady also shirtless in the postgame there. A lot of the lads from the Buffalo Bills said that was the first time they've ever seen him shirtless, I guess. I guess with some of the rookies maybe if they end up. How do you look? Not bad. Completely shaved. You know how in Wolf of Wall Street, how Leo does the speech where he says, from here to time, no hair. That's what Joe Brady has going on. He is a Florida boy. I don't know if he was using the lotion that you rub on your body. Nair. Nair. I didn't know if he was nairing because, I mean, that's fresh. There's no way.

29:40AQ Shipley:Nah, Joe Brady ain't near.

29:42Pat McAfee:You don't know? Not a single hair on him. I mean, maybe he might have jumped into a bath of nair and got that thing off. I don't know how he did it. He is a Florida boy, though. Got to understand that. Had a nice chain. Was not scared of the moment. And on a sideload, I liked his demeanor. Because we're used to McDermott. McDermott's super serious. Joe Brady and the lads were absolutely losing it in a huge comeback win. 3-13 left on their own four, down one. What does Josh Allen do with it week one? Todd. So it could be a Buffalo Bills year. And obviously they're debuting a brand new stadium tomorrow night.

30:14Pat McAfee:Cannot wait to be talking to somebody who's live from there tomorrow during our show. That's right. Going to be a part of the big day. Excited about that, JJ. We have a big surprise. Somebody's going to be live from the stadium for us for the first hour of the program.

30:29JJ Watt:I'm excited to see that.

30:31Pat McAfee:Well, we were invited to do the whole show there. Okay. And then we kind of made an announcement that we were doing that. And then, you know, I think we all quickly realized, like, this is an Amazon thing. I don't know if we're going to be able to – this might be a tough thing.

30:43JJ Watt:You kind of do whatever you want anyway. I mean, just – yeah. So who's there? You're not going to share it with us? Kirk Herbstreit's going to be live from there. What? It's called a game.

30:54Pat McAfee:Kirk Herbstreit's going to be live from the new stadium. Yeah, as a representative of the Pat McAfee Show tomorrow from noon until 1 Eastern time, Kirk Herbshire would be there live from the brand-new stadium as we showcase this incredible investment into Western New York, which we are certainly pulling up.

31:11JJ Watt:You guys got a clear view? Do you guys have a clear view?

31:13Pat McAfee:So that's kind of the thing. We don't really know. Kind of figured it out. Yeah, surprise. Yeah, it's all mystery. It's going to be a mystery thing tomorrow, Jade. But we are going to showcase a new stadium because we like whatever this happened. Obviously, a city ownership investing in the future of their NFL team, we like. We think what NFL teams do for cities and for towns and communities is an overall positive. But getting that money to be able to do that is a huge investment. So we would like to celebrate that.

31:39JJ Watt:Got to get the Buffaloes on the show, right? Bison, Buffaloes, we've had this talk, whatever. But they look cool.

31:44Pat McAfee:Yeah, they do look cool. And I think we do have a plan to figure out just how tall they are. Okay. We got some stuff maybe in the works there. Let's not, you know.

31:53JJ Watt:Okay, tape measures. That would be one idea.

31:57Pat McAfee:Well, any more ideas you have, we certainly are listening at the moment, as this has certainly already been planned and put together before tomorrow. So let's just make sure that's all understood.

32:06JJ Watt:How many folding tables tall are they? There you go. There's another one.

32:11Pat McAfee:That's pretty good, Jage. Herbie, you listening? Herbie, we need you to get four to five folding tables and measure this shit out before you go live tomorrow.

32:18JJ Watt:What do you think? You think it's four to five? You think it's four to five folding tables tall?

32:21Pat McAfee:In my head, I saw four of those together. Are we talking just like standard five-foot folding table? Yeah, standard folding.

32:28JJ Watt:I think that's an accurate guess. Yeah, I think that's an accurate guess.

32:31Pat McAfee:I think four to five of them. Maybe four and a half of them. I mean, we're going to find out. I assume we're going to find out. I just automatically think back to ECW whenever they were just stacking those tables on top of each other. Yep. Just try to eyeball. Maybe it's only three, though. The baby one.

32:45JJ Watt:Oh, wait, wait, wait. Are you going like table on top of table or are you going long way tall? I was going long way tall.

32:51Pat McAfee:No, I'm going table on top of table because somebody's. Oh, okay. Yeah, I think it's more than that. I think it's more than that.

32:55JJ Watt:Because Herbie's doing an elbow drop for all of them.

32:57Pat McAfee:You think the big one is more than mom and dad more than that?

33:01JJ Watt:Yeah. I think if you're going just stacking tables on top of tables, I'm going to go with six to seven.

33:08Pat McAfee:Okay, for the big one.

33:09JJ Watt:Six foot, seven foot, eight foot. There we go. Bring it all back.

33:13Pat McAfee:Is that the chest or the top?

33:17JJ Watt:The top. You got to go to the top of the horn.

33:19Pat McAfee:Okay, so for me, I was going to the bottom of the chest just so. Okay, sure.

33:22JJ Watt:Why would you do that?

33:23Pat McAfee:because that's where it is that's where it technically starts personally in my head you know what i mean but you want to go to the how tall this is yeah i go to the top pete yeah stop you gotta go to the top so i'd say six i think okay so therefore i think two of those things are going to be the bison so you start doing some deductive reasoning from my numbers i got two tables on top of each other for how big the big one is okay i think that'd be a good size yeah no i agree they better not a lot of a lot of thinking here we'll see i know that's not your thing but You did a great job not thinking and calling a game with Nance this weekend.

33:54Pat McAfee:Excited to see you guys go throughout the rest of the season for however long that is. I don't think anybody has an answer on that, unless you do.

34:02JJ Watt:I don't. I know that I have the next two, for sure. I've got Patriots-Steelers this weekend, and then I'm off to Brazil. What?

34:10Pat McAfee:Portuguese. You should go learn some Portuguese down there. Okay?

34:13JJ Watt:I do. I do. Copa Cabana. Okay. A little Christ the Redeemer. See what's going on. A little Pele. A little Vinny Jr. here. Everybody down there.

34:22Pat McAfee:Wow. Ronaldo. Neymar. Yeah. Ronaldinho. Bruno Fernandes. Oh, Bruno Fernandes. She's some recruiting. Yeah.

34:32JJ Watt:Some good food. Looking forward to that.

34:34Pat McAfee:Hey, don't go to the gas stations, right? You know what Ryan... Yeah, Lochte. Well, that was horse shit. Don't be like Lochte at the gas station whenever he was over there. Because I do think that was kind of on us. It was. Even though the original reports was Brazil, terrible place. Yeah. This and Mary, and then the story comes out. It's like... Ryan was like, yeah, yeah, don't do it. Yeah, he was like, please don't talk about this kind of on me. So I think you should have a blast down there. Would you like to go live from now? We'd like to have a – Do you have some polling tables with me? Yes, please.

35:03Pat McAfee:We'd love for you to do that. Okay, let's get to the game you're calling this weekend. Go ahead, Con, man. Yeah, J.H., how do you feel about Steelers, Pat? Steelers win, huge win against the Falcons at home, cover the spread. Patriots kind of, you know, got off to a good start against the Seattle Seahawks and got suffocated by Mike McDonald. What are you thinking for that game? how you see it going and what is kind of your expectation going into Gillette on Sunday?

35:25JJ Watt:Yeah, I mean, obviously, currently the big story is A.J. Brown being out. That's going to change what the Patriots offense looks like and how they operate. Maybe they get Travion Henderson back, which can help open up the run game, open up that play-action game and get the ball down the field more. But we all saw what happened at the end of that game with the three interceptions, and that's certainly not how they wanted to start the season. And now as a player, I sit there and I think, OK, they had a long time off since that, about 11 days. That can be a good thing in one way where you get to look at the tape.

35:55JJ Watt:You get to, you know, what went wrong? How can we fix it? But I'm a personal guy where I want to get back out there as quickly as humanly possible to try and get that bad taste out of my mouth. So that's a long time to sit with that game. Steelers on the other side. Offense, you know, they didn't run the ball that great. They did try to move the ball down the field much more than they did in the past. weren't very successful down the field, but at least it looked like a little bit of a concerted effort. I believe Aaron Rodgers had the most air yards of his time as a Steeler. So they are trying to do that.

36:28JJ Watt:And then their defense, they kept it extremely simple. I don't think they ran a single snap of man coverage. They only ran two blitzes the entire day. But you had TJ with two sacks and a pick six. You have Alex Highsmith with two sacks. Cam Hayward had three batted balls. when you're able to rush four and just play coverage behind it and still get to the quarterback, that's dangerous.

36:49Pat McAfee:I didn't watch every rep. Was TJ on this side every time? Because I know they were trying to think about moving him and dropping him back. What was he doing?

36:55JJ Watt:No, I believe I saw the numbers this morning. I think he played six times on the right side, and he did get one sack off of the right side. So they are making concerted effort, and he did move over there and find success.

37:05Pat McAfee:He was kind of hesitant, right, because he felt like he was maybe wasting reps. Like, hey, I'm over here. Why are we wasting any snaps over there? I've already proven I can do good. That was a real hesitancy right out of him.

37:16JJ Watt:Yeah. And then another thing that they did was they limited the number of snaps. So he played the least amount of snaps by far in his career. I think it was only 38 snaps. They rotated all those guys, Herbig, Highsmith, Jack Sawyer, TJ, and they rotated all of them, kept them all fresh. And the production was there on only 38 snaps. You got two sacks, three TFLs, a pick six. I would say that that's a good thing for the coaching staff going forward so that he doesn't continue asking for more snaps because when you can point to the tape and say, look what you did with these minimal ones, that'll make him buy in even more.

37:53Pat McAfee:Listen, it turns out that whenever we just beat him down with other guys and then you pop in there, it's a little bit of a shock to the system of these offensive linemen to see T.J. Watt pop in there. Hell of a start to his season, new campaign under New D.C. and obviously a whole new era in Pittsburgh. Now, talk about a new era. Well, they kind of went backwards. Kansas City Chiefs looked vastly different than they looked in the last couple years. And a lot of people are saying maybe it's because EB got back there. Travis Kelsey said on the New Heights podcast that since day one of them working together with EB coming back, that all they kept saying is run through a mother...

38:30JJ Watt:Can't say it.

38:32Pat McAfee:Sucker. Motherfucker. He said mother suckers, but with an F. Oh, okay. And if you look at the, we put stars on it across the bottom when it runs across the bottom of the scroll. We put mother, M-O-T-H-E-R. And then we put star F, star U, star C, star K, star A. Apostrophe S. Because I do believe that is how Travis said it. I don't know if that's all of you.

39:00JJ Watt:Good job. Because when we first started, when I first started coming on this show with you guys, there was the counter. and the counter was the goal was to be at zero and i do not think that counter has been close to zero in a long time so impressive by you thank you getting back we raised a lot of money for that

39:17Pat McAfee:swear jar you remember that we were raising like good 50 50 000 100 000 for people there you know we were trying to do our best we still let it fly you know mad dog russo dropped one earlier and then he told us he didn't like swearing that was certainly something uh and he had a heavy dose

39:31JJ Watt:of it early this week i'm trying to remember if it was monday or tuesday but there was a heavy heavy run of him. You got a case of the fucks? I don't recall. It might have been when Dan Orlowski was on, but I don't recall. I think it might have been. I think it might have been.

39:45AQ Shipley:Or when AJ was trying to shit on the overreaction Monday. That's what it was.

39:53Pat McAfee:Very warranted, by the way. That doesn't count. What he was doing was disrespectful to sports, I think. And he knew that in real time. And then he tried to change his tune and then he caught himself in a lie or two. You know, AJ wants to be reasonable, you know, because he's so he's such a friends with Aaron and Aaron always comes on and goes, I know you guys have your overreaction Monday. You know, he kind of puts it down. AJ forgets. He's been an active participant in that. Oh, yeah. Five, six, seven years. And he said, I don't like us doing this. Okay. Okay, H. And then he said, I canceled the Titans.

40:28It's like, that's, didn't you just remember that?

40:31Pat McAfee:Oh, yeah. They say crowned a team. I'll tell you what, I might have crowned a team after hearing what Travis had to say with an A or an ER at the end of that thing. Go ahead, D-Butt.

40:37AQ Shipley:Yeah, I don't know if it's an overreaction coming out of week one, that Monday night matchup. You know, we expect the two contenders out of AFC West, Broncos, Chiefs. We look – new look Chiefs for sure. But Broncos side, are you more concerned about them, more excited about the Chiefs? The offense looked terrible. Defense couldn't tackle. So what's, I guess, your reaction from that game from both sides?

40:58JJ Watt:You hit the nail on the head. My two biggest questions are the tackling of their defense, which I think that is something that you get significantly better at over the course of the season, and especially when you have a display like that on week one. The point of emphasis this week for that defense is going to be so heavy on that. They will be better. The other question is the offense and Sean Payton and the plate calling and Davis Webb and how long that goes. I mean, you saw the question asked at halftime. You saw Sean's answers. We'll see how the second half goes. And, you know, when you've got one of the best play callers in the game who is not actually calling the plays, it's a question of how long does that go and how many opportunities do you get?

41:36JJ Watt:And I'm not a fan of making rash decisions or overreactions after week one. But that question is going to come up, certainly, if the offense looks that way again. And so we'll see the chief side. I mean, the way that they ran the ball and literally almost had the point of saying we are only going to run the ball on this first drive was a very clear, concerted effort to set a tone. And Kenneth Walker is going to tote the rock quite a few times this year, it appears.

42:03Pat McAfee:Yeah, I think Kenneth Walker, obviously AFC Offensive Player of the Week. Congrats to him. TJ Watt, AFC Defensive Player of the Week. Congrats to him. Evan McPherson, Special Teams AFC Player of the Week. quite a trio there as they celebrate week one success. They just gave him the ball, what, first six snaps? And then you go back to what Travis said on that New Heights podcast, every single day we've been talking about running through people's faces. It's like that is certainly a nice culture shift. AQ, you said you love to hear that, and that was kind of the Kansas City Chiefs problem. It felt like since Biennemi had left.

42:34I think the biggest knock on them over the last couple years is the fact that they haven't had much of a running game. They've tried. They've tried to stay within 10 to 15 runs just to kind of keep the defense honest, but they haven't had a power run game. They haven't been big in the 100-yard-plus running games, and now all of a sudden you come out and you have 170 yards rushing with Kenneth Walker. You bring him over from Seattle. He was fantastic, and it wasn't all just the offensive line. A lot of that was him. I mean, think about the fourth down play where he bounced. A lot of that was him.

43:03He was supposed to hit that thing downhill. They got stuffed kind of. He bounces it and turns it into a huge game.

43:07Pat McAfee:I forget. I think it was 62 of his 89 first-half rush yards came after contact. It's like, yeah, that'll do. Of course, 14 missed tackles. 28 missed tackles is a total right for the Broncos' defense. And then you go to the offensive side there. You're talking about Davis Webb calling plays. Rappaport came on yesterday and was like, Sean Payton understands that this could be a little bit and it might take a while for Davis Webb to do his thing. He was like, well, he did an interview with Miss Lord halftime, so you can ask me at the end of this half, you know, because the plan could be let's have patience, let's have patience, let's have patience.

43:35Pat McAfee:But that's the second worst offensive performance for a Sean Payton team since like 2000, whatever, I forget the year forever. It's like, how long does that, how long is that leash for Sean Payton in real time? Because in theory, it's fun. It's going to take him a little bit to get used to it. But when you're standing on a sideline, just watching shit happen, it's like.

43:55JJ Watt:And this isn't, and this isn't a team that's trying to, you know, coming off of a rebuild or anything like that. This is a team that possibly is in the Super Bowl if their quarterback doesn't get hurt last year. So this is a team that has to take advantage of a window that they are in right now. And if it looks the same way in week two as it did in week one, you know there's going to be some conversations to be had there.

44:16Pat McAfee:Yeah, you'd think there'd be a little bit of heat. You'd think there'd be a little bit of heat. Let's go over to Seattle.

44:20JJ Watt:How did you like Monday Night Football? How was it?

44:24Pat McAfee:I enjoyed it, man. It was cool to be a part of. It was cool to be a part of just like Monday Night Football. It's so ridiculous. I mean, much like you and everybody else that are sports fans, I grew up in an NFL town in Pittsburgh. Like, my house, the tone of the house for a week was normally set by the Pittsburgh Steelers. So, like, Port L. Stewart has a bad game. Thanks, Slash. We don't eat good for the next five days because Tim McAfee's pissed off and the entire town is pissed. But then if we win, you know, life is good. So, being a part of Monday Night Football is just absurd. Like, it is just a crazy thing.

44:56Pat McAfee:And I felt that while I was there. Now, as soon as Monday Night Countdown's over, get off the field, get up to a bus. You know, so we miss a couple things there early. then we're allowed to come back down for the final 130 do the halftime show get the hell out so i might buy a ticket to these next places so i could maybe like watch the game i think that'll be something but it was all it was an honor to be a part of if that makes sense and i feel you probably feel the exact same way as what you're doing with cbs yeah oh absolutely i mean it's it's

45:24JJ Watt:it's the greatest job you could ever have i always say like i'm sitting on the 50 yard line in the best seats in the entire house and they're the best games every single week like what more could you possibly want i get to talk to the best players on the team and i get to talk to the head coaches the coordinators every single week i am living and i get paid to do it yeah like it is the coolest best thing of all time and i'm i'm very fortunate and thankful to be in it i know you feel the same way it's such a cool honor yeah it's a celebration of ball like and then

45:53Pat McAfee:the fact that i get to be a part of the biggest college games on saturday just in the atmosphere there is so cool just to experience all these different places can't wait to be at old miss this weekend. That's going to be a lot.

46:04JJ Watt:You lose a lot of money this weekend. I think I saw it. Yeah. Lost a little cash. Yeah. Good from like 70 yards.

46:11Pat McAfee:Yeah. He was unbelievable. Kid from Indianapolis. So I like him. Connor. Bang. Yeah. 1.2 million there. 600 ,000 to building tomorrow. 600 ,000 to his pocket. And then at halftime, or I'm sorry, third time out of the first quarter, live during the game, Tito of Tito's Vodka wanted to offer up a million dollar donation if he was able to do it again. Kid does it again. So he raised like$1.1 million for building tomorrow. $500 ,000 for the Central Texas Food Banks. And then he earned himself$600 ,000 on a day. Over$2 million coming off this kid's left foot.

46:44JJ Watt:You're a bad guy. But you're a bad guy. Yeah, I'm the worst, J.H. I've actually heard that. There was a headline this morning. How much was it? One week, that was what? That was like a million two to charity? Something like that? No, more than that.

46:58Pat McAfee:No, one one. Right? $600 ,000 No,$1.6 Yeah,$1.6 to charity I think if you were to put it together Shout out Tito, by the way And Home Depot coming involved

47:11JJ Watt:Casual Saturday, no big deal

47:12Pat McAfee:Oh, they had$500 ,000 for Dan Lanning To the Sam May Sam May Foundation for Cancer Research He added in another$50 ,000 Now that's never going to get talked about again Because they lost to Oklahoma State Yeah, so Dan Lanning doesn't even want to play

47:27AQ Shipley:Game like seven tries too

47:28Pat McAfee:Yeah, a lot of tries. Well, he had no connection, so we couldn't really talk to him. So that was kind of a bummer, especially because how much AT &T has invested in, you know, game day and everything like that. That's AT &T connection to Dan Lanning. Right. And then you see when the connection drops a couple times. You can see how that'd be AT &T thing. That was an ESPN game, though. So that was – True, true. So I think it was, you know –

47:53JJ Watt:You got Ole Miss LSU this week? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Ooh, baby.

47:57Pat McAfee:Yeah, this one's been brewing. It's my first time down to Ole Miss, and we're announcing the guest picker tomorrow, I do believe, on the show. It's a good one. The guest picker. This is a – Any hints? No hints. No hints at all because I don't want to give – I would like it to be a pretty massive surprise whenever it happens, but this will be very well-received. Well – I was going to say, people will be very surprised. I think so. I think it will be – I'd like to say very well-received, but – You never know. There's always going to be a group. It's going to be sweet.

48:28JJ Watt:It's going to be a live tiger, guys. It's going to be a live tiger.

48:31Pat McAfee:Well, I don't know if Ole Miss will let a live tiger in there, but maybe there is a tiger tie. That'll be a clue that could be real and could not be real. Yeah. Okay. Let's go to the Super Bowl champions, though, shall we, as we continue to chit-chat about NFL with the number one color commentator for CBS for the foreseeable future, J.J. Watt. Super Bowl champions had a huge storyline take place, but it's so long ago everybody's kind of forgot about it. Go ahead, AQ, with the last question. Yeah, JJ, the Seahawks lose Sam Darnold early. Drew Locke comes in. Now that he has a week to prepare as a defense, do you prepare differently when you have a guy like Drew Locke who may not be a Carson Wentz as a full-time former starter, a guy that's going to be a fill-in backup, but do you prepare any differently when you have a guy like that?

49:17JJ Watt:A little bit, but you really can't because you'd be doing yourself a disservice. I mean, the natural, immediate feeling is to be like, okay, lean a little heavier on the run game to play action, try and make it as quarterback friendly as possible, especially when you have a defense like Seattle has and they know that they can control the game that way so that you may not have to do as much and take as much on. But, I mean, you watch that game and he's making deep throws. He's putting some in tight situations. It's not like he's a guy who can't go back there and do it. So if you're not preparing like he can do every single thing that Sam Darnold does, then you're doing yourself a disservice.

49:54JJ Watt:But do I think they're going to just completely unleash everything? No, but you better be ready in case they do.

50:00Pat McAfee:I like how Drew Locke stepped in there, Jage. I don't know how many people have the mindset to be able to do that. Now, granted, there's a lot of great backup quarterbacks throughout the history of this league who I think get mocked and ridiculed because they're backup quarterbacks. But backup quarterbacks mentally and physically have to be able to do so many things. That's why there's normally a backup quarterback that will travel or be around for a long time. Have to give a great look. have to be able to make every single throw, have to learn so many different offenses each week to make it look natural, have to be a good communicator, have to be liked in a building, have to be liked by the quarterback, have to do homework assignments for the starting quarterback.

50:33Pat McAfee:And, oh, yeah, you've been standing on the sideline for an hour and a half, two hours. You've had no reps with the first team. You have no idea what's supposed to happen. Now you're in there. Figure it out. And it's like the mentality that that takes is a special one. And Drew Locke, I think we've seen it since the beginning, maybe perfect timing for him to be their backup quarterback up there in Seattle, Jage.

50:52JJ Watt:Yeah, and let me tell you what makes that guy's job a whole lot easier when he steps in off the bench cold. Jackson Smith and Jigba, Cooper Cup, like this offense. Yeah, you go out there and you've been throwing the second team or the scout team all week, and then all of a sudden you step out of the game field and you pass the JSN for five yards, and then boom, to the end, you're like, oh, that's pretty nice. I like that, so I should just give the ball to that guy, and we're going to be just fine. So it certainly helps to be able to step into a beautiful situation like that.

51:21Pat McAfee:John Schneider has built a good one up there, hasn't he? Oh, yeah. Yeah, he's built a good one. Now, we do know he likes to have a good time. Oh, yeah. So he likes to have good things happen so he can have a good time. But this McDonald guy, he might go down, you know, later in life as one of the ones. Wins the Super Bowl so early, so he's already legit, right? I mean, resume is already legitimized. Super Bowl winning head coach. And it feels like he's only getting started out there. They go for sale. I think new owner having Schneider and McDonald in there is a huge piece of the value. Do you agree with that or no?

51:55JJ Watt:Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you're coming off of a Super Bowl. You just won one. You've got a young coach who's a brilliant mind in the game. You've got a GM who's built two Super Bowl winning rosters, who's proven to be able to do it time and time again. Yeah, I would say being able to secure those two guys in a league where a head coach is almost as valuable as the starting quarterback, if you got the right one, like very, very worth it.

52:21Pat McAfee:Good for the Seattle Seahawks. You know, other teams have to be wondering how much they're worth. You know, they start looking at these sales. How much did they go for? How much did they go for? Wait a minute. What is the time? Is the time now? We shall see. New ownership.

52:33JJ Watt:You start, that's actually, I saw this the other day with Sean McVay where somebody was asking, I think it was Les Snead, how many first round picks would it take to give Sean McVay? At what point are we talking about some of these head coaches and like the, hey, starting quarterback money is 70 million and the top head coach is making 20? Like at some point, is there a like, that number is going to double quickly or, and because they're also not within, you know, the same constraints.

53:00Pat McAfee:So we thought that Denver would do it, right? Because they basically are the wealthiest family. The Walmart family is obviously the most amount of money in the NFL ownership group. And Sean Payton, whenever he was up looking at places, he was looking at Arizona Cardinals. We assumed no way Cardinals ownership is able to do the same as Denver. From the beginning, what we thought was going to happen ended up happening with him going to Denver. And they did talk about what they were able to offer to all the coaches. Vance is still there. I mean, people have been wanting Vance for a long time. He's defensive coordinator.

53:29Pat McAfee:I think he's making a ridiculous amount of money. I think that is a weapon that ownership groups who have deep pockets certainly have over the others because there is no cap. But to your point, do we know exactly what these guys are making and what their incentives are? I don't know. No.

53:44JJ Watt:I mean, we don't know exactly, no. I mean, I know that the rumored top coaches are somewhere in the 20 to maybe 25 range. That's just rumors and what the numbers on the Internet say. But come on. Like, if they hit a real free agency, like, what are you offering up for a Sean McVay or a Mike McDonald or a Kyle Shanahan?

54:05Pat McAfee:Or a Shane Steichen, you know? Well, you don't have to do that. Well, I just don't know. I just don't know. We like Shane. We would like Shane to be here forever. But Shane Steichen and Mike McDonald are not going for the same asking price. Well, Sean McVay was also added in. Bingo. You add him to the Mike McDonald area. Okay. Shane Sykin ain't going for four first-round picks. Highest-paid NFL coaches, says Sportico. Andy Reid, 20. Harbaugh, 20. Sean Payton, 20. McVay, 19. And a lot of these guys could potentially have in their contracts when a new deal is done, I am definitely within the top five.

54:42Pat McAfee:So you see the 4-4 there, McVay and Shanahan. That's probably a top five money no matter what happens to the new deals for anybody else. Those types of things do happen. Top money no matter what happens with anybody else. Coaches are able to work like that. Once again, coaches have no salary cap either. So to JJ's point, if you want to pluck somebody and give them more money than anybody else, you can certainly do that if you have a deep-pocketed owner.

55:04JJ Watt:Now, you know who should be making more money? Somebody do it for Tomlin next year? Somebody do that for Mike Tomlin?

55:09Pat McAfee:Maybe. He's great on TV thus far. I hope he doesn't leave, but maybe. McDermott. Mike Tomlin has a lot of wins. McDermott's done a great job here basically explaining who he is, what he wants to become, what he was with Buffalo. Didn't woe his me. No. No, not at all. Which we appreciate. We appreciate him not woeing his me at all because obviously he had a lot of success up there. Firing him did seem like, wow, who are you going to get on the other side? Then they got to shave Joe Brady out there. Just kind of living his best life. You know who deserves more money though, Jage? Uh,

55:44JJ Watt:by Schmidt?

55:46Pat McAfee:Certainly. I mean, I like a little negotiation here. Wow, thank you. You're a good lad. You're a very good lad. How about Tyler Owens, JJ? Yeah. This man, let's give him all of the money. We saw your tweet, obviously,$5.7 million. I would cut off an appendage for this guy to be one of my gunners. What did you see, JJ?

56:03JJ Watt:So when I first saw this, I was on the plane on the way home from Minnesota. and somebody sent me this clip and they were like just watch this clip and so i'm watching the clip at the beginning wondering like is this guy gonna get pancaked on a double team is he gonna get driven into the water coolers and so i watch the clip and he beats it off the line a little bit first oh wow he splits the double team that's nice then he stiff arms one straight down to the ground with the opposite hand holy cow incredible stiff arms the other with the other hand i'm like dude two stiff arms in one play no way and i look back i'm like there's no way he's gonna actually make this tackle, right?

56:34JJ Watt:Not only does he make the tackle, it is a pile like picture perfect. I was not kidding. I was not using hyperbole. I was not exaggerating. That is truthfully one of the greatest start to finish NFL plays that I have personally ever seen. That is as teach tape as it gets. One down, two down, make the tackle, effort, intensity. If you're a coach and you did not show your team that clip this week, you're insane.

57:02Pat McAfee:That's right. That's JJ Watt. We're back on the other side. You're the man. Goodbye.

57:57Pat McAfee:Football! He's the absolute greatest and we're so incredibly lucky that we get a chance to chat about it. It's not just me. No, the Talks table is here. Back looking regular. At Boston Conner and at Ty Schmidt. Con man, not a bad first hour there of the program. I feel like we should gas ourselves up a little bit. Yeah, no doubt about it. J.J. Watt's always awesome. Watt Wednesday is fantastic. And we were just talking about it, too. The sit rep from D. But first of all, letting me know Lioness has a new season out. That's great. But also just learning more so about the teams. And the Bears versus Panthers.

58:23That was kind of the game of the week. So seeing more of that is great. It's always nice to tell Dan Orlovsky, like, hey, shut up.

58:30Pat McAfee:Well, it wasn't just us saying it. Chris Mad Dog Russo was also here. Dan Orlovsky responded to the tweet from Chris Mad Dog Russo. He said, feels like there are some compliments in there from Mad Dog. Did you hear any of that from Mad Dog? Because you got a chance to listen back because you obviously weren't in here at the time. No, he basically said that Dan Orlovsky existed. What did that sound like? Do you remember what it sounded like coming out of Mad Dog's voice? Yeah, I think he initially said, you know, Dan Orlovsky was a good quarterback. I shouldn't say he was a good quarterback. He was a quarterback.

58:58He did backbattle a little bit. He looked like a DB almost. Almost. So, you know, just saying that he was a quarterback, I don't know if that's a compliment. And then he also called him a cheapskate, too, which I know Dano doesn't necessarily love.

59:13Pat McAfee:Yeah, here's Dano's response to it all. I actually think there's a compliment or two in here. It's like, nope, you're wrong. I don't think there was, but we do love Dano. Yeah, absolutely. And Dano is Dano, always will be Dano, and we've got to understand that, And that's why we love Dan O. How about him with his notebook? It said week one at the front of that. So he's going to toss that out and then he's going to week two.

59:35AQ Shipley:That notebook would be full by week three maybe.

59:37Pat McAfee:Five subject? I think he's one per. One per week? It said week one across the front of it. As if he was quarterback for an actual game coming up, just taking all his notes. He was flipping through. He flipped, what, eight, ten pages that one time? Every one of them had something on there. Brian's a tape? Yeah, he certainly does. Not all of them, obviously. Let's skip a couple games. Yeah, I wasn't able to watch. Sorry, I didn't see the Titans. Sorry, I'm not looking at that one. I don't know what to tell you guys. I saw some lowlights, I guess. They're not good. I'll get to that by the end of the week.

1:00:06Pat McAfee:He's never watched. No. No way. He is never watched. And why would you? He might not see the Tennessee Titans one time this year. There's a chance. Let's go to nine-year NFL vet, Darius J. Butler. You know, we did the shite division yesterday. That got actually pretty good response, pretty glowing reviews. Okay. Might have to continue that thing. Any of these teams in here you see prone to make a run out of it? For instance, maybe the Indianapolis Colts this weekend against Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football, Week 2 in Arrowhead. There's a chance, you know, that the Chiefs maybe fall back after what they just did.

1:00:37Pat McAfee:Kenneth Walker runs wild. Obviously, Derrick Henry did that this past weekend. Actually kind of impressed and pumped that no Baltimore Raven won the AFC Offensive Player of the Week. Because three of them could have. Lamar could have, Derrick Henry, and Zay Flowers could have. Are we able to make a big jump Week 1 to Week 2? Not just the Colts. Let's talk about the entire shite division or all these teams. Are these teams going to make a big jump between week one and week two? That's always like the cliche thing that is set up.

1:01:03AQ Shipley:Yeah, looking at this shite division, for me, you look at teams that you expect to make a run. I would start from the bottom going up. You obviously expect the Los Angeles Rams to get their shit together. Maybe they were just the sleepy Rams. Maybe it was a terrible play in the golf area. A little snoozy. 24 hours before the game down in Australia. What do Rammys dream of when they take a little Rammys snooze? Oh, wait. Are those the uniforms they're wearing on Monday? Oh, no chance. Yeah. I don't know. Weren't those uniforms they were wearing when you were at that Chiefs-Rams blowout or shootout?

1:01:38Yeah, Monday Night Football way back. Football game way back. Did they look exactly like this?

1:01:42Pat McAfee:I don't know. But they didn't have Stafford IQB. That is a dirty graphic. So we would assume that Dirty would have it accurate. And I don't think we need to be saying Savannah Bananas with the Los Angeles Rams. I don't know. Because, yes, they are a spectacle and they are a show. But the Savannah Bananas wouldn't have gone down to Australia and laid an egg. They would not have done that. Jesse Cole is not going to have the Savannah Bananas down under not having their best game. But there is a chance that they grossly miscalculated the travel. And they just did not show up. Myles Garrett potentially on a bum knee.

1:02:13Pat McAfee:Wasn't able to be an impact. He goes on IR with the surgery. But the Los Angeles Rams, we assume. Now, granted, the Giants are a ground-and-pound football team. Dallas Cowboys had two drives in the second half, scored on both of them. Didn't matter because the Giants just kept the ball away from them. I guess there's a chance the Rams could come back to life, but there also is a chance the Giants are for real, D-Bone.

1:02:31AQ Shipley:Yeah, they look like a very good football team, a physical football team. Mike Tomlin spoke after the game, and he said, I've been watching that team or that game plan, that game script, for 20 years with John Harbaugh, and that's what everybody expected him to be. Jackson Dart, I thought, looked great. Now, kind of like same thing Dan was saying, a lot of his great was the Cowboys defense also looking absolute shite. But I thought he looked very good. I thought he looked very comfortable. I thought Nagy did a great job with him. Week one, Greg Roman designing the run game. Obviously, they're going to be a physical bunch with Patrick Ricard and Big Scat back there.

1:03:02AQ Shipley:So if Jackson Dart can stay upright and continue going through his reads and being comfortable making those throws, I think they can be great, especially with the defense on the flip side, the pressure that they put on on the front. They're going to help those guys on the back end continue to get better. So that should be a good game. But I do expect the Rams to bounce back. Obviously, you have a great coach at Sean McVay. You got a reigning MVP with Matt Stafford. And we may see 99 back on the field for the first time in a long time for that defense, which will give them a jolt of energy. So I expect the Rams to bounce back.

1:03:31AQ Shipley:Colts as well. Now, the Titans and the Browns, you know.

1:03:35Pat McAfee:A lot of people are putting the Colts just right in there with the Titans and the Browns. No, I won't do that.

1:03:38AQ Shipley:I won't do that.

1:03:39Pat McAfee:At Arrowhead? No, but I'm saying people are saying that. Like, not us because we're here in Indianapolis. and I'm a season ticket holder. But being that, we did get to watch them. There's a lot of people saying they're a little bit worried about the entire culture of maybe the Indianapolis Colts and not being able to get back on the horse. What's concerning? You do get embarrassed. Yeah. That was kind of an embarrassing loss. A lot of veteran guys on that team. Yep. A lot of very good football players on that team. Yes. I assume they will bounce back. Having to go to Arrowhead with this brand new mentality that they had a few years back is a tough task.

1:04:11AQ Shipley:We haven't played the Chiefs well, though. Every time we match, regardless of what their record is, even when they were on that dynastic run, we've kind of always played this team well. And I think Patrick Mahomes, he's coming to this season with a huge chip on his shoulder, too.

1:04:24Pat McAfee:I believe in Danny Dimes. Me, too. Absolutely. I believe in Danny Dimes. He got unlucky early with that turnover. Boom, kind of deflects, and then a pick happens. And then defense can't get a stop for the life of him. And he's got to sit there and just watch Lamar Jackson saunter around.

1:04:41AQ Shipley:Maestro.

1:04:42Pat McAfee:Just sauntering around. He's got his towel in the back. Okay, I do like the towel in the back because it looks cool. But him, like, using his towel in the back while he's walking around, just is, like, just so awesome. That's how we do it. Right into the thing. Okay, here we go. Right up to the – this is week one. Okay, we're supposed to be learning some stuff. Right up to the thing. We got a motion with this guy. Then I'm throwing the tight end out there. Then the running back's going out the other side. Hi, he. Bye. Zay Flowers touchdown. It's like, wow. You're not supposed to be this smooth, this on time, this comfortable week one with a brand new offense like Declan Doyle has for him.

1:05:23Pat McAfee:But I think Lamar's investment all offseason, I think Lamar knew what was possible with Declan Doyle. And I think Lamar was excited for it. And I'd assume Declan Doyle, hey, first time play caller, guess what you got? Oh, you got a Madden video game player as your quarterback. This guy can throw the ball better, 99 throwing and then running, best ever do it. So good luck out there. And, oh, yeah, he is a football IQ genius. Savant, he's going to be able to figure it out for you. It's like what a dream for Declan Doyle to come in and they executed as if the Colts weren't even on the field.

1:05:54AQ Shipley:Yeah, flawlessly. And that's what, you know, that never gets – he never gets the right amount of credit for that, for what he does between the ears and his passing. I think after this game he became the all-time NFL leader with passer rating at like 102.4 or some shit like that. But he's dealt with, he's learned under a bunch of different coordinators. And he's won MVP on the Greg Roman system. He won MVP in Todd Monken system. And now he's with Declan Doyle. And it started great. That was your biggest takeaway, Pat, was all the pre-snap, the motions, the shifts, and all the things that you're doing, moving a defense, especially a Lou and a Romo defense who has a bunch of adjustments and they want to see things and have different things.

1:06:29AQ Shipley:So once you move a guy or shift a guy, you got to change, you got to communicate. And he was just in total control. This is my first time really watching him. You know, he's been in the league forever, but boots on the ground. And we talked about it in the suite. Like, it's like, oh, should we get to watch Lamar? We get this experience. And it was an experience. Like, okay, this guy's just better at football than everybody else.

1:06:49Pat McAfee:Yeah, and it was obvious. Yeah. I mean, it was, like, very evident that that guy was the best football player that maybe has ever played on that. No, Peyton. Okay, let's not get crazy. I don't know. Peyton, obviously, goat Rushmore. Shout out to Eli and Peyton last night, by the way. He had some magical moments. But just Lamar Jackson just doing Lamar shit, and then Zay doing Zay stuff, and him on the sideline, no helmet, no gloves, and you look up at stats, he's already had 150 yards. It's like, we got two quarters left. What? This guy's not playing the whole half. If he could have 300 yards, and then you look at Derrick Henry, Hall of Famer, oh, yeah, he had a career day as well, ran himself in a record book.

1:07:26Pat McAfee:It's like, wow, I guess we were lucky to be here, but it didn't feel like that in real time. Felt like we were on the complete opposite end of that. We still don't know what this Ravens team is going to be. We don't know what any of these teams are going to be. Hopefully the Colts are able to bounce back. Well, yeah, and who knows? It's just week one, but I think if you are a Colts fan, I think there is a chance that the Ravens are going to do this to a lot of people. We're probably not too far away. Declan Doyle was the OC in Chicago next year. That's the next thing is the cup of coffee with Sean McVay.

1:07:53Anyone who's taken a piss next to Ben Johnson or been involved with his offense at all is going to get opportunities to be an offensive coordinator and then head coach, et cetera, et cetera. I mean, like, you know, pretty good performance for him to start. And obviously, you know, when you have Lamar and Derrick Henry and Zay Flowers doing what they're doing, like, that certainly helps. But I think there is a chance they do that to a lot of teams.

1:08:14Pat McAfee:Yeah, I hope. You know, that's what Colts fans are certainly hoping. And I would like to see this Colts team get back to what they were. Sunday Night Football in Kansas City, that is an incredible environment. Felt like a college environment. So I enjoy the hell out of that. Can't wait to watch. Joining us also every single week like it has for the past few years. Ladies and gentlemen, let's go into trenches with a 12-year NFL Super Bowl champion center. Ladies and gentlemen, A.Q. Shipley. Howdy, baby. A.Q. A.Q., each week, you know, we ask you, what's your big takeaway from the weekend that maybe hasn't been chatted about?

1:08:44Pat McAfee:Obviously, you normally stay with the fatzos, the big guys in the trenches. For you, though, what was the takeaway of week one with this offensive explosion and potential full buy-in to the run game by a league-wide? Obviously, a lot of points. The run games were fantastic. but the biggest takeaway that I took away is the big narrative over the years, and I've been very heavy on this, is that rookie offensive linemen can't come in and play right away. We had six rookie offensive linemen make impacts immediately. Let's start with the Ravens and Venga, Yawani, the Penn State product. Look who he's going against, Pat.

1:09:16It's the Indianapolis Colts and DeForest Buckner, the$100 million man. Let's watch him move DeForest out of the way, twerk him outside, Derek Henry hits it. I didn't see any twerking either, right? A little torque.

1:09:27Pat McAfee:A little torque. Oh, torque. Yeah, Pittsburgh accent. You said torque. I thought you were saying torque like booty on him. Because I didn't see him putting any booty on him, but I did see him putting. Two hands and torque his ass out. Torque.

1:09:39AQ Shipley:So he torqued his ass. Torqued his ass. Oh, 54 gave him a little love, too. Yeah. And by the way, the 54? Yep. That's his first start. So good things are coming for the Colts defense. That's his first start ever in his NFL career.

1:09:51Pat McAfee:We had a linebacker that had 42 snaps that didn't record a single stat. So I was just trying to figure out which one he was on, that particular one. We need him to dive on a pile next week. He was all over the field, though. Yeah, but nowhere near the ball. We need you near the ball. Topic and cardio. Okay, who else, AQ, should we spotlight some of these young guys? This guy, he is track practice out there. How do you do that in linebacker? Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen, is the linebacker that could be able to give us an answer live from Natic in Ohio as we continue these rookies playing like vets from the offensive line.

1:10:20Pat McAfee:Take away with AQ Ghibli. Ladies and gentlemen, college football national champion, Super Bowl champion, Ryder Cup winner, AJ Hawke. Howdy on zero. Welcome, AJ. Great to see you. You look fantastic. Is this dude doing cardio? Is he trying to run away? You're right. You've got to get a J.O.P. at some point. You've got to get some kind of assist or anything. Who knows how they even give you pressures for all kinds of situations now, too. So you would think at some point you get there. Well, hold on. Hold on now. According to who? PFF. We get it. We understand. PFF is for sale. We don't know the current PFF and what they're going off of.

1:10:53Just so you know, this was actually released. The T.J. Watt pick six was a negative play for T.J. Watt, according to PFF. That's no way.

1:11:00Pat McAfee:No. Yes, it is. Yes, it is. Okay, so we won't talk about this. Even though I think it is easier to tell if somebody did anything in a game in 42 snaps as opposed to what their actual job was versus getting a pick six on a play and being an asshole and saying we're smarter than you are about football, that whole thing is a little bit different. But you have to try not to be in the middle of something in line. I was a punter, a kicker. if there was a pile near me, I'm falling into it. First of all, I don't want to get my knees hurt, but also maybe a half tackle. Yeah, sure. Maybe I pick up a little half tackle.

1:11:31Pat McAfee:Aren't you guys taught that as like kids at the linebacker position? And you guys normally have fun. 11 men to the ball. 11 guys at the ball every single play. That's the goal. Well, that didn't happen. So we need to change that, okay? We need to change that. But it could have also been because Lamar was actually just moving him with every single motion. They did six motions it felt like before every single snap. All right, guys, we didn't know.

1:11:52AQ Shipley:You should be able to run around 42 plays with a blindfold on.

1:11:56Pat McAfee:Okay, so this is like hitting water out of a boat. Yes. Okay, at linebacker. If he was safety, corner, you know, just kind of dropping out of things, linebacker's job is to be in the stuff. Yeah. I don't want to put your face in there. They ran the ball a lot, too. Yeah, they did. For a lot of yards, too. You know, it's not like they threw it 70 times. They ran the ball a lot. So we got a big jump from week one to week two. But also they had some great blocking we just saw. AJ, welcome to the program. We're in the middle of some rookies that are playing like vets. This is a big AQ's takeaway from the Fat Boys.

1:12:31Pat McAfee:Remember, there was a lot being said about the offensive lineman being like an epidemic. These young guys can't block anymore. AQ said vastly different things about this week one. Absolutely. Let's head up to New York. The New York Giants and one of their first-round picks in Sissy, Maui Noah, my favorite offensive lineman. It's CeCe Marinara. Well, I call him, yeah, exactly. You heard Baldinger yesterday. I call him Marinara. That's right. But look at the hand placement. Look at him run his feet and putting dudes on the ground, finishing on top. That's a rookie offensive lineman getting his first start in primetime football.

1:13:01Gets underneath the shade. Gets his hand placement. Runs his feet. Buries him on top. Big time.

1:13:07Pat McAfee:Okay, so we like the rookies getting a little dirty. Why do you think they're having success as we move to the next rook that was playing like a vet? I think as I go down this list, 44 college starts, 42 college starts. The next guy we're going to talk about, 54 college starts, team captain, Blake Miller. Again, one of my favorite linemen in the draft. Gets his first start at right tackle. Watch him pull around. Look at that big moose. Haul around the corner. Kick him out and get a big run from Gibbs. Okay, so you're saying a lot of football being played. Also, maybe a little bit more maturity because they're sticking around longer.

1:13:37Pat McAfee:NIL has obviously done some things to the college game, the college experience. We've seen a lot of quarterbacks with a lot of reps do well whenever they get in. And it sounds like what you're saying, even though there has been a lack of development at the offensive line position over the last 10 years, maybe that's changing slowly as opportunities are being seen. Well, I think as the run game started to increase in the NFL a couple years ago, we saw the yards per carry start to go up, all that stuff. It started to creep back into the college game. You started to see a lot more running game-centric offenses.

1:14:06And I think when you look at that, five years ago, let's say, these guys were never in a three-point stance. All they were asked to do is run the RPO scheme. I think we've gotten a little bit away from that. We've gotten more into the run game and more of a traditional offense that you see in the NFL. There is still that RPO element, but they are having to put their hand in the dirt and run. So it's almost like the best version.

1:14:27Pat McAfee:We've got an RPO. Jason Kelsey was so good, right, because he could pull and move. 100%. As a center. That's who he was. He could also get physical. It's almost like the RPO with the evolution of the run game. Good plan. We're potentially creating hybrids right now at the offensive line position. Is that what you're potentially seeing here early? 100 % and it matches up with the quarterbacks we're starting to see. You're starting to see Jackson Dart being able to move and run and get outside the pocket more like Lamar Jackson. Obviously, it comes from the Baltimore world, but that's the new quarterback, Caleb Williams.

1:14:52You can't just have these statues anymore. Everybody has to be able to move, even if it's just a little bit. You've got to be able to escape and get out.

1:14:57Pat McAfee:You know, a lot of people call this younger generation soft, you know, from our generation. I think maybe there was a generation that was softer. Then I think there's that next group. Sure. They might be – we might have some real – A couple junkyard dogs. This generation that is kind of coming through right now feels like there's even a group of them that hate phones. They're like an actual throwback group, I think, because they saw what happened to the older group of them. And I think the offensive line position is a good indicator on where we are as a society. I think there's a chance that we could talk about that, especially if it's taking place.

1:15:31Pat McAfee:How many rookies did you say were playing like vets? Six offensive linemen. We had the Texans. We got the Jaguars. We got the Chiefs moving forward. Keelan Rutledge, one of my favorite linemen in this draft. Reminds me of Ryan Jensen. Ed Oliver buries him. Then you get the Jaguars, Emmanuel Pregnon, right? He's a big monster. Third-round pick, fell to the third. Not sure why. Look at him moving people. Just moving people off the ball. And then we all heard about Khalil Benson from the Chiefs, right? This is a tryout player going out against Benito, locking him up, giving Patrick Mahomes a great pocket to throw from.

1:16:01Pat McAfee:Khalil Benson thing, last question from me, and Baldy gave us an answer yesterday about how, you know, there's a lot of headlines with that Indiana team. People can't actually slip through the cracks. I think he had an injured foot, too. I saw some people online saying he had an injured foot, so he wasn't putting maybe the best film out there. Nonetheless, he's 6 '6", 330, can play right tackle, right guard, and now he's starting a left tackle. How does he fall through the tracks and become a tryout player? Well, you don't want to get me going on the people upstairs and what metrics they look at, obviously.

1:16:29But this guy had 49 college starts on a national championship team. You think he can play football? Watch the tape. Yeah, why does that happen, though, actually?

1:16:36Pat McAfee:I know you had short arms. So that's one metric. Another one is, oh, well, he's a little stiff, so we don't know if he can do it. Or, oh, he can't pull and get out in space, so he doesn't fit this system. There's always one little thing, but at the end of the day, what I always say, turn on the tape, can you play football? You can't sit there and just pick apart guys. At the end of the day, if you look at the film and their football's pretty good, they're probably going to be pretty good no matter what level you put them at. Eight, nine o 'clock, right? 10 p.m. at night? Mm-hmm. That's the end of the day?

1:17:01Pat McAfee:Yep. You sit down, you watch the film. And you know what I do? What's that? I stew over all of those people. Oh, yeah, me too. That said, oh, his arms are a little short. Oh, he can't run a little faster. He's an inch too short. Willie Lampkin, we've all talked about him. My 5 '10", 5 '11", offensive line, he might get a start this week. Wow. Okay. That's what he does. He stews over it, goes and grabs the Jergens. Yep, that's right. Just absolutely pummels. Yep. You know, and then moves on to the next day. You were talking about Joe Brady and Lotion. I was thinking of, yeah, yeah, you can get it.

1:17:32Yeah, you're thinking, yeah, a little. Yeah, he needs a little slickness down there. Yeah.

1:17:38Pat McAfee:rubbing that thing raw. Stunts. That's the next generation, boys. Congrats, boys. Congrats, boys. We appreciate what you're doing for Ball. Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen, is a man who we also appreciate for what he's doing for Ball. Teammate of mine on Monday Night Countdown, Super Bowl champion, ladies and gentlemen. His brother's on Football Night in America. He's on Monday Night Countdown. I'd say job well done. Long NFL careers for both of them. Ladies and gentlemen, Jason McCord. What's up, fellas? What's happening? Hey, I'm still trying to figure out what you meant by I just by looking at me would be a sweater and you said I not can you just clarify a little bit more because I don't think I got a full answer there on Monday Night Countdown yeah all I was saying is some of us are a little bit more cooler than others like there's just a naturalness for me that we're out there in the sun is blazing there's nothing you can do about it you guys all had a towel and I'm just chilling like there's just something about that I don't know how you phrase it.

1:18:34I don't know what is the word for it exactly, but I phrase it as I'm just always cooler than the other side of the pillow.

1:18:40Pat McAfee:Okay, respect. Well said. Yeah, I respect. What do you mean?

1:18:43AQ Shipley:I was just, well said. You're always like, hey, why you got a hoodie on? I mean, you're out here, it's hot, it's flat. You know, different.

1:18:48Pat McAfee:Talk to him, D-Bus. It's different. What are you guys talking about? Who's talking to who? And who's them? What do you mean by that? You guys are very athletic. You said talk to them? Yeah, what are we talking about? Athletic build, AJ. Athletic build. Oh. Oh, man. Thin skin. I still don't know if I got an answer. But I think I know what you guys are saying. I think I understand what you guys are saying. I sweat a lot. I'm a sweater. Me too. AQ sweats a lot too, right? Yeah, big time. How about you guys? You guys sweat a lot? Yeah. Wow, that's crazy. Let's go to the back. Foxy. My armpits are sweating right now.

1:19:22Pat McAfee:Dirty. Dirty. Dirty. All right, let's move along. I thought that's what you meant. I'm happy we got there. Okay, good. Good. That would have been an interesting start to our Monday Night Countdown year. Sorry. You're awesome on there, dude. I think you need to know that. Obviously, you've been on our show a couple times before. We're all big fans. Listening to you break down tape and do your thing and also interact with everybody was cool. I can't wait to do the season with you. Now, on that note, let's go back to Monday Night Football. Chiefs and Broncos, what the Chiefs did, and I don't know if you heard, but Trav told Jason Kelsey, also awesome to be a part of in the Monday Night Countdown and the New Heights podcast.

1:19:55Pat McAfee:Since Eric Biennemi's been back, they've been talking about running through people's faces every single day, every single day, every single day. They set that tone early, and obviously Kenneth Walker feels like the perfect pickup. Are you all the way in on the Chiefs, or do you think maybe had their best night first night, and we shall see how it goes? There's just no way you can watch that game Monday night and not be all in on the Chiefs. And the reason I'm saying that is Patrick Mahomes wasn't even close to what he's going to be like midway through the season and even at the very end of the season.

1:20:26I was saying to somebody, we're sitting in that trailer throughout the course of the first half, and we're watching the game. Mahomes only threw four passes that went beyond 10 yards in the entire game. Only four attempts. None of them were completions, and they dominated the Broncos. So they were doing this, running the football down their throats without an explosive pass game, nothing to back the defense up, and they still were doing this. It was disappointing just to watch how bad the Broncos tackled. But in order to do that, it was how well Kenneth Walker was running. The amount of guys that he made miss in a phone booth and kept his feet going was very impressive, man.

1:21:04Just where they're at, Mahomes coming back. We were there when he ran out of the tunnel. It was unbelievable the way the crowd erupted. And to see him running for a touchdown and just having 15 back on the field, there's no way you can bet against the Chiefs right now.

1:21:19Pat McAfee:Yeah, and Kenneth Walker, whenever he came out of the tunnel, that was a cool little welcome to Kansas City moment for him, I would assume. And he certainly paid them back as their bell cow. Now, it wasn't just the Chiefs that were running the rock all over the place. It felt like there was a lot of 13 personnel, a lot of run. And Jay Mack, as we all know in the football world, when he can run the ball well, what does that do to those linebackers? What does that do? Oh, that sucks them up, Jay. Yeah, it gets them sucked up, you know, because they just can't wait to get down in there. You know, they're getting sucked up.

1:21:49Pat McAfee:Now, on that note, Connor has a question for you. Yeah, Jason, it feels like across the board, like Pat just mentioned, offenses were just ahead of defenses, and it feels like we're not accustomed to that early on in the season. Do you see defenses catching up? Do you think it's one of those things where over the next few weeks, maybe by like week six, week seven, there's a chance that defenses kind of lock it down, figure out some of these teams? Or do you think running the football in with how good quarterbacks are now, this might just be an offensive year, and there's a chance that defenses are going to be in for a long day with some of these teams?

1:22:20We damn sure better catch up from a defensive standpoint. I mean, the greatest Super Bowl of all time was a 13-3 game that happened a few years ago. Like, that's exciting football when you can see the chess match going on between the offensive coordinator and the defensive coordinator. It was an embarrassment the way defenses played in week one, and it wasn't just bad defenses. Houston played bad. Denver played bad. The Rams struggled in Australia, so they have to bounce back. The only excuse I'm going to give is maybe there was so many new, I think it was 21 new offensive play callers in the NFL this year.

1:22:55So I'll give an excuse for week one. For us guys on defense, we need to prepare. We need all the information we possibly can gather. For these now new offensive coordinator, a lot of first-time play callers, you don't really know. You're chasing ghosts all offseason. So week one, that was the reason they had the upper hand. And then on top of that, like, we don't play in the preseason on defense, so we're not really tackling as well as we're going to get as the weeks go on. So, man, defenses have to catch up. I can't keep watching football where there's 60 points in the game and guys are just doing dances in the end zone.

1:23:28Pat McAfee:Yeah, not only just dances in the end zone, 28 missed tackles for the Broncos, missed tackles across the board. And Hembo Stat says 166 plays were ran with three tight ends on the field in week one. That's the most in any week in recorded history. So when you talk about big athletic bodies trying to move, maybe a little bit smaller bodies on defense's side, is the offense once again regaining an advantage over the size of human beings on either side of the ball? We shall see. If the defense does catch up, though, that 13-3 game, I think, is going to be much more common than what we saw this past weekend.

1:24:02AQ Shipley:I ain't trying to see that shit. That's what's about to happen.

1:24:05Pat McAfee:I ain't points. Yeah, me either. To hell with that, J-Mac. Points. 13 personnel? I mean, that's going to be a lot of – I mean, explosive runs could happen, but we're expecting the defense to start tackling better. I wonder if that doesn't even count all the 6-0 linemen stuff, right? I don't know if that's even included in that 13-person. Jets had five tight ends on the field for one of their plays. Hey, Frank Reich kind of in his bag, actually. Go ahead, Ty. Yeah, Jason, I think it was maybe on Get Up this morning where you said, like, hey, this isn't a fluke. Like, the Jets might be for real this year.

1:24:37You think that they've improved quite a bit. What is it about that game? Because obviously a lot of people are saying that the Titans might be hammered dog shit, and that could be a big reason. But what did you notice from the Jets tape and also the changes that maybe Aaron Glenn has had since being a first-year head coach last year? Well, first of all, leave my Titans alone. It's a bad outing, but don't refer to us like that. We're going to get better. It's a work in progress. What I liked from the Jets was when you start to build in the offseason and you're starting to form an identity, what does it look like week one?

1:25:13And to me, they ran the football to Brees Hall, to Braylon Allen. They continue to do that. Geno Smith made a few big plays down the field. The rest of it was checkdowns, and they played good defense. They went out and they brought over veterans. The first play of the game, the Titans run the ball, and Demario Davis is flying downhill, smacks somebody, and gets up screaming. To me, that's who the Jets want to be this year. and albeit the Titans struggled. The Titans, the first kickoff of the game, the Titans kicked the damn ball out of bounds. That's how it started. I didn't know that. Hold on, Jay.

1:25:45I didn't know that. It's worse than we thought.

1:25:48Pat McAfee:That's worse than we could have imagined. Specialist. What are we doing? Holy shit. No, let's not blame the Titans. Let's not blame the kickers. You think Bones told him to kick the ball out of bounds? I think Salah maybe didn't do enough motivating to that guy. I'll tell you that, 53 and a third yard wide. That's hard to miss. Now, granted, I have kicked one out of bounds before. We all have, obviously, hit a fat. Can't be hit in the opening kickoff of the season out of bounds. Out of bounds. Stand up by yourself. That's how you start. That might be crazy. We don't know about it. 13 guys on the field during a touchdown, two guys running off the field as the Jets are running in the end zone.

1:26:30Good start. I like the idea, though.

1:26:32Pat McAfee:Yeah, he's trying to do the – Yeah, he is. Put him down. He's trying to do the tornado hurricane ball that lands in the landing zone. Instead, 15, they're still, they haven't started the season yet. They're still 15 minutes on that clock right there. They've already attempted, they already had a penalty. That's not good. Jesus Christ. Yeah, we are going to talk about your Titans. Colts aren't any better. I will say we paid a lot more money and we have a lot more continuity and we look just as as. But the Titans looked a lot worse than I think any of us thought it was going to look like. Now, a team that looked a lot better than I think a lot of us thought, but their fan base thought was certainly going to take place.

1:27:04Pat McAfee:Go ahead. Absolutely.

1:27:05AQ Shipley:We're not talking about the 0-2 Rutgers football team. Good luck this weekend. Oh, geez. Definitely not talking about those guys. But the New York football Giants, you were just talking about the Jets. Obviously a brand new operation with the Giants offensively. Jackson Dart looked great. Dallas looked terrible. Even defensively the Giants looked good as well. What's your thoughts on Jackson Dart and the New York Giants? Man, you get excited about them. And me and my guy, Peter Schrager, we were at training camp this summer, and we sat down with Pat Ricard after practice. And Pat Ricard said, we said, why did you come be a New York Giant?

1:27:39What was it about John Harbaugh? He said, Harbaugh called him and said, I'm trying to build a bully in the NFC East. That was bully ball on Sunday night. They punked the Cowboys. And this was a Cowboys team that all we talked about was new coordinator Christian Parker, all the new guys that they added. Caleb Downs is going to be rookie of the year and all of these other things. and they just ran the ball right at them. To me, watching that game, what was fascinating offensively for them, they started the season, I was like, what is this offense going to look like? They have Matt Nagy, who was the offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs, Greg Roman, who was the offensive coordinator a year ago with the Chargers, Brian Callahan, who was the head coach for the Titans and called the plays.

1:28:18You have all three of these guys on one staff. Like, how the hell is this offense going to come together? And Sunday night, it looked awesome. Jackson Dart throwing the ball from the pocket, over the middle, making those throws, but also getting in the gun, running the football, getting out of bounds, not taking a big hit. It was creative, but it also was just directly at you. Isaiah Likely looked like he could be the best tight end in the NFL just if he plays the Cowboys every week.

1:28:43Pat McAfee:Likely, John Harbaugh, allegedly one of his first calls was to Isaiah Likely whenever he went up to the New York Giants, said, we need this guy. We're going to operate and use him in the same way that any other weapon at the tight end position is utilized. You are by far our number one, as opposed to Mark Andrews, Zay Flowers, Derrick Henry, Lamar Jackson. You have an opportunity here to be our guy. And he showed up in a huge way in primetime. And remember, it was always like likely 80. The tweets were like, how many touchdowns is this guy going to score tonight? Likely 80. He always had those moments.

1:29:13Pat McAfee:Now it feels like it's about to be sustained focal point of the offense. And you mentioned the offensive coordinators. Who do they have over there? What do they have going on? They've got Callahan, they've got Roman, and they've got Nagy. Those are three former head coaches, all good offensive minds, except Roman. Tell me how he's good offensive mind, not a head coach. Could you tell me how you think those three kind of fit together and why they help each other? The reason it works so well is because Greg Roman is a run game guru, and he's worked with Patrick Ricard. He understands that's who he is.

1:29:40He likes fullbacks. He likes tight ends. So, cool, now you marry that up. Now you get the other two, and you can marry that up with the pass game. I think what has always made Greg Roman great is his run game, but what has been his biggest struggle is it never married up with the pass game. Think to whenever he was with Lamar Jackson. They didn't have a pass game that married up with the run game. Now you get these other two guys that say, okay, what do you want to do formations? What do you want to do with all your formations in the run game? Okay, cool. Now we can make those marry up and attach them to the pass game just like you watch Shanahan and McVay do because everything marries up.

1:30:10Everything looks the same. What is going to be an outside zone also is the play action, also as a screen, also as a deep shot.

1:30:16Pat McAfee:Now, they do have photos of a couple of those guys up in the booth, and they're calling them the goof troopers. That's what they're calling them. The disgusting brothers. Yeah, that's what they said, the disgusting brothers, which I'll tell you, I don't know if anybody's going to look good in the middle of the game whenever they're completely locked in up there, but will they all get along? Yeah, absolutely. They're winning. And Callahan's dad is arguably the greatest offensive line coach that's ever been in this game. So he has an offensive line background from that world growing up in that world.

1:30:46You add him in the mix. He's an offensive mind, obviously. You mix him with the other two. As long as those three can coexist, I mean, this could be special.

1:30:54Pat McAfee:Okay. John Harbaugh making great decisions as soon as you get there. Cam Scadaboo being healthy and doing a backflip on a pile on. No, he knew exactly where he was at. He's got a big brain. People know that about Cam Scadaboo. Big head for sure. Huge head, huge opportunity, especially with Ricard running in front of him and Jackson Dart being smart. The thing I mentioned to J-Mac on Monday Night Countdown is with the way they played, it did feel like Jackson might be able to survive until his era of not having paint on his face because that's going to disappear at some point. We don't know what – kids probably, we assume, whenever he gets rid of the paint on his face.

1:31:28Pat McAfee:But with this style of play, he's going to be able to make it to there, we think. We think – you know, we didn't know if he was going to.

1:31:33AQ Shipley:Yeah, I mean, and you got to – you can't take away his legs. That's a part of it. You got to have some design-run game. And obviously when things do break down in the pass game, you want to use those legs. But just take care of yourself. You know, take those shots. Your best ability is availability, especially as a quarterback. So I think he'll continue to learn that. You talked about all those coaches and all that knowledge that he'll be hearing. And then those weapons on the outside. Neighbors, he's not even back to fully himself once he gets – continue to come along. Then Isaiah Likely, I think we're just scratching the surface with him.

1:32:01AQ Shipley:It was some two-minute clips. They were in 12 personnel and just had him split out like a wideout. And that's a matchup nightmare with him. So as long as they continue to get on the same page. I was shocked at how well he operated from the pocket, though, and just like field throws. Like that likely throw across the middle of the field, like the safety's coming down. He kind of put it on that back shoulder. That's like 10-year vet type stuff. So it was obviously some blown coverages. But blown coverages don't matter if the quarterback doesn't see him and take advantage of him. Like people always say blown coverage, blown coverage.

1:32:29AQ Shipley:That happens a lot, and the quarterback just doesn't see it. So for him hitting those throws, being comfortable, and having a run game to lean on, and defensively being better, at least week one. I mean, I'm all in on the Giants right now.

1:32:40Pat McAfee:Yeah, they're fun to watch. And obviously three offense coordinators, I guess, better than one. Now, speaking of one offense coordinator, one's a super genius, and he was a head coach, and then he heads out to Los Angeles, and they look like ass. AQ has a question for you, J-Mac. Yeah, Jason, I was calling the game, and I got to watch the Chargers versus the Cardinals, and I'll tell you one thing that didn't look good was the Chargers offense. Can McDaniel and Herbert, can it work? That's a good question. I think so. You think about it for McDaniel. He was there with Tua in Miami, and he found a way to make that work.

1:33:12We all know how talented Justin Herbert is. I also think the offense that McDaniel brings over is very different than what Justin Herbert is accustomed to running. The timing of it, the rhythm of it, getting the ball out of your hands extremely quick. There's a lot of trust that has to take place when you're trying to get a guy in the NFL that's had a ton of individual success, albeit it hasn't been from a team standpoint and playoff wins. But for Justin Herbert, he's a guy that we know has the talent to get it done. So I would say week one can lie to you. I don't want to assume that it's going to be all bad from an offensive standpoint.

1:33:47I was surprised that they weren't able to get the run game going as much. That was something that I thought McDaniel did an excellent job in Miami, that regardless how Tua was playing, whether he was blowing it up, where he led the league in passing yards, I think that was in 2023 or a year ago, where he absolutely struggled. So Devon Achan still had a fantastic season and got paid. A lot of that because of the scheme in which McDaniel runs with Alec Engold over there as a fullback. They brought in a tight end in Kohler. So I expected that at least to get going and be something that they could lean on regardless of what went down on the outside.

1:34:23But they just struggled. And a ton of credit to the Arizona Cardinals, a team that were like, they're going to be 32nd. They're going to be picking first overall. Why the hell would you draft a running back this high in the draft? They went out there one week one, and don't look up, but Jacoby Brissett is leading the NFL in passing yards. Jacoby, my guy.

1:34:40Pat McAfee:Yeah, Jacoby's a beast. We saw him here in Indy. Only getting paid like$17 million as well. So that's very – That's great for it. Yeah, it's great for the roster. Mike LaFleur, we had him on the show yesterday. He's a psychopath, very evident, very clear psycho, which is what you're looking for at the head coaching position. And his offense looked damn good. We have some breaking news here, J-Mac, around the NFL. Joey Porter Jr. is slated to be a full participant today, which is obviously a positive sign to start this particular week, too. He had missed a lot of time because he was holding out, trying to get a new deal.

1:35:12Pat McAfee:Season starts. Pittsburgh Steelers say we are not negotiating during the season. Joey Porter Jr. was asked before week one if he thought he was going to play. He said, that's a question for the people upstairs and for my agents. We thought potentially never going to be seen as a Steeler again. Now he's full participant. What do you think this means, J-Mac? And how do you feel about how this situation has kind of all unfolded rather quietly, I must say, from a national attention standpoint? It has been quiet. This this one is tough for me. I think Joey Porter is an excellent cornerback in our league.

1:35:42The challenge is where does he slot in when you start to look at the top guys? Is he a 30 million dollar guy when you look at Gonzalez and Witherspoon and McDuffie and those type of guys? because the fact that Sertan's not in that group yet because he just hasn't got paid again, how do the Steelers figure out where he goes? It drops from like 30 straight to like 25. There isn't really anybody in that 27, 28 million dollar range. So when you talk about trying to get a deal done with him, when you're looking at the annual per year, where does he feel comfortable? Does it have to be in that 30 million dollar range?

1:36:17Because as I look at this from the outside in, I feel like there might be a hard number that they're just not able to settle on And now the question comes in, is he willing to go out there and play without that deal? Because they're a different team with him on the field. They brought in Jamel Dean, who's another tall, long, athletic cornerback, to go on the outside with him. You have those two guys out there, you're going to feel really good about playing man-to-man and playing press up in guys' faces. Every single one of these clips, he is mugged up on a guy and harassing them. That's the type of play that they'll get from both of those guys on the field.

1:36:51Pat McAfee:We don't need that clip there at the end against Colts. Obviously, we should be picking and choosing different ones, if that is certainly a possibility. But Joey Porter Jr. and the Pittsburgh Steelers may be closer to rekindling and having him on the field, or maybe this is a show to everybody else. Hey, he is healthy. You know, if they're going to try to trade, if that is still the conversation. Kind of pumped to see what the Pittsburgh Steelers and Joey Porter Jr. land on because they do a lot of stuff that they haven't done for a long time over recent years. They paid DK Metcalf$30 million a year.

1:37:20Pat McAfee:He never played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He's a wide receiver. That's very rare for the Pittsburgh Steelers to do that. Obviously, bringing in Aaron Rodgers, very rare move. Negotiating during the season, though, they've come out and said, we haven't done it. We're never doing it. Don't even think about it. Joey Porter Jr. is like, well, I'm thinking about it. So we need to figure that one out. We need to figure that one out. And obviously, the Porter family in Pittsburgh is held in high regards. He's a great player. They're undefeated. They're going for it. And if your front four can get there, T.J.

1:37:47Pat McAfee:Watt just won AFC Defensive Player of the Week. He obviously has a pick six and everything else that he's got going on. Cam Hayward's been playing out of his mind. Somehow he's gotten younger over the last couple years. Herbig, I believe, and Highsmith, they were on the field for like 20-some plays. It's the most they've ever been on the field together because they're rotating. It's like Steelers got something special potentially brewing. Now, offensively, they're going to have to be a little bit better, but Joey Porter Jr. back there certainly helps with it all. AJ has a question about an AFC North team that found its way onto our shite division, J-Mac.

1:38:16Yeah, unfortunately, he's talking about the Cleveland Browns. I just, from you, I know you spent some time there. Do Cleveland Browns fans have any hope for this team? And I guess, let's say six, eight weeks from now, what does that team look like? What does that offense look like?

1:38:28Pat McAfee:And this is the shite division as we stand right now. You can get promoted out of here and relegated into here all season long, J-Mac. Hey, Pat, it's tough seeing that Super Bowl winning Colts team there where they got to get to. So they got to find a way out of the shite division. At first. The Browns were rough. Like, watching them, you were waiting just to make it. It was 31-0. Like, somehow you figure, like, they're going to make a play at some point. And I think Todd Munkin said it after the game, though. It wasn't just Deshaun Watson. Like, that gets all the headlines and Shador Sanders.

1:39:03They were bad on both sides of the ball equally. Liam Cohen and Trevor Lawrence, they went up and down the field as they wanted to. I don't know where the hope comes for Cleveland Browns fans. Like, you think about the last few years when Myles Garrett was there and Jim Schwartz was calling the defense. They were always good on that side of the ball. They just weren't good enough on offense. That was just abysmal. And watching it, and it never got better. It wasn't until the absolute end when the game was over, when I'm coaching my son's team, and when you just start subbing everybody in because it's a blowout, then they made a few plays and actually got on the board.

1:39:40It was rough.

1:39:41Pat McAfee:Yeah, it was certainly ugly. and nobody would have expected that from the Cleveland Browns. No. You know, and – The Monkins boys. Yeah, Deshaun Watson came out and said, Mediac expects me to throw 500 yards, five touchdowns every week, so they got their own expectations, you know, so everybody kind of eats shit. He said that? Yeah. Yeah, he said it today. He said, I think the media has this expectation, I'm supposed to throw for like 400 yards and five touchdowns every week. Maybe just 100 and maybe one, you know, maybe just one of those things. That'll kind of get going. But granted, that's his first start in over 600 days, you know, And that's why when it was all happening, everything was happening, he was away from the game, wanted to trade and all that stuff.

1:40:15Pat McAfee:It's like, can you be away at the quarterback position with the way he played, which was very intuitive and also incredibly athletic and all that? Can you just miss years and years of football and then just get dropped back in there? I don't know. I think it would take a very, very special, especially with the amount of money we know he's getting paid, so you can certainly get comfortable on satin sheets and shit like that. It's like, I don't know if that's ever going to be found again. I don't know if we're ever going to dig deep into that soul and find what he was, whatever he was a potential MVP candidate with the Houston Texans.

1:40:49Pat McAfee:But I'll tell you what, Haslam said, we're going to find out, though. Yeah, we are certainly going to find out. Last question from a team that I think, you know, absolutely decimated a small cheese town. Let's go to Hammer. Don, time. Tone has the last question for you, J-Mac, as you get ready for big day with big shrinks. Yeah, Jason, I think you were in New England for a year, I believe, with B-Flow, who is now just calling unbelievable defenses for Minnesota Vikings. What are your thoughts on that matchup this weekend against Ben Johnson and one of the best offensive minds against one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL?

1:41:22That's the matchup I'm looking forward to most. You have a defensive coordinator that blitz 80 % of the time in week one against Jordan Love. 80 % is insane. And I think what I love most about it, and D-Buck, you can appreciate this, they're not even playing man-to-man behind us. It's not like he's just leaving guys on an island. They're still playing zone with eyes on the quarterback, and you have that going against Ben Johnson, who just put up 59 points and wants to lead the NFL in scoring. A season ago, they opened up, and these two teams played against each other. Flores barely blitzed in that game, and I think it was fear of the unknown, not knowing what Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams' offense was going to look like.

1:42:01That second matchup, he sent the house, and it was a normal Flores blitzing style of game. I think they're going to go after him. They're not going to allow him to sit back or run around. They're going to want pressure in his face and force him to make quick decisions. Don't give him all that time. Try to fool him with disguise and all of the different things, but his defense has been unbelievable. It's unorthodox. You watch and you try to figure out the rules of what they're doing, and you're like, this doesn't make any sense. and having Harrison Smith back there is huge because you need somebody on the field that can communicate the same way flow is communicating to those guys in the meeting room.

1:42:37Pat McAfee:J.J. Watt said they are in real time deciding what coverages they want to use with how the offense looks. The players are on the field. So whenever you say they're doing things that don't make any sense, it's like I think because the front and the back do not match. And I think that is what they're expecting and hoping for. If they're already doing that week one, that's only going to get better, right? You would assume?

1:42:55AQ Shipley:Oh, yeah. And that was kind of one of the things playing for like Belichick. Like you always had to be able to adjust. And playing for B-flow, obviously the same thing. You got to be able to adjust not only as, you know, a week to week, but between drives, you know. And we get that iPad or whatever, the surface on the sideline, like, hey, let's do it this way. Or this is the flavor of the week on third down. So when you're playing against this defense, you got to stay ahead of the sticks. And Ben Johnson, obviously he wants to run the football. You got to stay in third and threes, third and fours.

1:43:21AQ Shipley:Once you start getting those third and 11s and third and 12s, like now you're really in trouble because he can do absolutely anything. You talk about having these smart veteran players on the field who can also adjust to certain looks. Hey, this is a near. Okay, they switched to far. Okay, these are the numbers. So, I mean, it's going to be a great – it's going to be an epic matchup early in the season with these two guys.

1:43:41Pat McAfee:It literally looks like backyard football whenever we're just like, what are we doing? Blitzing. Okay, what do you mean? All of us. We're just going. That's what their defense looks like every single play. And Jordan Love just got sick of it, it seemed like. It just seems like he got absolutely sick.

1:43:55AQ Shipley:Big difference, too, as a DB. Like J-Mac said, we're not just zero. Just ask that. Like, all right, we're pressuring. If you don't get home, we're one-on-one. And if I don't get, you know, burden on the ground, it's out the gate. Like, when we have a little shell on it, so we know pressure's coming. But I can still play with some eyes. I can still jump some shit. I can still anticipate. You can still be there for that corner. Harrison tips it up. Boom, he's there. If he's a man-to-man coverage, that's just an incomplete pass. You go to the next place. So, that's a huge advantage as well as a defender.

1:44:21Pat McAfee:All right, J-Mac. I know you got a big day with big trades. Breaking down all the big plays. Yeah, yeah, it felt pretty good. Good luck out there. I'll see you in Los Angeles, brother. Yes, sir. See you, guys. Hey, that's far. At least far. At least far. That's your J-Mac, please. Hey! I'm off now. I said see you. Take me off the screen. What is this show called? What is Shreg's show officially called? Big play with Big Shrags. Big day with Peter Shrags. Traeger. Break it down all of the big plays.

1:44:59AQ Shipley:Yeah, it's Big Day with Big Shrags.

1:45:03Pat McAfee:Breaking down all of the big plays. That's what it is. It's coming up 2 o 'clock ESPN, Monday through Thursday. On Friday, it is not Big Day with Big Shrags. Breaking down all of the big plays. That's big paint with the bus, boys. That's on Friday. So, you know, 2 o 'clock hour, obviously cooking. Cannot wait to see what big day with Big Shrags and what big plays they break down with Big J, Mac, who's obviously an absolute stud. We've got about nine minutes before we get off of ESPN and head to our digital platforms, which we are very pumped that we get to do. You know? That's a pretty big deal, being able to just kind of carry over.

1:45:45Pat McAfee:Because first hour didn't hit the hard out, JJ. just kept going this one we are over time that's right but i don't want to put the offensive line rankings into overtime sure i think espn all the airports cafes and everything that are kind of cooking deserve to know that this might be the season of the big boys this season more so than any other year might be highlighted by the offensive lines and who can move bodies and what running backs can go crazy so this year it might be the most impactful version of this particular thing that we've been doing for years preparing for this moment maybe you know because last couple years who cares everybody said yeah kind of this year it feels like it's going to matter more than ever ladies and gentlemen it's time to go in the trenches with aq shipley with our top five offensive lines of week one.

1:46:41Pat McAfee:Let's start with 5AQ, the Detroit Lions. Welcome back to the top five offensive lines, Detroit Lions. Why them? Why now? Heck yeah, 165 yards rushing. New offensive line. They move Sewell over to the left. They got a rookie at right tackle in Blake Miller. Let's take a look at this. They're going against the New Orleans Saints. If we can pause this right before the snap. So here, let this run a little bit. Let the linebackers move over. There it is. You see that right there? and then you see the end man on the line of scrimmage there, D-Butts? Yep. What's that telling you? Blitz is coming, right?

1:47:11So if you watch Penny Sewell, so there, once that guy moves inside on the left guard, now Penny Sewell knows, hey, two's coming outside. Watch him take two for one. This is incredible. Boom, boom. Opens up the huge hole. Ben Bartsch and the rest of the boys just push everything frontside, and you just hit that thing a million miles an hour.

1:47:29Pat McAfee:So you're telling me that Penny Sewell was able to shed, basically, and then get to his next block while blocking both guys? He was also bouncing around. Was Penny Sewell bouncing around, Foxy?

1:47:39JJ Watt:Yeah, if you remember last year, Penny Sewell was right tackle. He moves to left tackle. But in this game, he went left tackle. He went right side. He went left side. He went right side. Kews, what the hell's going on, and how did he do on the left side? Because I know that's very hard for a tackle to do.

1:47:51Pat McAfee:Well, did you see what he just did? It looks like he did good, Foxy. Welcome to In the Trenches Top 5. Yeah, I mean, he was basically Tristan Wirfs. I mean, he made that transition smooth as can be. Two of the top five in the league. being able to go from right to left is not as easy as most people think, and he did it seamlessly. But here's the deal. Every time it was a short yardage or goal line situation, whether it was third and one, fourth and one, or goal to go, they put him at the right side at the point of attack and hit downhill plays. It was incredible to watch. Basically, you knew where the ball was going once he moved from left to right, and it didn't matter.

1:48:26He still moves them off, and they're able to get touchdowns.

1:48:28Pat McAfee:Okay, so is it tackle over? Tackle over is what they're doing, or did they just bring in another tackle, move him to wherever we were trying to run it? So they flipped sometimes, and then other times they leave Blake Miller at right tackle, put him at tight end. So he's basically the extra O-lineman then goes in at left tackle. Here's the interesting thing. If they don't get it in that goal-to-go situation, he has to come out of the game because technically he's the tight end. Or they have to run the same exact formation. Okay, well, Penny Sewell, first draft pick of this particular regime. Love that he's still a massive piece of it.

1:49:01Pat McAfee:Good to see the Detroit Lions back on top 5-0 lines, which is where they're supposed to be. Let's go to the number four offensive line. Congratulations, Monday Night Football Zone. Can't see Chiefs. Can't see Chiefs. Go ahead, AQ. Yeah, listen, I could have showed a million plays, but I love what Andy Reid does. He leans on Chris Berman, pulling a play. Boom, boomer? 1930 or something like that. They got Patrick Mahomes in a three-point stance. You got an offset back in a three-point stance. You got Travis Kelsey coming back. Let's watch this defense. Just pause it right there. Look at the DB.

1:49:34Go back, go back, go back. Just half a thing. Yeah, watch the DB. The DB has no idea where this ball is going. They're running counter back to the right with all the misdirection to the left. Play, play. And right there, 22 has no idea where the ball is.

1:49:47Pat McAfee:The ball is going to run right beside him, and he's looking to the other side. Is that legal? Yeah, I mean, that thing opens up very nicely. Andy Reid back in his bag. I like the Patrick Mahomes in a three-point stance and gets a touchdown pass from this to Kenneth Walker, who is obviously the new centerpiece of their offense. Kenneth Walker was incredible. I've talked about him for years. I know Foxy, being a Michigan State guy, I loved him forever when he was in Seattle. They did not utilize him nearly as much as they should have. He gets his first chance to be the bell cow, and he does a great job.

1:50:17I love that they went unbalanced line right there, too. So they moved the line over, and they get the tight end over there on the right. It was awesome.

1:50:23Pat McAfee:They were planning on punching people in the mouth from the offseason. They certainly did that to the Broncos. Let's go to number three offensive line. Congratulations, Don Under, San Francisco 49ers. They punished the Rams. AQ says maybe it's because of the offensive line. Well, Kyle Shanahan's maybe the most prepared coach in the NFL. He had these boys prepared. But let's take a look at this. If I can set this up real quick, obviously Trent Williams is a circle. That's who it starts with. But look to the right, right? You've got Luke Farrell and you've got Kyle Juszczyk and a Y and F, right?

1:50:48So we're going to send Juszczyk in motion. As we send him in motion, it brings the DB back into the box, and then we get everything pushed frontside. Design cutback with YNF going backside. And look at Trent Williams just handle the second level. It's incredible. Okay, so they're forcing the defense to fall right into what they want to do. Absolutely. And with that little motion with Juszczyk, it brings them back in. Guess what that does? Nobody really talks about this as much. Everybody just talks, okay, we got two double teams. But guess what else we're doing? We're able to hang on those double teams longer because it's bringing people back to you.

1:51:17Pat McAfee:Okay, so Juszczyk does a banana boat run. Everybody's saying the banana hammock is a little bit of cheating. Do we think we're going to see a lot of this or no? We are going to see a lot of this. I mean, they started to do it a lot last year, and they can do so many different things. It's not just sending them back that time. Then they got the play action. Then they start them one way, and they run the toss back to the right. It's a million things. Let's go to the number two offensive line coming out of week one of the NFL season. Congratulations, Baltimore Ravens. Yeah. We saw it. Yeah, we saw it.

1:51:43Pat McAfee:No offensive player of the week for the Baltimore Ravens. Could have had three of them, including the running back. What did you see, AQ? Well, this is a great play, and I love this. This is escort motion. So we're going to send 80 across the line, Snap the ball while he's on the fly. But check out. John Simpson, the left guard, just leaves the guy for him. ADD cleats him. Watch this. This is the hardest thing when you get line movement when you're running this. Boom. Gets him. Now watch John Simpson, number 74, left guard. Get back out. Boom. That's called being on the same page in week one. And then Derrick Henry all the way to the end zone.

1:52:14Pat McAfee:Okay, so maybe that was good design, not necessarily terrible ass from the Indianapolis Colts. Oh, my God. Really good design. I mean, this offensive coordinator is incredible. And look at 17. Chris Moore comes up off the practice squad this week, elevated for the game, and he's the one with the home run hitting block at the end of the play. Okay, congrats to them. Let's go to a team that had the NFC Offensive Player of the Week. They're running back, Swift. Congrats to him and the Chicago Bears. Number one offensive line. How come? What do we see? Well, they picked up right where they left off last year.

1:52:45291 yards rushing. Two 100-yard rushers. Let's take a look. We're going to get Colston Loveland over there. We're going to move Colt Komet over there. Watch this trade block between Cole Komet and Darnell Wright. Watch this. Boom. Put him back out. Make the block easier for Cole Komet. Now get up on the second level. Boom.

1:53:00Pat McAfee:Get the out block. Look at Luther Burden. That's the home run block. Wow. Everybody's all in on the Ben Johnson system. This is what the Detroit Lions were doing when Ben Johnson was the most sought-after head coaching candidate maybe in the history of the NFL. The Chicago Bears hang 59 in their offensive lines, the number one offensive line in the league after week one. Congrats to these five offensive lines getting the top five after week one. We're certainly proud of you. AQ, thank you for going in the trenches with us. And thank you for watching our program. We're so incredibly lucky that we get to do this every single day.

1:53:32Pat McAfee:It's football season. Life is great. Another week kicks off tomorrow for college and the NFL. One more sleep and more ball is on our TVs. Be a friend. Tell a friend something nice that might change their life. Goodbye. Man, I should have done one more big day with Big Shranks Nah, they do You got it Show the logo I feel like I did it on Friday too, but it wasn't their show Oh, yeah Remember? Well, hey, that's going to happen New shows everywhere, popping up everywhere How are you supposed to fucking keep your head on? Which we like more opportunities for people You know, there's some people that say like, hey, I got a job here I'd get it for the next 60 years And then when that ends I got friends that are going to be pissed about that I should be able to be here forever I got this job, so I get it forever?

1:54:18Pat McAfee:Is that how it works? I don't think so. Big Shrags knows that. Big Shrags knows. And that's why it's about to be a big day. So does Big Pate. Big Pate and the Big Bus? Yeah. Yeah, we like what's going on there on Friday. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Need to not show crowd, though. Okay? Right. They need to get that shot on them. I believe they're in an auditorium this week. With a crowd? Packed house. I would assume so. Okay, I think we should. If not, we should be pushing for a crowd, or we should not show, you know, because I believe Peyton and the Bussin boys have real motion. It's hard whenever you see nothing in the back, you know, and immediately people start attacking.

1:55:00Pat McAfee:I don't think it's the best setup for them, but I do respect and appreciate how much they are committed to ball, and I think they are going to be a great show. I do believe it's going to be a great show. Excited for that. And Big Schrags, I mean, we haven't seen any of his episodes because they're on the same time as us. our digital show. But from my understanding, Schrag's loving it, right? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Is he singing the Open? Is he doing Big Day? Not yet, but I think after the show today, maybe say, hey, got something for you here. I think you maybe need to implement this in the rest of the week and then in perpetuity until, you know.

1:55:31Pat McAfee:So, every time I say Schrager's name, if I say Pete, because Thamel, I gotta say Peter Schrager. Sure. I gotta do like full name. Right. It should be Big Day with Big Schrags. And he's big. He's a big son of a bitch. And he's breaking down the big place. Yeah. Isn't he, AJ? They can still change it. They can still make it. You know, there's adjustments every day. I don't think we should be, you know, making it. You don't think he wants to be known as Big Shregs? Why not? Why not? It's a big day, dude. It's a big day. Right. With Big Shregs. Breaking down all of the big place. Big big thing. With Big Shregs.

1:56:10He's got to do that. He's got to dance like that coming out. You know, he comes out from like around the screen. and he dances his way out like Ellen used to do. Yes.

1:56:17Pat McAfee:I like the dance break and rest in peace to Twitch. We appreciate everything you did to bring the juice to that particular program that had a hell of a run for a long time. A lot of stuff coming out of it, but nonetheless, they had great success, great pacing, and dancing was a part of it. That's where you guys want Big Shrags to pop out in big day? For me? I want him out of the desk. Like Gangnam Style. Yeah. Yeah. Smoke. Yeah. You know what I mean? That's what I would like. I agree. I mean, how is that, you know? Like Rey Mysterio coming up from the fucking, like Psy. Yeah. You know, Gangnam Style when he comes out.

1:56:52Pat McAfee:I think it's a cold open on the desk and it's playing a song. It's a big thing. With big strings. Breaking down all of the big plays. It's a big day. And it goes, boom. The big shrinks, you know, for the second one. Because you've got to have a little bit of a build-up. That's right. That's just the open. Oh, yeah. Now we've got 50 fucking nine more minutes. Yeah. I'm sure they built it into those new studios, don't you think? They had to build that little trap door. I saw Dan Rolopsky walking on a highlight reel. I didn't know how that was possible. I had a Skycam on him. I'm like, geez louise, Dan.

1:57:26Pat McAfee:It was sick. Yeah, unbelievable. Unbelievable studio over there. It's huge, from my understanding. And I like that they invested in that because I think they might be experiencing the same thing we're experiencing where the cameras might be a little bit too good for their actual system. So if we keep updating things, we like that, obviously. But I like it for all parties that they're investing in these things, you know, because there's a chance that some people in some positions, they feel like they're an asset to the company through the P &L sheet where they can just cut things. And they don't have to do anything.

1:57:59Pat McAfee:They're just sitting in an office, but they look like heroes because they save$7 ,500 over an entire thing. It's like, why don't we invest in things and see what that can become, especially with incredibly talented people. I'm happy they did that with NFL Live, back-to-back Emmy Award winners. But also NFL and everything like that, I like that. I like that they did that. I like that they get to experience that. They've obviously earned that with NFL Live, but also the NFL should be treated that way. Now, there is a couple times where Dano's looking up like this. I'm like, is it too big? I mean, from right there, that is massive.

1:58:31Pat McAfee:Miss Laura over here, obviously. Siciliano'd almost. Yeah, I mean, it looks like they're in a warehouse. But it is huge. And I think they're experiencing and experimenting right now with everything that's possible. But this is the future of studios, I think, is what they tried to build. And they certainly nailed it. Congrats to them. You're well-earned over there. That's right. Very well-earned over there. All right, let's get to a break. On the other side, we've got to wrap up everything. We also got everything DB. Good D. Hell yeah. No more bad D. We're only slinging good D around here this year.

1:59:00I like that. I like that.

1:59:02Pat McAfee:Positive. Yeah.

1:59:04AQ Shipley:Really? No bad D at all? Well, you kind of saw it in Caleb. The situation report. Oh, yeah. Sit rep. I did like the sit rep. What a great picture, too, by you, D-Butt. Thank you. Yeah, what did you think of that photo? What did you think of that photo? You're a professional. It's really, you know, what do girls call it? They call it a thirst trap D-Butt's putting out there?

1:59:22Pat McAfee:No, D-Butt's put out thirst traps before. He's gone shirtless. This is corporate. This is corporate. Yeah, you're right. This is how you doing. Should we use the 80s picture? That was a good little run that Instagram had with everybody doing their 80s pictures. You look super cool in the 80s. This one is very how you doing. This is a big how you doing right here. We asked them if you want to put sunglasses on, you know, because we could do that. He said, absolutely not. I want them to see these fucking eyes.

1:59:53AQ Shipley:No gimmicks.

1:59:55Pat McAfee:Listen, I got to the bottom of this sit record. Let me talk about this. Good pizzazz on that photo. Mm-hmm. I don't know about that, but...

2:00:04AQ Shipley:What do you mean? I don't see pizzazz there. Great pizzazz. Pretty straightforward. Yeah. Gas up the jet. I'm ready.

2:00:12Pat McAfee:Yeah. You're damn right. All right, let's get to it. Yeah, he does... Well, yeah, I guess he is telling others to do it to his jet there. You look fucking cool here, dude, bud. Appreciate it. Attorney. This does look like... Have you been hit by a truck? Yeah. Exactly. He's coming in there right now. You know what I mean? Look, the attorney Edgar Snyder has been doing it for so long. He will get you if you've been injured. No doubt. And you don't pay unless we get money for you. It's a big deal. You look like a lawyer there, which is good because you're special forces because we're doing sit rights.

2:00:45AQ Shipley:Exactly. The law of defense. Yeah, I'm talking some real shit right there.

2:00:49Pat McAfee:Yes, we are. Maybe you should call it shit-uation, you know, so we can say shit. Nah, I'd probably, Chuck, Chuck could probably put it on.

2:00:54AQ Shipley:Oh, yeah, we'll ask him.

2:00:55Pat McAfee:Hey Chuck, what did D-Butch do yesterday? You saw him in a situational report? Is that what I saw? I did see that D-Butch. I thought you did a great job. Great shit, Rob. Let's get to a break. He's in here tomorrow. I can't wait. Also, we will have a presence and be live. Yes. From the new Highmark Stadium tomorrow, which is kicking off a brand new era of Buffalo Bills football. We are honored and thankful to have presence there. Mm-hmm. Did you hear, AJ? I did hear. We got somebody like a – you're sending a proxy, I guess? No. It's a friend of the program. Our show is there. Okay? Oh, I know.

2:01:38I mean, he's an integral part of the show and of, you know, college football, NFL football, all of the above.

2:01:44Pat McAfee:Have you heard they got a little bit of a crate or a cage outside of the bison? They do. I saw that. Are they bringing in something that's dangerous? What are we doing? Well, they're kind of teasing maybe a real bison's out there with the fan. Let me see. Can we get a close-up of that? Is that sturdy? Is that a sturdy enclosure? Yeah, because this would be like a Ralphie showing up, right? And from the Ralphie? But what makes you think that it could be a real live animal is because they have that tarp that they're saying, oh, we've got to protect the animal, so here we go. The sun won't beat them down all day.

2:02:10I'm sure they have to fight people for that.

2:02:12Pat McAfee:You think PETA said, listen, if you're going to have a bison out in the middle of all these people, you've got to at least have a tarp over so obviously it'll get too hot. Yeah, who's going to come scoop up all the big dumps in there? Because that's going to get real smelly, especially if it's humid. I think they're just going to pick it up. I don't know if Brandon Bean will be doing that. Maybe Boyko will be scooping up the humid poops from the Bison. I'm not 100 % sure, but I think this entire thing is probably just getting put in a bag afterwards and never to be seen again. Just over the shoulder.

2:02:37Knowing these Buffalo fans, they might throw it at each other as a tailgater. Probably stink there anyways. I thought they were putting Marinci in there to wrestle other fans. Ooh, that's not a bad idea. Huge Bills fan.

2:02:46Pat McAfee:He went on a pretty good little tweet run saying how pumped he was about Super Bowl. Super Bowl, yeah. He's already got his outfit set out on his bed. He's going to stay there until the season. Well, his wife said he needs to look good. It's L.A. Yeah. How many days was it? I forget. I did the research. You did. It was, what, 200-some? 205 or something? He's ready. He's ready. I'm thankful for that. Hell yeah. Hey, we'll see you February 12th, Gabe Morenci. Yep. 2027. Love my wife. She said, what are you going to wear this year on Pat McAfee's show? I think we need to go big. I told her, you read my mind.

2:03:20Pat McAfee:Super Bowl's in L.A. again. My 25th year of rage. Congratulations. I lived and died in L.A. as a kid. I'm going big with wardrobe this year. Hashtag Super Bowl special year this year to me. Hashtag rage for life. Scroll down on the date that that was sent, please. Just so we can get it completely. September 13th. Yeah, February 12th, 2027 is when this happens. I appreciate him preparing like this. Legend. And that's why he makes it 25 years. Exactly. That's the difference. Can't wait to see what he fucking pulls out. Oh, yeah. 200 days in advance, he's laying out his clothes? Yeah. Don't overthink it.

2:03:55He would never. Ever. And he's a trustless instinct. He always buys great jackets from the local store next door. It costs like$4 ,000 for some sweet Super Bowl jacket.

2:04:04Pat McAfee:I'll be part of it. He wins it back. He may or may not try to take it back a couple times. Him coming out. Yeah. He's a showman. He has the best stage presence. I mean, that's literally our last moment of the season. Yeah. Is Gabe Morenci coming out from SportsRage, telling us all his favorite bets. And at that point, what, I'm like a, I'm a dead man walking at that point, right, after the season. Most of us are. I'll be 30 to 40. Actually, not this year. I'm not going to be 30 to 40 pounds heavier. Exactly. I've decided that that's not going to happen. But nonetheless, we are very lucky, thankful.

2:04:39Pat McAfee:But that's a long football season. And then he pops out and it's like, We made it. I mean, that's what we're all just trying to get to. It's Marenzi coming out on stage. This is what we're trying to get to right here. This was the same set that, yeah. Yeah, bingo. Goat. Yeah, this is the same set that AJ refused to put his hands up with Wiz Khalifa, I do believe. No, this was the Louisiana. Look at that juice. Look at that juice. So much love. Oh, that was San Francisco. Okay, so San Fran was obviously great. This was last year. I assume he gave us a winner. Kenyon Barner. Touchdown, AJ. Yeah.

2:05:13Pat McAfee:Whoever it was. AJ Barner. Yeah, Kenyon Barner too. He's a great player. Great player, right? Yeah. Let's get to a break on the other – hey, we'll see you there, Gabe. What will happen from now until then? A lot. Football. Anything. Anything could happen. That shite division group? Paul. Out of change. Maybe. Thank you, AJ. Didn't want to be too negative, but as somebody who's got season tickets to one of the teams on there, we would like that to change.

2:05:42AQ Shipley:Mm-hmm.

2:05:42Pat McAfee:But there's a chance it doesn't. What if the Kansas City Chiefs just run wild on, just like the Baltimore Ravens just did, and the Indianapolis Colts got to live in the shite division for two weeks at least, and then that potentially steamrolls into week three? And all of a sudden, last year, we're the best team in football. This year, shite division. Yeah. Citizens. 17.

2:06:06Pat McAfee:Arizona Cardinals are supposed to be in the shite division. Nope. They're unbelievable. Not this year, boys. Oh, we'll see. Yeah. Remember, that is a relegation promotion. We're going to find out real quick. You know who they play this week, right? Oh, yeah. My team. Seahawks. My NFC team. Yeah. At home, though. At home. Home owner. Sam Darnold. Red Sea is going to be freaking nuts. No, Sam Darnold, right? Drew Locke, he said at least one more week. And that was a glute, not the maximus. Do you know the ass muscles better than me and rap? Because we couldn't figure out what the other. I think it's the gluteus Odysseus, maybe, or.

2:06:39Pat McAfee:Glute mead. How many glute muscles do we have?

2:06:42AQ Shipley:You wouldn't know, AQ.

2:06:43Pat McAfee:Well, the gluteus maximus. I mean, we don't even have to dive into why AQ definitely knows what the answer is. But the gluteus maximus is the big one. Yeah. And there's the gluteus medius. Which is what? Where's that? Do the math. And the medius in the middle. Where my tailbone is? Your butt crack? Right next to your butt crack. Right in the middle. Yes. So he got a butt crack? All right. No, no. Pour his butt crack open. Okay, so we're kind of right. It's a nice butt. The gluteus minimus, gluteus medius. Easy, D-butt. Gluteus maximus. It could have been any of those three. It's not the maximus, though, is what he said.

2:07:18Pat McAfee:So it's got to be the minimus or the medius. And I do think – It's got to be the minimus. I bet the minimus. Yeah, because that feels like hip. That's where he's rocking, too. And it was his right leg. Yeah. And you said what? Minius? Medius. I said medius. So you said left side. Yeah. Strong side. Yeah. Got his butt banged. It's going to happen. So he's got a bruised gluteus minimus. Yeah. Thank God that's all it was. I know. And I think for this graph, they needed a big butt to showcase where everything was. So I appreciate the graph makers, or the, what is this called? Not a graph. Chart. Diagram?

2:07:59Yeah, chart, diagram, you name it.

2:08:01Pat McAfee:I appreciate the diagram's attention to detail here because we can see every single centimeter of all those muscles. And congrats to them, by the way, whoever that was. Yeah, nice ass. Looks like Mrs. Incredible. It's a display ass. Yeah, it is. That's not real, by the way. That was AI.

2:08:21Which is going to kill us all. Oh, yeah. Okay. Some quarterbacks for sure.

2:08:30it's kind of they would encapsulate it all just shouldn't have said it

2:08:34Pat McAfee:I mean just shouldn't have said it just shouldn't have said it as it was coming out I assume oh no way too transparent right now should not have said that because there's going to be huge ramifications from this and there was and obviously we had apology moving forward but let's remember that everybody's working with each other to try to make the absolute greatest thing we possibly can this football season. That's right. Sarkeesian with two interview situations in one game, potentially because the amount of time he was being asked to not coach his team or not celebrate with his team, which I think was potentially a little bit abnormal than what it normally would have been.

2:09:17So I think there might be some other sides to it all. Sure.

2:09:21Pat McAfee:But I think all parties are like, hey, we would just like to move on. Let's move forward with football. And I'm happy that happened. But there was a lot of situations that we should have been avoiding, certainly, and have to going forward. But nobody's perfect. And I appreciate that we all put our swords aside. Where'd D-Buck go? Piping hot Pice, I assume. Oh, no. What happened? Well, he was looking at that diagram of that person. And AQ mentioned lotion. Jesus. You think that's going on right now? I don't know. That would be crazy. That would be a crazy move to do. Don't admit to go check. Why admit?

2:09:58Pat McAfee:It's just so I know what. I can knock on the door and make sure everything's all right. Let's get to a break. Hey, you jerking it in there? I'm never out of left field. Be a friend. Tell a friend something nice. It might change your life. We will get to the headlines on the other side. And I would like to let everybody know, do whatever you need to do to get to the game. Sure. Sure. Whatever you guys need to do to get back to the other side of this break and have a good third hour, you do it. We don't need to be sending Mitt in there like a splunker into the caves to kind of find out what the fuck's going on.

2:10:32Pat McAfee:Okay? Everybody respect everybody's privacy. Whatever you need to do to be the best version of you, let's do that. Now, that is the expectation. The next hour of this show is going to be the best we've ever had. Deal? Yeah, deal. Deal. Deal. No chance that happened. Be your friend. Tell him something. Oh, he's back. Hey, they said you were in there doing an AQ Shipley yourself. What would that be? You know what it is. Great to see you back. We're going on a break now. Be a friend. Tell a friend something nice. It might change your life. Take five. Five.

2:12:09Pat McAfee:Football! He's the greatest A.J. Hawk there. Incredible timing by you, especially as an addict in Ohio. man that just are you always early felt early for me it was but i appreciated that you went for it you know i i think so i motivated you to do that because i like that you took a shot going early you know so i motivating you tell you to do it again then you self-scouted it said felt like i was that is the accurate read on that okay but i like that i'm trying to get i'm trying to be right on with the boys but it's got it it's very you know it's tough yeah but i feel like you you know yeah we're working at it yeah still practicing i like that you did that the mindset is really 80 of the battle i think because you do get in your big ass head a little bit every once in a while you're like you know and you kind of you kind of pull back and then you're late and it's very obvious that time you just started the slow clap and i i think that's a good thing not a bad thing we need to keep that attitude and mindset as we go through college football and nfl season the toxic table is here looking normal again at bossy connor and at ty schmidt There's a nine-year NFL vet, Darius J.

2:13:14Pat McAfee:Butler, down there. Yes, sir. Marlins hat. Are they good at baseball?

2:13:17AQ Shipley:You know what? I think we're about eight back from the last five-card. Yeah, they're done. They're done. It's tough. It's been tough for us. We had a good stretch before the all-star game. Then it kind of stunk at the end. But, you know, it's football season.

2:13:29Pat McAfee:Yeah, it certainly is football season, especially if you live in a city where your baseball team sucks. That would be a majority of us out here. Talk about worst team of all time. The Athletic had an article that projected what potential rosters could be for college football. Okay. So there was all these college football brands, and they're like, hey, here's how your team stacks up and scale for everybody else. I don't think any of these deals are public, so I think this is a prognostication, if you will. But from our source, this should be about right, but do those people know what it is? because who's paying what.

2:14:07Pat McAfee:And you look at the top there, it's like, Oregon at the top of the food chain money-wise, which we all expect and understand, not a great start. No. Not a great start, obviously. So I think that's something you're going to be judged upon. Ohio State Buckeyes, obviously full investment out of the state of Ohio. We know that. They lose in Austin. So you've got two of the teams at the very top who obviously have L's already on the board two weeks into this, and you start to wonder, what does the future roster look like? What does the future cap look like? And what does the future of these coaches look like?

2:14:38Pat McAfee:Not saying landing or anybody's in trouble, but this is what you're going to be judged off of, especially when it's the boosters who are making a lot of the decisions and it's the boosters who are giving a lot of the money that they're seeing. One's going to keep saying Oregon, lose to Oklahoma State. And it's like that. This brings a whole new element to pressure and how hot seats can get and everything like that. And if your team's down there at the bottom, I think you're thinking to yourself, okay, I'm looking for another sport to follow. Okay, I think that's potentially, What do you mean? Not everybody.

2:15:08Pat McAfee:What do you mean? Who's down there at the bottom? I didn't even see. You know, Hawks roster is, you know, right around$18 million to$21 million a year. So they're kind of wading in those very, very shallow waters. But they make it work. I mean, West Virginia is down there. Same deal. No, no. 18 to 22, I believe. But, you know, BC right now. I mean, they said anywhere from$8 million to$13 million a year. And Bill O 'Brien's making it work, but how do you make that work? Well, and then also there is a team in there that's kind of near the top that hasn't had a lot of success yet that you seemingly pointed out immediately upon looking at this graph.

2:15:45I can't remember who I said.

2:15:47Pat McAfee:Okay, well then good. You didn't really mean it. We don't have to bring it up. No, who was it? Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Yeah, yeah, I definitely meant that. Yeah, Nebraska, it's criminal that they're spending that much money and, you know, Matt Rule still has a job. I love the guy. He's great on the show. We don't call for jobs around here, but these are the types of things that are going to be taken into consideration for the jobs. And that takes me to baseball. The Mets, last year, second highest payroll, I believe, behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. Dodgers obviously win the World Series. Mets don't even make the playoffs.

2:16:18Pat McAfee:This year, they're even worse. I thought in baseball, if you spend the most amount of money, you win. That's kind of what the entire thing is about. No, not typically. If you're a loser franchise like the Mets are, for whatever reason, it just doesn't work. And they play in a very tough division. That's part of it. But, yes, the idea is that if you spend more money than everybody else and get kind of the best players, that you will win. But that's also a big part is you need to spend the most money while getting the right players, not just spending a bunch of money on players who aren't really going to help you.

2:16:47Pat McAfee:AJ, you and I come from cities in which in baseball franchises, not that I was a fan, but you were, that are down there near BC and Duke, you know, whenever you talk about the athletic scale of what these rosters are. This is seemingly pointing out, like, hey, who's probably going to be and who's probably not, which I think is the whole conversation about, like, hey, we've got to put some sort of something on what the future is because the top end here, they're going to be able to go whatever. The top end is going to be able to be bottomless pit, bottomless bowl of soup and breadsticks, okay? This is Olive Garden.

2:17:21Pat McAfee:They're able to go whatever it is. Whatever the playing field is, they'll be able to get to. Everybody down here, are they going to move? Are they going to stay here? And then do we fall into the MLB situation, which is why trying to get floor cap on this entire conference? Look how much it's jumped. When Ohio State won the national championship, people were going crazy because they had, what, like a$30 million roster that year? That was, what, two years ago, three years ago? And it's almost doubled already. So, like, yeah, the line between the have and the have-nots has been emboldened like crazy.

2:17:53And until we get some sort, like, who's to say that, you know, let's say Oregon doesn't win or whatever this year and they don't have the best year. Like, who's to say they're not going to have an$80 million roster next year to make sure, like, hey, we can't have what happened last year happen this year.

2:18:08Pat McAfee:Which any team could have if they have a booster who has billions of dollars and would like your team to have success, which is what a lot of people are saying, like, hey, don't we need some sort of something here? because some of these schools, you know, they don't have a billionaire or maybe a trillionaire looking to have their team win. So shouldn't we put some sort of protection on it? Then you hear the agents come out in the NAACP and they're like, seems like everything's hunky-dory right now. It's just like the MLBPA, just like what the baseball players are saying. Ratings are bigger than they've ever been.

2:18:41Pat McAfee:We're saying this is a problem. This is how this is. Why would we change it? It's like, well, I think everybody that's actually around the sport in college sports as a whole was like, is this sustainable? A professional operation certainly is. But this is money coming from people that are getting no money in return. This is just like, hey, I don't want to say goodwill. Pretty much. But kind of like a goodwill. And some schools at the top are going to be able to be there forever and some aren't. Is that what we want? That's for other people to figure out. That is for other people to figure out.

2:19:08Pat McAfee:But it does seem like a lot of people say, hey, this divide is going to get pretty big whenever if it continues to grow the way it is and that's just college football a lot

2:19:18AQ Shipley:of teams from the south spinning some money up there see yeah i like that they're getting into

2:19:23Pat McAfee:the game you know old miss obviously from watching blindside we know they have a lot of money yep right we know that that is uh certainly a team that is able to get up in there uh texas a &m we know that they got a lot of cash out there but if you have success that money continues that's just like university of houston i think they got a lot of money down there if they were to hit on a couple things, not saying they didn't hit with the swang is coming out, you know what I'm saying, with the fucking thingies on the wheels, which is sweet. Allegedly, that was a last-minute audible because something else was supposed to happen.

2:19:53Pat McAfee:And then that fell through, and they're like, fucking call, trill, whatever. Get the swangers out here. Get the swangers out here. Roll that thing out there. Allegedly, from one particular source after we talked about it before, but if you're one of these schools down the bottom and you get a booster or a couple boosters that give you some money and you hit on it, then there's a chance to go but if you get money and you waste it it's probably going the other way and there's going to be a lot more of those stories than there are the indiana stories you know because indiana what they were talking about well they got all this money from mark cuban's like no mark cuban's not the main driver in that but mark cuban we've all seen smart investor do you think he's still going to fork over whatever dollar it is if the team's losing and he's getting nothing in return other than his school uh potentially having a chance at football it's like yeah right you give that money you have success all of a sudden the boosters are like yes, we would like to continue to do this.

2:20:40Pat McAfee:And you can kind of go from the bottom ladder, bottom tier, up to the top. But once again, there's going to be a lot more people that miss with money than hit with money. So how long does this last? That is the question, I guess, that is being discussed everywhere these days. I mean, look at Penn State. Penn State was at the top of the ladder last year. Now they're just middle of the table. They're right next to Wisconsin. You wonder, that's probably one of those schools where if Matt Campbell proves it, you're going to see them in the upper echelon, the upper tier. But right now, because of the Franklin debacle, because all the money they spent that panned out for nothing, they kind of have to drop down a little bit and figure it out before going all the way back in on football.

2:21:16Pat McAfee:And this isn't even talking about the other sports that are happening. You're talking about Penn State. They invest in their hockey team. Obviously, the Pagoula family invests big time in the hockey team. Basketball, there are some rosters that are gigantic. Baseball, softball. And I think the future of college sports could be better than ever, especially if they're able to figure this all out. but it also could get pretty crazy in the difference between who's where. This is a good article from The Athletic. Hey, that's good for ball. Thank you, Athletic. We don't know if it's real, though. Obviously, none of these contracts are public.

2:21:47AQ Shipley:Something that is real in public up there on that list, top of that list, University of Miami. Oh, yeah. Going back to Nike. Thank God. I think that's the last thing that's going to get him back over the hump.

2:21:58Pat McAfee:That's next year. So you're saying this year no good, even though Mets is currently on pace.

2:22:01AQ Shipley:Or maybe that's how you bring it in, just like Blue. Oh, he came and, hey, won the Super Bowl. Maybe you win a national championship, and then you, boom, back to Nike.

2:22:07Pat McAfee:Barry Jackson at Florida Sports Buzz on top of it. Scoop per sources. University of Miami's going back to Nike. And the most – one of the most lucrative deals in college sports history. So it can't be more than Oregon's deal because that's where Nike, like, started. So I assume they will always have the biggest Nike deal out of every team in the country. I think there's some other tiered Nike deals. I think if I know the business and what it was for a while. So they're saying they're getting one of the top ones. That's great. Kirk Herbstreet. Yeah, he's jacked up. This guy. Obviously, all Adidas National Championship last year, Indiana, Miami.

2:22:45Pat McAfee:Adidas investing massively in American football. First time, long time. They've been super international. We will dabble with American football, but not really their thing. And all Kirk could say the entire time is, I fucking hate it. I'm like, well, don't we like that they're bringing their money into, you know, like football? This is a good thing, not a bad thing. Well, they need to figure out how to fucking do it then because his pants are ass. I don't like seeing his pants. They're baggy. That's what he said. Thank goodness Miami players are too good to be wearing his baggy-ass pants. Great.

2:23:13Pat McAfee:Now, he was so mad. He saw him jog on the field. What is this? This is peewee football? What do we got going on? Why don't the pants fit? That was the first thing he said. And there's a lot of old-school Miami people that are like, The U and the swoosh just seem like they are synonymous with each other. Adidas, though, is taking them to a national championship. First time, long time. Them going back to Nike, obviously a big deal. Nike was kind of relinquishing a lot of college ball. Adidas was coming in in a big way. Under Armour was coming in a big way. I do believe Nike potential. They lost a lot of money over the last year.

2:23:47Pat McAfee:Yeah, I think Nike won the last year. So they had to probably do a realignment, readjustment on who we need to focus on, what we need to get back into. it did feel like they were losing college football a little bit. Now, obviously, clearly jumping right back in.

2:23:58AQ Shipley:Yeah, that is sweet because growing up, Nike dominated college football. We all remember the all-gray gloves that everybody wore. Miami back in the days, the black socks, and that was a big thing at least down in South Florida. So, yeah, it is good to see them coming back, especially when you see kind of what's happening to them on the business side. There's a lot of reports on, like, 52-week lows or the stock price just got taken out of the S &P 500, I think, last month. So, yeah, it's getting stinky over there business-wise. So I'd like to see them getting back into college ball.

2:24:27Pat McAfee:You know, whenever, for me, kicker, punter, there's a lot of thought as a soccer player, free kick taker. It's like, I'll be able to do this. I'll be able to do this. I don't have to worry about the fundamentals that much. It's like, hey, put the ball down. I'll fucking put it through the thing. Then you realize in these massive moments, like you need some fundamentals. You know, you can't just be freestyling it in a lot of big type of moments. It's like, I guess we should have some sort of system or technique here that we can fall back upon. So then obviously the practice reps pick up for me.

2:24:59Pat McAfee:And I feel like what happens to all people, whenever it's a high-pressure situation, you fall back on your fundamentals. Especially if you're going to be, let's say, a pitcher or a hitter or a golfer or a kicker or a punter or any of these positions that are pretty isolated, but you need to do a craft at a very high level. I think it comes to a point sometime in your career where you're going to have to rely on your fundamentals. You're going to have to fall back on them. That's what Nike's doing right now. Falling back on the fundamentals. People love fucking football, right? Let's bring back our TD speeds, too.

2:25:28Pat McAfee:The speeds from 2004. We need the 2004-2005 speeds back if you want to do that. The loop of paint around the front. Do you remember with the white? Oh, yeah. The vapors. I wore vapors in college. They were the lowest low tops, and they were super flimsy. They were awesome. They were like soccer cleats, weren't they? Yeah, pretty much. They would never let you wear them now. They claim you'll break your foot. Liz Frank, all that situation. Yeah, I bought like four pairs of those speeds whenever they were about to end them. I was grabbing pairs out of there to hold on to them. I wore those as kicker punter at West Virginia, and then they just stopped creating them.

2:26:04Pat McAfee:I was trying to get them into the NFL, and they fell apart because I only had like three pairs to use for the last year. J.J. Watt told a story about trying to dumpster dive into something to find some cleats. Yes, I believe it was the Vapors, the one with Luke Keekly. Is that what you're talking about? Yeah, that was the vapors AJ was talking about. And then the bottoms of the shoes, I guess, or the cleats, rather, just basically melted off at a certain point. Yeah, they did fall apart. The old school technology on shoes were not the best. Yeah. You know, they did kind of fall apart. I would like them to do some throwback styles.

2:26:35They need to make the lineman cleats wider because their lineman cleats have gone to shit. Like, they are super narrow. The linemen absolutely hate wearing them. They need to fix them. Okay. I'm telling you, do you remember when we played? Yeah, you guys had those big boots. Big boots. But that's what we want. You want the boots, man?

2:26:53Pat McAfee:You want the boots, man? I thought we were supposed to pull. RPL, we were just talking about the hybrid offensive linemen. No, they hate them, man. They're all cutting the toes out so that their feet have room to breathe. Oh, yeah, my pinky toe hated those. I think that's why I like the speeds, because they had a little fat front end. You know what I mean? Had a big cockpit up there for my toes. You need the wide toe box. Yeah, I like the wide toe box. Yeah, they need to get back to that. Right now, all these things are narrow, and linemen hate them. There you go. They're saying too much pizzazz on these cleats.

2:27:19Yeah, they're trying to make them look too cool, trying to make them look like linebacker cleats, and they're not.

2:27:23Pat McAfee:Athletes. I like that. Disgusting. Just saying. There's my piece. Let's talk about athletes. Let's not talk about offensive lines toes. Been there. Even though I feel the same exact way. You're built like a lineman. Thank you. Kinda. And I got a great we know. I mean, Jason Kelsey didn't get a chance to see it on Monday, but we know that my fucking he. Hi. Hey, Nat. Yeah. It's on the game day.

2:27:48AQ Shipley:Oh, yeah. This week? No, first week.

2:27:51Pat McAfee:Did I give one?

2:27:52AQ Shipley:Yeah, you did. Oh, yeah.

2:27:53Pat McAfee:See, I blacked out in there. I don't even remember doing it. As soon as it's time to go, I'm just listening for the fucking cadence. Yep. You know what I mean? I don't even, I don't need to be thinking. I don't need to be thinking out there at all. AJ, you got it one time, I think, haven't you? Just out there. Oh, yeah. Yeah, he kicked flat on me. I wouldn't, I wouldn't, I wouldn't want to take a pass rush against you. Only two people would beat me. Cam Hayward. Who? Aiden Hutchison. Well, Hutch was a screen. Yeah, you kind of washed Hutch down. Yeah, you did. It was a screen. You're right. I kind of let him by.

2:28:20Jay Glazer kind of got you that one time.

2:28:23Pat McAfee:Jay. Yeah, that was the one. I can't co-sign on that. I don't think Jay got you. Thank you, because we all know how that could have ended, and it didn't. So, I think I was being very hospitable. That would have been awesome. Awesome. You would have done awesome. So, I know he knows rolling very well. Yeah. And we did start doing the shoulders thing. This guy? Yeah, but he started really moving. And I'm in cowboy boots, and I didn't know we were doing this. So I'm sliding backwards, but just natural. And Jay Glazer probably felt this because he is Jay Glazer. But there was like, let me see, if I was to get here, how does it feel?

2:28:59Pat McAfee:And if he keeps going, we're going to see. So then we go to this side, he keeps pushing. I'm like, all right, we're fucking going for a hip tosser. As soon as we get to this other side. And we hugged each other. This little judo throw. And we hugged each other. but we were about a half a second away from me trying to fucking fool on, you know, trying to get him. I love Jake Leger. If I didn't like him, I wouldn't be trying to do that. But he was fucking moving me pretty good. Not as much as Cam Hayward. Cam Hayward put his left hand into my chest, pushed me into a brick wall. You remember that?

2:29:23Pat McAfee:Yep. Old office. He was like, this is really fun. I was like, Cam, what would you fucking do right here? And he, like, actually got down into the stance. I'm like, oh, this is sweet. Dude, I don't think anybody's ever really gone into a stance against me. This is going to be fun. and then obviously, who's it on? He said, doesn't matter. I said, all right, it'll be on me. I'll do it. I fucking one step. He fucking gets up for real. Oh, my God. So then I go another one. I got to put my hands on him. His fucking mitt right to my chest. Okay? We're not playing any fucking. Long arm, yeah. Long arm, yeah.

2:29:53Pat McAfee:Right to my chest and pushed me into a brick wall as if I was a fucking eighth grader. Do you remember when he did that? Yeah. That was a shame. Vividly. I almost retired. He's pretty strong. Guy's a first bout hall favor. Yeah. All pro. He lifted me up off the ground, I think, if I do recall, like it was a movie. Like, hey, fucking fun? Is this one? Is this fun? Is this what you wanted to do? Is this what we were looking to accomplish? Then he put me back down, pat me on the head. Then he kind of walked out. See you guys later. I'm going to stop doing this shit, but then I went right back to it in public.

2:30:23Pat McAfee:You don't look like Cam Hayward. Fucking give me that. That's what I thought. I like it. It's a good thing, not a bad thing. Offensive line is going to be a big part of the story this year. AQ, we're thankful that you're here. Also, we're thankful that we get a chance to dive into something that maybe doesn't get talked about enough. We need some good D to be discussed by D-Butt. Everything D-B, good D coming right down the pipe. Happy Wednesday to you, D-Butt. Who needs to be chatting about or celebrating a little bit?

2:30:46AQ Shipley:Obviously, it starts with the Niners down under. They had a great outing on offense and on defense. Big-time pick right here from the reigning MVP. We always talk about from zone coverages. We saw it always throughout the week, especially in that Dallas Giants game on Sunday night football, playing high to low, being a flat defender, They're playing a high to low. You take away the high route, you react to the low route. We have a no-cover zone. I don't know if you guys used to call it the same thing, A.J., in zone coverage. So right here, great job. Knowing also green the corner, knowing Puka Niku is probably going to get targeted on this third and 10.

2:31:20AQ Shipley:So many times throughout the league, down the distance, guys aren't aware of him, so they stay kind of around the sticks. He'll maybe be hugged up on 18, you know, five yards away from the line of scrimmage and give up that corner route. So great job by him. I wouldn't even say baiting Matt Stafford into this because he got depth, he got width, he kept leverage on it, and then great job going up and finishing this play for a big-time interception.

2:31:41Pat McAfee:So this was not a bait. This was just standard bait?

2:31:43AQ Shipley:No, it wasn't a bait. It's just him doing his job. He gets a reroute. If you run it back to the beginning, if you're a deep half safety, this is kind of like a quarter, quarter half. If you go back to the very beginning, Foxy, it starts off showing like a single high, so you're thinking cover three or man if you're the quarterback. and then as the routes progress down the field, they go to more of a split safety look. And any time that corner is rolled up like that, you're going to have a safety over the top. So you see 36 just being in that deep half. And as that underneath defender, you just want to keep getting depth, right?

2:32:12AQ Shipley:Because Puka, if he stays shallow, he hits Puka right around the 20-yard line, a little bit in front of that 20-yard line. And he probably goes in and at least threatens to score right here. It's a one-on-one tackle with that safety. But instead, he continues getting depth, continues sinking, and then climbing up and making the interception.

2:32:27Pat McAfee:Wow, good for him. We didn't have any of that this weekend. We didn't have any of that. No. That was unbelievable. They're doing this down under. How do you think the Australians felt about with the game that they watched?

2:32:36AQ Shipley:I think it was a pretty good game. It was pretty dominant. You know, you got the answers. Like I said, the Rams, I think they took the travel wrong, or maybe just the Niners were that damn good. And Kyle Shanahan, he's going to be prepared, you know, week in and week out. He's going to have the protection set. He's going to have movement. He's going to have a good run game. He's going to have a good plan. And they went out and executed. And then Raheem Morris had his defense ready to roll as well.

2:32:57Pat McAfee:Niners also won over Australia because they were there for a week ahead of time. Pro Niners crowd big time. Happy about that. So I think Australia seeing the team that chose to go down there for a week actually kick ass to the Super Bowl favorites was good for sport in Australia. Now Niners' use check was on big day with big strikes. Breaking down all of the big plays. And he was saying that he actually feels much better than he thought he was coming back. So maybe they were able to fix their sleep as well as they got acclimated to the Australia lifestyle for a week. Yeah, I assume the Aussies weren't too, too happy about Matt Stafford, the MVP of the entire league, going down there and just throwing meatball subs like Deebo just showed around the yard, especially when Miles Garrett being another one of the biggest storylines is basically out there running around.

2:33:42But I do think that overall the Aussies were definitely jacked up because it feels like they are now completely a part of the 49ers nation.

2:33:50Pat McAfee:A Niners are a good team for the Aussies to like, too. Very physical, fly around, going to be good. I think that's a good thing. Shoes. Yeah, a lot of shoes. They'll do it over there. Kittle is perfect for the Aussies to fall in love with, not only him but everybody else. Christian McCaffrey had a hilarious line about what he said to him over there. It feels like maybe the Niners are Australia's team. So maybe long-term, Sean McVay knew that. Sean McVay said, we'll be the bad guys. We'll come in there. We'll stink the joint up. We'll put you over. Okay, we'll fucking get back. We're LA's team.

2:34:19Pat McAfee:Right in the shite division. Yeah, then we'll end up in a shite division as Super Bowl odds-on favorites. We would like to say that anybody could get it. Rams odds-on favorite in the shite division. That should be talked about, AJ. Nobody ever really chats about us being stern but fair. Always. We've always been stern but fair. But could this be like the long game Sean McVay is playing saying, hey, if we go out there and we get rocked, they won't put us up for international games anymore. Hopefully we don't play many of these in the future. Oh, this is like D-Butt doing special teams reps. Yep.

2:34:49Pat McAfee:he's sabotaging. I've heard of people say like, oh yeah, when I was changing my kid's diaper at a young age, my kid rolled and fell off the table while I was changing the diaper. My wife doesn't let me change diapers anymore. And I'm like, alright buddy, you probably shouldn't be the father of that child. But yeah, I've heard people say that. Yeah, it sounds like you were trying to not do it anymore but let's not put the kid at risk to showcase that. Sounds like a Herb Street move. What's a dad doing the first six, seven months anyways? What are we doing? That was one of the most hilarious things I've ever heard him say.

2:35:22And then he just, really?

2:35:25Pat McAfee:Yeah. I'm multiple kids. I'm still wondering. Upside down. I still don't know what's going on. Okay, so the Rams, maybe not dead. Niners certainly ball out. That's some good D with D. Butch, is there any other good D that we need to talk about?

2:35:38AQ Shipley:Before we move on, 49ers, it's always about health. If they can stay healthy, you keep Bosa, Fred Warner, and those guys on the field, Kittle, obviously Purdy, like McCaffrey, they have the roster top to bottom to go out and compete. And obviously the coaching staff as well with that addition, Raheem Morris on the defensive side. Let's stay on the NFC West, though. Big-time win. What was the stat yesterday? Biggest underdog upset since 92 or something like that. Which is absolutely crazy. Defense much improved. Offense much improved. It's a big-time pick. What's his nickname? What do they call him out there?

2:36:07AQ Shipley:Dewey. Okay, this is Dewey Winger. Last I remember him was Jaguars defender now coming over here making a big-time play. So you'll see it once again, a split safety coverage. Buda Baker at the bottom of the screen, he's a safety down here. And as Herbert kind of rolls out, I don't know if this was the pressure or if this was the design, but he rolls out and run it back real quick. Just watch Buda Baker first. So watch this safety that's circled at the bottom near the hash. He's going to take away this seven route, this outbreaking route. And once Justin Herbert sees that, that lets him know, okay, I'm going to go deep to my outside receiver.

2:36:41AQ Shipley:He has leverage on the corner. He doesn't account for that overlapping safety, finding work, as we called it, as the other deep safety on the opposite side of the field. Rarely does that quarterback account for him. He puts too much air on the ball, and O'Duey goes up and gets it. Big time play, high pointing and making the play.

2:36:56Pat McAfee:So he was not supposed to be there. He was supposed to be taken up by Q. Quentin Johnson on the left side runs like a deep in, it seems like. He's not supposed to be over there in Justin Herbert's mind. He is completely free, one-on-one out there. If I can hit him deep, this is a touchdown.

2:37:09AQ Shipley:Yeah, so when you're that deep safety, you know, you've got to have a feel for the routes. And I don't know what adjustments were made. Maybe pre-snap he just told that backside corner, hey, lock it. That's yours with that cut split. But having that vision as a deep safety, your indicator comes from the quarterback. Like, that's what you're reading. You're not looking at a man per se. It's a big protection. So it's not that many routes down the field. You only have one deep threat to your side, to that front side. So you're reading the quarterback. So once you see Herbert set up, you know exactly where he's going with this ball.

2:37:38AQ Shipley:We used to call it breaking the egg, pulling that front hand off the ball, and you just react. These are drills you'll see at the combine for deep safeties. Hey, open your hips this way, open your hips that way, get to the ball and make a play. So this is like a practice individual rep almost, but he stayed, never broke stride, and went up there and made a big-time play. So the Cardinals aren't ass. Playing good football. Playing good football. Obviously, it's only week one, but AQ, one of his big takeaways was defensively, he felt like they played much better than most people expected.

2:38:07Pat McAfee:You like this team, huh? You didn't really love them last year. No, no, no. I'd say. It was hard for you to have to go out and say, maybe they – but it was off air. You were very much like, this team, this team not good. This is a tough team to be a fan of because you are a fan of team. I believe you live there. You obviously call their games. You think, from my understanding, you're a huge fan of the way this team is operating right now? Offensively, the way they're built on paper, roster-wise, very, very good. They're going to put up points. The question comes down to the defense. Can Josh Sweat have another double-digit year in sacks?

2:38:42Can Mack Wilson continue to play like he did in week one? And Buda Baker, obviously, with him and Dewey Winger. Can Will Johnson? Can Denzel Burke and these guys at the cornerback position live up? If the defense does their job, the Arizona Cardinals will be in it.

2:38:55Pat McAfee:So we had Michael Flora on the other day. We're very thankful for that. Thank you. I believe you helped us out in that entirety as well. It was pretty apparent, like, he didn't love that he was doing an interview. Sure. And they're trying to build something new. but he does watch program from my understanding, so we are very grateful he came on. But as we were talking to him, I'm like, oh, no, is this the only time this year we're going to be able to talk to this guy? There's a chance. Is this going to – you know what I mean? Is our week one overreaction how much we've loved the Arizona Cardinals, or are they this year going to actually continue to be a good football team?

2:39:26Pat McAfee:It sounds like from what AQ's saying and what D-Bot's saying here, sound football, not just like kind of a lucky win, AJ. Yeah, I think so. They could be. I mean, we will see a lot this week, I think, from them to see if they can rebound or continue their success. But I thought you meant that's the last time we're going to talk to LeFour because he's such a football guy. He's grinding all the time. There's no way he's going to agree to another interview. Yeah, definitely never going to talk to him again. But I just thought to myself while we were talking to him, like, man, undefeated coach right now.

2:39:50Pat McAfee:They're still in the NFC West. Their schedule is brutal. Yeah. Their next, like, eight weeks are brutal. Which their beat reporters say, if they can steal two in the first 11 weeks, maybe he's still like, yeah, all right, they still won. Let's see. Maybe that's how he feels. Probably. But from my perspective, from what you guys are saying, that have watched every single rep, sound football happening. I think you win games whenever you play sound football as opposed to just gimmick football. Happy for the Cardinals. Also, happy for that team over there in the shadows of New York City. Oh, wow.

2:40:20AQ Shipley:Yeah, talking about sound football. They play sound football on both sides of the ball as well. New defensive coordinator, Denari Wilson, coming over here. So this kind of starts with pressure up front. We always talk about marrying the pressure up front with the coverage on the back end. And Abdul Carter lined up as a tackle pass rusher. Look at the situation down here. We were talking about it earlier with the sit rep from the Bears. This is 58 seconds left in the first half. So a two-minute situation. Offense is on their side of the field. Third and five, money down. So this is a critical down.

2:40:49AQ Shipley:Now you got your pass. You just call this NASCAR. So you got your pass rushers on the field. Watch the immediate pressure that Carter puts on the field. And then the job that Kayvon Thibodeau does on the outside to keep the edge on Dak Prescott and not let him break the pocket. And then on the back end, it kind of becomes a scramble plaster drill with Javon Holland. The safety they signed over for Miami a couple years ago. Didn't have a great year last year, but started off his season with a big-time pick. I think he's a$20 million a year safety. So high draft pick, highly paid players showing up early and making a big-time play.

2:41:20AQ Shipley:Now, like I said, 7-7 ball game right now. You go up, you pressure him out of the pocket. He's trying to throw this ball away. He just makes it up. Like, if you see this from the TV copy, yeah, this catch to get his knee down to focus, get this catch. Now you give the ball to your quarterback and your offense right there, and they go down to score. This is right before that Isaiah Likely touchdown where he was wide open in the back of the end zone. This is how quickly, we always talk about the middle eight when you're talking college ball. This is how quickly and critical the game can change. This is complimentary football.

2:41:49AQ Shipley:Defense making a big time stop on the money down and then the offense taking advantage and driving down and taking a seven point lead going into the half.

2:41:56Pat McAfee:Shottie sitting right next to this guy as we get the shot down the line or the sideline is hilarious. Him not believing it's a catch, nah. No way. Nah. Nope. No, no way. No way is that a catch. And I think we all thought that because we assume Dak Prescott going to throw that away. Yep. Okay, we assume he's not going to let it be intercepted. And then whenever we see it, there's no way the guy got inbounds and had control of the ball. There's so many things that have to go into that great ball.

2:42:21AQ Shipley:Maybe it's the DB. Great ball skill. Yeah, I thought it was a catch immediately. Just maybe it's the DB. I mean, it's very similar to what we saw with Drake May at the end of the game when he rolled out, and you assumed he was just throwing the ball away because everybody knows if you watch football, hey, the one thing you can't do here is throw an interception, trying to throw it away. And then Job, I believe, goes up and making an unbelievable catch and getting his toes in on the sideline. So same thing here from Javon Holland. Then once again, as an offense, getting this ball less than a minute left around midfield, just driving it down, making throw after throw and getting it to the end zone.

2:42:53Pat McAfee:I'll tell you what, Bruce, you guys might not be ass this year, and you might be good for the foreseeable future, especially if Harbaugh's mental toughness and smart football and who we're paying and drafting are paying off. You guys seem like a legit program over there once again, Bruce. Yeah, it really is crazy, and I'd say that the questions were more about how Jackson Dart would evolve into the Matt Nagy-Greg Roman offense going into week one and coming out. It's how great can this defense be? Abdul was unbelievable. The fact he didn't get a sack is crazy. He was basically unblockable. Looks a lot like Michael, if you ask me.

2:43:29He looks a lot like Mike Parsons.

2:43:31Pat McAfee:Oh. Getting after it. He's spinning. He's speed rushing. He's flying around. Oh, straight, Michael. Straight. I thought he was saying straight. No, he meant Michael. No, Michael Parsons. Michael. Oh, you meant Michael. Yes, I meant Michael. Nittany line. You trade one Michael, you can get five different players. You tell me five guys, one guy, name Michael, what's better? They could have used Michael on Sunday night. Yeah, they could. I know that. They couldn't get him. Stop, good day. No, they couldn't. Hey, when's Michael playing? He's going to be back for the Bears game. Week five. Everyone's saying week six.

2:44:01Cowboys. He'll be back for the Bears game.

2:44:02Pat McAfee:What's your guys' record by then? Oh, three and two. Oh, really? I think so. Got to win the Jets game on Sunday, and then they play the Falcons after that at home. Jets, much improved. I agree. Much improved. Slow down. You got to beat the Jets. I get it. What about the Falcons? Oh, my God. Yeah, you can't lose that fucking game. That's for sure. Definitely not at home. Falcons weren't in the shite division. They could have been. Tone. Tight one. If Cooper rushes the starting quarterback, they're the worst team in the league, potentially. Okay, put Jack Strand in there, then. Yeah. I mean, why not?

2:44:40It can't get worse. Bichon's really, really good, though.

2:44:44Pat McAfee:Yeah, well, there was a time where he wasn't getting on the field for that team. I believe he – what was the stat I gave you? He had 29 touches out of his 44 snaps or something like that. I like that. Get him on the field, get him on the ball. That's what you do with your good players. Oh, yeah. And Jack Strand knows that. Michael Penix and Tua, I think they did a lot of favors just sitting on the sideline the way they looked. I saw a lot of Atlanta Falcons. They were having a good time together. That's what they were saying. Not one word of fucking motivation from either of these guys. They were just jacking around together the entire game.

2:45:12Pat McAfee:Yeah, but they weren't live streaming them. I assume there was moments that weren't caught on camera where they were saying, hey, Bijan, we're any more out of you. Or Cooper Cush, you're doing great. I assume there was a little bit of that happening. We just didn't see it. What we saw them doing was very casual, comfortable, taking the cooling bench away from whoever wasn't on the field hanging out. And I think after you lose that game and look the way you look, I think people are going to kill Tua and Penix for a while. I think they're going to have to win some games. And Cooper Cush? what tone i mean that might be the worst quarterback game i've ever seen ever neil o'donnell super bowl well he was paid to do that that's what pittsburgh say that's what people but that's not true that is a pittsburgh steelers fan thinking that neil o'donnell couldn't have played that fucking bad in the super bowl he was on the that's what everybody in pittsburgh says that's not real we're not saying that about neil once Again, Neil O'Donnell took the Steelers to the Super Bowl.

2:46:16Pat McAfee:That does not get remembered at all in the conversation, which we start – AQ, probably on your side of town, same thing. Oh, yeah, everybody. Everybody in Pittsburgh. I mean, he got the guy paid. He gave him a Super Bowl MVP, gave him everything. Two pick sixes, and they lost by 13 points. So, you told me. Yeah, it's tough outing for Neil O'Donnell, who's had a great run to get the Steelers to the Super Bowl. You're saying Cooper Cush played worse than that? Yeah, it was really bad, man. He couldn't throw anything other than, you know, a couple swings and screens to Bijan. And then, you know, you see what happens when he tried to do that too much.

2:46:49He threw another horrendous interception in the game too. It was so bad.

2:46:51Pat McAfee:Was Jack Strand suited and booted? He was suited and booted. He was number two. Did the Pittsburgh Steelers make their way on good D? Because it sounds like they could potentially have their way with that.

2:47:01AQ Shipley:No, they didn't. I thought about putting this one on the board. You know, it's not a DB. So I'm showing DB's love early.

2:47:07Pat McAfee:Okay. No Zach Vaughn for the Eagles? Nope. No TJ Watt. Right. Both defensive players of the week. Congrats to them. I think we broke this news. Oh, hell yeah. I think we did earlier today. Congrats, Borsa. I think we broke this news. Did you see that age? We came off hot with that. Didn't expect that to be the open until I read a text from a number I didn't know. Shout out to that person from NFL saying, hey, this just won out. You know, just thought you'd have eyes on it. Or this is about to go out. Thought you'd have eyes on it. Look down. You wouldn't have sent that to me unless. So we really took some liberties there and just fucking ran that thing.

2:47:44Pat McAfee:You know, they sent over exactly what they did. But if we could do that every week, we'd love to do this. Absolutely. These are huge deals, AJ. Legitimately, in locker room, in team everywhere, this is going to be celebrated mightily for these guys. And also, week one means these are pros here, right? Showing up, playing their absolute best football to start this entirety. Good for all of them and good for their teams that obviously have success, AJ. Yeah, Zach Bond, he's a guy that, I mean, he continues to play well. He's fun to watch. He really is. He seems to have settled in. He's the guy there in the middle for the Eagles.

2:48:15I don't know why. It's fun to watch him, but it's how his career has progressed and how great of a player he is now, man. He's going to be good for a long time.

2:48:23Pat McAfee:Evan McPherson for the Cincinnati Bengals. We talked about it. A lot of turnovers for that defense. They look different. Bring Sexy Dexy over there. Congrats to them getting a big win on the offensive side of the ball. We just assume it's only going to get better and better as the season goes on. Then we get some news out of Cincinnati Bengals' practice today that Joe Burrow may be a little banged up. Joe Burrow might be a little bit banged up. Yeah, the tweet basically says, hey, he didn't do this, and then he wasn't throwing any purposeful balls, and then he goes over and talks to Zach Taylor, and it looked like he was moseying a little bit.

2:48:52Pat McAfee:Obviously, this is only Wednesday, which is normally the first day of practice, first day of real work for a team. So maybe he is just taking it back or scheduled to take it down a notch or two. But reports coming out of Cincinnati are saying Joe Burrow does not look 100 % healthy here week two of the NFL season, which is obviously not great news. I texted Shefty to ask him if he's got anything on this or if he's heard anything. We're going to cold call him right now because the tweet got sent into the group within the last hour. But there might be a little something brewing with old Joey Burrow right now, A.J.

2:49:24Pat McAfee:Hawk. Yeah, I hope not. I know in the clip that they put out, I know the media is available at the first 10-15 minutes of practice. When they say no purpose for balls, that's what kind of confuses me. I guess he kind of just threw a couple little balls like a guy that was coming off some kind of arm injury, I feel like. Yeah, let's find the tweet here so we can read this accurately. Mike Petralia at Trag says, Joe Burrow didn't take part in stretch and isn't throwing with purpose and spoke with Zach Taylor. Now, does he always participate in stretch? I'm not 100 % sure. I tried to miss that as often as possible.

2:50:03You know, I didn't really – that wasn't my favorite part.

2:50:06Pat McAfee:Still don't know how to stretch. Probably going to affect me later in life. But does Joey B have his own warm-up without stretch? I guess Traggs wouldn't point that out if that wasn't a storyline. And then saying he didn't have any perp throw with any purpose and spoke with staff, what does that mean, D-Butch, to you? You think it's just maybe a G-day here?

2:50:21AQ Shipley:Nah, way too early, in my opinion, for a G-day. You're talking Wednesday. you're talking about these starting quarterbacks. They want to take every rep. Most starting quarterbacks, and AQ would be more familiar than this one. I would. They get out there early taking snaps and shit like that. I don't know if they're necessarily always in, like, the stretch lines with everyone else. But, yeah, the not throwing purposeful balls would be the most concerning thing Wednesday going into week two.

2:50:43Pat McAfee:Yeah, so we're watching the backup quarterbacks here. Is that Joey Flack? Joe Flacco taking some steps and then throwing a deep ball. Maybe this is just what Joe Flack wants to do as opposed to what Joey Burr wants to do. Could be. I think we really need to get to the bottom of this, though. We need to get Ben Baby on the horn at some point. Boom. Okay, we'll definitely reach out to Ben Baby. I believe we're reaching out to Adam Schefter right now, who we FaceTimed. It sounded like shite, so we sent him a Zoom link. Let's see if he's able to get on that. We never know what Schefter's in the middle of, legitimately.

2:51:13Pat McAfee:Yeah. Schefter could be in the middle of anything right now. He's always in the car. Every time I see him, he's always in the car. Too much. Exactly. He's in the car. He's in the middle of maybe working out. When we see him, he'll go to his own. office is he writing a journal diary entry there at the same time without a doubt because we know he does that every single night you know it's uh it's a lot hey hey bruce is he gonna join us or are we gonna um what is happening here just so i can kind of know as i'm sitting up here just talking nothing as we try to fill time here um yeah so our safari version no longer supports gmail so that that threw a bit of a wrench towards me but yes he is he is going to join Our Safari doesn't support Gmail?

2:51:52Yeah, we haven't updated our Safari on this computer in a while, and I guess it no longer supports Gmail. So I opened Gmail, and it popped up, and then I just couldn't click on any of the buttons. So the Compose button to send an email, it wasn't working.

2:52:04Pat McAfee:Okay, so you couldn't get the Zoom link too, Shefty. Okay, I appreciate you. Come on, man. Now, you know, the new iPhone's coming out because all of our iPhones aren't working anymore. Bingo. That's right. I'm getting it. Exactly. They've come out and said, that's not true. It is. Yeah, without a doubt. We fucking all live it. Every single time. We're super pumped for you. Okay? We're super pumped that you got a new one coming out. Heard it's awesome. Sucks that my phone has to suck until that happens. Did you see they're doing Apple Watch iPods? I did see that. Yes. Apple Watch. What? Instead of the watch, you know how it's a little square?

2:52:36Pat McAfee:Uh-huh. They're building a thing that is an iPod, basically. You put it on top of it, and then it can operate with a dial and a turn and a whole thing. Yeah, you can take it off. You can take it off of the watch, and then you put it into this contraption that just makes it into an iPod.

2:52:49AQ Shipley:Oh. That's stupid. You don't know. It looks cool.

2:52:54Pat McAfee:I don't need a fucking folding phone. You wear it on your wrist, too? So, I think it's fun to take a trip back in time. Remember, we all had those. I remember Steve Jobs, like it was yesterday, with his super fucking turtleneck on, saying, you know, we're going to call it the iPod. At the time, it was sweet. Yeah, we're taking a trip back in time right now. Nike's going back to Miami. Don't need to. Nike's not fucking technology. That's clothing. That's fine. We can take a trip back in time. What the hell are we doing? And how should we view this? Is this Tim's final or is this the new person's first?

2:53:29That's a great question. Got to be Tim's final.

2:53:31Pat McAfee:I'm assuming all this stuff's the final. Yeah, like even the foldable phone. Shouldn't he have stuck around at least until those things go? No, it's John's time. It's just like Tim. Like, remember for the first how many years was the stuff Tim was releasing was still Steve. Yeah. How long was Tim Donner? I know he plus 1 ,431 % or something. I forget what it was. He did pretty well. I'll tell you what. I could not have never expected what we're doing right now, trying to get a guy onto a Zoom call.

2:53:57JJ Watt:I mean, it's fucking crazy. I'm not seeing video now. That's my update here. I haven't asked Bruce what's going on yet.

2:54:02Pat McAfee:Bengals got the Texans coming up, I believe, by the way. No problem there. No problem there. Of a 36-point performance, too. Yeah, that's certainly who you'd like to see. I'm going to bash Joey B's brains in. Yeah. Come on. Tim Cook's been at Apple for 28 years. So a lot has happened. How long is he CEO? He transitioned to executive chairman of the board in 2026. He was the CEO from 2011 to 2026. That's a good run.

2:54:32AQ Shipley:John's been there since 2001.

2:54:35Pat McAfee:And now he just got his opportunity, what, two months ago?

2:54:37AQ Shipley:Yep. What's his name? John Ternus. So 25 years until he got his opportunity? T-E-R-N-U-S. Yeah, I mean, he was a senior vice president of hardware engineering. So he was around.

2:54:47Pat McAfee:He was around for the first iPod. Ladies and gentlemen, joining us now, the man, Adam Schefter. Baby Schefter. Schefter, sorry about the chaos and the confusion in the middle of your day. Thank you for joining us and looking so spectacular. I guess the old Safari doesn't handle the new Gmail. We need to update our Safari so we can get you a Zoom link. And then the video, you need to turn on a camera. I think that's what you need to do. Let's get back to what we're doing. I've been doing that. No, I watched it right here. you did have a camera on. So that's just what I saw. I'll just let you know that's what I saw.

2:55:20Pat McAfee:Bruce certainly not one that doesn't take any blame in this situation, but I watched you. I watched it all just happened right here. It's a tricky new camera. We're getting it. Yeah, you look unbelievable. You are glowing, and we need some information out of you. What the hell is going on with Joey Burrow? Is Joey Burrow okay, and should we be worried about what we are hearing from at Traggs where he's saying no warm-up, no purposeful throws, and he's talking to staff. What do we make from this, and what are you hearing? Well, obviously it's an issue if Joe Burrow is not practicing at the start of the work week on a Wednesday.

2:55:50He is in uniform. He is on the practice field. So that's a good sign. Now, there was a play early in the game where he went down on his elbow and there was some blood and it looked like he jammed his elbow, which could be shoulder. You don't know whether it's the elbow or the shoulder. Here's the deal. When it's the quarterback, all eyes are going to be on him and they're going to have to issue the injury report here post-practice and say whether it's an elbow or a shoulder injury. but I anticipate that it's going to be one of those two because he's not throwing the football at practice today.

2:56:20You got Joe Flacco out there taking the reps with the Bengals. So my guess is that it is connected to what happened to Burrow earlier in the game when he banged that elbow, whether it's the elbow or the shoulder, and he had blood coming out. That's my guess. And the fact that he's out there in uniform, despite the fact that he's not taking throws, That's an encouraging sign. It doesn't mean he's playing Sunday, but the fact that he's out there tells me it's not a significant injury.

2:56:51Pat McAfee:Okay, so this is all happening in real time, and obviously we appreciate Traggs' video. We appreciate you trying to track it down. We appreciate you figuring out your camera coming on here and telling us the latest and greatest. They have to give a report after practice. When will you learn? They have to give a report after practice. When will you actually get more information? Should we expect this to be kind of aloof all week on what's going to happen, or should we know pretty soon? Any moment. Oh. Uh-huh. Well, I think there'll be information that filters in this afternoon what the Bengals are designating the injury.

2:57:22And now that people know that Joe Burrow obviously has something wrong, that there'll be constant updates about his status for the remainder of the week, and that will become one of the central storylines leading into Sunday's game now. I mean, that's – it was – nobody realized that he was hurt there on the elbow. You see him come down on it. But now people know there's an issue because he's not practicing on Wednesday. So it's going to be something that everybody is going to be tracking from this point on.

2:57:49Pat McAfee:You're the best. We can't wait to see what the hell comes of it. This is not good. No. This is not good for the Cincinnati Bengals, who obviously start this season differently than they have in the past. They normally start slow. Joey Burrow, healthy through all of camp. This is a different day, different day. For him to get banged up, don't love that, especially if it's throwing arm. Go ahead, Shefty. No, I was going to say that was such a key thing for them all year for him to be healthy because that's been an issue every year. And he has got to be healthy for this team to have the kind of year that everybody wants them to have.

2:58:23Pat McAfee:And if he's not healthy, then that's going to be a problem for this team. You're the best. We appreciate you. Ladies and gentlemen, that's Adam Schefter. Took longer to shut up than him. Come on a show. I know he's going to hate that. Oh, yeah. Yeah, he's not going to be happy about that. No. I'm trying to get the fucking information right now. You had me come on here and do this whole song and dance. Got to turn on my camera. I can't even hear me. It glitches. And then I could be finding out this information right now. I do think this is quite a developing story here. Oh, yeah. Yeah. There's no question about it.

2:58:48Whenever you look at all the quarterbacks I played with, 80 % of them took Wednesdays off, whether it was week one or whether it was week 10. And then. Oh, really? Yeah. And then what we would do, like, so Carson Palmer, Tom Brady, right? They were all older guys, played a long time. Then what we would do was we would make Wednesday our spider non-padded day. They wanted to get the reps in with pads, put shoulder pads on them on Thursday so they got the reps with shoulder pads, and then go back to spiders or no pads on Friday.

2:59:18Pat McAfee:Okay, so this might not be anything. Might not be anything. Okay, maybe it's just a new— It looked really awkward, though. No, I haven't said that. Even when he came down, it looked weird. And also, like, what the fuck are you doing? I don't know if it was third down, so maybe he was going for a first down, but what the fuck are we doing? How long do we spend talking about Jackson Dartening to get down? He's kind of in the same category at this point. He's a football player. Anzalone's a bat out of hell coming for his head. It was third and six, so he got the first down for his team. Okay, fair enough.

2:59:45Pat McAfee:He's in front of the jungle, too, so he's definitely going to go for it. Yeah, for sure. But, yes, we all think the same thing about Joe. It's a lot better when you're on the field. I can't wait to hear what the reports are after practice. I can't wait to hear what the injuries are. But if that was it where he jams himself in there on his throwing arm, That's going to be certainly something in an AFC North that has a lot of question marks. AFC North has a lot of question marks. The only truth might be that team in Baltimore. That is. Now, the Pittsburgh Steelers obviously get a huge win. Massive.

3:00:16Pat McAfee:Huge win. And Tone, why don't you come join us out here as an undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers fan. And also, your hair looked great today. Unbelievable. Well done, Tony. Good job. Well done, Tone. Yeah. Yeah. Unbelievable. Tony, duh! Baby. Good to see you. Get out! I like Shine. Schefter's still here, by the way. He's still sitting. If we want to go back to Schefter, Schefter, Schefter, everything good? You find out anything? More news. More news? More news. Okay. Yeah, Sam Darnold ruled out for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. He's out. What's going on with that shot here? should be clear what's what's the deal yeah it's not okay thank you your message was clear that we heard it sam donald ruled out this weekend against cardinals it will be bodyguard drew lock back in there uh that's official news chef he's gonna be oh yeah he's going nuts right now he's the best thank you for staying on top of that chefter uh thank you to all the insiders that don't sleep.

3:01:26Pat McAfee:Wow. Just have multiple phones. Yep. Always in it for us so they can put their shit up first. Excited to hear if it's anything with Joe Burrow. We just took a day off. Tone, before we wrap up, don't you think we should see if AQ can win some people some money? What do you think he should do? You think he should be laughing up? You think he should be shooting basketball or football? What do you think he should be doing here, Tone? Fuck basketball. Okay, football season. Okay. I don't know if you guys saw Tyrese Halliburton all the way back. Did see that. Yeah, he's got highlights It's looking exactly like how Tyrese Halliburton is.

3:01:56I saw him wearing the Reggie Miller jersey backwards. It was sick.

3:02:00Pat McAfee:Yeah, I mean, that's what Tyrese Halliburton does. He's super high fashion. He's obviously a super high quality basketball player. It's going to be great to have him back. He returns from a torn Achilles that happened in Game 7 of the NBA Finals in which he was potentially going to go on and have 50 points. Indiana Pacers being mocked and ridiculed in the Eastern Conference. And his return is on DAZN, right? Yeah, that's right. Against the Pelicans or something. In the middle of the day or something like that. Which Tyrese came out and said, okay, all right. Yeah. Thanks. Noon tip. Yeah, noon tip on DAZN.

3:02:34Pat McAfee:I think you have. Noon tip. Yeah, on a Wednesday. I mean, it could be actually a 10 a.m. tip on DAZN there. Or midnight. So, I mean, just the disrespect is just continuing towards Tyrese Halliburton, who, if we can all recall and take a trip back in time, he was the NBA player. I mean, every moment he was the one creating it. Huge moment. Most buzzer beaters ever in one playoff run. Yeah, and they were all, fuck it. I mean, obviously, buzzer beaters in the playoffs are awesome, but his were just somehow even more dramatic than they're supposed to be, which is his style of play. He is a showman.

3:03:05Pat McAfee:He's an entertainer. He's very good for our city and our team. There's going to be a lot to pull from for Carlisle. Not a lot of respect for the Pacers. So I understand you're saying fuck basketball, but I like to say fuck the way people are talking about the Pacers this year in basketball. I don't like that one bit. Okay, AQ. With the four of the brain ball, which hoop are you throwing towards? This one over here. Did you practice beforehand? I saw that. Zero preparation. You do look good, though. AJ, have you seen him stand up here? It's the first time in a long time we've seen him up on the stage.

3:03:34Pat McAfee:He looks good, doesn't he, AJ? Yeah, he looks great. I know we've gone through a bunch of different transformations over the last few years. I think you look great. New tattoos. Fluctuating. Fluctuating. Yeah, I got a new one. Did you get your forearm done? Yeah. New shoes. That looks really cool. Yeah. That looks sweet. Did you get knocked out for that? No. 17 hours. Damn. Nine the first day, eight the second. For that? And you didn't IV? Charged about an hour? Sat there and look. No. Okay. I want to let everybody know, if I show up, potentially, four Jergens bottles. This guy went through during his tattoo, 17-hour period.

3:04:10Pat McAfee:So you got to do what you got to do. Great thrust. That was on camera. Thank you for showcasing everybody what's possible. I'm going to come back, and I'm going to have a full sleeve. one day just know that i stayed up through that entire thing okay just know that i didn't take the easy way out hey i could though because i already got one right here that's right i already got one right here okay super painful area so i've earned my stripes that's right but i will continue to earn my stripes if i get a full sleeve onto here over the weekend yep you know this is going to be a sleeve when it's all done so it's going to be are you going to get an iv and go under you stay up like me just like you thank you for doing that jergens on the bicep there's gonna be a lot of people well every once in a while you know he gets really aggressive yeah so i think start splashing around you know that's just a permanent one that he can yeah actually you know how people like i got to do this a guy had uh be a friend tell a friend something nice and my change of life tattooed right here at the texas game very cool of him to do that uh yes if i would sign it you know and then he was going to get my signature tattooed he does that with remnants of lotion around.

3:05:16Oh, sure. Like teardrops.

3:05:17Pat McAfee:Little dots of lotion just kind of circled right here just so he can remember the good old days. He actually tagged him and said he uses his milking table so he lays flat there while he's getting a tattoo done. Okay, I like that. That's a good idea. Okay, maybe I'll do that for my sleeve that I get done. Instead of getting the IV done. Alright, AQ, why don't you try to win some people some money right now? All you gotta do is throw it over the elephant. The elephant in the room is that you can remember everything. I tell my daughter that every single morning whenever we drop her off. When I drop her off at, what is that?

3:05:51Pat McAfee:Was that preschool? Yeah. Was that kindergarten? No, preschool. When she's in preschool, okay, right over here, I drop her off. I say, you're allowed to remember everything. Okay, let's go ahead and try to do that. That's what the elephant does. And what this elephant wants to remember on this day, this Watt Wednesday, is that AQ Shipley put that football into that hoop right over there and won 20 people$500. All you got to do, AQ, is put that football into that hoop right over there. If you're able to do that for the people, man, there's going to be 20 people a little bit happier. Oh, yeah. If you miss it, though, those 20 people?

3:06:28I hate my guts.

3:06:31Pat McAfee:Maybe kill you. No. Yeah. We don't want that. Yeah, there's a chance. I mean, that's something to think about as you throw this. We don't know. People are a little bit on tilt a little bit. you know, some people. So there's a chance that they thought they were going to guarantee to win this randomly selected$500, which 20 people will win. All you have to do is repost this video, say something nice to somebody, and put the easiest way to pay you digitally. And you could potentially be one of those 20 winners. But if he doesn't make this, he's spitting in everybody's face. That's what they're saying.

3:07:03Pat McAfee:Isn't that what they're saying? Tone doesn't want to do a giveaway. No. I don't know if the Talks table wants to do a giveaway either, especially after the weekend. Definitely. not. Don't really care. Okay, I like that. Indifferent. D, but how do you feel about the giveaway?

3:07:16AQ Shipley:Yeah.

3:07:17Pat McAfee:Indifferent?

3:07:18AQ Shipley:I want some people to win.

3:07:18Pat McAfee:You want some people to win? Yep. Thank you for doing that. AJ, how do you feel? Would you like AQ to put this in or smack in the mouth a little bit? I'm pretty indifferent as well, actually. I do want to see AQ let it fly, though. Okay. So I would like to see you win. Let's go. I'd like 20 people to win$500. Only one ball, though. Okay. Penn State. He's going to make it. Penn State, Nittany Lion. AQ Shipley wearing Sunday red blue shoes. Unreal t-shirt for the brand football. Baby Duke could potentially become 20 people's hero. Good luck, AQ. Here we go.

3:08:03Pat McAfee:Ooh. That was a good ball. Be a friend. Tell a friend something nice. It might change your life. AQ, great work today, buddy. Good to see you. Great work to you guys. T-Bot, great work this week. You too, brother. Safe travels, brother. We'll be back tomorrow. Tone, good to see you. Be a friend, tell a friend, something nice. It might change your life. We're interested in together. Team on me. Team on three. Thank all of you, baby. One, two, three. Team, goodbye.

3:08:30Pat McAfee:A new podcast series from ABC Audio in 2020 goes inside a case that has captivated the nation. To many people, Luigi Mangione is a modern-day Robin Hood. People were cheering the demise of this person they'd never met, who was a father of two and a husband and had a life and was just doing a job. From the manhunt ending in a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to what authorities are saying about a possible motive. I'm ABC News legal analyst Brian Buckmeyer.
